The article aims to understand the influence of the 1990s State Reform on educational policies and the effects of accountability in the school network of Ceará, through documentary analysis and literature review. The state government adhered to the educational logic of accountability: standardization, accountability, and liability. This article aimed to unveil the dilemmas and setbacks in the lives of families in situations of social vulnerability within today's context of psychiatric deinstitutionalization. The quanti-qualitative research was based on specialized bibliography, documents, semi-structured interviews and floating observation, was carried out at the Public Defender's Office whose subjects are families with psychiatric demands assisted by the institution's Social Service and seek for legal assistance to guarantee mentally impaired people the social rights that had been denied to them at the administrative scope. The study found that the members of these families face dilemmas and setbacks both on the micro-familiar level, through conflicts involving financial, physical and emotional matters marked by the pressure and the overload of the situation as a whole; as well as on the macro-social level, due to the growing process of family centralization before the lack of State protection and the structural illnesses of a policy based on global and economic interests that echoes into the promotion of social protection policies. Therefore, one concludes that such issues need to be widely discussed in order to closely observe these families' demands, since not meeting their needs may incur risks to the advances of psychiatric deinstitutionalization. The success of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) crops in Brazil is due to the development of new cultivars. The aim of the present study was to critically analyze the fifty years of a bean breeding program at the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA) and estimate the genetic progress (GP) achieved for grain yield. The estimated genetic progress for grain yield was 0.35% per year, which is associated with visible improvement in plant architecture, resistance to some pathogens, and better carioca bean grain quality. The program was found to be efficient, generating 119 theses and 43 dissertations during the period under study. In addition, hundreds of articles have been published, especially studies aimed at improving the efficiency of genetic breeding programs. Over the past few years, partnerships with other public institutions in performing Value for Cultivation and Use tests have resulted in 12 recommended cultivars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objectives of this study were to estimate the genetic progress of mass selection for white mold resistance in common bean, evaluated in a greenhouse in cycle XII of recurrent selection (900 S0 plants), and compare it with field selection in previous cycles. In addition, progress was compared with microsatellite marker-assisted selection (MAS) among S0:1 progenies. The 79 most resistant S0:1 were evaluated under field conditions using a 9×9 simple lattice design; the 21 best S0:2 and those selected from cycles IX, X, and XI were evaluated in a 6×6 triple lattice. Genetic progress was 4.25% per cycle, and 12.17% between cycles XI and XII, showing higher selection efficiency in the greenhouse. The phenotypic gain and gain from assisted selection among the S0:1 progenies were 5.08 and 1.57%, respectively, and the low value of MAS was due to only two markers (BM189 and BMD20) explaining the resistance. This study was realized with the objective of verifying the resistance to white mold of common bean progenies derived from recurrent selection for resistance to angular leaf spot. The plant material used was obtained from a program of recurrent selection, which was started by crossing seven lines with carioca grain type with ten sources of resistance to angular leaf spot according to the partial diallel scheme. To evaluate the resistance to white mold, it was verified the reaction of 17 parents plus 35 selected progenies, to oxalic acid. Huge heterogeneity among the parents was observed, showing that some of them have resistance alleles to white mold, and thus, there is a possibility of recombine these alleles through the recurrent selection and obtaining progenies with high levels of resistance. Even in initial cycles, some progenies exhibited resistance to white mold similar to the one of cultivar 'G-122', which presents good level of resistance to this disease. This leads to infer that the original population already had some level of physiological resistance for the reaction to absorption of oxalic acid, and also for resistance to angular leaf spot. Thus, among the selected progenies for resistance to angular leaf spot, grain type and high yield, at least four progenies have resistance to white mold similar to the source of resistance 'G-122'. The common bean cultivar "BRSMG Realce", recommended for the state of Minas Gerais, has high yield potential and resistance to powdery mildew, bacterial wilt and to anthracnose pathotypes 65, 73, 77, 81, 91, 475 and 479. The cultivar BRSMG Madrepérola, recommended for cultivation in Minas Gerais, has the feature of maintaining a light grain color for a longer period than other Carioca grain cultivars. Cervical-uterine cancer is among the most feared chronic degenerative diseases, due its high mortality and morbidity rates. This study describes women's feelings before a preventive examination for cervical-uterine cancer, through a case study based on observations and semi-structured interviews as data collection techniques. A total of 24 women were interviewed, between eighteen and sixty years old, who attended the cancer prevention unit at a basic healthcare clinic in Fortaleza, Ceará State between April and August 2004. This study shows that women generally request these preventive examinations only when symptoms appear. They view this procedure with apprehension and fear, due to the possibility of a positive diagnosis of cervical-uterine cancer; they feel embarrassed at exposing their bodies for examination, particularly by male physicians; and they are poorly informed about their own bodies and even their own sexuality. These findings highlight the need for healthcare practitioners to conduct educational activities for women, in order to enhance professional relationships between healthcare providers and users, helping lower the rate of this type of cancer through more frequent preventive examinations.
