Abstract

Purposes: This study aimed to develop and validate algorithms for automating intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) planning in breast cancer patients, with a focus on patient anatomical characteristics. Material and Methods: We retrospectively selected 400 breast cancer patients without lymph node involvement for automated treatment planning. Automation was achieved using the Eclipse Scripting Application Programming Interface (ESAPI) integrated into the Eclipse Treatment Planning System. We employed three beam insertion geometries and three optimization strategies, resulting in 3600 plans, each delivering a 40.05 Gy dose in 15 fractions. Gantry angles in the tangent fields were selected based on a criterion involving the minimum intersection area between the Planning Target Volume (PTV) and the ipsilateral lung in the Beam's Eye View projection. ESAPI was also used to gather patient anatomical data, serving as input for Random Forest models to select the optimal plan. The Random Forest classification considered both beam insertion geometry and optimization strategy. Dosimetric data were evaluated in accordance with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) 1005 protocol. Results: Overall, all approaches generated high‐quality plans, with approximately 94% meeting the acceptable dose criteria for organs at risk and/or target coverage as defined by RTOG guidelines. Average automated plan generation time ranged from 6 min and 37 s to 9 min and 22 s, with the mean time increasing with additional fields. The Random Forest approach did not successfully enable automatic planning strategy selection. Instead, our automated planning system allows users to choose from the tested geometry and strategy options. Conclusions: Although our attempt to correlate patient anatomical features with planning strategy using machine learning tools was unsuccessful, the resulting dosimetric outcomes proved satisfactory. Abstract

Growth promoting fungi have the potential to be used in seedling production. The objective of this work was to evaluate the vegetative growth of Coffea arabica L. seedlings inoculated with the fungi Trichoderma harzianum and Beauveria bassiana, and to determine the immersion time of the seeds in the conidia suspension. The seeds were immersed in the conidia suspension (1 x 107 conidia.mL-1) for 0h, 6h, 12h, 24h, 48h and 96h, constituting a 3 x 6 factorial arrangement in randomized blocks. The following were evaluated: aerial part height, collar diameter, number of pairs of leaves, leaf area, root length, fresh and dry mass. The fungus B. bassiana promoted greater plant height at times 0h, 6h and 96h and a greater number of pairs of leaves at times 6h and 96h. The fungus T. harzianum promoted shorter root length and the fungus B. bassiana at 6h and 96h. The fungus T. harzianum promoted greater diameter of the seedling neck at 12h, 48h and 96h. The fungus B. bassiana promoted greater fresh mass of aerial parts compared to the fungus T. harzianum. There was no significant difference between the other parameters. The 65h seed immersion time promoted greater leaf area and there is no relationship with growth promoting fungi. Research with the fungi B. bassiana and T. harzianum should be expanded, since there is evidence of gains in certain vegetative growth parameters, such as plant height and stem diameter. The immersion time is not a determining factor in the vegetative growth of Arabica coffee seedlings, in the presence of the fungi B. bassiana and T. harzianum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

39. Application of model-based systems engineering for the integration of electric engines in electrified aircraft

Abstract

The objective of green, carbon-neutral flights is propelling the innovation of newer propulsion systems. With this increased development of an interdisciplinary form of propulsion for aircraft, the integration burdens and efforts intensify. In literature, it is estimated that it takes 10-15 years to design and develop an aircraft. The expected date of entry for any hybrid electric aircraft is 2035-2040. Any innovation and effort to cut this time by any degree should be explored and analysed. One of the techniques that have the potential to help fast-track the research and development of interdisciplinary systems is Model-based System Engineering (MBSE). Various studies have shown the benefit of employing a model-based design strategy. The focus case study relates to the integration of the electric machine and the propeller, along with related sub-systems. For Hybrid Electric Propulsion (HEP), the electric machine and propeller need to be integrated and their interaction to be analysed. MBSE is proposed as a methodology that would help streamline the process of design and integration of the two systems. This study documents the exploration of connecting MBSE with current simulation and modelling of sub-systems in order to ensure the fulfilment of stakeholder needs and full system effectiveness. This paper establishes the research problem, and the approach to be pursued, and gives notice of first developments and expected follow-up work.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the association of number of radical hysterectomies performed per year in each center with disease-free survival and overall survival.METHODS:We conducted an international, multicenter, retrospective study of patients previously included in the Surveillance in Cervical Cancer collaborative studies. Individuals with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) 2009 stage IB1-IIA1 cervical cancer who underwent radical hysterectomy and had negative lymph nodes at final histology were included. Patients were treated at referral centers for gynecologic oncology according to updated national and international guidelines. Optimal cutoffs for surgical volume were identified using an unadjusted Cox proportional hazard model, with disease-free survival as the outcome and defined as the value that minimizes the P-value of the split in groups in terms of disease-free survival. Propensity score matching was used to create statistically similar cohorts at baseline.RESULTS:A total of 2,157 patients were initially included. The two most significant cutoffs for surgical volume were identified at seven and 17 surgical procedures, dividing the entire cohort into low-volume, middle-volume, and high-volume centers. After propensity score matching, 1,238 patients were analyzed-619 (50.0%) in the high-volume group, 523 (42.2%) in the middle-volume group, and 96 (7.8%) in the low-volume group. Patients who underwent surgery in higher-volume institutions had progressively better 5-year disease-free survival than those who underwent surgery in lower-volume centers (92.3% vs 88.9% vs 83.8%, P=.029). No difference was noted in 5-year overall survival (95.9% vs 97.2% vs 95.2%, P=.70).
