Doctoral education has been shaped by a continuous interaction between the research community and representatives of the governmental authorities. In Sweden, doctorates were organised into structured educational programmes in 1969. In this study, the development of doctoral education in Medical Radiation Physics at Lund University, Sweden, was analysed over approximately 50 years, in terms of quantitative parameters related to throughput rate and scientific production making up the doctoral theses. Theses from two time periods (1970 to 1999 versus 2001 to 2023) were compared in terms of the total number of full papers (either accepted or in manuscript form), number of accepted full papers and number of accepted full papers as first author. For all three categories of included papers, median values were not significantly different between the two time periods while the variances were significantly smaller for the period 2001 to 2023 (level of significance 0.05). The time between admission and thesis defence decreased with time, according to linear correlation analysis, while the number of supervisors increased. Doctoral theses showed a significantly more uniform composition after a major political reform in 1998. Hence, doctoral education can be described as becoming more efficient and predictable. It is suggested that the primary causes include the introduction of individual study plans and secured personal financial support. The increased efficiency can also be problematised regarding, for example, insufficient independence and limited freedom of research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aims to analyse the research domains, gender gap, and labour market perspectives of doctoral research in LIS in India. Sodhganga, a digital repository of Indian thesis and dissertations, was used for extracting doctoral thesis information and Jarvelin & Vakkari classification system was used for categorising the doctoral research topics. A total of 808 doctoral dissertations awarded between 2016 and 2020 were analysed using IBM SPSS and Tableau. The study's findings revealed that the growth of doctoral research in LIS is on rising trends with 150 PhD awarded in LIS every year. Information seeking (33.8%), library and information service activities (30.7%), and scientific & professional communication (16.5%) were found to be the preferred research themes among doctoral students during the study period. Furthermore, it is revealed that there is a gender gap in the number of PhDs conferred, with more men than women receiving these degrees. LIS professionals with a doctorate have the highest employment rate, at 96.2%, and most are in government jobs. Besides, only 40 percent of doctoral candidates reported receiving an incentive after the doctoral degree. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study addresses the issue in its title, starting from the definition of the general concepts of ethics and deontology, continuing with some regulations from Romania that concern norms of university ethics and deontology, their violations and procedural aspects in the case of finding the commission of such acts - their analysis being carried out from the perspective of the form of legal liability incurred, then, making an examination of the existing factual situation in this matter in the Republic of Moldova, highlighting the similarities and differences between some of the regulations of the two states mentioned above, and passing, finally, to the presentation of the conclusions drawn from the entire analysis carried out within the study. Particular attention was paid to the issue of the originality of the doctoral thesis and especially to the issue of plagiarism, examined including in correlation with copyright, the problem of the difficulties in detecting signs of plagiarism in some situations and the inequity in its detection, as well as the issue of the legal consequences of the detection of the existence of plagiarism, including in terms of the procedures carried out after the respective finding, from the perspective of the framework law currently in force, the drafting of which also took into account the CCR jurisprudence in relation to the way of resolving a notification regarding the suspicion of plagiarism on a doctoral thesis following the presentation of which the author was awarded the title of doctor. Last but not least, the present study, the elaboration of which involved, among other things, the consultation of relevant materials from the specialised literature, includes, in addition to highlighting the superior quality of some current regulations, several critical observations of the author, in consideration of which he formulated appropriate de lege ferenda proposals.

This study attempts an analysis of the doctoral thesis from the perspective of copyright, specifically examining the prerogatives and limitations of copyright when a doctoral thesis is created. In this regard, the doctoral thesis is defined, and it is specified whether it benefits from moral copyright and what the concept and legal characteristics of moral copyright are. The legal framework is provided, and the most relevant doctrinal opinions are analysed, along with several examples from case law. Emphasis is placed on the content of moral copyright in the case of doctoral theses and their limitations.

The pursuit of a doctoral degree is a challenging process that can have a negative impact on the wellbeing of PhD students. Therefore, the aim here is to offer a systematic review of the current state of the literature on wellbeing among PhD students and the variables it involves in order to build an integrative model that will enrich future research. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) methodology for systematic reviews has been used to lay out the process in a flow diagram. We systematically review studies up to 2021 (N = 38) published on the Web of Science and SCOPUS databases. The results show the current state of the literature on wellbeing in PhD students, the characteristics of the studies (location, study design, and sample), how the literature defines the concept, the variables involved, the study limitations, and future perspectives to improve the quality of life of doctoral students. Finally, a comprehensive approach to the topic is presented in an integrative model that encompasses all variables identified in the literature and offers a guide for future research. The aim of this study is to characterise the scientific production in higher arts education, to identify the universities with the highest production, the most researched topics, the directors of the theses, as well as the gender distribution of authors and directors. The production of doctoral theses in the period 1987-2021 was analysed from the TESEO database, identifying 387 doctoral theses, their distribution by university, number of directors and codirectors, and gender distribution of authors and directors. In addition, the Bradford areas of production by university were identified. The University Complutense of Madrid is the institution with the highest production of theses in higher arts education, being in general larger universities the ones with the highest production. Theses predominantly centered on music and performing arts, with less attention to plastic and visual arts. Women are more present than men as authors and directors. The importance of higher arts education as a field of research in Spain is highlighted and the need to promote thematic diversity and equal gender participation in scientific production is evident. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the publication status of doctoral theses conducted by the anatomy departments of medical faculties in scientific journals. Material and Method: In this descriptive, cross-sectional study, data were obtained retrospectively from the internet database of the National Thesis Center in the High Education Board (YÖK). A total of 148 doctoral dissertations published between 2009-2019 in the anatomy department of medical faculty were included in the study. Results: Of the 148 theses, 82 (55.4%) were published in a journal and 66 (44.6%) were unpublished. Of the published theses, 53 (35.8%) were published in SCI/SCI-E, 3 (2%) in TÜBİTAK/Ulakbim TR index and 26 (17.6%) in other international indexes (p=.0001). Conclusion: It was observed that the publication rate of doctoral dissertations in the anatomy department of medical faculty in Türkiye and the rate of publication as articles in journals in SCI/SCI-E were quite high. The aim of this paper is to show the potential value of using the constructivist grounded theory (CGT) methodology in the Urban and Regional Planning discipline. This is done by reflecting on the application of the CGT fundamentals defined by Kathy Charmaz, applied in a doctoral thesis in Urban and Regional Planning. The substantive area of research in which the thesis took place was the practical training experience of planners in becoming professionally registered. The thesis collected primary data through interviews with 14 planners who have undergone the process of practical training to record, document, and analyse their experiences as a prerequisite and requirement of professional registration. The use of the CGT methodology provides valuable insight into the registration process of planners in South Africa and encourages doctoral candidates to use CGT methodology with the aim of generating new knowledge and theory in the built environment. This paper recommends that CGT methodology should be encouraged, particularly when contributing to fields that are under-researched, limited, or non-existent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This text defines effective citation as a way of assessing the topicality of the thesis on the basis of the references used. Subsequently, a study of the effective citation of scientific articles and the differences with the citation measures used so far in the doctoral theses of Pedagogical Sciences of the University of Matanzas, defended in the period 2017-2019, was carried out. In the study was used the documentary analysis method. The results obtained are organised in the form of tables and graphs that allow to illustrate the difficulties encountered in the theses. The main difficulty is the poor number of citations of scientific articles in the main databases of the world related to the subject of the thesis. Finally, the results obtained are contrasted with other researches and the little use of bibliography obtained from the main databases in the doctoral researches in Pedagogical Sciences of the University of Matanzas is evidenced. The directory of theses that can be consulted on the APPRENDRE website of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie lists theses in French about education, teaching and training in 26 countries in Africa, Indian Ocean plus Lebanon and Haiti. This directory was updated in early 2022. It lists 1816 theses defended from 2000 to 2020. Quantitative analysis highlights centers of doctoral research: in Algeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Morocco and Senegal... The qualitative approach makes it possible to identify the themes favored by researchers about education, teaching and training, or in the management of education systems. In 1690, in Leipzig, Tobias Peucer defended the first doctoral thesis (in the world) devoted to journalism, namely De relationibus novellis ("On news reporting"). In this article, I aim at proving the validity and durable value of Peucer's dissertation, by analysing its content and structure, while also considering the philosophical aspects of this very important text, which establishes the theoretical foundation of journalism itself. In this regard, I will refer to some essential distinctions made by Aristotle, Kant and Coseriu, in order to demonstrate Peucer's solid philosophical background and his right scientific intuitions. In the post Ph.D. thesis period, Simon, the only participant in this study was encouraged to reflect on his learning process by his supervisor through interviews. Simon had already reflected on the practice of colleagues during the thesis process; however, this follow-up study brought out the researcher's own voice. Taking a view of identity that emphasizes the interaction between the personal and the professional, the study reveals that Simon was able to understand how reflection on a wide range of incidents and memories, and the classification and thematising of these, led to insights into his own identity growth. The analysis of his own interview data led to reflection on the connections between different aspects of identity. As the analysis progressed, self-confidence and self-realisation emerged as personal themes, and changed teaching content, and changed relationships with students, as professional themes. The learning in the thesis became subject to greater scrutiny, or meta-reflection, and he was able to compare himself with thesis participants, and insights into his changed identity in relation to them. The links emerging involved his roles as writer, researcher, learner and teacher. Some implications for thesis supervision are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The thesis by publication (TBP) – a collection of standalone articles aimed at publication and accompanied by an explanatory narrative – has grown in popularity over the last two decades. Although research on the TBP is beginning to emerge, it is thus far fragmented. We carried out a scoping review of the literature on the TBP for the years 2000–2020 to assess the current state of knowledge about the TBP and emerging knowledge needs. We identified 65 studies that met our criteria and analyzed what kind of research is emerging (as well as where it is emerging from), what topics are covered, and what recommendations are called for. Our analysis shows that the literature has been dominated by studies focusing on individual TBP experiences and on solving practical challenges surrounding the TBP. We argue that important next steps in research on the TBP will be to move from micro-level analysis of individual experiences to more conceptual studies that seek to analyze the TBP from a meso or macro level – exploring the links between thesis format, doctoral education, and the production of knowledge in a longitudinal perspective. In the global age, where social, economic, scientific and technological developments accelerate, the relationship and constant interaction of different cultures with each other has also increased. As a result of these developments, the importance of respect and tolerance for differences becomes more important. Reflecting the differences in the educational environment and meeting them with respect and tolerance can be achieved through multicultural education. From this perspective, the importance of this subject and the number of studies on this subject are increasing. One of the most important benefits of postgraduate studies to the literature is that it presents solutions to researchers by presenting current developments, practices or deficiencies. In this respect, it is important for the literature to determine the tendencies in the theses on the subject of multicultural education, which is associated with various fields, especially in the field of social studies. In this context, the aim of the research is to analyze the graduate theses on the subject of multicultural education and to determine the general tendencies in theses. This research, in which the qualitative research method is used, is a descriptive content analysis study on the examination of graduate theses on multicultural education. Within the scope of the research, master's and doctoral theses on multicultural education, which are in the Thesis Database of the Council of Higher Education (CoHE), were examined. At this stage of the data collection process, detailed searches were carried out using the keyword "multicultural education" depending on the subject of the research, with the "advanced search" tab on the official website. The research covers the years 2009-2022. As a result of the research, it was seen that the postgraduate theses on the subject of multicultural education mostly consisted of master's theses, and teachers were often preferred as the study group. According to the other results obtained from the research, it has been determined that the theses were prepared using quantitative methods in the field of education programs and teaching, mostly in 2019. This study was carried out to examine the trends in subject of study in anatomy department doctoral theses registered in the Higher Education Council (YOK) National Thesis Centre from 1969 to present. This study was carried out by retrospectively scanning the anatomy department theses registered in the YOK National Thesis Centre. While 384 of the 1094 registered theses of anatomy department were doctoral theses, it was found that 353 of these were on human anatomy. These theses on anatomy were grouped in categories according to their subject of study. The year the doctoral thesis was conducted in, gender of the thesis author and the title of the thesis advisor were recorded. A total of 353 doctoral theses on human anatomy, 180 (51.0%) of which were completed in 2010 and before and 173 (49%) of which were completed after 2010, were found in YOK. 96 (27.2%) of the theses were on radiology studies, 84 (23.8%) were on cadaver studies, 84 (23.8%) were on experimental studies, 42 (11.9%) were on anthropometric studies, 35 (9.9%) were on clinical studies and 12 (3.4%) were on other studies. According to the Chi square analysis conducted, statistically significant difference was found in general thesis categories between 2010 and before and after 2010 (p0.05). The research aims to shed light on the natural geographical intellectual output of graduate students in the departments of geography / University of Baghdad, which can be measured and interpreted through the classification of theses and university theses according to the main fields of physical geography, and the research seeks to analyze and interpret the scientific paths of physical geography and form a clear picture about the output Geographical intellectual in physical geography, which contains major fields, which in turn included more accurate and detailed disciplines, so the research decided to delve into the midst of those delicate disciplines through the research sample, which amounted to (448 master and doctoral thesis) for the period (2021 A.D-1961 A.D). The research relied on the analytical method and used statistical methods, quantitative methods and the GIS program for mapping in order to reveal the size of that product and its qualitative and quantitative change during the period (1961-2021) to know the future scientific trends of the natural geographic branches in those geographical sections. The research reached scientific results, including that the product developed quantitatively and qualitatively during three-time stages gradually, and the climate field had the largest proportion in most of the stages, after which the field of land surface shapes, then the field of water resources, then the field of soil. In this study we propose and evaluate a method to automatically identify the journal publications that are related to a Ph.D. thesis using bibliographical data of both items. We build a manually curated ground truth dataset from German cumulative doctoral theses that explicitly list the included publications, which we match with records in the Scopus database. We then test supervised classification methods on the task of identifying the correct associated publications among high numbers of potential candidates using features of the thesis and publication records. The results indicate that this approach results in good match quality in general and with the best results attained by the "random forest" classification algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article aims to analyze methodological and philosophical aspects of scientific novelty in a doctoral thesis, as a singularity of the semiotic dimension of the researcher's epistemic competence. To this end, the role of the researchers' subjectivity and the active role of the philosophy of science for the understanding of these categories are valued. The methodology was developed from the dialectical paradigm and qualitative approach, with the participation of 40 experts from 10 countries and four doctoral groups; the methods of systematization of experience and grounded theory were combined; the expert interview was used, complemented by a focus group in 4 doctoral groups and the content analysis of 50 doctoral theses. The results of the interview confirm 16 themes and four macro categories that help to understand what scientific novelty is, how it is evidenced in the text, its qualities, how it is constructed and what is the role of the philosophy of science in this process; The focus group evidenced difficulties of the doctoral students in the execution of the phase of epistemic transcendence of the theoretical construction method, for which reason they proceeded to elaborate reflexive, didactic and methodological guidelines based on the content analysis of doctoral theses and the systematization of experiences. and professional training experiences that explain how scientific novelty is specified in a doctoral thesis.
