A novel biocomposite (FPPW-β-CD) was prepared by a simple and sustainable method involving fine potato peel waste, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), and green citric acid through the crosslinking reaction. The polymer was characterized using SEM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, and DSC analyses. The adsorbent performance was evaluated about the glyphosate and diuron adsorption from the aqueous solution. Pesticide removal was investigated regarding the influence of solution pH, temperature, and initial concentration of contaminants. Also, it highlights the main interactions involved in the adsorption phenomenon based on the pH effect and characteristics of adsorbent and adsorbate molecules. The maximum adsorption capacity values according to the Sips model were higher than 2000 µg g−1. The pseudo-second-order and general-order models described the kinetic data well. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that pesticide removal was spontaneous and favorable. The magnitude of enthalpy variation values (27.37 kJ mol−1 and − 100.79 kJ mol−1) revealed that the glyphosate and diuron adsorption occurred through the physisorption and chemisorption, respectively. Introduction: Diuron (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) is a prominent herbicide in Brazilian agriculture, particularly in sugarcane farming. This herbicide persists in the environment and is transformed into potentially toxic metabolites, such as 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA) and 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methylurea (DCPMU), raising concerns that encompass environmental contamination and One Health, which unites environmental and human health. Zebrafish are an appropriate experimental model to evaluate toxicity: they metabolically and genetically resemble humans and can be applied in ecotoxicology. Methods: In this study, we have employed multiparameter evaluation to characterize the toxicity of environmentally relevant concentrations (0.5-100µM) of Diuron, DCA, or DCPMU in Brazil, a developing country. In the early stages of zebrafish development, we performed the fish embryo toxicity test according to the guidelines established in OECD Protocol No. 236, extended to 144 h post fertilization (hpf). We also investigated the oxygen consumption rate in zebrafish embryos at 24 hpf, evaluated the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzymatic activity in zebrafish larvae at 96 hpf, and used the Comet Assay to assess DNA fragmentation in zebrafish larvae at 96 hpf. We subjected adult zebrafish to acute exposure for 96 h in accordance with OECD protocol no. 203 for the Acute Toxicity Test in Fish. Following this exposure, we analyzed mutagenicity by using the micronucleus test, which was complemented by quantification of nuclear anomalies (NA) in erythrocytes and further confirmed by histopathological investigations. Results and discussion: Exposure to any of the tested Diuron concentrations damaged DNA, and NA became significant beyond 10µM Diuron. At 10µM, DCA altered AChE activity, suggesting neuromuscular toxicity. Between 0.5 and 5µM, DCA was potentially genotoxic, and 5-10µM DCA induced nuclear pleomorphism. At all the tested concentrations, DCPMU damaged DNA, and NA emerged between 1 and 10µM DCPMU. Adult zebrafish exposed to any of the tested Diuron, DCA, or DCPMU concentrations for 96 h did not exhibit significant histopathological alterations. Erythrocyte morphology analysis did not reveal mutagenicity. Although we observed non-mutagenic genotoxicity, chromosomal instability is of concern. The findings of this study contribute to our understanding of how Diuron and its metabolites affect zebrafish and highlights the need for multiparametric assessment to elucidate how herbicides and their metabolites impact the environment and human health. Diuron is a broad-spectrum herbicide used to control weeds and algae in the agriculture sector. Diuron as a water pollutant has been detected in various water bodies due to its slow biodegradation. The adsorption methods offer a promising solution because of their low costs and efficiencies. This article discusses the presence, fate, ecotoxicology, and removal of diuron from aqueous media by adsorption. It was observed that the most effective adsorbents are employed at dosages below 1.0 g L−1 in slightly acidic to neutral solutions (pH 6–7). Pseudo-second-order model describes the best fitting of the adsorption kinetics, while Langmuir isotherm is used for the determination of adsorption capacity. Activated carbon derived from argan nutshells exhibited exceptional adsorption capacity up to 780 mg g−1, followed by activated carbon obtained from cassava biomass with 122 mg g−1 adsorption capacity. It is also observed that increased dissolved oxygen in water enhances diuron removal with carbonaceous adsorbents (above 60% removal); even in the presence of other common pesticides. In fixed-bed systems, rice husk ash shows an adsorption capacity of 9.5 mg g−1. Finally, theoretical results suggest that diuron adsorption occurs through various physical interactions (π-π interactions, H-bonding, dipole-dipole, and van der Waals forces), depending on the adsorbent surface. Diuron removal is well established at the laboratory scale, but further research is needed to bridge the gap between successful lab-scale applications and continuous large-scale applications. Abstract\nHIGHLIGHTSDiuron, a herbicide derived from urea, has been shown to induce urinary bladder urothelial tumors in rodents, leading the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to designate it as a ‘known/likely’ human carcinogen. In our laboratory, a series of studies investigating the carcinogenic mode of action (MoA) of Diuron have consistently revealed its cytotoxic effects on the urinary bladder urothelium. Prolonged exposure to relatively high doses of Diuron results in urothelial necrosis, regenerative hyperplasia, and eventually, the development of tumors. The hypothesis posited is that Diuron and its metabolites exert toxicity by causing damage to mitochondria, a phenomenon referred to as mitotoxicity. Our research focuses on evaluating how Diuron and its metabolites affect mitochondria isolated from both the urothelium and the liver, the primary organ for Diuron biotransformation. In this context, we present and discuss data pertaining to mitochondria isolated from the liver of Wistar rats exposed to Diuron or its metabolites 3-(3,4-diclorofenil)-1-metilureia (DCPMU) or 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA) at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 500 µM in vitro. The findings indicate that, at concentrations of 100 and 500 µM, the tested chemicals induce uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation, as evidenced by the dissipation of mitochondrial membrane potential and basal oxygen consumption. Notably, at 500 µM, DCA causes mitochondrial swelling, a morphofunctional indicator of severe organelle damage. Herbicide residues in agricultural products can have adverse effects on the environment and human health, therefore, there is an urgent need to establish a sensitive, rapid, and wide-ranging detection method. In this study, haptens of phenylurea herbicides (PUs) and sulfonylurea herbicides (SUs) were analyzed and designed based on computational simulation techniques, and two high-performance broad-spectrum monoclonal antibodies against PUs and SUs were prepared. On this basis, a multi-colloidal gold immunochromatography assay (multi-CGIA) was developed to simultaneously detect 13 herbicides in wheat. The visual limit of detection (vLOD) for PUs including diuron, chlortoluron, neburon, chlorbromuron, and linuron was 1–2 µg/kg. The vLOD for SUs including metsulfuron methyl, ethametsulfuron-methyl, sulfometuron-methyl, tribenuron methyl, cinosulfuron, triasulfuron, chlorimuron-ethyl, and chlorsulfuron was 2–10 µg/kg. Waterways that drain the Great Barrier Reef catchment area (GBRCA) transport pollutants to marine habitats, provide a critical corridor between freshwater and marine habitats for migratory fish species, and are of high socioecological value. Some of these waterways contain concentrations of pesticide active ingredients (PAIs) that exceed Australian ecotoxicity threshold values (ETVs) for ecosystem protection. In this article, we use a "pathway to harm" model with five key criteria to assess whether the available information supports the hypothesis that PAIs are or could have harmful effects on fish and arthropod populations. Strong evidence of the first three criteria and circumstantial weaker evidence of the fourth and fifth criteria are presented. Specifically, we demonstrate that exceedances of Australian and New Zealand ETVs for ecosystem protection are widespread in the GBRCA, that the PAI contaminated water occurs (spatially and temporally) in important habitats for fisheries, and that there are clear direct and indirect mechanisms by which PAIs could cause harmful effects. The evidence of individuals and populations of fish and arthropods being adversely affected species is more circumstantial but consistent with PAIs causing harmful effects in the freshwater ecosystems of Great Barrier Reef waterways. We advocate strengthening the links between PAI concentrations and fish health because of the cultural values placed on the freshwater ecosystems by relevant stakeholders and Traditional Owners, with the aim that stronger links between elevated PAI concentrations and changes in recreationally and culturally important fish species will inspire improvements in water quality. Phenyl urea herbicides such as diuron and linuron are commonly used in agriculture to eliminate weeds. Their uncontrolled use can cause environmental problems. In this study, the adsorption of these herbicides was evaluated using activated carbon from coffee grounds, activated with zinc chloride (AC-ZnCl2, 100% purity), nitric acid (AC-HNO3, 65% purity), and commercially activated (AC-C) carbon for comparison purposes. The spent coffee grounds were transformed into activated carbon through the calcination process. The highest removal efficiency for diuron 40 mg∙L−1 and linuron 31 mg∙L−1 was obtained using the ZnCl2-activated adsorbent, being 100% and 45%, respectively. The best pH range was between 4 and 6. Adsorption kinetic studies showed that pseudo-first and second-order models fit the experimental data, with the adsorption rate increasing rapidly within 60 min for the concentrations tested. Adsorption isotherms indicated that the Langmuir model provided the best fit for diuron, while the Freundlich model was more appropriate for linuron. The efficiency of the adsorption process using activated carbon (AC) was confirmed by the toxicity analysis of diuron and linuron solutions before and after adsorption with AC. A 2018 report from the Water Quality for Human Consumption Vigilance Information System (SISÁGUA, Brazil) showed the presence of 27 pesticides in Brazilian drinking water, of which 11 have carcinogenic potential. We assessed the data for 27 municipalities in Paraná state southwest, a rural landscape with high cancer rates. We selected data from the carcinogenic potential of 11 pesticides provided by international agencies (alachlor, aldrin-diheldrin, atrazine, chlordane, DDT, diuron, glyphosate, lindane, mancozeb, molinate, and trifluralin) and estimated the number of cancer cases attributable to drinking water contamination by pesticides. Also, we correlated such findings with incidence and mortality cancer rates for ten topographies obtained from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute (INCA) database. A total of 9 cities were selected, corresponding to about 81,000 people. All towns had all pesticides quantified in the drinking water. About ten cancer cases were attributed to drinking water contamination by pesticides in 2014–2017, mainly linked to diuron and mancozeb. Concerning the consolidated incidence of cancer cases reported by the INCA, significant correlations were found regarding aldrin-diheldrin, alachlor, and atrazine for breast cancer, atrazine for prostate cancer, and mancozeb and diuron for colon cancer, among others. Regarding the consolidated mortality rates, some correlations were found between DDT and trifluralin for the breast, DDT and lindane for the prostate, and glyphosate for lung cancer. Moderate correlations were found between the estimated and consolidated cancer cases for several topographies. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified the phenylurea herbicide Diuron (C9H10Cl2N2O) as possibly carcinogenic to humans. This research is focused on the adsorbent performances of a Algerian sodium Montmorillonite (Mont-Na), for the removal of Diuron in aqueous solutions. The material is characterised before and after processing using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), specific surface area (SBET) and thermal analysis (TGA/DTA). The tests were firstly realised at 25°C and pH = 6.3. Until 61 hours of experiment, no removal was obtained in this case. After that, the experiments were carried out on Mont-Na at high temperature and medium pH (T = 45°C, pH = 6.3) and then at ambient temperature and basic pH (T = 25°C, pH = 11). The removal was increased from 74% to 91%, respectively. The equilibrium is reached after 5 hours and the adsorption capacity is between 0.74 mg/g at 45°C and 0.91 mg/g at pH = 11. The kinetic modelling shows that the pseudo-first order describes the experimental data of the Diuron adsorption on Mont-Na and the equilibrium data are modelled perfectly by applying the Elovich model. The thermodynamic quantities indicate that the adsorption process on Mont-Na at pH = 6.3 is spontaneous (ΔG < 0) and endothermic (ΔH = 31.80 kJ.mol−1). In conclusion, under the operating conditions used, local Mont-Na proved to be an excellent material for the adsorption of Diuron in aqueous solutions. The development of industrial process in line with the circular economy and the environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) is the foundation for sustainable economic development. Alternatives that make feasible the transformation of residues in added value products are promising and contribute to the repositioning of the industry towards sustainability, due to financial leverage obtained from lesser operational costs when compared with conventional processes, therefore increasing the company competitivity. In this study, it is presented a promising and innovative technology for the recycling of agro-industrial residues, the sugarcane bagasse and the high-pressure water boiler effluent, in the development of a low-cost adsorbent (HC-T) using the hydrothermal carbonization processes and its application in the adsorption of herbicide Diuron and Methylene Blue dye from synthetic contaminated water. The hydrothermal carbonization was performed in a Teflon contained inside a sealed stainless-steel reactor self-pressurized at 200°C, biomass-to-effluent (m/v) ratio of 1:3 and 24 h. The synthesized material (HC) was activated in an oven at 450°C for 10 min, thus being named adsorbent (HC-T) and characterized by textural, structural and spectroscopic analyses. The low-cost adsorbent HC-T presented an 11-time-fold increase in surface area and ∼40% increase in total pore volume in comparison with the HC material. The kinetic and isotherm adsorption experiment results highlighted that the HC-T was effective as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of herbicide Diuron and Methylene Blue dye from synthetic contaminated waters, with an adsorption capacity of 35.07 (63.25% removal) and 307.09 mg g−1 (36,47% removal), respectively. The overuse of pesticides in agriculture poses significant threats to human health and the environment. This study addresses the issue by proposing a hybrid multi‐criteria decision‐making (MCDM) method, utilizing the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), to select the most suitable pesticide removal method for drinking water treatment. Focusing on the priority and selection of treatment options for specific pesticide groups, such as diuron and cypermethrin, based on toxicity and physicochemical properties, the study concludes that nanofiltration is best option for diuron removal, while granular activated carbon adsorption is effective for cypermethrin. The innovative hybrid MCDM (AHP + TOPSIS and AHP + VIKOR) approach, unprecedented in assessing pesticide removal methods for drinking water treatment, proves promising in ranking treatment processes for pesticides. The study emphasizes the serious consequences of excessive pesticide use, highlights treatment solutions like NF and GAC adsorption, and introduces cutting‐edge hybrid MCDM techniques for selection treatment process that meet technical, economical, and environmental requirements. All of these factors combine to provide a novel approach not only used to select the best option from alternatives, but also to prioritize alternative processes in drinking water treatment at pesticide removal practices. Objective: The objective of this study was to quantify the economic costs and impacts of off‐flavor on U.S. catfish farms. Methods: A survey was conducted to quantify the costs and economic methods using enterprise budget techniques to enumerate the costs of off‐flavor on catfish farms. Result: Diuron was the most popular‐choice algicide for off‐flavor management. Direct annual costs associated with off‐flavor management on catfish farms amounted to US$40 million/year. Total industry economic losses due to off‐flavor was estimated at $73.9 million in 2022. Conclusion: The study confirms the continued significance of off‐flavor in U.S. catfish farming and quantifies the associated economic effects. Impact statementEvaluating the economic cost associated with off‐flavor management practices provides insights into the economic significance of this persistent problem on U.S. catfish farms. This study found that the annual cost of off‐flavor amounts to $2325/ha and $0.272/kg, accounting for 10% of the total cost of production. Biodegradation was considered a promising and environmentally friendly method for treating environmental pollution caused by diuron. However, the mechanisms of biodegradation of diuron required further research. In this study, the degradation process of diuron by Achromobacter xylosoxidans SL-6 was systematically investigated. The results suggested that the antioxidant system of strain SL-6 was activated by adding diuron, thereby alleviating their oxidative stress response. In addition, degradation product analysis showed that diuron in strain SL-6 was mainly degraded by urea bridge cleavage, dehalogenation, deamination, and ring opening, and finally cis, cis-muconic acid was generated. The combined analysis of metabolomics and transcriptomics revealed the biodegradation and adaptation mechanism of strain SL-6 to diuron. Metabolomics analysis showed that after the strain SL-6 was exposed to diuron, metabolic pathways such as tricarboxylic acid cycle (cis, cis-muconic acid), glutathione metabolism (oxidized glutathione), and urea cycle (arginine) were reprogrammed in the cells. Furthermore, diuron could induce the production of membrane transport proteins in strain SL-6 cells and overexpress antioxidant enzyme genes, finally ultimately promoting the up-regulation of genes encoding amide hydrolases and dioxygenases, which was revealed by transcriptomics studies. The extensive use of the herbicide diuron is leading to serious water pollution problems. As biomass-derived carbon is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective adsorption material, it presents a feasible option for removing diuron. In this paper, we investigated the adsorption capabilities of palm kernel shell-derived biochar combined with melamine (PKS-BM) as an affordable adsorbent for diuron removal from polluted water. Various techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer Emmett and Teller (BET) surface area analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), were used for the assessment of the properties of biochar synthesised after infusion with melamine. The results showed that the altered ionizable functional groups biochar achieved a removal rate of 82.5% under different adsorption conditions. Findings revealed that maximum removal of diuron from water was achieved with 30 mg of adsorbent at an initial diuron concentration of 100 mg/L, pH 6.7, and an adsorption time of 180 min at 40◦C. Maximum diuron adsorption was 675 mg/g under the given conditions. Kinetic data was effectively captured by both pseudo-second-order and Elovich kinetic models. Additionally, the Langmuir isotherm model exhibited a significant correlation with equilibrium data and reflected diuron adsorption onto PKS-BM, attributed to monolayer formation. Thermodynamic observations showed that the adsorption process of diuron on PKS-BM occurred spontaneously and exhibited an endothermic nature. A method was developed and validated for the simultaneous quantification of pesticides carbendazim (CBZ), diuron (DI) and carbofuran (CF) in surface water using a sustainable, handmade, and low-cost composite electrode (CE) based on graphite and polycaprolactone (PCL). The cyclic voltammetric (CV) results showed a quasi-reversible oxidation peak for CBZ around +0.76 V, and an irreversible oxidation peak for DI and CF at +0.88 and +1.32 V, respectively. Under optimized conditions, the anodic peak currents were proportional over ranges of 5.0-1059.0 µg L−1 for the binary analysis of CBZ and DI, with detection limits of 4.0 and 18.0 µg L−1, and limits of quantitation of 13.0 and 55.0 µg L−1, respectively. The proposed electrochemical method also exhibited good repeatability (n = 10) and intermediate precision (n = 3), with a relative standard deviation of 5%. In addition, the method successfully determined CBZ and DI in surface water samples without any sample pretreatment. Comparison with the reference chromatographic method ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) showed no significant differences at a 95% confidence level, demonstrating the applicability of the method. Additionally, the composite electrode offers advantages such as low cost, easy manufacturing, and simple operation.

The present study evaluated the performance of the fungus Trichoderma reesei to tolerate and biodegrade the herbicide diuron in its agrochemical presentation in agar plates, liquid culture, and solid-state fermentation. The tolerance of T. reesei to diuron was characterized through a non-competitive inhibition model of the fungal radial growth on the PDA agar plate and growth in liquid culture with glucose and ammonium nitrate, showing a higher tolerance to diuron on the PDA agar plate (inhibition constant 98.63 mg L−1) than in liquid culture (inhibition constant 39.4 mg L−1). Diuron biodegradation by T. reesei was characterized through model inhibition by the substrate on agar plate and liquid culture. In liquid culture, the fungus biotransformed diuron into 3,4-dichloroaniline using the amide group from the diuron structure as a carbon and nitrogen source, yielding 0.154 mg of biomass per mg of diuron. A mixture of barley straw and agrolite was used as the support and substrate for solid-state fermentation. The diuron removal percentage in solid-state fermentation was fitted by non-multiple linear regression to a parabolic surface response model and reached the higher removal (97.26%) with a specific aeration rate of 1.0 vkgm and inoculum of 2.6 × 108 spores g−1. The diuron removal in solid-state fermentation by sorption on barley straw and agrolite was discarded compared to the removal magnitude of the biosorption and biodegradation mechanisms of Trichoderma reesei. The findings in this work about the tolerance and capability of Trichoderma reesei to remove diuron in liquid and solid culture media demonstrate the potential of the fungus to be implemented in bioremediation technologies of herbicide-polluted sites. A novel photocatalytic nanomaterial, Ho2YSbO7, was successfully synthesized for the first time using the solvothermal synthesis technique. In addition, a Ho2YSbO7/Bi2MoO6 heterojunction photocatalyst (HBHP) was prepared via the hydrothermal fabrication technique. Extensive characterizations of the synthesized samples were conducted using various instruments, such as an X-ray diffractometer, a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, a Raman spectrometer, a UV-visible spectrophotometer, an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, and a transmission electron microscope, as well as X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, a photocurrent test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance. The photocatalytic activity of the HBHP was evaluated for the degradation of diuron (DRN) and the mineralization of total organic carbon (TOC) under visible light exposure for 152 min. Remarkable removal efficiencies were achieved, with 99.78% for DRN and 97.19% for TOC. Comparative analysis demonstrated that the HBHP exhibited markedly higher removal efficiencies for DRN compared to Ho2YSbO7, Bi2MoO6, or N-doped TiO2 photocatalyst, with removal efficiencies 1.13 times, 1.21 times, or 2.95 times higher, respectively. Similarly, the HBHP demonstrated significantly higher removal efficiencies for TOC compared to Ho2YSbO7, Bi2MoO6, or N-doped TiO2 photocatalyst, with removal efficiencies 1.17 times, 1.25 times, or 3.39 times higher, respectively. Furthermore, the HBHP demonstrated excellent stability and reusability. The mechanisms which could enhance the photocatalytic activity remarkably and the involvement of the major active species were comprehensively discussed, with superoxide radicals identified as the primary active species, followed by hydroxyl radicals and holes. The results of this study contribute to the advancement of efficient heterostructural materials and offer valuable insights into the development of sustainable remediation strategies for addressing DRN contamination. It has been difficult to control Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn and Spermacocea latifolia Aubl. in cotton and soybean crops due to their herbicide resistance or tolerance to glyphosate. Thus, this study's objective was to evaluate the herbicide efficacy applied in pre-emergence, associated with desiccant herbicide in sequential application, in these species. The experiments for S. latifolia and E. indica were conducted separately in a greenhouse. The experimental design was completely randomized, with 4 replications, in a 6 x 3 factorial. The first factor consisted of pre-emerging herbicides applied two days after the sowing of each species, diclosulam (35 g a.i./ha), s-metolachlor (600 g a.i./ha), pyroxasulfone (200 g a.i./ha) + flumioxazin (200 g a.i./ha), diuron (2000 g a.i./ha), trifluralin (600 g a.i./ha), and the treatment without herbicide. The second factor consisted of the application of diquat (200 g a.i./ha), ammonium glufosinate (400 g a.i./ha), or the absence of sequential application. The results revealed that only for the diclosulam herbicide a sequential application with desiccants was necessary for an effective control of E. indica. The other herbicide applied in pre-emergence showed high efficacy (> 90%) in E. indica control when applied individually. Regarding S. latifolia chemical control, the herbicides s-metolachlor (80.04%), pyroxasulfone + flumioxazin (100%), diclosulam (82.08%) and diuron (89.58%), applied in pre-emergence, presented a satisfactory control at 42 days after emergence. The sequential applications promoted better control of S. latifolia to trifluralin and diuron. In conclusion, there are pre-emergence options for the effective control of E. indica and S. latifolia. The leaching of herbicides into the soil is essential to control germinating seeds and parts of vegetative weeds. However, herbicide transportation to deeper soil layers can result in groundwater contamination and, consequently, environmental issues. In this research, our objective was to investigate differences in herbicide leaching between commercial formulations and analytical standards using three different soils. Leaching experiments were carried out for diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl herbicides isolated and in binary and ternary mixtures. The herbicide residue quantification was performed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS). Diuron had less mobility in soils and was retained in the most superficial layers. Hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl were more mobile and leached into deeper layers. The leaching process was more intense for hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl. The additives present in the commercial formulation favored the leaching in soils of diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl herbicides isolated and mixture compared to the analytical standard. This fact highlights the importance of considering these effects for the positioning of herbicides in the field to increase the efficiency of weed control and minimize the potential for environmental contamination. Limited preemergence herbicides are registered for new blackberry (Rubus subgenus Rubus) plantings. This greenhouse experiment was designed to investigate the effects of a broad selection of preemergence herbicides at multiple rates on blackberry transplants. Screening was initiated Aug 2021 and repeated Mar 2022 in Fayetteville, AR, USA, in a greenhouse at the Milo J. Shult Agricultural Research and Extension Center. ‘Ouachita’ blackberry plugs were transplanted into utility pots that contained field soil and growth media treated with preemergence herbicides. After transplanting, plant height was measured from the substrate to the highest apical meristem of 25 representative plants. Initial blackberry plant heights were 13.5 and 9.2 cm in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Twenty-five treatments were evaluated, consisting of 12 preemergence herbicides at 1× and 2× field rates, and one untreated control. Herbicide treatments included diuron, flumioxazin, halosulfuron, indaziflam, mesotrione, napropamide, oryzalin, pendimethalin, rimsulfuron, S-metolachlor, simazine, and sulfentrazone applied to substrate in containers at their respective 1× or 2× field rates. Data were collected on plant height, blackberry injury ratings, internode length, leaf chlorophyll content, and destructive harvest, including leaf count, leaf dry biomass, and aboveground dry biomass. Specific leaf areas and leaf area-to-dry matter ratios were calculated. When observed, plant injury tended to increase from 7 days after treatment (DAT) until 42 DAT. Greater injury levels were observed in response to treatment with mesotrione at the 1× (78%) and 2× rates (90%), halosulfuron at the 1× rate (58%), halosulfuron at the 2× rate (68%), and diuron at the 2× rate (73%). Injury from diuron was rate dependent, with the 1× rate causing relatively low injury (19%). At both the 1× and 2× rates, flumioxazin, indaziflam, napropamide, S-metolachlor, and pendimethalin treatments exhibited similar responses to the untreated control.

The layered cobalt-iron layered bimetallic hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) was prepared by hydrothermal method with cobalt and iron as the active sites. The optimized powder catalyst is obtained with the element ratio n (Co)∶n (Fe)=3∶1 at 120 ℃ 18 h, and the hydrothermal time significantly affects the catalytic performance. Insufficient hydrothermal time, temperature or urea dosage is unconducive to crystal growth. However, excessive increase of reaction conditions will change the crystal shape and make the lamella thicker. Furthermore, the optimized CoFe-LDH is loaded on the copper foam (CuF) surface, obtaining the recyclable terpolymer CoFe-LDH/CuF (CFHC) sheet catalyst. Due to reduced Cu elements' participation, the molar percentage of oxygen vacancy on the catalyst surface is increased by 45.90%. The catalysis performance of CFHC is evaluated by characterizing the diuron (DUR) elimination efficiency, a harmful phenyl urea group herbicide, in the DBDP system, and the DUR degradation rate in the DBDP/CFHC system is 3.18 times as high as that in the DBDP system. The structure and composition of CFHC are characterized systematically, and the intrinsic relationship between the microstructure, elemental composition, and catalytic performance is studied. The introduction of CuF increases the conductivity of the catalyst and the reducible copper increases the oxygen vacancy molar percentage content. Thus, the fundamental reason for the high catalytic activity is the electron transfer in cobalt, iron, copper, and oxygen vacancy in the degradation process. CFHC re-adjusts the dominant active species in the DBDP system. O-2and ¹O2 replaced ·OH as the main active substances for the degradation of DUR. Diuron and Irgarol are common antifouling biocides used in paints to prevent the attachment and growth of fouling organisms on ship hulls and other submerged structures. Concerns about their toxicity to non-target aquatic organisms have led to various restrictions on their use in antifouling paints worldwide. Previous studies have shown the widespread presence of these substances in port areas along the Brazilian coast, with a concentration primarily in the southern part of the country. In this study, we conducted six sampling campaigns over the course of 1 year to assess the presence and associated risks of Diuron and Irgarol in water collected from areas under the influence of the Maranhão Port Complex in the Brazilian Northeast. Our results revealed the absence of Irgarol in the study area, irrespective of the sampling season and site. In contrast, the mean concentrations of Diuron varied between 2.0 ng L−1 and 34.1 ng L−1 and were detected at least once at each sampling site. We conducted a risk assessment of Diuron levels in this area using the risk quotient (RQ) method. Our findings indicated that Diuron levels at all sampling sites during at least one campaign yielded an RQ greater than 1, with a maximum of 22.7, classifying the risk as "high" based on the proposed risk classification. This research aims to study the source, spatial distribution characteristics and ecological risks of diuron in the coastal waters of the Yangtze River Estuary and Shanghai, water samples from 24 stations in the coastal waters of the Yangtze River Estuary, Hengsha Island （inland） waters and the waters near the Yangtze River Estuary Chinese sturgeon reserve were collected from October to November 2021, and the content of diuron in the surface water samples of each station was analyzed by solid phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. According to the test results, the mass concentration of diuron was detected in the water samples of 24 stations in three different regions. Among them, the detection range of diuron mass concentration at 10 stations along the Yangtze River Estuary in Shanghai was 182.43-439.38 ng/L, and the detection rate was 100%. The detection range of diuron mass concentration at 9 stations in Hengsha Island （inland） water area is 83.48-369.25 ng/L, and the detection rate is 100%. The detection range of diuron mass concentration at 5 stations near the Chinese sturgeon reserve is 1.97-2.85 ng/L, and the detection rate is 100%. The spatial distribution of diuron is mainly affected by factors like water transport, ship maintenance, agricultural activities, tides and seawater dynamics. Besides, the ecological risk assessment shows that the coastal waters along the Yangtze River Estuary in Shanghai are potentially at medium risk. Farming areas in Hengsha inland waters are at medium risk, and the nearby waters of the Nature Reserve are at low risk. The results show that the environment in the coastal waters of the Yangtze River Estuary in Shanghai is being threatened by the diuron, especially in the major ports and docks along the Yangtze River Estuary in Shanghai as well as the agricultural areas and river intersections in the Hengsha Island area. In the environment, or during mammalian metabolism, the diuron herbicide (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) is transformed mainly into 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methylurea (DCPMU) and 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA). Previous research suggests that such substances are toxic to the urothelium of Wistar rats where, under specific exposure conditions, they may induce urothelial cell degeneration, necrosis, hyperplasia, and eventually tumors. However, the intimate mechanisms of action associated with such chemical toxicity are not fully understood. In this context, the purpose of the current in vitro study was to analyze the underlying mechanisms involved in the urothelial toxicity of those chemicals, addressing cell death and the possible role of mitochondrial dysfunction. Thus, human 1T1 urothelial cells were exposed to six different concentrations of diuron, DCA, and DCPMU, ranging from 0.5 to 500 µM. The results showed that tested chemicals induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage, cell cycle instability, and cell death, which were more expressive at the higher concentrations of the metabolites. These data corroborate previous studies from this laboratory and, collectively, suggest mitochondrial dysfunction as an initiating event triggering urothelial cell degeneration and death. Pesticides are emerging contaminants that pose various risks to human health and aquatic ecosystems. In this work, diuron was considered as a contaminant model to investigate the influence of the back-side illumination mode (BSI) on the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 coatings grown on Pyrex plates by metal–organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD). A photoreactor working in recirculation mode was irradiated at 365 nm with ultraviolet A (UVA) light-emitting diodes in BSI. The degradation of diuron and its transformation products was analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography, ion chromatography, and total organic carbon analysis. The coatings were characterised by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Five coatings containing 3, 7, 10, 12 and 27 mg of TiO2 exhibited different morphology, crystallinity, thickness and photocatalytic activities. The morphology and crystallinity of the coatings had no significant influence on their photocatalytic activity, unlike their mass and thickness. TiO2 contents less than 10 mg limit the photocatalytic activity, whereas those greater than 15 mg are inefficient in the BSI because of their thickness. The maximum efficiency was achieved for coatings of thickness 1.8 and 2 µm with TiO2 contents of 10 and 12 mg, revealing that the photocatalyst thickness controls the photocatalytic efficiency in the BSI. The influence of riverine physicochemical factors on the overall physiological status and growth of river biofilms was established in a field-data-based model. Two sampling stations were located in the intermediate and downstream watershed areas of the river Morcille (France). Water temperature, suspended matter (SM), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nutrients (NH4, NO2, NO3, PO4, Si) and toxicant (herbicide diuron) concentrations in the river were used as independent variables for modeling their effect on biofilm photosynthetic (PS) yield and dry weight (dependent variables). Basis function of fifth-degree polynomial to accommodate the non-linear associations between the dependent variables and each of the independent variables followed by multiple linear regression was applied to determine the two endpoints. Data from September 2008 to December 2011 were utilized for model development, and 2011 data were used for model validation. Nutrients and DOC, rather than diuron, had a significant influence (p < 0.05) on PS yield and dry weight. Compacted soils may be negatively affecting the selectivity of herbicides applied in preemergence in the soybean crop. Therefore, the present work aimed to investigate possible negative effects on the morphophysiological characters of soybean plants, as well as on the agronomic and yield performances of this crop. For this purpose, two trials were carried out, one in a greenhouse and the other under field conditions. In a greenhouse, the study was carried out in a completely randomized design in a 2 × 8 factorial, with five replications, while in the field, the design used was randomized blocks, with the treatments arranged in split-plot (2 × 8), with six repetitions. The first factor/plot corresponded to the physical condition of the soil: compacted or not compacted, while the second factor/subplot was constituted by the application of preemergence herbicides: clomazone, diclosulam, flumioxazin, S-metolachlor, [imazethapyr + flumioxazin], [pyroxasulfone + flumioxazin], and [sulfentrazone + diuron], plus a control without herbicide. In the greenhouse study, there was a significant interaction between soil compaction and herbicides applied in preemergence for the relative index of chlorophyll b and root dry mass. Furthermore, the isolated herbicide factor did not promote significant changes in any of the morphophysiological variables evaluated. Compaction alone had a negative impact on the variables relative index of chlorophyll a and carbon assimilation rate, with reductions in the values of these variables when the soybean was submitted to growth in compacted soil. For the field experiment, there were no significant interactions between the factors for any of the analyzed variables, nor the effect of herbicides alone. The isolated soil compaction factor negatively impacted the plant stand and the thousand-grain mass of soybean, showing reductions in the values of this parameter when the soybean was grown in compacted soil. Accidental herbicide drift onto neighboring crops, such as soybeans, can seriously harm non-target plants, affecting their growth and productivity. This study examined the impact of simulated drift from ten different herbicides (2,4-D, dicamba, glyphosate, saflufenacil, oxyfluorfen, hexazinone, diuron, diquat, nicosulfuron, and isoxaflutole) on young soybean plants. These herbicides were applied at three simulated drift levels (1/4, 1/16, and 1/32) equivalent to recommended commercial doses, and the resulting symptoms were carefully evaluated. Simulated drift caused distinctive symptoms, including chlorosis, twisting, necrosis, and growth abnormalities, varying depending on each herbicide's mode of action. Dicamba proved more toxic than 2,4-D, and symptom severity increased with drift proportion, with all herbicides causing over 30% injury at the 1/16 proportion. Notably, 2,4-D, dicamba, glyphosate, hexazinone, and diquat exceeded the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value, significantly reducing total biomass. Dicamba consistently caused 50% injury at all proportions, while hexazinone, at the highest dose proportion, led to plant mortality. Dicamba also had biomass accumulation beyond the growth reduction (GR50), whereas hexazinone exhibited less than 10% accumulation due to its capacity to induce plant mortality. The prevalence of Huanglongbing (HLB) disease, also known as citrus greening, has compelled the citrus industry to change management practices to increase production. However, these changes, such as enhanced nutrition and irrigation programs, have caused weed proliferation, subsequently leading to increased use of herbicides. Thus, our study evaluated a popular preemergence herbicide active ingredient, diuron, for nontarget impacts on young Hamlin and Valencia sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbek) trees in two commercial orchards in southwest Florida. The treatments included the preemergence application of diuron at three rates (1.8, 3.6, and 7.3 kg a.i./ha), a weed-checked control (using postemergence herbicides: glufosinate ammonium + saflufenacil), and a nontreated control. The treatments were applied twice (in Fall 2021 and Spring 2022) in a randomized complete block with four replicates. Results indicate that over a 5-month period, the application of diuron generally had no significant impact on citrus root growth. Further, over a 2-month observation period for Hamlin and a 4-month observation period for Valencia, it was found that diuron application had no notable effect on fruit detachment force. Valencia trees treated with diuron high showed higher HLB disease severity at location 1. In addition, Hamlin trees treated with diuron low and medium showed higher fruit drop (~19% more) than the untreated control at location 1. However, this trend was inconsistent across the locations and cultivars. This result suggests that increased disease severity and fruit drop were not associated with diuron treatment. Thus, our study finds diuron as a tree-safe option for preemergence weed suppression in citrus production, as long as it is used in accordance with the recommended dosage and restrictions stated on the herbicide label. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of rock powder in the phytoremediation of Inceptisol (sandy loam) and Oxisol (clay) contaminated with diuron. Canavalia ensiformis plants were grown in pots containing 7.5 kg of both soils, with doses of 0, 4, and 8 t ha−1 of rock powder. Diuron was applied in doses ranging from 875 to 3500 g of a.i. ha−1. The injury level was assessed at 42 days after emergence (DAE), and the morphological characteristics were assessed at 120 DAE. After phytoremediation, the soil was analyzed using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and by bioassay with cucumber (Cucumis sativus) to detect diuron. In Oxisol, no injury was observed, and the rock powder (4 t ha−1) benefited the growth of C. ensiformis regardless of the dose of diuron. In Inceptisol, the greatest reduction in growth occurred with 3500 g a.i. ha−1 of diuron and 8 t ha−1 of rock powder. Diuron was detected after 120 days in Inceptisol with 2625 g a.i. ha−1 without rock powder and 3500 g a.i. ha−1 with and without rock powder. The cucumber bioindicator in Inceptisol showed an increase in the level of injury as the dose of diuron increased. The rock powder favored the growth of C. ensiformis and was able to phytoremediate high concentrations of diuron, which supports the safe use of this herbicide for weed control, minimizing environmental impacts. [Objetivo] El objetivo fue determinar cuál de las dos especies de hidras (Hydra attenuata o Hydra viridis) resultaba más sensible a dos plaguicidas, para luego usarla como parte de la batería de organismos de prueba del Laboratorio de Estudios Ecotoxicológicos (ECOTOX). [Metodología] Para esto se utilizaron diluciones de dos de los plaguicidas más comúnmente usados en el cultivo de piña en Costa Rica y detectados en muestras de agua: el herbicida diuron y el insecticida etoprofos. Se realizaron bioensayos de toxicidad con cada una de estas sustancias y con una mezcla de estas. Se registró el estado morfológico de las hidras. Además, se evaluaron la concentración de efecto medio (EC50), la concentración letal media (LC50), y las interacciones de toxicidad según tres posibilidades: antagónica, aditiva o sinérgica. [Resultados] La H. attenuata fue la especie más sensible a ambos plaguicidas, con LC50s de 16,84 mg/L y 103,01 mg/L; y EC50s de 4,24 mg/L y 23,74 mg/L para diuron y etoprofos, respectivamente. Mientras tanto la H. viridis tuvo LC50s de 36,94 mg/L y 103,01 mg/L, con EC50s de 13,64 mg/L y 53,12 mg/L, también para diuron y etoprofos, respectivamente. La exposición a la mezcla de plaguicidas solo causó mortalidad a la H. viridis y tuvo efecto sinérgico en ambas especies. [Conclusiones] Estos resultados sugieren que la H. attenuata es la especie más apropiada para la evaluación de efectos de plaguicidas, pero se deben realizar más estudios sobre las interacciones de los contaminantes en mezclas, porque estas pueden modificar su toxicidad para diferentes especies.

Runoff from intensive agriculture, which contains many sources of pollutants, including herbicides, for instance, Diuron, has threatened the environment and human health. The intrusion of these toxins into water sources poses a serious challenge to human society, and the rising release of these toxins has always been of concern to water researchers. The consequences of the release of these toxins into water sources are destructive and debilitating to human life. Today, the contamination of surface water and wastewater by pesticide residues, especially from agricultural activities and pesticide factories, has grown significantly. One of the pesticides commonly applied around the world is Diuron. There are various techniques for removing Diuron, the most important of which are adsorption and advanced oxidation. This review presents the characteristics, mechanisms, and emerging methods of removing Diuron. The use of absorbents, such as sludge-derived modified biochar (SDMBC600) and bottom ash waste (BAW-200), is discussed in detail. Additionally, the main features, benefits, and limitations of new technologies like hydrodynamic cavitation are enumerated. The effectiveness of novel adsorbents in Diuron removal is also discussed.

A monitoring survey of antifouling biocides was conducted in the Harima Nada Sea and Osaka Bay of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan to assess contamination by organotin (OT) compounds and alternative biocides. The concentrations of tributyltin (TBT) compounds in surface water ranged from 1.0 to 2.8 ng/L, and the detected TBT concentrations in the bottom water layer were higher than those in the surface water. The concentrations of TBT compounds in sediment samples ranged from 2.0 to 28 ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively. The concentrations of alternative biocides in the water and sediment were lower than those before the banning of TBT by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Although triphenyltin (TPT) compounds were not detected in water samples, TPT compounds were detected in the range of < 0.1–2700 ng/g dw in sediment samples. Their concentrations in the water samples were as follows: diuron, < 1–53 ng/L; Sea-Nine 211, < 1–1.8 ng/L; Irgarol 1051, < 1–4.0 ng/L; dichlofluanid, < 1–343 ng/L; and chlorothalonil, < 1–1 ng/L, and the ranges of these alternative compounds in sediment samples were diuron, 32–488 ng/g dw; Sea-Nine 211, 47–591 ng/g dw; Irgarol, 33–128 ng/g dw; dichlofluanid, 67–8038 ng/g dw; and chlorothalonil, 31–2975 ng/g dw. In this study, a natural smectite extracted from El Hicha deposit in the Gabes region located in southeast of Tunisia was firstly purified and then modified by ion exchange with didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDDMA) under microwave irradiation in order to obtain an efficient organoclay for removing from aqueous solution of diuron. The characterization of the purified clay (HP) and the modified one (HMD) were performed by several technics such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. The diuron adsorption tests undertaken in batch mode revealed that the diuron herbicide did not adsorbed by HP. While it was well adsorbed by the HMD thanks to its hydrophobic character and positively charged surface created by the loaded cationic surfactant molecules. In addition, diuron adsorption did not depend on the aqueous solution pH (2.7–11.8) and only slightly on the temperature medium. Nevertheless, it increased with the raising of contact time, the initial diuron concentration, and the dose of organoclay. The results obtained at equilibrium at room temperature were well described by the Langmuir model with a maximum adsorption capacity about of 110 mg/g. Kinetic studies demonstrated that the diuron adsorption was best described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model. An electrochemical sensor based on Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) modified carbon paste electrode was designed for the toxic diuron pesticide detection. The ZnONPs were synthesized through the hydrothermal route and their structural properties were investigated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X‐ray diffraction powder (XRD). The designed ZnONPs‐modified carbon paste electrode (ZnONPs‐CPE) was characterized using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The sensor showed significantly enhanced sensitivity on the diuron oxidation peak current, compared to the bare carbon paste electrode. Qualitative and quantitative analysis were performed using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). Experimental parameters such as pH, amount of ZnONPs and frequency were evaluated and the optimized conditions were obtained with 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution at pH=8, a frequency of 50 Hz and a quantity of 5 mg of ZnONPs. Under these conditions, linear responses ranging from 1.3 to 7.7 μM and 8.6 to 30 μM of diuron were obtained, with correlation coefficients of R2=0.994 and 0.996 respectively. Detection and quantification limits of 0.22 μM and 0.84 μM (S/N=3) were respectively achieved based on the 3σ method. The interference of some ions on the oxidation peak of diuron on ZnONPs‐CPE was also evaluated and no interference was observed, therefore demonstrating the selectivity of the sensor. The proposed sensor, designed with ecofriendly materials, is sensitive, selective and was effectively used for diuron determination in soils and water samples with recoveries ranging from 98 % to 101.5 %. Diuron, an additive biocide in antifouling paints, is widely employed to curtail the attachment of organisms on submerged surfaces in aquatic structures. Despite the detection of diuron in aquatic ecosystems, information regarding its acute and chronic impacts on aquatic invertebrates, particularly planktonic crustaceans, remains limited. In this study, we analyzed the acute (24 h) and chronic (12 days exposure across three generations) effects of different concentrations of diuron (1/10 of the no observed effect concentration (NOEC), the NOEC, and 1/10 of the lethal concentration 50% (LC50), derived from the 24 h acute toxicity value of 1152 μg L−1) on the harpacticoid copepod Tigriopus japonicus. The acute exposure experiment indicated that the 1/10 LC50 value of diuron significantly reduced the copepod's feeding rate and acetylcholinesterase activity. In response to the 1/10 LC50 value, the intracellular reactive oxygen species were elevated alongside increased malondialdehyde levels, while the glutathione content was depleted. The enzymatic activities of glutathione S-transferase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase were significantly enhanced by the 1/10 LC50 value, suggesting a proactive role of the antioxidant defense system against oxidative stress. Conversely, the activities of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase enzymes were increased at the NOEC value, while their values were reduced by the 1/10 LC50 value. Chronic exposure to 1/10 NOEC and NOEC values revealed the adverse multigenerational effects of diuron. The second generation exhibited the most sensitivity to diuron, with the NOEC value notably reducing survival rate, body length, nauplius-to-adult development, neonates per brood count, and extending the reproduction period. Taken together, our findings underscore that even sublethal diuron levels can adversely impact copepod populations across generations through intergenerational toxicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban stormwater contains various micropollutants, such as biocides, which are washed off from facades during wind-driven rain events. Biocides can reach the groundwater via stormwater infiltration systems (SIS), although the soil layer acts as a reactive barrier preventing the leaching of biocides but producing transformation products (TPs). Little is known about the occurrence and concentration of biocides in SIS soils, their distribution and temporal behavior. Here, we present a first systematic screening of three commonly used biocides (diuron, octylisothiazolinone (OIT), terbutryn) and four TPs of terbutryn in 46 French and German SIS. Overall, biocide occurrence in SIS topsoils was ubiquitous but low, while point source inputs to specific SIS were high but rare. Low concentrations (< 2ng g-1) of terbutryn were detected in 78% of the SIS. Maximum concentrations occurred in recently constructed SIS, suggesting that this is due to higher biocide loads entering the SIS. The frequent detection of terbutryn supports the idea that it is a non-point source marker, as it is relatively stable in soil (t1/2 > 90 days) and widely used in renders and paints. In contrast, high concentrations of diuron (168 ng g-1) and OIT (58 ng g-1) were observed in only one sample, suggesting an urban point source contamination, possibly from a freshly repainted facade. The distinction between source types provides a basis for targeted measures to prevent biocide entry to groundwater. Altogether, this study opens the door to a more systematic consideration of micropollutant dissipation and ecotoxicological effects in SIS design and monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many catchments in Nepal are affected by intensive agricultural activities, leading to extensive pesticide usages. This study aimed to assess pesticide abundance in concurrently collected water, sediment and fish samples for the first time in intensively cultivated catchment (Indra Sarowar) located in the mid-hill region of Nepal during the rice and vegetables growing season. A total of 75 pesticides were analysed, of which 4 pesticides (alachlor, diuron, metalaxyl and pyrimethanil) were present in water with detection frequency (DF) > 40%, with alachlor (0.62 – 2.68 µg L−1) being ubiquitous. In the sediment of tributaries, the pesticides p,p′-DDT, β-HCH, alachlor and diuron were detected with DF exceeding 40%, where β-HCH was commonly observed (DF = 92%) with concentration ranging from 6.29 – 99.22 µg kg−1. The ecotoxicological risk indicated that herbicides (alachlor and diuron) posed a high risk to aquatic organisms in both tributaries and reservoir water. Such risk in sediment was even more pronounced, with alachlor and diuron showing up to 2.3 and 53.7 times higher risk respectively compared to water samples. However, none of these herbicides were detected in fish muscles. Among the fish species studied, pyrimethanil was the only quantified pesticide in edible tissue of both cage cultured (0.35 – 1.80 µg g−1 ww) and open stock fishes (0.06 – 1.12 µg g−1 ww). The consumer risk assessment showed very low human health risk associated with fish consumption (HQ < 0.2). Nonetheless, long-term consumption of contaminated fish may pose some risk that cannot be ignored. Overall, this study generated the benchmark data highlighting pervasive presence of banned (DDT, endosulfan, HCH) and unapproved (alachlor, diuron, pyrimethanil) pesticides in the environmental compartments in the mid-hill's streams of Nepal. A novel photocatalytic nanomaterial, Ho2YSbO7, was successfully synthesized for the first time using the solvothermal synthesis technique. In addition, a Ho2YSbO7/Bi2MoO6 heterojunction photocatalyst (HBHP) was prepared via the hydrothermal fabrication technique. Extensive characterizations of the synthesized samples were conducted using various instruments, such as an X-ray diffractometer, a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, a Raman spectrometer, a UV-visible spectrophotometer, an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, and a transmission electron microscope, as well as X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, a photocurrent test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance. The photocatalytic activity of the HBHP was evaluated for the degradation of diuron (DRN) and the mineralization of total organic carbon (TOC) under visible light exposure for 152 min. Remarkable removal efficiencies were achieved, with 99.78% for DRN and 97.19% for TOC. Comparative analysis demonstrated that the HBHP exhibited markedly higher removal efficiencies for DRN compared to Ho2YSbO7, Bi2MoO6, or N-doped TiO2 photocatalyst, with removal efficiencies 1.13 times, 1.21 times, or 2.95 times higher, respectively. Similarly, the HBHP demonstrated significantly higher removal efficiencies for TOC compared to Ho2YSbO7, Bi2MoO6, or N-doped TiO2 photocatalyst, with removal efficiencies 1.17 times, 1.25 times, or 3.39 times higher, respectively. Furthermore, the HBHP demonstrated excellent stability and reusability. The mechanisms which could enhance the photocatalytic activity remarkably and the involvement of the major active species were comprehensively discussed, with superoxide radicals identified as the primary active species, followed by hydroxyl radicals and holes. The results of this study contribute to the advancement of efficient heterostructural materials and offer valuable insights into the development of sustainable remediation strategies for addressing DRN contamination.

In the current study, Copper doped ZnO nanorods (Zn1 − yCuyO) have been synthesized using a one-pot polyolmethod with low Cu molar content (0 < y < 0.373%) and have been evaluated in the photodegradation of Diuron, one of the most highly toxic and persistent herbicides in water ecosystems.The triethylene-glycol (TREG) polyol solvent played an important role as a reducing and stabilizing agent in controlling the morphology, size and photocatalytic activity ofZn1 − yCuyO photocatalysts. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption study, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy measurements were carried out to examine the physical and optical properties of the synthesized samples. Such Zn1 − yCuyO nanorods photocatalysts with optimized y = 0.047% Cu content exhibit 9 times higher photocatalytic activity than undoped ZnO nanorods under solar light illumination, attributed to higher charge separation rates for the photo-generated carriers in the Zn1 − yCuyO nanorods structure. This work presents the electrochemical degradation of the herbicide Diuron by anodic oxidation on a Ti/Ru0.3Ti0.7O2 metal mixed oxide anode using sulfate as the electrolyte. The study includes the influence of Diuron concentration and current density on anodic oxidation. The results evidence a first-order degradation, with the highest capacity achieved at 40 mA cm−2 and at an initial Diuron concentration of 38 mg L−1. Nevertheless, in terms of efficiency and energy demand, the operation at 10 mA cm−2 is favored due to the more efficient and less energy-consuming condition. To discern the optimum design and operation conditions, this work presents the results of a preliminary technical–economic analysis, demonstrating that, to minimize the total costs of the system, it is recommended to seek the most efficient conditions, i.e., the conditions demanding the lowest applied charges with the highest Diuron degradation. Purpose: In this study, the adsorption behavior of diuron in a typical black soil and its bioavailability to crops and earthworms were investigated by adsorption and incubation experiments, combined with biochar amendment and aging time. Methods: In this study, the adsorption of diuron, and its uptake by corn and earthworms were investigated in black soil with 0.1–5% (w/w) bamboo charcoal. Results: Uptake of diuron by corns was reduced by 45% in black soil aged for 0 day in 0.1–5% biochar-amended soil, the concentration of diuron in both roots and stems of corn plants tended to decrease with the increase of aging time, and the enrichment coefficient of diuron in corn also tended to decrease in 0.1–5% biochar-amended soil. When aging time was 0 day and the biochar amendment in black soil was 0.1–5%, the accumulation concentration of diuron in earthworms decreased by 63%; the bioconcentration coefficient of diuron in earthworms in black soil with different levels of biochar decreased continuously with the increase of aging time. Conclusion: Biochar is an efficient adsorbent for diuron and could significantly reduce the uptake of diuron by plants and earthworms from contaminated soil. Significant correlations indicated that regression analyses could be constructed between the bioconcentration factor and sorption coefficients to predict the bioavailability of diuron residues in soil to corns and earthworms. Diuron (DU) abuse in weed removal and shipping pollution prevention always leads to pesticide residues and poses a risk to human health. In the current research, an innovative electrochemical sensor for DU detection was created using a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) that had been modified with chitosan-encapsulated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-CS) combined with nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs). The NGQDs were prepared by high-temperature pyrolysis, and the MWCNTs-CS@NGQDs composite was further prepared by ultrasonic assembly. TEM, UV-Vis, and zeta potential tests were performed to investigate the morphology and properties of MWCNTs-CS@NGQDs. CV and EIS measurements revealed that the assembly of MWCNTs and CS improved the electron transfer ability and effective active area of MWCNTs. Moreover, the introduction of NGQDs further enhanced the detection sensitivity of the designed sensor. The MWCNTs-CS@NGQDs/GCE electrochemical sensor exhibited a wide linear range (0.08~12 μg mL−1), a low limit of detection (0.04 μg mL−1), and high sensitivity (31.62 μA (μg mL−1)−1 cm−2) for DU detection. Furthermore, the sensor demonstrated good anti-interference performance, reproducibility, and stability. This approach has been effectively employed to determine DU in actual samples, with recovery ranges of 99.4~104% in river water and 90.0~94.6% in soil. The developed electrochemical sensor is a useful tool to detect DU, which is expected to provide a convenient and easy analytical technique for the determination of various bioactive species. Goethite was modified by chitosan (CS) or poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) to improve its adsorptive abilities toward components of agrochemicals, i.e., copper ions (Cu), phosphate ions (P), and diuron. The pristine goethite effectively bound Cu (7.68 mg/g, 63.71%) and P (6.31 mg/g, 50.46%) only in their mixed systems. In the one adsorbate solutions, the adsorption levels accounted for 3.82 mg/g (30.57%) for Cu, 3.22 mg/g (25.74%) for P, and 0.15 mg/g (12.15%) for diuron. Goethite modification with CS or PAA did not yield spectacular results in adsorption. The maximum increase in adsorbed amount was noted for Cu ions (8.28%) after PAA modification as well as for P (6.02%) and diuron (24.04%) after CS modification. Both goethite modifications contributed to clear reduction in desorption of pollutants (even by 20.26% for Cu after PAA coating), which was mainly dictated by electrostatic attractive forces and hydrogen bonds formation occurring between macromolecules and impurities. The only exception in this phenomenon was Cu desorption from CS-modified solid—the polymer made it higher (to 95.00%). The Cu adsorption on PAA-modified goethite enhanced solid aggregation and thus facilitated metal cation separation from aqueous media. A sensitive, simple, fast, and inexpensive method for determining diuron in water using square wave voltammetry and a glassy carbon electrode is presented. This method was developed to evaluate diuron contamination in river waters close to sugarcane cultivation, located in the metropolitan region of João Pessoa, in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. An analytical curve with a linear response ranging from 38.5–115.0 nmol L−1 (r2 = 0.993), a LOD equal 0.2 nmol L−1, and recovery rates from 88.0 to 108.0 %.
