Diurnal variation of plasma glucose levels may contribute to diagnostic uncertainty. The permissible time interval, pT(t), was proposed as a time-dependent characteristic to specify the time within which glucose levels from two consecutive samples are not biased by the time of blood collection. A major obstacle is the lack of population-specific data that reflect the diurnal course of a measurand. To overcome this issue, an approach was developed to detect and assess diurnal courses from big data.A quantile regression model, QRM, was developed comprising two-component cosinor analyses and time, age, and sex as predictors. Population-specific canonical diurnal courses were generated employing more than two million plasma glucose values from four different hospital laboratory sites. Permissible measurement uncertainties, pU, were also estimated by a population-specific approach to render Chronomaps that depict pT(t) for any timestamp of interest.The QRM revealed significant diurnal rhythmometrics with good agreement between the four sites. A minimum pT(t) of 3 h exists for median glucose levels that is independent from sampling times. However, amplitudes increase in a concentration-dependent manner and shorten pT(t) down to 72 min. Assessment of pT(t) in 793,048 paired follow-up samples from 99,453 patients revealed a portion of 24.2 % sample pairs that violated the indicated pT(t).QRM is suitable to render Chronomaps from population specific time courses and suggest that more stringent sampling schedules are required, especially in patients with elevated glucose levels. This study examined the effect of time of day on immediate recall of motor skills (i.e., tactical behaviors in basketball) from different external visualizations. First-year students from a public university in sports science (novice practitioners, 18.96 ± 0.57 years) were quasi-randomly assigned to three experimental conditions: video modeling by experts, a sequential-with-tracing presentation of pictures, or a sequential-without-tracing presentation of pictures. Morning and late afternoon sessions were conducted involving study phases and immediate-recall tests (i.e., comprehension and game performance tests). Oral temperature and mood states were also measured at both times of day. The results revealed that participants exhibited better recall performances in the morning, irrespective of the visualization format used. At both time of day, tactical behaviors were better recalled from video modeling rather than the two sequential presentations of pictures. In addition, providing the learner with a permanent visual trace of the previous states improves the immediate recall of tactical skills from a sequential presentation of pictures, at both time of day. Furthermore, morning sessions resulted in lower oral temperature, lower negative mood, and higher positive mood, compared with afternoon sessions. This study examines low-level jets (LLJs) across Northeastern China during both warm (June–September) and cold seasons (December–March) from 1957 to 2021, using fifth generation of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts reanalysis data with 25-km resolution. LLJs manifest in two prominent regions, one along the leeward flank of the Da Hinggan Ling Mountains in the cold season and another at the center of Northeastern China in the warm season. The intricate interplay between ambient circulation and terrain shapes LLJ distribution, altitudes, wind directions, diurnal cycles, and seasonal diversities. During the warm season, prevailing southwesterly LLJs are found at 925 hPa, while the cold season features stronger and more frequent northwesterly LLJs at 875 hPa. Analysis of the diurnal patterns reveals distinctive behaviors of LLJs in the cold and warm seasons. During the warm season, the single peak in LLJ occurrence emerges around midnight; conversely, in the cold season, LLJs are most frequent shortly before midnight, with an additional sub-peak in the morning. A momentum budget analysis establishes mechanisms underlying these two distinct diurnal variations. In both seasons, the diurnal variation of LLJs is predominately driven by an inertial oscillation and mountain-valley circulations. The integrated multi-satellite retrievals for the global precipitation measurement (IMERG) data, which is the latest generation of multi-satellite fusion inversion precipitation product provided by the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, has been widely applied in hydrological research and applications. However, the quality of IMERG data needs to be validated, as this technology is essentially an indirect way to obtain precipitation information. This study evaluated the performance of IMERG final run (version 6.0) products from 2001 to 2020, using three sets of gauge-derived precipitation data obtained from the Integrated Surface Database, China Meteorological Administration, and U.S. Climate Reference Network. The results showed a basic consistency in the spatial pattern of annual precipitation total between IMERG data and gauge observations. The highest and lowest correlations between IMERG data and gauge observations were obtained in North Asia (0.373, p < 0.05) and Europe (0.308, p < 0.05), respectively. IMERG data could capture the bimodal structure of diurnal precipitation in South Asia but overestimates a small variation in North Asia. The disparity was attributed to the frequency overestimation but intensity underestimation in satellite inversion, since small raindrops may evaporate before arriving at the ground but can be identified by remote sensors. IMERG data also showed similar patterns of interannual precipitation variability to gauge observation, while overestimating the proportion of annual precipitation hours by 2.5% in North America, and 2.0% in North Asia. These findings deepen our understanding of the capabilities of the IMERG product to estimate precipitation at the hourly scale, and can be further applied to improve satellite precipitation retrieval. The sea surface skin temperature (SSTskin) is of critical importance with regard to air–sea interactions and marine carbon circulation. At present, no single remote sensor is capable of providing a gap-free SSTskin. The use of data fusion techniques is therefore essential for the purpose of filling these gaps. The extant fusion methodologies frequently fail to account for the influence of depth disparities and the diurnal variability of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) retrieved from multi-sensors. We have developed a novel approach that integrates depth and diurnal corrections and employs advanced data fusion techniques to generate hourly gap-free SST datasets. The General Ocean Turbulence Model (GOTM) is employed to model the diurnal variability of the SST profile, incorporating depth and diurnal corrections. Subsequently, the corrected SSTs at the same observed time and depth are blended using the Markov method and the remaining data gaps are filled with optimal interpolation. The overall precision of the hourly gap-free SSTskin generated demonstrates a mean bias of −0.14 °C and a root mean square error of 0.57 °C, which is comparable to the precision of satellite observations. Background Methods Results Conclusion Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of orexin show a cyclic diurnal variation in healthy subjects, which is diminished in patients with certain diseases. However, possible circadian variations in orexin levels in critically ill patients remain unknown. In this study, we evaluated the orexin concentrations in the CSF and their diurnal variation in patients undergoing thoracic aortic aneurysm repair with lumbar intrathecal catheterization for CSF drainage after non‐neurosurgery.Eligible patients with a lumbar intrathecal catheter placed for CSF drainage following aortic surgery at a single‐center ICU between September 2019 and February 2020 were included. Catheters were placed before anesthesia induction, and CSF was collected at the time of catheter placement, ICU admission, and daily at 6:00, 12:00, 18:00, and 24:00 until the catheter was removed or for up to 5 days after admission to the ICU.Three patients (Patients A, B, and C) who underwent thoracic aortic aneurysm repair were included. Patients B and C received sedatives or hypnotics during the orexin measurement period. The baseline orexin levels for Patients A, B, and C were 219.9, 312.3, and 403.8 pg/mL, while the mean orexin levels were 319.4 ± 82.6, 372.4 ± 56.0, and 306.3 ± 48.3 pg/mL, respectively. For all three patients, orexin levels showed diurnal variations, but no consistent periodic changes.CSF orexin concentrations for patients undergoing thoracic aortic aneurysm repair in the ICU were within the reported range compared to those of previously reported healthy subjects; however, consistent periodic diurnal variations were not observed. Clouds play a pivotal role in determining Earth's climate, impacting several atmospheric processes influencing the weather. The study explores the temporal variations in cloud base height (CBH) over Pune, a tropical station, from 2017 to 2023 using a Laser-Based Ceilometer with a range of 0–7500 m. Our analysis shows seasonal trends in CBH, with the monsoon season exhibiting unique characteristics showing the lowest average CBH and minimal diurnal changes during the study period. Conversely, the pre-monsoon, post-monsoon, and winter season show a gradual rise of CBH in the morning, maintaining higher levels until late afternoon, followed by a decline in the evening. Analysis of the diurnal frequency of cloud occurrence at 500 m intervals reveals the monsoon season's dominance in the 500 m to 1000 m layer. Throughout the year, low cloud bases (CBH <2000 m) are most frequent, outpacing the frequency of mid and high cloud bases. High cloud base (7500 < CBH > 6000 m) is the least common, showing a semi-diurnal pattern in winter with peaks around noon and midnight. These findings not only enhance our understanding of Pune's atmospheric behaviour but also offer valuable information for weather prediction, climate modelling, and environmental monitoring. Biological variation is a relevant component of diagnostic uncertainty. In addition to within-subject and between-subject variation, preanalytical variation also includes components that contribute to biological variability. Among these, daily recurring, i.e., diurnal physiological variation is of particular importance, as it contains both a random and a non-random component if the exact time of blood collection is not known. We introduce four time-dependent characteristics (TDC) of diurnal variations for measurands to assess the relevance and extent of time dependence on the evaluation of laboratory results. TDC address (i) a threshold for considering diurnality, (ii) the expected relative changes per time unit, (iii) the permissible time interval between two blood collections at different daytimes within which the expected time dependence does not exceed a defined analytical uncertainty, and (iv) a rhythm-expanded reference change value. TDC and their importance will be exemplified by the measurands aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase, glucose, thyroid stimulating hormone, and total bilirubin. TDCs are calculated for four time slots that reflect known blood collection schedules, i.e., 07:00–09:00, 08:00–12:00, 06:00–18:00, and 00:00–24:00. The amplitude and the temporal location of the acrophase are major determinates impacting the diagnostic uncertainty and thus the medical interpretation, especially within the typical blood collection time from 07:00 to 09:00. Utilizing hourly observational data from automatic weather stations across Fujian Province from 2008 to 2020, this study defined and classified concepts and thresholds for convective precipitation, short-duration convective precipitation, long-duration convective precipitation, localized heavy precipitation, and widespread heavy precipitation. We explored the fundamental diurnal climatic characteristics of convective precipitation during the flood season in Fujian Provinces complex terrain. The results indicate the following. 1) Convective precipitation during the flood season exhibits distinct diurnal variation, with a significant spatial distribution along mountainous and coastal terrains. 2) The frequency of precipitation during the pre-flood season is higher and its intensity is lower than in the post-flood season. Due to differing primary weather systems influencing each period, resulting in substantial differences in the spatial distribution of precipitation frequency and intensity. 3) Both shortduration and localized precipitation show pronounced afternoon peaks in their diurnal patterns, predominantly occurring on windward slopes, highlighting mechanisms of afternoon moist convection and orographic lifting, whereas long-duration and widespread precipitation lack diurnal variation, reflecting the influence of large-scale circulation. Abstract [Objective] This study aims to explore the flowering characteristics and flower fragrance components and their release patterns of Rhus chinensis, so as to provide a basis for further development and utilization of floral fragrance of R. chinensis. [Methods] Scanning electron microscope was used to observe pollen morphology. Headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques were used to analyze the main floral scent components in different flowering stages and daily change pattern. [Results] A total of 92 floral substances (29 terpenes, 19 aldehydes, 15 esters, 14 alcohols, 5 ketones, 4 olefins, 2 aromatic hydrocarbons, and 1 each of phenols, alkanes, acids, and others) were detected in different flowering periods. Its relative content was increased and then decreased, reaching a maximum (3.60 μg/g) at the full-flowering stage, with significant differences among the flowering stages. A total of 84 floral aroma substances were detected during full flowering stage. The release showed a parabolic daily variation trend, which was higher during the day than at night and reached the maximum at 18:00 (4.80 μg/g), and then continued to decrease and reached the lowest at 6:00, with 2.58 μg/g. Terpenes were the main floral substances of R. chinensis, with a relative content of about 70% of the total floral components. [Conclusion] R. chinensis is rich in floral components, with a clear diurnal rhythm. Terpenes are its main floral substances.

Phytoplankton samples were collected both inside and outside a large scale raft mussel culture area of Gouqi island in September 2023. The diurnal variation characteristics of phytoplankton community inside and outside the culture area were analyzed by using abundance and diversity index and multivariate statistical methods. A total of 7 phyla and 158 species of phytoplankton were collected(103 species inside and 98 species outside the area), including 104 species of diatom(accounting for 65.82%), 30 species of Pyrrophyta(accounting for 18.99%), and 15.19% for the rest species. During the daytime, 94 species were collected in the inner area, while 103 species were collected at night. In the outer area, 93 species were collected during the daytime, and 98 species were collected at night. The dominant species of phytoplankton in the aquaculture area were 9 species, while in the outer area, there were 12 dominant species. Among them, Skeletonema costatum and Noctiluca scintillans were dominant species throughout the day in both areas. The average abundance of phytoplankton in the inner area was (1.77×107±2.5×106) cells/L during the daytime and (1.64×107±2.31×106) cells/L at night, while in the outer area, it was (1.87×107±3.36×106) cells/L during the daytime and (1.75×107±2.72×106) cells/L at night. The abundance variation in the inner area showed a multi-peak pattern, with peak values occurring during the rising and falling tides and the high tide. In contrast, the abundance variation in the outer area showed a single-peak pattern, closely related to tidal changes, with the peak value only occurring during the high tide.Non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) analysis showed that there was no significant difference in phytoplankton community between day and night in the aquaculture area (P>0.05), but there was significant difference in phytoplankton community outside the area (P<0.05), which was significantly correlated with tidal changes (P<0.01). Temperature, dissolved oxygen and salinity were significantly correlated with the number and abundance of phytoplankton (P<0.05), the number of phytoplankton species was significantly negatively correlated with phosphate and nitrate (P<0.05), and the abundance was significantly positively correlated with ammonia nitrogen and silicate (P<0.05). The results showed that the impact of large-scale raft culture on phytoplankton community in local waters could present a more positive result at the stage of red tide organism aggregation. The ability to differentiate species is not adequate for modern forage breeding programs. The measurement of persistence is currently a bottleneck in the breeding system that limits the throughput of cultivars to the marketplace and prevents it from being selected as a trait. The use of hyperspectral data obtained through remote sensing offers the potential to reduce guesswork by identifying the distribution of pasture species, but only if such data alone can distinguish the subtle differences within species, i.e., cultivars. The implementation of this technology faces many challenges due to the spectral and temporal variability of species. To understand the spectral variability between and within species groups, differentiation using hyperspectral data from monoculture plots of turf species was utilized. Spectral data were collected over a year using an ASD FieldSpec® and canopy pasture probe (CAPP). The plots consisted of monocultures of various species, and cultivars (a total of 10 plots). Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was conducted on the full spectrum and reduced band data. This technique successfully differentiated the species with high accuracy (>98%). We demonstrate the potential of hyperspectral data and analysis techniques to accurately separate differences down to cultivar level. The present study aimed to elucidate the effects of real-time versus slow-motion videos, as a function of time of day, on the acquisition of basketball plays. Fifty first-year sports science students (Mage = 18.82 y, SD = 0.49) were quasi-randomly allocated to either into 0.5 or 1.0 times normal video speed, attending morning (08:00–09:00 h) and late-afternoon (16:00–17:00 h) sessions. After measuring oral temperature (OT) and mood states (MS), participants observed a basketball system's evolution twice and completed two recall tests [game comprehension (GC) and game performance (GP) tests]. Afternoon sessions exacerbated higher OT, higher negative MS (e.g. anxiety and fatigue), and lower positive MS (i.e. vigor) compared to mornings (regardless of video speed). GC and GP were higher in the morning than in the afternoon, with real-time (p < 0.001, both) and slow-motion videos (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). GC and GP were higher with slow-motion videos compared to real-time videos in morning and afternoon sessions (p < 0.01, both). The findings highlight the morning's superiority in the acquisition of motor knowledge from videos, due to mood disturbances and lower arousal levels. Patients suffering from hepatic ischemia–reperfusion injury (HIRI) frequently exhibit postoperative cognitive deficits. Our previous observations have emphasized the diurnal variation in hepatic ischemia–reperfusion injury-induced cognitive impairment, in which gut microbiota-associated hippocampal lipid metabolism plays an important role. Herein, we further investigated the molecular mechanisms involved in the process. Hepatic ischemia–reperfusion surgery was performed under morning (ZT0, 08:00) and evening (ZT12, 20:00). Fecal microbiota transplantation was used to associate HIRI model with pseudo-germ-free mice. The novel object recognition test and Y-maze test were used to assess cognitive function. 16S rRNA gene sequencing and analysis were used for microbial analysis. Western blotting was used for hippocampal protein analysis. Compared with the ZT0-HIRI group, ZT12-HIRI mice showed learning and short term memory impairment, accompanied by down-regulated expression of hippocampal CB1R, but not CB2R. Both gut microbiota composition and microbiota metabolites were significantly different in ZT12-HIRI mice compared with ZT0-HIRI. Fecal microbiota transplantation from the ZT12-HIRI was demonstrated to induce cognitive impairment behavior and down-regulated hippocampal CB1R and β-arrestin1. Intraperitoneal administration of CB1R inhibitor AM251 (1 mg/kg) down-regulated hippocampal CB1R and caused cognitive impairment in ZT0-HIRI mice. And intraperitoneal administration of CB1R agonist WIN 55,212-2 (1 mg/kg) up-regulated hippocampal CB1R and improved cognitive impairment in ZT12-HIRI mice. In summary, the results suggest that gut microbiota may regulate the diurnal variation of HIRI-induced cognitive function by interfering with hippocampal CB1R. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aerosol acidity is a critical factor affecting atmospheric chemistry. Here, we present a study on annual, monthly, and daily variations in PM2.5 pH in Shanghai during 2010–2020. With the effective control of SO2 emissions, the NO2/SO2 ratio increased from 1.26 in 2010 to 5.07 in 2020 and the NO3−/SO42− ratio increased from 0.68 to 1.49. Aerosol pH decreased from 3.27 in 2010 to 2.93 in 2020, regardless of great achievement in reducing industrial SO2 and NOx emissions. These findings suggest that aerosol acidity might not be significantly reduced in response to the control of SO2 and NOx emissions. The monthly variation in pH values exhibited a V-shape trend, mainly attributable to aerosol compositions and temperature. Atmospheric NH3 plays the decisive role in buffering particle acidity, whereas Ca2+ and K+ are important acidity buffers, and the distinct pH decline during 2010–2016 was associated with the reduction of Ca2+ and K+ while both temperature and SO42− were important drivers in winter. Sensitivity tests show that pH increases with the increasing relative humidity in summer while it is not sensitive to relative humidity in winter due to proportional increases in H a i r + and aerosol liquid water content (ALWC). Our results suggest that reducing NOx emissions in Shanghai will not significantly affect PM2.5 acidity in winter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

North China experienced devastating rainfall from 29 July to 1 August 2023, which caused substantial flooding and damage. This study analyzed observations from surface rain gauges and S-band dual-polarization radars to reveal the following unique features of the precipitation evolution from the plain to the mountains during this event. (1) The total rainfall was found concentrated along the Taihang Mountains at elevations generally > 200 m, and its spatiotemporal evolution was closely associated with northward-moving low-level jets. (2) Storms propagated northwestward with southeasterly steering winds, producing continuous rainfall along the eastern slopes of the Taihang Mountains owing to mountain blocking, which resulted in the formation of local centers of precipitation maxima. However, most rainfall episodes with an extreme hourly rainfall rate (HRR), corresponding to large horizontal wind shear at low levels, actively occurred in the plain area to the east of the Taihang Mountains. (3) The western portion of the extreme heavy rain belt in the north was mainly caused by long-lasting cumulus–stratus mixed precipitation with HRR < 20 mm h−1; the eastern portion was dominated by short-duration convective precipitation with HRR > 20 mm h−1. The contributions of convective precipitation and cumulus–stratus mixed precipitation to the total rainfall of the southern and middle rain belts were broadly equivalent. (4) The local HRR maxima located at the transition zone from the plain to the mountains were induced by moderate storm-scale convective cells with active warm-rain processes and large number of small-sized rain droplets. (5) During the devastating rainfall event, it was observed that the rainfall peaked at around 1800 local time (LT) every day over the upstream plain area (no diurnal cycle of rainfall was observed in relation to the accumulated rainfall centers over mountain areas). This was attributable to convective activities along the storm propagation path, which was a result of the more unstable stratification with a suitable steering mechanism that was related to afternoon solar heating and enhanced water vapor. The diurnal variation of surface incident solar radiation (Rs) has a significant impact on the Earth's climate. Satellite-retrieved Rs datasets display good spatial and temporal continuity compared with ground-based observations and, more importantly, have higher accuracy than reanalysis datasets. Facilitated by these advantages, many scholars have evaluated satellite-retrieved Rs, especially based on monthly and annual data. However, there is a lack of evaluation on an hourly scale, which has a profound impact on sea–air interactions, climate change, agriculture, and prognostic models. This study evaluates Himawari-8 and Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System Synoptic (CERES)-retrieved hourly Rs data covering 60°S–60°N and 80°E–160°W based on ground-based observations from the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN). Hourly Rs were first standardized to remove the diurnal and seasonal cycles. Furthermore, the sensitivities of satellite-retrieved Rs products to clouds, aerosols, and land cover types were explored. It was found that Himawari-8-retrieved Rs was better than CERES-retrieved Rs at 8:00–16:00 and worse at 7:00 and 17:00. Both satellites performed better at continental sites than at island/coastal sites. The diurnal variations of statistical parameters of Himawari-8 satellite-retrieved Rs were stronger than those of CERES. Relatively larger MABs in the case of stratus and stratocumulus were exhibited for both hourly products. Smaller MAB values were found for CERES covered by deep convection and cumulus clouds and for Himawari-8 covered by deep convection and nimbostratus clouds. Larger MAB values at evergreen broadleaf forest sites and smaller MAB values at open shrubland sites were found for both products. In addition, Rs retrieved by Himawari-8 was more sensitive to AOD at 10:00–16:00, while that retrieved by CERES was more sensitive to COD at 9:00–15:00. The CERES product showed larger sensitivity to COD (at 9:00–15:00) and AOD (at 7:00–10:00) than Himawari-8. This work helps data producers know how to improve their future products and helps data users be aware of the uncertainties that exist in hourly satellite-retrieved Rs data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While previous studies have explored a range of factors governing the optimal use of caffeine (CAF) in athletes, limited research has explored how time of day (TOD) affects the ergogenic effects of various CAF dosages on physical performance. This study aimed to increase knowledge about how different recommended CAF doses (3 mg/kg vs. 6 mg/kg) ingested at different TODs affected maximal high-intensity physical performance and the perception of potential side effects in female athletes. In this double-blind, randomized, and counterbalanced study, 15 low CAF consumer athletes (aged 18.3 ± 0.5 y) underwent six trials, including three testing conditions assessed across two TODs: one in the morning (08:00 a.m.) and one in the evening (06:00 p.m.). During each condition, the participants ingested either a placebo, 3 mg/kg CAF (CAF (3 mg)), or 6 mg/kg CAF (CAF (6 mg)) capsules 60 min before each test with an in-between washout period of at least 72 h. In each trial, the participants performed a countermovement jumps test (CMJ), a modified agility t test (MATT), a repeated sprint ability (RSA), a rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and finally, a CAF side effects questionnaire. Our findings indicate the absence of an ergogenic effect on CMJ, MAT, and RSA performance in the evening after administering CAF (3 mg) or CAF (6 mg) compared to a placebo. Likewise, when CAF was ingested in the morning, there was an improvement in these performances with both CAF (3 mg) and CAF (6 mg), with greater improvement observed after CAF (6 mg). Additionally, neither the CAF dosage nor the TOD had a significant effect on the RPE. The occurrence of side effects increased significantly after the evening ingestion of CAF, particularly with a moderate dose of CAF (6 mg). Our findings indicate that the effectiveness of CAF depends on the TOD and CAF dosage. When ingested in the morning, a moderate dose of CAF (6 mg), rather than CAF (3 mg), is more effective in improving short-term physical performance without affecting CAF side effects in female athletes. Nevertheless, when ingested in the evening, neither dose was sufficient to enhance short-term physical performance, and both dosages increased the incidence of CAF side effects, particularly at a moderate dose. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of time of day on technical and physical performance parameters in young female tennis players. A sample of 12 recreational tennis players (age 24.2 ± 3.8 years) were randomly distributed into two groups. After having their demographics (age, experience, chronotypes), they were measured for body mass, body temperature, serve accuracy, serve speed, countermovement jump, grip strength, agility, and linear speed by counterbalancing method on two different days and at two different times of the day (09:00 and 16:30). The main results revealed that the players had significantly (p < 0.01) higher body temperature and greater values in the grip strength test during the afternoon session in comparison to the morning session. On the other hand, no significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed for other physical and technical performance parameters. The spatial–temporal variations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Akure, a city in southwestern Nigeria, are examined based on multi-year continuous observations using low-cost PM2.5 sensors at six different sites. The average annual concentration of PM2.5 across these sites was measured at 41.0 µg/m3, which surpassed both the Nigerian national air quality standard and the World Health Organization air quality guideline level. PM2.5 levels were significantly higher during the dry season (November–March), often exceeding hazardous levels (over 350 µg/m3), than during the wet season. The analyses of trends in air mass trajectories and satellite data on fire occurrences imply that the transport of dust and accumulation of PM2.5 originating from local/regional open burning activities played crucial roles in increased PM2.5 concentrations during the dry season. Further, site-to-site variations in the PM2.5 levels were observed, with relatively high concentrations at less urbanized sites, likely due to high local emissions from solid fuel combustion, waste burning, and unpaved road dust. Diurnal patterns showed morning and evening peaks at less urbanized sites, accounting for an estimated 51–77% of local emissions. These results highlight the importance of local emission sources in driving spatial–temporal PM2.5 variations within the city and the need for targeted mitigation strategies to address the significant air pollution challenges in Akure and similar regional cities in West Africa. The study analyzed hourly extreme precipitation events in Chongqing and its six sub-regions from 2011 to 2021 during the warm season. Results showed uneven distribution of the 99.7th percentile hourly extreme precipitation threshold, with lower thresholds along the Yangtze River valley and higher thresholds in the Daba Mountains and Wuling Mountains. Both hourly extreme precipitation amount (HEPA) and intensity (HEPI) exhibited higher values in surrounding areas and lower values in the center, with the western, northeast, and southeastern regions experiencing the highest values. Spatial distribution of hourly extreme precipitation frequency varied, with higher frequencies in the northwestern and southern parts of Chongqing. Interannually, hourly extreme precipitation amount slightly increased, while intensity fluctuated. Monthly peak values for amount, frequency, and intensity occurred in July or August, and on a daily scale, the periods from 03:00 to 07:00 and 17:00 to 21: 00 exhibited higher values for amount and frequency, while the period from 11 :00 to 16:00 showed lower values. In summary, the study provided insights into the spatial and temporal patterns of hourly extreme precipitation events in Chongqing and its sub-regions during the warm season, highlighting variations in thresholds, distribution, and trends over the studied period.

BackgroundUnderstanding of possible periodicity of cytokines, chemokines and growth factors is of great interest and provide valuable information for research into pathophysiological mechanism of inflammatory disease and chronic pain. Significant efforts have been made to identify different analytes in saliva. For precision and accuracy in measurement and interpretation of results, it is crucial to know the source of variability, especially the circadian variation for the analytes.ObjectiveThe study aimed to analyze circadian variation in 71 inflammatory markers in both unstimulated and stimulated saliva, as well as plasma, from a sample of healthy individuals.MethodsTen young adults participated. Dynamic changes in daily climatic features may induce a lag in the responses of ecosystems, representing a crucial mechanism in the climate-ecosystem interactions. However, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. With help of long term half-hourly data series (from 2006 to 2022) of carbon fluxes and climate from the Inner Mongolia no-grazing grassland ecosystem eddy covariance station, we conducted the following studies: (i) investigation of the lagged mechanisms between carbon flux and climatic factors, (ii) characterization of diurnal variation patterns that demonstrated the hysteresis between carbon flux and climatic factors, and (iii) assessment of the potential mechanisms underlying the diurnal variation in carbon flux. The results indicated that (i) there is a pronounced asynchrony between the carbon flux and climatic factors. Light saturation is crucial in the lagged relationship between net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and climatic factors. The lag times between NEE and climatic factors were separately explained by moisture and temperature conditions. (ii) Non-linear response relationships were observed between carbon flux and climatic factors. Under similar climatic conditions, the increasing stage of NEE consistently remained lower than the decreasing stage, presenting a distinctive hysteresis loop. (iii) Further investigations revealed the collaborative role of gross primary productivity (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (RECO) in the diurnal variation patterns of NEE. Specifically, the difference in light-use efficiency between the increasing and decreasing stages dominated the difference in GPP for both stages, whereas the difference in air temperature between the increasing and decreasing stages dominated the difference in RECO for both stages. The diurnal variation patterns of NEE were similar across the different parts of growing season. Results furthermore allowed to optimize the light-ues efficiency model, which exhibited remarkable accuracy in daily GPP estimation and effectively simulated the diurnal variation patterns between GPP and climatic factors. In summary, this study provides a theoretical basis for understanding lagged effects and diurnal variations in grassland ecosystems in response to climatic factors. These research findings are of great importance for predicting the future ecosystem carbon sink potential.

Abstract Background Heart rate variability (HRV) may provide objective information about cardiogenic autonomic balance in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). The aim of this study was to characterize the diurnal variation of HRV in individuals with SCI at lesion level T6 and above and lesion level below T6. Methods This was a retrospective analysis of a prior cross-sectional study. Individuals with chronic SCI underwent 24 h recording of the time between consecutive R waves (RR interval) to derive parameters of HRV as follows: standard deviation of all normal-to-normal R–R intervals (SDNN) and square root of the mean of the squared differences between successive R–R intervals (RMSSD) (time domain); and high frequency power (HF), low-frequency power (LF), very low frequency power (VLF), ultra-low frequency power (ULF) and total power (TP) (frequency domain). Changes in the magnitude of HRV outcomes over the 24 h period were investigated using a novel multi-component cosinor model constrained to the form of a three-harmonic Fourier series. Results Participants were grouped as lesion level T6 and above (n = 22) or below T6 (n = 36). Most of them were male (n = 40, 69%) and the median age (interquartile range) was 50.5 (28) years. Both groups exhibited similar diurnal patterns in most HRV metrics. The lowest values occurred in the late afternoon (4–6 pm) and gradually increased, peaking around midnight to early morning (1–6 am). Exceptions included RMSSD, which peaked before midnight, and ULF, which showed a double peak pattern that peaked from 11 am to 1 pm and 4–6 am in participants with lesion level at T6 and above. The HRV values in participants with lesion level T6 and above were generally lower than participants with lesion level below T6, except for peak values of RMSSD, HF and LF. Conclusion This study demonstrated substantial diurnal variation of HRV in participants with SCI in both groups of participants. In clinical and research settings, diurnal variations in HRV must be taken into consideration.

This study explores the impact of coupling cumulus and planetary boundary layer (PBL) parameterizations on diurnal precipitation forecasting during the plum rainy season in Jiangsu Province, China, using a double grid‐nesting approach. Results show that coherent coupling of cumulus (only in the 15 km grid outer domain [O]) and PBL parameterizations leads to improved forecasting of diurnal variations in the morning, afternoon, and the evening. Increasing the frequency of the Kain‐Fritsch (KF) cumulus scheme in [O] enhances subgrid precipitation while reducing grid‐scale precipitation, resulting in a more accurate representation of daytime convective activities and a reduction in over‐forecasting of evening valley and early‐morning precipitation. Additionally, coupling a suitable PBL scheme mitigates the overpredicted afternoon peak by facilitating turbulent mixing to penetrate higher altitudes with a thicker layer, thereby reducing instability energy accumulation. A higher KF frequency in [O] retains less low tropospheric moisture, reducing moisture convergence into the 1 km grid inner domain [I] and decreasing overpredicted daytime precipitation in [I]. Various PBL schemes produce distinct vertical distributions of turbulent moisture and heat transport, impacting convection and precipitation in [I] resolved by cloud microphysics processes. The coherent coupling of these parameterizations maintains a balanced supply of convective energy and water vapor, significantly improving diurnal precipitation forecasts in [I]. This article presents two case studies of patients with metastatic melanoma who experienced daily fluctuations of serous retinal detachment (SRD) while being treated with a combination of encorafenib and binimetinib. The patients reported acute blurred vision that worsened in the morning and resolved by noon. Ophthalmologic examinations and scans revealed an increase in SRD between 8 and 11 AM, followed by complete resolution by 12 PM. The fluctuations persisted throughout the day and were observed during follow-up visits. Despite the subjective complaints, the treatment was not discontinued due to preserved visual acuity and the medications being the last-line therapy for metastatic melanoma. The authors suggest that the timing and dosage of the medication may be correlated with the rapid fluctuation of SRD, and emphasize the importance of appropriate follow-up for patients undergoing this therapy. Improving the accuracy of zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) models is an important task. However, the existing ZTD models still have limitations, such as a lack of appropriate vertical adjustment function and being unsuitable for China, which has a complex climate and great undulating terrain. A new approach that considers the time-varying vertical adjustment and delicate diurnal variations of ZTD was introduced to develop a new grid ZTD model (NGZTD). The NGZTD model employed the Gaussian function and considered the seasonal variations of Gaussian coefficients to express the vertical variations of ZTD. The effectiveness of vertical interpolation for the vertical adjustment model (NGZTD-H) was validated. The root mean squared errors (RMSE) of the NGZTD-H model improved by 58% and 22% compared to the global pressure and temperature 3 (GPT3) model using ERA5 and radiosonde data, respectively. The NGZTD model's effectiveness for directly estimating the ZTD was validated. The NGZTD model improved by 22% and 31% compared to the GPT3 model using GNSS-derived ZTD and layered ZTD at radiosonde stations, respectively. Seasonal variations in Gaussian coefficients need to be considered. Using constant Gaussian coefficients will generate large errors. The NGZTD model exhibited outstanding advantages in capturing diurnal variations and adapting to undulating terrain. We analyzed and discussed the main error sources of the NGZTD model using validation of spatial interpolation accuracy. This new ZTD model has potential applications in enhancing the reliability of navigation, positioning, and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) measurements and is recommended to promote the development of space geodesy techniques. Agroforestry is known to significantly improve long-term land productivity, potentially enhancing the ability to cope with climate stress. However, there is limited information regarding the accurate monitoring of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in rubber-based agroforestry systems. Before GHGs can be accurately estimated, the diurnal variations and suitable sampling times must be studied to reduce the uncertainty of the manual static chamber method. In this study, the soil GHGs emitted from conventional single-row (SR) and improved double-row (DR) rubber plantations were compared across the dry and wet seasons in Hainan, China. A total of 1728 GHG samples from a field trial were collected, analyzed, and related to environmental factors. The results demonstrated that the diurnal fluxes of CO2 in rubber plantations were likely to remain fluctuating, with the maximum typically occurring during the night-time and daytime hours of the dry and wet seasons, respectively. A clearer double-peak (around 2:00 and 14:00) during the dry season and a daytime peak (14:00) during the wet season of the N2O were recorded. In addition to the commonalities, different seasons and different types of GHGs and rubber plantations also differed in their detailed fluctuation times and ranges; therefore, the determination of suitable sampling times should not ignore these factors in certain cases. Based on this study, it was determined that the late afternoon (16:00–18:00) was the suitable sampling time of soil GHGs in rubber plantations, instead of the most common morning times (with an underestimation of 25% on average). In addition, the air humidity during the dry season and the soil temperature during the wet season were both positively correlated with GHGs (p < 0.05). This study highlights the significance of accurately monitoring soil GHGs in rubber-based agroforestry systems, providing a basic reference for the development and management of climate-smart land use practices in rubber plantations. A comparative analysis of the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of rainfall and lightning in coastal and inland areas of Guangdong Province of China during the pre-summer rainy season (PSRS) from 2008 to 2017 reveals distinct patterns. In the inland target region (ITR), rainfall is concentrated in the central and eastern mountainous areas. It exhibits a bimodal diurnal variation, with peaks in the afternoon and morning. The afternoon peak becomes more pronounced during the post-monsoon-onset period because of the increased rainfall frequency. Similarly, in the coastal target region (CTR), rainfall concentrates around mountainous peripheries. However, CTR's rainfall is weaker than ITR's during the pre-monsoon-onset period, primarily associated with the lower-level moisture outflow in CTR, but it strengthens significantly during the post-monsoon-onset period owing to enhanced moisture inflow. CTR's diurnal rainfall variation transitions from bimodal to a single broad peak during the post-monsoon-onset period, influenced by changes in both rainfall frequency and intensity. In contrast to rainfall, the spatiotemporal distribution of lightning centers remains relatively stable during the PSRS. The strongest center is located over ITR's plains west of the rainfall center, with a secondary center in the western plains of CTR. Lightning activity significantly increases during the post-monsoon-onset period, particularly in ITR, primarily because of the increased lightning hours. The diurnal lightning flash density and lightning hours show a single afternoon peak in the two target regions, and the timing of the peak in ITR is approximately two hours later than in CTR. Composite circulation analysis indicates that during early morning, the lower atmosphere is nearly neutral in stratification. The advected warm, moist, unstable airflow, combined with topography, favors convection initiation. In the afternoon, solar radiation increases thermal instability, further enhancing the convection frequency and intensity. Improved moisture and thermal conditions contribute to an increase in rainfall and lightning during the post-monsoon-onset period. Moreover, the occurrence of lightning is found to be closely linked to the most unstable convective available potential energy, low-level vertical wind shear, and updraft intensity. The vertical air pollutant concentrations and their relationships with synoptic- and local-scale air movement have been studied. This study measured the vertical profiles of PM2.5 and O3 using an unmanned aerial vehicle during summer in South Korea and analyzed the characteristics of the measured profiles. To understand the impact of synoptic air movements, we generated and categorized the 48 h air trajectories based on HYSPLIT, and we analyzed how the vertical profiles varied under different categories of long-range transport. We found that the vertical PM2.5 concentration has a positive gradient with altitude when more polluted air was transported from China or North Korea and has negative gradient when cleaner air was transported from the East Sea. Unlike PM2.5, the O3 concentration did not depend significantly on the long-range transport scenario because of the short photochemical lifetime of O3 during summer. Based on hourly rain gauge data during May–September of 2016–20, we analyze the spatiotemporal distributions of total rainfall (TR) and short-duration heavy rainfall (SDHR; hourly rainfall ⩾ 20 mm) and their diurnal variations over the middle reaches of the Yangtze River basin. For all three types of terrain (i.e., mountain, foothill, and plain), the amount of TR and SDHR both maximize in June/July, and the contribution of SDHR to TR (CST) peaks in August (amount: 23%; frequency: 1.74%). Foothill rainfall is characterized by a high TR amount and a high CST (in amount); mountain rainfall is characterized by a high TR frequency but a small CST (in amount); and plain rainfall shows a low TR amount and frequency, but a high CST (in amount). Overall, stations with high TR (amount and frequency) are mainly located over the mountains and in the foothills, while those with high SDHR (amount and frequency) are mainly concentrated in the foothills and plains close to mountainous areas. For all three types of terrain, the diurnal variations of both TR and SDHR exhibit a double peak (weak early morning and strong late afternoon) and a phase shift from the early-morning peak to the late-afternoon peak from May to August. Around the late-afternoon peak, the amount of TR and SDHR in the foothills is larger than over the mountains and plains. Background: Testosterone (T) plays a crucial role in various physiological functions in men, and understanding the variations in T levels during the day is essential for diagnosing and treating testosterone deficiency (TD). Aim: We sought to evaluate the reduction in serum total T (TT) levels throughout the day in men with symptoms of testosterone deficiency and to determine the variables having an impact on the extent of this decline. Methods: The study population consisted of a group of men who within 3 months of each other had all undergone both early morning and afternoon TT level measurements. We did not include patients with a history of a prior orchiectomy, testosterone levels below 100 ng/dL or above 1000 ng/dL, a history of androgen deprivation therapy, or patients on T therapy. Statistical analyses were conducted using descriptive statistics, t-tests, chi-square tests, and correlation calculations. Liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry was used to measure TT, and a change in TT levels greater than 100 ng/dL was considered significant. Using multivariable and univariable analysis, we attempted to define predictors of a decrease in afternoon TT levels. Outcomes: The majority of men showed no significant difference in T levels between morning and afternoon. Results: In total, 506 men with a median age of 65 years were analyzed. The most common comorbidities were hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Levels of TT were measured in the morning and afternoon, and no significant differences in mean T levels based on the time of the test were found. Age was not significantly associated with T levels. Clinical Implications: There was a weak negative correlation between age and the difference between morning and afternoon T levels, with younger men showing more significant variations in T levels. The most considerable differences in T levels were observed in men younger than 30 years. There were no predictors of the magnitude of the T decrease in the afternoon. Strengths and Limitations: Strengths of the study include the number of subjects and the use of liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry for T measurement. Limitations include failure to measure morning and afternoon T levels on the same day, the retrospective nature of the study, and a smaller sample size of patients younger than 30 years. Conclusion: In this study we found no strong link between age and daily T fluctuation, but we observed a decrease in the magnitude of variation with aging. The ozone (O3) variations in southeast China are largely different between mountainous forest areas located inland, and lowland urban areas located near the coast. Here, we selected these two kinds of areas to compare their similarities and differences in surface O3 variability from diurnal to seasonal scales. Our results show that in comparison with the lowland urban areas (coastal areas), the mountainous forest areas (inland areas) are characterized with less human activates, lower precursor emissions, wetter and colder meteorological conditions, and denser vegetation covers. This can lead to lower chemical O3 production and higher O3 deposition rates in the inland areas. The annual mean of 8-h O3 maximum concentrations (MDA8 O3) in the inland areas are ~15 μg·m−3 (i.e. ~15%) lower than that in the coastal areas. The day-to-day variation in surface O3 in the two types of the areas is rather similar, with a correlation coefficient of 0.75 between them, suggesting similar influences on large scales, such as weather patterns, regional O3 transport, and background O3. Over 2016–2020, O3 concentrations in all the areas shows a trend of "rising and then falling", with a peak in 2017 and 2018. Daily MDA8 O3 correlates with solar radiation most in the coastal areas, while in the inland areas, it is correlated with relative humidity most. Diurnally, during the morning, O3 concentrations in the inland areas increase faster than in the coastal areas in most seasons, mainly due to a faster increase in temperature and decrease in humidity. While in the evening, O3 concentrations decrease faster in the inland areas than in the coastal areas, mostly attributable to a higher titration effect in the inland areas. Seasonally, both areas share a double-peak variation in O3 concentrations, with two peaks in spring and autumn and two valleys in summer and winter. We found that the valley in summer is related to the summer Asian monsoon that induces large-scale convections bringing local O3 upward but blocking inflow of O3 downward, while the one in winter is due to low O3 production. The coastal areas experienced more exceedance days (~30 days per year) than inland areas (~5-10 days per year), with O3 sources largely from the northeast. Overall, the similarities and differences in O3 concentrations between inland and coastal areas in southeastern China are rather unique, reflecting the collective impact of geographic-related meteorology, O3 precursor emissions, and vegetation on surface O3 concentrations. The Meiyu-Baiu front is the main weather system that influences the Yangtze-Huai River area of China in early summer. Convective cells along the Meiyu-Baiu front are very active and often lead to regional flooding disasters. In this study, the multiscale window transform (MWT) and MWT-based multiscale energetics analysis are utilized to investigate the dynamic energy transfers during a typical Meiyu-Baiu rainstorm. It is found that baroclinic instability in the lower stratosphere is possibly a primary trigger for the rainstorm and its diurnal variation. The kinetic energy source for a single rainstorm case varies in its evolution. During shallow convection, the rainstorm itself is a kinetic energy (KE) source. The baroclinic canonical transfer from the rainstorm window brings a lot of available potential energy (APE) to the background flow window, and is further converted into the background flow KE. In contrast, during deep convection, the primary source of KE is the background flow. The barotropic canonical transfer from the background flow contributes to the APE, thus bringing KE into the rainstorm. Implications on Meiyu-Baiu rainstorm forecasting are also discussed. Background: Idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) is a leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) diurnal variation rate calculated by spot urinary protein test predicts 1-year nephrotic outcomes as a biomarker of proteinuria severity in patients with IMN. Methods: Patients' baseline demographics, blood and urinary biomarkers, and clinical and pathological characteristics were collected retrospectively. Urine samples were collected at 7:00 (before breakfast) and 19:00 (after dinner) to calculate the UACR diurnal variation rate. A prediction model for no remission (NR) was developed statistically based on differences between prognosis groups. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was performed to evaluate prediction abilities and determine optimal cut-off points of the model and UACR diurnal variation rate alone. Results: The formula for calculating the probability of NR was exp(L)/(1 + exp(L)), where the linear predictor L = – 22.038 + 0.134 × Age (years) + 0.457 × 24-h urinary protein + 0.511 × blood urea nitrogen (BUN) + 0.014 × serum uric acid (SUA) + 2.411 if glomerular sclerosis + 0.816 × fasting blood glucose (FBG)-0.039 × UACR diurnal variation rate (%). Optimal cut-off points for NR prediction by the final model and UACR diurnal variation rate alone were 0.331 and 58.5%, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity were 0.889 and 0.859 for the final model, and 0.926 and 0.676 for UACR diurnal variation rate alone. Conclusion: UACR diurnal variation using spot urinary protein is a simpler way to predict nephrotic outcomes and is a highly sensitive screening tool for identifying patients who should undergo further comprehensive risk assessment. The diurnal variation and distribution of lunar surficial hydration (OH/H2O) is of great significance for understanding the solar wind implantation and water cycle on the Moon. Lunar south pole is an ideal place to study the diurnal variation of surficial hydration due to the large number of repeat observations of the same region, which is very limited in mid‐ or low‐latitudes. Here we showed clear 0.5‐hr interval diurnal variation of surficial hydration at lunar south pole. The variation of hydration band depth with local time is exactly the opposite to the variation of temperature, indicating that lunar surficial hydration changes sufficiently with temperature. This relationship indicates that both the diurnal variation and hydration content are latitude dependent. Our observations support the hypothesis that the diurnal variation of hydration on the Moon is due to the formation of metastable hydroxyl. Plain Language Summary: Hydration (OH/H2O) has been found on the surface of the Moon due to the implantation of solar wind. Hydration contents in the morning and evening were observed to be higher than that at local noon. Lunar south pole is a very good place to study the diurnal variation of surficial hydration compared with other places of the Moon as there are a lot of repeat observations of the same area at different local times. We conducted a detailed investigation of surficial hydration at the lunar south pole based on repeat Moon Mineralogy Mapper near‐infrared data. We found surficial hydration at lunar south pole gradually decreases toward local noon, and then recovers to the morning level at evening. The Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis, YFP) possesses the ability to detect distance through echolocation signals, and its sonar signal signature is adjusted to detect different targets. In order to understand the vocal characteristics of YFPs in different behavioral states and their differential performance, we recorded the vocal activities of YFPs in captivity during free-swimming, feeding, and nighttime resting and quantified their signal characteristic parameters for statistical analysis and comparison. The results showed that the number of vocalizations of the YFPs in the daytime free-swimming state was lower than that in the feeding and nighttime resting states, and the echolocation signals emitted in these three states showed significant differences in the −10 dB duration, −3 dB bandwidth, −10 dB bandwidth, and root-mean-square (RMS) bandwidth. Analysis of the resolution of the echolocation signals of the YFPs using the ambiguity function indicated that their distance resolution could reach the millimeter level. These results indicate that the echolocation signal characteristics of YFPs present diurnal differences and that they can be adjusted with changes in their detection targets. The results of this study can provide certain scientific references and foundations for the studies of tooth whale behavioral acoustics, and provide relevant scientific guidance for the conservation and management of YFPs. Assessment of past-climate simulations of regional climate models (RCMs) is important for understanding the reliability of RCMs when used to project future regional climate. Here, we assess the performance and discuss possible causes of biases in a WRF-based RCM with a grid spacing of 50 km, named WRFG, from the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program (NARCCAP) in simulating wet season precipitation over the Central United States for a period when observational data are available. The RCM reproduces key features of the precipitation distribution characteristics during late spring to early summer, although it tends to underestimate the magnitude of precipitation. This dry bias is partially due to the model's lack of skill in simulating nocturnal precipitation related to the lack of eastward propagating convective systems in the simulation. Inaccuracy in reproducing large-scale circulation and environmental conditions is another contributing factor. The too weak simulated pressure gradient between the Rocky Mountains and the Gulf of Mexico results in weaker southerly winds in between, leading to a reduction of warm moist air transport from the Gulf to the Central Great Plains. The simulated low-level horizontal convergence fields are less favorable for upward motion than in the NARR and hence, for the development of moist convection as well. Therefore, a careful examination of an RCM's deficiencies and the identification of the source of errors are important when using the RCM to project precipitation changes in future climate scenarios. Diurnal variation in regional precipitation in Central and East China has been broadly identified in previous study. This study focused on clarifying not only the differences in the diurnal variation concerning the local precipitation occurred in the Dabie Mountain (DBM) region and the regional precipitation occurred through the middle‐lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin, but also the association mechanism between diurnal variation in local precipitation with differing duration and diurnal modulation of ambient circulations driven by large‐scale background synoptic force or local‐scale orographic force of the DBM. It was found that cases of short duration precipitation (SDP, duration <6 h) and cases of long duration precipitation (LDP, duration ≥6 h) exhibit vastly different patterns of diurnal variations. Further investigation revealed that the primary pattern of the ambient circulation responsible for SDP and LDP is the recycling transformation between a closed cyclonic circulation to a cyclonic wind shear, and the recycling movement of a closed cyclonic circulation in the lower troposphere respectively. Although the diurnal variation in LDP exhibited greater orographic regional differences between the west slope (WS) region and the east slope (ES) region in comparison with that of SDP, topographical sensitivity experiments of the DBM and detailed analysis of background synoptic systems associated with LDP indicated that this regional orographic difference shows closer association with eastward propagation of background synoptic systems than orographic effects of the DBM. Respective strengthening of upward vertical motion at different levels of the troposphere during diurnal variation in SDP and LDP cases provide substantial evidences to reconfirm the close association with orographic force in lower the troposphere for SDP cases and background synoptic force in middle troposphere for LDP cases. Further quantitative diagnosis also confirmed that the orographic effects of the DBM is conducive to cause marked differences in the diurnal variation in SDP cases between the WS region and the ES region via adjustment of the upslope wind over the former and the circumventing wind over the latter. Heart rate (HR) and vagally mediated heart rate variability (HRV) are two distinct biomarkers of cardiac autonomic activity. Decreased cardiac vagal activity (or decreased HRV) in particular has been linked with impairments in the functional flexibility of the central autonomic network (CAN), resulting in impaired stress and emotion regulatory capacities. Decreased HRV is widely used as trait marker of psychopathology. Repetitive engagement in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescence correlates with both deficits in stress and emotion regulation, as well as decreased HRV. Existing research has, however, focused on short-term recordings of HR and HRV under resting and phasic conditions. In this study, we examined whether diurnal variation of cardiac autonomic activity, indexed by cosinor parameters of HR and HRV derived from 48 h of ambulatory ECG recording under natural conditions over a weekend, are altered in female adolescents with NSSI disorder compared to controls (HC; N = 30 per study group). Several important confounds, including physical activity, were controlled for. Female adolescents with NSSI show higher rhythm-adjusted 24 h mean levels and greater respective amplitude of HR, as well as lower rhythm-adjusted 24 h mean levels and smaller respective amplitude of HRV. Peak levels in both HR and HRV in the NSSI group were reached approximately 1 h later compared to HC. Severity of exposure to early life maltreatment might be linked with altered amplitudes of 24 h HR and HRV. Diurnal rhythms of cardiac autonomic activity might hold promise as objective indicators of disordered stress and emotion regulation in developmental psychopathology, and as such should be investigated in future studies with rigorous assessment and control of potential confounds. Over the last three decades, ocean color satellites have recorded continuous change in phytoplankton concentration, and in doing so, the satellites have helped marine remote sensing to become an emerging discipline. However, ocean color satellite has provided the state of global phytoplankton only around midday whereas phytoplankton have significant diurnal variation characteristics over an entire day-night cycle, which would lead to large estimation uncertainty in downstream products. A large global field observations show that the diurnal variation curves can be constructed as the sum of an exponential and a polynomial function. After correction with our diurnal variation curves, the intermission difference between MODISA and MODIST phytoplankton product could be decreased from 7.57% to 6%, which is critical to monitor the long-term changing trend with multi-mission data. When the satellite-recorded chlorophyll-a concentration is simply equal to a daily average value, it results in overestimating uncertainties of 16% and 54% for the northern and southern hemispheric oceans, respectively. Moreover, as a typical example of downstream product of the chlorophyll-a, the coverage of oligotrophic waters can oscillate 76% from day to night simulated from satellite images with our diurnal variation curves, further confirming the importance of global synchronous observation. The geostationary satellite might be an efficient regional tool for diurnal observation, but it must account for its limitations under the weak light conditions of early morning and late afternoon. In the real world, the effects of diurnal variations in ocean properties reach far beyond chlorophyll-a in the global oceans. We anticipate these quantitatively findings to be a starting point for quantitatively re-examining the proper application of ocean color products in scientific communication.
