Volcanic eruptions of the directed blast type are characterized by powerful explosions with a significant lateral pyroclastic density current (PDC) component that can travel at speeds above 100 m s–1 and affect hundreds of square kilometers around a volcano. This study presents preliminary results of a detailed fieldwork and stratigraphic study of deposits associated with the Ocoxaltepec Blast deposit, which originated from the Popocatépetl volcano during a strong eruption associated with the southwestward sector collapse of the volcanic edifice around 23,500 ka BP. Within the study area, which contains 58,870 inhabitants, we found 42 new sites where the blast deposit outcrops, in locations up to 25 km from the volcano crater, with thicknesses up to over 20 m. We divide these blast deposits into two categories: confined channel-fill PDC deposits and unconfined interfluve and upland PDC deposits. With the new data we have estimated the dispersion area of the directed blast to be approximately 338 km2. Twenty-nine of the new outcrops are located outside the hazard polygon associated with concentrated PDCs related to the lowest probability Plinian eruption currently considered from Popocatépetl.

DOI: 10.17014/ijog.v8i3.163Merapi is an active strato volcano located in Central Java. This volcano is regarded as the most active and most dangerous volcano in Indonesia. Since the twentieth century, the activities have comprised mainly the effusive growth of viscous lava domes and lava tongues, with occasional gravitational collapses of parts of over-steepened domes producing pyroclastic flows, commonly defined as “Merapi-Type”. Since October 2010, however, explosive eruptions of a relatively large size have occurred to VEI 4, and some associated pyroclastic flows were larger and had farther reach than any produced on July 2006. These events may also be regarded as another type of eruptions for Merapi. On October26th, 2010 such event happened, even though it was not caused by pyroclastic flows of the dome collapses, about thirty people were killed including Mbah Marijan, known as the Merapi volcano's spiritual gatekeeper, who was found dead at his home approximately 4 km from the crater. The Yogyakarta Palace subsequently confirmed his death. This time the disaster was caused by a sudden directed blast that took place at 17:02 pm throughout Cangkringan, Kinahrejo Village, at the south flank of Merapi Volcano. The victims were the local people who did not predict the blast threatened their areas, because they believed that the pyroclastic flows from the dome collapses as long as they knew, did not threaten their areas, and pyroclastic flows would flow down following the Boyong River as the closest valley to their village. The blast swept an area about 8 km2, reaching about 5 km in distance, deposited thin ash, and toppled all trees to the south around the Kinahrejo and Pakem areas. The blast that reached Kinahrejo Village seemed to have moderate temperatures, because all trees facing the crater were not burnt. However, the victims were affected by dehydration and blanketed by fine ash.

The Tongariro Te Maari crater, New Zealand, erupted for the first time in over 80 years on August 6, 2012. Because it occurred at night, the short-lived eruption prevented direct visual observations, hence presenting some challenges for understanding the complex eruptive sequence and reach of the various explosions. Using 1 Hz Global Positioning System (GPS) data from the local volcano monitoring network, we computed the GPS LC phase residuals and SNR data at the time of the eruption and show that several processes successively affected the signal at the closest GPS station. Firstly, the signal from one of the satellites shows two successive drops of SNR caused by the presence of two distinct dense ash-laden plumes near the vent, produced successively by the second and last of the main eruption pulses. Secondly, we show that a gas-charged debris avalanche and a lateral blast successively entrained hot and/or humid air over 3 km away from the vent, atop the VGKR GPS station. While the limited amount of data prevents fully quantitative analyses and estimates of temperature or humidity in the lateral air flow, our results document the first recorded detection of a small-scale lateral plume by GPS technology. Based on geochronological, petrological, stratigraphical, and sedimentological data, this paper describes the deposits left by the most powerful Holocene eruption of Chachimbiro compound volcano, in the northern part of Ecuador. The eruption, dated between 3640 and 3510 years BC, extruded a ∼650-m-wide and ∼225-m-high rhyodacite dome, located 6.3 km east of the central vent, that exploded and produced a large pyroclastic density current (PDC) directed to the southeast followed by a sub-Plinian eruptive column drifted by the wind to the west. The PDC deposit comprises two main layers. The lower layer (L1) is massive, typically coarse-grained and fines-depleted, with abundant dense juvenile fragments from the outgassed dome crust. The upper layer (L2) consists of stratified coarse ash and lapilli laminae, with juvenile clasts showing a wide density range (0.7-2.6 g cm). The thickness of the whole deposit ranges from few decimeters on the hills to several meters in the valleys. Deposits extending across six valleys perpendicular to the flow direction allowed us to determine a minimum velocity of 120 m s. These characteristics show striking similarities with deposits of high-energy turbulent stratified currents and in particular directed blasts. The explosion destroyed most of the dome built during the eruption. Subsequently, the sub-Plinian phase left a decimeter-thick accidental-fragment-rich pumice layer in the Chachimbiro highlands. Juvenile clasts, rhyodacitic in composition (SiO = 68.3 wt%), represent the most differentiated magma of Chachimbiro volcano. Magma processes occurred at two different depths (∼14.4 and 8.0 km). The hot (∼936 °C) deep reservoir fed the central vent while the shallow reservoir (∼858 °C) had an independent evolution, probably controlled by El Angel regional fault system. Such destructive eruptions, related to peripheral domes, are of critical importance for hazard assessment in large silicic volcanic complexes such as those forming the Frontal Volcanic Arc of Ecuador and Colombia. Abstract: Strikingly similar examples of edifice collapse and directed blast are the 18 May 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens (MSH), Washington, USA, and the 30 March 1956 eruption of Bezymianny Volcano (BZ), Kamchatka, Russia. In these cases, flank failures led to near-instantaneous decompression and fragmentation of intra-edifice cryptodome magma, which produced catastrophic, laterally directed blasts. In both instances, the blast products consisted of juvenile material with bimodal density/vesicularity distributions: low- and high-density modes at 1900 and 2400kgm−3 for BZ, 1600 and 2300kgm−3 for MSH, although the proportion of high-density material is greater at BZ. Blast materials also exhibit striking variety in groundmass crystallinity (<40 to >90vol.%) despite having fairly uniform pheno-crystallinities, suggesting that degassing-driven groundmass crystallization occurred to varying extents within cryptodome magma at both volcanoes. New bulk-rock H2O and ∂D measurements confirm that progressive open-system outgassing occurred prior to both blasts. The correlations between crystallinity, clast density, and bulk H2O contents suggest that syn-blast magma expansion was modulated both by non-uniform volatile distribution within the cryptodome and rheological controls associated with non-uniform crystal content. Spatial heterogeneities in volatiles and crystallinity within a given cryptodome are attributed to distance from the wallrock margin, which probably correlates with timing of magma injection. The greater proportion of high-density material at BZ is speculatively related to lower blast energy compared with MSH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
