In this study, changes in quality parameters of rainbow trout croquettes treated with dill extracts obtained by brewing (BDA) and distillation (DDA) methods were investigated during 61 days of refrigerated storage (+2 ± 1°C). Physicochemical, microbial, and sensory parameters of the rainbow trout croquettes were analyzed once every 4 days. It was observed that the precooking process and additives influenced the nutrient composition and color change of the croquettes. Total volatile base nitrogen and thiobarbituric acid values did not exceed the limit values in any group during refrigerated storage and these values were found as 23.10 ± 0.89 mg/100 g and 3.13 ± 0.08 mg MDA/kg in the control group (C), 21.00 ± 0.92 mg/100 g and 2.77 ± 0.14 mg MDA/kg in BDA group, and 21.70 ± 0.92 mg/100 g and 2.85 ± 0.07 mg MDA/kg in DDA group, respectively. Extract treatments, especially DDA, resulted in a significant reduction in the counts of total aerobic mesophilic and psychotropic bacteria in trout croquettes compared to the control group. It was determined that the sensory scores of all croquette groups decreased during storage and the acceptability scores of the C, BDA, and DDA groups reached on the 33rd, 57th, and 61st days of storage, respectively. According to the results, this work demonstrated that the dill extracts both distilled and brewed can be used as a natural additive to improve the quality and extend the shelf life of rainbow trout croquettes. Introduction: Elastic skin fibers lose their mechanical properties during aging due to enzymatic degradation, lack of maturation, or posttranslational modifications. Dill extract has been observed to increase elastin protein expression and maturation in a 3D skin model, to improve mechanical properties of the skin, to increase elastin protein expression in vascular smooth muscle cells, to preserve aortic elastic lamella, and to prevent glycation. Objective: The aim of the study was to highlight dill actions on elastin fibers during aging thanks to elastase digestion model and the underlying mechanism. Methods: In this study, elastic fibers produced by dermal fibroblasts in 2D culture model were injured by elastase, and we observed the action of dill extract on elastic network by elastin immunofluorescence. Then action of dill extract was examined on mice skin by injuring elastin fibers by intradermal injection of elastase. Then elastin fibers were observed by second harmonic generation microscopy, and their functionality was evaluated by oscillatory shear stress tests. In order to understand mechanism by which dill acted on elastin fibers, enzymatic tests and real-time qPCR on cultured fibroblasts were performed. Results: We evidence in vitro that dill extract is able to prevent elastin from elastase digestion. And we confirm in vivo that dill extract treatment prevents elastase digestion, allowing preservation of the cutaneous elastic network in mice and preservation of the cutaneous elastic properties. Although dill extract does not directly inhibit elastase activity, our results show that dill extract treatment increases mRNA expression of the endogenous inhibitor of elastase, elafin. Conclusion: Dill extract can thus be used to counteract the negative effects of elastase on the cutaneous elastic fiber network through modulation of PI3 gene expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exercise training and medicinal herb supplementation may improve microRNAs (miRNAs) expression associated with obesity. This study aimed to assess the effects of 10 weeks of aerobic training (AT) and dill extract (DE) on miR‐33 and miR‐223 expression of liver in high‐fat diet (HFD)‐induced obese rats. Forty male Wistar rats were fed a defined high‐fat (n = 32) and standard (n = 8, nonobese control [NC]) diet. After obesity induction, obese rats were randomly allocated to four groups: AT, DE, AT + DE, and obese control (OC). Rats were euthanized and plasma and liver tissue samples were collected after the intervention. The liver expression of miR‐33 was lower in the AT, DE, AT + DE, and NC groups compared with the OC group. Also, the liver miR‐223 expression was higher in the AT, DE, AT + DE, and NC groups compared with the OC group. Moreover, the liver expression of miR‐223 in the AT + DE group was higher compared with the AT and DE groups. The AT, DE, AT + DE, and NC groups had lower liver TC compared with the OC group. Also, the plasma level of apolipoprotein B (Apo B) was significantly lower, and liver HDL‐C was significantly higher in the AT + DE and NC groups compared with the OC group. These findings show that long‐term AT combined with the intake of DE may improve the plasma levels of Apo B, and TC and HDL‐C levels in the liver, which is probably due to AT and DE positive effects on miR‐33 and miR‐223 in the liver of obese rats. Practical applications: Aerobic training reduces overweight and obesity health problems, however, the duration and intensity of the exercise training distinguish between individuals. We used an integrated approach combining pharmacological and non‐pharmacological as a medical strategy to prevent HFD‐induced metabolic injury in obese rats. Doogh is a fermented dairy beverage which its shelf-life can be reduced by the activity of microorganisms and chemical and sensory changes of product. This study aimed at producing a heat treated doogh using combination of dill (0.05, 0.075, and 0.1%) and garlic (0.04, 0.06, and 0.08%) extracts as biopreservatives. Recently, main product development and research in the dairy industry have been targeted to the enrichment of products with local natural preservatives and wild-type starters leading to enhanced product safety and sustainability. The objective of the present study was to enhance the safety, quality, sensory acceptability, and sustainability of traditional East European soured milk by adding wild-type Lactococcus lactis bacteria and dill (Anethum graveolens) CO2 extract. All fortified samples showed lower pH (0.05-0.1 points) at Days 1-14, lower D (-) lactate content (8-25%) throughout the whole storage, higher phenolic content (1-2%) and slightly higher overall acceptability at the end of storage compared with unfortified samples. Due to these properties and little impact on the industrial starter and wild L. lactis, dill CO2 extract could be incorporated to soured milk production. Both tested wild-type Lactococcus lactis strains were able to reduce the pH of the milk to standard value 4.46-4.64 in 8 h and produced mainly L (+) lactic acid during storage time. Wild-type L. lactis maintained LAB counts at 1 log unit higher than the control sample until Day 14. Wild-type strains showed high viability during storage time, and actively acidified milk creating acceptable flavor, so they could be promising starters as a single strain or co-starter cultures. In this study, the comparison of physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activity of honey containing added Dill extract in the process and biological methods. Physicochemical tests including moisture, pH, acidity, viscosity, colorimetry, total phenolic compounds by Folin-Ciocalteu method and antioxidant activity (DPPH) for Dill honey, processed and biological honey including Dill extract, and natural honey (control i.e., Alfalfa honey ) were done. The results revealed that the highest antioxidant activity in natural honey was obtained (60.87%). Natural Alfalfa honey had antioxidant activity equal to 43.62%. Although the production of biological honey did not show favorable results with compared to natural honey, the results of processed honey did not significantly differ (P <0.05). Hence the production of processed honey is an effective method for producing honey with different therapeutic properties. But biological honey, in addition to its high cost, has lower antioxidant properties than natural and processed honey. Elastic fibers (90% elastin, 10% fibrillin-rich microfibrils) are synthesized only in early life and adolescence mainly by the vascular smooth muscle cells through the cross-linking of its soluble precursor, tropoelastin. Elastic fibers endow the large elastic arteries with resilience and elasticity. Normal vascular aging is associated with arterial remodeling and stiffening, especially due to the end of production and degradation of elastic fibers, leading to altered cardiovascular function. Several pharmacological treatments stimulate the production of elastin and elastic fibers. In particular, dill extract (DE) has been demonstrated to stimulate elastin production in vitro in dermal equivalent models and in skin fibroblasts to increase lysyl oxidase−like-1 (LOXL-1) gene expression, an enzyme contributing to tropoelastin crosslinking and elastin formation. Here, we have investigated the effects of a chronic treatment (three months) of aged male mice with DE (5% or 10% v/v, in drinking water) on the structure and function of the ascending aorta. DE treatment, especially at 10%, of aged mice protected pre-existing elastic lamellae, reactivated tropoelastin and LOXL-1 expressions, induced elastic fiber neo-synthesis, and decreased the stiffness of the aging aortic wall, probably explaining the reversal of the age-related cardiac hypertrophy also observed following the treatment. DE could thus be considered as an anti-aging product for the cardiovascular system.

The objective of the present study is to detect the genetic effects of methanolic extract of Dill plant in morphological phenotypic big sperm abnormalities of male mice (Mus musculus).Sixty mice were used and divided into three groups by 20 mice for each group and each group was divided in turn into four groups: the first control group, while tested the remaining three groups with alcohol extract in concentrations ranged (0.5, 1, 2) mg/ml within periods (1, 3, 5) week. The results showed the presence of abnormal change in the form of the heads of sperm in the stages of spermatids ,spermatocytes and spermatogonia where it was observed the presence of significant differences (P≤ 0.05) in sperm cells and spermatocytes of the sperm when compared with control while the difference was highly significant (P≤ 0.01) in spermatogonia and for the three doses in a period of 5 weeks. So we can conclude that doses of dill extract may permanently sterilize mice.

Amebic liver abscess is one of the most dangerous extraintestinal amebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica. The most dangerous problem in it is that until now there are no effective drugs for it. This study evaluated the antiamoebic activity of dill extract as a promising agent for hepatoprotection against liver abscess. In vitro studies involved serial dilutions of the extract at final concentrations of 300, 250, 200, 150, 100, 50, 25, and 12.5 mg/ml, Metronidazole (200 mg/ml) was applied as a positive control. In vivo studies in which mice were given orally 1 ml from dill extraction (12.5 mg/ml) once a day for two weeks. In vitro study, all concentrations caused 100% mortality after 72 h compared with the metronidazole (-ve control) which caused approximately 89% mortality. In vivo observed that after the sixth day there aren't any cysts & trophozoites in the faces of the group given dill extract; in addition, values of ALT, AST, ALP, ALB, T.P, cholesterol, triglyceride, liver tissue MDA, SOD, and CAT returned nearly to the healthy group. Also, liver content of NF-κB and IL-1β was reduced in the dill extract-treated group. These results show for the first time that dill extract can be used as an antiamoebic effect in the liver, suggesting that its daily use could help greatly decrease the incidence of this type of infection. • Amoebic liver abscess is one of the most dangerous extraintestinal amoebiasis. • Dill extract has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. • Dill extract can a natural alternative to prevent the moebic liver abscess.
