1. Experimental study on wave attenuation and stability of ecological dike system composed of submerged breakwater, mangrove, and dike under storm surge.

Abstract

• Laboratory experiments were conducted on dike stability under various configurations. • The submerged breakwater induced inconspicuous improvement in dike stability. • Wave impact primarily induced dike failure at high water elevation. • The superposition of structures in mitigating storm surges was not entirely positive. Four tests were conducted to investigate the wave attenuation and dike stability effectiveness of a basic dike, a dike that combined with the submerged breakwater, with mangrove, and with both submerged breakwater and mangrove. Wave variation, hydrodynamic responses (wave scour, wave pressure, pore pressure), and dike stability were investigated. It was found that the submerged breakwater effectively reduced wave height and wave pressure in small wave conditions. However, the dike stability was not improved due to the balance between the positive effect of wave attenuation and the negative effect of water elevation increase in large wave conditions. The mangrove's wave attenuation effects were remarkable at both small and large wave conditions, leading to smaller hydrodynamic responses and ultimately contributing to a significant improvement in the dike stability. The combination of submerged breakwater and mangrove induced the best wave attenuation effect in shallow water with the smallest hydrodynamic responses. However, the presence of submerged breakwater amplified water elevation and significant wave height in deep water conditions, inducing stronger wave impact and more intense wave scour, ultimately resulting in the weaker stability of the dike. 2. Simulation of overtopping and seepage induced dike failure using two-point MPM.

Abstract

Fluvial dikes are important engineering works for protecting river valleys from flooding, so the stability of them is of great importance. In this paper, we apply a two-point two-phase formulation of the Material Point Method (MPM) to investigate the dike stability problem under the action of overtopping flows. Such a method has been incorporated in the Anura3D software (www.anura3d.com). In the model, the behaviours of soil and water are analysed in a single framework, so the interactions between the two phases are fully dynamic. The computational results agree well with the laboratory experiments. Parametric studies have been carried out to examine the effectiveness of various dike stability measures. With up to 15% of the world’s population being protected by dikes from flooding, climate-change-induced river levels may dramatically increase the flood risk of these societies. Reliable assessments of dike stability will become increasingly important, but groundwater flow through dikes is often oversimplified due to limited understanding of the important process parameters. To improve the understanding of these parameters, we performed a global sensitivity analysis on a comprehensive hydro-stability model. The sensitivity analysis encompassed fifteen parameters related to geometry, drainage conditions and material properties. The following three sensitivity settings were selected to characterize model behavior: parameter prioritization, trend identification and interaction qualification. The first two showed that dike stability is mostly dependent on the dike slope, followed by the type of subsurface material. Interaction quantification indicated a very prominent interaction between the dike and subsurface material, as it influences both groundwater conditions and dike stability directly. Despite our relatively simple model setup, a database containing the results of the extensive Monte Carlo analysis succeeded in finding most of the unsafe sections identified by the official inspection results. This supports the applicability of our results and demonstrates that both geometry and subsurface parameters affect the groundwater conditions and dike stability.

4. Surrogate modelling framework for probabilistic assessment of slope stability of dikes on heterogeneous soils

Abstract

Climatic conditions in uence peak discharges in rivers and change sea levels; therefore, attention to the safety of dikes is of ever growing importance. Macro instability is one of the dike failure mechanisms that can inundate the hinterland. Soil heterogeneity plays an important role in assessing dike safety, especially for slope stability, because it is a major source of uncertainty. To assess a dike network for safety, numerical simulations for a full probabilistic analysis can be computationally expensive. Therefore, this study investigates how to build a state-of-the-art data-driven framework from a numerical model to predict the safety margins from the macro stability of dikes. Inputs and outputs of tens of thousands D-Stability simulations were used to create a training dataset. The most relevant features were selected based on global sensitivity analysis and the representation of soil heterogeneity in the framework. The maximisation of Shannon's information entropy and the generation of the training dataset was achieved by employing a smart sampling strategy for the input parameters. The sampling strategy consists of a Latin hypercube optimised uncorrelated uniform distributed dataset combined with a correlated dataset for optimal training eciency. The uncertainty due to soil heterogeneity is represented by a Gaussian random eld with a trend. This trend is commonly determined from a geotechnical cone penetration test. With a CPT, it also is possible to nd the vertical scale of uctuation, which is parametrised by the correlation length of the uctuations in soil strength. The second-order Markov correlation function is used to represent the correlation of the random elds. The Gaussian random eld is later mapped onto 16 stacked horizontal layers to model the heterogeneous soil properties. The surrogate model consists of an ensemble of thirteen machine learning models. 6. Influence of rapid draw down on dike stability

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find the influence of rapid drawdown on dike stability with the Delta21 project as case study. The Delta21 project is a proposed plan for a waterdefence system in front of the Haringvliet, The Netherlands. Its main element is a water retaining lake with an extensive pumping and turbine system. Whenever other storm surge barriers close, water from inland rivers can be pumped to the sea. The water retaining lake can act as an energy storage system as well by using the turbines to generate electricity at moments of high energy prices. The pumping system has the capacity to reduce the water level with 17.5m in 12hours. The dike surrounding the lake has a gradual slope as the height/width ratio below the water line is 1/20. It consists fully of a homogeneous and permeable fine sand. The estimation of material properties were based on limited CPT data, samples from the adjacent Maasvlakte II and empirical relationships. The rapid decrease of the water level in the lake causes rapid draw down conditions in the dike. Hereby the external hydrostatic pressure is reduced due to unloading effect of removing water, while a delay in the dissipation of pore pressures inside the dike is produced. This causes stress relaxation and slope instability. The research was performed using a numerical model verified with physical modeling in the form of centrifuge tests. For the numerical model the finite element model PLAXIS2D was used. A fully coupled flow deformation analysis was chosen, which can solve the full interaction between deformation, consolidation and groundwater flow simultanously in the same phase. It considers a reduced permeability and degree of saturation in the unsaturated zone. The Hardening Soil small strainmodel was selected as constitutive model due to the potential of capturing hysteresis in the stress-strain regime. Abstract

The dike engineering is an important part in the system of flood controlling. landslides is the main reason that leads to the dike break.In order to study the dike stability in an irrigation area, the dike slope stability is analyzed based on the strength reduction method and finite element method, and the safety factors of dike slope under the four typical calculation cases are calculated in this paper.The result shows that the dike is not steady under the rapid drawdown and it is steady under the othe cases,and the treatment measures should be taken to prevent severe disasters during flood. All the relevant information and simulation results are fed into an interactive decision support system that helps dike managers and city authorities to make informed decisions in case of emergency and in routine dike quality assessment. In addition to that, a Virtual Dike computational module has been developed for advanced research into dike stability and failure mechanisms, and for training the artificial intelligence module on signal parameters induced by dike instabilities. This paper describes the UrbanFlood EWS generic design and functionality, the computational workflow, the individual modules, their integration via the Common Information Space middleware, and the first results of EWS monitoring and performance benchmarks. Abstract

Summary The paper describes the concept and implementation details of integrating a finite element module for dike stability analysis “ Virtual Dike ” into an early warning system for flood protection. The module operates in real-time mode and includes fluid and structural sub-models for simulation of porous flow through the dike and for dike stability analysis. Real-time measurements obtained from pore pressure sensors are fed into the simulation module, to be compared with simulated pore pressure dynamics. Implementation of the module has been performed for a real-world test case, an earthen levee protecting a sea-port in Groningen, The Netherlands. Sensitivity analysis and calibration of diffusivities have been performed based on pore pressure sensor data during tidal fluctuations. An algorithm for automatic diffusivities calibration for a heterogeneous dike is proposed and studied. Analytical solutions describing tidal propagation in a one-dimensional saturated aquifer are employed in the algorithm to generate initial estimates of diffusivities.

14. Tiaozini Land reclamation: Preliminary port area design

Abstract

In 2009 the Chinese State Council approved the developing plan for Jiangsu coastal zone that was part of the national developing strategy. The plan set goals to reclaim 21 areas in the Jiangsu coastal zone with main objective to achieve an economical impulse for the Jiangsu province. The Tiaozini reclamation acted as a pilot project and was assigned a priority area due to its size and strategic position between Lianyungang and Shanghai. The proposed occupation guidelines for Tiaozini hardly met the objective of giving an economical impulse and revision of the area was required. The northern part of Tiaozini was still under construction and was further assessed in this study. The Dutch layer approach was explicitly used as an analyzing tool to make a top-down preliminary design for the Tiaozini port area using Dutch norms and standards. This tool allowed the study to be divided in three conditioning layers; occupation, network and base layer allowed for a multidisciplinary and iterative process. The most suitable occupation was determined using macroeconomic, industry-specific and port analysis. Due to the favorable investment climate ensuring future potential, lack of competitors and presence of partners, an efficiently organized public-private petrochemical port area was determined as preliminary occupation for the northern part of Tiaozini. The supporting transport network should take the following criteria into account: modal split, flexibility, sustainability and capacity. These criteria were determined by the characteristics of the petrochemical industry. The connection between the network and base layer was made by the use of the main enabling road connection. The embankment settlement for the required six-lane highway was calculated using D-Settlement numerical program in combination with NEN-Bjerrum calculation method and checked using analytical NEN-Koppejan method.
