Digital Humanities research often provides opportunities for collaboration – but it just as often requires collaboration. The demands placed on DH projects in terms of technical skills and know-how are such that collaboration and a reliance on adequate research infrastructures become a necessity.

Digital access to social sciences and humanities (SSH) research resources is necessary to enable broad use. For this purpose, a discovery platform for SSH resources was created. This paper describes its development, based on user, economic, and computer science research methods, and illustrates how such a platform supports social exchange.

This paper will discuss how interdisciplinarity, collaboration and participation have been re-imagined in large-scale digital cultural heritage projects, taking the Congruence Engine project as a case study, by highlighting how the interplay between the collaborative nature of DH, and systematic action research can bring together the human and computational.

Crowdsourcing in cultural heritage is rich in opportunities for collaborative, interdisciplinary research and practice. This presentation celebrates and calls for input and expansion of a White Paper that sets out current challenges and opportunities, and provides recommendations for the future of crowdsourcing in cultural heritage and the digital humanities.

In our workshop, we invite Digital Humanists to explore the OpenMethods metablog as an innovative publication forum and to strengthen the representation of traditionally underrepresented languages and actors in Digital Humanities - particularly non-Anglophone, under-resourced languages (such as languages with non-Latin scripts) or female tool-makers - on the platform in particular and in the Digital Humanities discourse in general.

This panel will explore the various aspects of what is involved, not only in conceiving and building a 3D infrastructure, but in creating 3D Scholarly editions and developing the viewers that allow stories to be created around them. It will also explore issues around training the community of the infrastructure.

This paper aims to elucidate the origin and metadata of land surveying maps, which meticulously document the landforms and features of various regions across mainland China between 1895 and 1944. Additionally, the digitization process of this research will be outlined. Furthermore, this paper will introduce the user interface of CHMap from two perspectives: firstly, CHMap as a platform for land survey maps, and secondly, CHMap as a tool for linking maps and images from disparate eras and sources.

Establishing and operating research infrastructures designed for long-term use is a challenge. This holds especially true in small to medium scale institutes carrying out short-term projects. In our presentation, we would like to describe our approach to building an infrastructure for collecting and linking local cultural heritage data in Saxony.

The project develops an open-source machine learning platform for East Asian Studies, the first one in the United States.Our platform will be so versatile that humanists will not have to devote time to learning various digital tools. With our sample codes and tutorials, researchers can conduct computer-aided research.

In this half-day workshop, participants will learn how to use different components of the Linked Editing Academic Framework (LEAF) digital scholarship production platform: encoding and annotating texts, entity tagging and reconciliation, coordinating different types of media files into compound objects and galleries, managing metadata and workflow tracking, and producing a simple collection of objects. Using sample text and image objects, with the possibility of experimenting with their own materials, participants will come away with an understanding of how LEAF supports collaborative digital scholarly production in an open-source, open-access web environment.

This research in progress studies how human characters are represented along the lines of age, race, class and gender in the illustrations of historical Dutch-language children's literature (1800-1940).

This paper explores the practices and experiences we have learned from developing an Open Science Infrastructure in the Asia Pacific. The paper purposes a unique three-pillar model; Advanced Technology to improve internet connectivity, a Knowledge Base on internet engineering, and Community Building across universities.

In Digital Humanities "Distant Listening" scholarship with sound, the expectation is that the data set will be clean and audible and that its metadata will be descriptive and informative.[1] In contrast to this notion, this talk demonstrates the importance of distortions in approximately seventy-five brief "tracks" or recorded songs, stories, and explanations from a folklore recording trip Zora Neale Hurston took in 1935 to Florida and Georgia with Alan Lomax and Mary Elizabeth Barnicle for the Library of Congress. Close listening to her 1935 recordings reveals that social and technical distortions are in line with how Hurston expresses the complexities of authority, authenticity, and subjectivity in her writings, which amplifying black epistemologies of self-making and creating resonant possibilities for imagining new transgressive formulations of cultural identity. This talk will consider how distortions play an important in large-scale digital projects with sound in the humanities.

OPERAS Innovation Lab provides targeted guidance for scholars seeking to disseminate their outputs in an innovative way. This poster presents three case studies of workflows for innovative scholarly communication: 1) toolkit/anthology; 2) interdisciplinary online journal; 3) software services. The workflows will serve as blueprints for SSH scholars.

This paper reports on research into the potential expansion of non-academic use for computational literary studies infrastructure. It relates findings regarding usage patterns for fictional narratives, as well as the results of interviews with representatives of relevant fields on their experience of using literary and computational methods and data.

Based on comparative case studies of four digital humanities projects, this paper identifies six community-centric factors in the sustainability of digital scholarship: factors that transcend organizational, technical, or financial considerations, and which relate to and rely upon the communities that support and surround digital humanties projects.

In this panel we offer a multifaceted and interdisciplinary perspective on the development of the Sloane Lab. We contextualise it both within a wider, nationally-funded drive to make the UK's cultural heritage, and information about it, computationally tractable and the more internationally-positioned work of 'Collections as Data'.

I will present the project of building a database of historical Polish lexicons. The most important dictionaries with Middle Polish material will be digitized in steps: HTR recognition, XML tagging, morphosyntactic tagging. We intend to prepare the API that could be connected with sources of Middle Polish or Latin used in Poland.

Encouraging the use of the digitized materials is a complex goal that involves each - cultural heritage institutions, research funding frameworks, and researchers to some degree. These developments have led a few institutions to initiate GLAM Labs (glamlabs.io) that focus on developing the digital opportunities afforded by galleries, libraries, archives, museums. Following the role models in the international community, the National Library of Estonia has been developing a virtual lab - a portal and an interface for users to gain access and find uses to digital data. This entails keeping in mind the interests of many stakeholders - balancing the needs and opportunities for the library with the requirements for the collection user. We present the virtual lab, its tools and datasets, as launched in January 2023. We will show the journey there and the conclusions made on the basis of this. During the development, we have piloted several interface options to access text sources in bulk and share our data in multiple accessible formats. We've conducted a service design as well as a legal analysis to understand the interests of the representative members of the potential user community and how the library can respond to them. Our virtual lab has aimed to learn from the GLAM Labs in other institutions (see e.g. Mahey et al. 2019). We aim to build our user community so that the researchers get the credit due for their work, and will be offered a place to showcase their work. So that the work done in transforming and enhancing the data by the users would find its way back to the library. And that library itself would get feedback on its collections and find value in its novel potential uses. We will discuss the lessons learned during the development process. We offer access to the open textual resources among the newspapers, periodicals, and book publications 1800-2022, the data from the national bibliography, as well as a number of thematic collections built around it. Our tools include a few visualization tools and interfaces to manipulate and query the data online. And we feature a number of blog posts based on the case studies performed on our collections by students and researchers. These digital collections offer new opportunities for cultural heritage institutions as well as their visitors and users, but the process towards it requires learning from various perspectives. Through encouraged use cases, the users learn better to anticipate and benefit from what the library collections can offer, and the library can incrementally improve the resources that it can offer the users while learning about the value found in these resources. We argue that for a successful project, collaboration is key between these different actors based on their interests, and aspire to offer a good example in how this can be organized in a small community. VedaWeb is an established research website for the ancient Vedic text Rigveda. It now evolves into an open collaborative platform for researching and sharing Vedic Sanskrit language data in a broader perspective. How will the new platform stimulate collaborative processes among researchers of Vedic Sanskrit and beyond?

ARS is a networking platform for architecture research that enables new interdisciplinary collaborations. The presentation outlines the infrastructural need for a platform like ARS and explains the underlying collaboration model relying on graph-technology. A showcase of the prototype displays and discusses learnings from first user tests and the development process.

Initially, Digital Medievalist was understood to be a group of supportive scholars, that wanted to test digital methods for their research projects. Since then, it has developed into a scholarly community with 1500 members and has become an integral part of the field nowadays called Digital Humanities.

This poster describes the World Historical Gazetteer project software platform (WHG), with a particular focus on its collection-building features. The WHG is linking and providing access to records of historical place attestations contributed by researchers working in numerous fields within the humanities and social sciences.

While the calls for reproduction studies in Computational Literary Studies (CLS) have become louder, practical aspects, especially the interplay of the components involved in the research process (code, data, environments, infrastructures, etc.) proves to be a hurdle for reproducing research. We present a way to fully reproducible research using a Docker-based approach: We exemplarily implemented it for a network-analytic study on a corpus of about 3,000 theater plays derived from the DraCor project. We demonstrate that the use of highly portable, self-contained digital artifacts (Docker images) containing runnable research environments not only allow for a full reproduction of the study, but also offer ways to implement different scenarios of repeating research (e.g. same code, different data).

Living with Machines rethinks the impact of technology on the lives of ordinary people during the Industrial Revolution. The project queries metadata for large-scale newspaper collections. This poster describes the workflow of building a database infrastructure that facilitates quicker and easier humanities research on heterogeneous and complex newspaper data.

The contemporary focus on the 'data problem' in the humanities centers on the uniqueness of humanities data. We argue this is a mistake. Humanities data are not special because of what they are, but rather because of how they are used. The "problem" with Humanities data lies in the use-case.

Our workshop will continue conversations about building community around multilingual DH research in non-Latin alphabets and right-to-left script languages. Participants will think through the languages, skill sets, aspirations and challenges of digital researcher personas working in these languages and scripts through a guided discussion and community co-writing experience.

With this paper we would like to reflect on Proyecto Humboldt Digital's strategy for building digital capacities –that is, learning new skills and methodologies at an individual and organizational level– through collaboration. The international collaboration established in Proyecto Humboldt Digital (ProHD) has not been limited to carrying out a technical workflow but continuously organizes the exchange of research activities and experiences, and builds on a wide set of both internal (team oriented) and external (community oriented) training activities. Despite restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, short stays in both Havana and Berlin have taken place since 2019 as well as monthly meetings in virtual format; more recently, in 2022 an international DH conference and a workshop about digital scholarly editions took place in La Habana (Cuba) organized by the team members. During these encounters, we were able to define software requirements, present our main results, share the main issues and progress made in retrospect, and plan our following activities in order to publish online a collection of texts related to Alexander von Humboldt's trip to Cuba in the 19th century.

Drawing on our forthcoming edited collection, On Making in the Digital Humanities: The scholarship of digital humanities development in honour of John Bradley, this panel will bring together papers on the practices of making in the digital humanities organised around and inspired by the interdisciplinary career of John Bradley.

The multilingual DraCor platform (https://www.dracor.org) represents a valuable resource for literature and theatre scholars, allowing them to host, access and analyse thousands of plays from Antiquity to the XX century. After briefly presenting the workflow for the ingestion of new plays into our ecosystem, we focus on the collaborative side of our endeavours, demonstrating how external scholars can benefit from a range of tools and guides to easily prepare and submit their own collections. As a showcase of the process, we present three corpora currently in production, focusing respectively on Ukrainian, Czech, and Early Modern English literature.

This paper describes the process of gathering, aggregating, harmonizing, and publishing epistolary metadata through collaboration with Finnish cultural heritage (CH) organizations in order to create an inclusive archive for bottom-up analyses of 19th-century epistolary culture in the Grand Duchy of Finland (1808/09-1917). The authors are working in the digital humanities consortium project Constellations of Correspondence (CoCo) [1]. The unified metadata collections are harmonized, linked, enriched, and published on a Linked Open Data (LOD) service, and as a semantic web portal. In Europe, there are several digital humanities projects using well-curated metadata (detailed information about senders, recipients, dates, and places) from edited letter collections - like CKCC [2], correspSearch [3, 4], the Early Modern Letters Online (EMLO) [5][6], Norkorr [7], and SKILLNET [8]. In our project, most of the data come from unpublished collections scattered around different Finnish CH organizations. Collaboration with these CH organizations is pivotal for the successful outcome of the project. It requires a dialogue with them throughout the whole project period in the form of seminars and site visits, as well as sharing blogs and newsletters, also after the organizations have provided their letter metadata. We have also already seen that some of the participating organizations are prepared to clean their metadata or catalogue previously uncatalogued archival material to provide better and more metadata for the project. We will discuss this two-way process using the Finnish National Gallery as a case study. An important challenge yet to be studied profoundly is, if and how the CoCo project will be able to deliver to the CH organizations their metadata in an enriched format. In the first phase of the project, we conducted a survey that was sent to over 100 CH organizations (extending from small local museums to official central archives). The paper describes how the information was collected and how the survey was constructed in order to provide us with detailed enough information regarding their 19th-century collections and metadata formats. At the same time, we had to keep the query succinct in order to make the answering as effortless as possible. As to the data processing, we began with more than 350 000 letters, from eight different sources, each in its own digital format. Although the received data is mostly structured, we needed to parse running text to retrieve metadata in nearly every collection. Moreover, we had to analyze each dataset and identify possible structural mistakes. Furthermore, some records required Natural Language Processing to get actor names (e.g. senders, recipients) in dictionary format. The most difficult task has been to process word files which contain correspondence metadata in a variety of formats, easily understandable to humans but difficult for computational processing. A harmonizing data model for epistolary metadata collections was developed, which builds on international standards like CIDOC CRM to promote interoperability. The most central classes are Letter, Place and Actor. Also, provenance and archival information are included. Finally, the actor data is enriched by linking it to external databases like Wikidata and the Finnish AcademySampo and BiographySampo. These external sources provide detailed biographical information, e.g., times and places of birth and death, name variations, occupations, or genealogical relationships. Information present in the letter metadata like actor names and times of sending and receiving is used for matching entities between our data and the external databases, and further to reconcile the actors between data sources. Citizen science is becoming a common tool to index historical records. We use cluster analysis on the engagement of participants in the 'Historical Database Suriname and Curaçao' citizen science project to build user profiles. These engagement patterns can be used to enhance and sustain participation of citizens.

This panel will explore the processes of establishing an evidence base for the development of a new Digital Humanities Association for the UK and Ireland. Presentations will discuss: the landscape of DH in the UK and Ireland; the development of a values-led organisation; community, consultation and inclusivity; the importance of advocacy for DH and the role of a DH Association in national policy-making; and the centrality of training and the development of career pathways in and from DH. A concluding presentation will reflect on the value of international collaboration, both between Ireland and the UK and among international subject associations and infrastructures.

The proposed paper will discuss collaboration between various stakeholders in the open access publishing ecosystem in Poland and the current challenges in developing new sustainability models for publishing digital research outputs, particularly monographs, in OA.

This workshop aims at supporting researchers interested in creating a workflow in the SSH Open Marketplace, to share best practices methods with the community. Selected participants will be supported by the members of the Editorial Board of this discovery portal to write and document their research scenarios.

In this paper, we present Computer-Assisted Semantic Text Modelling (CASTEMO), a novel but now well-developed approach to transformation of textual resources into rich, structured data stored in JSON-based document databases, and the related InkVisitor research environment.

Our goal is to create guidelines for contemplating inclusion in digital cultural heritage collections, that helps practitioners consciously think about new digital paradigms of cultural memory. Our paper will show our current work on a catalogue of digital collections, four case studies, and a workshop, that examines issues related to inclusivity.

This paper presents the first release of a graph database of derived data of online fiction corpora taken from various sources in five different languages (English, Spanish, Italian, Indonesian, Korean).

This workshop is a participant-led knowledge sharing platform for digitally-oriented labs in the humanities and social sciences. The workshop will provide the opportunity to share experiences and learn from others on the intellectual and operational function of labs, and to exchange good practices for successful and sustainable digital labs.

This paper reports on an Australian Research Council-funded project focusing on development of digital tools to map biographical narratives and data relating to legacies of British slavery in Australia from the 1830s onward, producing new understandings of the continuing impact of slavery wealth in shaping colonial immigration, investment, and law.

This panel discusses the Pelagios Network, a decade-long collaboration that has been developing methods, tools and communities for linking Humanities resources online. Our discussion will focus on managing a series of collaborative tensions between decentralisation and coordination, sustainability and development, and individual needs and community growth.

Digital editions, text collections, and lexical resources each have their own tradition in the (digital) humanities and at the same time, the data domains also share common methods and practices of indexing, modeling, and analysis. The Text+ consortium in the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)is dedicated to the handling of research data in the three aforementioned research domains and is exploring methods and practices of cross-domain use of datasets and the resulting collaboration between research fields. The poster shows the connections between the three data domains in Text+ using a concrete example: the edition of letters by the German writer Jean Paul (Jean Paul Friedrich Richter, 1763–1825) of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW). The poster was accepted and presented at the DH2023 conference in Graz.

We propose a framework for the construction of 4D scientific models for cities of the past. It leverages both the use of computational methods for bootstrapping, and a collaborative interface for visualisation and edition. This permits to continuously enrich the model and dynamically update it through procedural modelling.

In this poster we present the ongoing development of an integrated free and open source toolchain for semantic annotation of digitised cultural heritage. The toolchain development involves the specification of a common data model that aims to increase interoperability across diverse datasets and to enable new collaborative research approaches.

The SSH Open Marketplace is a discovery portal which pools and contextualises resources for Social Sciences and Humanities research communities: tools, services, training materials, datasets, publications and workflows. This poster presents how this service can provide insights into the use of tools, methods and standards in the DH research communities.
