Introduction: Digital exclusion is a growing challenge when deploying digital patient care pathways and a potential barrier to widespread implementation, especially in the field of smartphone-based self-monitoring of vision. This retrospective case series seeks to examine the characteristics of individuals who adhere to a smartphone home monitoring programme using the Alleye app for retinal disease, with a focus on digital exclusion, social deprivation and clinical outcomes. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 89 patients with retinal pathologies including diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions at Moorfields Eye Hospital participating in an Alleye home monitoring programme between April 2020 and November 2022. Postcodes were used to determine the Digital Exclusion Risk Index (DERI) and the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) rebased for London. Clinical information from the electronic patient record and Alleye app usage data were extracted for each patient. Associations between the DERI/IMD, clinical parameters and app use were examined using multivariable regression models. Results: Mean DERI was 2.56 (standard deviation [SD] = 0.36), IMD was 6.25 (SD = 2.79), visual acuity (VA) in the better eye at study entry was 83.28 Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) letters (SD = 7.92), and mean follow-up was 344.46 days (SD = 260.13). During the observation period, 36% received an intravitreal injection (IVI) and VA fell by at least ten letters in approximately one in four patients. In 87.5% of patients requiring IVI, the use of the app increased. We found no association between clinical parameters and programme adherence for DERI or IMD. Conclusions: We found no association between high digital exclusion risk and high social deprivation with monitoring adherence to smartphone-based self-monitoring of vision, contrary to the currently available evidence. This suggests that smartphone-based self-monitoring of vision is accessible to population groups of varying digital exclusion and social deprivation risk, and can be safely employed to monitor clinical progression. Financial and digital inclusion are key consumer policy agendas for governments globally. Yet, despite the importance of online interfaces to manage finances and make payments, the link between financial and digital inclusion remains under-researched. This study analyses the link between digital and financial inclusion drawing on data from a survey conducted of 922 adults in UK in 2018. The results suggest that the active use of banking services depends on digital skills. The level of self-rated internet proficiency predicts a variety of ways in which consumers use financial services in the management of their finances, including contactless payments, bank transfers, and the use of multiple banking services. This holds even when controlling for socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. Conversely, household income is more important as a determinant than digital skills in checking account balance online. This possibly reflects that liquidity constrained consumers generally prefer to monitor their spending using cash as this provides more precise information on their spending and remaining balance. Advancements in digital technologies have transformed the world by providing more opportunities and possibilities. However, elderly persons have several challenges utilizing modern technology, leading to digital exclusion, which can negatively impact sustainable development. This research attempts to address the current digital exclusion by addressing the challenges older people face considering evolving digital technologies, focusing on economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Three distinct goals are pursued in this study: to perform a detailed literature review to identify gaps in the current understanding of digital exclusion among the elderly, to identify the primary factors affecting digital exclusion in the elderly, and to analyze the patterns and trends in different countries, with a focus on differentiating between High-Income Countries (HICs) and Lower Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). The research strategies used in this study involve a combination of a literature review and a quantitative analysis of the digital exclusion data from five cohorts. This study uses statistical analysis, such as PCA, chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, and two-way ANOVA, to present a complete assessment of the digital issues that older persons experience. The expected results include the identification of factors influencing the digital divide and an enhanced awareness of how digital exclusion varies among different socio-economic and cultural settings. The data used in this study were obtained from five separate cohorts over a five-year period from 2019 to 2023. These cohorts include ELSA (UK), SHARE (Austria, Germany, France, Estonia, Bulgaria, and Romania), LASI (India), MHAS (Mexico), and ELSI (Brazil). It was discovered that the digital exclusion rate differs significantly across HICs and LMICs, with the UK having the fewest (11%) and India having the most (91%) digitally excluded people. It was discovered that three primary factors, including socio-economic status, health-related issues, and age-related limitations, are causing digital exclusion among the elderly, irrespective of the income level of the country. Further analysis showed that the country type has a significant influence on the digital exclusion rates among the elderly, and age group plays an important role in digital exclusion. Additionally, significant variations were observed in the life satisfaction of digitally excluded people within HICs and LMICs. The interaction between country type and digital exclusion also showed a major influence on the health rating. This study has a broad impact since it not only contributes to what we know academically about digital exclusion but also has practical applications for communities. By investigating the barriers that prevent older people from adopting digital technologies, this study will assist in developing better policies and community activities to help them make use of the benefits of the digital era, making societies more equitable and connected. This paper provides detailed insight into intergenerational equity, which is vital for the embedding principles of sustainable development. Digital inequalities have been exacerbated for many marginalized populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is no different for one of the most marginalized populations in the United States, incarcerated people. Due to the pandemic, in-person visitations as well as educational and vocational programming were, and in many cases remain, suspended across numerous correctional facilities, leaving incarcerated people even more socially isolated than before the pandemic. Although an increasing number of facilities provide prison tablets for entertainment and communication purposes, high prices for electronic messages, video visitations, books, and entertainment content leave incarcerated people and their families unable to pay for these services. As best practice examples from California, Maine, New York City, and Pennsylvania demonstrate, connecting prisons to the internet and allowing incarcerated people secure access to the internet is possible, and long overdue. The pandemic has highlighted these issues and provides an opportunity to overhaul outdated ideas about prison communication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the association between frailty and internet (non-)use, using representative data – collected between 2004 and 2021 – of community dwelling people aged 60 and older living in Flanders, Belgium (N = 43,048). Multidimensional frailty was measured by the Comprehensive Frailty Assessment Instrument (CFAI), which is a reliable and valid instrument to assess physical, psychological, social and environmental dimensions of frailty. Internet use was dichotomised into users and non-users. Multivariable regression analyses revealed that the physical domain is the most strongly related frailty factor to internet (non-)use, and this has been a constant trend since 2004. Those in the high physical frailty group have the highest probabilities of being non-user and are up to 8.0% more likely to be non-user than those in the 'no-low' physical frailty group. Future research should investigate how human-technology interaction can be improved and make internet technologies more manageable for physical frail older adults. However, average marginal effects indicate that sociodemographic variables are more strongly related to internet (non-)use than frailty domains. Due to the dramatic spread of information and communication technologies tools increased by the forced lockdown, the digital transition of all economic sectors has become a prime concern for all European countries. Not only that having digital skills and competences was a question that swiftly turned into a priority, but also developing a well-equipped smart infrastructure capable of reducing the digital exclusion of socially disadvantaged groups. Taking into consideration the profound impact of digital technologies on the educational environment, the main objective of this paper is investigating the digital transformation of the Romanian pre-university system after a decade paved with numerous regulatory changes, a global pandemic crisis, and a refugee crisis generated by the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine up to the Romanian borders. At the same time, the paper highlights a comparative overview of key indicators for the education sector of Romania, Bulgaria and the Republic of Moldova. In order to create resilient education systems, all European countries must urgently adopt and implement sustainable standards that place digital education on top of their priorities. Therefore, regulators and policymakers must focus on their key role in translating the European Commission\’s ambitions for the digital compass 2030 in concrete measures. The research is based on both qualitative and quantitative methods that study the positive impact of ICT on education, but also the challenges that need to be repressed in an effort to reduce the digital exclusion. With the sudden conversion of didactic activities into the digital universe, the negative repercussions of e-learning affected primarily the teachers and students in rural areas with poor/ no access to Internet, but also digitally unequipped. The findings of this research show positive premises for the Romanian educational pre-university system to recover the digital gap in relation to the best education systems in Europe.

Abstract Objectives Older people are more likely to have digital exclusion, which is associated with poor health. This study investigated the relationship between digital exclusion and cognitive impairment in older adults from 23 countries across five longitudinal surveys. Design and measurements Digital exclusion is defined as self-reported non-use of the Internet. We assessed cognitive impairment on three dimensions: orientation, memory, and executive function. We used generalized estimation equations fitting binary logistic regression with exchangeable correlations to study the relationship between digital exclusion and cognitive impairment, and apply the minimum sufficiently adjusted set of causally directed acyclic graphs as the adjusted variable. Setting and participants We pooled a nationally representative sample of older adults from five longitudinal studies, including the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal study (CHARLS), the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), the Mexican Health and Ageing Study (MHAS) and the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in European (SHARE). Results We included 62,413 participants from five longitudinal studies. Digital exclusion varied by country, ranging from 21.69% (SHARE) in Denmark to 97.15% (CHARLS) in China. In the original model, digital exclusion was significantly associated with cognitive impairment in all five studies. In the adjusted model, these associations remained statistically significant: CHARLS (Odds ratio [OR] = 2.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.84–4.28, ELSA (1.92 [1.70–2.18]), HRS(2.48[2.28–2.71), MHAS (1.92 [1.74–2.12]), and SHARE (2.60 [2.34–2.88]). Conclusion Our research shows that a significant proportion of older people suffer from digital exclusion, especially in China. Digital exclusion was positively correlated with cognitive impairment. These findings suggest that digital inclusion could be an important strategy to improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of cognitive impairment in older adults.

Many of our transactions and interactions are now exclusively online; however, whilst we live in a world which is becoming ubiquitously digital, digital exclusion remains a complex societal issue. This study aimed to identify the scale and characteristics of ‘digitally excluded’ individuals in one borough in North East England and investigate factors influencing experiences of digital exclusion. A two-phase, sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was used. Phase One utilised a survey which was sent to every household in the borough (N = >98,000). The surveys (N = 9181) were analysed using exploratory univariate analysis, followed by a two-staged regression model. Of those responses, 1130 individuals (12.3%) were identified as digitally excluded. Older adults with disability, no or low-level education, and residing in specific (micro) geographical areas, were at higher risk of digital exclusion. Smaller household sizes and lower income also contributed to digitally exclusion. To further enhance inclusivity, three focus groups were conducted with groups who were identified as being at higher risk of digital exclusion (N = 10). Discussions highlighted the complexities of digital exclusion and digital use across communities and within individual circumstances. Digital exclusion is multi-factored and complex. This study provides a four-good general equilibrium framework with international trade for assessing the impact of the advancement of automation and artificial intelligence (A&AI) on the welfare of a group of agents who are excluded from both owning productive assets, such as capital and land, as well as consuming digital output (digital exclusion). We show that, depending on the magnitude of the factor intensities, the accumulation of A&AI capital may negatively affect the income of the excluded group, who provide unskilled labor, or the owners of land. In doing so, we bring out the conflict of interests that may arise between the owners of A&AI capital and other groups within society, which has implications for the pressure that exists to slow down the adoption of A&AI in an economy. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in the digitalisation of services that poses the risk of digital exclusion, especially among older adults. We examined the predictors of Internet use for services and its increase or decrease among a longitudinal population-based sample of 1426 older adults from Finland aged between 70 and 100 years, gathered in 2017 and 2020. High education and high income positively predicted the use of the Internet for services, and age, deteriorated health and deteriorated memory negatively. High age, low education and a change to living alone predicted a decrease in use. High education predicted the increased Internet use due to COVID-19. Thus, it seems that those older adults who have low education level are very old, whose health or memory has deteriorated and those who have changed to living alone are particularly in danger of digital exclusion. Much has been said about the importance of digital inclusion in reducing the digital divide and ensuring equal access and use of ICTs for all. Generally, inclusivity has a positive connotation, meaning that no one should be left behind by digitalization processes. However, the inclusion of marginalized communities into the digital system could lead to new exclusions within the new system because it amplifies the pre-existing social inequalities that these communities face, creating digital inequality. By observing the implementation of School of Community Networks in 10 Indonesian villages, this article attempts to describe those inequalities and explain how rural communities actively design a strategy to make their involvement in Indonesia’s digitalization more meaningful. The conceptual framework developed in this study adopts a “periphery-centric” approach, aligning with the user-centric approach, as it examines from the perspective of marginalized communities how they perceive, understand, and utilize digital technology by generating new forms of innovation that have real impacts on their community, such as tailored applications for public services and local internet infrastructure to reach remote areas. The approach poses the problem and strategic dimension of the issue and puts forward the ownership and locality of these innovations to overcome digital inequality. With the meaningful use of digital technology, the inclusiveness of socially less-advantaged groups into the digital system does not immediately create new inequality; rather, they make themselves the center of their respective bottom-up innovation projects.

In this thematic issue of Media and Communication titled Practices of Digital In- and Exclusion in Everyday Life, we bring together insights from around the world to offer a diverse set of perspectives on digital practices and digital literacies across the lifespan. Moreover, emphasizing the development of digital literacies as a situated social practice, this thematic issue provides insights into the social contexts through which people develop digital literacy practices, how they construct and integrate social norms around technologies, and the links between digital literacies and (digital) citizenship. As concerns about digital in- and exclusion grow, this thematic issue hosts numerous relevant studies by academics that collectively help us gain insight into the impact of digital in- and exclusion in everyday life across the lifespan, gaining insight into the role of different contextual factors, including time, place, and social, economic, and political contexts in the ways in which citizens use digital media and develop digital literacies.

Rapid advancements in technology have led to Digital Technologies (DT) playing an increasingly prominent role in the digital transformation of education, prompting national and international educational policies to prioritize the embedding of DT in teaching and learning. However, this technological progress has simultaneously exposed a digital divide, resulting in certain parents and families, who are already socially excluded, being susceptible to digital exclusion. This article focuses on the influence of this subsequent digital exclusion on Parental Involvement (PI) in home-based digital learning, a crucial factor in supporting children navigate the digital transformation of education. Through a nonsystematic narrative literature review, this article addresses two research questions: first, how digital exclusion shapes PI in children's home-based digital learning; and second, what approaches can schools employ to promote the digital inclusion of parents through shaping their self-efficacy for engaging with DT in support of PI. Emergent themes from the literature review include: the exclusionary impact of growing DT integration in education, the central role of PI in home-based digital learning, and the intertwined roles of self-efficacy and motivation in shaping PI. This article concludes with a discussion of considerations for school-based interventions, conceptualizes the link between PI and home-based digital learning, and proposes a call for future research. Many older people regularly access digital services, but many others are totally excluded. Age alone may not explain these discrepancies. As health care services offer more video consultations, we aimed to determine if living with frailty is a significant risk factor for digital exclusion in accessing video consultations, and if this changes if a person has a support network to help with access. We undertook a muticenter cross-sectional survey across South West England. Patients in primary care, hospital at home, and secondary care services were enrolled between February 21 and April 12, 2022. The primary outcome was complete digital exclusion defined as no individual access or network support access to video consultations. Secondary analysis looked at the person's digital exclusion when ignoring any network support. The association between frailty and outcomes was analyzed with logistic regression. In addition, older people's digital skills, motivation, and confidence were examined. 255 patients were included in the analysis. The median age was 63 years (interquartile range 43–77) with 148 (57%) women. Complete digital exclusion was rare (5.1%). Only 1 of 155 who were not frail (Clinical Frailty Scale 1–3) experienced complete digital exclusion compared with 12 of 99 (10.7%) who were living with frailty (Clinical Frailty Scale 4–8). There was no association between frailty and complete digital exclusion. Frailty was associated with individual digital exclusion when no network support was available to assist. When taking into account a person's support network, complete digital exclusion from video consultation was rare. When no support network was available, frailty was associated with individual digital exclusion. Health care services should ask about a person's support network to help people living with frailty access video consultations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How do people experience the platform‐mediated job search process? We explore this question based on a sample of in‐depth interviews (n = 20) with low‐qualified, unemployed Spanish job seekers. Our main finding shows that the ways they use Information and Communication Technologies negatively impact their engagement in online job search activities. Based on our findings, we develop a framework of online job search discouragement revolving around crafting online profiles, applying for jobs, reviewing application statuses and integrating the tensions these activities carry for the experience and the outcome of the platform‐mediated job search. Introduction: The transition towards remote healthcare has been rapidly accelerated in recent years due to a number of factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, however, few studies have explored service users' views of remote mental healthcare, particularly in community mental health settings. Methods: As part of a larger study concerned with the development of a remotely delivered psychosocial intervention, a survey was conducted with service users with psychosis (N = 200) from six NHS trusts across England to gain cross-sectional data about service users' opinions and attitudes towards remote interventions and explore how digital access varies across different demographic groups and geographical localities. Results: The majority of service users had access to technological devices and a quiet space to receive care. Age was a key factor in motivation to engage with remote care as older participants had less access to technological devices and the internet, and reported less confidence to learn how to use new technologies compared to younger participants. Differences in access and attitudes towards remote care were found across the different geographical localities. Over half of the participants (53.1%) preferred a hybrid model (i.e., mixture of face-to-face and remotely delivered treatment), with only 4.5% preferring remote treatment exclusively. Factors that both encourage and deter service users from engaging with remote care were identified. Conclusions: The findings of this study provide important information about the environmental and clinical barriers that prevent, or limit, the uptake of remotely delivered care for people with psychotic disorders. Although service users often have the ability and capacity to receive remote care, providers need to be cognisant of factors which may exacerbate digital exclusion and negatively impact the therapeutic alliance. The rapid digitalization of China’s healthcare system, a phenomenon that accelerated during the Covid-19 pandemic, had two negative consequences for a significant portion of elderly persons in China. The first is an unfortunate practical outcome: their exclusion from many health services such as online medical appointment platforms, e-prescription requests, obtaining e-referrals, and sharing electronic medical records. The second is an emotionally debilitating identity crisis as elderly persons’ former status as knowledgeable senior mentors was replaced with social perceptions of them as helpless and ignorant souls reliant on more youthful persons for guidance and assistance. This article adopts a grounded theory to explore the phenomenon from the perception of excluded elderly persons using participatory observation and in-depth interviews of 44 elderly clients of a rural hospital in the Shandong province in eastern China. The study shows that the current focus on direct practical aspects of digital exclusion may fail to capture the impact and ancillary consequences such as a painful loss of self-esteem by the digitally excluded. As the study illustrates, the practical aspects can all be overcome through intervention by those who aid the digitally excluded but this help may exacerbate the rarely considered ancillary harms of digital exclusion. Studies of digital exclusion will make more significant contributions to our understanding of the phenomenon if they look beyond the obvious direct consequences of digital exclusion to consider possible ancillary and flow-on effects.

Uit een rapport van de Algemene Rekenkamer blijkt dat met name ouderen moeite hebben met het gebruik van DigiD. Dit artikel behandelt daarom de vraag of het verplicht stellen van DigiD als discriminerend kan worden beschouwd. Deze vraag wordt beoordeeld aan de hand van het non-discriminatie beginsel zoals vastgelegd in de Grondwet en het Europees Verdrag voor de Rechten van de Mens. Vervolgens gaat het artikel in op de vraag welke positieve verplichtingen de Staat heeft op basis van het EVRM omtrent de toegankelijkheid van DigiD. Dit artikel stelt dat de Staat verplicht is om stappen te ondernemen om DigiD toegankelijker te maken zoals het aanbieden van de huidige Digisterker cursussen. Wel is het noodzakelijk om verder te evalueren of deze cursussen effectief zijn. Het artikel benadrukt de bredere kwestie van digitale uitsluiting en de verplichtingen waaraan de Staat is gehouden met betrekking tot de toenemende digitalisering. According to a report from the Dutch Court of Audit, it appears that primarily elderly individuals struggle with the use of DigiD. This article, therefore, addresses the question of whether mandating the use of DigiD can be considered discriminatory. This question is analysed using the non-discrimination principle as codified in the Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Subsequently, the article discusses the positive obligations that the State has under the ECHR regarding the accessibility of DigiD. This article argues that the State is obliged to take steps to make DigiD more accessible, such as offering the current Digisterker courses. However, it is necessary to further evaluate the effectiveness of these courses. The article emphasizes the broader issue of digital exclusion and the obligations to which the State is bound concerning the increasing digitalization. In countries where digital-only service delivery has become the norm, the removal of offline services and channels risks exclusion and alienation for marginalised communities, many of whom have access to the internet exclusively through a smartphone or a tablet computer. These users have been described as part of a “mobile underclass” who face challenges interacting with systems that are difficult to use on devices other than laptops or desktop computers. This article uses the theoretical lens of affordances to explore the everyday realities of digital engagement for economically and socially marginalised communities who only have internet access through a smartphone or tablet computer. This allows for an examination of the ways in which these devices might discourage or refuse certain actions such as applying for a job, as well as how they might encourage or allow other courses of action. Using data from qualitative interviews with people working at community-based organisations delivering support to digitally excluded unemployed people seeking welfare and employment support in three cities in the US and the UK, we seek to understand the role of the affordances of devices in preventing smartphone- and tablet-reliant users from accessing their basic entitlements and finding work. In doing so, we offer new perspectives on mobile-only internet access, digital divides, and digital inequalities.

This study provides a four-good general equilibrium framework with international trade for assessing the impact of the advancement of automation and artificial intelligence (A&AI) on the welfare of a group of agents who are excluded from both owning productive assets, such as capital and land, as well as consuming digital output (digital exclusion). We show that, depending on the magnitude of the factor intensities, the accumulation of A&AI capital may negatively affect the income of the excluded group, who provide unskilled labor, or the owners of land. In doing so, we bring out the conflict of interests that may arise between the owners of A&AI capital and other groups within society, which has implications for the pressure that exists to slow down the adoption of A&AI in an economy.

This article examines how inequalities in digital skills shape the outcomes of online job‐seeking processes. Building on a representative survey of Spanish job seekers, we show that people with high digital skill levels have a greater probability of securing a job online, because of their ability to create a coherent profile and make their application visible. Additionally, it is less probable that they will experience burnout during this process than job seekers with low digital skill levels. Given the concentration of digital skills amongst people with high levels of material and digital resources, we conclude that the internet enforces existing material and health inequalities.

Based on Statistics Finland's Quality of Work Life Survey 2018, this paper seeks how Finnish employees' use of digital tools differs from each other, what sociodemographic and work contextrelated factors these differences are connected to, and how differences in usage are reflected in the effects of digitalisation on employees' work. The research identified five user groups. Nearly half of the employees are classified as Skilled Users, which are typically of a young age. Challenges for other groups include deficiencies in digital skills, problems in learning to use digital tools, routine-like usage, low learning demands at work, and a high workload and learning pressure arising from intensive use of digital tools. The results support the sequential and compound digital exclusion arguments derived from previous literature, but do not fully support the stratification argument. Social inclusion is one of the important conditions for sustainable socio-economic development. However, one of the paths leading to social inclusion is to ensure a high level of accessibility of institutions for people with special needs. The study described in the present paper examined the accessibility of Polish public sector bodies based on data from government reports (comprehensive study). Accessibility is a feature that should be offered as a complementary service offered to both individuals and legal entities during epidemic emergencies and beyond. The limited accessibility of public institutions is a significant obstacle to the full well-being of the population. Indicating differences in the spatial dispersion of this phenomenon in Poland was the basis for undertaking research for this article. Three areas of accessibility were tested: physical (architectural) accessibility, digital (web) accessibility, and ICT accessibility. A synthetic measure of accessibility was constructed for the study and used to rank Polish voivodeships (provinces, NUTS 2) from highest to lowest. Clustering was used to identify similar regions. The highest- and lowest-scoring regions were the Mazowieckie voivodeship (capital city—Warsaw) and the Podkarpackie voivodeship (capital city—Rzeszów), respectively. What does the increased reliance on digital communication technologies by migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, migrant communities, governments and researchers reveal about the benefits, limits and politics of everyday mobile and immobile experiences during the pandemic? This introduction to the special issue on cultures of (im)mobile entanglements addresses this inquiry, alongside ten articles covering themes of governance and surveillance, agency and negotiated subjectivities, translocal and transnational solidarity, as well as doing research in pandemic times. Critically engaging with both mobility and immobility in the intersecting field of mobilities and migration research, the special issue centres a multidimensional and multi-scalar perspective on the deep interlinking of various modes of mobilities and stasis in and beyond spatial and temporal conditions mediated by politically and culturally structured digitalization. It endeavours to create a vantage point to critically examine the mobility–immobility continuum as informed by power relations, hierarchies and inequalities in a networked and global society. This article proposes a mobilities-informed approach to social science research on healthcare and migration. It engages with evidence gathered during the Covid-19 pandemic that suggests that when confronted with a public health emergency, health systems can be responsive to the needs of mobile populations. During the Covid-19 lockdowns, health resources shifted routine services online, spurring an acceleration of telemedicine. The roll-out of these practices intersected with the phenomenon of digital exclusion, making healthcare partly or completely out of reach for those who could not connect. We argue that these efforts could have been more successful if they grew out of a recognition of healthcare's 'sedentary bias'. National health systems are configured to serve settled populations. They are not designed for people on the move, with uncertain residential and immigration status. IntroductionThe transition towards remote healthcare has been rapidly accelerated in recent years due to a number of factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, however, few studies have explored service users' views of remote mental healthcare, particularly in community mental health settings.MethodsAs part of a larger study concerned with the development of a remotely delivered psychosocial intervention, a survey was conducted with service users with psychosis (N = 200) from six NHS trusts across England to gain cross-sectional data about service users' opinions and attitudes towards remote interventions and explore how digital access varies across different demographic groups and geographical localities.ResultsThe majority of service users had access to technological devices and a quiet space to receive care. Age was a key factor in motivation to engage with remote care as older participants had less access to technological devices and the internet, and reported less confidence to learn how to use new technologies compared to younger participants. Differences in access and attitudes towards remote care were found across the different geographical localities. Over half of the participants (53.1%) preferred a hybrid model (i.e., mixture of face-to-face and remotely delivered treatment), with only 4.5% preferring remote treatment exclusively. Factors that both encourage and deter service users from engaging with remote care were identified.ConclusionsThe findings of this study provide important information about the environmental and clinical barriers that prevent, or limit, the uptake of remotely delivered care for people with psychotic disorders. Although service users often have the ability and capacity to receive remote care, providers need to be cognisant of factors which may exacerbate digital exclusion and negatively impact the therapeutic alliance.

The pandemic has changed the way society functions, affecting the system of justice as well. The need to maintain social distance has accelerated changes in the judi-ciary. Remote hearings have emerged. The article attempts to answer the question of whether the e-hearings currently taking place are held in accordance with the principle of equality in view of the phenomenon of digital exclusion occurring in Polish society. An empirical study of remote hearings conducted by a student research group and the author’s own experience in this field make up the empiri­cal resources documenting the technical issues that occur during remote hearings and problems related to digital exclusion.

This article contains a brief description of the creation of an artificial environment, which is the outcome of the evolution of humankind’s natural environment. Its dynamic development is associated with anthropopressure. A sizeable share of scientists agree that we live in a new geological epoch called the Anthropocene (a term proposed in 2000 by Paul Crutzen, an atmospheric chemist), in which humans exert an increasingly noticeable impact on the entire planet and “reach out” into space. The modern human being no longer exists in their natural human environment, but dwells in the “technicized” one. In this article, the authors present the issues of social exclusion through the prism of newly created artificial human environments. They will look at the technicized human environment through the prism of security culture issues, of which exclusion, including digital exclusion, is one. The factor determining the functioning of ecosystems, and thus maintaining the phenomenon of life on Earth and then in Space, is the flow of energy and matter. Everything occurs in time; this very phenomenon is responsible for the aging of biocenosis, which in turn is subjected to exclusion processes in the habitat.

The aim of this paper is to examine the current state of digital inclusion activities in Lithuanian public libraries, to identify the major challenges that libraries face, and to forecast opportunities for digital inclusion growth. Theoretical conception of digital inclusion activities provided by public libraries is presented based on scientific literature findings. The empirical research findings - content analysis of public libraries textual and statistical activity reports - are also presented, revealing the situation of the implementation of digital inclusion activities in Lithuanian public libraries over the last five years and allowing to identify the main arising challenges and opportunities for digital inclusion increase.
