By using broadband dielectric spectroscopy over a wide frequency and temperature range, the effect of the chain extender and cross‐linkers on molecular dynamics of polyurethanes based on piperazine as a heterocyclic compound was assessed. Three relaxations attributed to local motions of polar side groups and small segments of the polyurethane chain (β, γ‐mode) and glass transition (α‐mode) were detected with the increase in temperature from −120 to 100 °C, along with the conductivity process at high temperatures and low frequencies. Experimental data were examined using the impedance and electric modulus for the conductivity study. Due to the presence of dipole polarization of functional groups in the hard segments, cross‐linked polyurethanes are characterized by higher dielectric constant value (≈11 at 1 kHz and 25 °C) compared to the linear ones (≈6–7 at 1 kHz and 25 °C). High conductivity was achieved for the Tween 20‐cross‐linked polyurethanes. The activation energy for the secondary γ relaxation was in the range of 34–37 kJ mol−1 for all polyurethanes, regardless of the chain extender or cross‐linker used. Piperazine‐based polyurethanes had lower activation energies for α relaxation and high conductivity compared to cyclohexane‐based polyurethanes. An environmental pollution detection mechanism is proposed from Susceptibility (χ's) and Conductivity (σ's) measurement techniques using dielectric relaxation behavior of mango tree leaves. The proposed dielectric model measures and estimates various useful dielectric relaxation parameters such as permittivity, conductivity and susceptibility of mango leaves and subsequently determines the environmental pollution effectively. Dielectric measurements were executed in mango leaves assembled from high polluted region and low polluted region under broadband microwave field at 25 °C temperature. Different dielectric characteristics of high polluted region and low polluted region suggests that dielectric relaxation study in terms of permittivity, conductivity and susceptibility parameters has potential in identifying environmental pollution due to various airborne contaminants such as Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr and Cd. IntroductionThe development of portable devices for real-time quality assessment of sugarcane is an essential necessity in the agricultural and industrial technology of sugarcane production and processing. Attributes of sugarcane such as sugar concentration and water content can be utilized for this purpose. Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been one of the most widely applied techniques for quality evaluation of sugarcane. However, NIR spectrophotometers in the full NIR wavelength range (up to 2500 nm) are expensive devices that are not readily available for portable applications. Short-wave NIR devices in the range of 1100 nm are available at lower costs but need to be evaluated for specific applications. On the other hand, dielectric spectroscopy has attracted the attention of researchers for quality evaluation of agricultural and food products. In a previous study, a parallel-plate capacitance sensor was developed and evaluated for non-destructive measurement of sugarcane Brix (total soluble solids) and Pol (sucrose concentration) as well as water content, in the frequency range of 0-10 MHz. The results showed excellent prediction models with root mean square errors smaller than 0.3 for Brix and Pol. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a dielectric sensor that can be extended for portable measurements on standing sugarcane stalk in comparison with short-wave NIR (SWNIR) spectroscopy to address how the fusion of the two methods may improve the accuracy of models for predicting sugarcane Brix.Materials and MethodsA dielectric sensor in the form of a gadget was developed with metallic electrodes to encompass the sugarcane stalk samples. The dielectric sensor was excited with a sinusoidal voltage within 0-150 MHz frequency range by a function generator, and the conductive power through the electrodes was measured using a spectrum analyzer. 105 sugarcane stalk samples were prepared from seven sugarcane varieties and scanned with the dielectric sensor. The samples were also subjected to Vis-SWNIR radiation in the wavelength range of 400-1100 nm, and the reflectance spectra were captured. Reference Brix and water content of the samples were determined using a portable refractometer and oven-drying method, respectively. Regression analyses and artificial neural networks were performed on independent and combined data from dielectric and Vis-SWNIR spectroscopy to develop prediction models for Brix and water content.Results and DiscussionPartial least squares regression on independent data sets of each instrument resulted in RMSEP = 1.14 and RMSEP = 1.88 for Brix using Vis-SWNIR and dielectric spectroscopy, respectively. Moreover, data fusion of dielectric and Vis-SWNIR spectroscopy at a low level for the prediction of Brix significantly improved the prediction accuracy to R2P = 0.94 and RMSEP= 0.74. The medium-level data fusion resulted in R2P = 0.89 and RMSEP = 0.93 for prediction of water content.ConclusionIn this study, the accuracy of using Vis-SWNIR and dielectric spectroscopy data for predicting Brix and water content in sugarcane stalk samples was evaluated. To develop the prediction models, partial least squares (PLS) regression and artificial neural network (ANN) were compared. First, the prediction models were developed based on Vis-SWNIR and dielectric spectroscopy independently. Then, the two techniques were fused and the improvement in the prediction accuracy was investigated. Fusing the two methods at an intermediate level lowered the RMSE of Brix to 0.74, showing noticeable improvement compared to previous studies. Based on the achieved results, developing a fusion probe for SWNIR and dielectric spectroscopy and designing the measuring system could be the aim of future studies for in-situ evaluation of sugarcane quality parameters. Electrochemical aptamer-based (EAB) sensors are capable of measuring the concentrations of specific molecules in vivo, in real time, and with a few-second time resolution. For their signal transduction mechanism, these sensors utilize a binding-induced conformational change in their target-recognizing, redox-reporter-modified aptamer to alter the rate of electron transfer between the reporter and the supporting electrode. While a variety of voltammetric techniques have been used to monitor this change in kinetics, they suffer from various drawbacks, including time resolution limited to several seconds and sensor-to-sensor variation that requires calibration to remove. Here, however, we show that the use of fast Fourier transform electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (FFT-EIS) to interrogate EAB sensors leads to improved (here better than 2 s) time resolution and calibration-free operation, even when such sensors are deployed in vivo. To showcase these benefits, we demonstrate the approachs ability to perform real-time molecular measurements in the veins of living rats.

Abstract In recent years, academic and industrial research has focused on using agro-waste for energy and new material production to promote sustainable development and lessen environmental issues. In this study, new nanocomposites based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-Starch using two affordable agricultural wastes, Citrus limon peels (LP) and Citrullus colocynthis (Cc) shells and seeds powders with different concentrations (2, 5, 10, and 15 wt%) as bio-fillers were prepared. The nanocomposites were characterized by Dielectric Spectroscopy, Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and water swelling ratio. The antimicrobial properties of the nanocomposites against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans were examined to investigate the possibility of using such composites in biomedical applications. Additionally, the biocompatibility of the composites on human normal fibroblast cell lines (HSF) was tested using MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay. The results demonstrate that the filler type and concentration strongly affect the film's properties. The permittivity ε′, dielectric loss ε″ and conductivity σdc increased by increasing filler content but still in the insulators range that recommend such composites to be used in the insulation purposes. Both bio fillers control the water uptake, and the samples filled with LP were more water resistant. The polyvinyl alcohol/starch incorporated with 5 wt% LP and Cc have antimicrobial effects against all the tested microorganisms. Increasing the filler content has a negative impact on cell viability.

This paper presents the results of a study of the dielectric constant of solutions of a polar liquid in a nonpolar solvent: chlorobenzene–benzene, chlorobenzene–hexane. The measurements were carried out at a wavelength λ = 1 2. 8 0 cm in the temperature range from − 8 0 ∘ C to 2 0 ∘ C. The studies were carried out using the dielectric spectroscopy method. This method allows a more detailed study of the dielectric properties of the objects of study due to the large equilibrium ("static") dielectric constant of the object. The temperature dependence of the dielectric relaxation time of molecules in the liquid and solid states of the studied solutions is determined. It has been established that with increasing concentration (0.300, 0.562, 0.794, 1.000 for a chlorobenzene–hexane solution and 0.179, 0.368, 0.567, 0.778, 1.000 for a chlorobenzene–benzene solution) of the halogen substituent, the relaxation time increases. The measurement results of dielectric constant ε ′ and absorption coefficient ε ′ ′ obtained for concentrated solutions chlorobenzene–benzene, chlorobenzene–n–hexane at wavelengths λ = 1 2 , 80 and λ = 3 , 2 6 cm at temperature 2 0 ∘ C are given in the paper. The static dielectric constant is obtained at a frequency of 1 MHz. The obtained experimental values ε ′ , ε ′ ′ and ε 0 of investigated systems in ( ε ′ , ε ′ ′ ) plane locate on the semi-circle the center of which is on ε ′ axis. In this case, the high-frequency limit value of ε ∞ dielectric coefficient exceeds the corresponding n2 refraction index square. The macroscopic and molecular relaxation times are calculated on the base of experimental data. The thermodynamic quantities characterizing the process of dielectric relaxation are calculated for solutions of chlorobenzene–benzene, chlorobenzene–hexane. It has been determined that the height of the potential barrier separating the two equilibrium positions of a polar molecule is greatest in the state of a pure polar liquid and decreases with dilution in a nonpolar solvent. Currently, new functional materials are being created with a strong emphasis on their ecological aspect. Materials and devices based on DNA biopolymers, being environmentally friendly, are therefore very interesting from the point of view of applications. In this paper, we present the results of research on complexes in the powder form based on plasmid DNA (pDNA) and three surfactants with aliphatic chains containing 16 carbon atoms (cetyltrimethylammonium chloride, benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium chloride and hexadecylpyridinium chloride). The X-ray diffraction results indicate a local hexagonal packing of DNA helices in plasmid DNA complexes, resembling the packing for corresponding complexes based on linear DNA. Based on the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results, the DNA conformation in all three complexes was determined as predominantly of A-type. The two relaxation processes revealed by dielectric spectroscopy for all the studied complexes are connected with two different contributions to total conductivity (crystallite part and grain boundaries). The crystallite part (grain interior) was interpreted as an oscillation of the polar surfactant head groups and is dependent on the conformation of the surfactant chain. The influence of the DNA type on the properties of the complexes is discussed, taking into account our previous results for complexes based on linear DNA. We showed that the type of DNA has an impact on the properties of the complexes, which has not been demonstrated so far. It was also found that the layer of pDNA–surfactant complexes can be used as a layer with variable specific electric conductivity by selecting the frequency, which is interesting from an application point of view. The dielectric properties of synclinic (ferroelectric SmC*) and anticlinic (antiferroelectric SmCA*) smectic liquid crystals composed of molecules of one chiral version (S) are presented and compared with properties of racemic mixture (R, S), showing SmC and SmCA phases. The racemic mixture completely loses its ferroelectric and antiferroelectric properties. Surprisingly, only one dielectric mode observed in the antiferroelectric SmCA* phase disappeared in the dielectric response of the racemic SmCA phase. Additionally, we observed that in the SmC phase, seen in the racemic mixture, the weak dielectric mode (named the X mode) is detected, which seems to be the continuation of the PL mode existing in the racemic SmCA. Moreover, this mode in the racemic SmC has nothing to do with the Goldstone mode, typical for the SmC* phase. This paper describes in detail the real and imaginary parts of dielectric permittivity in smectic phases for the enantiomer and racemate with and without a DC field, compares the properties of the X and PL modes, and discusses the full scheme of dielectric modes in enantiomer and racemate. This report presents the results of dielectric studies in a nitrobenzene–decane critical mixture in the homogeneous liquid, biphasic mesophase, and the solid crystal phase. It focuses on detecting critical effects in the broad surrounding of the critical consolute temperature and pre-melting and post-freezing effects in the solid crystal phase. The strong manifestation of the diameter critical anomaly in the biphasic domain and the Mossotti catastrophe type pre-melting and post-freezing effects in the solid phase are evidenced. Studies include the puzzling low-frequency (LF) domain related to translational processes. The real part of electric conductivity, in LF limit, is well portrayed by the super-Arrhenius-type equation in the homogenous liquid and solid phases. The combination of PbHfO3 and PbSnO3 in perovskite solid solutions presents valuable opportunities to study the formation mechanisms of incommensurate phases. Crystals of PbHf1-xSnxO3 with 8% Sn were grown and measured using broadband dielectric spectroscopy to investigate the nature of relaxation and the effects of phase transitions. Our findings reveal significant alterations in the dielectric response of the PbHf0.92Sn0.08O3 solid solution, shedding light on the influence of Sn doping on lattice dynamics during the phase transition. We report an experimental work on the liquid crystal dimer 1",7'-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl) heptane (CB7CB) confined to Anopore membranes. We have studied the behaviour of the dielectric relaxation modes in the isotropic (I), nematic (N) and twist-bend nematic (NTB) phases by broadband dielectric spectroscopy and compared to the results of the bulk sample. We have found that the strength of the components of the static dielectric permittivity for bulk and confined samples diminishes when cooling but, once in the NTB phase, those of the confined CB7CB tend to decrease in a slower rate compared to the ones of bulk CB7CB. Dielectric properties of a ferroelectric liquid crystal 2-methylbutyl 4-decyloxybenzylidene-4'-n-aminocinnamate (DOBAMBC) confined in untreated and treated porous Anopore membrane were investigated depending on the frequency and temperature. The confinement of a ferroelectric liquid crystal in an untreated Anopore membrane leads to the disappearance of the Goldstone mode. Moreover, despite the modification of the pore surface with various surfactants, no the Goldstone mode or other additional relaxation processes were observed. The relaxation rate of the molecular δ-process is slightly shifted for untreated and treated Anopore membrane in comparison to the bulk. Generally, the relaxation rate temperature dependence shows the Arrhenius-type course, while for lecithin-treated Anopore, it is similar to the Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann-type dependence. This study investigates the sintering optimization and characterization of (K 0.5 ,Na 0.5)NbO 3 (KNN) ceramics using spark plasma sintering (SPS) at low temperatures. The influence of sintering temperature on crystal structure, microstructure, and dielectric properties is explored. KNN ceramics were sintered as low as 400 °C and exhibit a relative permittivity (ε r) of 740 and a low dissipation factor (tan(δ)) of 0.02 at room temperature. Lignin is one of the most common biopolymers. The application of the electrophysical properties of the polymer is one of the directions of its use. The effect of impurities potassium bromide with an ionic crystal lattice on the electrophysical properties of lignin has been shown. The study of the frequency dependences of the specific electrical conductivity and the components of the complex dielectric permittivity in the frequency range from 6 × 10−2 to 6 × 107 rad s−1 was carried out. The nonadditivity of the electrophysical properties of the lignin‐potassium bromide system has been shown. It is established that the relaxation time of the π‐electrons of the aromatic rings of lignin depends on the content of potassium bromide in the mixture and varies from 1.6 × 10−7 (100% lignin) to 7.5 × 10−4 s (1% of KBr in mixture). The orientation of the positive charge of potassium atom of the KBr dipole atom to the π‐electrons of the benzene ring of lignin leads to change of high‐frequency relaxation time. This effect can be used in frequency filter to eliminate electronic polarization in the high‐frequency region. Thus, the polarization of ionic impurities has a significant effect on the dielectric properties of lignin in the region of medium and high frequencies of alternating electric field. Bitumen with 50/70 penetration was prepared and modified by doping with the unsaturated polyester resin based on isophthalic acid at 5% by weight (w/w%). The structural, mechanical, and thermal properties of bitumen and bitumen modified with unsaturated polyester resin %5 (UPR) were determined. The dielectric properties of bitumen and modified bitumen were investigated in the frequency and temperature ranges of 0.1-106 Hz and (-)40°C- 40°C, respectively. Polarization mechanisms, glass-transition temperature, and ductility of all samples were determined and compared to each other. The glass transition temperature of the modified bitumen shifts toward low temperatures in comparison to the bitumen. So, it can be suggested that the use of modified bitumen is very attractive in regions where the temperature differences are high. Also, the dielectric analysis method is an innovative alternative to determining modified bitumen's low-temperature performance. A nonterminal liquid crystal epoxy monomer is used to create an epoxy–amine network with a typical diamine 4,4′diaminodiphenylmethane. The plain matrix is compared to matrices modified with inorganic fillers: TiO2 or SiO2. Conditions of the curing reaction and glass transition temperatures in the cured products are determined through differential scanning calorimetry and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The curing process is also followed through optical and electrical observations. The dielectric response of all investigated networks reveals a segmental α-process related to structural reorientation (connected to the glass transition). In all products, a similar process associated with molecular motions of polar groups also appears. The matrix modified with TiO2 exhibits two secondary relaxation processes (β and γ). Similar processes were observed in the pure monomer. An advantage of the network with the TiO2 filler is a shorter time or lower temperature required for optimal curing conditions. The physical properties of cured matrices depend on the presence of a nematic phase in the monomer and nonterminal functional groups in the aliphatic chains. In effect, such cured matrices can have more flexibility and internal order than classical resins. Epoxy nano-magnetic composites exhibit remarkable and promising properties by synergistically combining the properties of epoxy resin and magnetic nanofillers. The current study deals with the synthesis of Fe3O4, NiFe2O4, and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and their respective nanoparticles-doped epoxy composites, as well as the structural, optical, and dielectric characterization of the resultant nano-composites. To investigate the surface morphology of the synthesized nanoparticles, field emission electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis was employed. By measuring electron diffraction spectroscopy (EDS), the presence of various chemicals was verified. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the structural details of the synthesized nanoparticles and nanoparticles-doped epoxy composites. The structural chemistry and surface functionality of the nano-epoxy composites were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The magnetic properties of the synthesized nanoparticles and nanoparticles loaded epoxy composites were also studied using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). UV–visible reflection spectroscopy was also carried out to find the optical properties of the synthesized nanoparticles, neat (undoped) epoxy, and nanoparticles-doped epoxy composites. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements of nanoparticles-doped epoxy composites were performed using an Agilent E4980A precision LCR (Inductance Capacitance Resistance) meter with an Agilent 16451B-test fixture LCR and vector network analyzer (VNA) in the frequency span of 10 kHz to 2 MHz and 200 MHz to 20 GHz, respectively. The macroscopic properties of polymer nanocomposites (PNC) rely largely on the interphase between the polymer chains and the filler particles. One significant difficulty to solve this issue is to quantitatively model the structure‐property correlations due to the interfacial region in these complex materials. While dielectric spectroscopy (DS) measurements are routinely used to characterize the effective permittivity of filled polymers, fitting standard effective medium models and mixing equations to these data remains notoriously difficult to interpret. This is due to the absence of explicit reference to internal length scales characterizing the interfaces in the PNC. As an illustrative example, a two‐level homogenization framework is proposed which enables the extraction of useful information on the impact of a thin interphase confined on a nanometer length scale based on broadband DS data. This model leads to new ways of tuning the interphase so as to optimize the material's response to electric field, a situation relevant for electromagnetic shielding. This approach provides guidance on how to observe directly and experimentally the actual properties of the interface between the phases (as opposed to model‐based inference). Aside from its secure physical foundation in the theory of effective medium, a significant advantage of this approach is that a genetic algorithm (GA) technique applied to this physics‐based model enables the uniqueness of the fit parameters to be considered, as the GA method is robust in terms of finding globally optimum solutions, therefore placing confidence in non‐universal values of the percolation exponents. Recent work in physics‐informed machine learning indicates that the effective dielectric properties of PNC with many degrees of freedom due to their complex morphology can be described by considering only a few degrees of freedom describing the interface features between the phases in these composites. In this work, the mesomorphic, electro-optic and dielectric properties have been discussed in the light of molecular structure-property correlations of two chiral multilactate liquid crystalline materials possessing the orthogonal paraelectric Smectic A* phase, tilted ferroelectric Smectic C* phase and the tilted antiferroelectric Smectic CA* phase, over a substantially broad temperature range. Interestingly, a reasonably rare re-entrant Smectic C* phase (SmCre*) has also been identified in one of the investigated materials. These materials differ in their linkage groups (keto or ether) and an additional chiral unit in the terminal chain. The phase transition temperatures and transition enthalpies were determined from Polarizing Optical Microscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) measurements. The compounds exhibit negative dielectric anisotropy (Δε) throughout the mesomorphic range (maximum −18 and −4 in SmA* for both the compounds) and moderately high values of spontaneous polarization (∼153 nC/cm2 in SmCre* phase). The temperature dependence of the response time (τ), bulk viscosity (η) and the activation energies (Ea) throughout the mesomorphic phase have been determined from the spontaneous polarization measurements. To emphasize the structure-property correlations in more detail, dielectric spectroscopy measurement has also been performed to measure the dielectric strength, dielectric loss, frequency dependent permittivities, relaxation time and relaxation frequencies. The clear evidence of the relatively rare SmCre* phase has also been confirmed from the temperature and frequency dependence of the dielectric permittivity. These results shed important light on the emergence of these materials as a smart alternative for their application in multicomponent mixtures targeted for advanced electro-optic and photonic devices.

Recent advancements in polymer science and manufacturing technologies triggered new developments of porous materials used for mitigating heat losses, such as thermal insulating polymeric foams. The major bottleneck in the optimization of these products, however, remains the absence of analytical methods able to scrutinize their large design space reasonably quickly and cost-effectively. This manuscript targets the paucity of data for polymeric foams by illustrating, at a proof-of-principle level, that several well-established analytical methods including optical microscopy, pycnometry, dielectric spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance can be exploited for an extensive, yet logistically efficient, characterization of these materials. The purpose of this study is thus introducing an experimental platform for the characterization of market foam products and for the development of new polymeric foams with pore sizes that are particularly relevant for industrial and residential thermal insulation. Since this work introduces several new methodologies, it may be used as a guide for both laboratory users and specialists in the field, who may further improve the herein proposed experimental concepts.

The article presents the results of a study of the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant ε' and the dielectric loss index ε" of the chlorobenzene-iodobenzene system at wavelengths λ = 6.32; 4.01; 3.21; 2.14; 1.18 and 0.75 V temperature range ‑40℃÷+30℃. The static dielectric constant was determined at a frequency of 7 MHz. The temperature dependence of the time of dielectric relaxation of molecules in the liquid state was determined. It was established that in the specified temperature‑frequency range the dispersion region consists of two parts. Analysis of the temperature dependence of dielectric polarization relaxation in the system chlorobenzene-iodobenzene shows that the relaxation times of the components do not depend on their short-range order. It was also discovered that the rate graph showing the dependence of the logarithm of the relaxation time on the reciprocal of the temperature logτ ~ 1/T, consists of two parts and the value of the static dielectric permeability ε∞ is non-additive. To explain these results, it is assumed that clusters are formed in this system, the same as in the pure components.

The PANI-NiO composites were synthesized by employing an in situ chemical polymerization technique, with varying weight percentages of NiO dopant (PANI-5%NiO and PANI-10%NiO). Additionally, AC conductivity, dielectric constant and dielectric loss were investigated within a frequency range from 20 Hz to 1 MHz. XRD confirmed the phase purity and high crystallinity. SEM reveals the granular shape with a porous surface. In addition, the incorporation of NiO with different concentrations influences the composite’s dielectric properties. All samples exhibited frequency-dependent dielectric properties in line with the Maxwell–Wagner model. Notably, the AC conductivity of PANI-10% NiO composite increased as the frequency increased, this behaviour was certified with Jonscher’s power law. The I–V characteristics confirm the ohmic nature of all synthesized samples. Therefore, the potential of PANI and PANI-NiO composites, as efficient dielectric materials, has been explored and can be useful for device applications in diverse fields.

Nickel copper ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) in the form Ni0.65Cu0.35Fe2O4 were synthesized by the sol–gel method while PVA-CMC blend films were manufactured by cast method. The prepared films of PVA-CMC/(Ni0.65Cu0.35Fe2O4)x, where x = 2,4,6, and 8 wt%, were characterized using X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The transmission and absorption spectra were investigated for PVA-CMC/Ni0.65Cu0.35Fe2O4 films using UV–visible spectrophotometer. The assessment of dielectric characteristics of the prepared PVA-CMC blend films was done by using broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS). XRD verified the production of face-centered cubic spinel structure of space group Fd3m with the lattice parameters a = 8.3310 Å for Ni0.65Cu0.35Fe2O4 NPs and the amorphous characteristics of blend films. Furthermore, XRD verified that Ni0.65Cu0.35Fe2O4 NPs were included in the blend matrix. The Raman spectra of the PVA-CMC blend films showed several strong characteristic scattering peaks. The optical bandgaps were evaluated via the Tauc's model. The optical bandgap decreases from 5.50 to 5.05 eV and the Urbach energy increases from 1.35 to 2.99 eV, gradually, with increasing NPs' concentrations. Moreover, the index of refraction rises from 1.776 (pure PVA-CMC) to 2.881 (PVA-CMC/8%Ni0.65Cu0.35Fe2O4). Also, it was discovered that as Ni0.65Cu0.35Fe2O4 NPs were added to the PVA-CMC blend matrix, optical conductivity increased as well. The results showed that the PVA/CMC blend films can be tailored by Ni0.65Cu0.35Fe2O4 additives which nominate it for optical devices applications. Three remarkable trends were investigated on the dielectric spectra of the investigated samples. The low frequency range shows a linear increase with decreasing frequency indicating the transport of the free charge carriers. Interfacial characteristics of nanocomposites are critical limiting factors in the design of polymer nanocomposites. The nanocomposites have complex structures and play a pivotal role in controlling functional properties. Analysis of interfacial layers in polymer nanocomposites, existing between the polymer matrix and the nanoparticles plays a major role in determining their characteristics. High-frequency analysis of electrical conductivity and dielectric properties of carbon nanofillers which are embedded in an epoxy matrix were analysed using alternating current dielectric spectra. This article provides a correlation between the electrical transport properties and dielectric behaviour of epoxy carbon nanocomposites at different temperatures are investigated with variations in frequency. Electrical transport properties of nanocomposites are primarily dictated by electron tunnelling and matrix, nanofillers conductivity. Dielectric spectroscopy in the frequency range 10 Hz–8 MHz has been performed on epoxy nanocomposites with and without hybrid carbon nanofillers at one weight percentage (2:3 ratio). Dominant dielectric relaxation mode is observed in the base composite at a low-frequency region (≥10 Hz), whereas nanocomposite with hybrid carbon nanofillers is observed to induce two dielectric relaxations in the kHz region. Increase in non-monotonic variations in dielectric spectra makes the nanocomposite suitable for high temperature low sag conductor core, aerospace and cryogenic engineering applications. Fast-growing teak trees are cultivated extensively in Indonesia to meet the growing demand for teak wood. However, it is necessary to assess the conditions of teak stands throughout their growth period. The nondestructive testing of wood utilizing dielectric spectroscopy approaches based on electrical properties is currently under development, particularly for evaluating tree stands. This study aimed to analyze the dielectric values of fast-growing teak tree stands within a frequency range of 250 kHz to 60 MHz and to understand the relationship between their physical and anatomical properties. A capacitance measurement system was employed to collect dielectric spectroscopy data directly from trees aged 4, 5, and 7 years. Simultaneously, physical and anatomical samples were obtained using a 0.5 cm diameter increment borer. The results revealed significant differences in the fiber length, lumen diameter, and wall thickness at each age. The optimal dielectric frequency for distinguishing wood properties in standing trees was identified to be within a range of 18 MHz to 23 MHz. In the linear model, a moderate relationship was observed with a correlation coefficient of (r)0.403, although the coefficient of determination (r2) was weak at 0.162 for green density. However, a robust relationship was observed in the linear model for specific gravity with r = 0.826 and r2 = 0.682. A weak but significant relationship was also identified with r = 0.2, a coefficient of determination of r2 = 0.04, and a significance level < 0.05 in the predictive model of wood anatomy properties (vessel diameter and fiber wall thickness). Models with low r2 but high significance indicate that the independent variables still noticeably contribute to explaining the dependent variable. This study is focused on investigating the role of bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) nanoparticles to improve structural, optical, electrical, and mechanical properties of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE). For this purpose, Bi2O3 nanoparticles were synthesized by using the solvothermal method and examined by transmission electron microscopes (TEM), x‐ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) light absorption methods. LDPE‐based nanocomposites were prepared by changing the nanoparticle additive ratio in the composite from 0% to 2% by weight. The composites were analyzed in the context of their FTIR spectra, atomic force microscope (AFM) images, UV–Vis light absorption spectra, stress–strain curves, and energy storage abilities. While the AFM findings indicate a smoother surface for the composites, the optical band gap analysis reveals a slightly decreased direct optical band gap energy. The analyses based on dielectric spectroscopy also highlight the LDPE/0.5% n‐Bi2O3 composite in terms of the best energy storage capability. Additionally, the highest Young's modulus, toughness, stress at break, and percentage of strain at break were also recorded for the LDPE/0.5% n‐Bi2O3 composite. In this context, the LDPE/0.5% n‐Bi2O3 composite with improved dielectric and mechanical properties can be suggested as a new promising LDPE‐based nanocomposite with better properties for industrial purposes. A new copper(II) complex with 2-amino-6-methylpyrimidin-4-(1H)-one, [Cu(C5H7N3O)4](NO3)2·H2O (Cupyrim), has been synthesized and studied by X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy. The Cu(II) is four-coordinate in a square planar geometry by four nitrogen atoms of the four organic ligands. Hirshfeld Surface Analysis was conducted to understand crystalline packing. Overall, the structure is maintained by metal coordination as well as strong and weak (C,N)–H···O hydrogen bonds and C–H...π interactions. The IR spectrum primary peaks have been assigned to the vibration modes of the ligand functional groups. An investigation of the inhibitory properties of Cupyrim toward "Cyclin-dependent Kinase 2" (CdK2) and "inducible nitric oxide synthase" (iNOS) proteins was aided by molecular docking research. According to molecular docking, Cupyrim exhibits promising inhibitory efficacy against Parkinson's, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disorders. The long-range supercritical changes of dielectric constant, resembling ones observed in the isotropic liquid phase of liquid crystalline compounds, are evidenced for linseed oil—although in the given case, the phenomenon is associated with the liquid–solid melting/freezing discontinuous phase transitions. This 'supercriticality' can be an additional factor supporting the unique pro-health properties of linseed oil. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy studies also revealed the 'glassy' changes of relaxation times, well portrayed by the 'activated and critical' equation recently introduced. In the solid phase, the premelting effect characteristic for the canonic melting/freezing discontinuous transition, i.e., without any pretransitional effect in the liquid phase, has been detected. It is interpreted within the grain model, and its parameterization is possible using the Lipovsky model and the 'reversed' Mossotti catastrophe concept. For the premelting effect in the solid state, the singular 'critical' temperature correlates with the bulk discontinuous melting and freezing temperatures. Consequently, the report shows that linseed oil, despite its 'natural and complex' origins, can be considered a unique model system for two fundamental problems: (i) pretransitional (supercritical) effects in the liquid state associated with a weakly discontinuous phase transition, and (ii) the premelting behavior in the solid side of the discontinuous melting/freezing discontinuous transition. In this paper, potassium bismuth titanate (KBT) ceramics were prepared by sol-gel technique. The structural and electrical properties were investigated at different calcination and sintering temperatures. The single phase tetragonal structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction pattern using Rietveld refinement. Raman analysis revealed changes in scattering mode of KBT ceramics with rise in processing temperature. Dielectric characterizations have been performed as a function of temperature. The ferroelectric nature of KBT ceramics is studied by automatic P-E loop tracer which reveals saturation polarization leading to a superior ferroelectric behavior. The values of d33 charge coefficients observed at different sintering temperatures were 224, 245 and 276 pC/N. The study investigated the effect of the molecular weight of three difunctional poly(propylene glycol) diacrylates on the temperature-dependent ionic conductivity of these monomers and their blends with an eutectic nematic liquid crystal mixture (E7). The results revealed two distinct regions. At low temperatures, ionic conduction can be described by the Vogel–Tamman–Fulcher (VTF) equation, while at high temperatures, the conductivity data follow the prediction of the Arrhenius model. The Arrhenius and VTF parameters and their corresponding activation energies were determined using the least squares method. In addition, a conductivity analysis based on an ionic hopping model is proposed. Estimates of ion concentrations and diffusion constants were calculated. It was found that both the ionic concentration and the diffusion constant decrease with the increase in the molecular weight of the monomers. The static dielectric permittivity decreases in the following order: TPGDA, PPGDA540, and PPGDA900. We have designed new chiral smectic mesogens with the -CH2O group near the chiral center. We synthesized two unique rod-like compounds. We determined the mesomorphic properties of these mesogens and confirmed the phase identification using dielectric spectroscopy. Depending on the length of the oligomethylene spacer (i.e., the number of methylene groups) in the achiral part of the molecules, the studied materials show different phase sequences. Moreover, the temperature ranges of the observed smectic phases are different. It can be seen that as the length of the alkyl chain increases, the liquid crystalline material shows more mesophases. Additionally, its clearing (isotropization) temperature increases. The studied compounds are compared with the structurally similar smectogens previously synthesized. The helical pitch measurements were performed using the selective reflection method. The dielectric characterization of induced antiferroelectric liquid crystal mixture W-132A was carried out at various temperatures. Dielectric strengths, relaxation frequencies and distribution parameters of a sample oriented in planar direction were evaluated from the dielectric spectra in a wide frequency spectrum of 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz. Two dielectric dispersion modes were detected in the SmA* phase and biphasic region of SmA*-SmC* phase. The aim of study is addressing the influence of nanoparticles (NPs) on the dielectric properties of polyurethane. In this research, only investigated the effect of Al2O3, MgO and ZnO NPs for concentrations up to 2 wt.% with the temperature range from 25 to 120 °C. During the preparation of nanocomposites, polymer chains bind to NPs, which then limits their mobility. This effect results in a decrease in real permittivity and the course of polarization mechanisms. An increase in permittivity over the entire temperature range only for a 2 wt.% MgO concentration was observed. The decrease in the mobility of polymer chains was confirmed by dynamic-mechanical analysis. This method also results in an increase in the glass transition temperature depending on the type and concentration of NPs. The presence of NPs and the limited mobility of the polymer chains results in a shift of the low-frequency local maximum to lower frequencies.

We have analyzed the complex permittivity of a porous (10 volume % of pores) sodium-lithium niobate ceramic with the results of computer simulation. The calculation was based on the Cole–Cole formula, which took into account the presence of various mechanisms of relaxation processes in the low-frequency (linear dispersion) and mid-frequency regions, an additional term from the Debye formula was added to take into account the mixed polarization, and a term taking into account the damping factor was added for resonant-type polarization. The simulation was carried out with and without the conductivity taken into account. To take into account the contribution of conductivity to the dynamic dielectric response, the expression σ* = (ε″ + iε′)ε0ω was used. It is shown that the linear part of the frequency dependence in the range from 50 Hz to 1 MHz is equally well described both with and without conductivity. At the same time, the behavior of the dielectric response of piezoelectric ceramics in the high-frequency region, where resonance effects are observed, and the low-frequency region, where volume-charge polarization predominates, is much better described taking into account the contribution of conductivity to the dielectric response of the system.

High-tilt angle ferroelectric liquid crystal material in surface stabilised geometry (SSFLC) is investigated for the smectic layer reorientation and its molecular dynamics by electro-optical and dielectric spectroscopy techniques. Smectic layer reorientation (5 $^o$ o to 45 $^o$ o ) is obtained by controlled cooling rate and applying electric field in the vicinity of transition temperature from chiral nematic (${N^*}$ N ∗ ) to chiral smectic C ($Sm{C^*}$ Sm C ∗ ) phase. After slow cooling down to room temperature, the stripe domain textures along the rubbing are observed with quasi-bistable states. Dielectric spectroscopy has revealed the unusual increment in the dielectric permittivity. A dielectric relaxation process at lower frequency than Goldstone mode with the increase in DC bias up to 2 $V$ V is observed in the sample cooled without any bias. This increment is found to be originated by the heliconical structure within the stripes which is seen in the optical textures recorded at the time of dielectric scan. However, this increment is not observed in the sample cooled under DC bias. Thus, there exist different phenomena in the high tilt angle SSFLC sample cooled in different conditions of DC bias; stripe domains, smectic layers reorientation, heliconical stricture and twisted structure within stripes which are significant to explore deeply in high-tilt angle ferroelectric liquid crystals. Dependences of the components of the complex dielectric permittivity and specific electrical conductivity in the frequency range 10−2–107 Hz at temperatures of 213–433 K of guaiacol, a model compound of lignin, one of the most common biopolymers, are analyzed. Three groups of relaxation oscillators are identified. Their characteristics (relaxation time and activation energy) are determined. The activation energy is shown to change depending on the aggregate state. The results of dielectric relaxation spectroscopy of the chiral liquid crystal 4′-butyl-4-(2-methylbutoxy)azoxybenzene in the crystal phase are presented. The scaling procedure showed complex molecular dynamics and allows one to decompose the observed relaxation process into two closely located relaxation processes around the short molecular axis. Temperature dependences of relaxation times characterizing flip-flop motions (rotation around the short molecular axis) and rotation around the long molecular axis are of the Arrhenius type. This article presents the synthesis and molecular dynamics investigation of three novel cyclic thioethers: 2,3-(4′-methylbenzo)-1,4,7,10-tetrathiacyclododeca-2-ene (compound 1), 2,3,14,15-bis(4′,4″(5″)-methylbenzo)-1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25-octathiacyclotetracosa-2,14-diene (compound 2), and 2,3,8,9-bis(4′,4″(5″)-methylbenzo)-1,4,7,10-tetrathiacyclododeca-2,8-diene (compound 3). The compounds exhibit relatively high glass transition temperatures (Tg), which range between 254 and 283 K. This characteristic positions them within the so-far limited category of crown-like glass-formers. We demonstrate that cyclic thioethers may span both the realms of ordinary and sizeable molecular glass-formers, each featuring distinct physical properties. Furthermore, we show that the Tg follows a sublinear power law as a function of the molar mass within this class of compounds. We also reveal multiple dielectric relaxation processes of the novel cyclic thioethers. Above the Tg, their dielectric loss spectra are dominated by a structural relaxation, which originates from the cooperative reorientation of entire molecules and exhibits an excess wing on its high-frequency slope. This feature has been attributed to the Johari–Goldstein (JG) process. Each investigated compound exhibits also at least one intramolecular secondary non-JG relaxation stemming from conformational changes. Their activation energies range from approximately 19 kJ/mol to roughly 40 kJ/mol. Finally, we analyze the high-pressure molecular dynamics of compound 1, revealing a pressure-induced increase in its Tg with a dTg/dp coefficient equal to 197 ± 8 K/GPa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The problem of field induced phase transition into the ferroelectric phase in relaxor ceramics and in particular in PMN ceramics was studied for many years, but the results are still controversial. The temperature and field dependences of PMN polycrystalline ceramics dielectric spectra have been studied. The transitions from the glass-like into the ferroelectric phase were found both in field cooling and zero field heating after field cooling regimes under the fields above 3 kV/cm. Electric field scans near the diffuse maximum of the dielectric permittivity demonstrated the shift of the loss maximum to the high frequency at increasing of applied electric field. The experimentally observed frequency-dependent sign of the C–V effect (the decrease (negative effect) or the increase (positive effect) of dielectric permittivity at increasing field) is due to spectra hardening. In contrast to single crystal, where the application of the electric field higher than 1.6 kV/cm in <111> direction induces phase transition into ferroelectric state, in polycrystalline ceramics no clear evidence of the phase transition from the paraelectric into the ferroelectric state up to 6 kV/cm neither at 242 K nor at 246 K was found. This difference between the single crystal and polycrystalline ceramics can be explained by very strong dependence of the threshold field from the field orientation at this transition. Two types of liquid crystal epoxy precursors and corresponding epoxy‐amine networks are investigated in this paper. The epoxy groups are non‐terminal in one of the monomers (NTEM) and terminal in the other one (MU22). Both monomers contain the same mesogen and exhibit liquid crystal properties. Structural differences between the carbon chains affect physical properties of the monomers and the products of curing, which involves a typical diamine—DDM (4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane). Phase transition temperatures, conditions of the curing reaction and glass transition temperatures in the cured products are determined through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical observations (POM) and broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS). The modification of the carbon chains affects the phase transition temperatures, dielectric response, and the glass transition in the cured products. The dielectric response of NTEM monomer reveals two relaxation processes (β and γ) associated with molecular motions of polar groups in the mesogen (β‐process) and in the carbon chains (γ‐process). In contrast, MU22 only displays a similar β‐process. A segmental α‐process related to structural reorientation (connected with glass transition) appears in both cured products, but in NTEM the glass transition temperature is significantly lower. The formation of the nematic to twist-bend nematic (NTB) phase has emerged as a fascinating phenomenon in the field of supramolecular chemistry, based on complex intermolecular interactions. Through a careful analysis of molecular structures and dynamics, we elucidate how these intermolecular interactions drive the complex twist-bend modulation observed in the NTB. The study employs broadband dielectric spectroscopy spanning frequencies from 10 to 2 × 109 Hz to investigate the molecular orientational dynamics within the glass-forming thioether-linked cyanobiphenyl liquid crystal dimers, namely, CBSC7SCB and CBSC7OCB. The experimental findings align with theoretical expectations, revealing the presence of two distinct relaxation processes contributing to the dielectric permittivity of these dimers. The low-frequency relaxation mode is attributed to an "end-over-end rotation" of the dipolar groups parallel to the director. The high-frequency relaxation mode is associated with precessional motions of the dipolar groups about the director. Various models are employed to describe the temperature-dependent behavior of the relaxation times for both modes. Particularly, the critical-like description via the dynamic scaling model seems to give not only quite good numerical fittings, but also provides a consistent physical picture of the orientational dynamics in accordance with findings from infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Here, as the longitudinal correlations of dipoles intensify, the m1 mode experiences a sudden upsurge in enthalpy, while the m2 mode undergoes continuous changes, displaying critical mode coupling behavior. Interestingly, both types of molecular motion exhibit a strong cooperative interplay within the lower temperature range of the NTB phase, evolving in tandem as the material's temperature approaches the glass transition point. Consequently, both molecular motions converge to determine the glassy dynamics, characterized by a shared glass transition temperature, Tg. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organik elektronik alanında üretilen yarıiletken aygıtlar yüksek elektrik alanlar altında tetiklenmektedir ve bu tür aygıtların dielektrik analizini 100-200 V'luk gerilim altında yapan cihazlar piyasada bulunmamaktadır. Bu problemi çözebilmek için yüksek gerilim altında dielektrik analiz yapabilen niteliklere sahip bir ölçüm sistemi geliştirilmiştir. Bunun için geniş bir frekans aralığında birkaç voltluk AC uygulayarak dielektrik spektroskopi analizi yapan cihaza, harici bir DC gerilim kaynağı uygun bir şekilde bağlandı. Bu iki cihazın eşzamanlı çalışması gerekmektedir fakat bu işlemin bağımsız iki cihaz için manuel olarak yapılması oldukça zordur. Bu çalışmada, geliştirdiğimiz eş zamanlı veri transfer programı kullanılarak DC gerilim kaynağı (yarıiletken malzemeler veya aygıtların Akım-Gerilim (I-V) özelliklerinin belirlenmesinde kullanılan) ve LCR Metre cihazının (Kapasitans-Gerilim (C-V), Kapasitans-Frekans (C-f), Kondüktans-Gerilim (G-V) ve Kondüktans-frekans (G-f) özelliklerinin belirlenmesinde kullanılan) eş zamanlı haberleşebilmesi için program geliştirilmiştir. Eş zamanlı veri transfer program ile elde edilen tüm veriler program arayüzünde oluşturulan Excel dosyasına aktarılarak dielektrik spektroskopik özelliklerine ait bilgiler kayıt edilmektedir. Geliştirilen programın literatürde dielektrik özellikleri daha önceden belirlenmiş malzemeler üzerine yapılan ön çalışmalarda tutarlı ve hassas veriler elde edilebildiği ve yüksek bir performansla çalıştığı gözlenmiştir.

Currently, new functional materials are being created with a strong emphasis on their ecological aspect. Materials and devices based on DNA biopolymers, being environmentally friendly, are therefore very interesting from the point of view of applications. In this paper, we present the results of research on complexes in the powder form based on plasmid DNA (pDNA) and three surfactants with aliphatic chains containing 16 carbon atoms (cetyltrimethylammonium chloride, benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium chloride and hexadecylpyridinium chloride). The X-ray diffraction results indicate a local hexagonal packing of DNA helices in plasmid DNA complexes, resembling the packing for corresponding complexes based on linear DNA. Based on the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results, the DNA conformation in all three complexes was determined as predominantly of A-type. The two relaxation processes revealed by dielectric spectroscopy for all the studied complexes are connected with two different contributions to total conductivity (crystallite part and grain boundaries). The crystallite part (grain interior) was interpreted as an oscillation of the polar surfactant head groups and is dependent on the conformation of the surfactant chain. The influence of the DNA type on the properties of the complexes is discussed, taking into account our previous results for complexes based on linear DNA. We showed that the type of DNA has an impact on the properties of the complexes, which has not been demonstrated so far. It was also found that the layer of pDNA–surfactant complexes can be used as a layer with variable specific electric conductivity by selecting the frequency, which is interesting from an application point of view.

The dielectric properties of synclinic (ferroelectric SmC*) and anticlinic (antiferroelectric SmCA*) smectic liquid crystals composed of molecules of one chiral version (S) are presented and compared with properties of racemic mixture (R, S), showing SmC and SmCA phases. The racemic mixture completely loses its ferroelectric and antiferroelectric properties. Surprisingly, only one dielectric mode observed in the antiferroelectric SmCA* phase disappeared in the dielectric response of the racemic SmCA phase. Additionally, we observed that in the SmC phase, seen in the racemic mixture, the weak dielectric mode (named the X mode) is detected, which seems to be the continuation of the PL mode existing in the racemic SmCA. Moreover, this mode in the racemic SmC has nothing to do with the Goldstone mode, typical for the SmC* phase. This paper describes in detail the real and imaginary parts of dielectric permittivity in smectic phases for the enantiomer and racemate with and without a DC field, compares the properties of the X and PL modes, and discusses the full scheme of dielectric modes in enantiomer and racemate.

This report presents the results of dielectric studies in a nitrobenzene–decane critical mixture in the homogeneous liquid, biphasic mesophase, and the solid crystal phase. It focuses on detecting critical effects in the broad surrounding of the critical consolute temperature and pre-melting and post-freezing effects in the solid crystal phase. The strong manifestation of the diameter critical anomaly in the biphasic domain and the Mossotti catastrophe type pre-melting and post-freezing effects in the solid phase are evidenced. Studies include the puzzling low-frequency (LF) domain related to translational processes. The real part of electric conductivity, in LF limit, is well portrayed by the super-Arrhenius-type equation in the homogenous liquid and solid phases. The obtained experimental evidence can be significant for the cognitive progress of the still puzzling melting/freezing canonic discontinuous transition.
