The article is devoted to the didactic potential of English-language YouTube vlogs for learning English as a foreign language by students of non-philology programs. Modern teachers of foreign languages, working in non-philological specializations, face the challenge of diversifying didactic materials. The emergence of Web 2.0, technological advancements, and the information age present a plethora of opportunities to facilitate engaging, efficient, and high-quality English language learning for both educators and students. The purpose of the article is to provide an in-depth analysis of English-language YouTube vlogs encompassing a diverse range of topics, intended for learners of various demographics, including age, gender, socioeconomic background, and English proficiency level. The study explores the potential of integrating these YouTube channels into classroom and independent learning activities for students enrolled in non-philological programs. Methodology. The research employed a multi-pronged approach. An analysis of existing literature on the research topic provided insights into the current state of mobile learning research, both domestically and internationally. A descriptive method enabled the researchers to synthesize the experiences gained during the exploratory phase. Finally, the synthesis of the gathered data facilitated the formulation and execution of the research concept. The study investigates the didactic potential of eleven YouTube channels for fostering English language learning (as a second foreign language) among students in non-philological programs. A selection of English-language vlogs has been analysed, encompassing categories such as everyday life (The Cottage Fairy), education (Lindie Botes, Ruri Ohama, RealLife English), culinary arts (Delish), popular science, (Geography Now, Smarter Every Day, Vsauce, Thomas Frank, Matt D’Avella), and culture and arts (Chris Stuckmann). These vlogs cater to a broad audience, varying in terms of age, English proficiency level, thematic focus, subscriber count, viewership statistics, and uploaded video content. The analysis revealed that the proposed materials can be seamlessly integrated into the learning process for first-year students categorized as elementary, pre-intermediate, and intermediate learners. A unifying characteristic across the examined YouTube channels is the “edutainment” concept. This approach emphasizes the achievement of educational objectives by combining a gamified learning experience with the instructional content itself. The sheer variety of English language learning vlogs empowers learners to select topics that align with their personal interests, preferred language complexity, and desired level of visual engagement. Additionally, the content offers valuable knowledge for overall development. For educators, the primary advantage of YouTube channels lies in their ability to illustrate key lesson topics with engaging video content delivered by native speakers or individuals who, like the students themselves, have learned English and can offer practical advice. Visual content ranks among the most effective pedagogical tools. Strategically chosen YouTube vlogs can significantly enhance students’ vocabulary development, facilitate the acquisition of idioms and colloquial speech patterns, improve pronunciation, strengthen linguistic competencies, and refine listening and speaking skills. Furthermore, the broad thematic range of the content contributes to an expanded worldview. Students gain exposure to diverse cultural aspects of other countries, acquire new knowledge about the world, develop effective time management skills, and glean a wealth of valuable and engaging information. Conclusion. The integration of English-language YouTube vlogs into the curriculum of non-philological programs presents a promising avenue for enriching the foreign language learning experience. The “edutainment” approach fosters a stimulating and interactive learning environment, catering to diverse learning styles and facilitating the acquisition of essential language skills and knowledge. Further research is necessary to explore the long-term efficacy of this approach and its impact on student learning outcomes.

The article is devoted to the didactic potential of mobile applications for learning English as a foreign language by students of non-philology specialities. Since mobile learning acquires complex and systemic features, it is extremely important to investigate specific means that contribute to the implementation of educational tasks and the acquisition of necessary competencies by students getting higher education. The purpose of the article is to review existing mobile applications designed for learning English as a foreign language by Ukrainian students in order to determine their didactic potential. Research methods: the analysis of sources on the topic of research made it possible to understand the state of development of the topic, the main directions of domestic and foreign research on mobile learning; descriptive provided an opportunity to generalize the experience gained during reconnaissance; synthesis of the obtained data contributed to the conclusion of the research concept and its implementation. The didactic potential of mobile applications in learning English as a foreign language is considered. A number of mobile applications offered by Google Play were analyzed, and it was determined that they can be typologically classified according to various characteristics (age of the target audience, level of foreign language proficiency, developer expertise, amount of processed material, number of downloads and the score with which users rated a certain application). The applications that can be logically and naturally introduced into the educational process of students of the 1st year of the elementary and pre-intermediate levels were analyzed. 8 applications were considered. As a result of the research, it was found out that despite the considerable diversity of the analyzed applications, their common feature is the implementation of the “edutainment” concept, in which educational goals are achieved by combining the game form and the educational component of the material under consideration. Application developers pay the most attention to grammatical material and thematic vocabulary. Learned topics can be consolidated with the help of tests, often presented in a game form. An indisputable positive point is that the studied lexemes, grammatical constructions and whole sentences are voiced by native English speakers. Based on the concept of interval repetition, the developers include tools in the applications that allow students to memorize the material as easily and naturally as possible. These can be, for example: a repetition calendar, a reminder system, associative pictures, quizzes, the ability to create word cards by your own, transcription of words in English, examples of the use of polysemantic lexemes in different meanings, accompanied by translation and voiceover in a male or female voice. Both individual and group work is provided in the applications. The function of group English learning can be easily used during classroom classes. Mobile applications are a powerful resource that a teacher can refer to when dealing with specific topics. It is convenient for the student to use mobile applications outside of class time, consolidating information learned from textbooks and expanding it with the help of material provided in the course. However, mobile applications in no way replace the main textbook, being only one of the varieties of didactic material which is modern, relevant and understandable for a modern student of higher education.

This article intends to investigate the way Rioeduca's 8th-grade Portuguese Language material in the 1st semester of 2023 commits to Law No. 10.639/2003 and to the Curricular Guidelines for Ethno-Racial Relations Education and for the Teaching of Afro-Brazilian and African History and Culture through proposed activities based on two texts regarding the Guinean writer Eliseu Banori. The investigation takes place under the linguistics politics perspective defined by Rajagopalan (2013), considering also Valentin Volóchinov's (2019) conception of language/speech and the comprehension of its role in education through Paulo Freire's point of view in Política e Educação (2022). The analysis also sets off from the work A Escola não é uma empresa by Christian Laval (2004), in order to signal the presence of the neoliberal logic in carioca education management to the development of the analyzed didactic material. SOCIAL marginality , *OLDER people , *HIGH school students , *COLLECTIVE representation , *SOCIAL role , *ELECTRONIC textbooks , *SOCIAL isolation - Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyze the (in)visibility and (under)representation of elderlies by means of texts/images published on textbooks approved by the National Plan for Didactic Book and Material (PNLD 2021) - Integrative Projects, developed to high school students, at the Languages and its Technologies area. Within the critical language studies and based on the theory of the representation of social actors (Leeuwen, 2008), fifteen textbooks were analyzed. Bearing the occurrence of the broad categories of exclusion and inclusion as well as the existence/non-existence of human figures representing elderlies, the results indicate (a) those individuals positioned aside the experiences lived by the high school students, and (b) the sustainment of the same isolation and lack of social relevance elderlies experience at a number of other social practices outside the school context. Except for the material in which elderlies are the theme of the unit, the textbooks reinforce representations of those individuals as the 'other' distant one, different, and conflictual, whose most evident social role is that of retelling narratives and reassuring the presence of the past. The International Commission for the Study and Improvement of Mathematical Education (1950) was interested in updating and developing teaching resources to address the pedagogical problems of mathematics teaching in the mid-1950s. As a result of this concern, the First International Exhibition of Mathematical Teaching Material was held in Spain in 1957, an event that had great international repercussions. This work is situated in the field of the history of mathematics education, so the research method used is historical. The aim is to study those mathematical didactic models which, due to their dynamic and multipurpose nature, stood out at the Exhibition. The results show that these materials contributed favorably to the teaching of mathematics, as they made it possible to work on a wide variety of topics and provided numerous advantages over traditional material. The use of these models meant that the mathematical notions or ideas generally arose from the action that the child carried out with the material; they also made the student the main protagonist of their learning. Since the discovery of El Primer Nueva Corónica y Buen Gobierno by Guamán Poma in 1908 and the publication of the yupana in 1912, this calculation tool has been the subject of studies about its operation, from which experiences of application have been developed in mathematics education. Within this framework, the article aims to analyze the advances in terms of research and proposals developed on the yupana in the field of mathematics education, with the purpose of making visible new application and research possibilities. The technique used is the documentary review of reports, theses and scientific articles produced in Latin America. The results show that the effects of the yupana on the learning of basic operations have been extensively studied; however, the yupana has multiple potentialities, still unknown, that must be studied, such as its effectiveness in learning decimal, fractional, radical, integer numbers, matrices, logarithms, and vectors, even more so having developed digital models. It is suggested to implement and investigate the use of the yupana with the Radicati method in order to favor the development of formal thought. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The choice of the topic of research can be attributed to the language changes and the shift in the Russian public consciousness caused by social cataclysms. Many problems need urgent solution, e.g. such as the state of the historically formed layer of precedent texts as an organic constituent of the verbal code of Russian culture and the acquisition of the units of this code by the linguistic consciousness of schoolchildren. The aim of the study is to prove the following hypothesis: should special analysis of the texts addressed to mass readers confirm the need for verbal precedent units, such units are to be used by a secondary school teacher as didactic material in the process of teaching the Russian language and literature. The scope of research includes newspaper headi- ngs and heading complexes (December 2000 – July 2021), created on the basis of ready-made and transformed precedent texts. A two-stage intertextual analysis conducted on the basis of the procedure of axiological interpretation of linguistic material and focused on the peculiarities of the structural organization of the schoolchild’s linguistic personality has shown that newspapers regularly use units of the verbal precedent code as effective tools for translating constants of the national culture and as means of organization of intracultural dialogue. The article describes the main types of precedent units that maintain a live connection with their sources: quotations from Russian fiction, names of authors and characters, literature titles, proverbs and sayings. The study has revealed the technologies of transformation of precedent texts, including the compressed ones, and has described grammatical (morphological and syntactic) and lexical substitutions. The description of the research material is is accompanied by the development of methods guidelines and learner-centred training tasks, including creative ones, for the target audience. It is emphasized that interpretation of the precedent texts is performed by the Russian language and literature teacher taking into account the speaking, cultural and communicative competences of schoolchildren The future research may include expanding the scope of individual knowledge of the precedent cultural code units and formation of the skills of using these units in oral and written speech.

In this paper, the notion of mother as a concept of contingent and changing over the time will be approached. We will analyze school textbooks as objects that promoted the circulation of senses towards motherhood in two historical moments, exploring particularities of this material's contexts of production. Convergences and specific features that have been detected in both periods of time are pointed out. This treatment will allow us to recognize continuities and ruptures in the discourses about motherhood that have been transmitted through textbooks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study is to analyse the macro and microtypographic variables that condition the editorial quality and accessibility of the linguistic content of a dictionary specialized in graphic design and typography. Using a common file with syntactic, semantic and functional parameters, we studied 20 printed and digital dictionaries published between 1979 and 2022, according to criteria marked by their exemplary value and graphic quality. A possible typology of these dictionaries is proposed, as well as guidelines for the editorial design and didactic performance of this type of publications, in their final stage of digital and printed implementation. The limitations in quantity and quality of educational and didactic material has been a cause for professional concern, which has led to the creation of alternatives to solve school attitudes towards the area and therefore the improvement of processes that eliminate these diagnosed shortcomings. In this sense, the present research had the objective of proposing the integration of AI in the development of educational and didactic material for teachers of the General Basic Secondary Education sublevel in the subject of Natural Sciences. The research had a qualitative approach and a transversal design and through an interview composed of eight open questions, information was obtained from 15 teachers who teach the subject of Natural Sciences at the General Basic Secondary Education sub-level in the Educational Unit. The results obtained allowed identifying that the educational material based on Artificial Intelligence tools is perceived as an effective tool to strengthen the learning processes of students, however its use is infrequent among elementary school teachers, who due to the lack of mastery of computer tools feel at a disadvantage compared to digital natives who have knowledge skills on these topics., Las limitaciones en cantidad y calidad del material educativo y didáctico ha sido un motivo de preocupación profesional, misma que ha conllevado a la creación de alternativas de solución de actitudes escolares hacia el área y por ende el mejoramiento de los procesos que eliminan estas carencias diagnosticadas.

- Abstract
The development of personality for a meaningful life is laid down as an educational goal by Austrian and other school curricula (cf. BMBWF 2023, APB 2021: 35). Global crises such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic further raise awareness to the importance of fostering the mental well-being needed for resilient societies (cf. Schleicher 2020: 26). Moreover, technological developments call for a focus on human values and social and emotional skills (cf. OECD 2020:6), abilities further emphasized by the language activity of “mediation” in the CEFR New Companion Volume (CoE 2020: 91). Based on the above-said, through a synthesis of multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks, empirical research, and material development, the present Master’s Thesis answers the question to what extent and how language educators should and can contribute to the personal, emotional, and life flourishing of their students. Employing triangulation and mixed methodology, the study gives insight into and allows for comparison between students’ (n=90), parents’ (n=28) and teachers’ (n=55) perceptions around learning for life, personal growth, and emotional intelligence. The thesis culminates in the presentation of piloted EFL-materials created on the basis of the research results which shall serve as ideas for direct implementation., Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 2024

This work is part of a project that accounts for the particularities of the teaching materials that recontextualize the horror of State terrorism of the last Argentine military dictatorship for a child audience. In this article, we work on two materials from the portal of the Ministry of Education : the activities proposed in 2011 and 2020 on the occasion of the commemoration of the anniversary of the coup d'état. Both have in common, in addition to the official source, the fact that they are aimed at students in the second cycle of primary school (8-9 years old). From a socio-semiotic and multimodal perspective, we approach the material in its web environment and then select a section of each one (written and video) for the analysis of the level of the statements (the configuration of the participants, the equative/attributive/evaluative constructions and their visual manifestation) and at the enunciation level (the configuration of different addressees). As the main hypothesis, we maintain that these messages avoid the enunciative building of a counter-addressee to elude the agonistic/controversial dimension that could induce responses. As a consequence of this characteristic, negative evaluations appear exclusively at the level of statements, an illusory referentiality appears disconnected from the present and, therefore, far from its direct/explicit addressees.

This article aims to investigate the teaching of chance in the context of tactile models (TM) from the perspective of the Theory of Register of Semiotic Representations. In this qualitative research, we sought to identify the different types of semiotic registers and transformations (treatment and conversion), in the solutions of the tasks of the Jefferson's Random Walks Teaching Sequence of children in early childhood education (aged 5 years). We found the presence of different registers, most frequently mother tongue and figurative language, and of conversions. Finally, the TM proved versatile, particularly in addressing the concept of chance, for the mobilization of different semiotic registers and transformations, which can encourage teachers to use this material to work probabilistic concepts in the school context. Abstract Background Viruses are the most numerous entities on Earth and have also been central to many episodes in the history of humankind. As the study of viruses progresses further and further, there are several limitations in transferring this knowledge to undergraduate and high school students. This deficiency is due to the difficulty in designing hands-on lessons that allow students to better absorb content, given limited financial resources and facilities, as well as the difficulty of exploiting viral particles, due to their small dimensions. The development of tools for teaching virology is important to encourage educators to expand on the covered topics and connect them to recent findings. Discoveries, such as giant DNA viruses, have provided an opportunity to explore aspects of viral particles in ways never seen before. Coupling these novel findings with techniques already explored by classical virology, including visualization of cytopathic effects on permissive cells, may represent a new way for teaching virology. This work aimed to develop a slide microscope kit that explores giant virus particles and some aspects of animal virus interaction with cell lines, with the goal of providing an innovative approach to virology teaching. Methods Slides were produced by staining, with crystal violet, purified giant viruses and BSC-40 and Vero cells infected with viruses of the genera Orthopoxvirus, Flavivirus, and Alphavirus. Slides with amoebae infected with different species of giant viruses and stained with hemacolor reagents were also produced. Results Staining of the giant viruses allowed better visualization of the viral particles, and this technique highlights the diversity in morphology and sizes among them. Hemacolor staining enabled visualization of viral factories in amoebae, and the staining of infected BSC-40 and Vero cell monolayers with crystal violet highlights plaque-forming units. Conclusions This kit was used in practical virology classes for the Biological Sciences course (UFMG, Brazil), and it will soon be made available at a low-cost for elementary school teachers in institutions that have microscopes. We hope this tool will foster an inspiring learning environment.

MATHEMATICS textbooks , *GEOMETRY education , *GEOMETRY , *RESEARCH teams , *TWENTY-first century - Abstract
Textbooks have been subject of national and international research and, in the Brazilian scenario, this thematic has been drawing researchers' attention since the beginning of the 21st century. Focusing on the scope of geometry, the objective of this paper is to the share results of a study about the presence of Geometry in Mathematics Textbooks, based on the map of the research conducted by the Theorem - Reflections on Geometry Mathematical Education research group, which take the mathematics textbook as subject of study. For this, the use of textbooks is contextualized and a literature review is subsequently presented, addressing studies that discuss geometry in general and in its particularities, and, lastly, we present the theoretical foundation of the investigations conducted by the group. The results of these analyses are divided into two fronts: investigations regarding geometric contents and concepts and development of other thematics associated with the presence of geometry in mathematics textbooks. Lastly, the section quilting and projecting revises the group's research fronts in a reflective way, interrelating them and relating them with other national and international fronts, in the light of a macro perspective. With this "patchwork", we hope to contribute with the discussions on mathematics textbooks and the production of knowledge, especially in the geometry scope. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The elderly population has been increased due better health conditions and quality of life. With a healthier aging, the elderly start to have a more active and participative life in society. They pursue, among other things, to acquire new knowledge and despite being a generation which access to existing technology was restricted, there is an increase in the use of digital technologies, especially in the educational field. However, with advancing age, cognitive and motor skills decrease. Given this scenario, the creation of accessible didactic materials that include the elderly population is necessary. This paper shows a framework to create inclusive digital material for elderly learning. The framework will help teachers to create digital contents that support elderly learners’ personalized educational goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ELEMENTARY school teachers , *COMPUTER science education , *TEACHER training , *ELEMENTARY education , *BASIC education , *PATTERN recognition systems , *COMPUTER science - Abstract
The design of didactic materials for Computer Science education, in parallel with the continued training of teachers, is an urgency in Brazilian Basic Education, to foster work with Computational Thinking skills in schools. Given this need, this research had the following objectives: i) design didactic materials on Unplugged Computer Science for the teaching of Computing in Basic Education (4th and 5th grade of Elementary Education), ii) to train teachers to understand basic concepts of Computational Thinking and use the developed material in Basic Education schools (public education); and iii) evaluate the developed material with the teachers of elementary school. The research involved the design and evaluation of didactic material and promoted continuous teacher training. The data collected from the teachers were categorized and coded to identify the acceptance of the Unplugged Computer Science didactic material. The main results show the didactic material as "Adequate" and "Well accepted" by teachers, and between the created topics, the most used was "Algorithms" and "Pattern Recognition". At the end of the continuing education meetings, it was also identified that 46% of the teachers demonstrated that they had successfully assimilated the studied concepts. Therefore, this research demonstrates that the didactic material had a high degree of acceptance on the part of the teachers, caused a positive impact on the students, and also evidences the need for further studies proposing and evaluating new didactic materials.
