Abstract

This article aims to present and discuss the results of a systematic literature review on workers buyout (WBO) cooperatives. More specifically the authors analyzed 44 documents, comprising 29 journal articles and 15 book chapters published up to December 2022 based on the '5Ws and 1H' (who-what-where-when-why and how) questions. The findings show that the authors of these documents mostly focused on the definition of cooperatives, and the triggers of the operation, while stages of the decision-making and implementation process are rarely investigated, in particular those following the constitution of the WBO cooperative. Avenues for further research are then presented and discussed at the level of a single cooperative, country/market and policy maker. Abstract

After decades of offshoring their manufacturing activities, an increasing number of companies are revising their location strategies and implementing reshoring decisions, including backshoring (relocation in the home country) and nearshoring (relocation in the home region) alternatives. It has been recognized that reshoring strategies are consistent with the sustainable production approach, since they allow companies to produce goods in a manner that is socially beneficial, economically viable, and environmentally less harmful over the whole life cycle of those goods. Additionally, there are early indications that reshoring can also promote and support sustainable consumption approaches. Consequently, reshoring has a wide range of impacts in both the home and the host countries, also in terms of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, this topic has received little attention in the extant reshoring literature. This paper seeks to contribute to the discussion by adopting a two‐step approach. Initially, we analyze the very few contributions available on this topic; then, we identify and discuss which of the 17 SDGs are impacted by reshoring decisions at both the home and the host country level. It emerges that reshoring decisions have several and differentiated impacts in terms of SDGs. In general, these impacts are positive for home countries and negative for host ones. For this reason, a trade‐off emerges when a single relocation decision is taken and implemented. Abstract

Many studies have focused on Intellectual Capital (IC) applied to the Third Sector in the past few years. Despite the growing interest in intellectual capital in the field, the concept remains unclear. Few scholars and practitioners deal with the subject, however, as far as we know there are no studies that show the relationship between social impact generated by non-profit organizations and IC. This is the first study to be focused on this topic. This paper aims to fill the gap in the literature and demonstrate the relation between social impact and IC in the Social Work Integration Cooperatives (SWICs). This paper contributes to the literature by theoretically arguing that the measurement of social value improves SWICs’ economic value as a consequence of improvements of relationships and trust with external stakeholders (intangible assets). To ground our theoretical hypothesis, we measure the social impact value achieved by Italian SWICs through an aggregate analysis. That is the starting point and the findings can generate further research from both non-profit practitioners and scholars through the measurement of hypotheses over time.

Abstract

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the leading cause of disability due to neurologic impairment in children and young adults. Acute and chronic cerebral lesions in response to an insult may lead to acute or delayed neuronal death, apoptotic cell death, oxidative stress, B-amyloid deposition, neuronal degeneration and gliosis. Chronic neuroinflammation has been postulated as a relevant feature of the response to TBI. This raises the possibility of ongoing brain damage in long-term survivors, such that their cognitive function and motor function continues to deteriorate for months and years after the injury. Much of the disabilities results from a spectrum of cognitive impairments that in several cases get worse in time, sometimes progressing to a severe neurocognitive disorder and even to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). TBI and Alzheimer’s disease have similarities as to protein and cellular responses and genetic influences. Severe TBI may hasten or even trigger the onset of AD even after many years, irrespective of age when the TBI occurred. In many cases the location and the extent of focal brain injuries does not fully explain the neurocognitive impairments. Altered neurochemistry and diffuse cellular injury (DAI) are important contributors to brain dysfunction, associated with poor outcome after TBI. In order to explore a putative set of criteria predicting to some extent the cognitive outcome, series of clinical and neuropsychological assessments in a sample of TBI patients were correlated with neuroimaging studies and bio-umoral profiles (every 3 months for 1 year). In particular, the plasma levels of the main antioxidant/detoxifying enzymes have been evaluated together with the levels of inflammatory markers. The neuroimaging studies were performed at 2 time points (< 2 months and > 6 months) and include: (i) MR Spectroscopy (MRS) to explore brain metabolites, particularly N-Acetyl-Aspartate (NAA), Choline (Cho), Creatine (Cr); (ii) Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) by Fractional Anisotropy (FA); (iii) Functional MRI (fMRI) by studying both resting state and activation in Vegetative (VS) or Minimally Conscious (MCS) states; (iv) Arterial Spin Labelling (ASL) that allows the absolute quantitative evaluation of the brain flow values. The patients were enrolled among the subjects admitted to an acute neurorehabilitation facility in Bologna and were aging from 18 to 65. The first assessment was conducted 30 days after the trauma and the follow up lasted at least 12 months. A cohort of 15 patients is already included in the study and 12 of them had also functional neuroimaging studies. The cognitive recovery had different patterns in time: for about ¼ of the patients an early recovery was followed by progressive worsening, while about 75% of the cases show a continuous but more or less rapid recovery of consciousness and cognitive functioning. The relationship between these 2 different trends and the biochemical and neuroimaging markers will be discussed.
