Abstract

Discrete element numerical simulations of unsteady, homogeneous shear flows have been performed by instantly applying a constant shear rate to a random, static, isotropic assembly of identical, soft, frictional spheres at either zero or finite pressure by keeping constant the solid volume fraction until the steady state is reached. If the system is slowly sheared, or, equivalently, if the particles are sufficiently rigid, the granular material exhibits either large or small fluctuations in the evolving pressure, depending whether the average number of contacts per particle (coordination number) is less or larger than a critical value. The amplitude of the pressure fluctuations is rate-dependent when the coordination number is less than the critical and rate-independent otherwise, signatures of fluid-like and solid-like behaviour, respectively. The same critical coordination number has been previously found to represent the minimum value at which rate-independent components of the stresses develop in steady, simple shearing and the jamming transition in isotropic random packings. The observed complex behaviour of the measured pressure in the fluid-solid transition clearly suggests the need for incorporating in a nontrivial way the coordination number, the solid volume fraction, the particle stiffness and the intensity of the particle agitation in constitutive models for the onset and the arrest of granular flows., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Granular Matter

Abstract

The dynamic interaction between granular flowing masses and rigid obstacles is a complex phenomenon characterised by both large displacements and high strain rates. In case the flowing mass is modelled as a continuum, its numerical simulation requires both advanced computational tools and constitutive relationships capable of predicting the mechanical behaviour of the same material under both fluid and solid regimes. In this paper, the authors employed the open‐source ANURA3D code, based on the Material Point Method (MPM), and a multi‐regime constitutive model. A series of impacts characterised by different velocities, initial void ratios, front inclinations and impacting mass lengths have been simulated. The MPM numerical results are critically compared with those obtained by using a Discrete Element Method (DEM) numerical code. The model capability of simulating material regime transitions, from fluid to solid and vice versa, is shown to be crucial for reproducing the mechanical response of the flowing mass put in evidence by DEM data. Abstract

The dynamic interaction between granular flowing masses and obstacles is a very complex phenomenon involving large displacements and high strain rates. To simulate the event in a continuum-based framework both advanced numerical tools and constitutive relationships are required. In this work, the impact of a dry granular mass against a rigid wall is numerically simulated using the open-source Material Point Method code ANURA3D, while the constitutive model proposed by Marveggio et al., 2021 is adopted for the granular mass. The model accounts for rate and grain packing dependence, which have been shown to be crucial to reproduce the propagation of compression and rarefaction waves inside the mass. The model is capable of reproducing “solidification” and “liquefaction” phenomena observed in the DEM impact tests results already available in the literature.

Abstract

The use of numerical codes for simulating the propagation phase of fast landslides requires the definition of constitutive relationships suitable for the description of the mechanical behaviour of granular soils, under both solid and fluid conditions. In this paper, the authors briefly illustrate a constitutive modelling approach interpreting the material as a bi-phasic continuum, according to which the solid phase may behave like a solid, under quasi-static conditions, and a fluid, under collisional/dynamic conditions. The model presented seems to satisfactorily reproduce a series of results obtained by using a discrete element numerical code on mono and polydisperse granular specimens. The constitutive model has been implemented in a Material Point Method code to solve boundary value problems, in which strain rate large values are expected to influence the material response.
