Bajo la validez de ciertas teorías BSM, como los modelos de partículas tipo-axión (Axion-Like Particles), durante una colisión protón-protón en el LHC del CERN, se podría producir una resonancia pseudoescalar X de baja masa, acoplándose principalmente con partículas de la tercera generación del SM. Estas resonancias podrían ser detectadas en ATLAS, siendo producidas en asociación a un par de quarks top y anti-top, y decayendo a un par de leptones tau, de los que se considerará el canal de decaimiento hadrónico (tt̄(X → ττ)). En el rango de masas de 20 a 60GeV, el decaimiento X → ττ presenta dificultades técnicas, al encontrarse los leptones muy próximos entre si, por lo que no pueden resolverse individualmente en el detector. Los más grandes desafíos de esta búsqueda experimental radican en la reconstrucción y caracterización de estos decaimientos boosteados de la partícula X para su identificación, y en la estimación de los fondos de eventos del SM que puedan contaminar la señal de Nueva Física. Con este fin, en este trabajo se definen regiones de control y validación para el fondo dominante tt̄, estimando los factores de normalización mediante una comparación de las simulaciones MC y datos del año 2017 obtenidos por ATLAS., Under the validity of certain BSM theories, like models involving Axion-Like particles, during a proton-proton collision at the LHC, a low-mass pseudoscalar resonance X can be produced, coupling mainly with third-generation SM particles. These resonances could be detected by ATLAS, produced in association with a pair of top and anti-top quarks, and decaying to a pair of tau leptons, considered to decay hadronically (tt̄(X → ττ)). The X → ττ decay channel presents technical difficulties in the range of masses between 20 and 60 GeV since the individual tau leptons can’t be resolved in the detector due to a low angular separation. The main challenges in this experimental search are the reconstruction and characterization of the X particle’s boosted decays for their proper identification, and the estimation of the SM background events that could contaminate the New Physics signal. La búsqueda de nueva física más allá del Modelo Estándar es el principal objetivo de la física experimental de altas energías desde el descubrimiento del bosón de Higgs por ATLAS y CMS en 2012. Motivaciones relacionadas con mediciones astrofísicas que predicen la existencia de materia y energía oscura, o el supuesto de una gran unificación de las fuerzas elementales de la naturaleza, entre tantas otras, justifican dicha búsqueda. La Supersimetría (SUSY) es la teoría mejor fundamentada desde el punto de vista teórico y provee modelos con estados finales atractivos para su búsqueda en colisionadores como el LHC. En esta tesis se presenta un estudio para la búsqueda de nueva física en el marco de la teoría SUSY en estados finales con fotones aislados, jets y alto momento transversal faltante en colisiones protón-protón a una energía de centro de masa de 13 TeV. La búsqueda se realiza utilizando el conjunto de datos colectados con el detector ATLAS en el LHC entre 2015 y 2018, correspondiente a una luminosidad integrada de 139 f b −1 . Para un correcto análisis de los datos es imprescindible estudiar las eficiencias de selección de objetos a medida que se adquieren datos. En este contexto, esta tesis presenta un estudio detallado del cálculo de las eficiencias del trigger de fotones y de multijets. Se presenta además un estudio de factibilidad para una búsqueda en el marco de un modelo de SUSY más complejo, conocido como Stealth SUSY, con fotones, múltiples jets y bajo momento transverso faltante en el estado final., The search for new physics beyond the Standard Model is the main objective of experimental high energy physics since the discovery of the Higgs boson by ATLAS and CMS in 2012. Motivations related to astrophysical measurements that predict the existence of matter and dark energy, or the assumption of a great unification of the elemental forces of nature, among many others, justify this search. Supersym- metry (SUSY) is the theory best motivated from the theoretical point of view and provides models with attractive final states for their search in colliders such as the LHC. In this thesis a study for the search of new physics within the framework of the SUSY theory in final states with isolated photons, jets and high missing transverse momen- tum in proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 13 TeV, is presented. The search is performed using the dataset collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC between 2015 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 f b −1 . For a correct analysis of the data it is essential to study the efficiencies of the object selection as data is acquired. In this context, this thesis presents a detailed study of the calculation of photon and multijet trigger efficiencies. Entre os principais objetivos dos experimentos de física de partículas pode-se mencionar a validação de modelos teóricos e a proposição de novas teorias relacionadas aos componentes fundamentais da matéria, e suas formas de interação. Devido à sua estrutura finamente segmentada, e à natureza dos fenômenos estudados, é produzido um volume de informação considerável durante as colisões, que ocorrem a uma taxa de 40 MHz produzindo no ATLAS até 68 TB/s de informação. Assim, torna-se proibitivo o armazenamento de toda a informação produzida, para posterior processamento. Dessa forma, é necessário um sistema de seleção online (Trigger), que realize a separação dos eventos que contenham informação a respeito da física de interesse do ruído de fundo (eventos não relevantes) produzido. Neste contexto, o discriminador online Neural Ringer utiliza redes neurais do tipo perceptron de múltiplas camadas (MLP) para a separação da informação de interesse (prováveis assinaturas de elétrons) do ruído de fundo (composto em sua maioria por jatos hadrônicos). Como entradas para as redes classificadoras, o Neural Ringer utiliza a informação do perfil de deposição de energia do evento registrado pelo detector. Entretanto, para a obtenção do conjunto de redes neurais que compõem o Neural Ringer, é necessário realizar um número elevado de inicializações do processo de treinamento, o que demanda muito tempo de processamento. Neste trabalho são investigadas modificações no sistema de detecção online de elétrons do ATLAS (Neural Ringer) visando diminuir o tempo de treinamento de redes neurais artificiais e mantendo a eficiência de discriminação da física de interesse. Para isso serão utilizadas técnicas computacionalmente eficientes para treinamento dos classificadores, como as Máquinas de Aprendizado Extremo (Extreme Learning Machine - ELM) e a as Redes com estados de Eco (Echo State Network - ESN). Utilizando duas bases de dados e duas técnicas de reamostragem utilizadas pela Colaboração ATLAS os classificadores foram treinados e avaliados por meio da curva ROC e índice SP na determinação da rede mais eficiente para posterior análise do tempo de treinamento. Ainda foi realizada uma análise estatística para comparação das técnicas propostas em relação ao discriminador padrão. Os resultados mostraram que as técnicas propostas produzem desempenho de classificação equivalente ao classificador em uso, e em tempo de treinamento inferior, sugerindo que as técnicas podem vir a ser utilizadas como alternativas ao classificador utilizado no detector ATLAS. The ATLAS is the largest detector of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the largest particle accelerator ever built and in operation since 2008. Its structure is highly segmented, having 100,000,000 sensors arranged in a cylindrical shape to capture proton-proton collisions occurring in the LHC. Among the main objectives of the experiments in particle physics are the validation of theoretical models and the proposition of new theories related to the fundamental components of matter and their forms of interaction. Due to its finely segmented structure and the nature of the studied phenomena, a considerable amount of information is produced during the collisions, occurring at a rate of 40 MHz producing in the ATLAS up to 68 TB/s of information. Thus, it becomes prohibitive the storage of all the information produced, for further processing. Therefore, an online selection system (Trigger) is required, which performs the separation of events that contain information about the background physics (non-relevant events) produced. In this context, the online discriminator Neural Ringer uses multilayer perceptron neural networks (MLP) to separate information of interest (likely electron signatures) from background noise (composed mainly of hadronic jets). As inputs to the classifier networks, the Neural Ringer uses the event energy deposition profile information recorded by the detector. However, to obtain the set of neural networks that make up the Neural Ringer, it is necessary to perform a large number of initializations of the training process, which requires processing time. In this work, modifications will be investigated in the ATLAS (Neural Ringer) electron detection system in order to reduce the training time of artificial neural networks and to maintain the discriminant efficiency of the physics of interest. To do this, we will use computationally efficient techniques to train classifiers, such as Extreme Learning Machines (ELM) and Echo State Networks (ESN). Using two databases and two resampling techniques used by the ATLAS Collaboration, the classifiers were trained and evaluated through the ROC curve and SP index in determining the most efficient network for later analysis of training time. A statistical analysis was also performed to compare the proposed techniques in relation to the standard discriminator. The results showed that the proposed techniques produce classification performance equivalent to the classifier in use, and at lower training time, suggesting that the techniques can be used as alternatives to the classifier used in the ATLAS detector.

After the long shut-down, the LHC Run2 has started with new running conditions with respect to Run1: in particular the centre of mass energy has reached 13 TeV and the bunchspacing is now 25 ns. In order to cope with these changes, the ATLAS luminosity monitor LUCID and its electronics have been completely rebuilt. This note describes the new detector and electronics, the new luminosity algorithms and the new calibration systems, with a brief review of the first results about the stability of the measurement and evaluation of systematic uncertainties for the 2015 data-taking.

El Modelo Estándar de la física de partículas ha demostrado ser una de las teorías más precisas en la actualidad, sin embargo, existen fenómenos en la naturaleza que no son posibles explicarlos con ella. Una de las extensiones posibles con mayor motivación teórica de física más allá del Modelo Estándar es supersimetría (SUSY), que resuelve, entre otras cosas, el problema de jerarquía. Para este trabajo se consideró SUSY en el contexto de General Gauge Mediated SUSY breaking model (GGM), en el que, SUSY está rota a una escala de energía mucho menor que la escala de Planck, resultando en el Gravitino como la partícula supersimétrica estable más liviana (LSP). La segunda partícula supersimétrica más liviana, denominada NLSP por sus siglas en inglés, define la fenomenología de estos modelos. En esta tesis se describe la búsqueda de SUSY en el marco de modelos GGM co-NLSP en colisiones protón-protón a una energía de centro de masa de 8 TeV y 13 TeV en el LHC , en procesos con un fotón, un leptón (electrón o muón) y energía faltante en el estado final. Se trata de modelos donde las masas de la NLSP, chargino y neutralino tipo-wino están prácticamente degeneradas. El análisis fue realizado utilizando todos los datos recolectados por el detector ATLAS durante el año 2012, 2015 y 2016 que corresponden a una luminosidad total integrada de 20.3 1/fb para los de 2012 y 36.1 1/fb para los colectados en 2015 y 2016., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

El Gran Colisionador de Hadrones (LHC) perteneciente al CERN, es el acelerador de hadrones más grande del mundo, diseñado para colisionar protones a una energía de centro de masa de \sqrt{s} = 14 TeV. El mismo consta de una serie de detectores cuyos diseños están orientados a distintos objetivos. Uno de ellos es ATLAS que tiene como uno de sus propósitos generales la búsqueda de nueva física. Supersimetría (SUSY) es una extensión del Modelo Estándar (SM) que postula la existencia de nuevas partículas relacionadas con las ya conocidas del SM, asociando a los fermiones (bosones) del mismo con nuevos bosones (fermiones). De esta forma se resuelven una serie de cuestiones que dejaban al SM incompleto, como por ejemplo los problemas de jerarquía y naturalidad, la ausencia de candidatos a materia oscura y la exclusión de la fuerza gravitatoria en la teoría. SUSY es una simetría rota y existen varios mecanismos propuesto de ruptura. Uno de ellos es el “Generalised Model of Gauge-Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking” (GGMSB) cuya ruptura está en la escala del TeV, pudiendo ser así detectable por el LHC. La estrategia general de búsqueda de SUSY consiste en encontrar en alguna región de señal, un exceso en el número de eventos con respecto al número predicho por el SM. Para ello es necesario tener un buen conocimiento de los procesos del SM que aportan eventos a esa región de señal. Estos procesos se denominan “fondos” y uno de ellos es el proveniente de la reconstrucción errónea de electrones como fotones en el detector ATLAS. La técnica para la estimación de ese fondo consiste básicamente en el conteo de eventos asociados al decaimiento del bosón Z → ee, donde uno de esos electrones puede ser erróneamente reconstruido como un fotón. De esta forma se calcula un factor de identificación errónea (“Fake Factor”) asociado a la proporción de electrones reconstruidos. Los resultados obtenidos en esta Tesis (compatibles con predicciones en base a datos y técnicas anteriores) fueron validados en nuevas regiones diseñadas específicamente para corroborar las contribuciones de este fondo. Los factores obtenidos en este trabajo son utilizados actualmente por la colaboración ATLAS para la estimación del fondo antes mencionado en búsquedas de SUSY con fotones en estado final., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

The dijet production cross section for jets containing a b-hadron (b-jets) has been measured in proton– proton collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7TeV, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb−1. The cross section is measured for events with two identified b-jets with a transverse momentum pT > 20GeV and a minimum separation in the η–φ plane of R = 0.4. At least one of the jets in the event is required to have pT > 270GeV. The cross section is measured differentially as a function of dijet invariant mass, dijet transverse momentum, boost of the dijet system, and the rapidity difference, azimuthal angle and angular distance between the b-jets. The results are compared to different predictions of leading order and next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics matrix elements supplemented with models for parton-showers and hadronization., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Supersimetría (SUSY) es una de las teorías con mayor motivación teórica para física más allá del Modelo Estándar, proporcionando un marco para la unificación de la física de partículas y la gravedad, gobernada por la escala de energía de Planck. Dado que ninguna de las partículas supersimétricas predichas ha sido observada, SUSY debe ser una simetría rota en la naturaleza. La fenomenología de SUSY está ampliamente determinada por el mecanismo de rompimiento de la supersimetría. Los modelos GGM en los que el rompimiento está mediado por los campos de gauge usuales del Modelo Estándar brindan un escenario propicio para la búsqueda de SUSY en el LHC, con espectros de masas y decaimientos característicos. En esta tesis se presenta la primera búsqueda de nueva física en un estado final con un fotón energético, jets y gran cantidad de energía faltante en colisiones protón-protón a una energía de centro de masa de 8 TeV en el LHC. El análisis fue realizado utilizando todos los datos recolectados por el detector ATLAS durante el año 2012, que corresponden a una luminosidad total integrada de 20.3 1/fb. No se observó un exceso de eventos por sobre las predicciones del Modelo Estándar, por lo cual se estableció un límite superior a 95% CL al número de eventos provenientes de nueva física para este estado final. Adicionalmente, los resultados fueron interpretados en el contexto de un modelo de GGM SUSY considerando un neutralino NLSP mezcla bino-higgsino, excluyendo la producción de gluinos con masas de hasta 1.25 TeV, resultando en los límites más estrictos al presente., Supersymmetry (SUSY) is one of the most motivated theories for physics beyond the Standard Model, giving a framework to the unification of the particle physics and gravity, which is governed by the Plank energy scale. As none of the predicted supersymmetric particles has been discovered, SUSY must be a broken symmetry in nature. SUSY phenomenology is hardly determined by the SUSY breaking mechanism. GGM models in which the SUSY breaking is mediated by the usual gauge fields of the Standard Model provide a suitable scenario for SUSY searches at the LHC, with very characteristic mass spectrum and decays. This thesis presents the first search of new physics with one energetic photon, jets and high missing energy in the final state in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of mass energy of 8 TeV. The analysis was realized with all the data collected by the ATLAS detector during 2012, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. No excess over the Standard Model predictions was observed, so an upper limit in the number of new physics events was established at 95 % CL for this final state. Additionally, the results were also interpreted in the context of a GGM SUSY model considering a bino-higgsino neutralino NLSP admixture, excluding the production of gluinos with masses up to 1.25 TeV, giving the most strict limits at the moment., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Nas últimas décadas, a sinergia entre engenharia e física, nas áreas de aplicação da física moderna, tem sido crescente. Para o programa de física do ATLAS, no CERN, por exemplo, a identificação de elétrons é de fundamental importância, sendo uma de-manda responsável por diversos estudos em engenharia. Esse trabalho se desenvolve nesse viés, tendo como base a técnica de verossimilhança utilizada pela colaboração ATLAS na identificação offline de elétrons relevantes, considerados sinal, em meio a diversas partículas, consideradas ruído de fundo. Atualmente, a verossimilhança tem sido aplicada pela colaboração de forma simplificada, supondo independência entre as variáveis discriminantes fornecidas pelo detector ATLAS. Essa consideração, possibi-lita que a formulação matemática da probabilidade conjunta seja feita pela utilização do produtório das densidades marginais das variáveis discriminantes. Entretanto, a simplificação promove um erro na reconstrução da probabilidade conjunta, visto que, algumas variáveis discriminantes possuem um certo grau de dependência entre si. Esse cenário, nos abre a possibilidade de melhora do método, a partir de técnicas capazes de mitigar a dependência entre tais varáveis. A principal contribuição desse trabalho se dá na implementação de um algoritmo baseado na técnica não-paramétrica para estima-ção de densidade multivariada conhecida como MKDE (do inglês, Multivariate Kernel Density Estimation), com o objetivo de minimizar o erro de estimação da probabilidade conjunta, que ocorre devido à consideração de independência acima citada. Dentro da realidade comparativa deste trabalho, foi possível observar a melhora na estimação da probabilidade conjunta via MKDE e a propagação desta melhora na identificação de elétrons. The electron identification is of fundamental importance to the ATLAS physics pro-gram, at CERN. This Master's Thesis planned to study and to reproduce one of the main offline algorithms, based on nonparametric maximum likelihood estimation, ap-plied to identify electron/positron particles using the ATLAS Detector to then propose additional processing techniques that could improve its performance. The ATLAS Col-laboration simplifies the likelihood method by considering independence between the discriminant variables. This approach opens possibilities for improving the method by means of applying techniques capable of mitigating the variables dependence. Our main contribution lies in the implementation of an algorithm based on Multivariate Kernel Density Estimation (MKDE). This algorithm should be able to decrease the error caused by the variables dependence, as mentioned above, improving the ATLAS electron identification performance. The impact of this new proposal was also compa-red to the most used algorithms developed by ATLAS group, known as Egamma and Likelihood.

Una serie de novedosos modelos de nueva física postulan la existencia de dimensiones espaciales extras para dar solución al problema de jerarquía, referido a la gran disparidad existente entre la escala electrodébil y la escala de Planck. Esta Tesis utiliza los datos colectados por el detector ATLAS del Gran Colisionador de Hadrones para realizar una búsqueda de dimensiones extras en el estado final de dos fotones. Se utilizaron datos de las colisiones protón-protón a √ s = 7 TeV correspondientes a una luminosidad integrada de 2.12 fb−1. La distribución de masa invariante de dos fotones en el estado final presenta un buen acuerdo con las predicciones del Modelo Estándar. En el contexto del modelo de N. Arkani-Hamed, S. Dimopoulos y G. Dvali, los resultados proveen límites inferiores sobre la escala efectiva de Planck a 95% CL entre 2.27 y 3.53 TeV, dependiendo del número de dimensiones extras y el formalismo considerado. En el contexto del modelo de L. Randall y R. Sundrum, se determinaron límites inferiores sobre la masa más liviana del gravitón a 95% CL con resultados entre 0.79 y 1.85 TeV, para valores del acoplamiento k/MPt entre 0.01 y 0.1. Combinando estos resultados con los provenientes de los canales leptónicos e+ e− y µ+ µ−, previamente publicados por ATLAS, el límite inferior toma el valor de 0.8 (1.95) TeV para un valor de k/MPt=0.01 (0.1)., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

By using the ATLAS detector, observations have been made of a centrality-dependent dijet asymmetry in the collisions of lead ions at the Large Hadron Collider. In a sample of lead-lead events with a pernucleon center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV, selected with a minimum bias trigger, jets are reconstructed in fine-grained, longitudinally segmented electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters. The transverse energies of dijets in opposite hemispheres are observed to become systematically more unbalanced with increasing event centrality leading to a large number of events which contain highly asymmetric dijets. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a two-ring-superconducting-hadron accelerator and collider installed in the 27 km tunnel constructed by the Centre Europ eenne pour la Recherche Nucl eaire (CERN) for the Large Electron Positron collider (LEP) machine [1]. The A Toroidal Lhc ApparatuS (ATLAS) experiment uses a complex trigger strategy to be able to reduce the Event Filter rate output, down to a level that allows the storage and processing of triggered data. These concepts are described in the ATLAS Computing Model which embraces the Grid paradigm. The output coming from the Event Filter consists of four main streams: physical stream, express stream, calibration stream, and diagnostic stream. The calibration stream is transferred to the Tier-0 facilities that will provide the prompt reconstruction of this stream with a latency of 8 hours, producing calibration constants of su cient quality to allow a rst-pass processing. The Inner Detector (ID) community developed and tested an independent alignment stream, which selects tracks at the Level-2 (L2) after the reconstruction. The stream is composed of raw data in byte-stream format, contained in ReadOut Bu ers (ROBs) with hit information of the selected tracks, and contains only information of the relevant parts of the detector. It will be used to derive and update a set of calibration and alignment constants. The Inner Detector alignment contents will be promptly computed using a dedicated byte stream whose algorithms were developed and are presented within this study. Processing is done using specialized algorithms running in the Athena framework and the alignment constants will be stored and distributed using the COOL conditions database infrastructure. This work is addressing in particular the alignment requirements, the needs for track and hit selection, and the performance issues. According to the Standard Model (SM), the top quark Branching Ratios (BR) through Flavour Changing Neutral Currents (FCNC), $t \to qX,X=\gamma, Z$ or q are extremely small (10$^{-14}$ to 10$^{-12}$). Nevertheless there are several extensions to the SM which predict higher values for these FCNC BR (up to ~10$^{-4}$). This work is dedicated to the study of the ATLAS experience sensitivity for the FCNC top quark decays in ttbar events produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Probabilistic analyses were developed for high (L=10 fb$^{-1}$ and L=100 fb$^{-1}$) and low (L=1 fb$^{-1}$) luminosities, using Monte Carlo simulations. Fast and full ATLAS simulations were used. Several sources of systematic uncertainties were studied. With an integrated luminosity of 10 fb$^{-1}$, ATLAS will be able to observe FCNC top quark decays, with a 5sigma significance, if these decays have a BR larger than 9.4x10^${-5}$, 4.4x10$^{-4}$ or 4.3x10$^{-3}$, for the $t \to q\gamma, t \to qZ and t \to qg$ decay channels, respectively. If no signal evidence is found, the following 95% confidence level limits on the BR can be derived: 4.1x10$^{-5}$, 3.1x10$^{-4}$ and 1.3x10$^{-3}$, for the same channels. The expected limits for low luminosity are compatible with these, if the differences in luminosities, in lepton and photon identification efficiencies, in trigger efficiencies and in background cross sections are taken into account. These results were compared with previous analyses from ATLAS, as well from CMS (another general purpose detector at LHC). For the $t \to q\gamma$ channel, the obtained results for the BR are better than the previous ones from ATLAS, and those from CMS. For the $t \to qZ$ channel, the results are similar. The expected limits for these two channels are about two orders of magnitude better than the present experimental limits. For the $t \to qg$ the expected result is about one order of magnitude better then the current limit from Tevatron, although the results from the single top production analyses could be even better. Even if the SM predicts much lower BR than the expected limits, some extensions of the SM can be probed, rejecting them or constraining their parameters space.
