Finnish cities are undergoing rapid transformations due to technological advancements and shifts in demographic structures. The increasing diversity necessitates a more inclusive approach to digital governance in response to widening societal disparities. This paper proposes a model for developing citizen-friendly services by integrating empathic design with design management, employing benchmarking and systematic literature review methods. Initially, a preliminary benchmarking of five major Finnish cities—Helsinki, Espoo, Turku, Tampere, and Oulu—was conducted to map the prevailing challenges in the strategic application of design principles. A systematic literature review then follows to identify specific challenges in city governance through the lens of design management. Consequently, this study proposes a model that elucidates the connections between the identified challenges and various levels of design management. The proposed model facilitates the strategic decision-making process by incorporating empathic considerations and ensuring the effective allocation of resources to address multiple levels of managerial challenges. Built environment and infrastructure designs are produced in complex information systems. Managing this complexity poses a significant challenge; data scarcity and bias are substantial obstacles. This paper addresses the gap in data availability by mining building information modeling (BIM) meta-databases. Two case study databases are studied and assessed through various analytical tools, including network modeling, statistics, entropy, fast Fourier transform (fft), and information constraint (IC). Through analytical and empirical investigation, insights into the morphology, characteristics, failures, causes, and trajectories of design information systems are derived, showcasing that complex systems can be retroactively deciphered and predicted to a certain extent. This study acknowledges design errors as social and psychological phenomena and proposes behavioristic and systemic remedies for addressing design faults. Applying design quality-control management tools, risk assessment, and responsibility allocation becomes feasible, enabling proactive and real-time corrective actions. This research contributes a theoretical framework and practical methodologies as well as the application of data analysis tools to design quality control management, addressing both the information gap and the complexity challenge. Design coordination in hydropower projects is both complex and challenging due to their scale, environmental impact, or technological complexity. The current understanding of how to effectively enhance it is limited and often contradictory. This research explores five key conditions impacting design coordination: technical conditions, digital design capabilities, designers' dynamic capabilities, partnering, and incentives. Utilizing fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) on 28 large-scale hydropower project cases, this study identifies five distinct configurations that facilitate high-level design coordination, which can be grouped into three types: capability-centric, stakeholder-centric, and a hybrid approach combining both capability and stakeholder focus. The findings reveal that both high- and low-level design coordination outcomes can be achieved through various configurations of these conditions. This study advances the understanding of design coordination by adopting a configurational perspective and contributes to the literature on the adoption of emerging technologies and practices. Practical Applications: Design coordination in hydropower projects is complex but critical because it can influence the project's feasibility, environmental harmony, and social acceptance. This research explores five key conditions impacting design coordination among project stakeholders: technical conditions, digital design capabilities, designers' dynamic capabilities, partnering, and incentives. The results of this study offer significant managerial suggestions to project managers in the hydropower industry. First, enhancing design coordination by investing in improving technical conditions may be valuable but is only useful when combined with strengthening designers' digital design capabilities and other strategies, such as developing partnering relationships with stakeholders to engage them in coordination. Even then, the effect may be marginal. This finding suggests that to fulfill the desired effectiveness when using new technologies, managers of design companies should pay attention to hiring capable personnel and improving organizational capabilities for developing partnerships with stakeholders. Secondly, achieving high-performance design coordination seems easier than avoiding low-performance design coordination because applying a few high-level strategies may result in high-level design coordination. The finding implies that even strengthening designers' dynamic capabilities can achieve high-level design coordination given underperforming technical conditions. One of the initial problems faced by young interior designers is to make a creative pattern to draw potential consumers’ attention. Their belief in the creative pattern should fit consumers’ expectations. This study scrutinized the relationship between young interior designers and potential consumers about both expectation, designers’ capital, and designers’ strategy to cap-ture the pattern in the design market. To this end, young interior designers (n=100) and potential design consumers (n=100) were recruited as respon-dents. Multiple linear regression and ordinal logisic regression were applied. The data analysis result demonstrated young designers’ marketing patterns to draw potential consumers’ attention. A correlation was found between young designers and design consumers. The expectation, capital, and strategy of designers were found to be interrelated by 48.1%, while those of consumers were interrelated by 28.6%. The research variables, which are designer capital, designer strategy and the two respondent groups, were found to have an impact on the expectation by 94.5%. This study concludes that young designers have a marketing pattern to draw poten-tial consumers’ attention. It showed a relationship between designers’ and consumers’ expectations, designers’ capital or information received by consumers, and designers’ strategy. This study may serve as a refer-ence for young designers’ behaviors when entering the market design.

The Integrated Design Process is one of the most recommended methods to deliver Zero-Energy Buildings as it brings together all the stakeholders in the early moments of design, allowing performance optimisation and synergies among the different approaches and expertise. The practice of this design process is complex and difficult because it aims to integrate evolving decisions by all parties. It has been widely studied from the perspective of the process itself and its efficacy. However, the human side or how to manage the collaboration of the different stakeholders in the design development for a Zero Energy Building is unknown. To address this research gap this study is focused on the synergies among the consultants and the purpose behind this kind of building. Through the analysis of the design process and eight interviews with the main stakeholders of a Zero Energy Building at the National University of Singapore, three human factors are identified as critical for the success of an Integrated Design Process: client leadership, acting as the engine of the project; trust among the team, acting as the glue during the process, and focus on the goals that sustains the effort and allows the continuity in time. Although the results are limited to a case study, they can serve as a guide for clients and consultants to implement optimised Integrated Design Processes for future Zero Energy Buildings. Globally, design management and its related concepts have attracted much attention from experts and scholars in design, sociology, economics and other related industries, and the design policy research involved in design management is gradually becoming one of the core elements for countries to promote the development of the fashion industry, condense the characteristics of the regional fashion culture and build fashion centers. Looking back at history, economic development, capital accumulation and national development are all closely linked to the prosperity of the textile industry. The prosperity of the textile industry has undoubtedly provided a solid foundation for the rise of the fashion industry. Although there are differences in the development paths and methods of the fashion industry in various countries, the active intervention and guidance of the fashion industry at the national level is a common theme, which is manifested in design management and policies. Take Britain as an example, the country has introduced a series of policies driven by official design organizations, which include strategic planning at the national level as well as policy measures proposed by industry associations, all of which have helped the fashion industry to become an important pillar of its economic development. As modern industry attaches great importance to design innovation and economic development, governments are gradually realizing the industrial benefits and economic value brought by design, and are committed to promoting research on the formulation and implementation of design industry policies. However, the formulation and improvement of design policy do not happen overnight, but through years or even decades of gradual evolution and optimization, which is is particularly obvious specially in fashion design, a unique economic field and cross-disciplines. In this paper, through combing the development of design policy and fashion industry in Britain, interpreting typical cases from a historical perspective, analyzing the logic between design policy and fashion industry, and summing up the historical experience and value of the contribution of design policy to the development of the regional fashion industry, the paper aims to provide a clear picture of the development of the fashion industry in Britain. Firstly, the design policy was placed in the context of design management for the corresponding analysis of design policy and the fashion industry in Britain. Secondly, the British fashion process was divided into four phases: germination, development, transformation, and renewal, so as to compare and analyze how the driving factors behind the fashion phenomena presented by the British fashion industry under the guidance of design policy and its leadership interacted with each other and formed synergy. Finally, the paper summarized the three stages of transformation and development of the British fashion industry and analyze the impact of design policy on each stage of transformation. It is hoped that the reconfirmation of historical samples will inspire design management research in the process of China’s fashion development, promote the integration and development of China’s design policy and fashion industry, and provide a model for the transformation of China’s fashion brands and the construction of the fashion consumer market. Design is recognized as a critical driving force of economic growth in China, shaped by its distinct political, economic and cultural history. However, documentation on Chinese design policies remains scarce. In this conversation, Dr Sylvia Xihui Liu, a distinguished researcher in design policy and design management from China, shares her invaluable experiences in influencing the development of China's national design innovation policies. She also discusses the tangible impact these policies have on design practitioners within the country and offers her perspectives on the differences between the United Kingdom and China in crafting creative policies. Design is a specific form of complex innovation that affects all areas of an organization's management. However, the essence of design is vague, and it is difficult to fully grasp the concept of design. Therefore, it is difficult to find criteria for determining its value. The problem of establishing a causal relationship between design value and user experience is addressed in this paper. The relationship between these two variables affects the importance of design in organizations and can be used to quantify the value of design. Indeed, based on the results of existing research, it is known that this term has many meanings, and it is necessary to reject the possibility of its total quantification. Much of the related research has focused on the area of user experience and customer value, while other related research has focused on design value, which cannot be measured directly but rather, for example, through system dynamic modelling. This approach, i.e., the use of a system dynamic model to determine the value of design, is still missing in the research literature.The main research method for determining the value of design is the experimental method, supported by other research methods: modelling and structured questioning. Inputs to the model, which represent the opinions of the company's managers on the design, are obtained through a board game that provides an attractive and easy-to-understand user interface for the research participants. The value of design is determined by using a sample case study that contains key variables according to the company's business model. The value of the design is calculated based on the indicator "design cost-effectiveness" over six years of the start-up company's business. The indicator is experimentally verified in a model with an identical structure and different scenarios concerning the involvement of design change in the economic development of the firm. This paper aims to use the gamified DVCG model as an innovative concept in business management through a case study. The contribution of the paper to science and practice is to provide experimentally validated evidence to help identify the areas where design investments are needed to make the most sense for the economics and management of the organization.

Construction Design Management (DM) involves the coordination of design processes and activities to ensure quality project design, yet it involves many challenges. This study reports on a collaborative Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project with a Case Study Organization (CSO) that tackled several issues faced by construction design managers. Employing a design science research methodology (DSRM), qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with purposefully identified design managers uncovered real-world concerns around design co-ordination and performance monitoring. To address these concerns, a web-based design management prototype dashboard was developed using typical project data to aid in the management of design coordination, task prioritization, and reporting functionalities. The web-based Design Management prototype dashboard enhances design management productivity in construction firms by monitoring design production, assessing designer performance trends, and focusing on Technical Queries (TQs) and Requests for Information (RFIs). Digitalizing selected design management processes improves efficiency and productivity. The visual reporting of the dashboard enables design production monitoring at project and portfolio levels, assesses trends in designer performance, and maintains focus on TQs and RFIs. Demonstrating how web-based Design Management dashboards can enhance productivity, this study emphasizes practical solutions derived from employing a design science research methodology. The development and application of the web-based dashboard contribute to the growing evidence that employing design science research methodology in construction can yield tangible solutions to address real-world construction concerns. Parametric Design can be considered as an approach that parameterizes Design knowledge, thus allowing for its manipulation as input for the generation of solution alternatives. This study discusses whether the Grasshopper 3D, parametric design software, can be characterized as a model for capturing and representing Design knowledge (Design Rationale) when compared with traditional gIBIS and QOC systems in terms of their syntax, representativeness of Design parameters, and information flow. The analysis reveals similarities in syntax, but highlights Grasshopper 3D in the final stages of ideation and initial stages of technical specification, in which it offers complementary potential to traditional systems. Sustainability is recognised as a complex issue with it comprising of three themes, namely social, environmental, and economic impact. The role of professional designers is becoming trans‐disciplinary, with employers expecting designers to be equipped with the necessary skills to implement sustainability within their design process. Environmental sustainability has been and has continued to be an important theme within design and design management literature, with a focus on how to effectively implement this throughout the design industry. It is currently unclear how designers are managing environmental sustainability throughout their design process. To investigate this gap further a detailed methodology was employed, including a review of previous academic literature, an investigation into the design processes of sustainability‐design specialists, and a holistic review of the current status of environmental sustainability within the design industry. The study has enabled an evaluation of the current status of environmental sustainability implementation as well as the management methods used by those in industry to aid designers and their process. From data analysis, a framework has been developed to aid designers in the implementation of environmental sustainability during their design process. In recent years, the entire fashion industry has been striving to develop in a more sustainable way. As the starting and crucial link of fashion product development, the process of design plays a decisive role in creating a healthier fashion supply chain. In this sense, the current work discusses from the design point of view the status quo and future direction of the development of fashion sustainability. The paper first describes the concept, the historical development, and the multi-angled significance of sustainable fashion design. Then, the current development of sustainable fashion design is studied by investigating the various ideas and approaches that are popular nowadays for the designing of eco-friendly and waste-free clothing. On this basis, the current work digs into the existing problems and finally points out the future prospects for the development of sustainable fashion design by putting forward some innovative and promising ideas and instructive "future-making" techniques.
