Recent advancements in 3D data capture have enabled the real-time acquisition of high-resolution 3D range data, even in mobile devices. However, this type of high bit-depth data remains difficult to efficiently transmit over a standard broadband connection. The most successful techniques for tackling this data problem thus far have been image-based depth encoding schemes that leverage modern image and video codecs. To our knowledge, no published work has directly optimized the end-to-end losses of a depth encoding scheme sandwiched around a lossy image compression codec. We present N-DEPTH, a compression-resilient neural depth encoding method that leverages deep learning to efficiently encode depth maps into 24-bit RGB representations that minimize end-to-end depth reconstruction errors when compressed with JPEG. N-DEPTH's learned robustness to lossy compression expands to video codecs as well. Compared to an existing state-of-the-art encoding method, N-DEPTH achieves smaller file sizes and lower errors across a large range of compression qualities, in both image (JPEG) and video (H.264) formats. For example, reconstructions from N-DEPTH encodings stored with JPEG had dramatically lower error while still offering 29.8%-smaller file sizes. When H.264 video was used to target a 10 Mbps bit rate, N-DEPTH reconstructions had 85.1%-lower root mean square error (RMSE) and 15.3%-lower mean absolute error (MAE). Overall, our method offers an efficient and robust solution for emerging 3D streaming and 3D telepresence applications, enabling high-quality 3D depth data storage and transmission. One trend in current whole-body PET scanner development is to increase the axial field-of-view. But the degradation of the spatial resolution of PET scanners due to depth of interaction uncertainty increases as the axial field-of-view increases. PET detector with depth encoding capability has become essential. In this work, a depth encoding PET detector using the side readout of duallayer semi-continuous crystals with the SiPM array was proposed. The upper layer of the detector is a fast 1×4 LYSO array, and the lower layer is a 1×4 YSO array. The size of each crystal in each layer is 3 mm×6 mm×18 mm. The crystals of each layer were separated by an ESR reflection film, and the crystal array of the upper and lower layers were coupled by optical glue. The experimental results show that the detector can effectively identify the two layer and all crystals can be clearly resolved from the flood histograms. For the upper and lower crystal array, the average energy resolution is 11.9% and 11.7%, respectively. The detector has a good position resolution of 0.27 mm (FWHM) for the crystals. The crystal resolution map can clearly distinguish all crystal units and provide continuous depth information in the z direction. The signal maximum and sum ratio method was used to analyze the y direction height position, and the upper LYSO crystal layer is better than the lower YSO crystal layer. The experimental results reveal that the novel PET detector proposed here can be used to achieve high-performance whole-body and panoramic PET scanners.

Recent world events have caused a dramatic rise in the use of video conferencing solutions such as Zoom and FaceTime. Although 3D capture and display technologies are becoming common in consumer products (e.g., Apple iPhone TrueDepth sensors, Microsoft Kinect devices, and Meta Quest VR headsets), 3D telecommunication has not yet seen any appreciable adoption. Researchers have made great progress in developing advanced 3D telepresence systems, but often with burdensome hardware and network requirements. In this work, we present HoloKinect, an open-source, user-friendly, and GPU-accelerated platform for enabling live, two-way 3D video conferencing on commodity hardware and a standard broadband internet connection. A Microsoft Azure Kinect serves as the capture device and a Looking Glass Portrait multiscopically displays the final reconstructed 3D mesh for a hologram-like effect. HoloKinect packs color and depth information into a single video stream, leveraging multiwavelength depth (MWD) encoding to store depth maps in standard RGB video frames. The video stream is compressed with highly optimized and hardware-accelerated video codecs such as H.264. A search of the depth and video encoding parameter space was performed to analyze the quantitative and qualitative losses resulting from HoloKinect's lossy compression scheme. Visual results were acceptable at all tested bitrates (3–30 Mbps), while the best results were achieved with higher video bitrates and full 4:4:4 chroma sampling. Modern 3D-range scanning systems have become much faster than real-time and are able to capture data with incredible precision. However, increasingly fast acquisition speeds and high fidelity data come with increased storage and transmission costs. In order to enable applications that wish to utilize these technologies, efforts must be made to compress the raw data into more manageable formats. One common approach to compressing 3D-range geometry is to encode its depth information within the three color channels of a traditional 24-bit RGB image. To further reduce file sizes, this paper evaluates two novel approaches to the recovery of floating-point 3D range data from only a single-channel 8-bit image using machine learning techniques. Specifically, the recovery of depth data from a single channel is enabled through the use of both semantic image segmentation and end-to-end depth synthesis. These two distinct approaches show that machine learning techniques can be utilized to enable significant file size reduction while maintaining reconstruction accuracy suitable for many applications. For example, a complex set of depth data encoded using the proposed method, stored in the JPG 20 format, and recovered using semantic segmentation techniques was able to achieve an average RMS reconstruction accuracy of 99.18% while achieving an average compression ratio of 106:1 when compared to the raw floating-point data. When end-to-end synthesis techniques were applied to the same encoded dataset, an average reconstruction accuracy of 99.59% was experimentally demonstrated for the same average compression ratio. Classification of indoor environments is a challenging problem. The availability of low-cost depth sensors has opened up a new research area of using depth information in addition to color image (RGB) data for scene understanding. Transfer learning of deep convolutional networks with pairs of RGB and depth (RGB-D) images has to deal with integrating these two modalities. Single-channel depth images are often converted to three-channel images by extracting horizontal disparity, height above ground, and the angle of the pixel’s local surface normal (HHA) to apply transfer learning using networks trained on the Places365 dataset. The high computational cost of HHA encoding can be a major disadvantage for the real-time prediction of scenes, although this may be less important during the training phase. We propose a new, computationally efficient encoding method that can be integrated with any convolutional neural network. We show that our encoding approach performs equally well or better in a multimodal transfer learning setup for scene classification. Our encoding is implemented in a customized and pretrained VGG16 Net. We address the class imbalance problem seen in the image dataset using a method based on the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) at the feature level. With appropriate image augmentation and fine-tuning, our network achieves scene classification accuracy comparable to that of other state-of-the-art architectures.

2D/3D image fusion applications are widely used in endovascular interventions. Complaints from interventionists about existing state-of-art visualization software are usually related to the strong compromise between 2D and 3D visibility or the lack of depth perception. In this paper, we investigate several concepts enabling improvement of current image fusion visualization found in the operating room. First, a contour enhanced visualization is used to circumvent hidden information in the X-ray image. Second, an occlusion and depth color-coding scheme is considered to improve depth perception. To validate our visualization technique both phantom and clinical data are considered. An evaluation is performed in the form of a questionnaire which included 24 participants: ten clinicians and fourteen non-clinicians. Results indicate that the occlusion correction method provides 100% correctness when determining the true position of an aneurysm in X-ray. Further, when integrating an RGB or RB color-depth encoding in the image fusion both perception and intuitiveness are improved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One common approach to the compression of 3D range data is to encode it within the three color channels of a traditional 24-bit RGB image. This paper presents a novel method for the modification and compression of 3D range data such that the original depth information can be stored within, and recovered from, only two channels of a traditional 2D RGB image. Storage within a traditional image format allows for further compression to be realized via lossless or lossy image compression techniques. For example, when JPEG 80 is used to store the encoded output image, this method achieves an 18.2% reduction in file size when compared to a similar three-channel, image-base compression method, with only a corresponding 0.17% reduction in global reconstruction accuracy. This paper presents a novel method for reducing the depth range of a 3D geometry such that it can be stored within a 2D image using lower encoding frequencies (or a fewer number of encoding periods).
