The field of dental prosthetics has undergone significant evolution due to advances in materials, technology, and patient-specific customization. Practical interferences, such as technological limitations, material constraints, and clinical challenges, continue to influence the trajectory of this field. This paper aims to analyze these interferences, highlighting their impact on the design, production, and clinical application of dental prostheses. By reviewing existing literature and case studies, this work identifies key obstacles and proposes strategies for overcoming them. The findings underscore the need for interdisciplinary collaboration, continuous research, and technological investment to address these interferences effectively.

Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence and impact that types of prosthetic materials can have on levels of bone resorption around dental implants. Materials and methods: This retrospective study was conducted between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2023 at a private dental clinic in the city of Sibiu, Romania. The realization of the study involved the detailed analysis of the medical records of the patients who came to the clinic during this period of time for complex implanto-prosthetic rehabilitation. The results of this study were obtained by the analysis of a total number of 268 implants. Results: The type of prosthetic material used in complex implanto-prosthetic restorations significantly influences the long-term evolution of this therapy. Zirconium-based restorations were found to report lower levels of bone resorption around dental implants in all planes analyzed. Conclusions Zirconium-based restorations in implant-prosthetic treatment should be chosen whenever the clinical and radiological situation allows it, as they bring a series of important advantages and can contribute to the long-term success of implant-prosthetic rehabilitation.

This study aims to evaluate patient satisfaction and quality of life outcomes following dental implant placement. Materials and Methods: A total of 150 patients who received dental implants were included in this study. Patient satisfaction was assessed using a validated questionnaire covering various aspects such as esthetics, function, and comfort. Quality of life was evaluated using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). Data were collected at baseline (prior to implant placement) and at a 6-month follow-up. Results: Of the 150 patients, 135 (90%) completed the 6-month follow-up. The overall patient satisfaction score improved significantly from a baseline mean of 3.5 (SD = 1.2) to 8.2 (SD = 1.1) at the 6-month follow-up (P < 0.001). Similarly, the OHIP-14 score showed a significant reduction, indicating improved quality of life, from a baseline mean of 32.0 (SD = 5.3) to 14.5 (SD = 4.2) at the 6-month follow-up (P < 0.001). Subscales for pain, psychological discomfort, and social disability showed marked improvements. Conclusion: Dental implant placement leads to a significant increase in patient satisfaction and quality of life. These findings underscore the importance of dental implants as a viable option for the restoration of missing teeth and the enhancement of overall oral health and well-being.

Aim: This scoping review aimed to compile and evaluate clinical trials investigating digital applications in prosthetic diagnostics and treatment planning by assessing their clinical relevance and future potential. Methods: Following the PCC‐framework for scoping reviews and combining the source of analysis (Population/P: "prosthodontics"), the technique of interest (Concept/C: "digital application") and the field of interest (Context/C: "diagnostics"), a three‐pronged search strategy was applied in the database PubMed and Web of Science. Clinical trials (≥10 study participants, English/German) were considered until 2023‐03‐09. Reporting adhered to the PRISMA‐ScR statement. Results: The search identified 520 titles, of which 18 full‐texts met the inclusion criteria for data extraction. The trials involved a total of 14,457 study participants and were mapped for prosthetic subdisciplines: fixed (n = 9; 50%) and removable (n = 4; 22%) prosthodontics, reconstructive dentistry in general (n = 3; 17%), and temporo‐mandibular joint disorders (n = 2; 11%). Data merging of medical format files, as DICOM+STL, was the dominant digital application (n = 7; 39%); and virtual treatment simulation using digital smile design or digital wax‐up represented the most frequent prosthetic diagnostics (n = 6; 33%). Conclusion: This scoping review identified a relatively low number of clinical trials. The future potential of digital diagnostics appears to be mostly related to the subdiscipline of fixed prosthodontics, especially regarding virtual treatment simulation for communication with the patient and among dental professionals. Artificial intelligence emerged as a key technology in many of the identified studies. Aim of the study: To evaluate the efficacy of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) in non-invasively monitoring temperature variations during ceramic sintering for dental prosthetics, emphasizing the importance of precise temperature control for optimal material properties and structural integrity. Materials and Methods: The study utilized OCT to examine 17 metal-ceramic restorations at various sintering temperatures (standard, 80°C below, and 50°C above the standard). The method involved generating 61 cross-sectional images per prosthesis to identify defects and structural changes. Results: OCT revealed significant insights into the impact of temperature deviations on ceramic microstructure, including uniform grain sizes at standard temperatures and areas of reduced retention at elevated temperatures, highlighting the technology’s potential in quality control. Conclusions: OCT offers a rapid, accurate, and non-destructive means to assess sintering temperatures and detect defects in dental ceramics, facilitating improvements in dental prosthetics’ fabrication process. The study advocates for OCT’s integration into routine dental laboratory practices to enhance prosthesis quality and reliability.

Objective: The study has evaluated the accuracy (trueness and precision) of seven extraoral scan-ners when scanning two different types of jaws: simplified jaw with sharp edges and abutments and realistic jaw with natural teeth. The accuracies of extraoral scanners were compared, and their compliance with the required clinical accuracy levels was discussed.Material and methods: Ten scans were made with each scanner for both models. The comparison of the selected dental scanners relied on reference scans made for both models. Trueness, precision, and the distribution and value of laboratory scan points’ deviations were assessed for each scanner across the models. Results: The trueness for the model of the simplified jaw with abutments ranged from 16.15 to 49.78 μm. The measured precision values for the same model ranged from 4.33 to 29.49 μm. For the model of the realistic jaw with natural teeth, the trueness results ranged from 11.32 to 24.55 μm, while the obtained precision values were between 2.29 and 18.06 μm. Conclusion: The revealed dissimilarities in the accuracies of scanners and their ranking when scanning different models lead to the conclusion that model selection is critical for the research design. All the scanners met the clinical accuracy requirements and are suitable for use in laboratories for scanning jaws with abutments and jaws with natural teeth. However, the accuracy values reported by the manufacturers of scanners are better than those obtained in this study. Furthermore, the results suggested that blue light scanners outperform white light and laser scanners.

Literary data testify to the significant prevalence of the dental implantation method to solve the problem of permanent prosthetics in partial and complete anodontia. However, a significant array of information needs systematization and generalization, taking into account the specifics of providing dental care by dental institutions in different regions. The authors conducted a retrospective study of the main statistical regularities based on the results of 32 cases of treatment of secondary anodontia by replacing bounded and finite distally unlimited defects of the lower and upper jaws with the support of dental endosseous implants as exemplified by outpatient care at a private dental office in the city of Poltava (Ukraine). Dental implantation and subsequent prosthetics were performed at one medical institution, by one doctor in cooperation with one dental laboratory in the city of Poltava (Ukraine). The term of retrospective observation was 5 years. The condition for inclusion in the study was the manufacture of a non-removable orthopedic appliance with the non-removable fixation on dismountable and full-body intraosseous screw dental implants. In all cases, metal and ceramic structures with cement fixation on intraosseous dental implants of the Implife Classic, Implife Solo (Inpride company, Ukraine) Vitaplant VK Vitaplant V2Kn (Vitadent company, Ukraine) implant systems were manufactured. Observation of the treatment outcomes was carried out an average of 32 months after the fixation of 69 orthopedic appliances. It turned out that the protocol of permanent prosthetics to replace partial defects of the dentition was implemented mainly in the middle-aged group. Periodic outpatient monitoring of orthopedic appliances with cement fixation on intraosseous implants takes place within the period from 6 to 60 months. The average observation period was 32.8 months. Characteristic statistical regularities related to the selection of individuals and the most common types of implants for solving standard clinical tasks were determined. The average number of implants per clinical case was 4 supports, and the average diameter and length of the integrated implants were 3.5 and 11 mm, respectively.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE Describe the trends in the production of dental prosthetics by the Unified Health System (SUS) in older people aged 60 years or older in Brazil and country regions from 2010 to 2019 and the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the expected production for 2020 and 2021. METHODS A time series study using secondary data from the SUS database (Datasus-Tabnet) and the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - IBGE) from 2010 to 2021. Age-standardized rates were calculated for Brazil and regions for each year analyzed. Generalized linear regressions estimated production trends using the Prais-Winstein estimation method. RESULTS A growth trend occurred in the standardized production rate of complete dentures and other prosthetics per 100,000 inhabitants in Brazil and all country regions. The increase in the production of complete dentures was higher in the Northeast region (50.3%/year) and lower in the North region (19.1%/year). Trends in the production of other prosthetics were higher in the Southeast region (120.7%/year) and lower in the North region (24.5%/year). The output of prosthetics for both groups decreased in the pandemic years. In 2020, the relative difference ranged from -36.4% (North) to -61.7% (Northeast) for producing complete dentures and from -17.9% (North) to -68.4% (Northeast) for other prosthetics. In 2021, standardized rates and total production increased compared to the previous year. However, compared with expected values, the differences were close to those in 2020. CONCLUSION Policies aimed at producing complete dentures and other prosthetics have been increasing. However, production remains far from the population’s needs, and there is no equity in providing services. The covid-19 pandemic negatively impacted the production of dental prosthetics by SUS.

The production of fixed prosthetic restorations requires strength identification in terms of cognition and the targeted clinical applications. The aim of the study is to evaluate the static strength in axial tensile and compression tests of titanium and cobalt alloys for the supporting foundations of crowns and bridges produced using Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies: Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) and milling. The test materials are samples of Ti6Al4V and CoCrMo alloys obtained using digital technologies and, for comparison purposes, CoCrMo samples from traditional casting. For the studied biomedical alloys, R0.05, Rp0.2, Rm and Ru were determined in the tensile tests, and in the compression tests R0.01, Rp0.2 and the stress σ at the adopted deformation threshold. Tensile and compression tests of titanium and cobalt alloys indicate differences in strength parameters resulting from the technology applied. The manufacturing of the structures by DMLS provides the highest stress values that condition elastic deformations for cobalt biomaterials: R0.05 = 1180 MPa, R0.01 = 1124 MPa and for titanium biomaterials: R0.05 = 984 MPa, R0.01 = 958 MPa. The high resistance to deformation of CoCrMo and Ti6Al4V from DMLS may be beneficial for fixed prosthetic structures subjected to biomechanical stresses in the stomatognathic system and the impact of these structures on the dento-alveolar complex. The advantages of the restoration of chewing teeth with ceramic inlays and composite materials are determined by the favorable physical and mechanical properties of modern ceramics with zero water absorption, optimal coefficient of thermal expansion, low thermal conductivity, biological compatibility and chemical stability in the oral cavity.. It is ceramics that is considered the most chemically inert material, and even the components - wear products that appear during abrasion do not cause allergic or toxic reactions in the oral cavity or inflammation of the marginal gums. The aim of the study was to assess the state of the periodontal tissues of teeth restored with different types of inlay core and, thus, to predict the development of pathological processes in the tissues surrounding the restored root. The conducted clinical and laboratory studies showed the significant advantages of the method of manufacturing a hip insert made of ceramics developed by us. Thus, according to the results of a comparative study of the dynamics of the level of glycogen in the periodontal tissues of the roots of teeth restored under aesthetic crowns with the use of root tabs, it is obvious that the use of ceramic tabs during prosthetics with ceramic crowns does not cause inflammatory processes in the periodontal tissues, but after traumatic exposure by preparation and preparation of the tooth before prosthetics, recover quite quickly to the level of the indicator at the healthy gingival margin.

Background: There is an increase in the population of older adults in the world, which makes this population group a main target for public health, and in general for health sciences. Purpose: Characterize the oral conditions of the elderly in a geriatric care site in Cali, Colombia, year 2019. Methods: A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study of the oral conditions of 97 patients was carried out. residents in a geriatric care setting. Sociodemographic information, presence of edentulous areas, occlusal pairs, use of dental prostheses, soft tissue injuries, root caries and oral hygiene were obtained from each older adult. Prior to the evaluation, a calibration of the observers was carried out, evaluated with Cohen's kappa index, a descriptive analysis and significant differences between some variables were carried out, through the Kruskal Wallis test. Results: The institutionalized population presented an average of 8 occlusal pairs, 70 % of the participants had no occlusal pairs, a diminished masticatory function, 39 % a non-functional dentition and around 25 % total absence of functionality, all the people presented edentulous areas, with a high prevalence of complete edentulism. Conclusions: Understanding oral health different from public health and being able to generate interventions aimed at Primary Health Care is key to improving the oral conditions of institutionalized older adults. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the wear of diamond-coated dental burs applied on specimens made of four different materials used in dental prosthetics. Cutting was performed using a dental air turbine handpiece. Identical coarse-grit diamond burs were mounted on the handpiece and subjected to a 1.5 N load. Dental burs were divided into four groups according to the type of material on which the cutting was performed (leucite glass ceramic, zirconium oxide, CoCrMo alloy and polymethylmethacrylate). The wear of the dental burs was determined as the amount of their weight loss during different time intervals. After each time interval, all the burs were cleaned, weighed, and analysed by an SEM. The greatest bur weight loss was measured in the group of dental burs used to perform cutting on the ZrO2 specimen, while the smallest weight loss was measured in the group used on the polymethylmethacrylate specimen. Accidental ingestion of a foreign body is a fairly common cause of patients presenting to hospital emergency departments. The foreign bodies that are accidentally swallowed by adults frequently include materials associated with dental procedures, most of which do not result in any complications. This paper presents the case of a 60-year-old female patient who presented to her GP because of increased abdominal pain. Conservative treatment was unsuccessful, so the patient was referred to the hospital with a suspected bowel obstruction. Diagnosis in the hospital revealed a perforation of the jejunum. The patient underwent emergency surgery and fragments of a cohesive substance were extracted from the bowel, which the patient associated with a dental impression procedure that was carried out 7 days earlier. However, chemical analysis of the extracted plastic fragments showed that they were parts of the silicone impression material used for so-called functional impressions used in the later stage of prosthesis preparation, not the alginate material used in the 1st stage. Analysis of the patient’s medical records and past medical history revealed a procedure completed 3 months earlier for another prosthesis and a condition following a hysterectomy for oncological reasons, together with numerous abdominal adhesions. Objective: It is intended in this case report to explain the multidisciplinary treatment of 2 non-syndromic cleft lip and palate patients with different approaches, the treatment phases of prosthetic rehabilitation and the results obtained. Case Reports:15-year-old unilateral cleft lip and palate patient and 25-year-old bilateral cleft lip and palate patient was admitted to our clinic with the functional and aesthetic complaints. Orthodontic, surgical and prosthetic treatments were applied Results: With multidisciplinary treatments aesthetic and functional solutions were provided. Aesthetic and functional results were obtained for both cases with fixed restorations. The treatments protocols had no complications. The outcomes were of high quality and brought satisfaction to the patients. Conclusion: Multidisciplinary treatment should be considered in cleft lip and palate patients in order to be able to fully ensure speech and hearing, continuation of occlusion and maxillofacial growth in the normal course and the improvement of physical appearance and psychological state. However, different treatment plans should be considered in its different timing for each case.

As new materials and processing techniques are steadily being introduced, the technological evolution of ceramics for dental applications has been remarkable. The interest of dental research in metal-free restorations has been rising following the introduction of innovative all-ceramic materials in the daily practice. In particular, high strength ceramics and related CAD/CAM techniques have widely increased the clinical indications of metal-free prostheses, showing more favourable mechanical characteristics compared to the early ceramic materials. Zirconia has been recently introduced in prosthetic dentistry as a biomaterial for the fabrication of crowns and fixed partial dentures, in combination with CAD/CAM techniques. The presented work provides the results of the abrasive wear resistance tests performed on Co-Cr-Mo and Co-Cr-Mo-W alloys with the use of the Miller’s apparatus. The analyzed alloys underwent microstructure observations as well as hardness measurements, and the abraded surfaces of the examined materials were observed by means of electron scanning microscopy. The performed examinations made it possible to state that the Co-Cr alloys characterized in a high hardness, whereas the changes in the mass decrement were minimal, which proved a high abrasive wear resistance.

A direct metal laser sintering method (DMLS) is a new technology used for getting structures by the CAD/CAM procedures. The aim of the elaboration was a question of structural identification and setting strength parameters of titanium (Ticp) and its alloy (Ti6Al4V) which are used to serve as base for those permanent prosthetic supplements which are later manufactured with the employment of CAD/CAM systems. The research work was performed on Ticp samples – those which were intended for manufacture of structures by decrement milling working, and Ti6Al4V samples that comes from laser increment sintering of powder. According to the results obtained, the following conclusion has been derived: when strength aspect is discussed, the DMLS method is a preferred one for manufacturing of load structures in dentistry and may be an alternate way for the CAD/CAM system used in decrement processing.

Introduction: According to demographic predictions, the number of people aged 65 years and more on a global scale will reach one billion in 2030. Understanding the epidemiology of prosthetic status and need for prosthetic treatment of tooth loss in the elderly population is essential to determine risk factors for tooth loss, prepare comprehensive dental treatment, and to develop appropriate prevention programmes. The purpose of this study was to compare the prosthetic status and prosthetic treatment in edentulous patients depending on the source of financing of dental treatment. Materials and methods: The study was conducted in a group of 294 people (163 women and 131 men] aged 65-74 years living in West Pomerania province in Poland. The clinical examination assessed the number of preserved teeth, the average number of DMF and its components, the number of preserved short-circuit supporting areas using a modified classification of missing teeth by Eichner,the status of prosthetic treatment, and the need for prosthetic treatment according to World Health Organization (Geneva, 1997]. Findings were compared with the source of financing of dental treatment. Results: The study found that among respondents using only dental services under the National Health Fund compared to those who use only the services of private dental offices there was: a higher percentage of edentulous people (27.4% vs. 2.06%], a lower percentage of people with preserved functional dentition (15.07% vs. 49.48%], a higher mean number of teeth removed (18.14 vs. 9.73], a higher percentage of people who do not have support zones (45.21% vs. 10.31%], a lower percentage of people using a complement fixed in the jaw (5.48% vs. 29.9%] and in the mandible (1.37% vs. 17.53%], a higher percentage of people using a full prosthesis in the jaw (34.25% vs. 4.12%] and in the mandible (23.29%) vs. 3.09%)], a lower percentage of people using a partial denture and prosthetic bridge or bridges in the jaw (1.37% vs. 10.31%)] and in the mandible (0.00% vs. 4.12%), and a higher per¬centage of people who required a dental prosthesis fixed in the jaw (23.29%) vs. 2.06%)] and in the mandible (20.55%) vs. 3.09%)]. Introduction: The purpose of this finite element analysis (FEA) was to complement results of previously published studies that investigated the influence of abutment resilience on the load-bearing capacity of zirconia posterior 4-unit fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) with static load tests. Materials and Methods: Duplicates of 3 different physical specimens were modeled for FEA. The first virtual specimen was supported by teeth with periodontal resilience, the second by the combination of tooth and implant, and the third by implants only. The center of the FDP was loaded, vertically to the occlusal plane. The highest maximum principal stresses (MPSs) were computed. Discussion: The highest MPS in each model occurred in the basal region of the middle framework connector. Comparison between the 3 models showed that the tensile stresses were lower when the support of the FDP was more rigid. Numerically determined highest MPSs in the FDPs correlated well with experimentally observed loadbearing capacities. Conclusion: The FEA is well suited to confirm the in vitro study mentioned and complement the results with stress distributions in allceramic posterior 4-unit FDP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anodontia is a rare genetic disorder, characterized by the partial or complete absence of dentition. It is rarely found in an isolated form, most of the time being associated with genetic syndromes such as ectodermal dysplasia. Ectodermal dysplasia is a rare genetic disorder, with recessive transmission linked to X chromosome, characterized by the triad: hypo-/anhydrosis, hypo-/ anodontia and hypotricosis/hair loss. Anodontia can be complete or partial (hypodontia, oligodontia). These anomalies of dentition may interest both primary and permanent dentition. In this paper, we present a series of eight cases identified based on clinical criteria, with the diagnosis of ectodermal dysplasia, at the “Alessandrescu- Rusescu” National Institute for Mother and Child Health, from Bucharest. The management of the patient with ectodermal dysplasia is complex and requires a multidisciplinary approach (pediatrician, geneticist, dentist, psychologist). Introduction: Presentation of a case of a female patient being treated at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Clinical Hospital Dubrava. Two weeks after getting dermal filler injections in the left and right cheekbones in an external institution, the patient developed complications in the form of swelling, pain and deviation to the r when opening the mouth, as well as crepitation of the left temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Case report: The patient was primarily treated in the institution where the procedure was done, where due to swelling in the area of application in the left cheekbone Klavocin BID was prescribed and after the symptoms persisted hyaluronidase was applied. Due to unsuccessful treatment, the patient was further referred to an otolaryngology (ENT) specialist and later on to a specialist in dental prosthetics who made a stabilization splint for her. In order to establish complete diagnosis and therapy, the patient came to Clinical Hospital Dubrava for consultation regarding possible surgical therapy. A thorough examination of the face, masticatory muscles and TMJ revealed no indication for surgical treatment, thus nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and exercises to stabilize the TMJ were prescribed. The patient was also referred to a specialist in dental prosthetics for correction of the stabilization splint since it was not designed to guide her into a centric relation. After 5 months of observation, the symptoms still intermittently appear, but the patient feels an improvement of the mentioned complaints. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The aim of the present paper was a question of structural identification and evaluation of strength parameters of Titanium (Ticp - grade 2) and its alloy (Ti6Al4V) which are used to serve as a base for those permanent prosthetic supplements which are later manufactured employing CAD/CAM systems. Methods: Microstructural tests of Ticp and Ti6Al4V were conducted using an optical microscope as well as a scanning microscope. Hardness was measured with the Vickers method. Micromechanical properties of samples: microhardness and Young's modulus value, were measured with the Oliver and Pharr method. Results: Based on studies using optical microscopy it was observed that the Ticp from the milling technology had a single phase, granular microstructure. The Ti64 alloy had a two-phase, fine-grained microstructure with an acicular-lamellar character. The results of scanning tests show that titanium Ticp had a single phase structure. On its grain there was visible acicular martensite. The structure of the two phase Ti64 alloy consists of a β matrix as well as released α; phase deposits in the shape of extended needles. Micromechanical tests demonstrated that the alloy of Ti64 in both methods showed twice as high the microhardness as Ticp. In studies of Young's modulus of Ti64 alloy DMLS technology have lower value than titanium milling technology. Conclusions: According to the results obtained, the following conclusion has been drawn: when strength aspect is discussed, the DMLS method is a preferred one in manufacturing load structures in dentistry and may be an alternate way for the CAD/CAM system used in decrement processing. Because of its ability to non-invasively capture hard structures behind soft tissue, high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS)-assisted microscanning could be a patient-friendly and promising alternative for digitization of prepared teeth. However, intra-oral HFUS microscanners for taking digital impressions of prepared teeth are still not available in the clinical setting. Because working range, scanner size, scanning time, surface reconstruction accuracy and costs are major factors in such a system, our overall objective is to minimize hardware efforts and costs while maintaining the accuracy of the surface-reconstructed tooth model in the range 50 μm. In the work described here, we investigated the accuracy of tooth impression taking using a single-element HFUS microscanner with only three translational degrees of freedom under the restriction that only one occlusal scan is performed per tooth. As in favor of time and scanning efforts the data density is expected to be low, the surface reconstruction process is linked to a model-based surface reconstruction approach using a thin spline robust point matching algorithm to fill data gaps. A priori knowledge for the model is generated based on the original HFUS measurement data. Three artificial teeth and one human molar were prepared and scanned using an extra-oral HFUS laboratory microscanner that was built to test and evaluate different scanning setups. A scanner with three translational degrees of freedom was used to scan the teeth from an occlusal direction. After application of the proposed thin-spline robust point matching algorithm-based reconstruction approach, reconstruction accuracy was assessed by comparing the casts with a control group scanned with an extra-oral laser-scanning system. The mean difference between the reconstructed casts and the optical control group was in the range 14–53 μm. The standard deviation was between 21 and 52 μm. This let us assume that the suggested approach can help to decrease hardware efforts while maintaining the robustness of the 3-D surface reconstruction process for future HFUS-based intra-oral scanners. Lithium disilicate and Zirconia ceramics offer a high level of accuracy when used in prosthetic dentistry. Their bonding using different resins is highly dependent on micro-mechanical interlocking and adhesive chemical bonding. Investigation of the performances of high strength ceramics when their surface is modified for chemical and mechanical bonding is then required. The aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of using laser for surface treatment of different high strength CAD/CAM ceramics and thus to improve their mechanical and chemical properties. Thirty two CAD/CAM ceramic discs were divided into two different groups: lithium disilicate ceramics (IPS e.max CAD®, Ivoclar, Vivadent, Italy) and Zirconia ceramics (IPS e.max ZirCAD®, Ivoclar, Vivadent, Italy). The Laser surface treatment was performed by Carbon Dioxide laser (Dream Pulse Laser®, Daeshin Enterprise Corp., Korea) at 20W, 25W and 30W CW and by Neodymium Yttrium Aluminum Perovskite laser (Nd:YAP Lokki®, Lobel Medical, France) at 10W and 30Hz. Physical modifications of the irradiated ceramic discs were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chemically analyzed by Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Surface wettability was tested using the water drop test and the crystalline structure was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The macroscopic observation showed a shinier structure in all the groups, while at the SEM observation only CO2 25W and 30W treated groups showed cracks and fissures. In the conditions of this study, CO2 laser and Nd:YAP laser with the parameters used create chemical and physical surface modifications of the ceramics, indicating the possibility of an improvement in adhesion of the tested ceramics.
