Abstract

La presente investigación tiene como propósito evaluar las propiedades psicométricas de dos escalas e identi - ficar las actitudes y creencias hacia los medios de comunicación en universitarios del sur de Chile. Se diseñó un instrumento a partir de las Escalas de Creencias hacia los Medios (ECM) y Actitudes hacia los Medios (EAM) para evaluar las creencias y actitudes hacia los medios de la población mencionada. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 187 estudiantes universitarios de la ciudad de Temuco, Chile. La escala fue sometida a un Análisis Factorial Exploratorio y quedó constituida por dos sub-escalas: la creencias acerca de los medios (ECM) y actitudes hacia los medios (EAM). Entre los hallazgos se destaca que cada medio evaluado presentó un patrón de creencias asociado a actitudes, lo que probó que las creencias afectivas son relevantes en la configuración de las actitudes hacia los medios y que los individuos solo reconocen concientemente el impacto de estos cuando su influencia se considera positiva.

Abstract

La presente investigación estudió el cambio en las prácticas pedagógicas de profesores y profesoras de Educación Primaria, a partir de su participación en un Programa de formación en Educación Económica para escolares de 6.to año. La muestra estuvo conformada por 14 profesores de las asignaturas de Comprensión del Medio, Lenguaje y Comunicación y Matemáticas, a quienes se aplicó el Test de Alfabetización Económica para Adultos (TAE-A) (Gempp, Denegri, Catalán, Caripán, Hermosilla y Caprile, 2007) y la Pauta de Observación de Práctica Docentes (Denegri, 2005). Los resultados revelan un aumento en los niveles de alfabetización económica y diferencias significativas en la práctica docente de las y losprofesores participantes, hallazgos que se discuten a partir de los antecedentes bibliográficos.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of orthognatic surgery on sings and symptoms of tempormandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). 16 patients with esqueletic class iii pattern were examined before and after orthognathic surgery. Eight of the patients underwent intraoral oblique osteotomy (IORO) and the other eight received sagital split ramus osteotomy (SSRO). In addition, two patients of each group received a Le Fort i osteotomy. Patients were evaluated for signs and symptoms related to TMD before surgery and changes in those were recorded at one, three and six mouths after intervention. There were not significant differences in the frequencies of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sounds, TMJ pain or muscular pain between cases of both groups. Improvement in signs and symptoms of TMD was noticed in all patients, although, a postoperative reduction in mandibular aperture was also evident. A significant improvement in the frequency of headache was reported for five out of six patients after the surgery. The results of this study show that IORO and SSRO can improved TMD signs and symptoms, but no significant differences were observed between these procedures. The numberof cases included are reduced and limit the power of the results.

Abstract

Salivary glands are symmetrical structures located near the ramus and the body of the mandible. They are the parotid glands (serous saliva), sub maxillary (predominantly serous) and sub lingual (predominantly mucous); besides numerous minor salivary glands exist on the surface of the buccal, yugal, palatine and sub lingual mucosa (300-400 approximately) that produce mucous saliva. The purpose of this literature review, is to present the difeferent infectious processes that affect the glands, the different diagnostic approaches and the treatment guidelines. The infectious disorders of the salivary glands are within the area of the responsibility of the dentistry, and every dentist must be acquainted with these disorders, with the available technologies of diagnosis and must be able to refer those cases that need the care of a specialist.

Abstract

Ameloblastoma is the most common benign tumor, It represents 1% of all odontogenic tumors and comprises 11 to 18% of all maxillary lesions. Eighty percent of the cases described are located in the body of the mandible and its angle; it affects males and females equally, and its more prevalent during the third and fourth decades of life. This tumor has diverse clinical, radiographical and histo-pathological aspects. Although it is considered a benign pathology, it is locally invasive and has a high rate of recurrence. The objective of this article is to present the experience obtained with the diagnosis and treatment of ten cases of ameloblastoma in patients ranging from 12 and 73 years of age. Eighty percent of theses cases were located in the mandible and were causing different clinical manifestations such as: facial asymmetry, dental displacement, root resorption, alteration in the occlusion, pain, masticatory difficulty and pathological fractures. According to their image a radiographic classification was made, identifying them as unilocular and multilocular. Histopathologically, they were grouped according to the observed variant. Different treatment alternatives are described, as well as the complications encountered. Two patients had previous surgery for dentigerous cysts in the same area. Two cases had recurrent ameloblastoma five years after their surgical interventions performed in other institutions.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Congenital cytomegalovirus infection (CMVc) affects 0.7%-6% of recent births. Among its clinical manifestations are low weight and length at birth. OBJECTIVE: Describe the growth patterns of children with CMVc in their early years. METHODS: Observational, multicenter study of patients with CMVc. Anthropometric data were collected during the first 2 years of life and compared with World Health Organization standards. RESULTS: Anthropometric characteristics of 383 children with CMVc were studied, of which 198 (51%) were symptomatic at birth. At birth, 9% were small for gestational age (SGA) in terms of their weight and length and 17% had microcephaly. At 24 ± 3 months, 10% had a weight and length =2 SD, and 13% a head circumference =2 SD. Of those who were SGA at birth, at 24 ± 3 months >20% remained at =2 SD of their weight and length. Conversely, 75% of children with low weight or length at 24 ± 3 had not been SGA at birth. 20% of infants with microcephaly at birth remained with microcephaly, and 10% of those without microcephaly developed it at 24 ± 3 months. The average growth rate in length and weight was normal. Patients who were symptomatic at birth, premature and with motor and neurocognitive impairment had a significantly higher risk of low weight and length at 24 ± 3 months. CONCLUSION: Around 10% of children with CMVc are at =2 SD in weight, length and head circumference at 24 ± 3 months. The lack of adequate growth is associated with symptoms at birth, prematurity and motor and neurocognitive impairment. Growth impairment could be incorporated into the symptomatic spectrum of CMVc.

45. Amber in Portugal: state of the art

Abstract

Portuguese amber has received very little attention from the paleontological and geological points of view. To our knowledge, only twelve amber outcrops or amber-bearing areas have been detected in Portugal. The first outcrops were cited in times as old as 1867 and 1910, and although some of them were considered Jurassic in age, most likely the amber came from Cretaceous deposits. The Portuguese outcrops are poor in amber and, thus far, only a dipteran (Nematocera) insect has been found as bioinclusion (Cascais amber); the area of Estoril-Cascais, near Lisbon, provides amber interesting from the paleoentomological standpoint. In contrast, prehistoric amber from Portugal, namely as diverse types of beads and pendants, has been researched in some detail during the last decades. The 25 archeological localities known occur from north to south, ranging in ages from the Neolithic through the Chalcolithic to the Late Bronze Age. Further research is required to prospect the known paleontological localities, and also to look for new ones, in order to obtain stratigraphically contextualized samples and to perform the first infrared and/or Raman spectroscopy analyses. This will allow comparing these with the infrared and/or Raman spectra of archeological pieces to shed light on the origin of the amber as a raw material during prehistoric times. The potential discovery of a paleontological locality yielding abundant bioinclusions would be of great interest, as it would allow taxonomic and paleoecological comparisons with the rich Cretaceous outcrops from the north and northeastern Iberian Peninsula

Abstract

The Chilean economic model has increased the risk of financial transactions in a population with low levels of economic literacy. Especially worrying is the situation of teachers and university students of pedagogy by multiplicative impact of their conduct on future students. The objectives were to detect gaps of knowledge in economic and financial education based on the review of the research developed in Chile; and to propose an educational model for financial and economic literacy in initial teacher training. The results show the precarious economic training in the educational curriculum and the need to intervene in different segments of population, especially teachers and students of pedagogy. The researchers propose a model that integrates the components of economic education and their articulators concepts with the guidelines of the OECD, the specific contents and teaching methodology in a proposal of economic education for initial teacher training., El modelo económico chileno ha aumentado el riesgo de las operaciones financieras en una población con bajos niveles de alfabetización económica. Especialmente preocupante es la situación de profesores y estudiantes universitarios de pedagogía, por el impacto multiplicativo de su conducta en futuros estudiantes. Los objetivos fueron detectar brechas de conocimiento en educación económica y financiera, a partir de la investigación desarrollada en Chile y proponer un modelo educativo para la alfabetización económica y financiera en la formación inicial docente. Los resultados indican la precaria formación económica en el currículum educativo y la necesidad de intervenir en distintos segmentos de la población, especialmente en profesores y estudiantes de pedagogía. Abstract

Los estudiantes universitarios se encuentran en una etapa del ciclo vital clave para la adopcion de estilos de vida, que practicaran en el ambito familiar, social y laboral. En este periodo los estudiantes adquieren mayor autonomia y asumen la responsabilidad de su autocuidado, por lo cual se convierte en una etapa critica para el desarrollo de sus estilos de vida. Existe una alta prevalencia de factores de riesgo de enfermedades cronicas no transmisibles en los universitarios, entre los que destacan pre-hipertension especialmente en hombres y la hipercolesterolemia en mujeres. Tambien el tabaquismo, sedentarismo, sobrepeso, obesidad, bajo consumo de frutas y verduras, y alto consumo de grasas saturadas. Se encontraron diferencias en los factores de riesgo cardiovascular de acuerdo al genero, curso y facultad de los estudiantes. Se recomienda consideran estas diferencias al disenar y realizar intervenciones educativas para lograr una mayor asertividad y efectividad. El presente articulo revisa la evidencia sobre los factores de riesgo cardiovascular en estudiantes universitarios de acuerdo al genero, curso y facultad, segun el modelo propuesto por Cecchini y cols. y al estudio de Framingham.
