Introduction Previous studies demonstrated that the implementation of the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guideline-based bundle, consisting of different supportive measures in patients at high risk for acute kidney injury (AKI), might reduce rate and severity of AKI after surgery. However, the effects of the care bundle in broader population of patients undergoing surgery require confirmation.Methods and analysis The BigpAK-2 trial is an international, randomised, controlled, multicentre trial. The trial aims to enrol 1302 patients undergoing major surgery who are subsequently admitted to the intensive care or high dependency unit and are at high-risk for postoperative AKI as identified by urinary biomarkers (tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 2*insulin like growth factor binding protein 7 (TIMP-2)*IGFBP7)). Eligible patients will be randomised to receive either standard of care (control) or a KDIGO-based AKI care bundle (intervention). The primary endpoint is the incidence of moderate or severe AKI (stage 2 or 3) within 72 hours after surgery, according to the KDIGO 2012 criteria. Secondary endpoints include adherence to the KDIGO care bundle, occurrence and severity of any stage of AKI, change in biomarker values during 12 hours after initial measurement of (TIMP-2)*(IGFBP7), number of free days of mechanical ventilation and vasopressors, need for renal replacement therapy (RRT), duration of RRT, renal recovery, 30-day and 60-day mortality, intensive care unit length-of-stay and hospital length-of-stay and major adverse kidney events. An add-on study will investigate blood and urine samples from recruited patients for immunological functions and kidney damage.Ethics and dissemination The BigpAK-2 trial was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Medical Faculty of the University of Münster and subsequently by the corresponding Ethics Committee of the participating sites. A study amendment was approved subsequently. In the UK, the trial was adopted as an NIHR portfolio study. Results will be disseminated widely and published in peer-reviewed journals, presented at conferences and will guide patient care and further research.Trial registration number NCT04647396.

Laser irradiation of randomly oriented multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) networks has been carried out using a pulsed Nd:YAG UV laser in nitrogen gas environment. The evolution of the MWCNT morphology and structure as a function of laser fluence and number of accumulated laser pulses has been studied using electron microscopies and Raman spectroscopy. The observed changes are discussed and correlated with thermal simulations. The obtained results indicate that laser irradiation induces very fast, high temperature thermal cycles in MWCNTs which produce the formation of different nanocarbon forms, such as nanodiamonds. Premelting processes have been observed in localized sites by irradiation at low number of laser pulses and low fluence values. The accumulation of laser pulses and the increase in the fluence cause the full melting and amorphization of MWCNTs. The fabrication of bendable electronic devices is a scientific-technological area of very rapid advance in which new materials and fabrication techniques are being continuously developed. In these kinds of devices, the fabrication of flexible conductive electrodes adherent to the substrate is a key factor. Further, eco-friendliness, low cost and fast production are essential requirements for the successful progress of new technologies. In this work, a novel method for obtaining graphene-based flexible electrodes is presented. Conductive films were obtained by means of the visible laser irradiation of graphene oxide layers deposited on polyethylene terephthalate substrates and self-standing membranes sandwiched between glass slides. Despite the low power of the laser system, the numerical simulations indicate the development of temperatures over 1000 K throughout the irradiated material. The laser-induced spatially confined heating leads to the reduction of the graphene oxide material, whereas the glass-based sandwich assembly avoids reoxidation from the surrounding air. By scanning and pixelated modes, reduced graphene oxide electrodes, up to 100 μm in thickness, and with a resistivity as low as 6 × 10−4 Ωm, were obtained in an easy and versatile way. Highly crystalline epitaxial Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 (BST) thin-films are grown on (001)-oriented LaNiO3-buffered LaAlO3 substrates by pulsed laser irradiation of solution derived bariumzirconium-titanium precursor layers using a UV Nd:YAG laser source at atmospheric conditions. The structural analyses of the obtained films, studied by X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy, demonstrate that laser processing allows the growth of tens of nm-thick BST epitaxial films with crystalline structure similar to that of films obtained through conventional thermal annealing methods. However, the fast pulsed nature of the laser employed leads to crystallization kinetic evolution orders of magnitude faster than in thermal treatments. The combination of specific photothermal and photochemical mechanisms is the main responsible for the ultrafast epitaxial laser-induced crystallization. Piezoresponse microscopy measurements demonstrate equivalent ferroelectric behavior in laser and thermally annealed films, being the piezoelectric constant ~25 pm V-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The epitaxial growth of Ce0.9Zr0.1O2-y (CZO) thin-films on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) (001) single crystal and YSZ (001)/stainless steel (YSZ/SS) technological substrates is investigated by pulsed laser irradiation of solution-derived cerium-zirconium precursor layers using a UV Nd:YAG laser source at atmospheric conditions. The influence of laser processing parameters on the morphological and structural properties of the obtained films is studied by atomic force and transmission electron microscopies, as well as X-ray diffractometry. The analyses performed demonstrate that laser treatments enable the epitaxial growth of tens of nanometers thick CZO films with a crystallization kinetic process several orders of magnitude faster than that of conventional thermal annealing. Fully epitaxial films are attained using stainless steel (SS) flexible tapes as a substrate. Even though photochemical mechanisms are not fully discarded, it is concluded that photothermal processes are the main contribution responsible for the fast epitaxial crystallization. WO and Ag-WO nanocomposite thin films have been synthesized from pure WO and Ag-WO composite pressed powder targets submitted to pulses generated by a frequency quadrupled Nd:yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG; λ = 266 nm, τ ~ 5 ns, ν = 10 Hz) laser source. The irradiations were performed in low pressure oxygen atmosphere. The obtained results proved the possibility to tailor the synthesized thin films optical properties in the UV-Visible spectral region and their nano-scale electrical characteristics through the process parameters, as ambient oxygen pressure value during the thin films deposition and Ag concentration of the Ag-WO composite targets. The tunable optical and electrical features allow for the creation of new materials for future applications as photocatalysts, transparent conducting electrodes, electrochromic or chemical and biological sensor devices. We report the processing and immobilization of enzyme Ribonuclease A (RNase A) onto SiO2 glass collectors using the matrix assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE) technique. The experiments were performed inside a stainless steel irradiation chamber. A pulsed UV KrF* (λ = 248 nm, τFWHM ≈ 25 ns, m = 10 Hz) excimer laser source was used for the irradiations. The laser fluence was varied in the range 0.4-0.7 J/cm². The morphology of the obtained films was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and their structure and composition by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The FTIR spectra of the films obtained from composite MAPLE targets consisting of 1% (w/v) RNase A in Hepes-KOH 10 mM pH 7.5 buffer exhibit the same bands as the spectrum of the initial, nonirradiated material. The enzymatic activity of the obtained structures was analyzed using synthetic substrate polycytidylic acid (poly(C)). The poly (C) cleavage by the immobilized enzyme and the products of formation were analyzed by means of reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Titanium targets with a bias voltage ranging from -500 to +500 V were submitted to multipulse high repetition rate Nd:yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG; λ = 1.064 µm, τ ∼ 300 ns, v = 30 kHz) laser irradiations in nitrogen at intensity values below the single-pulse melting threshold. The morphology of the TiN structures formed under the cumulative action of the laser pulses on the surface of the unbiased and biased targets was investigated by profilometry and scanning electron microscopy. Under these irradiation conditions, a specific columnar surface microrelief developed. The height of the microcolumns reached about 10-15 µm, and their diameter about 1-2 µm. The development of TiN microcolumns was enhanced by the applied bias voltage. The enhancement in the negative biased samples was stronger than that in the positive biased ones. Abstract: Titanium oxides have anti-inflammatory activity and tunable electrochemical properties that make them attractive materials for biomedical applications. This work investigated the compatibility of nanometric coatings of low-temperature phases of TiO2 with neurons in 4-day and 10-day cultures, using different cell densities to quantify cell survival and neurite extension. TiO2 films were prepared by sol–gel and thermal treatment (250–450 °C) of hydrolyzed titanium tetra-isopropoxide on electrically conducting or insulating slides. The conducting substrates were not passivated by the nanometric oxide layer and could be used as electrodes. Characterization of the films showed nano-structured TiO2 containing exclusively Ti+4 valence in anatase and amorphous phases. When coated with polylysine, all films permitted good neuron attachment and survival for at least ten days in culture. However, they generally reduced neurite growth compared to cell culture borosilicate glass, with dendrites more affected than axons. The analyses of surface topography, hydrophilicity, charge and chemical composition revealed that TiO2 chemistry was the main factor responsible for neurite inhibition. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Laser irradiation of Ge quantum dots (QDs) grown on Si(100) substrates by solid-source molecular beam epitaxy has been performed using a Nd:YAG laser (532 nm wavelength, 5 ns pulse duration) in a vacuum. The evolution of the Ge QD morphology, strain and composition with the number of laser pulses incident on the same part of the surface, have been studied using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The observed changes in the topographical and structural properties of the QDs are discussed in terms of Ge-Si diffusion processes. Numerical simulations have been developed for the investigation of the temperature evolution of the QDs during laser irradiation. The obtained results indicate that the thermal behaviour and structural variation of the nanostructures differ from conventional thermal annealing treatments and can be controlled by the laser parameters. Moreover, an unusual island motion has been observed under the action of subsequent laser pulses.
