Abstract

New challenges on transport systems are emerging due to the advances that the current paradigm is experiencing. The breakthrough of the autonomous car brings concerns about ride comfort, while the pollution concerns have arisen in recent years. In the model of automated automobiles, drivers are expected to become passengers, so, they will be more prone to suffer from ride discomfort or motion sickness. Conversely, the eco‐driving implications should not be set aside because of the influence of pollution on climate and people's health. For that reason, a joint assessment of the aforementioned points would have a positive impact. Thus, this work presents a self‐organised map‐based solution to assess ride comfort features of individuals considering their driving style from the viewpoint of eco‐driving. For this purpose, a previously acquired dataset from an instrumented car was used to classify drivers regarding the causes of their lack of ride comfort and eco‐friendliness. Once drivers are classified regarding their driving style, natural‐language‐based recommendations are proposed to increase the engagement with the system. Hence, potential improvements of up to the 57.7% for ride comfort evaluation parameters, as well as up to the 47.1% in greenhouse‐gasses emissions are expected to be reached. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major health problem, with over one million events every year in Europe. However, there is a paucity of data on the current management in real life, including factors influencing treatment pathways, patient satisfaction, quality of life (QoL), and utilization of health care resources and the corresponding costs. The PREFER in VTE registry has been designed to address this and to understand medical care and needs as well as potential gaps for improvement. Methods/design: The PREFER in VTE registry was a prospective, observational, multicenter study conducted in seven European countries including Austria, France Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK to assess the characteristics and the management of patients with VTE, the use of health care resources, and to provide data to estimate the costs for 12 months treatment following a first-time and/or recurrent VTE diagnosed in hospitals or specialized or primary care centers. In addition, existing anticoagulant treatment patterns, patient pathways, clinical outcomes, treatment satisfaction, and health related QoL were documented. The centers were chosen to reflect the care environment in which patients with VTE are managed in each of the participating countries. Patients were eligible to be enrolled into the registry if they were at least 18 years old, had a symptomatic, objectively confirmed first time or recurrent acute VTE defined as either distal or proximal deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or both. After the baseline visit at the time of the acute VTE event, further follow-up documentations occurred at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Follow-up data was collected by either routinely scheduled visits or by telephone calls. Results: Overall, 381 centers participated, which enrolled 3,545 patients during an observational period of 1 year. Conclusion: The PREFER in VTE registry will provide valuable insights into the characteristics of patients with VTE and their acute and mid-term management, as well as into drug utilization and the use of health care resources in acute first-time and/or recurrent VTE across Europe in clinical practice. Abstract

Spent mushroom compost is the residual compost waste generated by the mushroom production industry. Annually 3 million tons of these residues are generated in Europe resulting in disposal costs of up to 150 million Euro. The BIOrescue project aims to develop an innovative biorefinery strategy to valorise this promising source of biomass together with other underutilised lignocellulosic feedstocks. Abstract

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major health problem, with over one million events every year in Europe. However, there is a paucity of data on the current management in real life, including factors influencing treatment pathways, patient satisfaction, quality of life (QoL), and utilization of health care resources and the corresponding costs. The PREFER in VTE registry has been designed to address this and to understand medical care and needs as well as potential gaps for improvement. Methods/design: The PREFER in VTE registry was a prospective, observational, multicenter study conducted in seven European countries including Austria, France Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK to assess the characteristics and the management of patients with VTE, the use of health care resources, and to provide data to estimate the costs for 12 months treatment following a first-time and/or recurrent VTE diagnosed in hospitals or specialized or primary care centers. In addition, existing anticoagulant treatment patterns, patient pathways, clinical outcomes, treatment satisfaction, and health related QoL were documented. The centers were chosen to reflect the care environment in which patients with VTE are managed in each of the participating countries. Patients were eligible to be enrolled into the registry if they were at least 18 years old, had a symptomatic, objectively confirmed first time or recurrent acute VTE defined as either distal or proximal deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or both. After the baseline visit at the time of the acute VTE event, further follow-up documentations occurred at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Follow-up data was collected by either routinely scheduled visits or by telephone calls. Results: Overall, 381 centers participated, which enrolled 3,545 patients during an observational period of 1 year. Abstract

Gasification is generally acknowledged as one of the technologies that will enable the large-scale production of biofuels and chemicals from biomass and waste. One of the main technical challenges associated to the deployment of biomass gasification as a commercial technology is the cleaning and upgrading of the product gas. The contaminants of product gas from biomass/waste gasification include dust, tars, alkali metals, BTX, sulphur-, nitrogen- and chlorine compounds, and heavy metals. Proper measurement of the components and contaminants of the product gas is essential for the monitoring of gasification-based plants (efficiency, product quality, by-products), as well as for the proper design of the downstream gas cleaning train (for example, scrubbers, sorbents, etc.). In practice, a trade-off between reliability, accuracy and cost has to be reached when selecting the proper analysis technique for a specific application. The deployment and implementation of inexpensive yet accurate gas analysis techniques to monitor the fate of gas contaminants might play an important role in the commercialization of biomass and waste gasification processes. This special report commissioned by the IEA Bioenergy Task 33 group compiles a representative part of the extensive work developed in the last years by relevant actors in the field of gas analysis applied to(biomass and waste) gasification. The approach of this report has been based on the creation of a team of contributing partners who have supplied material to the report. This networking approach has been complemented with a literature review. The report is composed of a set of 2 documents. Document 1(the present report) describes the available analysis techniques (both commercial and underdevelopment) for the measurement of different compounds of interest present in gasification gas. The objective is to help the reader to properly select the analysis technique most suitable to the target compounds and the intended applicat, The work collected in this report has been the result of the joint effort and kind collaboration of a group of experts in the field of gas analysis and biomass gasification. The coordinators would like to warmly thank all the contributing partners for their generous support in sharing their material and experience for this report. It has been the sum of the experiences of this large group of experts that has added the value to this report. Abstract

Mushroom production generates three million tonnes of compost each year in the European Union which is currently landfilled or used for landscaping purposes even though it contains valuable organic components. In view of transforming this compost into a new income stream for mushroom producers, the BIOrescue project aims to develop and demonstrate a new innovative biorefinery concept based on the cascading use of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) supplemented by wheat straw (and other seasonal underutilized lignocellulosic feedstocks). This new concept will avoid disposal and allow for the production of some biodegradable bio-based products and bioactive compounds that will help to replace the existing ones based on fossil resources. The research will help to expand the business opportunities of the mushroom cultivation farms, and the know-how and business opportunities of all the partners involved. The main scientific innovations are: improved methods for the lab-based rapid (NIR) (1) analysis of biomass, innovative two step fractionation of SMS, synergistic effects for complete SMS glucan hydrolysis, innovative enzyme immobilisation strategy, development of highly efficient glucan-enzymes, novel lignin based nano- and micro-carriers and biopesticide production from monomeric sugars derived from SMS and their packaging into nanocarriers., Proceedings of the 25th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, 12-15 June 2017, Stockholm, Sweden, pp. 2015-2018

Abstract

SummaryVenous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in Europe. Data from real-world registries are necessary, as clinical trials do not represent the full spectrum of VTE patients seen in clinical practice. We aimed to document the epidemiology, management and outcomes of VTE using data from a large, observational database. PREFER in VTE was an international, non-interventional disease registry conducted between January 2013 and July 2015 in primary and secondary care across seven European countries. Consecutive patients with acute VTE were documented and followed up over 12 months. PREFER in VTE included 3,455 patients with a mean age of 60.8 ± 17.0 years. Overall, 53.0% were male. The majority of patients were assessed in the hospital setting as inpatients or outpatients (78.5%). The diagnosis was deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) in 59.5% and pulmonary embolism (PE) in 40.5%. The most common comorbidities were the various types of cardiovascular disease (excluding hypertension; 45.5%), hypertension (42.3%) and dyslipidaemia (21.1%). Following the index VTE, a large proportion of patients received initial therapy with heparin (73.2%), almost half received a vitamin K antagonist (48.7%) and nearly a quarter received a DOAC (24.5%). Almost a quarter of all presentations were for recurrent VTE, with >80% of previous episodes having occurred more than 12 months prior to baseline. In conclusion, PREFER in VTE has provided contemporary insights into VTE patients and their real-world management, including their baseline characteristics, risk factors, disease history, symptoms and signs, initial therapy and outcomes.

Abstract

Biobutanol is an exciting alternative to first generation biofuels due to its physical and chemical characteristics, making it more fuel efficient and suitable for use in spark ignition and diesel engines without the need for modification. However, due to the inefficiencies and costs associated with the current production process, biobutanol is yet to gain market establishment. The ButaNexT project will develop highly efficient production processes for the conversion of sustainable feedstocks into the next generation biobutanol. This will contribute to overcoming the current challenges and limitations exhibited by first generation biofuels. The ButaNexT consortium is a multi-disciplinary team of SMEs, large companies and research centres from Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. The team aspires to optimise each stage of the biobutanol production value chain: biomass pre-treatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation, downstream processing and blending. It is expected that ButaNexT will achieve significant reductions in both production costs (up to 50%, to attain price-parity with first generation biofuels) and carbon emissions (up to 85%) compared with fossil fuels (gasoline and diesel). Fibre sorghum and miscanthus are recognized as two of the most promising crops for providing dry biomass suited for thermo-chemical conversion processes. Despite their high biomass yield potential, several concerns may arise related to their economic sustainability. Operation costs for harvesting and handling, as well as biomass losses (i.e. quantity and quality decrease) along the supply chain can significantly affect final biofuel price, making biomass less attractive in relation to other renewable energy sources. Therefore, optimizing logistics of biomass energy chains is a key factor for reducing costs of biofuel production from energy crops. The region of Navarra in Spain has important agriculture and agro-industrial outputs that can be used as feedstocks in a biorefinery. For this reason, several research organizations (1) have joined efforts to carry out a project for the definition of a biorefinery concept for the Navarra region. The project is divided in three work-packages: WP1-Feedstocks, WP2-Conversion processes and WP3-Biorefinery concept design. Within WP2, an evaluation of several conversion processes is being carried out. In this context, pretreatment assays using cereal straw as feedstock under diverse conditions (temperature, residence time and acid) have given a broad amount of slurries with high variability regarding its carbohydrate composition and their prone for enzymatic digestibility. These results have been used to correlate two important parameters when designing a biorefinery process, xylose concentration after pretreatment and glucan to glucose conversion yield after enzymatic hydrolysis. The BioTrade2020plus project has the aim of providing guidelines for the development of a European Bioenergy Trade Strategy for 2020 and beyond. This strategy aims to ensure that imported biomass feedstock is sustainably sourced and avoids distortion of other markets. It will also be important to find a basis for a balanced approach between promoting the use of domestic biomass, while also keeping EU markets open for sustainable imports. The project will focus on lignocellulosic biomass (woody resources, agricultural residues and cellulosic crops), from the following sourcing regions: North America (Southeast United States), South America (Brazil, Colombia), East Europe (Ukraine), Southeast Asia (Indonesia/Malaysia) and East Africa (Kenya/Mozambique). This paper presents the first outcomes and lessons learnt during the first half of the project. Abstract

Carles Jordà i Fages neix a Figueres el 1883 i mor a Pont de Molins el 1935. És l’hereu d’una família d’hisendats que aviat diversificarà les seves inversions, de manera decidida, en el negoci bancari, la qual cosa permetrà que ell i les seves germanes es traslladin a estudiar a Barcelona. Estudiarà enginyeria i entrarà en contacte amb els nuclis catalanistes de la Lliga que el portaran a ser elegit per a càrrecs polítics a la Mancomunitat de Catalunya i a l’Ajuntament de Barcelona, on arribarà a ser alcalde accidental. Unes inversions amb mals resultats truncaran la seva vida barcelonina i el 1921 retornarà a l’Empordà. On manté la seva presència política i serà un dels fundadors d’Acció Catalana. Per la seva afiliació política, durant la dictadura de Primo de Rivera serà perseguit i exiliat a Casp. De retorn a l’Empordà, impulsa el cooperativisme agrari. Amb la II República mantindrà la seva adscripció política, però, sobretot, accentuarà la seva faceta de dirigent agrari des de la Unió Sindical Agrària, que se situarà en una difícil aposta, entre la patronal agrària i el sindicalisme rabassaire, tot buscant fórmules de concòrdia i entesa en moments de radicalització. Morirà en plena maduresa el 1935. La seva memòria es perdrà durant el franquisme i la democràcia restaurada., Carles Jordà I Fages was born in Figueres in 1883 and died in Pont de Molins in 1935. He was the heir of a family of landowners who early on determined to diversify their investments in banking businesses, among others. This allowed him and his sisters to move to Barcelona for their studies. He studied engineering and came into contact with the Catalan centres of the Lliga which led to his election to political offices during theMancomunitat de Catalonia and at the city council of Barcelona, where he became acting mayor. Some bad investments led to the end of his residence in Barcelona and he returned to the Empordà in 1921 where he maintained his political presence and became one of the founders of Acció Catalana. During the Primo de Rivera dictatorship he was persecuted for his political alliances and exiled to Casp. Upon return to the Empordà, he promoted agrarian cooperatives. With the Second Republic, he maintained his political subscription but especially accentuated his role as agrarian leader with the Unió Sindical Agrària, which, with a difficult commitment, acted between the agrarian landowners’ union and workers' syndicalism by trying to find peaceful ways and understanding in times of radicalization. He died at a prime age in 1935 while developing his role as mediator. His legacy was forgotten during the Franco regime and the restored democracy.

The annual production of fruits in Navarre (Spain) and Aquitania (France) is approximately 454.123 tons and vegetable production was about 1.202.762 tonnes (2003-2007 MARM and Eurostat). Considering current production processes approximately 12% of the amounts processed are wastes. This percentage could be increased until 40-60% depending on the process, so annual production of organic wastes could be approximately between 200.000 -800.000 tonnes/annual. Kiwi, peach and strawberry by-products from fruits food processing industry were tested as possible feedstocks for 2nd generation biofuels production and bioactive compounds extraction. In a biorefinery concept, fruits residues were previously subjected to different environment friendly extractions to obtain their high added value contents, and afterwards, wastes from these processes were upgraded for bioethanol and/or biomethane production. In this work, bioactive compounds were extracted from selected fruits by-products. Characterization of antioxidant capacity and different vitamins were carried out. The extraction of these compounds was made by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and Spray-Drying technology (SD). According to bioethanol production, a compositional analysis of the wastes was done. It has been proven that concentrations of soluble sugars of fruits ca increase 30 -100% by enzymatic hydrolysis depending on the fruit increasing considerably bioethanol yields. According to biogas production, methanogenic potential varies between 250 and 300 Nm3/tVS for fruit wastes. The residues of vegetables ranged from 320 to 550 Nm3/tVS. A test pilot reactor has shown that the co­digestion with other fermentable waste is certainly the best solution to produce biogas energy.
