Maritime glaciers in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau (SETP) are particularly sensitive to changes in climate, and their changes directly and severely affect regional water security and glacier-related hazards. Given their large societal importance, a better understanding of the mass balance of maritime glaciers in the SETP, a key variable for characterizing the state of glacier health, is of great scientific interest. In this review, we synthesize in situ, satellite-based observations and simulations that present an overall accelerating negative mass balance of maritime glaciers in the SETP in recent decades. We hereby highlight a significant spatiotemporal difference in the mass balance of maritime glaciers across the SETP and investigate the drivers of the accelerated mass loss of these glaciers in recent years. We find that accelerated glacier mass loss agrees with the variabilities in temperatures rising and precipitation decreasing at regional scales, as well as the spatial patterns of widespread melt hotspots (e.g., thin debris, ice cliffs, supraglacial ponds, and surface streams), the expansion of glacial lakes, enlarged ice crevasses, and frequent ice avalanches. Finally, the challenges of the mass balance study of maritime glaciers and future perspectives are proposed. Our review confirms the urgent need to improve the existing glacier inventory and establish comprehensive monitoring networks in data-scarce glacierized catchments, and it suggests paying particular attention to the development of glacier mass-balance models that coupe multiple physical processes at different interfaces to predict the status of maritime glaciers and their responses to climate change. This study can inform the sustainable management of water resources and the assessment of socio-economic vulnerability due to glacier-related hazards in the SETP and its surroundings in the context of marked atmospheric warming. Glacier inventories serve as critical baseline data for understanding the impacts of climate change on glaciers. The present study maps the outlines of glaciers in the Chandra-Bhaga Basin (western Himalaya) for the years 1993, 2000, 2010, and 2019 using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM), and Operational Land Imager (OLI) datasets. A total of 251 glaciers, each having an area above 0.5 km2, were identified, which include 216 clean-ice and 35 debris-covered glaciers. Area changes are estimated for three periods: 1993–2000, 2000–2010, and 2010–2019. The total glacierized area was 996 ± 62 km2 in 1993, which decreased to 973 ± 70 km2 in 2019. The mean rate of glacier area loss was higher in the recent decade (2010–2019), at 0.036 km2, compared to previous decades (0.029 km2 in 2000–2010 and 0.025 km2 in 1993–2000). Supraglacial debris cover changes are also mapped over the period of 1993 and 2019. It is found that the supraglacial debris cover increased by 14.12 ± 2.54 km2 (15.2%) during 1993–2019. Extensive field surveys on Chhota Shigri, Panchi II, Patsio, Hamtah, Mulkila, and Yoche Lungpa glaciers were carried out to validate the glacier outlines and supraglacial debris cover estimated using satellite datasets. Controls of various morphological parameters on retreat were also analyzed. More than 13% of the area of the Caucasus glaciers is covered by debris affecting glacier mass balance. Using the Caucasus as example, we introduce a new model configuration that incorporates a physically-based subroutine for the evolution of supraglacial debris into the Global Glacier Evolution Model (GloGEMflow), enabling its application at a regional level. Temporal evolution of debris cover is coupled to glacier dynamics allowing the thickest debris to accumulate in the areas with low velocity. The future evolution of glaciers in the Northern Caucasus is assessed for five Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) and significance of explicitly incorporating debris-cover formulation in regional glacier modeling is evaluated. Under the more aggressive scenarios, glaciers are projected to disappear almost entirely except on Mount Elbrus, which reaches 5,642 m above sea level, by 2,100. Under the SSP1-1.9 scenario, glacier ice volume stabilizes by 2040. This finding stresses the importance of meeting the Paris Climate Agreement goals and limiting climatic warming to 1.5 °C. We compare evolution of glaciers in the Kuban (more humid western Caucasus) and Terek (drier central and eastern Caucasus) basins. In the Kuban basin, ice loss is projected to proceed at nearly double the rate of that in the Terek basin during the first half of the 21st century. While explicit inclusion of debris cover in modeling leads to a less pronounced projected ice loss, the maximum differences in glacier length, area, and volume occur before 2,100, especially for large valley glaciers diminishing towards the end of the century. These projections show that on average, fraction of debris-covered ice will increase while debris cover will become thinner towards the end of the 21st particularly under the more aggressive scenarios. Overall, the explicit consideration of debris cover has a minor effect on the projected regional glacier mass loss but it improves the representation of changes in glacier geometry locally.

Supraglacial debris cover greatly influences glacier dynamics. The present study combines field and remote sensing observations acquired between 2000 and 2020 to understand debris characteristics, area and terminus changes, surface velocity, and mass balance of the Companion Glacier, Central Himalaya, along with a systematic investigation of its supraglacial morphology. According to field observations, the glacier’s lower ablation zone has very coarse and thick debris (1–3 m). Owing to thick debris and consequent protected margins, the glacier could maintain its geometry during the study (2000–2020) showing much less area loss (0.07% ±0.1% a−1) and terminus retreat (1.2 ±1.9 m a−1) than other glaciers in the study region. The average mass balance (−0.12 ±0.1 m w. e. a−1; 2000–2020) was also less negative than the regional trend. Interestingly, in contrast to widespread regional velocity reduction, Companion’s average velocity increased (by 21%) from 6.97 ±3.4 (2000/01) to 8.45 ±2.1 m a−1 (2019/20). Further, to investigate supraglacial morphology, the glacier ablation zone is divided into five zones (Zone-I to V; snout-to-up glacier) based on 100 m altitude bins. Knowledge about glacier extent, dynamics, and characteristics are important for climate change attribution and prediction. Understanding on long-term dynamics and glacier inventory is crucial, particularly for the melt-dominated and latitudinally-diverse western Himalayan glacier basins. In this study, a temporal inventory is prepared for Warwan-sub basin (WSB), utilizing satellite imageries since the 1993 (Landsat TM: 1993; ETM+: 2001, 2008; OLI: 2020) and elevation model (SRTM DEM: 2000). The base inventory was generated for the year 2001 and systematically adjusted to the glacier situations in 1993, 2008, and 2020. Results indicate that in the year 2001, WSB in the western Himalaya included 84 glaciers (> 0.02 km2) covering an area of 187.9 ± 5.8 km2. The mapping (2001) further revealed a supraglacial debris cover of 15% of the glacierized area (28.2 ± 0.9 km2). Overall, the debris cover increased by 6% between 1993 and 2020. Temporal analyses clearly suggest a period of gain in the glacierized area (2001–2008) interspersed by the two phases of decline (1993–2001 and 2008–2020). Results specify a stronger decline in the glacierized area during 1993 to 2001 (197.03 ± 6.1 to 187.9 ± 5.8 km2) than between 2008 and 2020 (188.4 ± 5.9 to 182.8 ± 5.66 km2). Remarkably, the glacierized area increased from 187.9 ± 5.8 to 188.4 ± 5.8 km2 during 2001 to 2008. In view of widespread recession of regional glaciers, the gain in the area between 2001 and 2008 represents a peculiar characteristic of WSB that needs further detailed investigation. Further analyses suggest that low-altitude, east-facing, debris-free, steep-sloped, and small glaciers experienced greater loss in the area than large, debris-covered, north-facing, gently sloped, and high-altitude glaciers. Overall, the study at the sub-basin scale reveals inherent glacier dynamics with periodic increase and decrease in the glacierized area and a notable influence of non-climatic factors in regulating spatial heterogeneity and the rate of glacier changes. Glaciers across the Kashmir Himalayan region are melting at an accelerated pace compared to other regions across the Himalayan arc. This study analyzed the recession patterns of nine glaciers in the Kashmir Himalaya region over 28 years between 1992 and 2020 using satellite images and field measurements. The recession patterns were correlated with debris cover, topographic factors, and ambient black carbon (BC) concentration at glacier sites. HYSPLIT model was used to track the air mass sources at a 7-day time-step from September 1, 2014, to September 28, 2014, over the selected region. All nine glaciers revealed high recession as indicated by changes in the area (average recession: 20.8%) and snout position (~ 14 m a−1). The relative percentage of debris on each glacier varied between ~ 0% (clean glacier) and 43%. Although the investigated glaciers lie in the same climatological regime, their topographical behavior is dissimilar with mean altitude ranging between 4000 and ~ 4700 m asl and the average slope varying from 17 to 24°. All the investigated glaciers are north-facing except G3 (southerly aspect). Our results indicate anomalously high ambient BC concentrations, ranging from 500 to 1364 ng m−3, at the glacier sites, higher than previously studied for glaciers in the Himalayas and neighboring Tibetan Plateau. The backward air-mass trajectory modeling indicated both local and global sources of particulate matter in the study area. A comparative analysis of BC measurements and glacier recession with the studies conducted across high Asia indicated the influence of BC in accelerating the melting of glaciers in the Kashmir region. We examined the two neighbouring Raj Bank and Kosa glaciers of the upper Dhauliganga catchment of Uttarakhand, central Himalaya, India, to assess their variability towards climate change. We performed the analysis of multiple satellite images for the period of 1962–2019 and field-based GNSS data obtained during 2018–2019. Length change, area change, debris cover area, and snowline altitude (SLA) were obtained using that. During the last 57 years (1962–2019), the Raj Bank and Kosa glaciers lost 2.43% (0.32 km2 or 0.006 km2 a−1) and 4.54% (0.45 km2 or 0.008 km2 a−1) area; and for the same time span, their frontal retreat was estimated 639.39 m (11.22 m a−1) and 206.71 m (3.69 m a−1), respectively. The study also depicts that from 1968 to 2019, the Raj Bank glacier shows a significant increase in the debris cover area of 4.41%, while in the Kosa glacier, it was 4.08% only. Between 1968 and 2017, the SLA of the Raj Bank and Kosa glaciers shifted on an average by 82 and 71 m upwards, respectively. Loss in glacial area, enhanced debris cover area, and shift in SLA are the indicators of ice volume loss under the present climatic scenario. Research highlights: Our findings show that both the neighbouring glaciers (Raj Bank and Kosa) not only losing their area and length, but also show an upshifts of the SLAs during the last 57 years (1962-2019). The debris cover areas of the glaciers are also increased during the study period. The retreat rate of the Raj Bank glacier was found higher compared to the Kosa glacier. During the above-mentioned study period, length wise a reduction of 6.2% and 1.8% was observed in the Raj bank and Kosa glaciers, while both the glaciers lost about 2.43% and 4.54% area respectively from 1962 to 2019. Besides global warming, we observed that the role of local topographical factors (i.e. altitude, size, slope, aspect and debris cover) have significant impact on glacial dynamics. The frontal retreat and area loss of both the glaciers suggest negative mass balance in response to the ongoing temperature rise. Global warming is causing glaciers in the Caucasus Mountains and around the world to lose mass at an accelerated pace. As a result of this rapid retreat, significant parts of the glacierized surface area can be covered with debris deposits, often making them indistinguishable from the surrounding land surface by optical remote-sensing systems. Here, we present the DebCovG-carto toolbox to delineate debris-covered and debris-free glacier surfaces from non-glacierized regions. The algorithm uses synthetic aperture radar-derived coherence images and the normalized difference snow index applied to optical satellite data. Validating the remotely-sensed boundaries of Ushba and Chalaati glaciers using field GPS data demonstrates that the use of pairs of Sentinel-1 images (2019) from identical ascending and descending orbits can substantially improve debris-covered glacier surface detection. The DebCovG-carto toolbox leverages multiple orbits to automate the mapping of debris-covered glacier surfaces. This new automatic method offers the possibility of quickly correcting glacier mapping errors caused by the presence of debris and makes automatic mapping of glacierized surfaces considerably faster than the use of other subjective methods.

Large-scale debris cover glacier mapping can be efficiently conducted from high spatial resolution (HSR) remote sensing imagery using object-based image analysis (OBIA), which works on a group of pixels. This paper presents the spectral and spatial capabilities of OBIA to classify multiple glacier cover classes using a multisource approach by integrating multispectral, thermal, and slope information into one workflow. The novel contributions of this study are effective mapping of small yet important geomorphological features, classification of shadow regions without manual corrections, discrimination of snow/ice, ice-mixed debris, and supraglacial debris without using shortwave infrared bands, and an adaptation of an area-weighted error matrix specifically built for assessing OBIA's accuracy. The large-scale glacier cover map is produced with a high overall accuracy of ≈94% (area-weighted error matrix). The proposed OBIA approach also proved to be effective in mapping minor geomorphological features such as small glacial lakes, exposed ice faces, debris cones, rills, and crevasses with individual class accuracies in the range of 96.9–100%. We confirm the portability of our proposed approach by comparing the results with reference glacier inventories and applying it to different sensor data and study areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Debris cover either enhances or reduces glacier melting, thereby modulating glacier response to increasing temperatures. Debris cover variation and glacier recession were investigated on five glaciers; Pensilungpa (PG), Drung Drung (DD), Haskira (HK), Kange (KG) and Hagshu (HG), situated in the topographically and climatically similar zone in the Zanskar Himalaya using satellite data between 2000 and 2020. Analyses reveals that the HK, KG, and HG had a debris-covered area of ∼24% in 2020, while PG and DD had a debris cover of <10%. Comparing PG to the other four glaciers, it had the highest shrinkage (5.7 ± 0.3%) and maximum thinning (1.6 ± 0.6 m a−1). Accordingly, detailed measurements of PG's debris cover thickness, temperature and ablation were conducted for eleven days in August 2020. The results indicated a significant variation of temperature and the highest melting was observed near dirty and thin debris-covered ice surface. Thermal conductivity of 0.9 ± 0.1 Wm−1 K−1 and 1.1 ± 0.1 Wm−1 K−1 was observed at 15 cm and 20 cm debris-depth, respectively. The ablation measurements indicated an average cumulative melting of 21.5 cm during eleven days only. Degree-day factor showed a decreasing trend towards debris cover depth with the highest value (4.8 mm w.e.°C−1 d−1) found for the dirty ice near the glacier surface and the lowest value (0.4 mm w.e.°C−1 d−1) found at 30 cm depth. • We used a tracer-based approach to quantify melt water proportions related to sediment transport at two contrasting Alpine proglacial streams. • Glacier melt was associated with higher bedload concentrations at the debris-covered glacier and much lower concentrations at the clean ice glacier. • Glacier size, presence of debris cover, and substrate were identified as the main drivers of melt dynamics and sediment transport at both glaciers. Subglacial sediments are a large component of the sediment budget of glacierized catchments but insights into the subglacial origin of sediments (bedload, in particular) linked to proglacial runoff dynamics remain scarce. In this study, we use a tracer-based approach to quantify meltwater proportions related to sediment transport at two proglacial streams, draining glaciers (named debris-covered and clean glacier) of different size, aspect and elevation range with contrasting distribution and thickness of debris cover and lithology of the subglacial sediments (i.e., metamorphic vs. sedimentary), in the Sulden/Solda catchment (Italian Alps). Results indicate that the glacier melt component (75 to 80 %) was associated with bedload concentrations of 1 to 10 kg m−3 at the debris-covered glacier and much lower concentrations of 0.01 to 1 kg m−3 at the clean ice glacier. At the seasonal scale, bedload and suspended sediment concentrations at both sites strongly varied with discharge. While daily bedload concentrations varied by up to two orders of magnitude obscured the seasonal development of bedload concentrations at both sites, a clear seasonality for suspended sediment concentrations was found. At the daily scale, the relationship of discharge, bedload, and suspended sediment was more complex because discharge and sediment transport did not always follow the daily variation of air temperature, or similar daily air temperatures resulted in different discharge and sediment transport responses and vice versa. Glacier size, presence of debris cover, and substrate were identified as the main drivers of meltwater dynamics and sediment transport at both glaciers. This study adds further insights into the interplay of meltwater contributions and sediment transport, which are essential to better assess the impact of climate warming on sediment supply in glacierized catchments. Glacierized mountain ranges such as the Himalaya comprise a variety of glacier types, including clean and debris-covered glaciers. Monitoring their behaviour over time requires an assessment of changes in area and elevation along with surface features and geomorphology. In this paper we quantify the surface evolution of glacier systems in the Manaslu region of Nepal over the last five decades using 2013/2019 multi-sensor imagery and elevation data constructed from 1970 declassified Corona imagery and 1970 declassified Corona imagery. We investigate area changes, glacier thickness, geodetic glacier mass balance and surface velocity changes at regional scales and focus on the Ponkar Glacier and Thulagi Glacier and Lake for an in-depth assessment of surface geomorphology and surface feature dynamics (ponds, vegetation and ice cliffs). The time series of surface elevation changes for the lower ablation area of Ponkar Glacier is extended using 2019 UAV-based imagery and field-based ablation rates measured over the period 2016–2019. Glaciers in the Manaslu region experienced a mean area loss of −0.26 ± 0.0001% a−1 between 1970 and 2019. The mean surface lowering was −0.20 ± 0.02 ma−1 over the period 1970 to 2013, corresponding to a regional geodetic mass balance of −0.17 ± 0.03 m w. e.a−1. Overall, debris-covered glaciers had slightly higher thinning rates compared to clean ice glaciers; lake-terminating glaciers had double thinning rates compared to land-terminating glaciers. Individual glacier mass balance was negatively controlled by glacier slope and mean glacier elevation. During the period 1970 to 2013, Ponkar Glacier had a geodetic mass balance of −0.06 ± 0.01 m w. e.a−1, inversely correlated with parts of the central trunk thickening. Between 2013 and 2019 there was a nine-fold increase in the thinning rates over the lower parts of the glacier tongue relative to the period 1970–2013. Ice-surface morphology changes between 1970 and 2019 on Ponkar Glacier include a decrease in ogives and open crevasses, an increase in ice cliffs and ponds and the expansion of the supraglacial debris and ice-surface vegetation. These changes point to reduced ice-dynamic activity and are commensurate with the observed recession and negative glacier mass balance over the last five decades.

The development of seismic fragility functions for buildings generally relies on simplified modelling methods and the use of indirect engineering demand parameters (EDPs) for the determination of collapse or other damage states. The collapse response of real buildings, particularly those that have not been specifically designed for seismic resistance, can often be driven by local failures that may not be captured in simplified models. Furthermore, the use of EDP thresholds to indicate damage states may not be consistent with multiple possible failure modes, which may be triggered by different characteristics of the ground shaking or variations in model parameters. This paper demonstrates the use of non-linear finite element models including explicit progressive collapse simulation for the development of fragility functions. It presents an overview of the method developed and its application to an unreinforced masonry (URM) building typology in the Groningen region of the Netherlands, where induced seismicity risk is currently being evaluated. Multiple index buildings were selected to represent the variations in geometry, material properties, and connection types found within the typology. For each index building, Latin Hypercube sampling was used to generate batches of several hundred realisations of an LS-DYNA time-history analysis, each selecting from a set of 100 hazard-consistent ground motions, and varying material properties and other uncertain variables according to pre-assigned probability distributions. Automation was used in model generation, running analyses and in post-processing to allow the required computation with minimal analyst intervention. The main output from each analysis was a normalised debris cover estimate, which describes the extent of damage observed in the model and is correlated with life safety risk. Regression analyses were carried out directly on threshold levels of debris cover identified building collapse. A valley floor rock glacier in Nautárdalur, eastern Tröllaskagi, northern Iceland, has been investigated since the 1970s. Adjacent valleys are also examined as mountain landsystems. The methodology identifies 'landform elements' (features evident on slopes) on transects that can be identified and mapped from Google Earth imagery. Transects can be compared to show similarities and differences between slopes and valleys and can be used to trace debris and ice/snow flow paths within landsystems. The paper confirms that a glacier ice core is present throughout the Nautárdalur rock glacier. Traces of glacier activity can be found in some neighbouring small valleys but where rock glaciers are not present. Previous field observations, when coupled to current Google Earth imagery, indicate glacier ice formation and deformation over the past 200 years. The quantities and timing of weathered debris from headwall cliffs were sufficient to partly cover small glaciers, thus forming rock glaciers in some, but not all, valleys. The landsystem and transect approach thus indicate glacier origins for the rock glaciers identified. No evidence for 'permafrost creep' in scree slopes that might produce valley-side rock glaciers has been found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we aim to determine the interactions of debris-covered glacier elevation change with some glacial properties (including ice thickness, surface temperature, debris albedo, and supraglacial lakes) over the largest and the most dynamic glacier in Iran, Alamkouh Glacier, using the repeated acquisition of high-resolution remote sensing data and in-situ measurements during 2010–2018. First, we present the elevation change of Alamkouh glacier using digital elevation models (DEMs) derived from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and LiDAR. Results revealed that on the whole glacier area, the LiDAR and UAV datasets achieved a highly consistent estimate of glacier elevation change at − 1.6 ± 0.2 m during 2010 and 2018. On the local scale, datasets revealed a clear constant between moderate elevation change of the two smaller flow units of the glacier (about − 0.48 ± 0.06 and − 0.37 ± 0.04 m) and significantly more negative elevation change in the main flow unit (− 2.5 ± 0.31 m). Results show that the elevation change of the Alamkouh glacier is jointly influenced by supraglacial lakes and the types of glacier cover. The regions where the rates of thinning are greatest coincide with the regions where the supraglacial lakes exist. In contrast, a weak relationship existed between the elevation change and glacier surface albedo and especially ice thickness. We observed a remarkable negative elevation change (− 6.3 m) of areas connected with supraglacial lakes in comparison with clean ice (− 3.1 m) and debris-covered (− 1.71 m) areas. It is proven that the quantity and area of the supraglacial lakes are the key to understanding the melting rate of the debris-covered glacier. Our observations infer the significant insulating function of debris cover on the Alamkouh glacier and highlight the effect of supraglacial lakes on enhancing glacier wastage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Debris-covered glaciers represent potentially significant stores of freshwater in river basins throughout High Mountain Asia (HMA). Direct glacier mass balance measurements are extremely difficult to maintain on debris-covered glaciers, and optical remote sensing techniques to evaluate annual equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) do not work in regions with summer-accumulation type glaciers. Surface elevation and glacier velocity change have been calculated previously for debris-covered glaciers across the region, but the response of debris cover itself to climate change remains an open question. In this research we propose a new metric, i.e. the debris emergence elevation (ZDE), which can be calculated from a combination of optical and thermal imagery and digital elevation data. We quantify ZDE for 975 debris-covered glaciers in HMA over three compositing periods (1985–1999, 2000–2010, and 2013–2017) and compare ZDE against median glacier elevations, modelled ELAs, and observed rates of both mass change and glacier velocity change. Calculated values of ZDE for individual glaciers are broadly similar to both median glacier elevations and modelled ELAs, but slightly lower than both. Across the HMA region, the average value of ZDE increased by 70 +/− 126 m over the study period, or 2.7 +/− 4.1 m/yr. Increases in ZDE correspond with negative mass balance rates and decreases in glacier velocity, while glaciers and regions that show mass gains and increases in glacier velocity experienced decreases in ZDE. Regional patterns of ZDE, glacier mass balance, and glacier velocities are strongly correlated, which indicates continued overall increases in ZDEE and expansion of debris-covered areas as glaciers continue to lose mass. Our results suggest that ZDE is a useful metric to examine regional debris-covered glacier changes over decadal time scales, and could potentially be used to reconstruct relative mass and ELA changes on debris-covered glaciers using historical imagery or reconstructed debris cover extents.

It can easily be expected that debris-covered glaciers show a different response on external forcing compared to clean-surface glaciers. The supra-glacial debris cover acts as an additional transfer layer for the energy exchange between atmosphere and ice. The related glacier reaction is the integral of local effects, which changes strongly between enhanced melt for thin debris layers and considerably reduced melt for thicker debris. Therefore, a realistic feedback study can only be performed, if both the ice flow and the debris-influenced melt is treated with a high degree of detail. We couple a full Stokes representation of ice dynamics and the most complete description of energy transfer through the debris layer, in order to describe the long-term glacier reaction in the coupled system. With this setup, we can show that steady-state conditions are highly unlikely for glaciers, in case debris is not unloaded from the surface. For continuous and complete debris removal from the lowermost glacier tongue, however, a balance of the debris budget and the glacier conditions are possible. Depending on displacement and removal processes, our results demonstrate that debris-covered glaciers have an inherent tendency to switch to an oscillating state. Then, glacier mass balance and debris balance are out of phase, such that glacier advance periods end with the separation of the heavily debris-loaded lowermost glacier tongue, at time scales of decades to centuries. As these oscillations are inherent and happen without any variations in climatic forcing, it is difficult to interpret modern observations on the fluctuation of debris-covered glaciers on the basis of a changing climate only.

Glaciers in Switzerland are shrinking rapidly in response to ongoing climate change. Repeated glacier inventories are key to monitor such changes at the regional scale. Here we present the new Swiss Glacier Inventory 2016 (SGI2016) that has been acquired based on sub-meter resolution aerial imagery and digital elevation models, bringing together topographical and glaciological approaches and knowledge. We define the process, workflow and required glaciological adaptations to compile a highly detailed inventory based on the digital Swiss Topographic Landscape model. The SGI2016 provides glacier outlines (areas), supraglacial debris cover and ice divides for all Swiss glaciers referring to the years 2013–2018. The SGI2016 maps 1,400 individual glacier entities with a total surface area of 961 ± 22 km2, whereof 11% (104 km2) are debris-covered. It constitutes the so far most detailed cartographic representation of glacier extent in Switzerland. Interpretation in the context of topographic parameters indicates that glaciers with moderate inclination and low median elevation tend to have highest fractions of supraglacial debris. Glacier-specific area changes since 1973 show the largest relative changes for small and low-elevation glaciers. The analysis further indicates a tendency for glaciers with a high share of supraglacial debris to show larger relative area changes. Between 1973 and 2016, an area change rate of –0.6% a−1 is found. Based on operational data sets and the presented methodology, the Swiss Glacier Inventory will be updated in 6-yr time intervals, leading to a high consistency in future glacier change assessments.

Debris-covered glaciers, especially in high-mountain Asia, have received increased attention in recent years. So far, few field-based observations of distributed mass loss exist and both the properties of the debris layer as well as the atmospheric drivers of melt below debris remain poorly understood. Using multi-year observations of on-glacier atmospheric data, debris properties and spatial surface elevation changes from repeat flights with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), we quantify the necessary variables to compute melt for the Lirung Glacier in the Himalaya. By applying an energy balance model we reproduce observed mass loss during one monsoon season in 2013. We show that melt is especially sensitive to thermal conductivity and thickness of debris. Our observations show that previously used values in literature for the thermal conductivity through debris are valid but variability in space on a single glacier remains high. We also present a simple melt model, which is calibrated based on the results of energy balance model, that is only dependent on air temperature and debris thickness and is therefore applicable for larger scale studies. The adverse environmental impacts on mangrove ecosystems due to anthropogenic marine debris contamination have attracted public attention not only in Sri Lanka but worldwide. Therefore, quantification of marine debris in sensitive ecosystems like mangroves is critical to assess the impacts on ecosystem vitality and services. We conducted this study to assess the abundance and density of marine debris in Negombo lagoon, Western Province, Sri Lanka. We selected two sites (n = 2) using the purposive sampling technique. Marine debris cover and concentration were calculated to explore the extent of pollution from marine debris. The findings revealed that 9.83 ± 1.05 % of the substrate of the mangrove ecosystem is covered by debris. Nine types of marine debris were recorded, and a higher abundance belonged to single-use plastic items. A significantly higher debris cover was found in Kadolkele (18.80 ± 1.74 %, n = 120) than in Molekadolwetiya (0.85 ± 0.03 %, n = 120) (One-way ANOVA, p < 0.05). The study indicated that the mangroves in lagoon are highly polluted with marine debris and act as "litter catchers." Correlation coefficient analysis was used to find the impact of debris cover on physical damage to roots, seedlings, and undergrowth vegetation. Correlation analysis revealed that physical damage to seedlings and branches/barks have a positive correlation with debris cover. Large-scale debris cover glacier mapping can be efficiently conducted from high spatial resolution (HSR) remote sensing imagery using object-based image analysis (OBIA), which works on a group of pixels. This paper presents the spectral and spatial capabilities of OBIA to classify multiple glacier cover classes using a multisource approach by integrating multispectral, thermal, and slope information into one workflow. The novel contributions of this study are effective mapping of small yet important geomorphological features, classification of shadow regions without manual corrections, discrimination of snow/ice, ice-mixed debris, and supraglacial debris without using shortwave infrared bands, and an adaptation of an area-weighted error matrix specifically built for assessing OBIA’s accuracy. The large-scale glacier cover map is produced with a high overall accuracy of ≈94% (area-weighted error matrix). The proposed OBIA approach also proved to be effective in mapping minor geomorphological features such as small glacial lakes, exposed ice faces, debris cones, rills, and crevasses with individual class accuracies in the range of 96.9–100%. We confirm the portability of our proposed approach by comparing the results with reference glacier inventories and applying it to different sensor data and study areas.

Snout monitoring of the Gangotri glacier (Uttarakhand, India) during the ablation season (May to September) in years 2005 and 2015 by using rapid static and kinematic GPS survey reveals that the retreating rate has been comparatively more declined than shown by the earlier studies. Our study is based on the individual measurement by the remote sensing, added by the ground observations by using Differential global positioning system (DGPS) to determine the precise recession rate of the glacier at sub-centimeter level of accuracy. The GPS dataset show that the total average retreat along the snout has been 102.57 ± 0.05 m from 2005 to 2015 with an average rate as 10.26 ± 0.05 m/yr. Additionally, the shift in snout position was also measured through multi-temporal satellite data from 1989 to 2016. The results indicate that the Gangotri glacier snout has retreated by 585.62 ± 38.30 m during this period with an average retreat of 26.75 ± 4.36 m/yr from 1989 to 1999, 21.58 ± 3.77 m/yr from 1999 to 2009 and 14.60 ± 4.81 m/yr from 2009 to 2016. Such a decline in retreat is further confirmed by the satellite data set. A close examination of meltwater discharge and retreating rate (r2 = 0.95) show that both parameters are strongly correlated. Therefore, we suggest that a consistent decrease in meltwater discharge from 1999 to 2015 is in agreement with decreasing trend of retreating rate during the recent years. To determine the possible causes of decreased retreating rate, a relationship between debris thickness and melt rate was also established by ablation stakes. Further, we infer that the declining trend in the glacier retreat is not only controlled by prevailing weather conditions (rainfall and air temperature) but is also governed by increased debris cover on the glacier surface which prevents the ice to melt. The present study remotely investigates multiple parameters of 25 well-distributed glaciers in the western Himalaya (WH) for ~1990–2015 period to understand their state. Glacier changes for 1990–2000 (pre-2000) and 2000–2015 (post-2000) were analysed separately to assess the shift in glacier dynamics. Results reveal a clear glacier terminus retreat (13.4 ± 2.1 m/y), deglaciation (0.2 ± 0.1%/y), surface velocity slowdown (21%) and increase in number of glacial lakes (28 to 38) as well their area (5%/y) during 1990–2015. Notably, average terminus retreat and deglaciation rates were reduced post-2000 (retreat: 12.5 ± 3.2 m/y; deglaciation: 0.1 ± 0.1%/y) compared to pre-2000 (retreat: 15.3 ± 6.8 m/y; deglaciation: 0.2 ± 0.2%/y). Further, the average surface velocity was found to be increasing (0.9%/y) over 1990–2000. This can be linked with suggested less negative or slightly balanced condition of the WH glaciers over 1990s by previous studies. Present study also finds low downwasting during pre-2000 (−0.24 ± 0.14 m/y). Post-2000, studied glaciers downwasted (−0.50 ± 0.06 m/y) and slowed down (2%/y) significantly showing a decadal time lag in geometrical adjustment. Supraglacial debris, largely influenced by slope characteristics, increased with a uniform rate of 0.9%/y during pre- and post-2000 periods. Systematic analysis of interlinkages among various glacier parameters reveals a large interdependency. Further, presence of debris cover and pro- and supra-glacial lakes modify the glacier response to a great extent. An increasing number of satellite platforms provide daily images of the Earth’s surface that can be used in quantitative monitoring applications. However, their cost and the need for specific processing software make such products not often suitable for rapid mapping and deformation tracking. Google Earth images have been used in a number of mapping applications and, due to their free and rapid accessibility, they have contributed to partially overcome this issue. However, their potential in Earth’s surface displacement tracking has not yet been explored. In this paper, that aspect is analyzed providing a specific procedure and related MATLAB™ code to derive displacement field maps using digital image correlation of successive Google Earth images. The suitability of the procedure and the potential of such images are demonstrated here through their application to two relevant case histories, namely the Slumgullion landslide in Colorado and the Miage debris-covered glacier in Italy. Result validation suggests the effectiveness of the proposed procedure in deriving Earth’s surface displacement data from Google Earth images.

Meltwater from the glaciers in High Mountain Asia plays a critical role in water availability and food security in central and southern Asia. However, observations of glacier ablation and accumulation rates are limited in spatial and temporal scale due to the challenges that are associated with fieldwork at the remote, high-altitude settings of these glaciers. Here, using a remote-sensing-based mass-continuity approach, we compute regional-scale surface mass balance of glaciers in five key regions across High Mountain Asia. After accounting for the role of ice flow, we find distinctively different altitudinal surface-mass-balance gradients between heavily debris-covered and relatively debris-free areas. In the region surrounding Mount Everest, where debris coverage is the most extensive, our results show a reversed mean surface-mass-balance gradient of −0.21 ± 0.18 m w.e. a−1 (100 m)−1 on the low-elevation portions of glaciers, switching to a positive mean gradient of 1.21 ± 0.41 m w.e. a−1 (100 m)−1 above an average elevation of 5520 ± 50 m. Meanwhile, in West Nepal, where the debris coverage is minimal, we find a continuously positive mean gradient of 1.18 ± 0.40 m w.e. a−1 (100 m)−1. Equilibrium line altitude estimates, which are derived from our surface-mass-balance gradients, display a strong regional gradient, increasing from northwest (4490 ± 140 m) to southeast (5690 ± 130 m). Overall, our findings emphasise the importance of separating signals of surface mass balance and ice dynamics, in order to constrain better their contribution towards the ice thinning that is being observed across High Mountain Asia.

Abstract: Debris surface temperature is a function of debris characteristics and energy fluxes at the debris surface. However, spatial and temporal variability in debris surface temperature, and the debris properties that control it, are poorly constrained. Here, near‐surface debris temperature (Ts) is reported for 16 sites across the lower elevations of Khumbu Glacier, Nepal Himalaya, for the 2014 monsoon season. The debris layer at all sites was ≥1 m thick. We confirm the occurrence of temporal and spatial variability in Ts over a 67‐day period and investigate its controls. Ts was found to exhibit marked temporal fluctuations on diurnal, short‐term (1–8 days) and seasonal timescales. Over the study period, two distinct diurnal patterns in Ts were identified that varied in timing, daily amplitude and maximum temperature; days in the latter half of the study period (after Day of Year 176) exhibited a lower diurnal amplitude (mean = 23°C) and reduced maximum temperatures. Days with lower amplitude and minimum Ts were concurrent with periods of increased seasonal variability in on‐glacier air temperature and incoming shortwave radiation, with the increased frequency of these periods attributed to increasing cloud cover as the monsoon progressed. Spatial variability in Ts was manifested in variability of diurnal amplitude and maximum Ts of 7°C to 47°C between sites. Local slope, debris clast size and lithology were identified as the most important drivers of spatial variability in Ts, with inclusion of these three variables in the stepwise general linear models resulting in R2 ≥0.89 for six out of the seven sites. The complexity of surface energy fluxes and their influence on Ts highlight that assuming a simplified relationship between air temperature and debris surface temperature in glacier melt models, and a direct relationship between debris surface temperature and debris thickness for calculating supraglacial debris thickness, should be undertaken with caution. © 2018 The Authors. Supraglacial ice cliffs exist on debris-covered glaciers worldwide, but despite their importance as melt hot spots, their life cycle is little understood. Early field observations had advanced a hypothesis of survival of north-facing and disappearance of south-facing cliffs, which is central for predicting the contribution of cliffs to total glacier mass losses. Their role as windows of energy transfer suggests they may explain the anomalously high mass losses of debris-covered glaciers in High Mountain Asia (HMA) despite the insulating debris, currently at the center of a debated controversy. We use a 3D model of cliff evolution coupled to very high-resolution topographic data to demonstrate that ice cliffs facing south (in the Northern Hemisphere) disappear within a few months due to enhanced solar radiation receipts and that aspect is the key control on cliffs evolution. We reproduce continuous flattening of south-facing cliffs, a result of their vertical gradient of incoming solar radiation and sky view factor. Our results establish that only north-facing cliffs are recurrent features and thus stable contributors to the melting of debris-covered glaciers. Satellite observations and mass balance modeling confirms that few south-facing cliffs of small size exist on the glaciers of Langtang, and their contribution to the glacier volume losses is very small (~1%). This has major implications for the mass balance of HMA debris-covered glaciers as it provides the basis for new parameterizations of cliff evolution and distribution to constrain volume losses in a region where glaciers are highly relevant as water sources for millions of people. Qingbingtan Glacier No. 72 in Mt. Tomor region is a cirque-valley glacier with complex topography and debris-covered areas. In-situ measurements from 2008 to 2013 revealed that both ice temperature and velocity are obviously higher than in other glaciers in this region. Comparison of digitized earlier topographic maps with recent satellite images indicates that the glacier had been retreating and thinning during the past decades. Between 1964 and 2008, its terminus retreat and area reduction was 41.16 ± 0.6 m a − 1 and 0.034 ± 0.030 × 10 − 3 km 2 a − 1 , respectively, and thickness decreased at an average rate of 0.22 ± 0.14 m a − 1 in the ablation area. The strongest ablation and terminus retreat occurred at the end of the last century and the beginning of this century rather than in most recent years, seeming to be related to increase in the debris coverage and thickness. The debris-covered area was 0.87 km 2 , of which 0.66 km 2 is thicker than the critical thickness of 4 cm, and thus the debris cover on this glacier has an alleviating ablation effect overall. Based on a comprehensive analysis of climate change, glacier response delay, glacial topographic features and debris cover influence, the glacier is likely to continue to retreat in the upcoming decades, yet with a gradually decreasing speed. The present study provides an insight into the heterogeneous response of 45 glaciers in the Lidder and Sindh river basins, western Himalaya, and explores the linkages between glacier facies variability and changing glacier parameters. Results show that the region has undergone an overall deglaciation of ~ 12 ± 1.5% (11.9 ± 1.4 km²) from 1996 to 2014. Fluctuations in the temperature and precipitation patterns seem to be the primary factor controlling the changes in glacier dimensions (R² > 0.82 in all cases). Glacier facies changes suggest depletion in snow-ice cover (~ 18 ± 2.3%) and an increase in ice-mixed debris (~ 4 ± 1.4%), supraglacial debris (~ 6 ± 1.5%), and periglacial debris (~ 17 ± 1.2%). These glacier facies transitions are possibly the result of ice-melting; however, its relative rate and elevation decides the nature of facies conversion. An increase in the proportion of supraglacial debris has led to the conversion of 11 clean glaciers to sparsely debris-covered glaciers and 5 sparsely debris-covered glaciers to debris-covered glaciers. The size of the glaciers greatly influenced the rate of conversion of glaciers, and glaciers < 2 km² dominated the others in this regard. The small glaciers also experienced maximum shrinkage. Further, the glaciers with varying supraglacial debris cover respond differently, as sparsely debris-covered glaciers exhibit the highest rates of retreat (25 ± 7.3 m/y), followed by clean (23.7 ± 7.3 m/y) and debris-covered glaciers (13.1 ± 7.3 m/y). Thus, the findings of this work clearly show that the climate change driven dimensional changes of glaciers and variations in the spatial distribution of glacier facies have strong mutual control on each other. A study has been carried out in part of Chenab basin, Himalaya to understand the relationship between glacio-morphological factors and change in glacial area. Initially change in areal extent of glaciers was derived for two time frames (1962-2001/02 and 2001/02-2010/11). The study comprised of 324 glaciers for the monitoring period of 1962-2001/02 for, which 11% loss in glacial area was observed. Two hundred and thirty-eight glaciers were further monitored between 2001/02 and 2010/11. These glaciers showed an area loss of 1.1%. The annual deglaciation has been found to be higher during the period of 1962-2001/02 compared to 2001/02-2010/11. The spatial and temporal variability in deglaciation was also addressed using glacio-morphic parameters. Area, length, percentage of debris cover, and various elevation parameters of glaciers were observed to have significant controls on relationships to the rate of glacial shrinkage. Larger-area and longer glaciers show a lower percentage of retreat than smaller and shorter ones. Moreover, glaciers located at lower altitudes and having gentle slopes show more area retreat. The results of area retreat in debris covered and debris free glaciers supports that the glaciers covered by debris retard ice melting at some extent. 158 glaciers were observed having no debris cover, and these exhibit 14% of loss in surface area. In glaciers having 40% debris cover, 8% of deglaciation was observed. The glaciers located below equilibrium line altitude (ELA) have experienced 4.6% of deglaciation for the time frame 2001/02-2010/11 whereas it was found to be 1.1% for the glaciers occurring above ELA. Himalayan glacier changes in the context of global climate change have attracted worldwide attention due to their profound cryo-hydrological ramifications. However, an integrated understanding of the debris-free and debris-covered glacier evolution and its interaction with glacial lake is still lacking. Using one case study in the Gyirong River Basin located in the central Himalayas, this paper applied archival Landsat imagery and an automated mapping method to understand how glaciers and glacial lakes interactively evolved between 1988 and 2015. Our analyses identified 467 glaciers in 1988, containing 435 debris-free and 32 debris-covered glaciers, with a total area of 614.09 ± 36.69 km2. These glaciers decreased by 16.45% in area from 1988 to 2015, with an accelerated retreat rate after 1994. Debris-free glaciers retreated faster than debris-covered glaciers. As a result of glacial downwasting, supraglacial debris coverage expanded upward by 17.79 km2 (24.44%). Concurrent with glacial retreat, glacial lakes increased in both number (+41) and area (+54.11%). Glacier-connected lakes likely accelerated the glacial retreat via thermal energy transmission and contributed to over 15% of the area loss in their connected glaciers. On the other hand, significant glacial retreats led to disconnections from their proglacial lakes, which appeared to stabilize the lake areas. Continuous expansions in the lakes connected with debris-covered glaciers, therefore, need additional attention due to their potential outbursts. In comparison with precipitation variation, temperature increase was the primary driver of such glacier and glacial lake changes. In addition, debris coverage, size, altitude, and connectivity with glacial lakes also affected the degree of glacial changes and resulted in the spatial heterogeneity of glacial wastage across the Gyirong River Basin.

The reconstruction of glacio-hydrological records for the data deficient Himalayan catchments is needed in order to study the past and future water availability. The study provides outcomes of a glacio-hydrological model based on the degree-day approach. The model simulates the discharge and mass balance for glacierised Shaune Garang catchment. The degree-day factors for different land covers, used in the model, were estimated using daily stake measurements on Shaune Garang glacier and they were found to be varying between 2.6 ± 0.4 and 9.3 ± 0.3 mm °Cday. The model is validated using observed discharge during ablation season of 2014 with coefficient of determination (R) 0.90 and root mean square error (RMSE) 1.05 m sec. The model is used to simulate discharge from 1985 to 2008 and mass balance from 2001 to 2008. The model results show significant contribution of seasonal snow and ice melt in total discharge of the catchment, especially during summer. We observe the maximum discharge in July having maximum contribution from snow and ice melt. The annual melt season discharge shows following a decreasing trend in the simulation period. The reconstructed mass balance shows mass loss of 0.89 m we per year between 2001 and 2008 with slight mass gain during 2000/01 and 2004/05 hydrological years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As part of the on-going annual mass balance measurements on Batal and Sutri Dhaka glaciers, observations were made during peak ablation (August-September) season in 2013 to understand the response of debris covered and clean-ice (debris free) glacier surface to melting processes. Though, both the Batal and Sutri Dhaka glaciers have almost similar geographical disposition, Batal shows extensive debris cover (90% of the ablation area), while the latter is free from debris (only 5% of the ablation area). The thickness of debris in Batal glacier is inversely proportional to altitude, whereas Sutri Dhaka mostly experienced debris-free zone except snout area. Observation revealed that the vertical gradient of ablation rate in ablation area is contrastingly opposite in these two glaciers, reflecting significant control of debris thickness and their distribution over glacier surface on the ablation rates. While different thickness (2-100 cm) of debris have attenuated melting rates up to 70% of total melting, debris cover of <2 cm thickness has accelerated melting up to 10% of the total melting. Estimated melt ratio reveals that about 90% of the ablation area has experienced inhibited melting in Batal glacier, whereas only less than 5% ablation area of Sutri Dhaka has undergone inhibited melting. Comparison of topographical maps of 1962 with successive satellite images of the area demonstrates a terminus retreat of 373 ± 33.5 m and 579 ± 33.5 m for Batal and Sutri Dhaka glaciers for the period 1962-2013, respectively.
