Abstract

In this work, the local electrochemical activity of the zones coupled by Friction Stir Welding (FSW) of an Al-Cu-Li alloy was studied and the results were correlated to the microstructural characteristics of each zone. Electrochemical studies were carried out in the zones affected by welding using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and scanning electrochemical techniques (namely, SECM - Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy and LEIS - Local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). The results showed that the welding joint (WJ) is predominantly cathodic relatively to the heat affected zones (HAZ). The HAZ was always anodic and showed the highest electrochemical activities among the tested ones. The high electrochemical activity of the HAZ was associated with the effect of galvanic coupling between the cathodic region (WJ) and the anodic region (HAZ). In addition, the advancing side (AS) presented increased electrochemical activity compared to the retreating one (RS).

Abstract

With the theory of general relativity, Einstein abolished the interpretation of gravitation as a force and associated it to the curvature of spacetime. Tensorial calculus and differential geometry are the mathematical resources necessary to study the spacetime manifold in the context of Einstein's theory. In 1961, Tullio Regge published a work on which he uses the old idea of triangulation of surfaces aiming the description of curvature, and, therefore, gravitation, through the use of discrete calculus. Abstract

In this work, optimization strategies employing a standard heuristic free-derivative algorithm combined with a first-order gradient approach are used to maximize the flutter or divergence airspeed, using the fibre material orientations as design variables. The aeroelastic stability analysis calculations are performed by a classical PK method. The finite element method is used to obtain the structural modes and frequencies and the unsteady aerodynamic influence coefficient matrices are obtained with a doublet-lattice model. Numerical studies are performed with a complex 3D model that includes curved surfaces and internal elements such as spars and ribs. The main goal of the article is to use the heuristic part with a small number of parameters, to reduce the design space and provide an efficient initial guess for the gradient search, so that the optimization complexity is substantially reduced. Abstract

We investigate the influence of massive photons on the evolution of the expanding universe. Two particular models for generalized electrodynamics are considered, namely de Broglie-Proca and Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics. We obtain the equation of state (EOS) $P=P(\varepsilon)$ for each case using dispersion relations derived from both theories. The EOS are inputted into the Friedmann equations of a homogeneous and isotropic space-time to determine the cosmic scale factor $a(t)$. It is shown that the photon non-null mass does not significantly alter the result $a\propto t^{1/2}$ valid for a massless photon gas; this is true either in de Broglie-Proca's case (where the photon mass $m$ is extremely small) or in Bopp-Podolsky theory (for which $m$ is extremely large)., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; v2 matches the published version

Abstract

The viewing geometry of the polar CP Tuc that better explains its optical and X-ray light curves is controversial. Previous modelling of white-light polarimetric data considered the partial self-eclipse of an extended inhomogeneous emitting region. Alternatively, phase-dependent absorption has been used to reproduce the X-ray data. This paper presents new optical polarimetric data of CP Tuc and a model that consistently explains its optical and X-ray data. The model was based on an extension of the CYCLOPS code that added X-ray bremsstrahlung emission and pre-shock region absorption to the original version, which only accounted for cyclotron emission. The new code creates the possibility of simultaneous optical and X-ray fitting. We show that self-eclipse and absorption data have distinct signatures on the X-ray spectra. Although we were able to reasonably fit the CP Tuc optical data to cases of absorption and self-eclipse, we were only able to reproduce the X-ray orbital modulation after considering the absorption in the pre-shock region. Specifically, we were unable to reproduce the X-ray observations in the self-eclipse case. Abstract

We consider cosmological solution for Einstein gravity with massive fermions with a four-fermion coupling, which emerges from the Holst action and is related to the Barbero-Immirzi (BI) parameter. This gravitational action is an important object of investigation in a non-perturbative formalism of quantum gravity. We study the equation of motion for for the Dirac field within the standard Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric. Finally, we show the theory with BI parameter and minimally coupling Dirac field, in the zero mass limit, is equivalent to an additional term which looks like a perfect fluid with the equation of state \ $p = w\rho$, with $w = 1$ which is independent of the BI parameter. The existence of mass imposes a variable $w$, which creates either an inflationary phase with $w=-1$, or assumes an ultra hard equation of states $w = 1$ for very early universe. Abstract

CP Tuc (AX J2315-592) is a polar for which two accretion geometries have been put forward. They differ in the location of the accretion column on the white-dwarf surface. In this study, we present new multiband optical photometric and polarimetric data to study the post-shock position. These data are used as input for CYCLOPS, our new code for modeling the cyclotron emission from post-shock regions of polars. CYCLOPS has a full 3-D treatment of the radiative transfer and is a powerful tool to study the physical properties of the emitting region. We find reasonable fits for the optical data of CP Tuc in both scenarios. Abstract

ObjectivesTo determine protease mutations that develop at viral failure for protease inhibitor (PI)-naive patients on a regimen containing the PI atazanavir.MethodsResistance tests on patients failing atazanavir, conducted as part of routine clinical care in a multicentre observational study, were randomly matched by subtype to resistance tests from PI-naive controls to account for natural polymorphisms. Mutations from the consensus B sequence across the protease region were analysed for association and defined using the IAS-USA 2011 classification list.ResultsFour hundred and five of 2528 (16%) patients failed therapy containing atazanavir as a first PI over a median (IQR) follow-up of 1.76 (0.84-3.15) years and 322 resistance tests were available for analysis. Recognized major atazanavir mutations were found in six atazanavir-experienced patients (P < 0.001), including I50L and N88S. The minor mutations most strongly associated with atazanavir experience were M36I, M46I, F53L, A71V, V82T and I85V (P < 0.05). Multiple novel mutations, I15S, L19T, K43T, L63P/V, K70Q, V77I and L89I/T/V, were also associated with atazanavir experience.ConclusionsViral failure on atazanavir-containing regimens was not common and major resistance mutations were rare, suggesting that adherence may be a major contributor to viral failure. Novel mutations were described that have not been previously documented.

Abstract

The unbridled increase in the generation of solid waste, especially electronic waste, due to its dangerousness, has been worrying the world. The Judiciary, based on shared responsibility, has already been promoting some sustainable practices to improve the environment and society as a whole. The aim of this study is to contribute, with possible improvements in the Solid Waste Technological Route (Toners) in the Thomaz aquino Forum, an integral unit of the Judiciary of the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, located in the central area of the city of Recife. The methodology was carried out through a bibliographic survey, including qualitative and quantitative research, by data collection, through questionnaires, about the management of the Toner Technological Route of 14 offices, located in the Thomaz Aquino Forum, in order to propose more effective adjustments and adjustments, in addition to expanding information on the importance of knowledge and participation of all in sustainable actions. The study is relevant, given the importance of adequate solid waste management, which make it possible to contribute effectively to the protection of the environment in order to avoid or minimize environmental and institutional degradation, to provide subsidies to propose new actions in updating the next Sustainable Logistics Plan (PLS), in order to achieve its goals and objectives. It was concluded that the Court, although it works positively in the realization of sustainable practices, still demonstrates fragility of some measures from the simplest measures such as information and guidance to the effective improvements, especially in the management of electronic waste and its technological routes.

Abstract

In this work, we analyse the temperature fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background radiation observed by COBE and show that the distribution can be fitted by a fractal distribution with a fractal dimension $ D= 1.43 \pm 0.07 $. This value is in close agreement with the fractal dimension obtained by Coleman and Pietronero (1992) and Luo and Schramm (1992) from galaxy-galaxy and cluster-cluster correlations up to $ \sim 100 h^{-1} Mpc$. The fact that the observed temperature fluctuations correspond to scales much larger than $ 100 h^{-1} Mpc$ and are signatures of the primordial density fluctuations at the recombination layer suggests that the structure of the matter at the early universe was already fractal and thus non-homogeneous on those scales. Abstract

This paper addresses the urgent need to meet increasing energy demand while avoiding greenhouse gas emissions by improving energy efficiency. One significant challenge is the energy losses that occur during gas pressure reduction at city gates in natural gas distribution systems. To tackle this issue, this study proposes installing pressure reduction turbines (PRTs) parallel to existing reduction valves, which can generate electricity and enhance system efficiency. This research mainly focuses on Brazil’s natural gas supply, where the potential for installing PRTs is evaluated. The methodology analyzes the country’s distribution network and estimates the electricity generation capacity achievable from PRTs. The results indicate a potential power generation of 66 MW, capable of avoiding the emission of 235,800 tons of CO2 annually and generating 333 GWh/year of electricity, all at a LCOE of $27/MW. These contribute to the environment using the energy efficiency achieved through the installation of PRTs, consequently, Brazil can help to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

Abstract

The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, 'to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation', or 'are there too many genera in the Boletales?' and even more importantly, 'what should be done with the tremendously diverse 'dark fungal taxa?' There are undeniable differences in mycologists' perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. 44. Anisotropic adaptive mesh procedure for computing very thin hyperbolic shells

Abstract

Abstract: This paper is devoted to the study of the mechanical behavior of thin elastic shells when their relative thickness ε tends to zero. We focus on the case of hyperbolic shells whose middle surface has principal curvatures of opposite signs everywhere. We use the Koiter model to describe the mechanical behavior of the shell. The corresponding system, which depends on the relative thickness ε, is elliptic except at the limit for ε=0 where it is hyperbolic. In a first part, we study theoretically the phenomena of internal layers appearing during the singular perturbation process, when the loading is somewhat singular. These layers have very different structures either they are along or across the asymptotic lines of the middle surface of the shell. Moreover, we may have pseudo-reflections when a part of the boundary is not along an asymptotic line of the surface. In any case, the layers become very thin when ε tends to zero and the displacements inside the layers tends to infinity. In order to have a good description of the singularities of the displacements inside the layers, we propose here to use an anisotropic and adaptive mesh procedure. In a second part, we will present numerical computations performed with such meshes. They enable us to approach accurately the singularities inside the layers predicted by the theory. Finally, we test the behavior of the remeshing procedure when the shell is non-inhibited.

47. Discovery of novel papillomaviruses in the critically endangered Malayan and Chinese pangolins

Abstract

Pangolins are scaly and toothless mammals which are distributed across Africa and Asia. Currently, the Malayan, Chinese and Philippine pangolins are designated as critically endangered species. Although few pangolin viruses have been described, their viromes have received more attention following the discovery that they harbour sarbecoviruses related to SARS-CoV-2. Using large-scale genome mining, we discovered novel lineages of papillomaviruses infecting the Malayan and Chinese pangolins. We were able to assemble three complete circular papillomavirus genomes with an intact coding capacity and five additional L1 genes encoding the major capsid protein. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that seven out of eight L1 sequences formed a monophyletic group which is the sister lineage to the Tupaia belangeri papillomavirus 1, isolated from Yunnan province in China. Additionally, a single L1 sequence assembled from a Chinese pangolin was placed in a clade closer to Alphapapillomavirus and Omegapapillomavirus . Examination of the SRA data from 95 re-sequenced genomes revealed that 49.3% of Malayan pangolins and 50% of Chinese pangolins were positive for papillomavirus reads. Our results indicate that pangolins in South-East Asia are the hosts of diverse and highly prevalent papillomaviruses, and highlight the value of in silico mining of host sequencing data for the discovery of novel viruses.
