Abstract

Geologic reservoirs containing gas hydrate occur beneath permafrost environments and within marine continental slope sediments, representing a potentially vast natural gas source. Numerical simulators provide scientists and engineers with tools for understanding how production efficiency depends on the numerous, interdependent (coupled) processes associated with potential production strategies for these gas hydrate reservoirs. Confidence in the modeling and forecasting abilities of these gas hydrate reservoir simulators (GHRSs) grows with successful comparisons against laboratory and field test results, but such results are rare, particularly in natural settings. The hydrate community recognized another approach to building confidence in the GHRS: comparing simulation results between independently developed and executed computer codes on structured problems specifically tailored to the interdependent processes relevant for gas hydrate-bearing systems. The United States Department of Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory, (DOE/NETL), sponsored the first international gas hydrate code comparison study, IGHCCS1, in the early 2000s. IGHCCS1 focused on coupled thermal and hydrologic processes associated with producing gas hydrates from geologic reservoirs via depressurization and thermal stimulation. Subsequently, GHRSs have advanced to model more complex production technologies and incorporate geomechanical processes into the existing framework of coupled thermal and hydrologic modeling. This paper contributes to the validation of these recent GHRS developments by providing results from a second GHRS code comparison study, IGHCCS2, also sponsored by DOE/NETL. IGHCCS2 includes participants from an international collection of universities, research institutes, industry, national laboratories, and national geologic surveys. Study participants developed a series of five benchmark problems principally involving gas hydrate processes with geomechanical components. The five problems range from simple geometries with analytical solutions to a representation of the world's first offshore production test of methane hydrates, which was conducted with the depressurization method off the coast of Japan. To identify strengths and limitations in the various GHRSs, study participants submitted solutions for the benchmark problems and discussed differing results via teleconferences. The GHRSs evolved over the course of IGHCCS2 as researchers modified their simulators to reflect new insights, lessons learned, and suggested performance enhancements. The five benchmark problems, final sample solutions, and lessons learned that are presented here document the study outcomes and serve as a reference guide for developing and testing gas hydrate reservoir simulators.

7. Coaching SNAs Can Improve Children' Participation in Daily Living Skills: A Quasi-Experimental Pretest-Posttest Design Study

Abstract

Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) serve an essential role to support children with disabilities; thus, they need efficient training. The one-on-one coaching following a workshop was compared with a control group that only received a workshop. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in two of the five public special education schools in Zaragoza (Spain); seventeen paraprofessionals and thirty-seven children participated voluntarily. The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) was administered pre and post-intervention to evaluate changes in the participation of children with disabilities. Questionnaires for assessing competencies and needs were issued for both groups of SNAs, and the kinds of goals and the adaptations required were analysed. The intervention was guided by an occupational therapist (OT). Children in the intervention group showed significant gains in goals identified by assistant and therapist. However, both groups of SNAs indicated they had improved their skills. Through collaboration with OTs, SNAs can implement practices that enhance children' participation in activities of daily living in natural environments. SNAs' training should be carried out according to their real demands and the needs of the children they support.

Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic (hybrid) perovskites are considered promising candidates to replace conventional three-dimensional (3D) perovskites for solar cell applications as they have good resistance against moisture and UV light. However, the use of 2D perovskite is associated with a significant decrease in power efficiency resulting from their low photogenerated charge carrier density and poor charge transport. To improve power efficiency in 2D perovskites, highly crystalline films (near-single-crystal quality) of 2D perovskite need to be synthesized where the alignment of the inorganic perovskite components is controlled to have vertical alignment with respect to the contacts to improve charge transport. In this work, we explored strategies to overcome this limitation by integrating 2D perovskite with single-walled carbon nanotubes or graphene to enable more efficient extraction of charge carriers toward electric contacts. Longer carrier lifetimes were achieved after the incorporation of the carbon nanostructures in the films, and at the cell level, power efficiency increased by 2-fold.

15. Radiocarbon constraints on the glacial ocean circulation and its impact on atmospheric CO2.

Abstract

While the ocean's large-scale overturning circulation is thought to have been significantly different under the climatic conditions of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the exact nature of the glacial circulation and its implications for global carbon cycling continue to be debated. Here we use a global array of ocean-atmosphere radiocarbon disequilibrium estimates to demonstrate a ∼689±53 14C-yr increase in the average residence time of carbon in the deep ocean at the LGM. A predominantly southern-sourced abyssal overturning limb that was more isolated from its shallower northern counterparts is interpreted to have extended from the Southern Ocean, producing a widespread radiocarbon age maximum at mid-depths and depriving the deep ocean of a fast escape route for accumulating respired carbon. While the exact magnitude of the resulting carbon cycle impacts remains to be confirmed, the radiocarbon data suggest an increase in the efficiency of the biological carbon pump that could have accounted for as much as half of the glacial-interglacial CO2 change.

Interest in the development of innovative tracers has prompted the emergence of new nanomaterials with a focus on nuclear imaging and therapeutical applications. Among others, organic nanoparticles are of the highest interest due to their translational potential related to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. Our group has developed a promising new type of biocompatible nanomaterials, sphingomyelin nanoemulsions (SNs). The aim of this study is to explore the potential of SNs for nuclear imaging applications.Methods: Ready-to-label SNs were prepared by a one-step method using lipid derivative chelators and characterized in terms of their physicochemical properties. Stability was assessed under storage and after incubation with human serum. Chelator-functionalized SNs were radiolabeled with 67Ga and 68Ga, and the radiochemical yield (RCY), radiochemical purity (RCP) and radiochemical stability (RCS) were determined. Finally, the biodistribution of 67/68Ga-SNs was evaluated in vivo and ex vivo.Results: Here, we describe a simple and mild one-step method for fast and efficient radiolabeling of SNs with 68Ga and 67Ga radioisotopes. In vivo experiments showed that 67/68Ga-SNs can efficiently and indistinctly be followed up by PET and SPECT. 25. Insights into the abundance, expression and diversity of key denitrification genes in an ecologically managed greenhouse agricultural soil

Abstract

Understanding the bacteria associated with nitrification and denitrification is crucial for comprehending the processes that lead to nitrous oxide emissions in agricultural greenhouse soils. Therefore, it is important to determine their abundance and expression to gain insight into these processes. The aim of this study was to explore the bacterial communities associated with denitrification in a greenhouse agricultural soil amended with crop residues and manure for six years. For this purpose, we proceeded to detect and quantify the genes nirK and nirS and the gene nosZ through clone library construction, sequencing, phylogenetic analysis, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Sequence analysis based on the clone library revealed that many of the nirS or nirK genes detected were not closely related to known denitrifier bacteria, but some of the nosZ sequences were related to the genera such as Pseudomonas, Halomonas, and Marinobacter. Furthermore, the qPCR revealed a high abundance of DNA copies in nirK, 6.08 × 109 ± 1.16 × 109, while nirS and nosZ showed lower values, 9.05 × 106 ± 1.65 × 106 and 8.71 × 106 ± 1.44 × 106, respectively. However, the highest expression rate was observed for nirS (mRNA/DNA ratio = 3.10 × 10− 3), while nirK and nosZ showed 10-fold lower expression rates (4.4 × 10− 4 and 3.5 × 10− 4, respectively). 26. Ecological intensification strategies increase abundance of denitrifying functional genes in a greenhouse agricultural soil

Abstract

Understanding the denitrification process in agriculture is key to preventing nitrogen (N) losses and reducing emissions of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) to the atmosphere. Since the type of fertilization influences this process, in this study we evaluated the comparative effect of conventional (CON) versus ecological intensification (EI) soil management under greenhouse conditions on the abundance and expression of the denitrifying functional genes nitrite reductase (nirK, nirS) and nitrous oxide reductase (nosZ). For this purpose, quantitative PCR (qPCR) was performed in three phenological stages of eggplant (Solanum melongena L var. Telma). The results showed that the addition of organic amendments tripled the copies of nirK DNA, doubled the copies of nosZ DNA and increased the copies of nirS, albeit by 2 %, compared to conventionally managed soils. The abundance of mRNA transcripts also increased for all three genes studied: nirK increased 15-fold, followed by nirS, which tripled its expression, and nosZ, which doubled its expression. Ammonium ion (NH4-N) correlated positively with the three genes analyzed, total organic carbon (TOC) with nirK and nosZ, and pH correlated negatively with nirK and nosZ. Regardless of the type of fertilization (CON or EI), a decreasing trend in gene abundance was observed from the initial growth phase of the crop (t0) until the crop was removed and crop residues incorporated into the soil (t2). The results suggest that the dynamics and composition of the denitrifying community varied in response to the type of fertilization and the phenological stage of the crop. Abstract

Age-related telomere length (TL) variation is relatively well-described for mammals, birds and other model organisms. Nevertheless, it remains largely unknown in ectotherms, especially turtles and tortoises, which are extremely long-lived species with slow or negligible senescence. In this study, we described TL dynamics in wild spur-thighed tortoises (Testudo graeca), one of the chelonian species with the lowest aging rates. By combining cross-sectional (single) and longitudinal (capture–recapture) samplings, we assessed the relationship between TL and individual characteristics (sex, age, individual growth rate, body condition index, presence of shell anomalies). We did not find any association between TL and sex, individual growth rate, or body condition. However, the relationship with age remains uncertain, likely due to the complex dynamics of TL over time. Interestingly, shorter telomeres correlated significantly with shell anomalies, which are usually assumed as a fitness proxy for reptiles. Overall, our results suggest TL as a potential indicator for ontogenetic studies on tortoises, while its utility as a marker of biological age appears limited.

Abstract

We aim to develop and transfer to the wine sector a decision support system (DSS) in the frame of WANEGRAPE4.0 project that, integrated into a geographic information system, helps wine growers in i) selecting the most suitable rootstock given some agroecological conditions and oenological objectives; and ii) managing irrigation and nitrogen fertilization in the most suitable way for the selected rootstock and agroecological conditions. The following goals have been achieved. First, the modular structure and information flow of the DSS has been defined. Second, the main algorithms of the water balance module (DSS core part) have been formulated and the module coded in a spreadsheet. Third, this water balance module has been tested with data from field experiments in several regions of Spain. Fourth, the relationships between grapevine water status and production and harvest quality variables have been established, revealing an always-significant effects of the decrease in water stress on vegetative development, yield, and grape composition. Fifth, the nitrogen fertilizer effects on vine performance has been assessed. Sixth, the effects rootstocks have on 5 parameters of vine production and grape quality for winemaking have been established too by doing another meta-analysis of rootstock trials. Seventh, a rootstock selection module has been defined. The WANUGRAPE4.0 project goes on with the integration of all its modules, their coding in a World Wide Web language and their publication on an Internet portal.

Abstract

The 30 and 44 GHz Back End Modules (BEM) for the Planck Low Frequency Instrument are broadband receivers (20% relative bandwidth) working at room temperature. The signals coming from the Front End Module are amplified, band pass filtered and finally converted to DC by a detector diode. Each receiver has two identical branches following the differential scheme of the Planck radiometers. The BEM design is based on MMIC Low Noise Amplifiers using GaAs P-HEMT devices, microstrip filters and Schottky diode detectors. Their manufacturing development has included elegant breadboard prototypes and finally qualification and flight model units. Electrical, mechanical and environmental tests were carried out for the characterization and verification of the manufactured BEMs. A description of the 30 and 44 GHz Back End Modules of Planck-LFI radiometers is given, with details of the tests done to determine their electrical and environmental performances. The electrical performances of the 30 and 44 GHz Back End Modules: frequency response, effective bandwidth, equivalent noise temperature, 1/f noise and linearity are presented.

Abstract

Age‐related telomere length (TL) variation is relatively well‐described for mammals, birds and other model organisms. Nevertheless, it remains largely unknown in ectotherms, especially turtles and tortoises, which are extremely long‐lived species with slow or negligible senescence. In this study, we described TL dynamics in wild spur‐thighed tortoises (Testudo graeca), one of the chelonian species with the lowest aging rates. By combining cross‐sectional (single) and longitudinal (capture–recapture) samplings, we assessed the relationship between TL and individual characteristics (sex, age, individual growth rate, body condition index, presence of shell anomalies). We did not find any association between TL and sex, individual growth rate, or body condition. However, the relationship with age remains uncertain, likely due to the complex dynamics of TL over time. Interestingly, shorter telomeres correlated significantly with shell anomalies, which are usually assumed as a fitness proxy for reptiles. Overall, our results suggest TL as a potential indicator for ontogenetic studies on tortoises, while its utility as a marker of biological age appears limited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. Characterization of Patients with Chronic Diseases and Complex Care Needs: A New High-Risk Emergent Population

Abstract

Background: To analyze the prevalence and main epidemiological, clinical and outcome features of in-Patients with Complex Chronic conditions (PCC) in internal medicine areas, using a pragmatic working definition. Methods: Prospective study in 17 centers from Spain, with 97 in-hospital, monthly prevalence cuts. A PCC was considered when criteria of polypathological patient (two or more major chronic diseases) were met, or when a patient suffered one major chronic disease plus one or more of nine predefined complexity criteria like socio-familial risk, alcoholism or malnutrition among others (PCC without polypathology). A complete set of baseline features as well as 12-months survival were collected. Then, we compared clinical, outcome variables, and PROFUND index accuracy between polypathological patients and PCC without polypathology. Results: The global prevalence of PCC was 61% (40% of them were polypathological patients, and 21% PCC withouth polypathology) out of the 2178 evaluated patients. Their median age was 82 (59.5% men), suffered 2.3 ± 1.1 major diseases (heart diseases (70.5%), neurologic (41.5%), renal (36%), and lung diseases (26%)), 5.5 ± 2.5 other chronic conditions, met 2.5 ± 1.5 complexity criteria, and presented functional decline (Barthel index 55 (25-90)). Compared to polypathological patients, the subgroup of PCC without polypathology were younger, with a different pattern of major diseases and comorbidities, a better functional status, and lower 12-months mortality rates ((36.2% vs 46.8%; p = .003; OR 0.7(0.48-0.86). The PROFUND index obtained adequate calibration and discrimination power (AUC-ROC 0.67 (0.63-0.69)) in predicting 12-month mortality of PCC. Conclusion: Patients with complex chronic conditions are highly prevalent in internal medicine areas; their clinical pattern has changed in parallel to socio-epidemiological modifications, but their death-risk is still adequately predicted by PROFUND index.
