A series of examiner variability studies were carried out in the assessment of restorations in adults made by extended duty ancillaries (E.D.A.s). While there were some differences between the two supervising team dentists these were smaller than those found when dentists who did not work in the project were examined. The use of indirect evaluation by examining bitewing radiographs for the presence of overhangs was no improvement over the clinical examination in terms of examiner agreement, and moreover only identified half of the restorations scheduled for replacement clinically. Using the results of these experiments, it is suggested that quality control should take into account examiner variability and consequently a 3-4 % sample would be sufficient to maintain standards. Transcutaneous electromyography (tc-EMG) has been used to measure the electrical activity of respiratory muscles during inspiration in various studies. Processing the raw tc-EMG signal of these inspiratory muscles has shown to be difficult as baseline noise, cardiac interference, cross-talk and motion artefacts can influence the signal quality. In this review we will discuss the most important sources of signal noise in tc-EMG of respiratory muscles and the various techniques described to suppress or reduce this signal noise. Furthermore, we will elaborate on the options available to develop or improve an algorithm that can be used to guide the approach for analysis of tc-EMG signals of inspiratory muscles in future research. Wildlife tuberculosis is a major economic and conservation concern globally. Bovine tuberculosis (bTB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis ( M. bovis ), is the most common form of wildlife tuberculosis. In South Africa, to date, M. bovis infection has been detected in 24 mammalian wildlife species. The identification of M. bovis infection in wildlife species is essential to limit the spread and to control the disease in these populations, sympatric wildlife species and neighboring livestock. The detection of M. bovis -infected individuals is challenging as only severely diseased animals show clinical disease manifestations and diagnostic tools to identify infection are limited. The emergence of novel reagents and technologies to identify M. bovis infection in wildlife species are instrumental in improving the diagnosis and control of bTB. A herd of African buffaloes ( Syncerus caffer ) was tested for Mycobacterium bovis infection using three cytokine release assays. All animals were subsequently euthanized and mycobacterial culture determined the infection prevalence (52%) and diagnostic characteristics. Sensitivities were lower than previously reported and results provide new insight into the practical utility of these assays.

The cytokine interferon gamma-inducible protein 10 (IP-10) is a sensitive biomarker of Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) infection in African buffaloes (Syncerus caffer). However, elevated levels of IP-10 in QuantiFERON®-TB Gold (QFT) unstimulated whole blood compromises the utility of this biomarker. In this study, IP-10 and interferon gamma (IFN-γ) concentrations in whole blood samples from M. bovis culture-confirmed buffaloes with varying degrees of pathological changes (n = 72) and uninfected controls (n = 70) were measured in the IP-10 release assay (IPRA) and IFN-γ release assay (IGRA), respectively. Findings suggest that concentrations of both cytokines in QFT Nil tubes were higher in infected buffaloes with macroscopic pathological changes consistent with bovine tuberculosis compared to uninfected controls, and IGRA values increased with more severe pathological changes in infected buffaloes (p < 0.05). Finally, in culture-confirmed buffaloes with IPRA-negative and IGRA-positive test results, most animals were also those with the most advanced pathology. We conclude that IP-10 and IFN-γ concentrations measured in QFT Nil tubes may provide insight into the presence of M. bovis pathology in infected buffaloes. Geographic variation in the reproductive traits of animal-pollinated plants can be shaped by spatially variable selection imposed by differences in the local pollination environment. We investigated this process in Babiana ringens (Iridaceae), an enigmatic species from the Western Cape region of South Africa. B. ringens has evolved a specialized perch facilitating cross-pollination by sunbirds and displays striking geographic variation in perch size and floral traits. Here, we investigate whether this variation can be explained by geographic differences in the pollinator communities. We measured floral and inflorescence traits, and abiotic variables (N, P, C, and rainfall) and made observations of sunbirds in populations spanning the range of B. ringens . In each population, we recorded sunbird species identity and measured visitation rates, interfloral pollen transfer, and whether the seed set of flowers was pollen limited. To evaluate whether competition from co-occurring sunbird-pollinated species might reduce visitation, we quantified nectar rewards in B. ringens and of other co-flowering bird-pollinated species in local communities in which populations occurred. Variation in abiotic variables was not associated with geographical variation of traits in B. ringens . Malachite sunbirds were the dominant visitor (97% of visits) and populations with larger-sized traits exhibited higher visitation rates, more between-flower pollen transfer and set more seed. No sunbirds were observed in four populations, all with smaller-sized traits. Sunbird visitation to B. ringens was not associated with local sunbird activity in communities, but sunbird visitation was negatively associated with the amount of B. ringens sugar relative to the availability of alternative nectar sources. Our study provides evidence that B. ringens populations with larger floral traits are visited more frequently by sunbirds, and we propose that visitation rates to B. ringens may be influenced, in part, by competition with other sunbird-pollinated species., Competing Interests: None declared., (© 2019 The Authors. Dispersal and dormancy are important risk-reducing strategies in unpredictable environments. Negative covariation between these strategies is theoretically expected, but empirical evidence is limited and inconsistent. Moreover, covariation may be affected by other life-history traits and may vary across levels of biological organization. We assessed dispersal (vertical fall time of fruits, a proxy for wind dispersal ability) and dormancy (germination fractions measured during germination trials) in populations of 15 annual and 12 perennial wind-dispersed species in six Asteraceae genera from South Africa. Dormancy was higher in annuals than in perennials, whereas fall time was largely determined by evolutionary history. Controlling for phylogeny, dispersal and dormancy was negatively associated across species and life-history categories. Negative covariation between dispersal and dormancy was not evident at either the individual level (except for seed heteromorphic species) or the population level. Our study provides rare empirical support for the theoretical expectation of tradeoffs between dormancy and the alternative risk-reducing strategies, perenniality and dispersal, but refutes the expectation of increased dispersability in perennials. Although negative covariation between dispersal and dormancy at the species level appears not to be a simple consequence of upscaling individual-level mechanistic tradeoffs, our findings suggest that selection for one strategy may constrain evolution of the other., (© 2015 The Authors. Premise of the Study: The showiness of floral displays is usually explained as an adaptation to attract pollinators. However, selection for less attractive displays imposed by non-pollinating agents, particularly herbivores, may balance pollinator-driven selection for highly visible inflorescences. We investigated whether inflorescence architecture, particularly the unusual ground-level flowering associated with a specialized bird perch in Babiana ringens may have originated, in part, as an adaptive response to mammalian herbivory., Methods: We measured levels of herbivory by antelope in populations of B. hirsuta, the putative sister species of B. ringens, which possesses the likely ancestral form of inflorescence architecture. To test for position-dependent effects of herbivory on flowers, we compared the herbivory rates and seed production of manipulated inflorescences in a field experiment. We predicted that flowers at the base of inflorescences would suffer less herbivory than those in apical positions., Results: We found herbivore damage to flowers in 50% of naturally occurring B. hirsuta plants. Manipulated inflorescences with only basal flowers, and consequently similar inflorescence architecture to B. ringens, experienced significantly lower herbivory and higher seed set than inflorescences manipulated to have only apical flowers., Conclusions: Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that position-dependent herbivory on inflorescences could have played a role in the evolution of inflorescence design. More specifically, position-dependent herbivory may have selected for the loss of apical flowers. Position-dependent herbivory may have contributed toward the evolution of a naked inflorescence axis, a structure that characterizes B. ringens and functions as a bird perch facilitating cross-pollination by sunbirds.

Background and Aims: Floral variation, pollination biology and mating patterns were investigated in sunbird-pollinated Babiana (Iridaceae) species endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa. The group includes several taxa with specialized bird perches and it has been proposed that these function to promote cross-pollination., Methods: Pollinator observations were conducted in 12 populations of five taxa (B. ringens subspp. ringens, australis, B. hirsuta, B. avicularis, B. carminea) and geographic variation in morphological traits investigated in the widespread B. ringens. Experimental pollinations were used to determine the compatibility status, facility for autonomous self-pollination and intensity of pollen limitation in six populations of four taxa. Allozyme markers were employed to investigate mating patterns in four populations of three species., Key Results: Sunbirds were the primary pollinators of the five Babiana taxa investigated. Correlated geographical variation in perch size, flower size and stigma-anther separation was evident among B. ringens populations. Experimental pollinations demonstrated that B. ringens and B. avicularis were self-compatible with variation in levels of autonomous self-pollination and weak or no pollen limitation of seed set. In contrast, B. hirsuta was self-incompatible and chronically pollen limited. Estimates of outcrossing rate indicated mixed mating with substantial self-fertilization in all species investigated., Conclusions: Despite the possession of specialized bird perches in B. ringens and B. avicularis, these structures do not prevent considerable selfing from occurring, probably as a result of autonomous self-pollination. In eastern populations of B. ringens, smaller flowers and reduced herkogamy appear to be associated with a shift to predominant selfing. Relaxed selection on perch function due to increased selfing may explain the increased incidence of apical flowers in some populations.

Leptospirosis is considered to be an important cause of porcine reproductive failure. In this respect recently attention is paid to the possible role of Leptospira interrogans serotype bratislava (bratislava). In the present paper the results of serotype bratislava serology conducted on three farms are presented and discussed. On two of the farms no reproductive failure was observed. On the third farm with a high percentage of return to service a longitudinal search was done. No relation could be demonstrated between bratislava titers and reproductive failure.

A study was conducted to examine the usefulness of a glycoprotein I (gI)-ELISA to monitor Aujeszky's disease virus infection in two vaccinated pig herds; the gI-ELISA can differentiate between pigs infected with Aujeszky's disease virus and pigs vaccinated against Aujeszky's disease with gI-negative vaccines. The two herds had been vaccinated with gI-negative vaccines for several years. The first survey, in September 1986, revealed that approximately 10 per cent of the breeding pigs in a large multiplier herd were seropositive for antibodies to gI of Aujeszky's disease virus, and it was decided to try to eliminate the virus from the herd by gI-ELISA testing and culling of gI-seropositive pigs. A one month quarantine period for incoming stock was established, and only gI-seronegative pigs were admitted to the herd. After two rounds of testing and culling the herd appeared to be free of wild-type Aujeszky's disease virus, and neither Aujeszky's disease virus nor antibodies could be detected either in 21 sentinel pigs placed on the farm or in 347 stillborn piglets or piglets that died shortly after birth. The herd probably remained free of Aujeszky's disease virus until the end of the 27-month period of monitoring except for two of 639 breeding pigs that were unexpectedly found to be positive in the gI-ELISA in November 1987. These sows were culled. A second breeding herd was monitored for antibodies to gI of Aujeszky's disease virus for two years. The gI-seropositive sows constituted approximately 30 per cent of the herd's breeding pigs, but they were not culled.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
