Abstract

The Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) was launched on July 15, 2004 on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Earth Observing System Aura satellite. OMI is an ultraviolet-visible imaging spectrograph providing daily global coverage with high spatial resolution. This paper discusses the ground data processing software used for Level 0 to Level 1b processing of OMI data. In addition, the OMI operations scenario is described together with the data processing concept. This paper is intended to serve as a reference guide for users of OMI (Level 1b) data. Abstract

The Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) was launched on July 15, 2004 on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Earth Observing System Aura satellite. The OMI instrument is an ultraviolet-visible imaging spectrograph that uses two-dimensional charge-coupled device detectors to register both the spectrum and the swath perpendicular to the flight direction with a 115[degrees] wide swath, which enables global daily ground coverage with high spatial resolution. This paper presents the OMI design and discusses the main performance and calibration features and results. Abstract

The Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) flies on the National Aeronautics and Space Adminsitration's Earth Observing System Aura satellite launched in July 2004. OMI is a ultraviolet/visible (UV/VIS) nadir solar backscatter spectrometer, which provides nearly global coverage in one day with a spatial resolution of 13 km x 24 km. Trace gases measured include [O.sub.3], N[O.sub.2], S[O.sub.2], HCHO, BrO, and OCIO. In addition, OMI will measure aerosol characteristics, cloud top heights, and UV irradiance at the surface. OMI's unique capabilities for measuring important trace gases with a small footprint and dally global coverage will be a major contribution to our understanding of stratospheric and tropospheric chemistry and climate change. OMI's high spatial resolution is unprecedented and will enable detection of air pollution on urban scale resolution. In this paper, the instrument and its performance will be discussed. 17. TROPOMI, A Stepping Stone for Global Troposphere Monitoring

Abstract

Accurate Earth Observation measurements can only be achieved by multi-spacecraft missions. One example is the Sentinels constellation where five satellites will cover the full spectrum of Earth Observation tasks: all-weather imagery (Sentinel 1), land observation (Sentinel 2), marine services (Sentinels 3), weather forecast (Sentinel 4), and atmospheric chemistry (Sentinel 5). The synergic operation of this constellation will constitute an important element of the European system “Global Monitoring for Environment and Security”. A co-operation between ESA and NSO has been set to deploy a precursor of the Sentinel-5 mission. The satellite will embark TROPOMI an instrument designed to reach the goal of boosting performance two orders of magnitude with respect to missions in operation. The mission, with its dual role of technology demonstrator and operative element of the GMES, poses unprecedented challenges: a tight schedule to achieve in-orbit demonstration and a complex procurement to respect the industrial return of the participating nations. TROPOMI uses groundbreaking technologies to bring spatial resolution, global coverage and measurement accuracy to unmatched levels. This paper presents an overview of the mission and describes the technologies developed to achieve the mission objectives. The innovations used in TROPOMI are at their early stage of development and may lead to revolutionary architectures.

Abstract

TROPOMI is a nadir-viewing grating-based imaging spectrograph in the line of OMI and SCIAMACHY. TROPOMI is part of the ESA Candidate Core Explorer Mission proposal TRAQ and also of the CAMEO satellite proposed for the US NRC decadal study. A TROPOMI-like instrument is part of the ESA/EU Sentinel 4&5 pre-phase A studies. TROPOMI covers the OMI wavelengths of 270-490 nm to measure O3, NO2, HCHO, SO2 and aerosols and adds a NIR channel and a SWIR module. The NIR-channel (710-775 nm) is used for improved cloud detection and aerosol height distribution. The SWIR module (2305 - 2385 nm) measures CO and CH4 and forms a separate module because of its thermal requirements. TROPOMI is a non-scanning instrument with an OMI-like telescope but optimized to have smaller ground pixels (10 x 10 km2) and sufficient signal-to-noise for dark scenes (albedo 2 %). TROPOMI has the same wide swath as OMI (2600 km). In TRAQ's mid-inclination orbit, this allows up to 5 daytime observations over mid-latitude regions (Europe, North-America, China). The paper gives a description of the TROPOMI instrument and focuses on several important aspects of the design, for example the sun calibration and detector selection status.

30. Two novel haemoglobin variants that affect haemoglobin A1c measurement by ion-exchange chromatography.

Abstract

Background: Haemoglobin (Hb) variants are well-known factors interfering with accurate HbA1c testing. This report describes two novel Hb variants leading to inappropriate quantification of HbA1c by ion-exchange chromatography. Methods: Glycated forms of novel Hb variants were recognised in the blood of two patients with diabetes mellitus screened by HbA1c ion-exchange chromatography. Dedicated high-resolution cation-exchange chromatography and subsequent DNA sequencing revealed the exact nature of the variants. Other common techniques for quantifying HbA1c were applied on both samples and haematological parameters were determined to judge possible pathology associated with the novel Hb variants. Results: A fraction of 15% of abnormal Hb was observed in a 37-year-old female. DNA sequencing revealed a heterozygous mutation in the α1-globin gene, resulting in a leucine-to-phenylalanine amino-acid substitution (HBA1: c.301C > T, p.Leu101Phe). We named this variant Hb Weesp. The other novel variant, Hb Haelen, presented as a 40% fraction in a 63-year-old male and resulted from a heterozygous amino acid substitution in the β-globin gene (HBB: c.335T > C, p.Val112Gly). The presence of both Hb variants resulted in aberrant separation of the Hb components, leading to an inadequate quantification of HbA1c. Conclusions: Close examination of HbA1c chromatograms revealed two novel, clinically silent Hb variants that interfere with HbA1c quantification.
