Over the last decades, pediatric care has witnessed at least two fundamental changes leading to increased care complexity: First, there seems to be an epidemiological shift from acute to chronic health conditions in children and young people. Second, comorbidity between physical and/or mental health conditions seems to increase in their quantity (number of children/young people) and severity (number and complexity of health conditions) (cf. Pygott et al., 2023). Recent studies suggest that children and young people experiencing chronic and comorbid health conditions are at risk of cognitive, social and emotional developmental delays, lower educational attainment and poorer family finances (cf. van den Akker et al., 2022). Moreover, unmet healthcare needs in early life may have a negative impact health and economic outcomes later in life (cf. Hargreaves, Elliott, Viner, Richmond & Schuster, 2015). Glader, Plews-Ogan and Agrawal (2016) suggest that healthcare teams in complex pediatric care are interprofessional by nature involving physicians of multiple specialties, nurses and allied health professionals such as physical therapists, psychologists and nutritionists. Besides, and to meet healthcare needs and to provide comprehensive care, patients and their families are increasingly involved in care planning as equal member complex pediatric care teams. In theory, Reeves, Xyrichis and Zwarenstein (2018) argue that care complexity is positively related to the intensity of interprofessional collaboration. For instance, more complex healthcare is associated with higher interdependency between care team members and stronger shared team identity. In practice, boundaries of care complexity are permeable, degrees and natures of appropriate care are often indeterminate, varying between professional perspectives that are taken. To conjugate perspectives, Glader and colleagues (2016) propose using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF; World Health Organization [WHO], 2001) as a framework in complex pediatric care. It describes and organizes the complexity of human functioning in terms of body functions and structures relating to impairments in body systems, activities reflecting a range of skills which allow a child to execute a task, participation including involvement in education, organized or spontaneous activities, and contextual factors being external in the physical and social environment or personal related to individual characteristics. By providing a common language and model, Snyman and colleagues (2019) argue that the ICF facilitates interprofessional teams including patients and their families to establish a shared and complete picture of complex healthcare needs which can then be integrated into comprehensive care. However, and despite models such as the ICF, it is yet unclear how perceived complexity and preferences for interprofessional collaboration vary within and across healthcare professionals from different backgrounds. This knowledge is necessary to better understand and communicate the complexity of healthcare needs and may lead to relevant interventions aimed at facilitating interprofessional collaboration in pediatric complex care. Therefore, this study sets out to examine the relationship between care complexity and interprofessional collaboration as well as differences between professionals’ perceived complexity and preferences for interprofessional teams in complex pediatric care using paper-based patient cases based on varying complexity along the ICF-factors. We distinguish between three objectives: I. The first objective is to examine whether perceived case complexity, need for an integrated care plan, need for an IP-meeting, preferred IP-team composition and willingness of integrating care with selected individual team members differ between professional groups (allied health professionals, nurses, physicians). II. The second objective is to examine whether modeled pediatric case complexity is related to perceived case complexity, need for an integrated care plan, need for an IP-meeting, preferred IP-team composition and willingness of integrating care with selected individual team members, and whether these relationships differ between professional groups. III. The third objective is to examine the effect of separate ICF-factors in the modeled pediatric patient cases on perceived case complexity, need for an integrated care plan, need for an IP-meeting, preferred IP-team composition and willingness of integrating care with selected individual team members, and whether these effects differ between professional groups.

Door de extramuralisering van de gezondheidszorg wordt steeds meer verpleegkundige zorg verleend buiten de instellingen. Ondanks deze ontwikkeling heeft ongeveer tachtig procent van de studenten hbo-verpleegkunde een voorkeur voor het ziekenhuis, wat bijdraagt aan de tekorten op de arbeidsmarkt in de wijk. Uit een door de auteurs uitgevoerd groot surveyonderzoek naar beelden over wijkverpleegkunde en werkveldvoorkeuren van eerstejaars-hbo-v-studenten, eerder gepubliceerd in OenG 3-2018, bleek dat studenten de uitdagingen die verpleegkunde in de wijk biedt onderschatten. Met deze informatie ontwikkelde de opleiding verpleegkunde van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam een integrale aanpak om misconcepties over wijkverpleegkunde tegen te gaan, in de hoop de beeldvorming positiever te maken. Dit artikel beschrijft de vormgeving van het curriculum-herontwerp en het effect dat dit heeft op de beeldvorming en stagevoorkeuren van de studenten die in 2018 op dit onderwijs afstudeerden.
