With the exception of wood, the use of natural (biobased) materials (based on hemp, flax, straw or other natural resources) is still limited. Nevertheless, many benefits are attributed to these materials in terms of a healthier and more comfortable indoor climate. Other potential benefits of natural insulation materials that are often mentioned are energy savings and reduced environmental impact. This report focuses on the empirical support for these claims, identifies research gaps and suggests, where appropriate, recommendations for next steps.

De aanpak van koprot in uien vraagt een brede strategie. Naast de timing van middelen is ook het voorkomen van infectiebronnen belangrijk. Signum bleek opnieuw het effectiefste middel. Dat blijkt uit de koprotproef 2014 van PPO-AGV in Lelystad. De cijfers werden bekendgemaakt tijdens de Themadag Uien in De Meerpaal in Dronten (Fl.). De veldproef vond plaats op een perceel in de Flevolandse klei met het ras Dormo. De uien werden 24 april 2014 gezaaid en 14 oktober geoogst. De onderzoekers pasten vijf doorspuitschema’s toe en werkten met zeven praktijkstrategieën.

This report describes results of work carried out within the EnAlgae project to describe production costs and identify the variables that have most effect in determining future cost prices so that R&D can be focussed on these issues. This has been done by making use of pilots within the EnAlgae consortium and by describing the process in Excel models that have been spread among and discussed with stakeholders active in the field of commercial algae production. The expectation is that this transparency and interaction will lead to an increase of the learning curve to make algae production cheaper and thus supplying more markets.

In this study it was estimated that 6.4 out of 35.0 million tons (dry matter) of animal feeds and raw feed materials that are annually available in the Netherlands, can be used as a resource for application in the biobased economy. Biorefinery enables us to extract feed components that cannot be utilized by animals. The challenge is to add value by applying these components in various value chains (cascading). In deze studie is ingeschat dat van de 35.000 kton droge stof (ds) voedermiddelen en diervoedergrondstoffen die jaarlijks in Nederland beschikbaar is, potentieel ruim 6.400 kton ds biomassa vrijgemaakt kan worden voor efficiëntere toepassingen via biobased technologie. Via bioraffinage zijn “niet-benutbare componenten” voor het dier te scheiden van voor het dier benutbare componenten. Ook is het mogelijk om via bioraffinage componenten uit voedermiddelen en diervoedergrondstoffen te halen die op een hoogwaardiger manier buiten de diervoeding zijn in te zetten. Op deze manier is biomassa vrij te spelen als grondstof voor de Biobased Economy (BBE).

Het doel van deze studie was te inventariseren welke waardevolle stoffen uit mest gewonnen kunnen worden en wat de potentie is in technologie en markt om deze te verwaarden. De inhoud van mest kan onderverdeeld worden in de volgende hoofdcategorieën: organische stof, mineralen, zware metalen, aminozuren, vluchtige vetzuren, antibiotica, hormonen. Via literatuuronderzoek is de samenstelling van elke categorie uiteen gesplitst in de verschillende stoffen met daarbij het gemiddelde gehalte van de betreffende stof in mest. Voor elke stof is de range in marktprijs nagegaan en aan de hand van het gehalte en marktprijs is de intrinsieke waarde van elke stof in de mest bepaald. Per hoofdcategorie van stoffen valt aan de hand van de waarde van de componenten te voorspellen of het mogelijk is om een sluitende business case te maken.

This report is part of the EnAlgae Workpackage 2, Action 7, directed at the economics of algae production. The goal of this report is to highlight potential markets for algae. Per type of algae market the market size, product alternatives, constraints and prices are highlighted. Based on these market characteristics a conclusion is drawn on the market potential for algae products. Per market desk research is done and literature is consulted to create a reliable market outlook.

Deze studie is opgezet om na te gaan of de extra opbrengst aan biogas opweegt tegen de extra kosten die moeten worden gemaakt om een Thermische Druk Hydrolyse (TDH) proces te koppelen aan een vergister. Er is berekend hoe hoog de te verwachten extra investeringskosten en operationele kosten zijn, en ook hoe hoog de te verwachten extra baten zijn. Bij de baten zijn verschillende scenario’s doorgerekend, uitgaande van verschillende niveaus van extra gasopbrengst, waarde van het geproduceerde methaan en warmteterugwinning. Van de beoogde scenario’s wordt alleen in het uiterste geval een klein positief resultaat behaald. De conclusie is dat het THD proces onder de bestudeerde omstandigheden als niet-rendabel moet worden beoordeeld. Hoewel de hoge operationele kosten (35%) zeker niet onbelangrijk zijn, zijn met name de kapitaalskosten te hoog.

This report is the result of the EIP-AGRI Focus Group (FG) on Soil organic matter (SOM) content in Mediterranean regions, which was launched under the European Innovation Partnership Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (EIP-AGRI). The Focus Group brought together 19 experts with different backgrounds and experiences to make recommendations on transferable innovative solutions for the purpose of improving soil organic matter content in the Mediterranean region in a cost-effective way while securing soil functionality and soil fertility in the specific context of Mediterranean regions

In Europa wordt voor non-GMO soja een premie betaald van zo'n 150 euro per ton. Dit geldt voor soja voor de humane voeding zoals sojadrinks en vleesvervangers. Het volume van deze markt is beperkt, maar in Hamburg staat een fabriek die graag Nederlandse soja koopt terwijl inmiddels ook een Nederlands sojabedrijf zijn oog heeft laten vallen op “Nedersoja”. De genoemde premie geldt ook voor de niche-markten van vleesproducten die met non-GMO soja zijn geproduceerd. Deze markt is groter maar heeft wel grotere volumes nodig. De vraag is nu welke kansen deze ontwikkeling biedt voor Noord Nederland. Dit gebied heeft enerzijds een grote melkveehouderij en anderzijds een groot akkerbouwareaal. Op de eerste plaats liggen er kansen voor de Noord Nederlandse melkveehouderij om soja te gebruiken die in de regio geteeld is. Dat moet wel voldoende volume hebben om soja regionaal te extruderen om de soja verteerbaar te maken. Op de tweede plaats kan het akkerbouwareaal gebruikt worden om soja te produceren voor in eerste plaats de non-GMO sojamarkt.

Veldexperiment om de effectiviteit van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen ter bestrijding van Botrytis aclada gedurende het veldseizoen te bepalen. Hierbij is naast doorspuitschema's in overleg met de sector ook gekozen voor spuitstrategieën zoals deze in de praktijk kunnen worden toegepast.

Gedurende het seizoen werden de belangrijkste raseigenschappen, zoals stevigheid en vroegrijpheid, vastgelegd en van alle velden werd de opbrengst en het vochtgehalte bij de oogst bepaald. Aan een monster werd bij BLGG via de Kjeldahl-methode het N-gehalte bepaald waaruit het eiwitgehalte is te berekenen. Eén van de belangrijke eigenschappen van een goed sojaras is dat het tot aan de oogst overeind blijft staan en niet gaat legeren. Op die manier kan het gewas optimaal produceren en kunnen de bonen zonder al teveel verliezen geoogst worden.

Soja is weliswaar een vlinderbloemig gewas dat (via de vorming van stikstofknolletjes aan de wortels) in z’n eigen stikstofbehoefte kan voorzien, de ervaring leert echter dat het gewas in Nederland vaak een erg lichte bladkleur heeft gedurende het seizoen wat kan duiden op N-gebrek. Voor de vorming van de stikstofknolletjes aan de wortels is een goed geslaagde enting nodig met Rhizobium bacteriën. Over hoeveel knolletjes er per plant nodig zijn om in de N-behoefte te kunnen voorzien bestaat nog grote onduidelijkheid. Ook is niet duidelijk of een N-bemesting bij soja kan leiden tot hogere en stabielere opbrengsten.

Doelstelling van de eerste fase van het onderzoek was ‘het verkennen van kleinschalige keten(s) voor de raffinage van bietenblad’, met aandacht voor de technologische en economische haalbaarheid. Deze verkenning vormt de basis voor de volgende fase, waarin kansrijke opties verder worden uitgewerkt en openstaande vragen worden beantwoord. De eerste fase bestond uit het benoemen van een aantal mogelijkheden om feed-eiwit te winnen uit bietenblad, in overleg met een aantal consortiumpartners. Daaruit zijn twee opties geselecteerd die technologisch haalbaar zijn (gebruik makend van bestaande technologie). Deze zijn vervolgens economisch doorgerekend op hoofdlijnen, waar nodig met gebruik van een aantal ruwe aannames. Parallel hieraan zijn een aantal proeven gedaan met bietenblad: er is bietenblad geperst en ingekuild en er zijn analyses gedaan aan vers blad en verschillende tussenproducten.

The aim of this report is to present the drivers, stakeholders and barriers of the process of improvement of energy efficiency in Dutch agriculture. Based on the DESTEP-method the most important external factors for energy-efficiency in Dutch agriculture are analysed. The DESTEP method is a useful tool for a systematic analysis of external factors. It gives a broad analysis of macro factors that may impinge upon an organization's business and operations. DESTEP stands for: demographic, economic, social, technological, ecological and political.

This report illustrates case studies with an in-depth analysis of the interactions of energy efficiency measures with farm economics and the environmental impact (GHG) of the measures across Europe. The analyses followed a common methodology considering the farm gate as the system boundary. Therefore, considerable energy use in the post-processing of agricultural products were only taken into account, when they can be assumed to be realized on the farm. The analyses of the energy use, economic and environmental effects follow an LCA approach taking into account all costs of the production, including those for machines according to the concept of “useful life” of the machines used. The environmental effects of energy saving were illustrated with the greenhouse gas emission effect of the energy efficiency measures. The case studies are only a selection of specific energy saving measures across Europe and therefore cannot be regarded as representative for all Europe. Nevertheless, they will help to understand constraints and opportunities for increased energy efficiency in agriculture, which can be used to translate to an agenda of practical action or applied research. The findings are valid sometimes only in the specific regional settings, sometimes they are of general validity.

This report provides research gaps and priorities for energy efficiency measures in agriculture across Europe, based on the analysis of the Coordination and Support Action AGREE (Agriculture & Energy Efficiency) funded by the 7th research framework of the EU (www.agree.aua.gr). The analysis from seven countries (Portugal, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Finland, Greece) shows the potential impact of different energy efficiency measures across Europe and research needs to improve energy efficiency. Potentials and constraints were identified for the categories: crop production, greenhouse production, animal housing and systems approaches.

Een Nederlandse boer kan concurreren met een Braziliaanse bio-ethanolfabriek. Voorwaarde is wel dat hij zoveel mogelijk energie perst uit elke stengel stro of korrel maïs. In Lelystad zoeken onderzoekers naar de meest efficiënte combinatie van algenteelt, mestvergisting en de productie van bio-ethanol.

Improvements in the energy efficiency of agricultural production have the potential to significantly reduce energy inputs and thereby reducing production costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Energy efficiency analysis depicts the distribution of energy inputs in a given agricultural production system and enables the determination of activities in areas where significant energy savings can be achieved. The implementation of energy efficiency policy for energy saving measures in agricultural practice is a process which requires mobilization of available resources in order to create enabling environment of drivers, developments, and stakeholders. This report is a part of Work Package 2 of the KBBE.2011.4-04 project “Energy Efficiency in Agriculture” (AGREE) supported by the 7th Framework Program. It summarizes: the state-ofthe- art on energy use and energy efficiency of agriculture, the analysis of stakeholders and drivers of energy efficiency in agriculture , and the energy saving measures and their potential for energy savings in agriculture. All the data on energy inputs, energy saving measures, and stakeholder and driver analyses were provided in individual reports from the six countries involved in the AGREE project: Finland, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, and Portugal.

The reduction of energy inputs in agricultural production is a process of practical implementation of a set of energy saving (ES) measures associated with a given type of production, farm infrastructure and managerial or organizational activities. In six national reports from Finland, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal for 13 subsectors of agriculture, 481 ES measures in total were identified and classified into seven categories: 1) type of energy input: indirect, direct; 2) type of ES measure: operational level, systems level, process monitoring, farm management, market orientation, capital goods; 3) importance: from 1-low to 5-high; 4) R&D: yes, no; 5) potential of the measure: achievable at present or not immediately ready for implementation; 6) indication of an investment cost: from €1000 to over €1000000; 7) estimated payback time: from 1 to over 5 years.

Energy efficiency is the goal of efforts to reduce the amount of energy required to provide products and services. The general term "energy efficiency", when applied to agriculture, reflects changes in technology, governmental and EC policies – including the Common Agricultural Policy, climate change on a broad scale and local weather patterns, and farming management practices. There is not a single measure to describe, ensure, or improve energy efficiency. Instead, in the energy balance for a given production process, a variety of indicators may serve and support energy efficiency analysis. The results of this study are based on the specific input of primary energy per cultivation area (GJ ha-1) and on the specific input of primary energy per ton of agricultural product (GJ t-1). All the measures that are suitable to reduce the specific energy input, will improve energy efficiency (the energy efficiency measures). Improving energy efficiency of agricultural production contributes directly to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly carbon dioxide.

Energieproducent Eneco wil al haar klanten duurzaam opgewekte energie kunnen gaan leveren. Samen met Wageningen UR werkt de energieleverancier in het project Acrres aan technieken om dat te bereiken.

Sustainability of biomass production for energy has been debated. Therefore, the Dutch government set sustainability criteria for biomass production. In this paper, a case study is presented in which crop biomass production is tested on a selection of these sustainability criteria. Environmental parameters calculated are ammonia emission, nitrate leaching, soil organic matter balance, and pesticide use. A standard crop rotation for the South East of the Netherlands was set up. Several alternative rotations were set up in which low valuable crops were substituted for energy crops. Low valuable crops were spring barley, grain maize and pea. Besides low valuable crops, also high valuable sugar beet was substituted as its share in a rotation is limited due to soil pests. Energy crops were energy (sugar) beet and energy (silage) maize for anaerobic digestion and rape seed for pure plant oil. Besides substitution of energy crops, a second scenario based on the reference rotation was calculated in which manure type was altered. De zoektocht naar nieuwe vormen van duurzame energie heeft geleid tot de vraag hoe duurzaam de energie is die uit biomassa, als hernieuwbare grondstof, geproduceerd wordt. Het project Energieboerderij is gestart om de duurzaamheid van in Nederland geproduceerde biomassa, in het bijzonder energieteelten, inzichtelijk te maken, te bepalen en te verbeteren. Er is gewerkt met een drietal in de praktijk functionerende ketens: 1. maïs – vergisting – elektriciteit; 2. suikerbieten – vergisting – elektriciteit; 3. koolzaad – Pure Plantaardige Olie / biodiesel. Het uitgangspunt was om de berekeningen zo weinig mogelijk te baseren op gegevens uit de literatuur, maar vooral gegevens van praktijkbedrijven te verzamelen en te analyseren. De duurzaamheid is bepaald met een speciaal hiervoor ontwikkelde meetlat, waarmee de energie-efficiëntie en broeikasgasemissiereductie kan worden bepaald. Deze meetlat vormt de basis voor het berekenen van duurzaamheidskengetallen en het optimaliseren van energieteelten. De uitkomsten zijn getoetst aan de duurzaamheidscriteria zoals vastgelegd in de EU-RED (Renewable Energy Directive) richtlijn voor energie uit hernieuwbare grondstoffen.
