Integrated photonics offers compact and stable manipulation of optical signals in miniaturized chips, with the possibility of changing dynamically their functionality by means of integrated phase shifters. Cryogenic operation of these devices is becoming essential for advancing photonic quantum technologies, accommodating components like quantum light sources, single photon detectors and quantum memories operating at liquid helium temperatures. In this work, we report on a programmable glass photonic integrated circuit (PIC) fabricated through femtosecond laser waveguide writing (FLW) and controlled by thermo-optic phase shifters both in a room-temperature and in a cryogenic setting. By taking advantage of a femtosecond laser microstructuring process, we achieved reliable PIC operation with minimal power consumption and confined temperature gradients in both conditions. This advancement marks the first cryogenically-compatible programmable FLW PIC, paving the way for fully integrated quantum architectures realized on a laser-written photonic chip.

Generating indistinguishable photons from independent nodes is an important challenge for the development of quantum networks. In this work, we demonstrate the generation of highly indistinguishable single photons from two dissimilar atomic quantum nodes. One node is based on a fully blockaded cold Rydberg ensemble and generates on-demand single photons. The other node is a quantum repeater node based on a DLCZ quantum memory and emits heralded single photons after a controllable memory time that is used to synchronize the two sources. We demonstrate an indistinguishability of ${94.6 \pm 5.2 \%}$ for a temporal window including ${90\%}$ of the photons. This advancement opens new possibilities for interconnecting quantum repeater and processing nodes with high fidelity Bell-state measurement without sacrificing its efficiency.

We investigate the interaction between non-classical light with a tunable multiphoton component and a highly nonlinear medium based on cold Rydberg atoms. The non-classical field emitted by a DLCZ quantum memory is stored using Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency, experiencing strong nonlinear response due to the dipole blockade. We show that the storage efficiency in the Rydberg ensemble decreases as function of the multiphoton strength of the input field, as a result of the nonlinearity. We also show that the autocorrelation function $g^{(2)}(0)$ of the retrieved field after storage in the Rydberg state is considerably reduced, leading to the first demonstration of single photon filtering with non-classical input light. Finally, we develop a simple simulation that allows us to model the effect of our medium on the input state. This work is a step towards matter-mediated photon-photon interactions with non-classical light.

We report on the high-efficiency storage and retrieval of weak coherent optical pulses and photonic qubits in a cavity-enhanced solid-state quantum memory. By using an atomic frequency comb (AFC) memory in a $Pr^{3+}:Y_2 SO_5$ crystal embedded in a low-finesse impedance-matched cavity, we stored weak coherent pulses at the single photon level with up to 62% efficiency for a pre-determined storage time of 2 $\mu$s. We also confirmed that the impedance-matched cavity enhances the efficiency for longer storage times up to 70 $\mu$s. Taking advantage of the temporal multimodality of the AFC scheme, we then store weak coherent time-bin qubits with (51+-2)% efficiency and a measurement-device limited fidelity over (94.8+-1.4)% for the retrieved qubits. These results represent the most efficient storage in a single photon level AFC memory and the most efficient qubit storage in a solid-state quantum memory up-to-date., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure, 1 table

We report on the transmission of telecom photons entangled with a multimode solid-state quantum memory over a deployed optical fiber in a metropolitan area. Photon pairs were generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion, with one photon stored in a rare earth-based quantum memory, and the other, at telecommunication wavelengths, traveling through increasing distances of optical fibre, first in the laboratory and then outside in a deployed fibre loop. We measured highly-non-classical correlations between the stored and the telecom photons for storage times up to 25 $\mu$s and for a fibre separation up to 50 km. We also report light-matter entanglement with a two-qubit fidelity up to 88$\%$, which remains constant within error bars for all fibre lengths, showing that the telecom qubit does not suffer decoherence during the transmission. Finally, we moved the detection stage of the telecom photons to a different location placed 17 km away, and confirmed the non-classical correlations between the two photons. Our system was adapted to provide the transmission of precise detection times and synchronization signals over long quantum communication channels, providing the first steps for a future quantum network involving quantum memories and non-classical states.

Rare-earth (RE) ion doped nano-materials are promising candidates for a range of quantum technology applications. Among RE ions, the so-called Kramers' ions possess spin transitions in the GHz range at low magnetic fields, which allows for high-bandwidth multimode quantum storage, fast qubit operations as well as interfacing with superconducting circuits. They also present relevant optical transitions in the infrared. In particular, Er$^{3+}$ has an optical transition in the telecom band, while Nd$^{3+}$ presents a high-emission-rate transition close to 890 nm. In this paper, we measure spectroscopic properties that are of relevance to using these materials in quantum technology applications. We find the inhomogeneous linewidth to be 10.7 GHz for Er$^{3+}$ and 8.2 GHz for Nd$^{3+}$, and the excited state lifetime T$_1$ to be 13.68 ms for Er$^{3+}$ and 540 $\mu$s for Nd$^{3+}$. We study the dependence of homogeneous linewidth on temperature for both samples, with the narrowest linewidth being 379 kHz (T$_2$ = 839 ns) for Er$^{3+}$ measured at 3 K, and 62 kHz (T$_2$ = 5.14 $\mu$s) for Nd$^{3+}$ measured at 1.6 K. Further, we investigate time-dependent homogeneous linewidth broadening due to spectral diffusion and the dependence of homogeneous linewidth on magnetic field, in order to get additional clarity of mechanisms that can influence the coherence time. Many quantum information protocols require the storage and manipulation of information over long times, and its exchange between nodes of a quantum network across long distances. Implementing these protocols requires an advanced quantum hardware, featuring, for example, a register of long-lived and interacting qubits with an efficient optical interface in the telecommunication band. Here we present the Purcell-enhanced detection of single solid-state ions in erbium-doped nanoparticles placed in a fiber cavity, emitting photons at 1536 nm. The open-access design of the cavity allows for complete tunability both in space and frequency, selecting individual particles and ions. The ions are confined in a volume two orders of magnitude smaller than in previous realizations, increasing the probability of finding ions separated only by a few nanometers which could then interact. We report the detection of individual spectral features presenting saturation of the emission count rate and linewidth, as expected for two-level systems. We also report an uncorrected $g^{(2)} \left ( 0 \right )$ of 0.24(5) for the emitted field, confirming the presence of a single emitter. Our fully fiber-integrated system is an important step towards the realization of the initially envisioned quantum hardware.

Quantum teleportation is an essential capability for quantum networks, allowing the transmission of quantum bits (qubits) without a direct exchange of quantum information. Its implementation between distant parties requires teleportation of the quantum information to matter qubits that store it for long enough to allow users to perform further processing. Here we demonstrate long distance quantum teleportation from a photonic qubit at telecom wavelength to a matter qubit, stored as a collective excitation in a solid-state quantum memory. Our system encompasses an active feed-forward scheme, implementing a phase shift on the qubit retrieved from the memory, therefore completing the protocol. Moreover, our approach is time-multiplexed, allowing for an increase in the teleportation rate, and is directly compatible with the deployed telecommunication networks, two key features for its scalability and practical implementation, that will play a pivotal role in the development of long-distance quantum communication.

Ensemble-based quantum memories are key to developing multiplexed quantum repeaters, able to overcome the intrinsic rate limitation imposed by finite communication times over long distances. Rare-earth ion doped crystals are main candidates for highly multimode quantum memories, where time, frequency and spatial multiplexing can be exploited to store multiple modes. In this context the atomic frequency comb (AFC) quantum memory provides large temporal multimode capacity, which can readily be combined with multiplexing in frequency and space. In this article, we derive theoretical formulas for quantifying the temporal multimode capacity of AFC-based memories, for both optical memories with fixed storage time and spin-wave memories with longer storage times and on-demand read out. The temporal multimode capacity is expressed in key memory parameters, such as AFC bandwidth, fixed-delay storage time, memory efficiency, and control field Rabi frequency. Current experiments in europium- and praseodymium-doped Y$_2$SiO$_5$ are analyzed within this theoretical framework, and prospects for higher temporal capacity in these materials are considered. In addition we consider the possibility of spectral and spatial multiplexing to further increase the mode capacity, with examples given for both rare earh ions.

The deployment of a fully-fledged quantum internet poses the challenge of finding adequate building-blocks for entanglement distribution between remote quantum nodes. An ideal system would combine propagation in optical fibres with quantum memories for light, leveraging on the existing communication network while featuring the scalability required to extend to network sizes. Here we demonstrate a fiber-integrated quantum memory entangled with a photon at telecommunication wavelength. The storage device is based on a fiber-pigtailed laser written waveguide in a rare-earth doped solid and allows an all-fiber stable adressing of the memory. The analysis of the entanglement is performed using fibre-based interferometers. Our results feature orders of magnitude advances in terms of storage time and efficiency for integrated storage of light-matter entanglement, and constitute a significant step forward towards quantum networks using integrated devices.

It has recently been theoretically shown that Quantum Memories (QM) could enable truly global quantum networking when deployed in space thereby surpassing the limited range of land-based quantum repeaters. Furthermore, QM in space could enable novel protocols and long-range entanglement and teleportation applications suitable for Deep-Space links and extended scenarios for fundamental physics tests. We demonstrate the storage and retrieval of an on-demand single photon generated by a collective Rydberg excitation in an ultra-low noise Raman quantum memory located in a different cold atomic ensemble. We generate single photons on demand by exciting a cold cloud of Rubidium atoms off resonantly to a Rydberg state, with a generation probability up to 15 $\%$ per trial. We then show that the single photons can be stored and retrieved with an efficiency of 21 $\%$ and a noise floor of $p_n= 2.3(3) \times 10^{-4}$ per trial in the Raman quantum memory. This leads to a signal-to-noise ratio ranging from 11 to 26 for the retrieved single photon depending on the input photon generation probability, which allows us to observe significant antibunching. We also evaluate the performances of the Raman memory as built-in unbalanced temporal beam splitter, tunable by varying the write-in control pulse intensity. In addition, we demonstrate that the Raman memory can be used to control the single-photon waveshape. These results are a step forward in the implementation of efficient quantum-repeater links using single-photon sources.

In this paper, we present our approaches for the FinSim-3 Shared Task 2021: Learning Semantic Similarities for the Financial Domain. The aim of this shared task is to correctly classify a list of given terms from the financial domain into the most relevant hypernym (or top-level) concept in an external ontology. For our system submission, we evaluate two methods: a Sentence-RoBERTa (SRoBERTa) embeddings model pre-trained on a custom corpus, and a dual word-sentence embeddings model that builds on the first method by improving the proposed baseline word embeddings construction using the FastText model to boost the classification performance. Entanglement between photons at telecommunication wavelengths and long-lived quantum memories is one of the fundamental requirements of long-distance quantum communication. Quantum memories featuring on-demand read-out and multimode operation are additional precious assets that will benefit the communication rate. In this work we report the first demonstration of entanglement between a telecom photon and a collective spin excitation in a multimode solid-state quantum memory. Photon pairs are generated through widely non-degenerate parametric down-conversion, featuring energy-time entanglement between the telecom-wavelength idler and a visible signal photon. The latter is stored in a Pr$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal as a spin wave using the full Atomic Frequency Comb scheme. We then recall the stored signal photon and analyze the entanglement using the Franson scheme. We measure conditional fidelities of $92(2)\%$ for excited-state storage, enough to violate a CHSH inequality, and $77(2)\%$ for spin-wave storage. Taking advantage of the on-demand read-out from the spin state, we extend the entanglement storage in the quantum memory for up to 47.7~$\mu$s, which could allow for the distribution of entanglement between quantum nodes separated by distances of up to 10 km.

Several platforms are being considered as hardware for quantum technologies. For quantum computing (QC), superconducting qubits and artificially trapped ions are among the leading platforms, but many others also show promise, e.g. photons, cold atoms, defect centers including Rare-Earth (RE) ions. So far, results are limited to the regime of noisy intermediate scale qubits (NISQ), with a small number of qubits and a limited connectivity, and it is likely that future QC hardware will utilize several existing platforms in different ways. Thus, it currently makes sense to invest resources broadly and explore the full range of promising routes to quantum technology. Rare-earth ions in solids constitute one of the most versatile platforms for future quantum technology. One advantage is good coherence properties even when confined in strong natural traps inside a solid-state matrix. This confinement allows very high qubit densities and correspondingly strong ion-ion couplings. In addition, although their fluorescence is generally weak, cavity integration can enhance the emission greatly and enable very good connections to photonic circuits, including at the telecom wavelengths, making them promising systems for long-term scalability. The primary aim of this roadmap is to provide a complete picture of what components a RE quantum computer would consist of, to describe the details of all parts required to achieve a scalable system, and to discuss the most promising paths to reach it. In brief, we find that clusters of 50-100 single RE ions can act as high fidelity qubits in small processors, occupying only about (10 nm)^3. Due to the high capacity for integration of the RE systems, they be optically read out and connected to other such clusters for larger scalability. Future quantum networks will enable the distribution of entanglement between distant locations and allow applications in quantum communication, quantum sensing and distributed quantum computation. At the core of this network lies the ability of generating and storing entanglement at remote, interconnected quantum nodes. While remote physical systems of various nature have been successfully entangled, none of these realisations encompassed all of the requirements for network operation, such as telecom-compatibility and multimode operation. Here we report the demonstration of heralded entanglement between two spatially separated quantum nodes, where the entanglement is stored in multimode solid-state quantum memories. At each node a praseodymium-doped crystal stores a photon of a correlated pair, with the second photon at telecommunication wavelengths. Entanglement between quantum memories placed in different labs is heralded by the detection of a telecom photon at a rate up to 1.4 kHz and is stored in the crystals for a pre-determined storage time up to 25 microseconds. We also show that the generated entanglement is robust against loss in the heralding path, and demonstrate temporally multiplexed operation, with 62 temporal modes. Our realisation is extendable to entanglement over longer distances and provides a viable route towards field-deployed, multiplexed quantum repeaters based on solid-state resources.

We present the FinCausal 2020 Shared Task on Causality Detection in Financial Documents and the associated FinCausal dataset, and discuss the participating systems and results. Two sub-tasks are proposed: a binary classification task (Task 1) and a relation extraction task (Task 2). A total of 16 teams submitted runs across the two Tasks and 13 of them contributed with a system description paper. We study the photon statistics of weak coherent pulses propagating through a cold Rydberg atomic ensemble in the regime of Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency. We show experimentally that the value of the second-order autocorrelation function of the transmitted light strongly depends on the position within the pulse and heavily varies during the transients of the pulse. In particular, we show that the falling edge of the transmitted pulse displays much lower values than the rest of the pulse. We derive a theoretical model that quantitatively predicts our results and explains the physical behavior involved. Finally, we use this effect to generate single photons localized within a pulse from the atomic ensemble. We show that by selecting only the last part of the transmitted pulse, the single photons show an antibunching parameter as low as 0.12 and a generation efficiency per trial larger than possible with probabilistic generation schemes with atomic ensembles., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

We investigate the indistinguishability of single photons retrieved from collective Rydberg excitations in cold atomic ensembles. The Rydberg spin waves are created either by off resonant two-photon excitation to the Rydberg state or by Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency. To assess the indistinguishability of the generated single photons, we perform Hong-Ou-Mandel experiments between the single photons and weak coherent states of light. We analyze the indistinguishability of the single photons as a function of the detection window and for photons generated by off-resonant excitation we infer high value of indistinguishability going from 89% for the full waveform to 98% for small detection windows. In the same way, we also investigate for the first time the indistinguishability of single photons generated by Rydberg EIT, showing values lower than those corresponding to single photons generated by off-resonant excitation. Compact Galactic binary systems with orbital periods of a few hours are expected to be detected in gravitational waves (GW) by LISA or a similar mission. At present, these so-called verification binaries provide predictions for GW frequency and amplitude. A full polarisation prediction would provide a new method to calibrate LISA and other GW observatories, but requires resolving the orientation of the binary on the sky, which is not currently possible. We suggest a method to determine the elusive binary orientation and hence predict the GW polarisation, using km-scale optical intensity interferometry. The most promising candidate is CD-30$^{\circ}$ 11223, consisting of a hot helium subdwarf with $m_B = 12$ and a much fainter white dwarf companion, in a nearly edge-on orbit with period 70.5 min. We estimate that the brighter star is tidally stretched by 6%. Resolving the tidal stretching would provide the binary orientation. The resolution needed is far beyond any current instrument, but not beyond current technology. We consider scenarios where an array of telescopes with km-scale baselines and/or the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) are equipped with recently-developed kilo-pixel sub-ns single-photon counters and used for intensity interferometry. We estimate that a team-up of the VLT and ELT could measure the orientation to $\pm 1^{\circ}$ at 2$\sigma$ confidence in 24 hours of observation.

Combining the quantum optical properties of single-photon emitters with the strong near-field interactions available in nanophotonic and plasmonic systems is a powerful way of creating quantum manipulation and metrological functionalities. The ability to actively and dynamically modulate emitter-environment interactions is of particular interest in this regard. While thermal, mechanical and optical modulation have been demonstrated, electrical modulation has remained an outstanding challenge. Here we realize fast, all-electrical modulation of the near-field interactions between a nanolayer of erbium emitters and graphene, by in-situ tuning the Fermi energy of graphene. We demonstrate strong interactions with a >1,000-fold increased decay rate for 25% of the emitters, and electrically modulate these interactions with frequencies up to 300 kHz - orders of magnitude faster than the emitters radiative decay (100 Hz). This constitutes an enabling platform for integrated quantum technologies, opening routes to quantum entanglement generation by collective plasmon emission or photon emission with controlled waveform., Comment: to be published in Nat Commun

Infrared heterodyne interferometry has been proposed as a practical alternative for recombining a large number of telescopes over kilometric baselines in the mid-infrared. However, the current limited correlation capacities impose strong restrictions on the sensitivity of this appealing technique. In this paper, we propose to address the problem of transport and correlation of wide-bandwidth signals over kilometric distances by introducing photonic processing in infrared heterodyne interferometry. We describe the architecture of a photonic double-sideband correlator for two telescopes, along with the experimental demonstration of this concept on a proof-of-principle test bed. We demonstrate the \textit{a posteriori} correlation of two infrared signals previously generated on a two-telescope simulator in a double-sideband photonic correlator. A degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio of $13\%$, equivalent to a noise factor $\text{NF}=1.15$, is obtained through the correlator, and the temporal coherence properties of our input signals are retrieved from these measurements. Our results demonstrate that photonic processing can be used to correlate heterodyne signals with a potentially large increase of detection bandwidth. These developments open the way to photonic processing of wide bandwidth signals for mid-infrared heterodyne interferometry, in particular for a large number of telescopes and for direct imager recombiners., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. The modeling of turbulent flows is critical to scientific and engineering problems ranging from aircraft design to weather forecasting and climate prediction. Over the last sixty years numerous turbulence models have been proposed, largely based on physical insight and engineering intuition. Recent advances in machine learning and data science have incited new efforts to complement these approaches. To date, all such efforts have focused on supervised learning which, despite demonstrated promise, encounters difficulties in generalizing beyond the distributions of the training data. In this work we introduce multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) as an automated discovery tool of turbulence models. We demonstrate the potential of this approach on Large Eddy Simulations of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence using as reward the recovery of the statistical properties of Direct Numerical Simulations. Here, the closure model is formulated as a control policy enacted by cooperating agents, which detect critical spatio-temporal patterns in the flow field to estimate the unresolved sub-grid scale (SGS) physics. The present results are obtained with state-of-the-art algorithms based on experience replay and compare favorably with established dynamic SGS modeling approaches. Future quantum repeater architectures, capable of efficiently distributing information encoded in quantum states of light over large distances, will benefit from multiplexed photonic quantum memories. In this work we demonstrate a temporally multiplexed quantum repeater node in a laser-cooled cloud of $^{87}$Rb atoms. We employ the DLCZ protocol where pairs of photons and single collective spin excitations (so called spin waves) are created in several temporal modes using a train of write pulses. To make the spin waves created in different temporal modes distinguishable and enable selective readout, we control the dephasing and rephasing of the spin waves by a magnetic field gradient, which induces a controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening of the involved atomic hyperfine levels. We demonstrate that by embedding the atomic ensemble inside a low finesse optical cavity, the additional noise generated in multi-mode operation is strongly suppressed. By employing feed forward readout, we demonstrate distinguishable retrieval of up to 10 temporal modes. For each mode, we prove non-classical correlations between the first and second photon. Furthermore, an enhancement in rates of correlated photon pairs is observed as we increase the number of temporal modes stored in the memory. The reported capability is a key element of a quantum repeater architecture based on multiplexed quantum memories.

The interaction of single quantum emitters with an optical cavity enables the realization of efficient spin-photon interfaces, an essential resource for quantum networks. The dynamical control of the spontaneous emission rate of quantum emitters in cavities has important implications in quantum technologies, e.g. for shaping the emitted photons waveform, for generating quantum entanglement, or for driving coherently the optical transition while preventing photon emission. Here we demonstrate the dynamical control of the Purcell enhanced emission of a small ensemble of erbium ions doped into nanoparticles. By embedding the doped nanoparticles into a fully tunable high finesse fiber based optical microcavity, we show that we can tune the cavity on- and out of-resonance by controlling its length with sub-nanometer precision, on a time scale more than two orders of magnitude faster than the natural lifetime of the erbium ions. This allows us to shape in real time the Purcell enhanced emission of the ions and to achieve full control over the emitted photons' waveforms. This capability opens prospects for the realization of efficient nanoscale quantum interfaces between solid-state spins and single telecom photons with controllable waveform, and for the realization of quantum gates between rare-earth ion qubits coupled to an optical cavity., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, submitted

The generation and distribution of entanglement are key resources in quantum repeater schemes. Temporally multiplexed systems offer time-bin encoding of quantum information which provides robustness against decoherence in fibers, crucial in long distance communication. Here we demonstrate the direct generation of entanglement in time between a photon and a collective spin excitation in a rare earth ion doped ensemble. We analyze the entanglement by mapping the atomic excitation onto a photonic qubit and by using time-bin qubits analyzers implemented with another doped crystal using the atomic frequency comb technique. Our results provide a solid-state source of entangled photons with embedded quantum memory. We report on the quantum storage of a heralded frequency-multiplexed single photon in an integrated laser-written rare-earth doped waveguide. The single photon contains 15 discrete frequency modes separated by 261 MHz and spaning across 4 GHz. It is obtained from a non-degenerate photon pair created via cavity-enhanced spontaneous down conversion, where the heralding photon is at telecom wavelength and the heralded photon is at 606 nm. The frequency-multimode photon is stored in a praseodymium-doped waveguide using the atomic frequency comb (AFC) scheme, by creating multiple combs within the inhomogeneous broadening of the crystal.
