Diseases such as anthracnose (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum) and angular leaf spot (Pseudocercospora griseola) can occur in common bean and compromise crop production, especially if susceptible cultivars are grown under conditions favorable to these diseases. The most efficient and sustainable alternative for controlling these diseases is the use of resistant cultivars. The identification of sources of resistance and the use of tools that assist in accurate selection of resistant cultivars are crucial to the success of breeding programs. The aim of this study was to characterize 67 carioca common bean cultivars recommended in Brazil regarding reaction to races 65, 73, 81, and 89 of C. lindemuthianum and to races 63‐23 and 63‐63 of P. griseola and to verify the application of factor analysis in the selection of cultivars resistant to both pathogens. The cultivars and resistant controls BRS Esplendor and MAIII.16‐159 were inoculated in a greenhouse in two experiments for each race. Cultivars were assessed for resistance to multiple races of anthracnose and angular leaf spot using artificial inoculation of plants at V2 stage. Factor analysis proved to be a good alternative for accurate selection of resistant cultivars. The percentage of cultivars simultaneously resistant to all races was low (8.95%). The cultivars Rudá R, VC 15, IAC‐Apuã, IAC‐Carioca Pyatã, BRSMG Amuleto, and BRS FC104 selected by factor analysis showed resistance to anthracnose and angular leaf spot. Therefore, these cultivars are potential sources of resistance for incorporation in bean breeding programs. The performance of inbred lines in advanced endogamous generation is commonly evaluated in successive generations of testing and selection, which we defined as "multistage field trials" (MSFT). MSFT data routinely exhibit heterogeneity of (co)variances at several levels due to genetic and/or statistical imbalance. Nowadays, mixed models have been widely used to deal with unbalanced data. However, few studies on common bean have addressed the use of a mixed model approach with modeling of (co)variance structures for random effects in MSFT. Furthermore, factor analysis and genotype‐ideotype distance (FAI‐BLUP) selection index was originally proposed using best linear unbiased predictions from individual analysis. In this regard, we aimed to study the implications of modeling (co)variance structures for random effects in the estimation of genetic parameters and evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of inbred line selection by the modeled FAI‐BLUP approach. A total of five trials were evaluated from 2018 to 2020. The results revealed that the unstructured covariance matrix fitted better for grain yield, whereas the matrix with uniform correlation and heterogeneity of variances fitted better for grain aspect and plant architecture. The modeled FAI‐BLUP approach increased the values of selection accuracy and selection efficiency. Our results suggest that modeling the different structures of (co)variances and selecting the best‐performing genotypes by modeled FAI‐BLUP approach should be used in common bean assays involving unbalanced data. 'BRSMG Camaleão' is a mungbean cultivar with large, shiny, green seeds released for the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was developed by the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center as line VC 6148-B-16. The cultivar BRSMG Madrepérola, recommended for cultivation in Minas Gerais, has the feature of maintaining a light grain color for a longer period than other Carioca grain cultivars. The purpose of this study was to characterize the genetic variability in 100 genotypes of the Active Germplasm Bank of common bean of the Federal University of Viçosa, by morphological descriptors, classify them in groups of genetic similarity and to identify the degree of relevance of descriptors of genetic divergence. The genotypes were evaluated based on 22 quantitative and qualitative morphological descriptors. The highyielding genotypes V 7936, Gold Gate, LM 95103904, 1829 S 349 Venezuela, and PF 9029975, CNFC 9454 and Fe 732015, with upright growth, have potential for use as parents in common bean breeding programs. By genetic divergence analysis, the genotypes were clustered in eight groups of genetic dissimilarity. By methods of principal components, 9 of the 22 descriptors were eliminated, for being redundant or little variable, suggesting that 10-20 morphological descriptors can be used in studies of characterization of genetic variation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance potential of red bean lines, derived from populations of the first cycle of recurrent selection in the common bean breeding program of the Federal University of Viçosa, Minas Gerais. In the F3:5, F3:6 and F3:7 generations, 243 families from 18 segregating populations were evaluated. These families were conducted by the bulk-within-families method and from the best, 154 lines were obtained and evaluated in the dry season of 2006 (F7: 9) and of 2007 (F7: 10), Coimbra - MG. The estimates of genetic and phenotypic parameters revealed variability among families. The method bulk within F3-derived families proved useful for bean breeding. The aim was to estimate the minimum number of plants required per plot to assess the anthracnose severity by artificial inoculation of V2 stage plants. Seventy-eight carioca common bean cultivars were inoculated in 13 experiments to assess its reaction to races 65, 73, 81, and 89 of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. Sample sizes ranged from one to nine plants were adopted to setting the number of plants per plot. A total of 1000 samplings were performed for each sample size. The following parameters were estimated in each sampling: accuracy, coefficient of variation and Pearson's correlation. The mean values of each parameter in the 1000 samplings for each sample size were subjected to quadratic regression with a plateau as a function of sample size for each experiment. The common bean cultivar with carioca grain type, BRSMG Uai, is recommended for cultivation in Minas Gerais and stands out for its upright plant architecture, which facilitates cultivation and mechanical harvesting. The aim of this study was to use quantile regression (QR) to characterize the effect of the adaptability parameter throughout the distribution of the productivity variable on black bean cultivars launched by different national research institutes (research centers) over the last 50 years. For this purpose, 40 cultivars developed by Brazilian genetic improvement programs between 1959 and 2013 were used. Initially, QR models were adjusted considering three quantiles (τ = 0.2, 0.5 and 0.8). Subsequently, with the confidence intervals, quantile models τ = 0.2 and 0.8 (QR0.2 and QR0.8) showed differences regarding the parameter of adaptability and average productivity. Finally, by grouping the cultivars into one of the two groups defined from QR0.2 and QR0.8, it was reported that the younger cultivars were associated to the quantile τ = 0.8, i.e., those with higher yields and more responsive conditions indicating that genetic improvement over the last 50 years resulted in an increase in both the productivity and the adaptability of cultivars. Studies highlight the hypocotyl diameter (HD) as an effective indicator of plant architecture (PA). Here, we estimated the genetic gain based on HD to improve PA. Twenty populations of cycles zero (C0) and one (C1), both in the F4 generation, were evaluated for PA, grain yield (GY) and HD. Plants with thickest HD in C0 were intercrossed in a circulant diallel mating design. In cycle C1, an estimated genetic gain of 4.93% was achieved for PA and 4.95% for HD. The populations with the highest probability of breeding lines with a thicker HD belong to cycle C1, and this selection strategy did not alter the GY of the populations of this cycle. We aimed to apply genomic information based on SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) markers for the genetic evaluation of the traits "stay-green" (SG), plant architecture (PA), grain aspect (GA) and grain yield (GY) in common bean through Bayesian models. These models were compared in terms of prediction accuracy and ability for heritability estimation for each one of the mentioned traits. A total of 80 cultivars were genotyped for 377 SNP markers, whose effects were estimated by five different Bayesian models: Bayes A (BA), B (BB), C (BC), LASSO (BL) e Ridge regression (BRR). Although, prediction accuracies calculated by means of cross-validation have been similar within each trait, the BB model stood out for the trait SG, whereas the BRR was indicated for the remaining traits. The heritability estimates for the traits SG, PA, GA and GY were 0.61, 0.28, 0.32 and 0.29, respectively. In summary, the Bayesian methods applied here were effective and ease to be implemented. The used SNP markers can help in the early selection of promising genotypes, since incorporating genomic information increase the prediction accuracy of the estimated genetic merit. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of genotype-environment interaction (GE) on common bean cultivars with carioca grain (cream-colored beans with light brown stripes), recommended for cultivation by different Brazilian research institutions in the last 40 years. The experiments were carried out with 40 cultivars in four different environments (Coimbra and Viçosa, in the dry and winter seasons of 2013) using a randomized block design with three replications. The results showed an effective increase in grain yield resulting from the use of new cultivars from different Brazilian breeding programs in the past four decades. The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic gain of two recurrent selection cycles in common bean breeding and identify families with the potential to generate superior lines. The base population, cycle zero (C0), was obtained by combining 20 carioca bean parents, populations with favorable phenotypes for several agronomically important traits. The parents were recombined in a circulant diallel scheme, in which each parent participated in two crosses, generating 20 populations. From these populations, families were derived and evaluated for three seasons in the generations F2:3, F2:4 and F2:5. The same procedures of recombination and evaluation in C0 were performed in cycle one (CI). The genetic gain for yield, estimated from the simultaneous evaluation of the 40 best families of each cycle, was 8.6%. The objective of this research was to study the parameters of adaptability and phenotypic stability and estimate the increase in grain yield in black common bean genotypes developed by brazilian breeding programs between the years 1960-2013. The experiments were carried out considering 38 cultivars and two lines in four different environments (Coimbra and Viçosa cities, and dry and winter seasons of 2013 year) by using a randomized block design with three replications. Results showed an effective increasing of the grain yield provided by the recommendation of new cultivars from different Brazilian breeding programs in the past five decades. In addition, the GxE analysis interaction indicated that cultivars recommended after the year 2005 were those with high average grain yield, wide adaptability and high predictability. This study was carried out for the purpose of estimating genetic progress after two cycles of recurrent selection in red bean breeding and of obtaining new lines. In cycle zero, F3:5 and F3:6 families were evaluated. In cycle one, the families were extracted in generation F5 and evaluated in generations F5:6 and F5:7. As the families were evaluated in different years and generations, the estimate of genetic progress was obtained by simultaneously evaluating the 30 best lines obtained at the end of each cycle in experiments conducted through three crop seasons. After two cycles of recurrent selection, genetic progress, in the mean value of the crop seasons, was 7.5% for grain yield, 7% for grain appearance, 33.4% for resistance to rust and 13.2% for resistance to angular leaf spot. Common bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris ) is one of the most consumed agricultural products in the world. Its production is affected by common bacterial blight (CBB) caused by Xanthomonas citri pv. fuscans and X. phaseoli pv. phaseoli . In this work, we investigated the spectrum, genetics, and inheritance of common bean resistance to X. citri pv. fuscans . Inoculation of nine selected cultivars with an X. citri pv. fuscans strain showed that BRS Radiante and IAPAR 16 were resistant. These two cultivars were also resistant to six X. phaseoli pv. phaseoli strains of different geographic origins, demonstrating their broad-spectrum resistances. BRS Radiante sustained smaller X. citri pv. fuscans populations than two susceptible cultivars. Stomatal densities of IAPAR 16 and BRS Radiante were significantly higher than or not different from susceptible cultivars. BRS Radiante showed the lowest general combining ability values and the combination BRS Radiante × Carioca MG the lowest specific combining ability (SCA) values, revealing the capacity of BRS Radiante to increase resistance to X. citri pv. fuscans . Positive and negative parental SCA values indicated dominant and recessive genes involved in X. citri pv. fuscans resistance. Resistance of the BRS Radiante × Carioca MG cross segregated in a 9:7 ratio in the F 2 population, indicating that it is governed by two complementary dominant genes. Maximum likelihood analysis showed that the resistance of BRS Radiante to X. citri pv. fuscans is conferred by a gene of major effect with contribution of additional polygenes. This study contributes with important knowledge on the resistance against CBB in Brazilian common bean cultivars as well as with molecular tools for confirmation of common bean hybrids.
