The "Poor Man's Majorana" [Phys. Rev. B 86, 134528 (2012)] devoid of topological protection has been theoretically predicted to rely on the minimal Kitaev chain. Afterward, a pair of superconducting and spinless quantum dots turned the proposal practicable and differential conductance pinpointed consistent fingerprints with such a scenario [Nature 614, 445 (2023) and Nature 630, 329 (2024)]. In this work, we propose a model wherein the "Poor Man's Majorana" presents protection when one of the dots is exchange coupled to a quantum spin. If this quantum dot is perturbed by tuning the exchange coupling, the well-known spill over-like behavior of this Majorana surprisingly remains unchanged, and solely half of the fine structure is unexpectedly viewed. As a matter of fact, the "Poor Man's Majorana" zero mode consists in squeezing of the other half at zero frequency, which imposes its pinning there and prevents the mixing of the mode with the explicit fine structure. We claim that if the supposed unavoidable split of the zero mode by the fine structure is unexpectedly absent, then the "Poor Man's Majorana" can be considered robust against the quantum spin. In this way, it becomes protected and the lack of topological protection paradigm of the "Poor Man's Majorana" has been revisited, pushing this seemingly well-established issue into a new direction.

We propose that a multi-graphene of ABC-type stacking yields virtual bound states lying within the Coulomb insulating gap of an Anderson-like adatom. Wondrously, a virtual state constitutes the counterpart of the atomic collapse phenomenon proposed in relativistic atomic Physics, while the second emerges as its particle-hole symmetric, analogous to a positron state. Thus, we introduce the effect as the adatomic collapse, which occurs due to a flat band with a dispersionless state and a divergent density of states $\sim|\varepsilon-\varepsilon_{F}|^{2/J-1}$ near the Fermi energy $\varepsilon_{F}$ for $J\geq3,$ where $J\pi$ is the Berry phase. We conclude this scenario based on the Kramers-Kronig transformation of the quasiparticle broadening, from where we observe that the aforementioned van Hove singularity induces virtual bound states. Counterintuitively, near the singularity, we find these states above and below the Fermi energy correlated to the existence of the bottom and top edges of the Coulomb insulating region, respectively. As such a behavior rises without a twist, the system is known as Moir\'eless and the phenomenon emerges also assisted by the adatom Coulomb correlations. Similarly to Science 340, 734 (2013) we find the effective critical atomic number $\mathcal{Z}_{c}\sim0.96$ in contrast to an ultra-heavy nucleus. Thus, we point out that multi-graphene is a proper playground for testing a predicted phenomenon of the relativistic atomic Physics in the domain of the condensed matter Physics.

We theoretically investigate the spectral properties of a quantum impurity (QI) hosting the here proposed {Majorana-Ising-type quasiparticle (MIQ) excitation}. It arises from the coupling between a finite topological superconductor (TSC) based on a chain of magnetic adatoms-superconducting hybrid system and an integer large spin $S$ flanking the QI. Noteworthy, the spin $S$ couples to the QI via the Ising-type exchange interaction. As the Majorana zero-modes (MZMs) at the edges of the TSC chain are overlapped, we counterintuitively find a regime wherein the Ising term modulates the localization of a fractionalized and resonant MZM at the QI site. Interestingly enough, the fermionic nature of this state is revealed as purely of electron tunneling-type and most astonishingly, it has the Andreev conductance completely null in its birth. Therefore, we find that a resonant edge state appears as a zero-mode and discuss it in terms of a poor man's Majorana[Nature 614, 445 (2023)].

Ni incorporation has been studied in a comprehensive range of Zn/Co-based magnetic oxides to elucidate it valence state and lattice incorporation. The resulting structural and magnetic properties are studied in detail. To the one end Ni in incorporated by in-diffusion as well as reactive magnetron co-sputtering in wurtzite ZnO where only the Ni-diffused ZnO exhibits significant conductivity. This is complemented by Ni and Co codoping of ZnO leading. To the other end, the ZnCo$_2$O$_4$ spinel is co-doped with varying amounts of Ni. In the wurtzite oxides Ni is exclusively found on tetrahedral lattice sites in its formal 2+ oxidation state as deep donor. It behaves as an anisotropic paramagnet and a limited solubility of Ni about 10\% is found. Due to its smaller magnetic moment it can induce partial uncompensation of the Co magnetic moments due to antiferromagnetic coupling. In the spinel Ni is found to be incorporated in its formal 3+ oxidation state on octahedral sites and couples antiferromagnetically to the Co moments leading again to magnetic uncompensation of the otherwise antiferromagnetic ZnCo$_2$O$_4$ spinel and to ferrimagnetism at higher Ni concentrations. We theoretically analyze the Fano interference in a single impurity multi-Weyl semimetal hybrid system and show the emergence of the topological charge Fano effect in the bulk local density of states. In multi-Weyl semimetals, the number of Fermi arcs at the system boundaries is determined by the topological charge $J$, a direct consequence of the "bulk-boundary" correspondence principle. Analogously, we find that $J$ also modulates the bulk Fano profile of the system with an embedded quantum impurity. Thus, by increasing $J$, the Fano lineshape evolves from resonant, typical for $J=1$ (single Weyl), towards antiresonant, extrapolating to the so-called hyper Weyl semimetals with $J\gg1$. Specially for the maximum case protected by the rotational symmetry $C_{2J=6}$, namely the $J=3$ (triple Weyl), which acquires asymmetric Fano profile, the Fano parameter absolute value is predicted to be $\tan(C_{2J=6})$, where $C_{2J}\equiv(360^{\circ}/2J)$ defines the rotational angle. Hence, the Fano discretization in the $J$ term introduces the topological charge Fano effect in multi-Weyl semimetals. We also suggest a transport device where we expect that the proposed Fano effect could be detected.

This work presents a theoretical analysis of the Autler-Townes splitting pattern in the four-wave mixing signal generated in a three-level cascade Doppler-broadened system. We employ the density matrix formalism to write the Bloch equations and solve them numerically. The solutions allow us to compare the response of the upper level population and the generated signal coherence for homogeneously and non-homogeneously broadened systems. Our results reveal an AC Stark shift in the nonlinear signal when the frequency of the strong or weak beam is scanned, in contrast to what is observed in the fluorescence. Furthermore, we present experimental data for the four-wave mixing signal in a hot rubidium vapor for the copropagating configuration of the exciting beams. The behavior of the AC Stark displacement and signal amplitude as a function of laser power indicates a good agreement between the model and the experimental results., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures

We theoretically investigate atomic frustrated states in diatomic molecules hosted by the bilayer graphene setup twisted by the first magic angle and with broken inversion symmetry in the Dirac cones of the system mini Brillouin zones. Such states show local spectral features typically from uncoupled atoms, but counterintuitively, they also exhibit nonlocal molecular correlations, which turn them into atomically frustrated. By considering a particle-hole symmetric molecule in the Moir\'e superlattice length-scale, we reveal distinctly from the metallic Weyl counterparts, a molecular zero mode atomically frustrated at the spectral densities of the dimer's atoms. To this end, a strong metallic phase with a plateau in the density of states established by the broken inversion symmetry, together with pronounced blue and red shifts in the molecular levels, due to the magic angle condition, should occur synergistically with atomic Coulomb correlations. Consequently, an entire collapse of these molecular peaks into a single one atomically frustrated, taking place exactly at the Fermi energy, becomes feasible just by tuning properly opposite gate voltages attached to the graphene monolayers. Therefore, we propose that unusual molecular bindings can be engineered via the twistronics of the bilayer graphene system, in particular, if its metallic phase is fully established.

Is it possible that a measurement of a spin component of a spin-1/2 particle yields the value 100? In 1988 Aharonov, Albert and Vaidman argued that upon pre- and postselection of particular spin states, weakening the coupling of a standard measurement procedure ensures this paradoxical result. This theoretical prediction, called weak value, was realized in numerous experiments, but its meaning remains very controversial, since its "anomalous" nature, i.e. the possibility to exceed the eigenvalues range, as well as its "quantumness" are debated. We address these questions by presenting the first experiment measuring anomalous weak values with just a single click, without any statistics. The measurement uncertainty is significantly smaller than the gap between the measured weak value and the nearest eigenvalue. Digital Transforms have important applications on subjects such as channel coding, cryptography and digital signal processing. In this paper, two Fourier Transforms are considered, the discrete time Fourier transform (DTFT) and the finite field Fourier transform (FFFT). A finite field version of the DTFT is introduced and the FFFT is redefined with a complex kernel, which makes it a more appropriate finite field version of the Discrete Fourier Transform. We theoretically analyze the effect of the inversion symmetry breaking on the structure of the impurity molecular states in Weyl metals. We show that for the case of a highly noncentrosymmetric Weyl metallic host, the standard picture of the alternating bonding and antibonding orbitals breaks down, and a qualitatively different frustrated atomic state emerges. This is a consequence of the pseudogap closing and related delicate Fano interplay between intra- and inter-impurity scattering channels.

Solid contacts involving soft materials are important in mechanical engineering or biomechanics. Experimentally, such contacts have been shown to shrink significantly under shear, an effect which is usually explained using adhesion models. Here we show that quantitative agreement with recent high-load experiments can be obtained, with no adjustable parameter, using a non-adhesive model, provided that finite deformations are taken into account. Analysis of the model uncovers the basic mechanisms underlying shear-induced area reduction, local contact lifting being the dominant one. We confirm experimentally the relevance of all those mechanisms, by tracking the shear-induced evolution of tracers inserted close to the surface of a smooth elastomer sphere in contact with a smooth glass plate. We consider transport properties of a hybrid device composed by a quantum dot placed between normal and superconducting reservoirs, and coupled to a Majorana nanowire: a topological superconducting segment hosting Majorana zero-modes at the opposite ends. It is demonstrated that if topologically protected (nonoverlapping) Majorana zero-modes are formed in the system, zero-bias Andreev conductance through the dot exhibits isoconductance profiles with the shape depending on the spin asymmetry of the coupling between a dot and a topological superconductor. Otherwise, for the topologically trivial situation corresponding to the formation of Andreev bound states, the conductance is insensitive to the spin polarization and the isoconductance signatures disappear. This allows to propose an experimental protocol for distinguishing between isolated Majorana zero-modes and Andreev bound states.

We introduce the concept of a Majorana molecule, a topological bound state appearing in the geometry of a double quantum dot (QD) structure flanking a topological superconducting nanowire. We demonstrate that, if the Majorana bound states (MBSs) at opposite edges are probed nonlocally in a two probe experiment, the spectral density of the system reveals the so-called half-bowtie profiles, while Andreev bound states (ABSs) become resolved into bonding and antibonding molecular configurations. We reveal that this effect is due to the Fano interference between pseudospin superconducting pairing channels and propose that it can be catched by a pseudospin resolved Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM)-tip.

We revisit well-established concepts of epidemiology, the Ising-model, and percolation theory. Also, we employ a spin $S$ = 1/2 Ising-like model and a (logistic) Fermi-Dirac-like function to describe the spread of Covid-19. Our analysis reinforces well-established literature results, namely: \emph{i}) that the epidemic curves can be described by a Gaussian-type function; \emph{ii}) that the temporal evolution of the accumulative number of infections and fatalities follow a logistic function, which has some resemblance with a distorted Fermi-Dirac-like function; \emph{iii}) the key role played by the quarantine to block the spread of Covid-19 in terms of an \emph{interacting} parameter, which emulates the contact between infected and non-infected people. Furthermore, in the frame of elementary percolation theory, we show that: \emph{i}) the percolation probability can be associated with the probability of a person being infected with Covid-19; \emph{ii}) the concepts of blocked and non-blocked connections can be associated, respectively, with a person respecting or not the social distancing, impacting thus in the probability of an infected person to infect other people. Increasing the number of infected people leads to an increase in the number of net connections, giving rise thus to a higher probability of new infections (percolation). We demonstrate the importance of social distancing in preventing the spread of Covid-19 in a pedagogical way. Given the impossibility of making a precise forecast of the disease spread, we highlight the importance of taking into account additional factors, such as climate changes and urbanization, in the mathematical description of epidemics. We explore the coexistence region in the vicinity of the Mott critical end point employing a compressible cell spin-$1/2$ Ising-like model. We analyze the case for the spin-liquid candidate $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, where close to the Mott critical end point metallic puddles coexist with an insulating ferroelectric phase. Our results are fourfold: $i$) a universal divergent-like behavior of the Gr\"uneisen parameter upon crossing the first-order transition line; $ii$) based on scaling arguments, we show that within the coexistence region, for $any$ system close to the critical point, the relaxation time is entropy-dependent; $iii$) we propose the electric Gr\"uneisen parameter $\Gamma_E$, which quantifies the electrocaloric effect; $iv$) we identify the metallic/insulating coexistence region as an electronic Griffiths-like phase. The development of new techniques to improve measurements is crucial for all sciences. By employing quantum systems as sensors to probe some physical property of interest allows the application of quantum resources, such as coherent superpositions and quantum correlations, to increase measurement precision. Here we experimentally investigate a scheme for quantum target detection based on linear optical measurment devices, when the object is immersed in unpolarized background light. By comparing the quantum (polarization-entangled photon pairs) and the classical (separable polarization states), we found that the quantum strategy provides us an improvement over the classical one in our experiment when the signal to noise ratio is greater than 1/40, or about 16dB of noise. This is in constrast to quantum target detection considering non-linear optical detection schemes, which have shown resilience to extreme amounts of noise. A theoretical model is developed which shows that, in this linear-optics context, the quantum strategy suffers from the contribution of multiple background photons. This effect does not appear in our classical scheme. By improving the two-photon detection electronics, it should be possible to achieve a polarization-based quantum advantage for a signal to noise ratio that is close to 1/400 for current technology., Comment: comments are welcome, submitted to PRA

We demonstrate that chirality of the electron scattering in Weyl semimetals leads to the formation of magnetic chemical bonds for molecular states of a pair of impurities. The effect is associated with the presence of time-reversal symmetry breaking terms in the Hamiltonian which drive a crossover from s- to p-wave scattering. The profiles of the corresponding molecular orbitals and their spin polarizations are defined by the relative orientation of the lines connecting two Weyl nodes and two impurities. The magnetic character of the molecular orbitals and their tunability open the way for using doped Weyl semimetals for spintronics and realization of qubits.

Observations of circumstellar disks provide a powerful tool for our understanding of planetary systems dynamics. Analogs to the Solar System asteroid belts, debris disks result from the collision of the remaining solid material of the planet formation process. Even if the presence of disk is now reported for hundreds of stars, its detection around stars similar to the Sun is still very sparse. We report the results of a search for debris disks around Kepler stars with surface physical parameters close to solar values, including rotation period, using observations by the Wide-field infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). From the entire sample of Kepler stars, 881 targets were identified with these parameters and only six of them (KIC 1868785, 7267949, 7435796, 10533222, 11352643, and KIC 11666436) show unambiguous infrared excess, for which we determined debris disk physical parameters. Interestingly, the present study reveals traces of debris disks much more massive and brighter than the Solar System zodiacal dust, probably resulting from recent violent collisional events, orbiting stars with ages around the solar values., Comment: 21 pages, and 3 figures, Accepted for publication on ApJL

Hybrid system composed by a semiconducting nanowire with proximity-induced superconductivity and a quantum dot at the end working as spectrometer was recently used to quantify the so-called degree of Majorana nonlocality [Deng et al., Phys.Rev.B, 98, 085125 (2018)]. Here we demonstrate that spin-resolved density of states of the dot responsible for zero-bias conductance peak strongly depends on the separation between the Majorana bound states (MBSs) and their relative couplings with the dot and investigate how the charging energy affects the spectrum of the system in the distinct scenarios of Majorana nonlocality (topological quality). Our findings suggest that spin-resolved spectroscopy of the local density of states of the dot can be used as a powerful tool for discriminating between different scenarios of the emergence of zero-bias conductance peak.

In the present study, we investigate the multifractal nature of a long-cadence time series observed by the \textit{Kepler} mission for a sample of 34 M dwarf stars and the Sun in its active phase. Using the Multifractal Detrending Moving Average algorithm (MFDMA), which enables the detection of multifractality in nonstationary time series, we define a set of multifractal indices based on the multifractal spectrum profile as a measure of the level of stellar magnetic activity. This set of indices is given by the ($A$,$\Delta \alpha$,$C$,$H$)-quartet, where $A$, $\Delta \alpha$ and $C$ are related to geometric features from the multifractal spectrum and the global Hurst exponent $H$ describes the global structure and memorability of time series dynamics. As a test, we measure these indices and compare them with a magnetic index defined as $S_{ph}$ and verify the degree of correlation among them. First, we apply the Poincar\'e plot method and find a strong correlation between the $\left\langle S_{ph}\right\rangle$ index and one of the descriptors that emerges from this method. As a result, we find that this index is strongly correlated with long-term features of the signal. From the multifractal perspective, the $\left\langle S_{ph}\right\rangle$ index is also strongly linked to the geometric properties of the multifractal spectrum except for the $H$ index. Furthermore, our results emphasize that the rotation period of stars is scaled by the $H$ index, which is consistent with Skumanich's relationship. The ground state of the diatomic molecules in nature is inevitably bonding, and its first excited state is antibonding. We demonstrate theoretically that, for a pair of distant adatoms placed buried in three-dimensional-Dirac semimetals, this natural order of the states can be reversed and an antibonding ground state occurs at the lowest energy of the so-called bound states in the continuum. We propose an experimental protocol with the use of a scanning tunneling microscope tip to visualize the topographic map of the local density of states on the surface of the system to reveal the emerging physics.

We theoretically investigate a topological Kitaev chain connected to a double quantum-dot (QD) setup hybridized with metallic leads. In this system we observe the emergence of two striking phenomena: (i) a decrypted Majorana fermion (MF) qubit recorded over a single QD, which is detectable by means of conductance measurements due to the asymmetrical MF-qubit leaked state into the QDs; (ii) an encrypted qubit recorded in both QDs when the leakage is symmetrical. In such a regime, we have a cryptographylike manifestation, since the MF qubit becomes bound states in the continuum, which is not detectable in conductance experiments.

It is generally believed that free-standing graphene does not demonstrate any ferroic properties. In the present work we revise this statement and show that single graphene sheet with a pair of magnetic adatoms can be driven into ferroelectric (FE) and multiferroic (MF) phases by tuning the Dirac cones slope. The transition into the FE phase occurs gradually, but an anomalous MF phase appears abruptly by means of a Quantum Phase Transition. Our findings suggest that such features should exist in graphene recently investigated by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (Science 352, 437 (2016)).

We propose a theoretical approach based on an interferometer composed by two quantum dots asymmetrically coupled to isolated Majorana quasiparticles (MQPs), lying on the edges of two topological Kitaev chains, respectively via couplings $(t+\Delta)$ and $(\Delta-t)$. This setup enables us to probe MQPs in a quite distinct way from the zero-bias peak feature. Most importantly, the system behaves as a current switch made by two distinct paths: (i) for the upper dot connected to both chains, the device perceives both MQPs as an ordinary fermion and the current crosses solely the lower dot, since current in the upper dot is prevented due to the presence of the superconducting gap; and (ii) by suppressing slightly the hybridization of the upper dot with one chain, the current is abruptly switched to flow through this dot, once a trapped electron as a bound state in the continuum (BIC) (Phys. Rev. B 93, 165116 (2016)) appears in the lower dot. Such a current switch between upper and lower dots characterizes the Quantum Phase Transition (QPT) proposed here, being the ratio $t/\Delta$ the control parameter of the transition. This QPT is associated with a change from an ordinary fermionic excitation regime to a MQP in the interferometer, which enables not only the fundamental revealing of MQPs, but also yields a current switch assisted by them.

The theoretical model proposed by Einstein to describe the phononic specific heat of solids as a function of temperature consists the very first application of the concept of energy quantization to describe the physical properties of a real system. Its central assumption lies in the consideration of a total energy distribution among N (in the thermodynamic limit $N \rightarrow \infty$) non-interacting oscillators vibrating at the same frequency ($\omega$). Nowadays, it is well-known that most materials behave differently at the nanoscale, having thus some cases physical properties with potential technological applications. Here, a version of the Einstein's model composed of a finite number of particles/oscillators is proposed. The main findings obtained in the frame of the present work are: (i) a qualitative description of the specific heat in the limit of low-temperatures for systems with nano-metric dimensions; (ii) the observation that the corresponding chemical potential function for finite solids becomes null at finite temperatures as observed in the Bose-Einstein condensation and; (iii) emergence of a first-order like phase transition driven by varying $N$., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, comments are wellcome

We report on a theoretical investigation of the interplay between vacuum fluctuations, Majorana quasiparticles (MQPs) and bound states in the continuum (BICs) by proposing a new venue for qubit storage.BICs emerge due to quantum interference processes as the Fano effect and, since such a mechanism is unbalanced, these states decay as regular into the continuum. Such fingerprints identify BICs in graphene as we have discussed in detail in Phys. Rev. B 92, 245107 and 045409 (2015). Here by considering two semi-infinite Kitaev chains within the topological phase, coupled to a quantum dot (QD) hybridized with leads, we show the emergence of a novel type of BICs, in which MQPs are trapped. As the MQPs of these chains far apart build a delocalized fermion and qubit, we identify that the decay of these BICs is not connected to Fano and it occurs when finite fluctuations are observed in the vacuum composed by electron pairs for this qubit. From the experimental point of view, we also show that vacuum fluctuations can be induced just by changing the chain-dot couplings from symmetric to asymmetric. Hence, we show how to perform the qubit storage within two delocalized BICs of MQPs and to access it when the vacuum fluctuates by means of a complete controllable way in quantum transport experiments., Comment: New version

We investigate theoretically the features of the Majorana hallmark in the presence of Coulomb repulsion between two quantum dots describing a spinless Aharonov-Bohm-like interferometer, where one of the dots is strongly coupled to a Kitaev wire within the topological phase. Such a system has been originally proposed without Coulomb interaction in J. of Appl. Phys. 116, 173701 (2014). Our findings reveal that for dots in resonance, the ratio between the strength of Coulomb repulsion and the dot-wire coupling changes the width of the Majorana zero-bias peak for both Fano regimes studied, indicating thus that the electronic interdots correlation influences the Majorana state lifetime in the dot hybridized with the wire. Moreover, for the off-resonance case, the swap between the energy levels of the dots also modifies the width of the Majorana peak, which does not happen for the noninteracting case. The results obtained here can guide experimentalists that pursuit a way of revealing Majorana signatures.

Graphene hosting a pair of collinear adatoms in the phantom atom configuration has pseudogap with cubic scaling on energy, $\Delta\propto|\varepsilon|^{3}$ which leads to the appearance of spin-degenerate bound states in the continuum (BICs) [Phys. Rev. B 92, 045409 (2015)]. In the case when adatoms are locally coupled to a single carbon atom the pseudogap scales linearly with energy, which prevents the formation of BICs. In this Letter, we explore the effects of non-local coupling characterized by the Fano factor of interference $q_{0},$ tunable by changing the slope of the Dirac cones in the graphene band-structure. We demonstrate that three distinct regimes can be identified: i) for $q_{0}q_{c2}$ the cubic scaling of the pseudogap with energy $\Delta\propto|\varepsilon|^{3}$ characteristic to the phantom atom configuration is restored and the phase with non-magnetic BICs is recovered. The phase with magnetic BICs can be described in terms of an effective intrinsic exchange field of ferromagnetic nature between the adatoms mediated by graphene monolayer. We thus propose a new type of quantum phase transition resulting from the competition between the states characterized by spin-degenerate and magnetic BICs.

This paper examines finite field trigonometry as a tool to construct trigonometric digital transforms. In particular, by using properties of the k-cosine function over GF(p), the Finite Field Discrete Cosine Transform (FFDCT) is introduced. The FFDCT pair in GF(p) is defined, having blocklengths that are divisors of (p+1)/2. A special case is the Mersenne FFDCT, defined when p is a Mersenne prime. We explore theoretically the formation of bound states in the continuum (BICs) in graphene hosting two collinear adatoms situated at different sides of the sheet and at the center of the hexagonal cell, where a phantom atom of a fictitious lattice emulates the six carbons of the cell. We verify that in this configuration the local density of states (LDOS) near the Dirac points exhibits two characteristic features: i) the cubic dependence on energy instead of the linear one for graphene as found in New J. Phys. 16, 013045 (2014) and ii) formation of BICs as aftermath of a Fano destructive interference assisted by the Coulomb correlations in the adatoms. For the geometry where adatoms are collinear to carbon atoms, we report absence of BICs.

We investigate theoretically a Fano interferometer composed by STM and AFM tips close to a Kitaev dimer of superconducting adatoms, in which the adatom placed under the AFM tip, encloses a pair of Majorana fermions (MFs). For the binding energy $\Delta$ of the Cooper pair delocalized into the adatoms under the tips coincident with the tunneling amplitude $t$ between them, namely $\Delta$ = $t$, we find that only one MF beneath the AFM tip hybridizes with the adatom coupled to the STM tips. As a result, a gate invariance feature emerges: the Fano profile of the transmittance rises as an invariant quantity depending upon the STM tips Fermi energy, due to the symmetric swap in the gate potential of the AFM tip., Comment: Online version published in Physica E

As the Fano effect is an interference phenomenon where tunneling paths compete for the electronic transport, it becomes a probe to catch fingerprints of Majorana fermions lying on condensed matter systems. In this work we benefit of this mechanism by proposing as a route for that an Aharonov-Bohm-like interferometer composed by two quantum dots, being one of them coupled to a Majorana bound state, which is attached to one of the edges of a semi-infinite Kitaev wire within the topological phase. By changing the Fermi energy of the leads and the symmetric detuning of the levels for the dots, we show that opposing Fano regimes result in a transmittance characterized by distinct conducting and insulating regions, which are fingerprints of an isolated Majorana quasiparticle. Furthermore, we show that the maximum fluctuation of the transmittance as a function of the detuning is half for a semi-infinite wire, while it corresponds to the unity for a finite system. We discuss theoretically the local density of states (LDOS) of a graphene sheet hosting two distant adatoms located at the center of the hexagonal cells. By putting laterally a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) tip over a carbon atom, two remarkable novel effects can be detected: i) a multilevel structure in the LDOS and ii) beating patterns in the induced LDOS. We show that both phenomena occur nearby the Dirac points and are highly anisotropic. Furthermore, we propose conductance experiments employing STM as a probe for the observation of such exotic manifestations in the LDOS of graphene induced by inter-adatoms correlations.

We present a detailed low-temperature investigation of the statics and dynamics of the anions and methyl groups in the organic conductors (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ and (TMTSF)$_2$AsF$_6$ (TMTSF : tetramethyl-tetraselenafulvalene). The 4 K neutron scattering structure refinement of the fully deuterated (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$-D12 salt allows locating precisely the methyl groups at 4 K. This structure is compared to the one of the fully hydrogenated (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$-H12 salt previously determined at the same temperature. Surprisingly it is found that deuteration corresponds to the application of a negative pressure of 5 x 10$^2$ MPa to the H12 salt. Accurate measurements of the Bragg intensity show anomalous thermal variations at low temperature both in the deuterated PF$_6$ and AsF$_6$ salts. Two different thermal behaviors have been distinguished. Low-Bragg-angle measurements reflect the presence of low-frequency modes at characteristic energies {\theta}$_E$ = 8.3 K and {\theta}$_E$ = 6.7 K for the PF$_6$-D12 and AsF$_6$-D12 salts, respectively. These modes correspond to the low-temperature methyl group motion. Large-Bragg-angle measurements evidence an unexpected structural change around 55 K which probably corresponds to the linkage of the anions to the methyl groups via the formation of F...D-CD2 bonds observed in the 4 K structural refinement. Finally we show that the thermal expansion coefficient of (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ is dominated by the librational motion of the PF$_6$ units. We quantitatively analyze the low-temperature variation of the lattice expansion via the contribution of Einstein oscillators, which allows us to determine for the first time the characteristic frequency of the PF6 librations: {\theta}$_E$ = 50 K and {\theta}$_E$ = 76 K for the PF$_6$-D12 and PF$_6$-H12 salts, respectively.

We report on superconductivity in CeFeAs1-xPxO and the possible coexistence with Ce- ferromagnetism (FM) in a small homogeneity range around x = 30% with ordering temperatures of T_SC = T_C = 4K. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature of Fe at this critical concentration is suppressed to T^N_Fe ~ 40K and does not shift to lower temperatures with further increase of the P concentration. Therefore, a quantum-critical-point scenario with T^N_Fe -> 0K which is widely discussed for the iron based superconductors can be excluded for this alloy series. Surprisingly, thermal expansion and X-ray powder diffraction indicate the absence of an orthorhombic distortion despite clear evidence for short range AFM Fe-ordering from muon-spin-rotation measurements. Multiferroics, showing simultaneous ordering of electrical and magnetic degrees of freedom, are remarkable materials as seen from both the academic and technological points of view. A prominent mechanism of multiferroicity is the spin-driven ferroelectricity, often found in frustrated antiferromagnets with helical spin order. There, similar to conventional ferroelectrics, the electrical dipoles arise from an off-centre displacement of ions. However, recently a different mechanism, namely purely electronic ferroelectricity, where charge order breaks inversion symmetry, has attracted considerable interest. Here we provide evidence for this exotic type of ferroelectricity, accompanied by antiferromagnetic spin order, in a two-dimensional organic charge-transfer salt, thus representing a new class of multiferroics. Quite unexpectedly for electronic ferroelectrics, dipolar and spin order arise nearly simultaneously. This can be ascribed to the loss of spin frustration induced by the ferroelectric ordering. We report on a systematic study of the magnetic properties on single crystals of the solid solution Cs$_2$CuCl$_{4-x}$Br$_x$ (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 4), which include the two known end-member compounds Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ and Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$, classified as quasi-two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets with different degrees of magnetic frustration. By comparative measurements of the magnetic susceptibility $\chi$($T$) on as many as eighteen different Br concentrations, we found that the inplane and out-of-plane magnetic correlations, probed by the position and height of a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility, respectively, do not show a smooth variation with x. Instead three distinct concentration regimes can be identified, which are separated by critical concentrations x$_{c1}$ = 1 and x$_{c2}$ = 2. This unusual magnetic behavior can be explained by considering the structural peculiarities of the materials, especially the distorted Cu-halide tetrahedra, which support a site-selective replacement of Cl- by Br- ions. Consequently, the critical concentrations x$_{c1}$ (x$_{c2}$) mark particularly interesting systems, where one (two) halidesublattice positions are fully occupied., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

The low-temperature magnetic phase diagram of the multiferroic system FeTe$_2$O$_5$Br down to 300 mK and up to 9 T is presented. Short-range magnetic correlations within the crystal layers start to develop already at $\sim$50 K, i.e., far above $T_{N1} \sim$ 11.0 K, where the system undergoes a magnetic phase transition into the high-temperature incommensurate (HT-ICM) phase. Only 0.5 K lower, at $T_{N2}$, the system undergoes a second phase transition into the low-temperature incommensurate amplitude-modulated (LT-ICM) phase accompanied by a spontaneous electric polarization. When the magnetic field is applied, the transition temperatures shift depending on the field orientation. In the case of $B||b$ and $B >$ 4.5 T, the HT-ICM phase disappears along with the electric polarization in the LT-ICM phase. The field dependence of the magnetic transition temperatures is explained in the context of the magnetic susceptibility behavior. Similarities and differences between the novel amplitude-modulated and well-established helicoidal magnetoelectrics are discussed.

Here we report on a "new" type of ordering which allows to modify the electronic structure of a graphene monolayer (ML). We have intercalated small gold clusters between the top monolayer graphene and the buffer layer of epitaxial graphene. We show that these clusters perturb the quasiparticles on the ML graphene, and act as quantum dots creating a superlattice of resonators on the graphene ML, as revealed by a strong pattern of standing waves. A detailed analysis of the standing wave patterns using Fourier Transform Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy strongly indicates that this phenomenon can arise from a strong modification of the band structure of graphene and (or) from Charge Density Waves (CDW)where a large extension of Van Hove singularities are involved., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Using an adapted Sn-flux growth technique we obtained comparatively large CeFeAsO single crystals of better quality than previously reported polycrystals or single crystals, as evidenced by much sharper anomalies at the structural and magnetic phase transitions as well as a much higher residual resistivity ratio of 12. In the magnetically ordered phase we observe a very pronounced metallic behavior of the in-plane resistivity, which excludes a Mott insulator regime at low temperature. The separation Delta_T = T_0 - T_N between structural and magnetic ordering temperatures decreases with increasing sample quality, from 18 K in the initial reports to 6 K in the present single crystals, demonstrating that this separation is not an intrinsic property of the RFeAsO systems. Our results indicate that the coupling between magnetic ordering and structural distortion is very similar in AFe2As2 and RFeAsO type of compounds, much more similar than previously thought. Single crystals of CeFeAsO, large enough to study the anisotropy of the magnetic properties, were grown by an optimized Sn-flux technique. The high quality of our single crystals is apparent from the highest residual resistivity ratio, RRR = 12, reported among undoped RFeAsO compounds (R=rare earth) as well as sharp anomalies in resistivity, specific heat, C(T), and thermal expansion at the different phase transitions. The magnetic susceptibility chi(T) presents a large easy-plane anisotropy consistent with the lowest crystal electric field doublet having a dominant Gamma_6 character. Curie-Weiss like susceptibilities for magnetic field parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis do not reveal an influence of a staggered field on the Ce site induced by magnetic ordering of the Fe. Furthermore, the standard signatures for antiferromagnetic order of Ce at T_N = 3.7 K observed in chi(T) and C(T) are incompatible with a Zeeman splitting Delta = 10 K of the CEF ground state doublet at low temperature due to the Fe-magnetic order as previously proposed. Our results can be reconciled with the earlier observation by assuming a comparatively stronger effect of the Ce-Ce exchange leading to a reduction of this Zeeman splitting below 15 K., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, added section on magn. susceptibility

The spin-liquid candidate $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$ has been studied by measuring the uniaxial expansion coefficients $\alpha_{i}$, the specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility. Special emphasis was placed on the mysterious anomaly around 6 K - a potential spin-liquid instability. Distinct and strongly anisotropic lattice effects have been observed at 6 K, clearly identifying this feature as a second-order phase transition. Owing to the large anomalies in $\alpha_{i}$, the application of Gr\"{u}neisen scaling has enabled us to determine the corresponding specific heat contribution and the entropy release. Comparison of the latter with available spin models suggests that spin degrees of freedom alone cannot account for the phase transition.
