Here, we report an optimization of the extraction of crystal violet and congo red dyes from shrimp samples, employing matrix solid phase dispersion and improved multivariate optimization. Three factors were evaluated: (i) adsorbent nature (neutral alumina, silica gel and C18); (ii) eluent strength (dimethylformamide, methanol and acetonitrile); and (iii) sample-adsorbent ratio (1:1; 1:5; and 1:10, m/m). Successful extraction of dyes was achieved using dimethylformamide as eluent, neutral alumina as adsorbent and sample:adsorbent ratio of 1:5 (m/m). Adsorption and kinetic studies suggest strong interaction between dye and adsorbent. Furthermore, employing digital image colorimetric detection, the study observed limit of detection (LOD) ranging between 3.8 to 29.8 µg L − 1 and limit of quantification (LOQ) ranging between 12.3 to 90.3 µg L − 1 with R2 > 0.9927 for both dyes, CV and CR, respectively. Notably, recovery was greater than 86 % with a relative standard deviation (RSD) inferior to 7 % (n = 3). These findings indicate the effectiveness of the improved multivariate optimization technique in conjunction with matrix solid-phase dispersion for successful extraction and quantification of dyes from shrimp samples, showing its potential for accurate and sensitive detection in similar analyses. The proposed method was compared with the gold method (UV/Vis spectroscopy) and the statistical treatment showed that the results of both methods are comparable.

Abstract The assessment of emotional intelligence is limited by the lack of psychometrically valid instruments. The present study aimed at cross-culturally adapting and validating the Emotional Intelligence Self-perception Questionnaire (EIQ-SP) in samples of Brazilian and Portuguese university students. Within this scope, in a sample of 1,074 students, reliability, construct-related validity, and criterion-related validity were analyzed. Additionally, metric invariance between the two samples and between genders was assessed. EIQ-SP showed appropriate psychometric qualities in its validation for use in Brazil, maintaining Mayer and Salovey’s four-branch model. With a short application time, simple and objective language, its small number of questions makes it an attractive and valuable instrument to investigate Emotional Intelligence.

BackgroundImmunoglobulin A (IgA) is the mammalian mucosal antibody, providing an important line of defense against pathogens. With 15 IgA subclasses, the European rabbit has an extremely complex IgA system, strikingly more complex than most other mammals, which have only one IgA or, in the case of hominoids, two IgA subclasses. Similar to the two hominoid primate IGHA genes, the expansion of the rabbit IGHA genes appears to have begun in an ancestral lagomorph since multiple IgA copies were found by Southern blot analysis for the genera Sylvilagus, Lepus, and Ochotona.ResultsTo gain a better insight into the extraordinary lagomorph IgA evolution, we sequenced, for the first time, expressed IgA genes for two Lepus species, L. europaeus and L. granatensis. These were aligned with the 15 rabbit IgA isotypes, and evolutionary analyses were conducted. The obtained phylogenetic tree shows that the Lepus IgA sequences cluster with and among the rabbit IgA isotypes, and the interspecies and intraspecies nucleotide genetic distances are similar. A comparison of the amino acid sequences of the Lepus and rabbit IgA confirms that there are two trans-species polymorphisms and that the rabbit and Lepus sequences share a common genetic pool. In fact, the main differences between the studied leporids IgAs reside in the characteristics of the hinge region.ConclusionThe Lepus IgA sequences we have obtained strongly suggest that the great expansion of the leporid IGHA genes occurred in a common ancestral species and was then maintained in the descendants. A strong selective pressure caused the extraordinary expansion of the IGHA genes but then subsided, leading to the maintenance of the acquired polymorphisms in the descendants, with little subsequent divergence. This is a unique evolutionary pattern in which an ancient gene expansion has been maintained for approximately 18 million years.

ABSTRACT. The prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD) tends to increase worldwide in the coming decades. Thus, the incidence of falls is likely to increase, with a relevant burden on the health care system. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate clinical factors and drug use associated with falls in PD patients. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study at the Movement Disorders outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital in Northeast Brazil. We performed structured interviews to collect sociodemographic and clinical data. Functional capacity was assessed using the Schwab and England Activities of Daily Living Scale and the modified Hoehn and Yahr Staging Scale. We divided the study sample into non-fallers (no falls) and fallers (≥1 fall), and non-recurrent (≤1 fall) and recurrent fallers (>1 fall). Results: The study population comprised 327 PD patients (48% women), with a mean age of 70 years. The mean disease duration was 9.9±6.9 years. The most prevalent comorbidities were depression (47.2%), hypertension (44.0%), and type 2 diabetes mellitus (21.5%). The logistic regression analysis revealed that hallucinations, amantadine, and catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitors (entacapone) were independently associated with falls in PD patients. Also, hallucinations, dyskinesia, and the use of amantadine were independently associated with recurrent falls. Conclusions: Health care providers play an essential role in fall prevention in PD patients, particularly by identifying older adults experiencing dyskinesia and visual hallucinations. Prospective studies should investigate the use of amantadine as a risk factor for falls in PD patients.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Pulse wave velocity is used to diagnose central arterial stiffness (CAS) and quantify healthy vascular aging (HVA). Objective: To evaluate the CAS and HVA in elderly patients with systemic blood pressure levels classified as optimal/normal. Methods: A total of 102 patients without comorbidities and with systolic pressure (SP) < 120 mmHg and diastolic pressure (DP) < 80 mmHg were selected from the EVOPIU database (Pulse Wave Velocity of Elderly Individuals in an Urban area of Brazil). The carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (c-fPWV) and the central and peripheral pressures were evaluated in all patients. The patients were divided into four groups: G1: (n = 19, with c-fPWV < 7.6 m/s, without medication), G2 (n = 26, c-fPWV ≥ 7.6 m/s; without medication), G3 (n = 25, c-fPWV < 7.6 m/s with antihypertensive medication), and G4 (n = 32, c-fPWV ≥ 7.6 m/s with antihypertensive medication). Results: In our sample, 56.7% of patients had c-fPWV ≥ 7.6 m/s. The central systolic pressure in G1 [99 (10) mmHg] was lower than that found in the other three groups [vs. 112 (14) mmHg, 111 (15), 112 (20) mmHg; P < 0.05)]. Conclusion: Older people with optimal arterial blood pressure do not necessarily have HVA and could have c-fPWV values close to the limits established for CAS diagnosis.

Abstract Considering the environment of risks and influences inherent in the decision-making process for credit-granting operations, it has become a matter of survival for financial organizations to seek to improve how they engage in effective decision-making to ensure that their returns on invested capital will meet the expectations established at the beginning of the process. A credit-granting sorting model for financial organizations is proposed. The model aggregates the perspectives of different decision-makers to support an organization in the process of credit analysis and, consequently, to improve its operationality. The decision-making model is based on the ELECTRE TRI-B multicriteria method. It sorts credit-granting proposals into three classes, namely credit approved, technical analysis, and credit rejected. The group decision emerges from the decision rules of the organization’s executive board. This new proposed approach to dealing with credit-granting results in the systematization of credit analysis, reduction of doubt among decision-makers, avoidance of the emergence of informal groups, reduction of conflicts within a financial organization, and external interferences.

Studies using the European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus contributed to elucidating numerous fundamental aspects of antibody structure and diversification mechanisms and continue to be valuable for the development and testing of therapeutic humanized polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies. Additionally, during the last two decades, the use of the European rabbit as an animal model has been increasingly extended to many human diseases. This review documents the continuing wide utility of the rabbit as a reliable disease model for development of therapeutics and vaccines and studies of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying many human diseases. Examples include syphilis, tuberculosis, HIV-AIDS, acute hepatic failure and diseases caused by noroviruses, ocular herpes, and papillomaviruses. The use of rabbits for vaccine development studies, which began with Louis Pasteur's rabies vaccine in 1881, continues today with targets that include the potentially blinding HSV-1 virus infection and HIV-AIDS. Additionally, two highly fatal viral diseases, rabbit hemorrhagic disease and myxomatosis, affect the European rabbit and provide unique models to understand co-evolution between a vertebrate host and viral pathogens.

BackgroundThe transcytosis of polymeric immunoglobulins, IgA and IgM, across the epithelial barrier to the luminal side of mucosal tissues is mediated by the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR). At the luminal side the extracellular ligand binding region of pIgR, the secretory component (SC), is cleaved and released bound to dimeric IgA (dIgA), protecting it from proteolytic degradation, or in free form, protecting the mucosa form pathogens attacks. The pIgR was first cloned for rabbit in early 1980’s and since then has been described for all vertebrates, from fish to mammals. The existence of more than one functional pIgR alternative-spliced variant in the European rabbit, the complete pIgR as other mammals and a shorter pIgR lacking two SC exons, raised the question whether other lagomorphs share the same characteristics and how has the PIGR gene evolved in these mammals.ResultsTo investigate these questions, we sequenced expressed pIgR genes for other leporid genus, Lepus spp., and obtained and aligned pIgR sequences from representative species of all mammalian orders. The obtained mammalian phylogeny, as well as the Bayesian inference of evolutionary rates and genetic distances, show that Lagomorpha pIgR is evolving at a higher substitution rate. Codon-based analyses of positive selection show that mammalian pIgR is evolving under strong positive selection, with strong incidence in the domains excised from the rabbit short pIgR isoform. We further confirmed that the hares also express the two rabbit pIgR isoforms.ConclusionsThe Lagomorpha pIgR unique evolutionary pattern may reflect a group specific adaptation. The pIgR evolution may be linked to the unusual expansion of IgA genes observed in lagomorphs, or to neofunctionalization in this group. Further studies are necessary to clarify the driving forces behind the unique lagomorph pIgR evolution.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the demographic and clinical profile of 1-to-5year head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors, and they oral features that could affect QoL. Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, medical records of 184 were reviewed concerning demographic, clinical and tumour characteristics. 40 of them underwent a quality of life (QoL) questionnaire and assessment of xerostomia (XA), using the oral health impact profile -14 (OHIP-14) and the xerostomia inventory (XI). Salivary flow was determined by measurement of stimulated whole salivary flow rate (SWSFR) and the number of teeth (NT) by determining the number of extracted and/or lost teeth. One-sample t-test, absolute and relative frequencies and Spearman’s correlation test was used for statistical analysis of data. Results: Most HNC patients were male, aged between 50 and 60 years, alcohol and tobacco users, with low educational attainment, several comorbidities, and pharyngeal tumours. The high scores in the OHIP-14 (23.82±14.0) and XI (39.2±7.6) indicated that most patients had their QoL adversely affected and had xerostomia. Mean SWSFR was 0.2mL/ min, and 15% (n=28) of patients were edentulous. The Spearman test showed a significant correlation between QoL and xerostomia, and salivary flow and QoL. Conclusion: This study evaluated characteristics of head and neck cancers (HNC) concerning demographic, clinical and tumour characteristics, quality of life (QoL), xerostomia, salivary flow, and number of teeth (NT) through an observational and cross-sectional study.

Abstract Background TGFβ signaling exerts context-specific effects in breast cancer (BC) pathogenesis and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in TGFβ-signaling components play a role in the genetic control of their expression and in BC susceptibility and clinical presentation. However, studies investigating the association between the TGFβ-signaling molecules and BC prognosis rarely considered disease subtypes and SNPs. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the expression of TGFβ-signaling components in BC tissue from patients with available data regarding TGFB1 and TGFBR2 SNPs and plasmatic TGFβ1 levels. Methods Immunostaining for TGFβ1, TGFβRII and phosphorylated (p)-SMAD2/3 was investigated in primary tumor tissue from 34 patients with luminal-B-HER2+ (LB-HER2), HER2-enriched (HER2) and triple negative (TN) BC subtypes genotyped for TGFB1 (rs1800468, rs1800469, rs1800470 and rs1800471) and TGFBR2 (rs3087465) SNPs. Results Strong positive correlations were observed between TGFβ1, TGFβRII and p-SMAD2/3 in tumor tissue, and an inverse correlation was observed between intratumor and plasmatic TGFβ1 levels in TN BCs. In LB-HER2+ tumors, p-SMAD2/3 was associated with older age at diagnosis and inversely correlated with p53 staining and lymph-node metastasis, while tumor-size negatively correlated with TGFβ1 and TGFβRII in this BC subgroup. Also, in p53-negative BCs, tumor size and Ki67 negatively correlated with both TGFβ1, TGFβRII and p-SMAD2/3. No correlation was found between SNPs and TGFβ1-signaling components expression. Conclusion TGFβ1 canonical signaling is activated in approximately half of BCs, and correlation between TGFβ components indicate a paracrine activation, which may exert tumor suppressor effects in p53-negative or Luminal-B-HER2+ subgroups.

Abstract Background The term “Tolosa-Hunt syndrome” (THS) has been used to refer to painful ophthalmoplegia associated with nonspecific inflammation of the cavernous sinus and many processes can result in a similar clinical picture, including infectious, inflammatory and neoplastic diseases. Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a lymphoproliferative disorder that rarely affects the central nervous system. We report a case of isolated CNS Rosai-Dorfman disease involving the cavernous sinus and presenting as “Tolosa-Hunt syndrome”. Case presentation Our patient presented with horizontal diplopia due to impairment of cranial nerves III, IV and VI and a stabbing/throbbing headache predominantly in the left temporal and periorbitary regions. There was a nonspecific enlargement of the left cavernous sinus on MRI and the patient had a dramatic response to steroids. Biopsy of a frontal meningeal lesion was compatible with RDD. Conclusions We highlight the importance of including Rosai-Dorfman disease as a differential diagnosis in cavernous sinus syndrome and demonstrate a satisfactory long-term response to steroid treatment in this disease.

Road accidents are a worldwide problem, affecting millions of people annually. One way to reduce such accidents is to predict risk areas and alert drivers. Advanced research has been carried out on identifying accident-influencing factors and potential highway risk areas to mitigate the number of road accidents. Machine learning techniques have been used to build prediction models using a supervised classification based on a labeled dataset. In this work, we experimented with many machine learning algorithms to discover the best classifier for the Brazilian federal road hotspots associated with severe or nonsevere accident risk using several features. We tested with SVM, random forest, and a multi-layer perceptron neural network. The dataset contains a ten-year road accident report by the Brazilian Federal Highway Police. The feature set includes spatial footprint, weekday and time when the accident happened, road type, route, orientation, weather conditions, and accident type. The results were promising, and the neural network model provided the best results, achieving an accuracy of 83%, a precision of 84%, a recall of 83%, and an F1-score of 82%.

The study aimed to estimate sex differences in body mass index (BMI), motor competence (MC), health-related physical fitness (HRPF), perceived motor competence (PMC), and physical activity (PA) and to identify individual predictors associated with overweight in Brazilian children. A cross-sectional study was conducted, sampling 217 Brazilian children aged between 6-10 years old. PA was measured through pedometers. MC and PMC were estimated, respectively, by the Test of Gross Motor Development (second edition) battery and the Pictographic Scale of Perceived Competence Assessment in Motor Skills, while the HRPF was estimated through abdominal, upper limb and lower strength, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory fitness tests. Height and weight were measured, and BMI was computed. Statistical analyses involved the use of the Mann Whitney U test and multiple logistic regression. Sex differences were observed for HRPF score, mean of weekend steps and total steps/week, favouring boys (p< 0.05). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that MC (OR= 0.97; 95%CI 0.92–0.98) and HRPF (OR= 0.78; 95%CI 0.66–0.93) were significantly associated with overweight, while any significant association were observed for PA and PMC. Results highlight that increases in MC and HRPF reduced the chances of children being overweight.

Immunoglobulin A provides a major line of defence against pathogens and plays a key role in the maintenance of the commensal microbiota in the intestinal tract. Having been shown to be more effective at tumour cell killing than IgG and strongly active against pathogens present in the mucosae, IgA antibodies have been attracting significant attention in recent years for use as therapeutic antibodies. To improve their therapeutic potential, bioengineered IgA forms with increased serum half-life and neutralizing abilities have been developed but the IgA hinge, which impacts susceptibility to bacterial proteases and ability to bridge between target and effector cells, has not yet been explored. The European rabbit has 15 IgA subclasses with exclusive hinge region motifs and varying lengths, constituting a unique model to evaluate the functional capabilities offered by incorporation of longer IgA hinges into immunoglobulins. Hinge regions from rabbit IgAs, featuring different lengths and sequences, were inserted into human IgA1 heavy chain to substitute the IgA1 hinge. These hinges did not appear to affect antigen binding nor the ability of the engineered chimeric IgA1 to bind and trigger FcαRI, as detected by IgA-mediated cell agglutination and release of superoxide by neutrophils. All rabbit hinge-human IgA1 hybrids were resistant to Clostridrum ramosum IgA protease enzyme digestion, as predicted by the lack of the cleavage site in the rabbit hinges. Some IgA1s featuring long rabbit hinges were cleaved by Neisseria meningitidis IgA1 protease cleavage type 1 or 2 enzymes, despite the lack of the predicted cleavage sites. More interestingly, the hybrid featuring the rabbit IgA15 hinge was not affected by any of the IgA proteases. The IgA15 hinge is longer than that found in human IgA1 and is composed by a unique motif with a stretch of nine consecutive Ser residues. These characteristics allow the preservation of a long hinge, with associated ability to bridge distantly spaced antigens and provide higher avidity binding, while remaining resistant to IgA protease degradation. The data suggest that the rabbit Cα15 hinge represents an interesting alternative hinge sequence for therapeutic human IgA antibodies that remains resistant to proteolytic cleavage.

Irrigation is a useful tool to achieve a better productivity and quality foods, which contributes to a higher efficient use of agriculture land. Drip irrigation is characterized by higher application efficiency, providing an efficient control of the irrigation depth required. Moreover, it has advantages such as lower evaporation loss and higher crop yields when associated with fertigation. However, dripper clogging is pointed out by several authors as the main limiting factor for a rapid adoption of drip irrigation on a larger scale. Emitter clogging susceptibility depends basically on five parameters: water quality, filtration system, fertilizer quality, labyrinth architectural layout and maintenance procedures. The adoption of chemical treatments helps to control biological agents and precipitates, making it possible to minimize the risk of clogging. This paper aims to understand how drip clogging process occurs, providing scientific arguments and support on the development of a standardized test pattern, making progress in order to identify commercial emitters that are less susceptible to clogging under field conditions.

Abstract Background Erdheim–Chester disease (ECD) is a non-Langerhans histiocytosis that results in multi-organ disease involving the skin, bones, lungs and kidneys. Central nervous system (CNS) involvement occurs in about 50 % of patients, and diabetes insipidus, visual disturbances, and cerebellar ataxia are the most frequent neurological signs. We report a case of Erdheim-Chester disease with central nervous system involvement in the form of enhancing intracranial mass lesions with massive edema. Case presentation The patient presented with vertigo, ataxia, encephalopathy and pyramidal signs. Diagnosis was suggested by xanthomatous skin lesions and a biopsy was compatible with Erdheim-Chester disease demonstrating xanthogranulomas CD68 positive (clone KP1) and CD1a and S100 negative. Testing for BRAF mutation was negative, which precluded treatment with Vemurafenib. Treatment with steroids and interferon resulted in improvement of neurological signs and regression of edema on MRI. Conclusions The diagnosis of Erdheim-Chester disease should be considered in intracranial mass lesions. Xanthomatous skin lesions are a clue to the diagnosis.

The association between mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV)-like sequences and human breast cancer (BC) is largely documented in the literature, but further research is needed to determine how they influence carcinogenesis. APOBEC3 cytidine deaminases are viral restriction factors that have been implicated in cancer mutagenesis, and a germline deletion that results in the fusion of the APOBEC3A coding region with the APOBEC3B 3′-UTR has been linked to increased mutagenic potential, enhanced risk of BC development, and poor prognosis. However, little is known about factors influencing APOBEC3 family activation in cancer. Thus, we hypothesized that MMTV infection and APOBEC3-mediated mutagenesis may be linked in the pathogenesis of BC. We investigated APOBEC3A/B genotyping, MMTV-like positivity, and clinicopathological parameters of 209 BC patients. We show evidence for active APOBEC3-mediated mutagenesis in human-derived MMTV sequences and comparatively investigate the impact of APOBEC3A/B germline deletion in MMTV-like env positive and negative BC in a Brazilian cohort. In MMTV-like negative samples, APOBEC3A/B deletion was negatively correlated with tumor stage while being positively correlated with estrogen receptor expression. Although APOBEC3A/B was not associated with MMTV-like positivity, samples carrying both MMTV-like positivity and APOBEC3A/B deletion had the lowest age-at-diagnosis of all study groups, with all patients being less than 50 years old. These results indicate that APOBEC3 mutagenesis is active against MMTV-like sequences, and that APOBEC3A/B deletion might act along with the MMTV-like presence to predispose people to early-onset BC.

Background Aging increases the risk of chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases, leading to changes in cardiovascular anatomy and physiology even in the absence of other comorbidities. Numerous cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs), such as diabetes mellitus (DM) and systemic arterial hypertension (SAH), can modify the functional and structural properties of large vessels, increasing arterial stiffness. Objective To determine whether elderly patients with hypertension with DM have greater central arterial stiffness than elderly patients with SAH without DM. Methods The Study of Pulse Wave Velocity in the Elderly in an Urban Area in Brazil (EVOPIU) included 1,192 patients aged ≥ 60 years who underwent applanation tonometry (AT) to evaluate carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV). From this database, 1,133 patients were selected from 6 groups: NDN (nondiabetic normotensives; n: 127); DN (diabetic normotensives; n: 64); NDCH (nondiabetic controlled hypertensives; n: 168); DCH (diabetic controlled hypertensives; n: 275); NDH (nondiabetic hypertensives; n: 217) and DH (diabetic hypertensives; n: 282). All groups underwent AT to obtain cfPWV and central and peripheral arterial pressures. Results The pulse wave velocities found were as follows: NDN vs DN (8.9 ± 0.2 m/s vs 9.4 ± 0.2; P = .103); NDCH vs DCH (9.0 ± 0.2 m/s vs. 9.6 ± 0.1 m/s; P= .04) and NDH vs DH (9.2 ± 0.1 m/s vs. 9.6 ± 0.1 m/s; P= .045). When the diabetic groups were compared, there were no differences in cfPWV values, and the same occurred when the nondiabetic groups were compared. Conclusions Elderly patients with diabetes and hypertension have greater central arterial stiffness than patients without diabetes and hypertension, regardless of systemic blood pressure control. The central arterial stiffness caused by vascular aging seems to be a common factor among all the studied groups.

Abstract: The physiological priming has been used to standardize and increase the speed of development of seed lots. The use of this technique is essential in coffee cultivation, as the crop has low longevity associated with slow and uneven germination. The objective was to evaluate the effect of physiological priming on the physiological quality of coffee seeds stored with different water contents. Seeds of two cultivars of Coffea arabica were used: cv. Catuaí Vermelho IAC144 and Topázio MG1190. A portion of the seeds were dried in the shade until reaching 12% moisture, and the other did not undergo drying. The seeds were stored in a cold chamber at 10 °C for nine months. Every three months, the physiological priming technique was performed with subsequent evaluation of the physiological quality by germination tests, root protrusion, normal seedlings at fifteen days, strong normal seedlings, seedlings with expanded cotyledonary leaves and seedling dry weight. Seeds that did not undergo drying subjected to the physiological priming technique maintained physiological quality after nine months of storage. Physiological priming was detrimental to dry seeds stored for nine months.

ABSTRACT Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques have become an important tool for investigating and predicting flow behavior in many industrial and engineering processes. In the last two decades, CFD has been used for the study, design, and improvement of irrigation equipment. Numerical simulations can be used to predict fluid flow, heat transfer, and chemical reactions within complex systems. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of the uses of CFD in irrigation engineering applications. The paper is organized into two main sections: fundamentals of CFD and irrigation engineering applications. The first section presents the main methods used in numerical simulations, basic equations to predict fluid flow parameters, meshing concerns, and convergence criteria. In the second section, we present applications related to friction and local head losses in pipes, liquid and solid-liquid flow simulation in drippers, chemical scaling, filters, sprinklers, direct-acting pressure-regulating valves, and Venturi injectors. The briefly described applications indicated that CFD modeling can be an accurate, quick, and feasible method for the investigation of flow parameters in irrigation pipes, fittings, emitters, and accessories. The CFD simulations can be useful for designing new products as well as for improving and optimizing existing products. Computational fluid dynamics uses in irrigation engineering must be encouraged, particularly for innovation purposes resulting from the cooperation between academia and irrigation companies.

Abstract: Introduction: Given the high prevalence of polypharmacy patients, it is paramount that they be handled with an effective therapeutic alliance and with safe and feasible treatments. Empathy towards the patient is essential, and the lack of prescriber experience may hamper such bond. Objectives: This study simulates a polypharmacy regimen among medical students, aiming to promote reflections about the daily challenges faced by patients. Methods: It is a prospective study in a single, non-blind group. The participants were medical students and residents from our institution, all of whom followed a 7-day placebo prescription. They answered questionnaires on their perceptions of medication adherence and concordance before and after the simulation. Results: twenty-eight volunteers participated, 27 of which (96.4%) forgot to take at least one pill during the experiment. Among the lower undergraduates, 28.57% interrupted at least one medication. As for the higher undergraduates and residents, this happened with 71.43% of them. There were more adherence failures than predicted by the participants themselves. In realistic dosages, levothyroxine, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and metformin were the drugs reported to be the most difficult. 96% of the volunteers strongly agreed that doctor and patient’s agreement regarding the treatment correlates with good adherence. Conclusion: Understanding the factors that affect adherence and how to handle them is essential for a doctor, as well as a good bond with the patient. The teaching of these abilities is very necessary. Further studies are needed to reach more undergraduate students and to highlight the relevance of simulations in the medical education setting.

Abstract: In the industrial maintenance field, critical tasks are activities that can endanger operating processes and cause serious accidents if not performed correctly. These tasks are typically performed by professionals with a considerable level of knowledge and rely on prescribed procedures that flag the task, drawing the attention of task performers. Given the importance of reviewing work procedures and monitoring tasks for human error prevention, this study analyzed similarities and differences in the visual attention of expert and novice task performers while following procedures with and without flagging of a critical task. The study included 48 maintenance professionals, divided into two groups of performers: experts and novices. For attention analysis, eye-tracking technology was used to monitor their observation during the work procedure, recording data on time to first fixation, total fixation time and number of visits. The results indicate that in the procedure without flagging of the critical task, the numbers of fixations on and visits to the stages of the task were higher in the novice than in the expert group. In the flagged procedure, the visual attention of experts and novices was similar when considering all stages of the task. In conclusion, the tasks must be revised between the two groups, and the flagged procedure can be used as a guide for work monitoring, helping experts or novices to more easily select relevant information.
