Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Ovarian cancer has the worst overall survival rate of all gynecologic malignancies. For the majority of patients, the 5-year overall survival rate of less than 50% has hardly improved over the last decades. To improve the outcome of patients with all subtypes of ovarian cancer, large-scale fundamental and translational research is needed. To accommodate these types of ovarian cancer research, we have established a Dutch nationwide, interdisciplinary infrastructure and biobank: the Archipelago of Ovarian Cancer Research (AOCR). The AOCR will facilitate fundamental and translational ovarian cancer research and enhance interdisciplinary, national, and international collaboration. DESIGN: The AOCR biobank is a prospective ovarian cancer biobank in which biomaterials are collected, processed, and stored in a uniform matter for future (genetic) scientific research. All 19 Dutch hospitals in which ovarian cancer surgery is performed participate and collaborate in the AOCR biobank. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: Patients of 16 years and older with suspected or diagnosed ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer are recruited for participation. Patients who agree to participate give written informed consent for collection, storage, and issue of their biomaterials for future studies. After inclusion, different blood samples are taken at various predefined time points both before and during treatment. In case of a diagnostic paracentesis or biopsy, the residual biomaterials of these procedures are stored in the biobank. During surgery, primary tumor tissue and, if applicable, tissue from metastatic sites are collected and stored. From each patient, a representative histological hematoxylin and eosin stained slide is digitalized for research purposes, including reassessment by a panel of gynecologic pathologists. Abstract

Objectives: Ovarian cancer has the worst overall survival rate of all gynecologic malignancies. For the majority of patients, the 5-year overall survival rate of less than 50% has hardly improved over the last decades. To improve the outcome of patients with all subtypes of ovarian cancer, large-scale fundamental and translational research is needed. To accommodate these types of ovarian cancer research, we have established a Dutch nationwide, interdisciplinary infrastructure and biobank: the Archipelago of Ovarian Cancer Research (AOCR). The AOCR will facilitate fundamental and translational ovarian cancer research and enhance interdisciplinary, national, and international collaboration. Design: The AOCR biobank is a prospective ovarian cancer biobank in which biomaterials are collected, processed, and stored in a uniform matter for future (genetic) scientific research. All 19 Dutch hospitals in which ovarian cancer surgery is performed participate and collaborate in the AOCR biobank. Participants/Materials, Setting, Methods: Patients of 16 years and older with suspected or diagnosed ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer are recruited for participation. Patients who agree to participate give written informed consent for collection, storage, and issue of their biomaterials for future studies. After inclusion, different blood samples are taken at various predefined time points both before and during treatment. In case of a diagnostic paracentesis or biopsy, the residual biomaterials of these procedures are stored in the biobank. During surgery, primary tumor tissue and, if applicable, tissue from metastatic sites are collected and stored. From each patient, a representative histological hematoxylin and eosin stained slide is digitalized for research purposes, including reassessment by a panel of gynecologic pathologists. Clinical and pathological data are obtained on a per-study basis from Dutch registries. Research proposals for the issue of biomaterials and data are evaluated by both the Archipelago Scientific Committee and the Steering Committee. Researchers using the biomaterials from the AOCR biobank are encouraged to enrich the biobank with data and materials resulting from their analyses and experiments. Limitations: The implementation and first 4 years of collection are financed by an infrastructural grant from the Dutch Cancer Society. Therefore, the main limitation is that the costs for sustaining the biobank after the funding period will have to be covered. This coverage will come from incorporation of budget for biobanking in future grant applications and from fees from external researchers and commercial parties using the biomaterials stored in the AOCR biobank. Moreover, we will apply for grants aimed at sustaining and improving research infrastructures and biobanks. Conclusions: With the establishment of the Dutch nationwide, interdisciplinary Archipelago of Ovarian Cancer Research infrastructure and biobank, fundamental and translational research on ovarian cancer can be greatly improved. The ultimate aim of this infrastructure is that it will lead to improved diagnostics, treatment, and survival of patients with ovarian cancer.

43. The Banality of Digital Reputation: A Visual Ethnography of Young People, Reputation, and Social Media

Abstract

This article relies on a visual ethnography with young people between 13 and 20 years old. Young people were asked to make visual collages of fictional social media accounts, which are used in this article to analyse the signification of "good" and "bad" reputation in digital youth culture. It explores how reputation is performed visually and aesthetically in digital youth culture. The aim is to contribute to the critical study of digital reputation, it formulates an ethical critique on how the signification of digital reputation has formed alongside values and beliefs that support the growth of platform capitalism, rather than assigning a reputational value and rank responsibly. I conclude how the signification of digital reputation is not only conformist and essentialist but also meaningless. The banality of reputation argues that, in the context of popular social media, there is no real or substantial information made available to distinguish between a "good" or a "bad" reputation, except for stylized banality, a stylistic focus on lifestyle and commodities. The point is that reputation should not be banal and meaningless. Many important political and institutional decisions in a democracy rely on the evaluation of reputation and critical assessment of the information upon which such evaluations are made. Although platform capitalism has made digital reputation meaningless, it is in fact an essential skill to critically orient oneself in digital societies.

44. Contextualizing interpretative agency within the sociotechnical relations of data-driven media infrastructures

Abstract

There is much discussion in media and communication studies on the ever-growing power of digital media. Platforms are disrupting long-standing social institutions and markets (Van Dijck, et al. 2018), and people are increasingly dependent on data-driven infrastructures that mediate daily life (IPSP 2018) as well as perceiving and understanding their selves (Lupton 2016). Conceptualizing digital media as an infrastructure means that digital media must be seen as an existential mode for being a social subject (Peters 2015). This, we argue, is a gestalt shift in the conceptual imagination of the dominance of media power – cloud infrastructures have, for example, been described as a ‘colonization’ of life (Couldry and Mejias 2019). The ambiguity of media and datafication in particular urges us to ask questions of audiences’ agency and resistance, not only in terms of how people understand their datafied selves and their mediated lives, but also in terms of scale and potential power imbalances. Does the notion of users’ resistance and agency matter, considering that data-driven technologies offer so little opportunities for agency? Starting from how communicative agency is understood in audience studies, defined as the “capabilities to effect power potentials through interpretative engagements in everyday processes of communication, in relation to structures that take part in the same communicative processes” (Ytre-Arne & Das, 2020: 7), we ask how we can conceptually imagine and inquire into people’s agency to resist data-driven media infrastructures – large scale sociotechnical systems prominent in people’s everyday lives. This presentation engages with this question by exploring it theoretically and conceptually, drawing on several examples of studies of data-driven media and agency. Abstract

In deeply digitalised societies, ‘sexual reputations’ are seen to be most ‘threatened’. Digital technologies such as smartphone cameras and social media platforms can capture and distribute moments that damage people’s sexual reputations and statuses. In this chapter, we explore how young people’s mediated sexual intimacies are increasingly visible, mainly because of the emergence of popular visual social media (e.g., Instagram and Snapchat). Relying on visual research materials that young people between 13 and 20 years old produced during ethnographic research, we are particularly concerned with how increased visibility to unanticipated audiences has made young people more aware of the importance of a good digital reputation and has initiated more careful negotiations of sexual morality to protect their digital reputations. Our key finding is that managing a reputation is an intensive moral negotiation that is defined by various cultural discourses (e.g., gender, ethnicity, religiosity, sexuality). Moreover, we conclude that digital reputation can cause reputational harm to those young people that are not conforming to the sexual norms of their peer groups, social and family ties, and wider culture and society.
