Fungal lipolytic enzymes play crucial roles in various lipid bio-industry processes. Here, we elucidated the biochemical and structural characteristics of an unexplored fungal lipolytic enzyme (TaLip) from Thermoascus aurantiacus var. levisporus, a strain renowned for its significant industrial relevance in carbohydrate-active enzyme production. TaLip belongs to a poorly understood phylogenetic branch within the class 3 lipase family and prefers to hydrolyze mainly short-chain esters. Nonetheless, it also displays activity against natural long-chain triacylglycerols. Furthermore, our analyses revealed that the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) enhances the hydrolytic activity of TaLip on pNP butyrate by up to 5.0-fold. Biophysical studies suggest that interactions with SDS may prevent TaLip aggregation, thereby preserving the integrity and stability of its monomeric form and improving its performance. Zebrafish have become an important model animal for studying the emergence of collective behavior in nature. Here, we show how to properly analyze the polarization statistics to distinguish shoal regimes. In analogy with the statistical properties of optical speckles, we show that exponential and Rayleigh distributions emerge in shoals with many fish with uncorrelated velocity directions. In the opposite limit of just two fish, the polarization distribution peaks at high polarity, with the average value being a decreasing function of the shoal's size, even in the absence of correlations. We also perform a set of experiments unveiling two shoaling regimes. Large shoals behave as small domains with strong intra-domain and weak inter-domain correlations. A strongly correlated regime develops for small shoals. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a debilitating condition that can cause locomotor problems in affected patients, such as tremors and body rigidity. PD therapy often includes the use of monoamine oxidase B (MAOB) inhibitors, particularly phenylhalogen compounds and coumarin-based semi-synthetic compounds. The objective of this study was to analyze the structural, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic profile of a series of Triazolo Thiadiazepine-fused Coumarin Derivatives (TDCDs) against MAOB, in comparison with the inhibitor safinamide. To achieve this goal, we utilized structure-based virtual screening techniques, including target prediction and absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) prediction based on multi-parameter optimization (MPO) topological analysis, as well as ligand-based virtual screening techniques, such as docking and molecular dynamics. The findings indicate that the TDCDs exhibit structural similarity to other bioactive compounds containing coumarin and MAOB-binding azoles, which are present in the ChEMBL database. The topological analyses suggest that TDCD3 has the best ADME profile, particularly due to the alignment between low lipophilicity and high polarity. The coumarin and triazole portions make a strong contribution to this profile, resulting in a permeability with P app estimated at 2.15 × 10 -5  cm/s, indicating high cell viability. The substance is predicted to be metabolically stable. It is important to note that this is an objective evaluation based on the available data. Molecular docking simulations showed that the ligand has an affinity energy of - 8.075 kcal/mol with MAOB and interacts with biological substrate residues such as Pro102 and Phe103. The results suggest that the compound has a safe profile in relation to the MAOB model, making it a promising active ingredient for the treatment of PD., (© 2024. The use of biofuels has grown in the last decades as a consequence of the direct environmental impacts of fossil fuel use. Elucidating structure, diversity, species interactions, and assembly mechanisms of microbiomes is crucial for understanding the influence of environmental disturbances. However, little is known about how contamination with biofuel/petrofuel blends alters the soil microbiome. Here, we studied the dynamics in the soil microbiome structure and composition of four field areas under long-term contamination with biofuel/fossil fuel blends (ethanol 10% and gasoline 90%-E10; ethanol 25% and gasoline 75%-E25; soybean biodiesel 20% and diesel 80%-B20) submitted to different bioremediation treatments along a temporal gradient. Soil microbiomes from biodiesel-polluted areas exhibited higher richness and diversity index values and more complex microbial communities than ethanol-polluted areas. Additionally, monitored natural attenuation B20-polluted areas were less affected by perturbations caused by bioremediation treatments. As a consequence, once biostimulation was applied, the degradation was slower compared with areas previously actively treated. In soils with low diversity and richness, the impact of bioremediation treatments on the microbiomes was greater, and as a result, the hydrocarbon degradation extent was higher. The network analysis showed that all abundant keystone taxa corresponded to well-known degraders, suggesting that the abundant species are core targets for biostimulation in soil remediation processes. Altogether, these findings showed that the knowledge gained through the study of microbiomes in contaminated areas may help design and conduct optimized bioremediation approaches, paving the way for future rationalized and efficient pollutant mitigation strategies., (© 2024. Extracts from Mangifera indica leaves and its main component, mangiferin, have proven antidiabetic activity. In this study, mangiferin and its natural derivatives Homomangiferin (HMF), Isomangiferin (IMF), Neomangiferin (NMF), Glucomangiferin (GMF), Mangiferin 6'-gallate (MFG), and Norathyriol (NRT) were compared regarding their action on Diabetes mellitus (DM), employing docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to analyze interactions with the aldose reductase enzyme, the precursor to the conversion of glucose into sorbitol. Notably, HMF showed significant affinity to residues in the active site of the enzyme, including Trp 79, His 110, Trp 111, Phe 122, and Phe 300, with an energy of - 7.2 kcal/mol, observed in the molecular docking simulations. MD reinforced the formation of stable complexes for HMF and MFG with the aldose reductase, with interaction potential energies (IPE) in the order of - 300.812 ± 52 kJ/mol and - 304.812 ± 52 kJ/mol, respectively. The drug-likeness assessment, by multiparameter optimization (MPO), highlighted that HMF and IMF have similarities with polyphenols and glycosidic flavonoids recently patented as antidiabetics, revealing that high polarity (TPSA > 180 Å 2 ) is a favorable property for subcutaneous administration, especially because of the gradual passive cell permeability values in biological tissues, with P app values estimated at < 10 × 10 -6 cm/s. These compounds are metabolically stable against metabolic enzymes, resulting in a low toxic incidence by metabolic activation, corroborating with a lethal dose (LD 50 ) greater than 2000 mg/kg. Background: Literature meta-analysis results show that digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) combined with synthesized two-dimensional (s2D) mammograms can reduce recalls and improve breast cancer detection. Uncertainty regarding the screening of patients with breast cancer presents a health economic challenge, both in terms of healthcare resource use and quality of life impact on patients., Objective: This study aims to estimate the cost effectiveness of DBT + s2D versus digital mammography (DM) used in a biennial breast cancer screening setting of women aged 40-69 years with scattered areas of fibroglandular breast density and heterogeneous dense breasts in the Brazilian supplementary health system., Methods: A cost-effectiveness analysis was performed on the basis of clinical data obtained from a systematic review with meta-analysis performed to evaluate the analytical validity and clinical utility of DBT + s2D compared with DM. The search was conducted in the PubMed, Cochrane Library and Embase databases, with the main descriptors of the technology, a comparator, and the clinical condition in question, on 9 June 2022. The hybrid economic model (decision tree plus Markov model) simulated costs and outcomes over a lifetime for women aged 40-69 years with scattered areas of fibroglandular breast density and heterogeneous dense breasts. We analyzed incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) to measure the incremental cost difference per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) of adding DBT + s2D to breast cancer screening., Results: DBT + s2D incurred a cost saving of € 954.02 per patient, in the time horizon of 30 years, compared with DM, and gained 5.1989 QALYs, which would be considered a dominant intervention. These results were confirmed in sensitivity analyses., Conclusion: Switching from DM to biennial DBT + s2D was cost effective. Background and Objective: Reduced functional capacity, dyspnea, fatigue, and changes in body composition are common in patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS), and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation may improve these parameters. Thus, the present study verified the effects of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation (respiratory, aerobic, and resistance muscle training) on submaximal exercise tolerance, dyspnea, fatigue, and body composition., Methods: This controlled and randomized clinical trial applied a six-week outpatient intervention protocol in individuals over 18 years old (n = 33) with a diagnosis of COVID-19 confirmed by polymerase chain reaction. These individuals were allocated to cardiopulmonary rehabilitation (n = 17) or control groups (i.e., educational lectures; n = 16). The cardiopulmonary rehabilitation group performed respiratory, aerobic, and resistance muscle training. Submaximal exercise tolerance, dyspnea, fatigue, and body composition were assessed before and after the protocol., Results: After 6 weeks, the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation group increased the tolerance to submaximal exercise, with a difference of 100.46 m (95% confidence interval [CI]: 7.40-193 m) in the distance walked on the six-minute walk test, reduced dyspnea (-1.45, 95% CI: -1.98--0.92) in the modified Medical Research Council, and increased 0.63 kg (95% CI: 0.09-1.18 kg) of muscle mass in the upper limbs compared with the control group., Conclusion: The six-week cardiopulmonary rehabilitation protocol improved functional capacity, reduced dyspnea, and increased muscle mass in the upper limbs in individuals with PCS. Maneuvering a spacecraft in the cislunar space is a complex problem, since it is highly perturbed by the gravitational influence of both the Earth and the Moon, and possibly also the Sun. Trajectories minimizing the needed fuel are generally preferred in order to decrease the mass of the payload. A classical method to constrain maneuvers is mathematically modeling them using the Two Point Boundary Value Problem (TPBVP), defining spacecraft positions at the start and end of the trajectory. Solutions to this problem can then be obtained with optimization techniques like the nonlinear least squares conjugated with the Theory of Functional Connections (TFC) to embed the constraints, which recently became an effective method for deducing orbit transfers. In this paper, we propose a tangential velocity (TV) type of constraints to design orbital maneuvers. We show that the technique presented in this paper can be used to transfer a spacecraft (e.g. from the Earth to the Moon) and perform gravity assist maneuvers (e.g. a swing-by with the Moon). In comparison with the TPBVP, solving the TV constraints via TFC offers several advantages, leading to a significant reduction in computational time. Antarctica harbors a microbial diversity still poorly explored and of inestimable biotechnological value. Cold-adapted microorganisms can produce a diverse range of metabolites stable at low temperatures, making these compounds industrially interesting for biotechnological use. The present work investigated the biotechnological potential for antimicrobial and antitumor activity of filamentous fungi and bacteria isolated from marine sediment samples collected at Deception Island, Antarctica. A total of 89 microbial isolates were recovered from marine sediments and submitted to an initial screening for L-glutaminase with antitumoral activity and for antimicrobial metabolites. The isolates Pseudogymnoascus sp. FDG01, Pseudogymnoascus sp. FDG02, and Penicillium sp. FAD33 showed potential antiproliferative action against human pancreatic carcinoma cells while showing no toxic effect on non-tumor cells. The microbial extracts from unidentified three bacteria and four filamentous fungi showed antibacterial activity against at least one tested pathogenic bacterial strain. The isolate FDG01 inhibited four bacterial species, while the isolate FDG01 was active against Micrococcus luteus in the minimal inhibitory concentration of 0.015625 μg mL  -1 . The results pave the way for further optimization of enzyme production and characterization of enzymes and metabolites found and reaffirm Antarctic marine environments as a wealthy source of compounds potentially applicable in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry., (© 2024. Microorganisms that inhabit the cold Antarctic environment can produce ligninolytic enzymes potentially useful in bioremediation. Our study focused on characterizing Antarctic bacteria and fungi from marine sediment samples of King George and Deception Islands, maritime Antarctica, potentially affected by hydrocarbon influence, able to produce enzymes for use in bioremediation processes in environments impacted with petroleum derivatives. A total of 168 microorganism isolates were obtained: 56 from sediments of King George Island and 112 from Deception Island. Among them, five bacterial isolates were tolerant to cell growth in the presence of diesel oil and gasoline and seven fungal were able to discolor RBBR dye. In addition, 16 isolates (15 bacterial and one fungal) displayed enzymatic emulsifying activities. Two isolates were characterized taxonomically by showing better biotechnological results. Psychrobacter sp. BAD17 and Cladosporium sp. FAR18 showed pyrene tolerance (cell growth of 0.03 g mL -1 and 0.2 g mL -1 ) and laccase enzymatic activity (0.006 UL -1 and 0.10 UL -1 ), respectively. Our results indicate that bacteria and fungi living in sediments under potential effect of hydrocarbon pollution may represent a promising alternative to bioremediate cold environments contaminated with polluting compounds derived from petroleum such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and dyes., (© 2023. Brazilian Cerrado is recognised as a biodiversity hotspot due to the presence of endemic species with great biological potential. Particularly, Lomatozona artemisiifolia , is a rare species found in the Cerrado region in midwestern Brazil. Efforts have been made for its conservation in the Cerrado, such as the use of in vitro micropropagation, demanding a comparative analysis between grown plants and those collected from nature. For this purpose, we performed the chemical study of L. artemisiifolia by LC-ESI-MS/MS and molecular networking analysis in the Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking (GNPS) with in silico annotation using Network Annotation Propagation (NAP), which led to the observation of labdane diterpenes and flavonoid subclasses as the most representative specialised metabolites of this plant. In addition, molecular networking and chemometric analysis were correlated, allowing the metabolite profile emerging from field growth and micropropagation conditions to be observed.

Nirmatrelvir is an orally available inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro) and the main ingredient of Paxlovid, a drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for high-risk COVID-19 patients. Recently, a rare natural mutation, H172Y, was found to significantly reduce nirmatrelvir's inhibitory activity. As the COVID-19 cases skyrocket in China and the selective pressure of antiviral therapy builds in the US, there is an urgent need to characterize and understand how the H172Y mutation confers drug resistance. Here, we investigated the H172Y Mpro's conformational dynamics, folding stability, catalytic efficiency, and inhibitory activity using all-atom constant pH and fixed-charge molecular dynamics simulations, alchemical and empirical free energy calculations, artificial neural networks, and biochemical experiments. Our data suggest that the mutation significantly weakens the S1 pocket interactions with the N-terminus and perturbs the conformation of the oxyanion loop, leading to a decrease in the thermal stability and catalytic efficiency. Importantly, the perturbed S1 pocket dynamics weaken the nirmatrelvir binding in the P1 position, which explains the decreased inhibitory activity of nirmatrelvir. Our work demonstrates the predictive power of the combined simulation and artificial intelligence approaches, and together with biochemical experiments, they can be used to actively surveil continually emerging mutations of SARS-CoV-2 Mpro and assist the optimization of antiviral drugs. The presented approach, in general, can be applied to characterize mutation effects on any protein drug targets.

Purpose: To describe the femoral insertion of the ACL using the posterior proximal cartilage of the lateral femoral condyle as the anatomical reference., Methods: Twenty knees were dissected. The X-axis (deep-shallow) and Y-axis (high-low) were determined using the femoral diaphysis and the proximal cartilage of the lateral femoral condyle (point C) as a reference, which were easily identified by direct visualization through the anteromedial portal. The distances to the center of the anteromedial and posterolateral bands and to the center of the ACL were measured., Results: The mean distances were 7.2 mm (SD: 0.7) between the center of the anteromedial bundle and the Y-axis (AM-Y), 9 mm (SD: 1.1) between the center of the ACL and the Y-axis (M-Y), and 12.7 mm (SD: 0.9) between the center of the posterolateral bundle and the Y-axis (PL-Y). Regarding the distance (from point C to the distal cartilage along the X-axis), the center of the anteromedial bundle (AM) was 35% (SD: 4.9%), the center of the posterolateral bundle was 62% (SD: 3.7%), and the center of the ACL (M) was 44% (SD: 7%) of the CD distance on average., Conclusion: Given the similarity among the specimens in terms of the height of the ACL on the Y-axis in relation to the proximal posterior cartilage of the femoral lateral condyle (point C), this point can be used as an arthroscopic intraoperative parameter to define the position of the femoral tunnel in ACL reconstruction for single- or double-bundle techniques., (© 2022. Introduction: The breasts are a female symbol, impacts self-image and self-esteem. Breast reconstructive and oncoplastic surgeries have an important role in minimizing injuries. In Brazil less than a third of public health system (SUS) users have access to immediate reconstructive surgery. The low rate of breast reconstructions has multiple causes and the deficiency in availability and surgeons' technical qualification play a role. In 2010, the Breast Reconstruction and Oncoplastic Surgery Improvement Course was created by professors of the Mastology Department of Santa Casa de São Paulo and State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). The objectives of this study were to evaluate the impact of the techniques learned on patients' management by the surgeons enrolled in the Course, as well as to characterize their profile., Methods: All students enrolled in the Improvement Course between 2010 and 2018 were invited to answer an online questionnaire. Students who did not agree to answer the questionnaire or answered them incompletely were excluded., Results: Total students included: 59. The mean age: 48.9 years, male (72%) with more than 5 years of Mastology practice (82.2%), from all regions of Brazil, 1.7% from the North, 33.9% from the Northeast, 44.1% from the Southeast, and 12% from the South. Most of the students considered they had little or no knowledge of breast reconstruction (74.6%) and 91,5% did not consider they had enough aptitude to perform breast reconstructions after finishing residency. After the Course, 96.6% considered themselves apt to perform such surgeries. Over 90% of the students considered the Course had impacted their practice and changed their surgical strategy view. Before the Course, 84.8% of the students stated that less than half of their patients who were operated on for breast cancer had breast reconstruction, compared to 30.5% after the Course., Conclusion: The Breast Reconstruction and Oncoplastic Surgery Improvement Course studied here positively impacted the mastologists' management of patients. Objective: to describe and evaluate the dermoglandular advancement-rotation flap with no contralateral surgery as a technique for the conservative treatment of breast cancer when skin or a large proportion of gland requires resection., Patients/methods: 14 patients with breast tumors with a mean size of 4.2 cm and need for skin resection. The resection area is included within an isosceles triangle, with its apex located on the areola, which is the pivot for rotation of a dermoglandular flap released through a lateral extension along that triangle base. Symmetry before and after radiotherapy was objectively assessed by authors using the BCCT.core software, as well as subjectively by three experts and patients themselves using the Harvard scale., Results: Experts considered the breast symmetry results to be excellent/good for 85.7% of patients in the early post-operative period and 78.6% in the late post-operative period. Excellent/good ratings provided by BCCT.core software amounted to 78.6% of cases in the early post-operative period and 92.9% in the late post-operative period. Approximately 400 billion PET bottles are produced annually in the world, of which from 8 to 9 million tons are discarded in oceans. This requires developing strategies to urgently recycle them. PET recycling can be carried out using the microbial hydrolysis of polymers when monomers and oligomers are released. Exploring the metabolic activity of fungi is an environmentally friendly way to treat harmful polymeric waste and obtain the production of monomers. The present study addressed: (i) the investigation of potential of strains with the potential for the depolymerization of PET bottles from different manufacturers (crystallinity of 35.5 and 10.4%); (ii) the search for a culture medium that favors the depolymerization process; and (iii) gaining more knowledge on fungal enzymes that can be applied to PET recycling. Four strains (from 100 fungal strains) were found as promising for conversion into terephthalic acid from PET nanoparticles (npPET): Curvularia trifolii CBMAI 2111, Trichoderma sp. CBMAI 2071, Trichoderma atroviride CBMAI 2073, and Cladosporium cladosporioides CBMAI 2075. The fermentation assays in the presence of PET led to the release of terephthalic acid in concentrations above 12 ppm. Biodegradation was also confirmed using mass variation analyses (reducing mass), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that showed evidence of material roughness, FTIR analysis that showed band modification, enzymatic activities detected for lipase, and esterase and cutinase, confirmed by monomers/oligomers quantification using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-UV). Based on the microbial strains PET depolymerization, the results are promising for the exploration of the selected microbial strain.

Anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of sugarcane vinasse and glycerol can be profitable because of the destination of two biofuel wastes produced in large quantities in Brazil (ethanol and biodiesel, respectively) and the complementary properties of these substrates. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the effect of increasing the organic loading rate (OLR) from 2 to 20 kg COD m -3 d -1 on the AcoD of vinasse and glycerol (50 %:50 % on a COD basis) in a thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR). The highest methane production rate was observed at 20 kg COD m -3 d -1 (8.83 L CH 4 d -1 L -1 ), while the methane yield remained stable at around 265 NmL CH 4 g -1 COD rem in all conditions, even when influent vinasse reached 1811 mg SO 4 2- L -1 (10 kg COD m -3 d -1 ). Sulfate was not detected in the effluent. Bacterial genera related to sulfate removal, such as Desulfovibrio and Desulfomicrobium, were observed by means of shotgun metagenomic sequencing at 10 kg COD m -3 d -1 , as well as the acetoclastic archaea Methanosaeta and prevalence of genes encoding enzymes related to acetoclastic methanogenesis. Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a heterogenous subtype involving different patterns of behavior and clinical course, demanding a complex, individualized sequence of treatment. The knowledge and attitudes of the affiliated members of the Brazilian Society of Mastology regarding TNBC were evaluated and a consensus regarding management and treatment was reached., Methods: Affiliates completed a survey involving 44 objective questions. In addition, a specialist meeting was held with 27 experts and 3 ad hoc consultants. The panelists completed the survey before and after brainstorming. Answers achieving 70% of agreement were considered consensual. The chi-square test was used to compare answers between panelists and affiliates and the Kappa coefficient to calculate agreement., Results: Consensus among the panelists increased from 26 (59.1%) to 32 questions (72.7%) following brainstorming (p = 0.17), including 7/10 questions on systemic treatment. Among the affiliates, consensus was achieved for 24 questions (54.5%), resulting in moderate agreement (κ = 0.445). Neoadjuvant chemotherapy should be indicated for almost all cases (except cT1a-b N0) and should include platinum agents. When indicated, immunotherapy is part of the standard of care. The panel reaffirmed the concept of no ink on tumor as indicative of adequate margins and the possibility of sentinel lymph node biopsy for cN1 patients who become cN0 following neoadjuvant therapy. Antarctica has a great diversity of microorganisms with biotechnological potential but is not very well Known about yeasts with phosphate solubilization activity. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of yeasts from Antarctica lichens to solubilize phosphate in vitro. In the screening, 147 yeasts were tested and 43 (29%) showed P solubilization in solid NBRIP medium at 15.0 °C, with a higher prevalence of positive genera Vishniacozyma, followed by Cystobasidium. Most of the positive yeasts were isolated from Usnea auratiacoatra, followed by Polycauliona regalis and Lecania brialmontii. Two strains with better activity after screening were selected for the solubilization in the liquid medium, Vishniacozyma victoriae 2.L15 and A.L6 (unidentified). Vishniacozyma victoriae 2.L15 exhibiting activities at 25.0 °C (29.91 mg/L of phosphate and pH 6.85) and at 30.0 °C (619.04 mg/L of phosphate and pH 3.73) and A.L6 strain at 25.0 °C (25.05 mg/L of phosphate and pH 6.69) and at 30.0 °C (31.25 mg/L of phosphate and pH 6.47). Of eight organic acids tested by HPLC, tartaric and acetic acids were detected during phosphate solubilization, with greater release in the period of 144 (2.13 mg/L) and 72 (13.72 mg/L) hours, respectively. Future studies to elucidate the presence of functional genes for P metabolism in lichens, as well as studies in the field of proteomics for the discovery of yeast proteins related to P solubilization are needed. Background: Syphilis has recently resurfaced as a significant public health problem. Since the 2000s, isolated syphilis outbreaks have increasingly occurred in North America, Europe, and Australia; in Brazil, there have been progressive increases in both congenital and acquired syphilis. There are several possible explanations, such as misdiagnosis of acquired syphilis, which could increase the number of untreated transmitters in the population; failure to initiate or complete treatment; and nontreatment of sexual partners (leading to reinfection). Mobile technologies have been successfully used to promote behavior changes and can positively impact treatment and follow-up adherence in patients with infectious diseases. The purpose of this clinical trial is to evaluate treatment and monitoring methods in patients with syphilis, including follow-up by telephone, via a game in a smartphone app, and at public health centers., Methods: The SIM study is a single-center, randomized controlled trial with a 12-month follow-up period. The aim is to identify the most effective method of follow-up regarding patient compliance with treatment. The tests will be performed in a mobile unit in easily accessible locations. The search for sustainable development has increased interest in the improvement of technologies that use renewable energy sources. One of the alternatives in the production of renewable energy comes from the use of waste including urban solids, animal excrement from livestock, and biomass residues from agro-industrial plants. These materials may be used in the production of biogas, making its production highly sustainable and environmentally friendly. The present study aimed to evaluate the cultivated and uncultivated microbial community from a substrate (starter) used as an adapter for biogas production in anaerobic digestion processes. 16S rDNA metabarcoding revealed the domain of bacteria belonging to the phyla Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, Chloroflexi and Synergistota. The methanogenic group was represented by the phyla Halobacterota and Euryarchaeota. Through 16S rRNA sequencing of isolates recovered from the starter culture, the genera Rhodococcus (Actinobacteria phylum), Vagococcus, Lysinibacillus, Niallia, Priestia, Robertmurraya, Proteiniclasticum (Firmicutes phylum), and Luteimonas (Proteobacteria phylum) were identified, genera that were not observed in the metabarcoding data. The volatile solids, volatile organic acids, and total inorganic carbon reached 659.10 g kg -1 , 717.70 g kg -1 , 70,005.0 g kg -1 , respectively. The cultured groups are involved in the metabolism of sugars and other compounds derived from lignocellulosic material, as well as in anaerobic methane production processes. The relationship between food and human health drives the search for knowledge of food components that are related to these benefits. The scientific community shows a growing interest in the knowledge of the interactions between components of citrus fruits and probiotics to develop ways to improve the quality of the food produced. In this bibliometric review, a study of scientific publications is carried out on the potential of probiotics in citrus fermentation, addressing the importance and future trends of plant-based products in the functional food group as an alternative to the dairy market. The review process of the articles initially took place with a bibliometric analysis and was followed by a literature review. The Scopus database was used in the search for articles, carried out in May 2021. The use of foods as carriers of probiotics is an alternative that has been growing and the surveys evaluated show the desire to diversify the probiotics available on the market. In addition, it was observed that citrus fruits have great potential for the development of functional foods due to their high acceptability and possibilities of development and application in various products.

In this research batch reactors were operated with coffee processing waste and autochthonous microbial consortium, and a taxonomic and functional analysis was performed for phase I of stabilization of maximum H 2 production and for phase II of maximum H 2 consumption. During phase I, the reactor's operating conditions were pH 4.84 to 8.18, headspace 33.18% to 66.82%, and pulp and husk from 6.95 to 17.05 g/L. These assays continued for phase II, with initial pH conditions of 5.8-8.1, headspace of 33.18-66.82%, and pulp and husk remaining from phase I. The highest homoacetogenesis was observed in assay 5 with pH 7.7, 40% headspace, and 15 g/L of pulp and husk (initial concentrations of phase I). A relative abundance of Clostridium 41%, Lactobacillus 20% and Acetobacter 14% was observed in phase I. In phase II, there was a change in relative abundance of 21%, 63%, and 1%, respectively, and functional genes involved with autotrophic (formyltetrahydrofolate synthase) and heterotrophic (enolase) homoacetogenesis, butanol (3-hydroxybutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase), and propionic acid (propionate CoA-transferase) were identified. Background: The origin of persistent pain and joint limitation after knee arthroplasty are controversial and difficult to diagnose. Knee arthroscopy is indicated when the results of routine evaluation tests are not clear. The purpose of this study was to determine through arthroscopy the cause of post-knee-arthroplasty pain symptoms in patients without a prior diagnosis of cause of pain., Methods: This prospective case series study described the outcomes of 34 patients (35 knees) with pain and limited function in the arthroplastic joint, who underwent diagnostic and therapeutic arthroscopy. Patients were clinically evaluated using range-of-motion tests and the Lysholm, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and Knee Society Score (KSS) scales., Results: The procedure found cyclops in 17 knees, synovitis in 9 knees, arthrofibrosis in 6 knees, polyethylene wear with debris in two knees, and polyethylene bouncing in one knee with unicompartmental arthroplasty with a mobile polyethylene platform. It was effective for the relief of pain symptoms, with excellent or good outcomes in 80% of cases; there was a poor outcome in 11.43%, which maintained the presentation of pain and underwent revision arthroplasty, and, in 8.57%, did not undergo another surgery despite symptom persistence., Conclusions: Post-arthroplasty knee arthroscopy seems beneficial in patients with pain and without a pre-established diagnosis and who had already undergone conservative treatment unsuccessfully., (© 2021. Estrogen receptor α (ERα) is a regulatory protein that can access a set of distinct structural configurations. ERα undergoes extensive remodeling as it interacts with different agonists and antagonists, as well as transcription activation and repression factors. Moreover, breast cancer tumors resistant to hormone therapy have been associated with the imbalance between the active and inactive ERα states. Cancer-activating mutations in ERα play a crucial role in this imbalance and can promote the progression of cancer. However, the rate of this progression can also be increased by dysregulated pH in the tumor microenvironment. Many molecular aspects of the process of activation of ERα that can be affected by these pH changes and mutations are still unclear. Thus, we applied computational and experimental techniques to explore the activation process dynamics of ER for environments with different pHs and in the presence of one of the most recurrent cancer-activating mutations, D538G. Our results indicated that the effect of the pH increase associated with the D538G mutation promoted a robust stabilization of the active state of ER. We were also able to determine the main protein regions that have the most potential to influence the activation process under different pH conditions, which may provide targets of future therapeutics for the treatment of hormone-resistant breast cancer tumors. Finally, the approach used here can be applied for proteins associated with the proliferation of other cancer types, which can also have their function affected by small pH changes.

Industrial sectors are searching for new compounds to improve the preservation of food and blood, human tissues, and fuels used at low temperatures. Antarctic microorganisms have mechanisms to overcome injuries caused by low temperatures, making them sources of compounds with antifreeze activity. However, it is mandatory that such compounds do not pose a risk to human health. The present study evaluated the potential of Antarctic bacteria to resist freezing, produce virulence factors, their tolerance to physiological pHs/temperature and resistance to antibiotics. Sixty-five isolates were tested for antifreeze compound production, among which, 31 grew after the test. Of these, 3 strains of Arthrobacter sp. (356, 358 and 443), one Psychromonas arctica (ESH238) and one unidentified strain (363) showed positive results for hemolytic activity. Psychrobacter sp. 456 showed proteinase activity. None of the isolates showed resistance to the antibiotics. All isolates were able to grow in one of the three pHs (4, 7 and 8) and/or temperature (36, 38 and 40 ºC). Antarctic bacterial present potential for the production of antifreeze compounds and may be considered safe in industrial processes. The characterization of the genes responsible for virulence factors should be carried out to reinforce the potential applicability of such bacteria.

In the Antarctic environment, yeasts are versatile eukaryotes that have shown wide dispersion in different substrates, producing active enzymes in extreme conditions, but their relevance in biotechnological applications is largely unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the production of extracellular hydrolases by yeasts isolated from Antarctic lichens and molecularly identify these isolates. From a total of 144 isolates on the screening, 109 (76%) produced at least one of the hydrolases tested, with most activities for proteases 59 (41%), cellulases 58 (40%), esterases 57 (39%), lipases 29 (20%), amylases 23 (16%) and pectinases 20 (14%). Among these isolates, 76 were identified, most belonged to the phylum Basidiomycota (n=73) with the dominance of Vishniacozyma victoriae (n=27), Cystobasidium alpinum (n=3), Mrakia niccombsii (n=3), Cystobasidium laryngis (n=2), Bannozyma yamatoana (n=2), Holtermanniella nyarrowii (n=2), and Glaciozyma martinii (n=2). This study is the first one reporting extracellular enzyme production by yeasts isolated from thallus of the species of Antarctic lichens Lecania brialmontii, Polycauliona candelaria, Usnea capillacea, Cladonia metacorallifera, and Polycauliona regalis. With these data, it's possible to confirm lichens as a source of hydrolase-producing yeasts, reinforcing the potential of these microorganisms in bioprospecting studies of catalytic molecules from polar regions that may be useful in promising biotechnological applications.

Introduction: Despite the lack of randomised evidence, there is a current trend towards omitting axillary surgery in cases of positive sentinel lymph node (SLN) following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). This study evaluated practice patterns of Brazilian breast surgeons when managing positive SLN following NACT., Methods: This was a nationwide electronic survey of breast surgeons affiliated with the Brazilian Society of Mastology. Management approaches for positive SLN after NACT (axillary dissection (AD), regional nodal irradiation (RNI) or no additional treatment) were evaluated as a function of residual disease volume in the SLN (macro-metastasis, micro-metastasis or isolated tumour cells (ITC))., Results: Survey response rate was 49%, with 799/1,627 questionnaires returned. Most respondents were <50 years old (61%), lived in south-eastern Brazil (50%), in a major city (67%), worked in an academic institute (80%) and were board-certified (80%). AD recommendation rate decreased according to residual nodal disease volume: 91% of respondents recommended AD for cases of macro-metastasis, 64% for micro-metastasis and 38% for ITC ( p < 0.00001). Furthermore, 35% would recommend no additional surgery for micro-metastasis, while 27% would recommend no treatment at all for ITC ( p < 0.00001). Not working in an academic institute was associated with RNI for micro-metastasis ( p = 0.02), but not for macro-metastasis or ITC. Being board-certified did not affect axillary management., Conclusion: Most respondents would recommend AD and/or RNI in residual nodal disease following NACT irrespective of disease volume. Nevertheless, a trend towards surgical de-escalation was found with low-volume disease (micro-metastasis and ITC). BioH 2 production from cheese whey (CW) was evaluated in two acidogenic reactors, UASB and structured fixed-bed (FB), without pH adjustment, under mesophilic conditions, and OLR of 25-90 g COD/L.d. Stage 1 was conducted as a control experiment using sucrose. BioH 2 production occurred under pH < 3.0 with maximum yields of 5.8 and 3.0 mol H 2 /mol sucrose consumed for UASB and FB reactors, respectively. In Stage 2, CW was the only substrate and a negligible bioH 2 production was observed. Nevertheless, a maximum lactic acid concentration of 9.6 g/L was obtained, indicating that pH adjustment can be non-essential for lactic acid production from CW. In Stage 3, a strategy to enrich hydrogenogenic biomass was conducted by initially feeding the reactors with sucrose and gradually replacing it by CW. Purpose: To evaluate the impact of the ACOSOG Z0011 trial on axillary breast cancer surgery management in Brazil following publication of that study (2010) and again in 2020., Patients and Methods: A survey of members of the Brazilian Society of Mastology., Results: Of 1627 breast surgeons, 799 (49.1%) completed and returned the questionnaire. For patients with the Z11 inclusion criteria, following detection of a positive sentinel lymph node (SLN), axillary dissection (AD) was recommended by 99.2% of respondents before publication of the study, 47.5% in 2010 and 18.5% in 2020 (p < 0.001). In breast-conserving surgery, if there were micro-metastases, 2.6% would perform AD, 30.3% axillary radiotherapy, and 67.1% no additional axillary treatment, while with macro-metastases, these proportions were 21.3%, 52.2%, and 26.5%, respectively. In cases of mastectomy and of nodal extracapsular extension, 43.4% and 36% of surgeons, respectively, recommended AD. For clinically negative axilla and suspicious findings at ultrasonography, 69% of the surgeons would apply the Z11 approach. Most applied the Z11 criteria in cases of younger patients (83.6%) and triple-negative and/or HER2 positive tumors (74%). AD was significantly more likely to be recommended by surgeons who did not work in academic institutes, who worked in locations other than capital cities, who were not board-certified, and who were ≥ 50 years old., Conclusions: This survey revealed substantial changes in axillary surgery management in cN0/pathologically positive SLN, particularly following publication of the updated Z11 results and other similar studies. Like temperature and pressure, solution pH is an important environmental variable in biomolecular simulations. Virtually all proteins depend on pH to maintain their structure and function. In conventional molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of proteins, pH is implicitly accounted for by assigning and fixing protonation states of titratable sidechains. This is a significant limitation, as the assigned protonation states may be wrong and they may change during dynamics. Introduction: Fractures of the diaphysis of the clavicle are common; however, treatment guidelines for this condition are lacking. Surgery is associated with a lower risk of non-union and better functional outcomes but a higher risk of complications. Open reduction and internal fixation with plates and screws are the most commonly performed techniques, but they are associated with paraesthesia in the areas of incisions, extensive surgical exposure and high rates of implant removal. Minimally invasive techniques for treating these fractures have a lower rate of complications. The aim of this study is to evaluate which surgical treatment option (minimally invasive osteosynthesis or open reduction and internal fixation) has better prognosis in terms of complications and reoperations., Methods and Analysis: The study proposed is a multicentric, pragmatic, randomised, open-label, superiority clinical trial between minimally invasive osteosynthesis and open reduction and internal fixation for surgical treatment of patients with displaced fractures of the clavicle shaft. In the proposed study, 190 individuals with displaced midshaft clavicle fractures, who require surgery as treatment, will be randomised. The assessment will occur at 2, 6, 12, 24 and 48 weeks, respectively. The primary outcome of the study will be the number of complications and reoperations. For sample size calculation, a moderate effective size between the techniques was considered in a two-tailed test, with 95% confidence and 90% power. Complications include cases of infection, hypertrophic scarring, non-union, refracture, implant failure, hypoesthesia, skin irritation and shoulder pain. Cyanobacteria massive proliferations are common in freshwater bodies worldwide, causing adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and public health. Numerous species develop blooms. Most of them correspond to the toxic microcystin-producing cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. Microorganisms recovered from Antarctic environment can be considered an unexploited source of antimicrobial compounds. Data about their activity against cyanobacteria are scant or inexistent. This study aimed to evaluate the capacity of Antarctic bacteria to inhibit the proliferation of M. aeruginosa BCPUSP232 and to degrade microcystin-LR (MC-LR). Cell-free extracts of seventy-six bacterial strains were initially tested for antimicrobial activity. Unidentified (UN) strains 62 and ES7 and Psychromonas arctica were able to effectively lyse M. aeruginosa. Eight strains showed MIC ranging from 0.55 to 3.00 mg mL -1 , with ES7 showing the best antimicrobial activity. Arthrobacter sp. 443 and UN 383 were the most efficient in degrading MC-LR, with 24.87 and 23.85% degradation, respectively. Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is usually performed with autologous bone-patellar tendon-bone (PT) or hamstring tendon (HT) graft. There has been only 1 randomized clinical trial examining ACL reconstruction with these grafts specifically in soccer players, and more studies comparing these graft types within a homogenous cohort such as soccer athletes may better highlight differences in outcomes., Purpose: To compare the results of ACL reconstruction with PT versus HT autograft in soccer players and to evaluate objective and subjective outcomes., Study Design: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1., Methods: A total of 62 professional or semiprofessional soccer players (mean age, 25.1 years) with ACL injury were randomized to undergo reconstruction with PT or HT autograft by a single orthopaedic surgeon (n = 31 in each group). Outcome measures were recorded preoperatively and at 2 years postoperatively. The primary outcome was the modified Cincinnati Knee Rating System, and secondary outcomes were the objective and subjective International Knee Documentation Committee scores, Lachman test, pivot-shift test, anterior drawer test, and Lysholm score. The following variables were also evaluated postoperatively: return to soccer, level at return, graft rerupture, postoperative complications, anterior knee pain, patellar tendinitis, difficulty sprinting, and loss of kicking power., Results: The PT and HT groups were homogenous in terms of age, sex distribution, injured side, and time from injury to surgery, and there was no difference between them on any preoperative outcome score. At 2 years postoperatively, there were no differences between the groups on any outcome score; however, there were significantly fewer patients with anterior knee pain in the HT group compared with the PT group (7 [22.6%] vs 15 [48.4%], respectively; P = .03). Pigments from microorganisms have triggered great interest in the market, mostly by their "natural" appeal, their favorable production conditions, in addition to the potential new chemical structures or naturally overproducing strains. They have been used in: food, feed, dairy, textile, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. The high rate of pigment production in microorganisms recovered from Antarctica in response to selective pressures such as: high UV radiation, low temperatures, and freezing and thawing cycles makes this a unique biome which means that much of its biological heritage cannot be found elsewhere on the planet. This vast arsenal of pigmented molecules has different functions in bacteria and may exhibit different biotechnological activities, such as: extracellular sunscreens, photoprotective function, antimicrobial activity, biodegradability, etc. However, many challenges for the commercial use of these compounds have yet to be overcome, such as: the low stability of natural pigments in cosmetic formulations, the change in color when subjected to pH variations, the low yield and the high costs in their production. This review surveys the different types of natural pigments found in Antarctic bacteria, classifying them according to their chemical structure. Finally, we give an overview of the main pigments that are used commercially today.

The need for more effective drugs for the treatment of infectious diseases as well as for general applications including wound healing and burn surgery, has guided efforts for the discovery of new compounds of medical interest. Microorganisms found in textile industrial waste have the ability to produce a variety of enzymes and/or secondary metabolites including molecules of pharmaceutical interest. The present work investigated the biotechnological potential of filamentous fungi isolated from textile industry wastewater for the production of collagenase and antimicrobial metabolites. From 28 isolates assayed, Sarocladium sp. ITF33 showed specific collagenolytic activity with values of 7.62 and 9.04 U mg -1 for the intracellular and extracellular fractions, respectively. The isolate Penicillium sp. ITF28 showed the best antimicrobial activity, reaching MIC ranging from 1.0 to 0.0625 mg mL -1 against five pathogenic bacteria. Molecular analyzes suggest that the isolate Sarocladium sp. ITF 33 can be considered a species not yet described. The results of the present work encourage studies of characterization and purification of the enzymes and secondary metabolites produced by the isolates found aiming future applications in the medical and pharmaceutical fields., (© 2021. Microorganisms inhabiting subsurface petroleum reservoirs are key players in biochemical transformations. The interactions of microbial communities in these environments are highly complex and still poorly understood. This work aimed to assess publicly available metagenomes from oil reservoirs and implement a robust pipeline of genome-resolved metagenomics to decipher metabolic and taxonomic profiles of petroleum reservoirs worldwide. Analysis of 301.2 Gb of metagenomic information derived from heavily flooded petroleum reservoirs in China and Alaska to non-flooded petroleum reservoirs in Brazil enabled us to reconstruct 148 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) of high and medium quality. At the phylum level, 74% of MAGs belonged to bacteria and 26% to archaea. The profiles of these MAGs were related to the physicochemical parameters and recovery management applied. The analysis of the potential functional core in the reservoirs showed that the microbiota was specialized for each site, with 31.7% of the total KEGG orthologies annotated as functions (1690 genes) common to all oil fields, while 18% of the functions were site-specific, i.e., present only in one of the oil fields. The oil reservoirs with a lower level of intervention were the most similar to the potential functional core, while the oil fields with a long history of water injection had greater variation in functional profile. These results show how key microorganisms and their functions respond to the distinct physicochemical parameters and interventions of the oil field operations such as water injection and expand the knowledge of biogeochemical transformations in these ecosystems.

Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection may cause serious disease, while pathogenicity of HTLV-2 is less certain. There are no screening or surveillance programs for HTLV-1/-2 infection in Brazil. By performing this systematic review, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of HTLV-1/-2 infections in pregnant women in Brazil. This review included cohort and cross-sectional studies that assessed the presence of either HTLV-1/-2 infection in pregnant women in Brazil. We searched BVS/LILACS, Cochrane Library/CENTRAL, EMBASE, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science and gray literature from inception to August 2020. We identified 246 records in total. Twenty-six of those were included in the qualitative synthesis, while 17 of them were included in the meta-analysis. The prevalence of HTLV-1 in Brazilian pregnant women, as diagnosed by a positive screening test and a subsequent positive confirmatory test, was 0.32% (95% CI 0.19-1.54), while of HTLV-2 was 0.04% (95% CI 0.02-0.08). Subgroup analysis by region showed the highest prevalence in the Northeast region (0.60%; 95% CI 0.37-0.97) for HTLV-1 and in the South region (0.16%; 95% CI 0.02-1.10) for HTLV-2. The prevalence of HTLV-1 is much higher than HTLV-2 infection in pregnant Brazilian women with important differences between regions. Soil contamination with diesel oil is quite common during processes of transport and storage. Bioremediation is considered a safe, economical, and environmentally friendly approach for contaminated soil treatment. In this context, studies using hydrocarbon bioremediation have focused on total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) analysis to assess process effectiveness, while ecotoxicity has been neglected. Thus, this study aimed to select a microbial consortium capable of detoxifying diesel oil and apply this consortium to the bioremediation of soil contaminated with this environmental pollutant through different bioremediation approaches. Gas chromatography (GC-FID) was used to analyze diesel oil degradation, while ecotoxicological bioassays with the bioindicators Artemia sp., Aliivibrio fischeri (Microtox), and Cucumis sativus were used to assess detoxification. After 90 days of bioremediation, we found that the biostimulation and biostimulation/bioaugmentation approaches showed higher rates of diesel oil degradation in relation to natural attenuation (41.9 and 26.7%, respectively). Phytotoxicity increased in the biostimulation and biostimulation/bioaugmentation treatments during the degradation process, whereas in the Microtox test, the toxicity was the same in these treatments as that in the natural attenuation treatment. In both the phytotoxicity and Microtox tests, bioaugmentation treatment showed lower toxicity. However, compared with natural attenuation, this approach did not show satisfactory hydrocarbon degradation. Based on the microcosm experiments results, we conclude that a broader analysis of the success of bioremediation requires the performance of toxicity bioassays.

Purpose: We evaluated the impact of 21-gene test results on treatment decisions for patients with early-stage breast cancer treated under the public health care system in Brazil, Sistema Único de Saúde., Methods: Eligible patients treated at Hospital Pérola Byington and Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo in Brazil were required to have the following characteristics: postsurgery with hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor 2-negative, node-negative and node-positive, and T1/T2 breast cancer and patients with these characteristics were candidates for adjuvant systemic therapy. Treatment recommendations, chemotherapy plus hormonal therapy (CT + HT) or HT alone, were captured before and after 21-gene test results., Results: From August 2018 to April 2019, 179 women were enrolled. The mean age was 58 years (29-86 years), 135 (76%) were postmenopausal, and 58 (32%) had node-positive breast cancer. Most patients (61%) had a tumor > 2 cm, including 7% with tumors > 4 cm. Using Recurrence Score (RS) result cut points on the basis of the TAILORx trial, 40 (22%) had RS 0-10, 91 (51%) had RS 11-25, and 48 (27%) had RS 26-100. Before 21-gene testing, 162 of 179 (91%) patients were recommended for CT. After testing, 117 of 179 patients (65%) had changes in CT recommendation: 112 (63%) who were initially recommended CT received HT alone and five (3%) who were initially recommended HT alone received CT + HT. After 21-gene testing, 99% of physicians reported strong confidence in their treatment recommendations., Conclusion: The change in clinical practice at these public hospitals was greater than expected: 66% of initial treatment recommendations were changed to omit CT with 21-gene test results. Understanding the aspects that contribute to improving proteins' biochemical properties is of high relevance for protein engineering. Properties such as the catalytic rate, thermal stability, and thermal resistance are crucial for applying enzymes in the industry. Different interactions can influence those biochemical properties of an enzyme. Among them, the surface charge-charge interactions have been a target of particular attention. In this study, we employ the Tanford-Kirkwood solvent accessibility model using the Monte Carlo algorithm (TKSA-MC) to predict possible interactions that could improve stability and catalytic rate of a WT xylanase (XynA WT ) and its M6 xylanase (XynA M6 ) mutant. The modeling prediction indicates that mutating from a lysine in position 99 to a glutamic acid (K99E) favors the native state stabilization in both xylanases. Our lab results showed that mutated xylanases had their thermotolerance and catalytic rate increased, which conferred higher processivity of delignified sugarcane bagasse. The TKSA-MC approach employed here is presented as an efficient computational-based design strategy that can be applied to improve the thermal resistance of enzymes with industrial and biotechnological applications., (Copyright © 2021 Biophysical Society. Background: The use of unstable surfaces has been proposed to increase the neuromuscular demand. This strategy has been adopted to generate an increase in the activity of periscapular muscles due to its role in the stabilization of the scapula. However, the influence of this instability on the EMG activity remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of using unstable surfaces on the EMG activity of the periscapular muscles., Methods: A comprehensive search in the PubMed, EMBASE, SCIELO, Web of Science, SCOPUS, Cochrane and LILACS databases was undertaken from their year of inception up to December 2019. Studies which directly investigated the EMG activity of periscapular muscles in healthy individuals while performing exercises for the upper limbs in stable and unstable conditions., Results: A total of 33 studies which evaluated a total of 678 healthy individuals were found according to the eligibility criteria. A meta-analysis identified that the EMG activity of the upper trapezius showed a trivial increase with the insertion of the unstable surface (P = 0.04; SMD = 0.14 [95%CI 0.00, 0.27]). No significant effects were observed on the middle trapezius (P = 0.10) and lower trapezius (P = 0.25). A decrease of the anterior serratus EMG activity with a small effect size was observed by implementing an unstable surface (P = 0.01; SMD = -0.21 [95%CI -0.36, -0.05])., Conclusion: The use of unstable surfaces generated a trivial increase in the upper trapezius activity, and a slight decrease in the anterior serratus activity. Patellar instability is a multifactorial clinical condition that affects a significant number of patients and occurs due to morphological variations of the joint and patellofemoral alignment. The present literature review study aimed to identify and summarize current concepts on patellar instability, in relation to associated risk factors, diagnostic criteria, and the benefits and risks of conservative and surgical treatments. For this purpose, a search was conducted in the following electronic databases: MEDLINE (via Pubmed), LILACS and Cochrane Library. It is concluded that the accurate diagnosis depends on the detailed clinical evaluation, including the history and possible individual risk factors, as well as imaging exams. The increased incidence of thyroid diseases raises a series of questions about what the main predisposing factors are nowadays. If dietary restriction of iodine was once a major global health concern, today, the processes of industrialization of food and high exposure to a wide variety of environmental chemicals may be affecting, directly or indirectly, thyroid function. The homeostasis of hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis is finely regulated through the negative feedback mechanism exerted by thyroid hormones. Allostatic mechanisms are triggered to adjust the physiology of HPT axis in chronic conditions. Glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides are pesticides with controversial endocrine disrupting activities and only few studies have approached their effects on HPT axis and thyroid function. However, glyphosate has an electrophilic and nucleophilic zwitterion chemical structure that may affect the mechanisms involved in iodide oxidation and organification, as well as the oxidative phosphorylation in the ATP synthesis. In association with lichens, bacteria can play key roles in solubilizing sources of inorganic phosphates that are available in the environment. In this study, the potential of bacteria isolated from 15 Antarctic lichen samples for phosphate solubilization was investigated. From 124 bacteria tested, 66 (53%) were positive for phosphate solubilization in solid NBRIP medium, with a higher prevalence of Pseudomonas, followed by Caballeronia and Chryseobacterium. Most of the phosphate-solubilizing bacteria were isolated from Usnea auratiacoatra, followed by Caloplaca regalis and Xanthoria candelaria. Two isolates showed outstanding performance, Pseudomonas sp. 11.LB15 and Pseudomonas sp. 1.LB34, since they presented solubilization in the temperature range from 15.0 to 30.0 °C, and maximum quantification of soluble phosphate at 25.0 °C was 511.21 and 532.07 mg/L for Pseudomonas sp. 11.LB15 and Pseudomonas sp. 1.LB34, respectively. At 30.0 °C soluble phosphate yield was 639.43 and 518.95 mg/L with pH of 3.74 and 3.87 for Pseudomonas sp. 11.LB15 and Pseudomonas sp. 1.LB34, respectively. Fumaric and tartaric acids were released during the solubilization process. Finally, bacteria isolated from Antarctic lichens were shown to have the potential for phosphate solubilization, opening perspectives for future application in the agricultural sector and contributing to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers.
