1. Understanding the cosmic abundance of 22Na: Lifetime measurements in 23Mg

Abstract

Simulations of explosive nucleosynthesis in novae predict the production of 22Na, a key astronomical observable to constrain nova models. Its gamma-ray line at 1.275 MeV has not yet been observed by the gamma-ray space telescopes. The 20Ne/22Ne ratio in presolar grains, a possible tool to identify nova grains, also depends on 22Na produced. Uncertainties on its yield in classical novae currently originate from the rate of the 22Na(p, γ)23Mg reaction. At peak novae temperatures, this reaction is dominated by a resonance at ER=0.204 MeV, corresponding to the Ex=7.785 MeV excited state in 23Mg. The resonance strengths measured so far disagree by one order of magnitude. An experiment has been performed at GANIL to measure the lifetime and the proton branching ratio of this key state, with a femtosecond resolution for the former. The reactions populating states in 23Mg have been studied with a high resolution detection set-up, i.e. the particle VAMOS, SPIDER and gamma tracking AGATA spectrometers, allowing the measurements of lifetimes and proton branchings. We present here a comparison between experimental results and shell-model calculations, that allowed us to assign the spin and parity of the key state. Abstract

The nucleus Ne29 is situated at the border of the island of inversion. Despite significant efforts, no bound low-lying intruder f7/2 state, which would place Ne29 firmly inside the island of inversion, has yet been observed. Here, the first investigation of unbound states of Ne29 is reported. The states were populated in Ne30(p,pn) and Na30(p,2p) reactions at a beam energy of around 230 MeV/nucleon, and analyzed in terms of their resonance properties, partial cross sections, and momentum distributions. The momentum distributions are compared to calculations using the eikonal, direct reaction model, allowing ℓ assignments for the observed states. The lowest-lying resonance at an excitation energy of 1.48(4) MeV shows clear signs of a significant ℓ=3 component, giving first evidence for f7/2 single particle strength in Ne29. The excitation energies and strengths of the observed states are compared to shell-model calculations using the sdpf-u-mix interaction.

Abstract

The Resonant Elastic Scattering (RES) method has been used at GANIL with Radioactive Ions Beams (RIB) in order to study important unbound states. Three examples of studies are given: the first one is related to the important astrophysical reaction 18F(p,α)15O, the second one to the two-proton radioactivity of 19Mg, and the third one to the prediction of the existence of a narrow state in the unbound nucleus 15F. The three experiments have benefited from high quality radioactive beams produced by the Spiral Facility.

Abstract

Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-unbound nucleus ^{28}F has been performed for the first time following proton/neutron removal from ^{29}Ne/^{29}F beams at energies around 230  MeV/nucleon. The invariant-mass spectra were reconstructed for both the ^{27}F^{(*)}+n and ^{26}F^{(*)}+2n coincidences and revealed a series of well-defined resonances. A near-threshold state was observed in both reactions and is identified as the ^{28}F ground state, with S_{n}(^{28}F)=-199(6)  keV, while analysis of the 2n decay channel allowed a considerably improved S_{n}(^{27}F)=1620(60)  keV to be deduced. Comparison with shell-model predictions and eikonal-model reaction calculations have allowed spin-parity assignments to be proposed for some of the lower-lying levels of ^{28}F. Importantly, in the case of the ground state, the reconstructed ^{27}F+n momentum distribution following neutron removal from ^{29}F indicates that it arises mainly from the 1p_{3/2} neutron intruder configuration. This demonstrates that the island of inversion around N=20 includes ^{28}F, and most probably ^{29}F, and suggests that ^{28}O is not doubly magic.

Abstract

International audience; The last proton bound calcium isotope $^{35}$Ca has been studied for the first time, using the $^{37}$Ca($p, t$)$^{35}$Ca two neutron transfer reaction. The radioactive $^{37}$Ca nuclei, produced by the LISE spectrometer at GANIL, interacted with the protons of the liquid hydrogen target CRYPTA, to produce tritons $t$ that were detected in the MUST2 detector array, in coincidence with the heavy residues Ca or Ar. The atomic mass of $^{35}$Ca and the energy of its first 3/2$^+$ state are reported. A large $N=16$ gap of 4.61(11) MeV is deduced from the mass measurement, which together with other measured properties, makes $^{36}$Ca a doubly-magic nucleus. The $N = 16$ shell gaps in $^{36}$Ca and $^{24}$O are of similar amplitude, at both edges of the valley of stability. This feature is discussed in terms of nuclear forces involved, within state-of-the-art shell model calculations. Even though the global agreement with data is quite convincing, the calculations underestimate the size of the $N = 16$ gap in 36Ca by 840(110) keV.

At peak novae temperatures, this reaction is dominated by a resonance at ER=0.204 MeV, corresponding to the Ex=7.785 MeV excited state in 23Mg. The resonance strengths measured so far disagree by one order of magnitude. An experiment has been performed at GANIL to measure the lifetime and the proton branching ratio of this key state, with a femtosecond resolution for the former. The reactions populating states in 23Mg have been studied with a high resolution detection set-up, i.e. the particle VAMOS, SPIDER and gamma tracking AGATA spectrometers, allowing the measurements of lifetimes and proton branchings. We present here a comparison between experimental results and shell-model calculations, that allowed us to assign the spin and parity of the key state. Rather small values obtained for reduced M1 matrix elements, M(M1) ≲ 0.5 µN, and proton spectroscopic factors, C2Sp<10−2, seem to be beyond the accuracy of the shell model. With the reevaluated 22Na(p, γ)23Mg rate, the 22Na detectability limit and its observation frequency from novae are found promising for the future space telescopes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report the first high-precision mass measurements of the neutron-rich nuclei $^{74,75}$Ni and the clearly identified ground state of $^{76}$Cu, along with a more precise mass-excess value of $^{78}$Cu, performed with the double Penning trap JYFLTRAP at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility. These new results lead to a quantitative estimation of the quenching for the N=50 neutron shell gap. The impact of this shell quenching on core-collapse supernova dynamics is specifically tested using a dedicated statistical equilibrium approach that allows a variation of the mass model independent of the other microphysical inputs. We conclude that the impact of nuclear masses is strong when implemented using a fixed trajectory as in the previous studies, but the effect is substantially reduced when implemented self-consistently in the simulation.

Abstract

The structure of the unbound 15F nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive 14O beam impinging on a CH2 target. The analysis of 1H(14O,p)14O and 1H(14O,2p)13N reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow 1/2− resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2− and 3/2− resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of 14O, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state of 13N via the 1− resonance of 14O. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2− and 3/2− resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p-decay channels. The observed excitation function 1H(14O,p)14O and resonance spectrum in 15F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

Abstract

The nucleus Ne29 is situated at the border of the island of inversion. Despite significant efforts, no bound low-lying intruder f7/2 state, which would place Ne29 firmly inside the island of inversion, has yet been observed. Here, the first investigation of unbound states of Ne29 is reported. The states were populated in Ne30(p,pn) and Na30(p,2p) reactions at a beam energy of around 230 MeV/nucleon, and analyzed in terms of their resonance properties, partial cross sections, and momentum distributions. The momentum distributions are compared to calculations using the eikonal, direct reaction model, allowing ℓ assignments for the observed states. The lowest-lying resonance at an excitation energy of 1.48(4) MeV shows clear signs of a significant ℓ=3 component, giving first evidence for f7/2 single particle strength in Ne29. The excitation energies and strengths of the observed states are compared to shell-model calculations using the sdpf-u-mix interaction.

Abstract

International audience; Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-deficient nucleus Ca36 was obtained up to 9 MeV using the Ca37(p,d)Ca36 and the Ca38(p,t)Ca36 transfer reactions. The radioactive nuclei, produced by the LISE spectrometer at GANIL, interacted with the protons of the liquid hydrogen target CRYPTA, to produce light ejectiles (the deuteron d or triton t) that were detected in the MUST2 detector array, in coincidence with the heavy residues identified by a zero-degree detection system. Our main findings are (i) a similar shift in energy for the 11+ and 21+ states by about -250 keV, as compared with the mirror nucleus S36; (ii) the discovery of an intruder 02+ state at 2.83(13) MeV, which appears below the first 2+ state, in contradiction with the situation in S36; and (iii) a tentative 03+ state at 4.83(17) MeV, proposed to exhibit a bubble structure with two neutron vacancies in the 2s1/2 orbit. The inversion between the 02+ and 21+ states is due to the large mirror energy difference (MED) of -516(130) keV for the former. This feature is reproduced by shell model calculations, using the sd-pf valence space, predicting an almost pure intruder nature for the 02+ state, with two protons (neutrons) being excited across the Z=20 magic closure in Ca36 (S36). This mirror system has the largest MEDs ever observed, if one excludes the few cases induced by the effect of the continuum.

Abstract

International audience; The structure of the unbound F15 nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive O14 beam impinging on a CH2 target. The analysis of H1(O14,p)O14 and H1(O14,2p)N13 reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow 1/2− resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2− and 3/2− resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of O14, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state of N13 via the 1− resonance of O14. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2− and 3/2− resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p-decay channels. The observed excitation function H1(O14,p)O14 and resonance spectrum in F15 are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

Abstract

The unbound proton-rich nuclei 16F and 15F are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Several experiments using the resonant elastic scattering method were performed at GANIL with radioactive beams to determine the properties of the low lying states of these nuclei. Strong asymmetry between 16F–16N and 15F–15C mirror nuclei is observed. The strength of the nucleon- nucleon effective interaction involving the loosely bound proton in the s1 / 2 orbit is significantly modified with respect to their mirror nuclei 16N and 15C. The reduction of the effective interaction is estimated by calculating the interaction energies with a schematic zero-range force. It is found that, after correcting for the effects due to changes in the radial distribution of the single-particle wave functions, the mirror symmetry of the n- p interaction is preserved between 16F and 16N, while a difference of 63% is measured between the p- p versus n- n interactions in the second excited state of 15F and 15C nuclei. Abstract

International audience; Background: A recent sensitivity study has shown that the K35(p,γ)Ca36 reaction is one of the ten (p,γ) reaction rates that could significantly impact the shape of the calculated x-ray burst light curve. Its reaction rate used up to now in type I x-ray burst calculations was estimated using an old measurement for the mass of Ca36 and theoretical predictions for the partial decay widths of the first 2+ resonance with arbitrary uncertainties. Purpose: In this work, we propose to reinvestigate the K35(p,γ)Ca36 reaction rate, as well as related uncertainties, by determining the energies and decay branching ratios of Ca36 levels, within the Gamow window of x-ray bursts, in the 0.5 to 2 GK temperature range. Method: These properties were studied by means of the one-neutron pickup transfer reaction Ca37(p,d)Ca36 in inverse kinematics using a radioactive beam of Ca37 at 48 MeV nucleon−1. The experiment was performed at the GANIL facility using the liquid hydrogen target CRYPTA, the MUST2 charged particle detector array for the detection of the light charged particles, and a zero degree detection system for the outgoing heavy recoil nuclei. Results: The atomic mass of Ca36 is confirmed and new resonances have been proposed together with their proton decay branching ratios. This spectroscopic information, used in combination with very recent theoretical predictions for the γ-decay width, were used to calculate the K35(p,γ)Ca36 reaction rate. The recommended rate of the present work was obtained within a uncertainty factor of 2 at 1σ. This is consistent with the previous estimate in the x-ray burst temperature range. A large increase of the reaction rate was found at higher temperatures due to two newly discovered resonances. Conclusions: The K35(p,γ)Ca36 thermonuclear reaction rate is now well constrained by the present work in a broad range of temperatures covering those relevant to type I x-ray bursts. Our results show that the K35(p,γ)Ca36 reaction does not affect the shape of the x-ray burst light curve, and that it can be removed from the list of the few influential proton radiative captures reactions having a strong impact on the light curve.
