Olive leaves are consumed as an extract or as a whole herbal powder with several potential therapeutic benefits attributed to polyphenols, tocopherol's isomers, and flavonoids, among others. This study assessed the potential variance in the functional features presented by olive leaves from three different Portuguese cultivars-Cobrançosa, Madural, and Verdeal-randomly mix-cultivated in the geographical area of Vale de Salgueiros. Inorganic analysis determined their mineral profiles while an organic analysis measured their total phenolic and flavonoid content, and scanned their phenolic and tocopherol and fatty acid composition. The extracts' biological activity was tested by determining their antimicrobial and antioxidant power as well as their ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, MAO-A/B, and angiotensin-I-converting enzyme. The inorganic profiles showed them to be an inexpensive source able to address different mineral deficiencies. All cultivars appear to have potential for use as possible antioxidants and future alternative antibiotics against some multidrug-resistant microorganisms, with caution regarding the arsenic content in the Verdeal cultivar. Madural's extract displayed properties to be considered a natural multitarget treatment for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, depression, and cardiometabolic and dual activity for blood pressure modulation. This work indicates that randomly cultivating different cultivars significantly modifies the leaves' composition while keeping their multifaceted therapeutic value.

Objectives: Human Polycystic Ovary/Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a frequent endocrine pathophysiology among women of fertile age, is associated with woman's lifespan endocrine, metabolic and psychological implications. Long-term usage side effects of allopathic strategies and their low efficacy made complementary medicine treatments a relevant subject for these patients. The main aim of this work is to review the efficiency of the acupuncture treatment reported in the latest studies on literature regarding PCOS patients., Methods: A comprehensive literature search, in English language, about the use of acupuncture on the management of PCOS, was conducted in October 2020 using EBSCO, Cochrane, PubMed, Medline, Embase, databases for randomised and non-randomised controlled trials between 2015 and 2020 (09/2015-10/2020), following the PRISMA protocol., Results: This research led us to an analysis, according to PICOS, of six final papers selected among 178 in total. The articles addressed distinct aspects of the PCOS condition, diverse acupuncture techniques and different main and secondary outcomes in agreement to the respective main objective. According to this review, acupuncture seems to be useful for the treatment of this debilitating and chronic health condition which affects millions of women worldwide, many of them part of the workforce in their community., Conclusion: Despite of the display of these positive results addressing acupuncture treatments to manage PCOS major symptoms - whether they are reproductive, metabolic, or mental health features - more research is urgent. Olea europaea L. folium has been studied for its potential nutraceutical properties. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted on samples of Madural, Verdeal, and Cobrançosa elementary leaves and leave sprouts ( mamões ) collected in the region of Valpaços, Portugal. Mineral analysis determined the measurements of the levels of several macro- and micro-elements based on ICP-MS techniques. The inorganic analysis in this work allowed us to propose olive leaf extract (OLE) from different cultivars as a viable and affordable source of mineral substrates to address disorders related to essential elements such as Na, K, Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, and Cu deficiencies. Given the importance of the research on novel therapies, finding a suitable substrate for extracting quality amounts of mineral is a priority. The physiological influence of enzymes dependent on minerals with regard to neuroinflammatory and neurobehavioral, metabolic, cardiovascular, osteodegenerative, anti-aging, pulmonary, and immunological defense disorders might dictate the importance of further research for designing supplementation based on the nutraceutical potential of OLE of these cultivars predominant in the northern region of Portugal.

Olea europaea L. folium merits further exploration of the potential of its substrates for therapeutic supplements. Organic analysis assessed the moisture content, total carbohydrates, ash, protein, and fat contents, total phenolic content (TPC), vitamin E, and fatty acid (FA) profiles. Moisture content was determined through infrared hygrometry and TPC was determined by a spectrophotometric method. Concerning organic analysis, all leaf samples showed similar moisture content, though Cobrançosa's leaf sprouts and Verdeal's elementary leaves had slightly lower contents. Meanwhile, these cultivars also showed a higher TPC, α-tocopherol isomer, and fatty acid composition (FAC). FAC in all samples exhibited higher contents of PUFA and SFA than MUFA, with a predominance of linolenic and palmitic acids. Organic analyses of Cobrançosa's leaf sprouts and Verdeal's elementary leaf extracts allow for the prediction of adequate physiological properties regarding neuroinflammatory, neurobehavioral, metabolic, cardiovascular, osteo-degenerative, anti-ageing, pulmonary, and immunological defense disorders. These physiological changes observed in our preliminary in silico studies suggest an excellent nutraceutical, which should be borne in mind during severe pandemic situations., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

(1) Background: Superficial, including cutaneous and mucocutaneous infections are a current public health problem with universal distribution. One of the main concerns, in the present/future, is fungal/bacterial infections by resistant microorganisms. This study aimed to verify if decoctions of coptidis ( Coptis chinensis , Ranunculaceae family), neem ( Azadirachta indica , Meliaceae family), and their essential oils (EOs), as well as the EO of manuka ( Leptospermum scoparium , Myrtaceae family) have antimicrobial activity against prevalent species of microorganisms responsible for superficial infections. (2) Methods: The antimicrobial activity was determined by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), using broth microdilution method, and minimum lethal concentration (MLC) was determined from subculture of MIC plates. (3) Results: C. chinensis EO and decoction demonstrated some antifungal action against the yeasts and dermatophytes tested. Greatest bactericidal effect against Propionibacterium acnes and some action against Staphylococcus aureus was observed. For A. indica only EO proved activity against dermatophytes and P. acnes . L. scoparium EO showed the broadest antimicrobial spectrum with activity against bacteria, yeasts, and dermatophytes showing greater activity against P. acnes and S. aureus . (4) Conclusions: C. chinensis (EO/decoction), EOs of L. scoparium and A. indica proved in vitro efficacy against fungal, bacterial, or mixed agents of superficial infections, either by sensitive or resistant strains.

This study aimed to compare phase angle (PhA) and bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) values between adult patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia caused by 21-hydroxylase deficiency (CAH21OHD) and a control group. A total of 22 patients (15 women, 22.9 ± 3.7 years) were compared with 17 controls (11 women, 27.0 ± 2.5 years). Body composition was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Bioelectrical impedance was used to calculate PhA, and BIVA was performed using specific software. Student’s t-test and analysis of covariance were used to compare groups. Hedges’ G and partial n2 were calculated for the effect estimates. Hotelling’s t2 test was used to compare the mean impedance vectors between the groups. The Mahalanobis test was used to determine the distance between confidence ellipses. Patients with CAH21OHD had a higher fat mass percentage than that of the control group (both sexes). There was no significant difference in PhA values between groups (CAH21OHD vs. control) in females (6.9° vs. 6.3°, p = 0.092) and males (8.2° vs. 8.1°, p = 0.849), after adjusting for covariates (age and height). BIVA analysis showed a significant difference in the mean impedance vectors between the female groups (T2 = 15.9, D = 1.58, p = 0.003) owing to the higher reactance/height (Δ = 8.5; p < 0.001) of the patients. The PhA did not significantly differ between the groups. Female patients had significantly higher reactance values. However, further studies are needed to determine the usefulness of bioimpedance parameters in evaluating the hydration status and cellular integrity of patients with CAH21OHD.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease. Several pharmacological and surgical therapies have been developed; however, they are accompanied by some adverse effects. As a result, many patients have been resorting to complementary medicine, namely acupuncture, in the hope of obtaining symptomatic improvements without having disruptive side effects. Therefore, advances in research in this area are very important. This work presents a systematic review of the effectiveness of acupuncture treatments in relieving PD symptoms. Methods: EMBASE, Medline, Pubmed, Science Direct, The Cochrane Library, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (Central) and Scielo databases, were systematically searched from January 2011 through July 2021. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published in English with all types of acupuncture treatment were included. The selection and analysis of the articles was conducted by two blinding authors through Rayyan application. Results: A total of 720 potentially relevant articles were identified; 52 RCTs met our inclusion criteria. After the exclusion of 35 articles, we found 17 eligible. The included RCTs reported positive effects for acupuncture plus conventional treatment compared with conventional treatment alone in the UPDRS score. Conclusions: Although all the studies reviewed pointed out a positive effect of acupuncture on improving motor and non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease, we found great discrepancies regarding the studies' design and methodology, making difficult any comparison between them.

We propose a randomized controlled pilot study for an acupuncture protocol regarding the management of PCOS symptoms based on TCM diagnosis; (2) Methods: We will randomly allocate 120 women diagnosed with PCOS into two groups. The study group will be treated with acupuncture for points known to act upon the autonomous regulation of the hormonal, metabolic and emotional components. (3) Results and Conclusions: We expect to provide evidence of high methodological quality related to the effects and safety of an acupuncture protocol based on the perspective of a TCM diagnostic.

Leaf extract of Cydonia Oblonga Mill. is interesting for further exploration of the potential of its substrates for therapeutic supplements. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted on samples of green (October), yellow (November), and brown (December) quince leaves collected in the region of Pinhel, Portugal. Mineral analysis determined the measurements of the levels of several macro- and micro-elements. Organic analysis assessed the moisture content, total phenolic content (TPC), vitamin E, and fatty acid (FA) profiles. Mineral analysis was based on ICP-MS techniques, while the profiles of vitamin E and FA relied on HPLC-DAD-FLD and GC-FID techniques, respectively. Moisture content was determined through infrared hygrometry and TPC was determined by spectrophotometric methods. Regarding the mineral content, calcium, magnesium, and iron were the most abundant minerals. Concerning organic analysis, all leaf samples showed similar moisture content, while the TPC of gallic acid equivalents (GAE) and total vitamin E content, the most predominant of which was the α-tocopherol isomer, showed significant variations between green-brown and yellow leaves. FA composition in all leaf samples exhibited higher contents of SFA and PUFA than MUFA, with a predominance of palmitic and linolenic acids. Organic and inorganic analysis of quince leaves allow for the prediction of adequate physiological properties, mainly cardiovascular, pulmonary, and immunological defenses, which with our preliminary in silico studies suggest an excellent supplement to complementary therapy, including drastic pandemic situations.

This study aimed to compare muscle strength and power indicators according to bioimpedance spectroscopy’s phase angle (PhA) values, in resistance-trained (RT) men, while exploring associations between PhA and performance. Forty-four men aged 18−45 years, engaged in RT, were allocated according to PhA tertiles. Lean soft tissue (LST) and fat mass (%FM) were assessed using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry; dynamic muscle strength using 1 repetition maximum (1RM) of bench press (BP) and back squat (BS) and muscle power using Wingate test (WT) and countermovement jump (CMJ). For WT and CMJ, the 3rd tertile was significantly higher than the 1st tertile (p = 0.027 and p = 0.018, respectively). Regarding BP 1RM, the 3rd tertile was significantly higher than the 2nd tertile (p = 0.037). LST better explained the variability in the WT, BS and BP (p =< 0.001), while %FM better accounted for jump height in CMJ (p =< 0.001). PhA was a predictor of performance in both CMJ (p = 0.040) and BP (p = 0.012), independently of LST and %FM. Participants with higher PhA also displayed superior muscle strength of the upper limbs and greater muscle power of the lower limbs. PhA displayed significant moderate associations with performance in CMJ and BP, even after controlling for body composition. Still, LST was the most important predictor of muscle strength and power.

Background: Cardiovascular comorbidities such as hypertension and inflammatory response dysregulation are associated with worse COVID-19 prognoses. Different cytokines have been proposed to play vital pathophysiological roles in COVID-19 progression, but appropriate prognostic biomarkers remain lacking. We hypothesized that the combination of immunological and clinical variables at admission could predict the clinical progression of COVID-19 in hypertensive patients. Methods: The levels of biomarkers, including C-reactive protein, lymphocytes, monocytes, and a panel of 29 cytokines, were measured in blood samples from 167 hypertensive patients included in the BRACE-CORONA trial. The primary outcome was the highest score during hospitalization on the modified WHO Ordinal Scale for Clinical Improvement. The probability of progression to severe disease was estimated using a logistic regression model that included clinical variables and biomarkers associated significantly with the primary outcome. Results: During hospitalization, 13 (7.8%) patients showed progression to more severe forms of COVID-19, including three deaths. Obesity, diabetes, oxygen saturation, lung involvement on computed tomography examination, the C-reactive protein level, levels of 15 cytokines, and lymphopenia on admission were associated with progression to severe COVID-19. Elevated levels of interleukin-10 and interleukin-12 (p70) combined with two or three of the abovementioned clinical comorbidities were associated strongly with progression to severe COVID-19. The risk of progression to severe disease reached 97.5% in the presence of the five variables included in our model. Introduction and Objectives: Acute liver injury is a current health problem with few effective treatments. The present study investigated the hepatoprotective and curative potential of the glucagon-like peptide-1 analog liraglutide against carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 )-induced hepatotoxicity., Materials and Methods: Male Swiss mice were subjected to two protocols. The first protocol (Pretreatment) consisted of intraperitoneal (i.p.) treatment with liraglutide (0.057 and 0.118mgkg -1 ) or vehicle (distilled water) once daily for 7 days. On days 6 and 7, the animals were challenged with 2% CCl 4 (5mgkg -1 , i.p.). The second protocol (Late treatment) began with an injection of 5% CCl 4 (5mgkg -1 , i.p.) and subsequent treatment with liraglutide (0.057mgkg -1 ) or vehicle (distilled water) for 1 day. In both protocols, 24h after the last administration, blood and bile were collected from anesthetized animals, followed by euthanasia and liver collection. Plasma and bile underwent biochemical analyses, and histological, oxidative stress, and metabolic parameters were evaluated in the liver., Results: Both liraglutide treatment protocols attenuated hepatotoxicity that was induced by CCl 4 , decreasing plasma levels of hepatic enzymes, stimulating the hepatic antioxidant system, and decreasing centrilobular necrosis, hepatic glycogen, and lipid accumulation. CCl 4 tended to reduce bile lipid excretion, but liraglutide did not influence this parameter., Conclusions: The present results demonstrated the hepatoprotective and therapeutic effects of liraglutide, which may be attributable to a decrease in liver oxidative stress and the preservation of metabolism. Pistia stratiotes is a common aquatic plant of the northern region of the state of Rio de Janeiro, and its use as adsorbent material was studied in the present work. The preparation process included washing, drying, grinding, and acid activation. The sorption potential for removal of the indigo carmine dye from aqueous solutions was tested under various conditions, such as initial concentration, contact time, and temperature. The tests showed that the obtained biosorbent showed good performance for dye removal with a maximum capacity of 41.2 mg/g. The kinetic studies revealed that the pseudo-second-order equation provided the best fit of the experimental data. The Freundlich isotherm provided the best fit of the experimental sorption data for the system under study. The results obtained show that Pistia stratiotes has great potential to be used as biosorbent for the removal of dyes from aqueous solutions.

Objective: To evaluate and compare the performance of adults with ADHD with high and standard IQ in executive functions (EF) tasks., Method: We investigated the neuropsychological performance of 51 adults with ADHD, compared with 33 healthy controls (HC) while performing a wide battery of neuropsychological tests that measure executive functioning. Adults with clinical diagnosis of ADHD were divided into two groups according to their IQ level (IQ ≥ 110-ADHD group with more elevated IQ, and IQ < 110-ADHD group with standard IQ)., Results: The ADHD group with standard IQ presented a worse executive functioning compared with the HC group in the following measures: Stroop 2 ( p = .000) and 3 ( p = .000), Trail Making Test (TMT) B ( p = .005), Wisconsin Card-Sorting Test (WCST)-perseverative errors ( p = .022) and failures to maintain set ( p = .020), Continuous Performance Test (CPT)-omission errors ( p = .005) and commission errors ( p = .000), and Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB)-conceptualization ( p = .016). The ADHD group with more elevated IQ presented only impairments in the CPT-commission errors ( p = .019) when compared with the control group., Conclusion: Adults with ADHD and more elevated IQ show less evidence of executive functioning deficits compared with those with ADHD and standard IQ, suggesting that a higher degree of intellectual efficiency may compensate deficits in executive functions, leading to problems in establishing a precise clinical diagnosis.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the effect of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) on pain, nausea, and emesis in patients submitted to surgery for laparoscopic cholecystectomy., Design: A clinical single-masked randomized study assessed patients submitted to laparoscopic cholecystectomy, who were divided into two groups: placebo TENS (G1) and active TENS (G2). The intensity of pain was determined using the visual analog scale and the 11-point Verbal Numerical Scale, applied to the participants before (M1) and 30 mins after (M2) TENS. A conventional biphasic square pulse TENS current was used, at a frequency of 150 Hz and a pulse width of 75 μsecs. The relative risks of the occurrence of nausea and emesis were calculated for groups G1 and G2. Determination of the effect of TENS on analgesia used the Mann-Whitney U test, at a significance level of 5%, to compare independent samples (Dif G1 and Dif G2)., Results: The relative risk of nausea and/or emesis was 2.17 times greater for patients from the placebo group. Pain evaluation using the visual analog scale showed median differences between M1 and M2 of 0.4 and 2.4 for groups G1 and G2, respectively. The values obtained using Verbal Numerical Scale were 0.7 (G1) and 3.0 (G2). The active TENS significantly reduced postoperative pain compared with the placebo (P < 0.016)., Conclusions: Active TENS promoted significant postoperative pain relief, and fewer complaints of nausea and emesis, in patients submitted to laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery.

Several quinonoid and phenazine compounds were synthesized in moderate to high yields and showed activity against H(37)Rv, rifampicin and isoniazid-resistance strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Objective: To analyze the parameters of the time domain P-wave signal-averaged electrocardiogram (P-SAECG) and compare them with the P-wave duration on the conventional electrocardiogram (P on ECG) as well as the left atrium diameter (LAD) and left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) obtained on the echocardiogram in order to evaluate patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF)., Methods: One hundred and eighty-one patients were included in the study: 117 with confirmed PAF and 64 without PAF. The P-SAECG parameters used were: the filtered P-wave duration (FPD), the root mean square (RMS) voltages in the last 40, 30 and 20 ms of the filtered P-wave (RMS 40, RMS 30 and RMS 20), the root mean square voltage of the filtered P-wave potentials (RMS P), the integral of the potentials during the filtered P-wave (Integral P) and the filtered P-wave late potential durations below 3 microV (PL<3)., Results: The parameters that presented significant statistical differences between the groups were: FPD, RMS 40, 30 and 20, PL<3, P on ECG and LAD. The ROC curve calculations demonstrated the best cut-off points and performance estimates for each parameter: sensitivity, specificity, area under the curve and p-value (p)., Conclusion: The time domain P-SAECG proved to be a superior method to identify patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation than the conventional electrocardiogram and echocardiogram.

Objective: To evaluate the frequency, clinical correlations and prognosis influence of late potentials on the of heart failure patients with different etiologies using the signal averaged electrocardiogram., Methods: A 42 month study of the signal averaged electrocardiograms of 288 heart failure patients with different etiologies was conducted. The group of patients included 215 males (74.65%) and 73 females (25.35%) between the ages of 16 and 70 (mean 51.5, standard deviation 11.24). The heart failure etiologies were: hypertensive heart disease (78 patients, 27.1%); idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (73 patients, 25.4%); ischemic cardiomyopathy (65 patients, 22.6%); Chagas disease (42 patients, 14.6%); alcoholic cardiomyopathy (9 patients, 3.1%); peripartum cardiomyopathy (6 patients, 2.1%); valvular heart disease (2 patients, 4.2%) and viral myocarditis (3 patients, 1.04%). The variables included the duration of the standard QRS complex, duration of the filtered QRS complex, duration of the signal below 40 microV and the root mean square of the last 40 ms which were analyzed in regard to age, gender, etiology and mortality as well as the findings of the 12-lead electrocardiogram at rest, echocardiogram and ambulatory electrocardiogram. The statistical analysis tests used were: the Fisher exact probability test, Students t-test, Mann Whitney test, variance analysis, Log-Hank and the Kaplan-Meyer method., Results: Late potentials were diagnosed in 90 patients (31.3%) and there was no association with the etiologies. The presence of this condition is associated with: a lower maximum oxygen uptake during the ergospirometry (p=0.001); sustained and non-sustained ventricular tachycardia during Holter monitoring (p=0.001), sudden death and mortality (p<0.05). Patients that did not present late potentials had a higher overlife rate., Conclusion: The presence of late potentials was not associated with the etiologies and proved to be an indication of a worse prognosis.

Background: There are few reports of pregnancy using immotile sperm, and none using a purely mechanical assessment of viability., Methods: In this pilot study, we retrospectively analysed 66 cycles in 61 patients with determinant male factor, recording rates of fertilization, implantation, normal pregnancy and take-home babies achieved with ICSI. Sperm selection was based on morphologically normal appearance under the inverted microscope. Viability of immotile spermatozoa was assessed by the mechanical touch technique to observe tail flexibility and tail shape recovery., Results: Of 17 ICSI cycles using frozen-thawed testicular sperm, six microinjected with immotile and 11 with motile sperm, we achieved fertilization rates of 65.7 and 74.3%, respectively, and five pregnancies (two and three, respectively). Of 49 ICSI cycles using fresh testicular sperm, 10 microinjected with immotile and 39 with motile sperm, we achieved fertilization rates of 73.4 and 64.4%, respectively, and 12 pregnancies (three and nine, respectively)., Conclusions: Immotile (fresh and frozen-thawed) testicular sperm of normal morphological appearance can be used to achieve clinical pregnancy with ICSI. Our results strongly suggest that immotile sperm viability can be assessed by the mechanical touch technique.

The Fuenzalida-Palacios rabies vaccine has been used in South America for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. To determine the frequency of adverse reactions associated with this vaccine compared to a control group a quasi-experimental study was carried out in Uberlândia, Brazil, from May 1997 to April 1998. Victims of bites or other injuries by dogs or other mammals and who received or not post-exposure prophylaxis with Fuenzalida-Palacios rabies vaccine were compared as to the occurrence of a list of signs and symptoms. Out of 2,440 victims of bites and other injuries from dogs and other mammals 2,114 participated in the study; 1,004 of them provided follow-up information within 10 to 15 days. Headache and pain at the injection sites were the most commonly found symptoms (125/1,000). No neuroparalytic event was detected. Patients who were given Fuenzalida-Palacios rabies vaccine and those who were not had similar incidences of symptoms (risk ratios close to 1). Regarding the occurrence of adverse reactions, Fuenzalida-Palacios rabies vaccine is a valid alternative for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis.

Three different analytical methods comprising colorimetric method with 1,5-diphenyl-carbazide, electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ET AAS) and flame atomic absorption spectrometry were utilized in a study to determine traces of chromium (Cr) in synthetic tannery effluent from laboratory scale treatment process variations. All the results obtained using the three different methods showed good agreement and met the requirement of Brazilian regulation for total Cr for effluent discharges (<0.5 mg l(-1)). However, ET AAS has been the proposed method because it was faster, less laborious, needed smaller volume of sample and presented lower limit of quantification (LOQ=2.2 mug l(-1)).
