Theory of mind is the ability to understand, and infer thoughts or mental states to others. This is a central domain of social cognition that can be impaired after brain injury, resulting in changes in social skills and implications for rehabilitation. The aim of this investigation was to analyze the reliability of the Theory of Mind Task Battery (ToM TB) in post-stroke patients. This is a cross-sectional prospective study with psychometric characteristics, involving 38 patients diagnosed with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke assessed by three examiners using the ToM TB scale, translated and adapted to Brazilian Portuguese. Satisfactory levels of interexaminer agreement were found for almost all categories of the ToM TB: Kappa ranged from 0.036 to 1.00, total score (ICC) from 0.958 to 0.999 and a Cronbach's alpha of 0.658 was obtained with the complete instrument. The Brazilian version of the ToM TB in post-stroke patients is a reliable instrument that can be used to assess the theory of mind, prognosis and rehabilitation of post-stroke patients. Background: The post-stroke subjects have several sequelae after the disease, which should be investigated and identified so that the clinical treatment includes these people in all aspects. Objective: To identify if there is a correlation between level of education, cognitive function, functional independence and the sensory-motor abilities of post-stroke subjects. Methods: The sample consisted of 27 post-stroke patients who were evaluated through the following scales: Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMAA) and sociodemographic data collection. Results: A positive and statistically significant correlation was found between MMSE and FIM. When the scores were correlated with education, motor FIM (p = 0.005), total FIM (p = 0.006), temporal orientation MMSE (p = 0.03) and total MMSE (p = 0.01) were statistically significant. Furthermore, a positive correlation but not statistically significant was identified between the cognitive levels and sensory-motor impairment assessed by FMAA. Conclusion: It is concluded that the education of subjects is associated with motor function after stroke. In addition, cognitive impairments interfere with the level of post-stroke functionality, but do not have a direct influence on the degree of sensory-motor impairment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Shoulder subluxation is a common complication of cerebral vascular accident (stroke) and the use of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) within the rehabilitation process is extremely important. Objective: To analyze the therapeutic effects of FES in the treatment of chronic shoulder subluxation in post-stroke patients. Method: This is a case study of patients with radiologically subluxation confirmed, who were randomly divided into two groups: Control Group (CG) and Treatment Group (TG). Patients were assessed before and after treatment and at the 2-month follow-up. The assessment consisted of the modified Ashworth scale; passive goniometry; Fugl-Meyer scale; McGill pain questionnaire and evaluation of shoulder subluxation by radiography. The CG did not receive physiotherapeutic intervention; and TG underwent 20 sessions of motor kinesiotherapy and FES associated with functional exercises with a total duration of 1 hour, three times a week, for 7 weeks. The data were analyzed descriptively. Results: The mean age of CG participants was 82.5 ± 1.5 years and of the TG was 70.5 ± 13.5 years. All of them were retired, sedentary, non-smokers/alcoholics and had hemiparesis on the left side. There was an approximate increase of 10o for most joint movements of the shoulder, improvement in McGill scale scores and reduction of shoulder subluxation in TG patients. Conclusion: FES associated with functional movements was effective in reducing the degree of subluxation of the shoulder joint and decreased pain in subjectsin the chronic phase of the post-stroke. Background: Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that has a prevalence of 18-328 per 100,000 in habitants in developing countries, with an estimated 3.3% of the Brazilian elderly population affected by PD throughout life. The classic symptoms include a resting tremor, muscular rigidity, bradykinesia and postural instability, which are all motor symptoms. The mobility of the subjects is compromised early, thus impairing their balance and limiting their ability to perform simple tasks. The restricted movement prevents dissociation between the head and trunk during walking, and freezing occurs as advanced disease reduces the progression of movements during walking. Objective: To analyze mobility and functionality profiles in subjects with Parkinson's disease and compare them with healthy subjects. Method: A sample was consisted of 10 subjects with PD and 10 healthy elderly subjects. Assessment tools were used to quantify the severity of PD the scale Hoehn and Yah (HY), for mobility were used the Dynamic Parkinson's Gait Scale (DYPAGS) and Modified Parkinson Activity Scale (PAS modified), for functionality were used the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and dual task (DT) performance. Results: The subjects with PD showed worse performance in mobility and DT as determined by the modified PAS (p=0.0001) and DYPAGS (p=0.0001). Correlations were found between the UPDRS, the Gait Freezing Questionnaire (FOG), the PAS modified score, left-hand grip strength and the HY values (p<0.05). There were no differences in prehensile muscle strength between PD and healthy subjects. Conclusions: Subjects with PD showed decreased mobility and functionality for activities related to ADLs, gait and DT compared to healthy elderly subjects. This article discusses an experimental study that compared the effects of remote and hybrid mindfulness meditation on the well-being of individuals with chronic stroke sequelae. The study was divided into two groups: a remote group and a hybrid group. Participants underwent an 8-week meditation program using a mobile application. The results showed that the remote group had a significant improvement in well-being compared to the hybrid group. However, the small sample size is a limitation of the study. Background: It is estimated that the prevalence of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) increases significantly as a result of the increase in the elderly population, leading to dependence and care. Interventions with physical exercises are essential for patients with chronic CVA and hemiparesis to contribute to functional motor recovery. The gait of the hemiparetic patients is very impaired, including decreased speed, unipodal support in the abbreviated paretic limb, increased step length, decreased hip flexion, increased knee flexion and plantar flexion and involves compensatory strategies to deal with deficits of the affected limb. Rehabilitation programs of patients with CVA should focus on the restoration of the individual's independence and ability to move. Objective: To analyze the effects of the addition of a load on a lower limb not affected in the discharge of weight and motor function of paretic lower limb. Method: Experimental, randomized, double-blind study conducted at the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Outpatient Clinic of the Hospital das Cl'nicas (HC) - UNICAMP. Participants were assessed by the Confidence and Balance Scale, Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Physical Performance (FMA), Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), Postural Stroke Scale for post-stroke patients (PSS), Time up and go test (TUG), 10-Meter gait test, Stroke Scale Barthel and weight transfer in the affected lower limb. Participants were treated in 12 walking training sessions on the treadmill with 1 kg added to the ankle of the lower limb. Results: There were variations between the 3 times for gait time (p= 0.005), FMA (p= 0.002), Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC scale) (p= 0.007) and EAPA (p= 0.042). Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that is rising in many parts of the world causing damage to functionality, quality of life and public health system. Objective: Verify the effects of physical exercise on beta cells of the pancreas in diabetic subjects. Methods: The database Cochrane Library via Wiley -- CENTRAL, Pubmed, LILACS, SCIELO, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL were used to search the articles. The descriptors and synonyms of this topic were used in the search strategy. Controlled randomized clinical trials and quasi-randomized studies, which included in their samples diabetic humans undergone any type of physical exercise were included. The Cochrane collaboration bias risk tool was used to assess the risk of bias. Results: A total of 3.133 articles were initially identified and after reading the titles/abstracts and the full text 6 articles were selected for the qualitative evaluation. Most of the studies showed positive results of physical exercise on pancreatic beta cells, insulin secretion, insulin resistance and insulin sensitivity. The main limitations were the number of studies, few, and their methodological qualities. Conclusions: Physical exercises have beneficial effects on pancreatic beta cells, insulin resistance and insulin sensitivity; however better studies designs, with fewer biases and larger samples are needed so that the results presented do not be overestimated. Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) was initially described as a movement disorder, however there is now recognition that its clinical features also include non-motor symptoms such as cognitive impairment and dementia, which are frequent even in the early stages of the disease and, especially in the advanced stages. Cognitive deficits in PD include impairments in executive functions, attention, memory, and visuospatial skills. Cognitive impairment may manifest as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia, in which MCI refers to the stage between normal cognitive functioning and dementia. Factors associated with cognitive dysfunction in PD include advanced age, low schooling, worse motor scores, stiffness, postural instability and increased daytime sleepiness. Objective: To track cognitive decline and to correlate measurement instruments in subjects with PD by comparing them to healthy subjects. Methods: Study conducted at the Faculty of Health Sciences of Trairi / UFRN. The sample consisted of 20 old people (10 healthy elderlies and 10 elderlies with PD). It was applied the socio-demographic record, Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS II and III), Hoehn & Yahr Scale, Mini Mental State Examination, Legan's Cognitive Test (LCT) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Results: It was observed cognitive decline in both groups by MoCA (90% of the PD group and 80% of the healthy group), with no statistically significant difference (p=0.10). It was also verified association between UPDRS II and LCT (r= -0.69, p=0.03) and between UPDRS III and LCT (r=-0.66, p=0.04). Conclusion: We found a cognitive deficit in the elderly group with PD, with no significant difference when compared to the healthy elderly. Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is neurological conditions typically identified in early childhood. Children with ASD mainly suffer from incapacities in communication and social interaction, in addition to exhibiting unusual patterns of behavior. Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the dual task training in the temporal-spatial aspects of gait in children with ASD. Method: It is a series of case which used as assessments the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), Motor Function Measurement, Tinetti Index and Plantigraphy. The incremental treadmill test was used previously to establish the appropriate velocity of each subject for the accomplishment of the double task protocol. Initially a warm-up of three minutes was done at three km/h, then increments of 1 km/h were performed every three minutes and the maximum speed was obtained when the individual reached the speed limit of their ambulation. All subjects underwent an experimental protocol consisting of performing dual task activities on an Embreex 552® treadmill for four weeks, twice a week on alternate days and each activity lasted three minutes. Results: The sample consisted of 6 individuals. The pre- and post-test values for gait and balance, evaluated using the Tinetti Index, was 23.33 (± 2.87) for the pre-test and 24.16 (± 1.72) for the post-test with no statistical significance (p = 0.317). The types of foot of the sample were 50% flat feet, 25% high arches feet and 25% neutral feet. The axial and proximal motor function presented statistical difference in the intragroup analysis (p = 0.008). Introduction: Previous studies have shown music therapy as a way to improve the clinical status of premature infants, improving vital signs and decreasing crying episodes. Objective: Compare the effects of music on vital signs of premature infants undergoing respiratory physiotherapy. Methods: We performed a randomized clinical trial consisting of 26 premature infants, divided into control group (N=12) and study group (N=14), carried out in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. All newborn infants undergone standard practice physiotherapy for 15 minutes: vibration and aspiration. On the study group they were exposed to classical music three minutes before the standard physiotherapy, and finished three minutes after the end of these procedures. A recorder was placed inside the incubator with an intensity of 25 decibels. Measurements of heart and respiratory rate and oxygen saturation were measured before, during and after each sessions of respiratory physiotherapy for two groups. Results: When comparing control and study groups regarding heart rate frequency and oxygen saturation, there was no statistically significant difference, but the inclusion of music determined clinically the variability of these data and 30% of the variation in respiratory rate was due to the inclusion of music during and after the physiotherapy, and the neonatal noninvasive ventilation showed less variation in their respiratory rate when compared to the neonatal on oxygen therapy. Conclusion: The results have showed a beneficial effect of music, showing lower respiratory rate in newborn infants during and after respiratory physiotherapy procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
