No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016 The enzymatic activity of malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and its isoforms may vary in fishes according their living environment. The aim of this work was to investigate the activity of MDH in the muscle tissue of Astyanax bimaculatus (locally called as lambari do rabo amarelo), collected at three different points (P1, P2 and P3) in the Una River Basin (Taubaté, SP), to evaluate it as a candidate biomarker for environmental change. Cytosolic and mitochondrial isoforms of MDH were extracted from muscles. The results indicated that the total enzyme activity was 1.8 and 2.5 times higher in A. bimaculaus at P2, in comparison to specimens collected at P1 and P3, respectively. Seven MDH isoforms were detected in the muscle tissue (MDH-1 to MDH-7). MDH-1 levels of specimens collected at P3 were 1.9 and 2.4 times higher than those from P1 and P2, respectively. However, the levels of MDH-5,-6 and-7 of P3 specimens were significantly lower than P1 ones. These results are possibly related to water quality, considering that P3 is the most polluted among the three sampling sites. The muscle MDH activity of A. bimaculatus was modulated by the environment. Therefore, it can be concluded that this enzyme could be used as a biomarker of environmental change of the hydrographic basin of a neotropical region, where this species occurs. © 2016, Institute for Environmental Research in Hydrographic Basins (IPABHi). We examined paca placenta as part of a wider effort to understand the reproductive biology of this species.Methods: Thirteen specimens between midgestation and term of pregnancy were studied by light and transmission electron microscopy.Results: the placenta is divided into several lobes separated by interlobular trophoblast. Maternal arterial channels and fetal veins are found at the centre of each lobe. In the labyrinth, maternal blood flows through trophoblast-lined lacunae in close proximity to the fetal capillaries. The interhaemal barrier is of the haemomonochorial type with a single layer of syncytiotrophoblast. Caveolae occur in the apical membrane of the syncytiotrophoblast and recesses in the basal membrane, but there is no evidence of transtrophoblastic channels. The interlobular areas consist of cords of syncytiotrophoblast defining maternal blood channels that drain the labyrinth. Yolk sac endoderm covers much of the fetal surface of the placenta. The subplacenta comprises cytotrophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast. There are dilated intercellular spaces between the cytotrophoblasts and lacunae lined by syncytiotrophoblast. In the junctional zone between subplacenta and decidua, there are nests of multinucleated giant cells with vacuolated cytoplasm. The entire placenta rests on a pedicle of maternal tissue. An inverted yolk sac placenta is also present. The presence of small vesicles and tubules in the apical membrane of the yolk sac endoderm and larger vesicles in the supranuclear region suggest that the yolk sac placenta participates in maternal-fetal transfer of protein.Conclusion: the paca placenta closely resembles that of other hystricomorph rodents. The lobulated structure allows for a larger exchange area and the development of precocial young. 44. Microstructure of undercooled SnSe–SnSe2 hypoeutectic alloy

Abstract

In the present work the fluxing technique was applied to the Sn–51 wt.% Se hypoeutectic alloy. The aim was to study the influence of the undercooling on the microstructure of this alloy, particularly concerning the formation of oriented microstructure and even some metastability occurrence. High undercooling (63 °C) was achieved for the primary SnSe phase leading to an oriented microstructure in the firstly solidified region. Although the undercooling for the eutectic was not so high (19 °C) morphological changes were observed. The rapid movement of the interface interfered with cooperative eutectic growth producing an irregular eutectic in the first region to solidify followed by a fine lamellar and directional eutectic. In order to detect some supersaturated solid solution in the SnSe phase a precise lattice parameter measurement was done from the accurate performed X-ray diffraction (XRD) on the firstly solidified region of the sample. Abstract

In the present work the Zr55Al10Ni5Cu30 alloy has been processed by melt spinning and die-casting into a chilled copper mold. The ribbon was fully amorphous (X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy) and cast samples partially crystalline. The amorphous ribbon was crystallized and analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy. The smaller supercooled liquid range of the glassy ribbons (60 K) and partial crystallization of a larger cast sample during quenching indicate the presence of oxygen in both samples (∼0.8 at.%). Although the crystallization process of the glassy ribbon, a glass transition followed by a single crystallization peak, showed the same crystallization process as reported by the literature, the heat release and the phases formed differed. The main phases formed were Zr2Cu, a complex `big-cube'' fcc Zr4Cu2O-type phase and a tetragonal phase, not reported before to our knowledge, containing a lattice parameter of 2.8 nm.
