In this manuscript, we present a rare case report of giant complex odontoma in the maxillary sinus, where the applied therapy included complete excision of the lesion with a conservative approach. Odontomas are also called benign growth abnormalities or hamartomas. They represent a more common type of odontogenic tumor and are related to various disorders such as bad dental placements, expansion, increased volumetric bone, and no eruption of permanent teeth. Usually they have an asymptomatic evolutionary course. The etiologic factors, although obscure, are related to local trauma, infection, and genetic factor. The structural composition of an odontoma consists of mature dental tissues. Odontomas can be differentiated according to their anatomical presentations: Compound odontoma-clusters of several denticles and complex odontoma-well defined tumefaction mass. Introduction: The association between periodontal disease (PD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is bidirectional, as individuals with CKD may have oral manifestations, and PD may develop as a complicating factor of CKD. The systemic inflammatory response found in periodontal patients may have a synergistic effect on the chronic inflammation found in CKD. Objective: To review the literature to find evidence of the importance of the association between these two conditions. Methods: A PubMed search of studies published between 2003 and 2013 was conducted to retrieve clinical trials and systematic reviews. Results: Six clinical trials and one systematic review met the established criteria. Clinical trials used different approaches for the association between PD and CKD. Studies investigating the association between PD and CKD used a crossover design, evaluation of the oral manifestations in patients with CKD, and analysis of the effect of periodontal treatment on markers of renal disease. Conclusion: In addition to systemic functions, CKD also affects oral health, particularly causing periodontal tissues. Moreover, PD may affect kidney functions and lead to complications in individuals with CKD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the Preventive Dentistry has reduced the decayed teeth by caries, this longevity has increased the occurrence of carious and noncarious cervical lesions. Noncarious cervical lesions described as erosion, abrasion and dental abfraction, constitute the lesions group of greater complexity in the dentistry practice, mainly in relation to the identification of etiologic agent and the proposed treatment. This paper had as objective to show the existing types of noncarious cervical lesions and perform an assessment in 50 patients with inclusion and exclusion criteria which were clinically evaluated and answered a questionnaire of 27 questions. Through this study we observed that the 64% of patients who do not exhibit carious cervical lesion, 62.5% are multifactorial, in other words, there are two or three causes, which are erosion, abfraction and abrasion. From these 62.5% associated cases, the abrasion is present in most cases, with a percentage of approximately 90%. On the other hand, erosion is present in 75.00% and abfraction 55%. The cases that do not represent associated origin are only 37.5%. The majority of these 37.5% is abrasion 83.33%, erosion 8.33% and abfraction 8.33%. The antigens of the Duffy blood group system (DARC) act as a receptor for the interleukin IL-8. IL-8 plays an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic periodontitis due to its chemotactic properties on neutrophils. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible association of Duffy blood group gene polymorphisms with the -353T>A, -845T>C and -738T>A SNPs of the IL8 gene in chronic periodontitis. One hundred and twenty-four individuals with chronic periodontitis and 187 controls were enrolled. DNA was extracted using the salting-out method. The Duffy genotypes and IL8 gene promoter polymorphisms were investigated by PCR-RFLP. Statistical analyses were conducted using the Chi square test with Yates correction or Fisher's Exact Test, and the possibility of associations were evaluated by odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval. When analyzed separately, for the Duffy blood group system, differences in the genotype and allele frequencies were not observed between all the groups analyzed; and, in nonsmokers, the -845C allele (3.6% vs. 0.4%), -845TC genotype (7.3% vs. 0.7%) and the CTA haplotype (3.6% vs. 0.4%) were positively associated with chronic periodontitis. For the first time to our knowledge, the polymorphisms of erythroid DARC plus IL8 -353T>A SNPs were associated with chronic periodontitis in Brazilian individuals. In Afro-Brazilians patients, the FY*02N.01 with IL8 -353A SNP was associated with protection to chronic periodontitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A case-control study was conducted on patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) and healthy controls with the aim of evaluating possible association between interleukin 17A (IL17A) G197A (rs2275913) and IL17F T7488C (rs763780) polymorphisms and periodontitis. Genotypes were determined by PCR-RFLP method. Statistical analyses were conducted using the OpenEpi and SNPStas software to calculate Chi-square with Yates correction or Fisher's exact tests, odds ratios (OR), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). SNPStas software was used to calculate Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. IL17A AA genotype was more frequent in patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) in the codominant and recessive models (P = 0.09; OR = 2.53 and P = 0.03; OR = 2.46, resp.), the females with CP (P = 0.01, OR = 4.34), Caucasoid patients with CP (P = 0.01, OR = 3.45), and nonsmoking Caucasian patients with CP (P = 0.04, OR = 3.51). The IL17A A allele was also more frequent in Caucasians with CP (P = 0.04, OR = 1.59). IL17F T7488C polymorphism was not associated with chronic periodontitis. In these patients from Southern Brazil, the IL17A rs2275913 polymorphisms, IL17A AA genotype, and the A allele were associated with a susceptibility to chronic periodontitis.
