Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) consist of software interacting with the physical world, such as robots, vehicles, and industrial processes. CPS are frequently responsible for the safety of lives, property, or the environment, and so software correctness must be determined with a high degree of certainty. To that end, simply testing a CPS is insufficient, as its interactions with the physical world may be difficult to predict, and unsafe conditions may not be immediately obvious. Formal verification can provide stronger safety guarantees but relies on the accuracy of the verified system in representing the real system. Bringing together verification and implementation can be challenging, as languages that are typically used to implement CPS are not easy to formally verify, and languages that lend themselves well to verification often abstract away low-level implementation details. Translation between verification and implementation languages is possible, but requires additional assurances in the translation process and increases software complexity; having both in a single language is desirable. This paper presents a formalization of MARVeLus, a CPS language which combines verification and implementation. We develop a metatheory for its synchronous refinement type system and demonstrate verified synchronous programs executing on real systems.

We initiate the study of the small scale geometry of operator spaces. The authors have previously shown that a map between operator spaces which is completely coarse (that is, the sequence of its amplifications is equi-coarse) must be $\mathbb R$-linear. We obtain a generalization of the aforementioned result to completely coarse maps defined on the unit ball of an operator space. By relaxing the condition to a small scale one, we prove that there are many non-linear examples of maps which are completely Lipshitz in small scale. We define a geometric parameter for homogeneous Hilbertian operator spaces which imposes restrictions on the existence of such maps.

We introduce a new notion of embeddability between Banach spaces. By studying the classical Mazur map, we show that it is strictly weaker than the notion of coarse embeddability. We use the techniques from metric cotype introduced by M. Mendel and A. Naor to prove results about cotype preservation and complete our study of embeddability between $\ell_p$ spaces. We confront our notion with nonlinear invariants introduced by N. Kalton, which are defined in terms of concentration properties for Lipschitz maps defined on countably branching Hamming or interlaced graphs. Finally, we address the problem of the embeddability into $\ell_\infty$.

We provide a characterization of when a coarse equivalence between coarse disjoint unions of expander graphs is close to a bijective coarse equivalence. We use this to show that if the uniform Roe algebras of coarse disjoint unions of expanders graphs are isomorphic, then the metric spaces must be bijectively coarsely equivalent.

During the past decades, approximate Kohn-Sham density-functional theory schemes garnered many successes in computational chemistry and physics; yet the performance in the prediction of spin state energetics is often unsatisfactory. By means of a machine-learning approach, an enhanced exchange and correlation functional is developed to describe adiabatic energy differences in transition metal complexes. The functional is based on the computationally efficient revision of the regularized strongly constrained and appropriately normed (R2SCAN) functional and improved by an artificial neural-network correction trained over a small dataset of electronic densities, atomization energies and/or spin state energetics. The training process, performed using a bio-inspired non gradient-based approach adapted for this work from Particle Swarm Optimization, is discussed in detail. The meta-GGA functional is finally shown to outperform most known density functionals in the prediction of adiabatic energy differences for both the validation test and the generality test.

We initiate the treatment of KMS states on uniform Roe algebras $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ for a class of naturally occurring flows on these algebras. We show that KMS states on $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ always factor through the diagonal operators $\ell_\infty(X)$. We show the study of those states splits into understanding their strongly continuous KMS states and the KMS states which vanish on the ideal of compact operators. We show strongly continuous states are always unique when they exist and we give explicit formulas for them. We link the study of KMS states which vanish on the compacts to the Higson corona of $X$ and provide lower bounds for the cardinality of the set of extreme KMS states. Lastly, we apply our theory to the $n$-branching tree.

We introduce the notion of asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalence of metric spaces. We show that it is strictly weaker than coarse Lipschitz equivalence. We study its impact on the asymptotic dimension of metric spaces. Then we focus on Banach spaces. We prove that, for $2\leq p<\infty$, being linearly isomorphic to $\ell_p$ is stable under asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalences. Finally, we establish a version of the Gorelik principle in this setting and apply it to prove the stability of various properties of asymptotic uniform smoothness of Banach spaces under asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalences.

We study which von Neumann algebras can be embedded into uniform Roe algebras and quasi-local algebras associated to a uniformly locally finite metric space $X$. Under weak assumptions, these $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras contain embedded copies of $\prod_{k}\mathrm{M}_{n_k}(\mathbb C)$ for any \emph{bounded} countable (possibly finite) collection $(n_k)_k$ of natural numbers; we aim to show that they cannot contain any other von Neumann algebras. One of our main results shows that $L_\infty[0,1]$ does not embed into any of those algebras, even by a not-necessarily-normal $*$-homomorphism. In particular, it follows from the structure theory of von Neumann algebras that any von Neumann algebra which embeds into such algebra must be of the form $\prod_{k}\mathrm{M}_{n_k}(\mathbb C)$ for some countable (possibly finite) collection $(n_k)_k$ of natural numbers. Under additional assumptions, we also show that the sequence $(n_k)_k$ has to be bounded: in other words, the only embedded von Neumann algebras are the ``obvious'' ones.

The nonlinear geometry of operator spaces has recently started to be investigated. Many notions of nonlinear embeddability have been introduced so far, but, as noticed before by other authors, it was not clear whether they could be considered ``correct notions''. The main goal of these notes is to provide the missing evidence to support that \emph{almost complete coarse embeddability} is ``a correct notion''. This is done by proving results about the complete isomorphic theory of $\ell_1$-sums of certain operators spaces. Several results on the complete isomorphic theory of $c_0$-sums of operator spaces are also obtained.

We consider operators on $L^2$ spaces that expand the support of vectors in a manner controlled by some constraint function. The primary objects of study are $\mathrm C^*$-algebras that arise from suitable families of constraints, which we call support expansion $\mathrm C^*$-algebras. In the discrete setting, support expansion $\mathrm C^*$-algebras are classical uniform Roe algebras, and the continuous version featured here provides examples of "measurable" or "quantum" uniform Roe algebras as developed in a companion paper. We find that in contrast to the discrete setting, the poset of support expansion $\mathrm C^*$-algebras inside $\mathcal B(L^2(\mathbb R))$ is extremely rich, with uncountable ascending chains, descending chains, and antichains.

Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon (CdGM) states are localized states with a discrete energy spectrum bound to the core of vortices in superconductors. In topological superconductors, CdGM states are predicted to coexist with zero-energy, chargeless states widely known as Majorana zero modes (MZMs). Due to their energy difference, current experiments rely on scanning tunneling spectroscopy methods to distinguish between them. This work shows that electrostatic inhomogeneities can push trivial CdGM states arbitrarily close to zero energy in non-topological systems where no MZM is present. Furthermore, the BCS charge of CdGM states is suppressed under the same mechanism. Through exploration of the impurity parameter space, we establish that these two phenomena generally happen in consonance. Our results show that energy and charge shifts in CdGM may be enough to imitate the spectroscopic signatures of MZMs even in cases where the estimated CdGM level spacing (in the absence of impurities) is much larger than the typical experimental level broadening., Comment: Revised and expanded version. 8 pages, 5 figures
