This study aimed to assess the effects of rock dust on Meloidogyne javanica in soybean grown in autoclaved and non-autoclaved soil and investigate the impacts on plant foliar nutrition. The nematode reproduction experiment was conducted in two periods (Trials 1 and 2) in a 5 × 2 factorial design (rock dust rates of 0, 1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 kg ha−1 × autoclaved and non-autoclaved soil). Soybean were inoculated with 2000 eggs + second-stage juveniles (J2) of M. javanica, and nematode and vegetative variables were evaluated at 60 days after inoculation (DAI). The penetration experiment followed a 2 × 2 factorial design (rock dust rates of 0 and 2500 kg ha−1 × autoclaved and non-autoclaved soil). Soybean were inoculated with 2000 eggs + J2 of M. javanica and evaluated at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 DAI. The shoot dry biomass from the reproduction experiment (Trial 1) was analyzed for macro- and micronutrients. In Trial 1, nematode reproduction decreased proportionally to the increase in rock dust rate in non-autoclaved soil. In Trial 2, the lowest nematode numbers were predicted to be achieved with rates of 2213 to 2309 kg ha−1, and nematode numbers were lower in autoclaved than in non-autoclaved soil. Rock dust reduced J2 penetration at 10 and 15 DAI, and there was no formation of females in treated plants. Rock dust application increased foliar levels of Fe, B, and Cu. Rock dust reduced M. javanica reproduction, penetration, and development in soybean and promoted gains in Fe, Cu, and B foliar contents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to assess the susceptibility of rice genotypes to Pratylenchus brachyurus and investigate the inheritance of resistance in the crop. Two experiments were conducted under controlled conditions, using naturally infested soil. Twenty-six rice genotypes were assessed, with maize used to show the susceptibility pattern. The maize was cultivated for 90 days and the initial nematode population was determined. Then, rice genotypes were cultivated, and the final nematode population and the reproduction factor (RF) were estimated 90 days after germination. All genotypes were susceptible to P. brachyurus in the two experiments but only one showed statistical differences, indicating variation in susceptibility, and genotypes Linhagem L03-107 and Cateto Amarelo scored higher than the control genotype, with RF of 8.80 and 9.48, respectively. Inheritance of resistance was poorly influenced by genotype genetics. Cluster analysis allowed the identification of five different groups of genotypes but there was low genetic variability among the genotypes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a crop succession using plant species of economic importance on a population of Pratylenchus brachyurus in soybean. Two experiments were carried out at different times of year by means of a fully randomized arrangement, with nine treatments and four replicates consisting of three rice genotypes (Ana 9001, Iapar 9, and hybrid Ecco CL), millet cv. AMN-17, Crotalaria juncea, cotton cv. IPR 140, sunflower cv. Syn 045, fallow, and maize cv. BRAS 3010 as the check. First, soybean cv. BRS 284 was cultivated for 60 d, followed by the various plant species (treatments) and finally the soybean cv. BRS 284 once again completed the succession. The experimental units consisted of 1-L pots containing two plants cultivated in sandy soil initially inoculated with 2,000 P. brachyurus per pot. At the end of the experiment, the weight of soybean root, the number of specimens of P. brachyurus per gram of root and per 100 cm3 of soil, and the final total population were evaluated. There was no significant difference among the treatments for the fresh weight in experiment 1 and the number of nematodes in 100 cm3 soil in the experiment 2. All treatments showed reproduction of P. brachyurus when compared to the check. Of the species studied, Crotalaria juncea and rice cv. Iapar 9 exhibited lower reproduction of the nematode. If these two plant species are to be used in succession with soybean, the population of the nematode in the area should be monitored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents the result of an experiment on the effect of the nematode species Pratylenchus zeae Graham on the plant species crotalaria (Crotalaria spectabilis), dwarf pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), velvet bean (Macuna aterrima), jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis). The species of stylosanthes (Stylosanthes capitata + Stylosanthes macrocephala) and maize (Zea mays) cv. IPR 114 are also studied. The values of penetration of the nematode in maize roots and other plants are measured.
