Abstract

This study investigates the structural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) flat slabs supported on edge columns and the influence of eccentricity direction on their punching shear strength. For this purpose, code provisions were compared based on the ultimate capacities of experimental tests reported in the literature. The comparison included the approaches provided by the current Eurocode 2, fib Model Code 2010 and the final draft of the second generation of Eurocode 2 (FprEC2). Then, a numerical investigation was conducted in which full‐scale slabs tested by Albuquerque et al. (2016) were simulated. Numerical analyses were carried out in the software Diana using a total strain‐based crack model to simulate the concrete nonlinear behavior. The input parameters for the simulations were obtained through a stochastic calibration approach to account for uncertainties related to the concrete properties. A reasonable agreement was found between the calibrated numerical models and the experimental results regarding load‐deflection curves and crack patterns. Furthermore, important differences were identified in the failure mode of edge column‐slab connections subjected to inward and outward eccentricities. Finally, additional simulations were carried out to obtain a full shear‐moment interaction diagram and investigate the shear distribution at the control perimeters around the column. The proposed method in FprEC2 exhibited a good estimation with a relatively low scatter of the punching resistance of flat slab‐edge column connections analyzed in this work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

13. A Pn magnitude scale mb( Pn ) for earthquakes along the equatorial Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Abstract

We developed a short-period Pn magnitude scale mb(Pn) for earthquakes along the equatorial Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Due to low signal-to-noise ratios, teleseismic body wave magnitude and long-period surface wave magnitude cannot be confidently determined for small earthquakes of mb < 4. Local magnitude scales are also not useful for these events because the oceanic environment does not allow the propagation of crustal phases. However, regional high-frequency Pn waves from these small- to moderate-size (mb 3–6) earthquakes are well recorded in the equatorial Atlantic region and can be used to assign magnitudes. We measured over 2 041 Pn peak amplitudes on vertical records from about 20 stations in northeastern Brazil and 11 stations in western Africa in the distance range of 700–3,700 km. We analyzed data from 189 events from the global centroid moment tensor catalog to tie our mb(Pn) scale to MW so that seismic moments can be readily estimated. Pn arrivals show apparent group velocity between 7.9 km/s at short ranges (∼1,000 km) and up to 9.1 km/s at 3,500 km. The measured peak amplitudes have a frequency between 0.8 and 3 Hz at 1 000–1,800 km, but at greater distances, 1 800–3,700 km, they show a remarkably consistent frequency of about 0.8 Hz. The peak amplitude attenuates at a higher rate at short distances (∼0.65 magnitude units between 700–2,000 km) but attenuates at a lower rate at long distances (∼0.35 magnitude units between 2 000 and 3,700 km). The low rate of amplitude decay with distance and nearly constant frequency content of the peak amplitudes suggest that Pn waves propagate efficiently in the lower part of the upper mantle in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean basins. These are important attributes of oceanic Pn waves that can be used to assign magnitude for small- to moderate-size earthquakes in the equatorial mid-Atlantic region. The estimated station corrections correlate well with upper mantle low-velocity anomalies, especially in Brazil.

19. Variations in Pn seismic velocities and lithospheric thermal structure across Mendocino fracture zone, eastern Pacific ocean

Abstract

Oceanic lithosphere varies considerably around the globe, with different geodynamic settings that contribute to various models of seismotectonic activity over the tectonic plate boundaries. Lithospheric age, temperature, and thickness are three fundamental features to understand the geodynamic behavior. However, the model in which they influence the seismic wave propagation is poorly understood over different oceanic areas. Here, we analyze the behavior of seismic velocities and lithospheric thickness from measurements of uppermost mantle-Moho Pn velocities and thermal structure modeling over the Mendocino fracture zone (MFZ), eastern Pacific ocean. We use data obtained by 21 ocean-bottom instruments deployed across the MFZ in October-December of 2017. We present results obtained from 19 regional earthquakes of global catalogs with magnitudes $\geq$2.5, with their epicenters raging from 311 to 588 km away. We obtained 205 Pn ray paths with Pn velocities ranging from 8.01$\pm$0.1 to 8.48$\pm$0.2 km/s. The results presented correlations between the increase in Pn velocities with the lithosphere aging and the velocity decrease in parallel to the increase of temperatures. Also, the highest velocities are directed near parallel to the fracture zone and perpendicular to the ridge axis. The lithospheric thermal model show that the down limitation bounding with the asthenosphere is placed at $\sim$29-74 km depth comparing the young (8 Ma) and older (33 Ma) sides of the fracture zone. Therefore, our results demonstrate the MFZ particular area is fundamental to the understanding of seismic wave propagation over the uppermost mantle-Moho zone and the lithosphere thickness dependence over geodynamic features.

O uso de informação contendo inverdades ou fatos deturpados, sobretudo, veiculação de notícias falsas ou “fake news”, é um fenômeno que tende a ocasionar ônus diversos a micro ou macro cenários. O presente artigo possui caráter descritivo analítico e busca debater as fake news nas eleições e sua relação ao Direito de Personalidade e de Responsabilidade, à luz da jurisprudência brasileira sobre uso de desinformação e fake news. O estudo se desenvolve a partir da análise dos conceitos do termo Fake News, e sua relação com a desinformação e a evolução da pós-verdade relacionando a tríade ao processo eleitoral, e os impactos que a fake news - desinformação pós-verdade. A seguir, o texto se debruça na análise do Direito à Personalidade e da Dignidade da Pessoa Humana, que são inerentes ao indivíduo e como esses direitos são afetados pelos processos de enfatização das fake news, dentro das perspectivas dos direitos individuais e coletivos ora fundamentados na Constituição. Por fim, o estudo aborda as questões referentes à responsabilidade civil e criminal do indivíduo que efetiva a ação de fabricação ou difusão das fake News, desinformação e promoção do fenômeno da pós-verdade, bem como os impactos causados por tais ações. A luz do que foi trazido no presente podemos então concluir que a proteção aos direitos à personalidade é resguardado em todas as esferas do direito. O uso indiscriminado de desinformação e fake news no processo eleitoral brasileiro, tende a impactar negativamente a ordem democrática, logo os direitos de personalidade, e, portanto, as ações de combate e educação devem ser imputadas e concretas no cotidiano da população, à luz da Constituição, com base na legislação infraconstitucional, na doutrina e na jurisprudência brasileira.

So, we analyzed three infographics published on the section Beste Bedingungen für deine Partnersuche (The best conditions for your partner search) of the Parship platform homepage--a European agency in the online dating and relationship segment--dedicated to the proportion of women and men, the application's success rate, and the academic quota of their users. We conclude that the agency suggests fallacious conclusions from supposedly accurate statistics to increase its performance by manipulating the scale of the dependent variable. Abstract

Rabies is an ancient neuroinvasive viral (genus Lyssavirus, family Rhabdoviridae) disease affecting approximately 59,000 people worldwide. The central nervous system (CNS) is targeted, and rabies has a case fatality rate of almost 100% in humans and animals. Rabies is entirely preventable through proper vaccination, and thus, the highest incidence is typically observed in developing countries, mainly in Africa and Asia. However, there are still cases in European countries and the United States. Recently, demographic, increasing income levels, and the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic have caused a massive raising in the animal population, enhancing the need for preventive measures (e.g., vaccination, surveillance, and animal control programs), postexposure prophylaxis, and a better understanding of rabies pathophysiology to identify therapeutic targets, since there is no effective treatment after the onset of clinical manifestations. Here, we review the neuroimmune biology and mechanisms of rabies. Its pathogenesis involves a complex and poorly understood modulation of immune and brain functions associated with metabolic, synaptic, and neuronal impairments, resulting in fatal outcomes without significant histopathological lesions in the CNS. In this context, the neuroimmunological and neurochemical aspects of excitatory/inhibitory signaling (e.g., GABA/glutamate crosstalk) are likely related to the clinical manifestations of rabies infection. Uncovering new links between immunopathological mechanisms and neurochemical imbalance will be essential to identify novel potential therapeutic targets to reduce rabies morbidity and mortality. Abstract

International audience; Memory B-cell and antibody responses to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein contribute to long-term immune protection against severe COVID-19, which can also be prevented by antibody-based interventions. Here, wide SARS-CoV-2 immunoprofiling in Wuhan COVID-19 convalescents combining serological, cellular, and monoclonal antibody explorations revealed humoral immunity coordination. Detailed characterization of a hundred SARS-CoV-2 spike memory B-cell monoclonal antibodies uncovered diversity in their repertoire and antiviral functions. The latter were influenced by the targeted spike region with strong Fc-dependent effectors to the S2 subunit and potent neutralizers to the receptor-binding domain. Amongst those, Cv2.1169 and Cv2.3194 antibodies cross-neutralized SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, including Omicron BA.1 and BA.2. Cv2.1169, isolated from a mucosa-derived IgA memory B cell demonstrated potency boost as IgA dimers and therapeutic efficacy as IgG antibodies in animal models. Structural data provided mechanistic clues to Cv2.1169 potency and breadth. Thus, potent broadly neutralizing IgA antibodies elicited in mucosal tissues can stem SARS-CoV-2 infection, and Cv2.1169 and Cv2.3194 are prime candidates for COVID-19 prevention and treatment.

Abstract

SARS-CoV-2 Omicron sublineages carry distinct spike mutations and represent an antigenic shift resulting in escape from antibodies induced by previous infection or vaccination. We show that hybrid immunity or vaccine boosters result in potent plasma neutralizing activity against Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 and that breakthrough infections, but not vaccination-only, induce neutralizing activity in the nasal mucosa. Consistent with immunological imprinting, most antibodies derived from memory B cells or plasma cells of Omicron breakthrough cases cross-react with the Wuhan-Hu-1, BA.1 and BA.2 receptor-binding domains whereas Omicron primary infections elicit B cells of narrow specificity. While most clinical antibodies have reduced neutralization of Omicron, we identified an ultrapotent pan-variant antibody, that is unaffected by any Omicron lineage spike mutations and is a strong candidate for clinical development.

48. Enhancement of the punching shear verification of slabs with openings.

Abstract

Openings in flat slabs near to columns are often needed to supply the building with utilities. The presence of these openings can lead to a decrease of the punching resistance which is related to (i) the reduction of the control perimeter, (ii) the stress concentrations at the edges of the openings, (iii) the reduction of the unitary shear resistance caused by increased flexural deformations, and (iv) the moment transfer in the slab connection in case of unsymmetrical openings. The effect of the openings on the punching shear resistance is strongly related to the geometry, the location, the number, and the size of the openings. To quantify the strength reduction due to the openings, current code approaches account for a reduction of the control perimeter defined by radial lines from the centroid of the column to the edges of the opening. Even though slabs with opening have been investigated since the 1960s, available experimental evidence on the behavior of slabs with openings without shear reinforcement is scarce and some effects are neglected in current design codes. Eurocode 2 and fib Model Code do not consider the effect of unsymmetrical openings leading to moment transfer in the slab‐column connection. ACI 318:2019 recommends considering these cases as free edges; however, additional information is necessary to perform the analysis. The present paper analyses a database of 68 flat slab specimens with openings according to ACI 318:2019, current Eurocode 2 (EN 1992‐1‐1:2004), the draft for the second generation (prEN 1992‐1‐1:2021), fib MC 2010:2013, and the Critical Shear Crack Theory. This paper proposes a new approach and a new definition of the control perimeter to improve the prediction of the punching shear resistance of slabs with openings based on the results of the database, the previous studies, and the linear‐elastic analyses of the shear force distribution along the control perimeter.
