1. Magnetic reconnection as an erosion mechanism for magnetic switchbacks

Abstract

Magnetic switchbacks are localised polarity reversals in the radial component of the heliospheric magnetic field. Observations from Parker Solar Probe (PSP) have shown that they are a prevalent feature of the near-Sun solar wind. However, observations of switchbacks at 1 au and beyond are less frequent, suggesting that these structures evolve and potentially erode through yet-to-be identified mechanisms as they propagate away from the Sun. We analyse magnetic field and plasma data from the Magnetometer and Solar Wind Analyser instruments aboard Solar Orbiter between 10 August and 30 August 2021. During this period, the spacecraft was 0.6 to 0.7 au from the Sun. We identify three instances of reconnection occurring at the trailing edge of magnetic switchbacks, with properties consistent with existing models describing reconnection in the solar wind. Using hodographs and Walen analysis methods, we test for rotational discontinuities (RDs) in the magnetic field and reconnection-associated outflows at the boundaries of the identified switchback structures. Based on these observations, we propose a scenario through which reconnection can erode a switchback and we estimate the timescales over which this occurs. For our events, the erosion timescales are much shorter than the expansion timescale and thus, the complete erosion of all three observed switchbacks would occur well before they reach 1 au. Furthermore, we find that the spatial scale of these switchbacks would be considerably larger than is typically observed in the inner heliosphere if the onset of reconnection occurs close to the Sun. Hence, our results suggest that the onset of reconnection must occur during transport in the solar wind in our cases. Abstract

Solar Orbiter is the first space mission observing the solar plasma both in situ and remotely, from a close distance, in and out of the ecliptic. The ultimate goal is to understand how the Sun produces and controls the heliosphere, filling the Solar System and driving the planetary environments. With six remote-sensing and four in-situ instrument suites, the coordination and planning of the operations are essential to address the following four top-level science questions: (1) What drives the solar wind and where does the coronal magnetic field originate? (2) How do solar transients drive heliospheric variability? (3) How do solar eruptions produce energetic particle radiation that fills the heliosphere? (4) How does the solar dynamo work and drive connections between the Sun and the heliosphere? Maximising the mission's science return requires considering the characteristics of each orbit, including the relative position of the spacecraft to Earth (affecting downlink rates), trajectory events (such as gravitational assist manoeuvres), and the phase of the solar activity cycle. Furthermore, since each orbit's science telemetry will be downloaded over the course of the following orbit, science operations must be planned at mission level, rather than at the level of individual orbits. It is important to explore the way in which those science questions are translated into an actual plan of observations that fits into the mission, thus ensuring that no opportunities are missed. First, the overarching goals are broken down into specific, answerable questions along with the required observations and the so-called Science Activity Plan (SAP) is developed to achieve this. Abstract

Fluctuations of solar wind magnetic field and plasma parameters exhibit a typical turbulence power spectrum with a spectral index ranging between $\sim -5/3$ and $\sim -3/2$. In particular, at $1$ AU, the magnetic field spectrum, observed within fast corotating streams, also shows a clear steepening for frequencies higher than the typical proton scales, of the order of $\sim 3\times10^{-1}$ Hz, and a flattening towards $1/f$ at frequencies lower than $\sim 10^{-3}$ Hz. However, the current literature reports observations of the low-frequency break only for fast streams. Slow streams, as observed to date, have not shown a clear break, and this has commonly been attributed to slow wind intervals not being long enough. Actually, because of the longer transit time from the Sun, slow wind turbulence would be older and the frequency break would be shifted to lower frequencies with respect to fast wind. Based on this hypothesis, we performed a careful search for long-lasting slow wind intervals throughout $12$ years of Wind satellite measurements. Our search, based on stringent requirements not only on wind speed but also on the level of magnetic compressibility and Alfv\'enicity of the turbulent fluctuations, yielded $48$ slow wind streams lasting longer than $7$ days. This result allowed us to extend our study to frequencies sufficiently low and, for the first time in the literature, we are able to show that the $1/f$ magnetic spectral scaling is also present in the slow solar wind, provided the interval is long enough. However, this is not the case for the slow wind velocity spectrum, which keeps the typical Kolmogorov scaling throughout the analysed frequency range. After ruling out the possible role of compressibility and Alfv\'enicity for the 1/f scaling, a possible explanation in terms of magnetic amplitude saturation, as recently proposed in the literature, is suggested.

Abstract

The solar wind plasma is a fully ionized and turbulent gas ejected by the outer layers of the solar corona at very high speed, mainly composed by protons and electrons, with a small percentage of helium nuclei and a significantly lower abundance of heavier ions. Since particle collisions are practically negligible, the solar wind is typically not in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium. Such a complex system must be described through self-consistent and fully nonlinear models, taking into account its multi-species composition and turbulence. We use a kinetic hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell numerical code to reproduce the turbulent energy cascade down to ion kinetic scales, in typical conditions of the uncontaminated solar wind plasma, with the aim of exploring the differential kinetic dynamics of the dominant ion species, namely protons and alpha particles. We show that the response of different species to the fluctuating electromagnetic fields is different. In particular, a significant differential heating of alphas with respect to protons is observed. Interestingly, the preferential heating process occurs in spatial regions nearby the peaks of ion vorticity and where strong deviations from thermodynamic equilibrium are recovered. Moreover, by feeding a simulator of a top-hat ion spectrometer with the output of the kinetic simulations, we show that measurements by such spectrometer planned on board the Turbulence Heating ObserveR (THOR mission), a candidate for the next M4 space mission of the European Space Agency, can provide detailed three-dimensional ion velocity distributions, highlighting important non-Maxwellian features. These results support the idea that future space missions will allow a deeper understanding of the physics of the interplanetary medium.

Abstract

Background & Aims: The ANSWER study reported that long-term albumin administration in patients with cirrhosis and uncomplicated ascites improves survival. During treatment, serum albumin increased within a month and remained stable thereafter. In this post hoc analysis, we aimed to determine whether on-treatment serum albumin levels could guide therapy. Methods: Logistic regression was used to assess the association between baseline serum albumin and mortality, as well as to determine on-treatment factors associated with mortality and to predict the achievement of a given on-treatment serum albumin level. Survival was assessed by Kaplan-Meier estimates and second-order polynomial regression. Patients whose on-treatment serum albumin remained below normal were compared with a subset of patients from the control arm matched by principal score. Results: Baseline serum albumin was closely associated with 18-month mortality in untreated patients; albumin treatment almost effaced this relationship. On-treatment serum albumin and MELD-Na at month 1 were the sole independent variables associated with mortality. Second-order polynomial regression revealed that survival improved in parallel with increased 1-month on-treatment serum albumin. Kaplan-Meier estimations showed that any value of 1-month on-treatment serum albumin (0.1 g/dl intervals) in the range 2.5–4.5 g/dl discriminated patient survival. In the normal range of serum albumin, the best discriminant value was 4.0 g/dl. Compared to untreated patients, survival even improved in patients whose on-treatment serum albumin remained below normal. Conclusion: Baseline serum albumin per se should not guide the decision to start albumin therapy. Conversely, 1-month on-treatment serum albumin levels are strongly associated with outcomes and could guide the use of albumin – 4.0 g/dl being the target threshold. Abstract

Spintronics holds great potential for next-generation high-speed and low-power consumption information technology. Recently, lead halide perovskites (LHPs), which have gained great success in optoelectronics, also show interesting magnetic properties. However, the spin-related properties in LHPs originate from the spin-orbit coupling of Pb, limiting further development of these materials in spintronics. Here, we demonstrate a new generation of halide perovskites, by alloying magnetic elements into optoelectronic double perovskites, which provide rich chemical and structural diversities to host different magnetic elements. In our iron-alloyed double perovskite, Cs2Ag(Bi:Fe)Br6, Fe3+ replaces Bi3+ and forms FeBr6 clusters that homogenously distribute throughout the double perovskite crystals. We observe a strong temperature-dependent magnetic response at temperatures below 30 K, which is tentatively attributed to a weak ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic response from localized regions. We anticipate that this work will stimulate future efforts in exploring this simple yet efficient approach to develop new spintronic materials based on lead-free double perovskites.

Abstract

We study the radial evolution, from 0.1 AU to the Earth, of a homogeneous recurrent fast wind, coming from the same source on the Sun, by means of new measurements by both Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe. With respect to previous radial studies, we extend, for the first time, the analysis of a recurrent fast stream at distances never reached prior to the Parker Solar Probe mission. Confirming previous findings, the observations show: (i) a decrease in the radial trend of the proton density that is slower than the one expected for a radially expanding plasma, due to the possible presence of a secondary beam in the velocity distribution function; (ii) a deviation for the magnetic field from the Parker prediction, supported by the strong Alfvenicity of the stream at all distances; and (iii) a slower decrease in the proton temperature with respect to the adiabatic prediction, suggesting the local presence of external heating mechanisms. Focusing on the radial evolution of the turbulence, from the inertial to the kinetic range along the turbulent cascade, we find that the slopes, in both frequency ranges, strongly depend on the different turbulence observed by the two spacecraft, namely a mostly parallel turbulence in the Parker Solar Probe data and a mostly perpendicular turbulence in the Solar Orbiter intervals. Moreover, we observe a decrease in the level of intermittency for the magnetic field during the expansion of the stream. Furthermore, we perform, for the first time, a statistical analysis of coherent structures around proton scales at 0.1 AU and we study how some of their statistical properties change from the Sun to the Earth. As expected, we find a higher occurrence of events in the Parker Solar Probe measurements than in the Solar Orbiter data, considering the ratio between the intervals length and the proton characteristic scales at the two radial distances. Abstract

ObjectiveAfter a previous survey on the incidence of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at onset of type 1 diabetes in children in 2013–2014 in Italy, we aimed to verify a possible decline in the incidence of DKA at onset during a national prevention campaign.DesignProspective observational study.SettingMulticentre study throughout Italy.InterventionNational awareness campaign started in November 2015 and held until December 2017.PatientsDuring 2016 and 2017 we collected data on all patients aged 0–18 years with new-onset diabetes.Main outcome measuresDKA (pH ResultsRecords (n=2361) of children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes were collected from 58 out of 68 (85.3%) centres of the original survey participants and 100% of the previously surveyed tertiary centres. Overall, DKA was observed in 1124 patients, with an increased rate when compared with the previous survey (47.6% vs 38.5%, p=0.002), and severe DKA in 15.3%. In children below 6 years, DKA was observed in 323 out of 617 (52.5%) and severe DKA in 16.7%; in this age group, occurrence of DKA reduced by 21.3% (p=0.009). DKA treatment according to the ISPED guidelines was adopted in 95% of the centres, with a 27% improvement (p=0.025).ConclusionsDuring a 2-year awareness campaign, DKA at onset of diabetes in children and adolescents 0–18 years is still common and increased when compared with the 2013–2014 survey.

Abstract

Os sistemas agroflorestais biodiversos são uma estratégia de manejo do solo que busca promover interações benéficas entre componentes bióticos e abióticos. A nogueira-pecã é uma espécie arbórea de ciclo longo e de grande porte, que influenciará de maneira decisiva os sistemas que ela integra. O objetivo deste trabalho é estabelecer padrões de comportamento das cultivares de nogueira-pecã dentro do sistema agroflorestal. Neste experimento realizado entre 2015 e 2017, a cultivar foi o fator de variação avaliado, sendo considerados quatro tratamentos: ‘Barton’, ‘Cape Fear’, ‘Desirable’ e ‘Shawnee’. As variáveis analisadas foram: altura e diâmetro das plantas; número de gemas por ramo; número de ramos; diâmetro e comprimento de ramo e números de folhas por ramo; área foliar; número de folíolos, peso fresco e seco; número de racimos e flores; inflorescências e ataque de formiga. Com relação ao comportamento reprodutivo, a cultivar Barton apresentou uma dicogamia do tipo protândrica, ‘Cape Fear’ oscilou o comportamento, demonstrando-se protogínica na primeira safra e protândrica na seguinte. ‘Barton’ e ‘Cape Fear’ demonstraram melhor desempenho reprodutivo do que ‘Desirable’ e ‘Shawnee’ em sistemas agroflorestais, porém, requer-se estudos que incluam a fase reprodutiva e considere outras cultivares. Abstract

Context. In mid-June 2020, the Solar Orbiter (SolO) mission reached its first perihelion at 0.51 au and started its cruise phase, with most of the in situ instruments operating continuously. Aims. We present the in situ particle measurements of the first proton event observed after the first perihelion obtained by the Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) suite on board SolO. The potential solar and interplanetary (IP) sources of these particles are investigated. Methods. Ion observations from similar to 20 keV to similar to 1 MeV are combined with available solar wind data from the Radio and Plasma Waves (RPW) instrument and magnetic field data from the magnetometer on board SolO to evaluate the energetic particle transport conditions and infer the possible acceleration mechanisms through which particles gain energy. We compare > 17-20 MeV ion count rate measurements for two solar rotations, along with the solar wind plasma data available from the Solar Wind Analyser (SWA) and RPW instruments, in order to infer the origin of the observed galactic cosmic ray (GCR) depressions. Results. The lack of an observed electron event and of velocity dispersion at various low-energy ion channels and the observed IP structure indicate a local IP source for the low-energy particles. From the analysis of the anisotropy of particle intensities, we conclude that the low-energy ions were most likely accelerated via a local second-order Fermi process. The observed GCR decrease on 19 June, together with the 51.8-1034.0 keV nuc(-1) ion enhancement, was due to a solar wind stream interaction region (SIR). The observation of a similar GCR decrease in the next solar rotation favours this interpretation and constitutes the first observation of a recurrent GCR decrease by SolO. The analysis of the recurrence times of this SIR suggests that it is the same SIR responsible for the He-4 events previously measured in April and May. Abstract

Context. Solar Orbiter, the new-generation mission dedicated to solar and heliospheric exploration, was successfully launched on February 10, 2020, 04:03 UTC from Cape Canaveral. During its first perihelion passage in June 2020, two successive interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs), propagating along the heliospheric current sheet (HCS), impacted the spacecraft. Aims. This paper addresses the investigation of the ICMEs encountered by Solar Orbiter on June 7-8, 2020, from both an observational and a modeling perspective. The aim is to provide a full description of those events, their mutual interaction, and their coupling with the ambient solar wind and the HCS. Methods. Data acquired by the MAG magnetometer, the Energetic Particle Detector suite, and the Radio and Plasma Waves instrument are used to provide information on the ICMEs' magnetic topology configuration, their magnetic connectivity to the Sun, and insights into the heliospheric plasma environment where they travel, respectively. On the modeling side, the Heliospheric Upwind eXtrapolation model, the 3D COronal Rope Ejection technique, and the EUropean Heliospheric FORecasting Information Asset (EUHFORIA) tool are used to complement Solar Orbiter observations of the ambient solar wind and ICMEs, and to simulate the evolution and interaction of the ejecta in the inner heliosphere, respectively. Results. Both data analysis and numerical simulations indicate that the passage of two distinct, dynamically and magnetically interacting (via magnetic reconnection processes) ICMEs at Solar Orbiter is a possible scenario, supported by the numerous similarities between EUHFORIA time series at Solar Orbiter and Solar Orbiter data. Conclusions. The combination of in situ measurements and numerical simulations (together with remote sensing observations of the corona and inner heliosphere) will significantly lead to a deeper understanding of the physical processes occurring during the CME-CME interaction.

Abstract

Context. Turbulence dominated by large-amplitude, nonlinear Alfven-like fluctuations mainly propagating away from the Sun is ubiquitous in high-speed solar wind streams. Recent studies have demontrated that slow wind streams may also show strong Alfvenic signatures, especially in the inner heliosphere. Aims. The present study focuses on the characterisation of an Alfvenic slow solar wind interval observed by Solar Orbiter between 14 and 18 July 2020 at a heliocentric distance of 0.64 AU. Methods. Our analysis is based on plasma moments and magnetic field measurements from the Solar Wind Analyser (SWA) and Magnetometer (MAG) instruments, respectively. We compared the behaviour of different parameters to characterise the stream in terms of the Alfvenic content and magnetic properties. We also performed a spectral analysis to highlight spectral features and waves signature using power spectral density and magnetic helicity spectrograms, respectively. Moreover, we reconstruct the Solar Orbiter magnetic connectivity to the solar sources both via a ballistic and a potential field source surface (PFSS) model. Results. The Alfvenic slow wind stream described in this paper resembles, in many respects, a fast wind stream. Indeed, at large scales, the time series of the speed profile shows a compression region, a main portion of the stream, and a rarefaction region, characterised by different features. Moreover, before the rarefaction region, we pinpoint several structures at different scales recalling the spaghetti-like flux-tube texture of the interplanetary magnetic field. Finally, we identify the connections between Solar Orbiter in situ measurements, tracing them down to coronal streamer and pseudostreamer configurations. Conclusions. The characterisation of the Alfvenic slow wind stream observed by Solar Orbiter and the identification of its solar source are extremely important aspects for improving the understanding of future observations of the same solar wind regime

Abstract

Background: Evidence is scarce on the efficacy of long-term human albumin (HA) administration in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. The human Albumin for the treatmeNt of aScites in patients With hEpatic ciRrhosis (ANSWER) study was designed to clarify this issue. Methods: We did an investigator-initiated multicentre randomised, parallel, open-label, pragmatic trial in 33 academic and non-academic Italian hospitals. We randomly assigned patients with cirrhosis and uncomplicated ascites who were treated with anti-aldosteronic drugs (≥200 mg/day) and furosemide (≥25 mg/day) to receive either standard medical treatment (SMT) or SMT plus HA (40 g twice weekly for 2 weeks, and then 40 g weekly) for up to 18 months. The primary endpoint was 18-month mortality, evaluated as difference of events and analysis of survival time in patients included in the modified intention-to-treat and per-protocol populations. This study is registered with EudraCT, number 2008–000625–19, and ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01288794. Findings: From April 2, 2011, to May 27, 2015, 440 patients were randomly assigned and 431 were included in the modified intention-to-treat analysis. 38 of 218 patients died in the SMT plus HA group and 46 of 213 in the SMT group. Overall 18-month survival was significantly higher in the SMT plus HA than in the SMT group (Kaplan-Meier estimates 77% vs 66%; p=0·028), resulting in a 38% reduction in the mortality hazard ratio (0·62 [95% CI 0·40–0·95]). 46 (22%) patients in the SMT group and 49 (22%) in the SMT plus HA group had grade 3–4 non-liver related adverse events. Interpretation: In this trial, long-term HA administration prolongs overall survival and might act as a disease modifying treatment in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. Abstract

International audience; Solar Orbiter is the first space mission observing the solar plasma both in situ and remotely, from a close distance, in and out of the ecliptic. The ultimate goal is to understand how the Sun produces and controls the heliosphere, filling the Solar System and driving the planetary environments. With six remote-sensing and four in-situ instrument suites, the coordination and planning of the operations are essential to address the following four top-level science questions: (1) What drives the solar wind and where does the coronal magnetic field originate?; (2) How do solar transients drive heliospheric variability?; (3) How do solar eruptions produce energetic particle radiation that fills the heliosphere?; (4) How does the solar dynamo work and drive connections between the Sun and the heliosphere? Maximising the mission's science return requires considering the characteristics of each orbit, including the relative position of the spacecraft to Earth (affecting downlink rates), trajectory events (such as gravitational assist manoeuvres), and the phase of the solar activity cycle. Furthermore, since each orbit's science telemetry will be downloaded over the course of the following orbit, science operations must be planned at mission level, rather than at the level of individual orbits. It is important to explore the way in which those science questions are translated into an actual plan of observations that fits into the mission, thus ensuring that no opportunities are missed. First, the overarching goals are broken down into specific, answerable questions along with the required observations and the so-called Science Activity Plan (SAP) is developed to achieve this. The SAP groups objectives that require similar observations into Solar Orbiter Observing Plans, resulting in a strategic, top-level view of the optimal opportunities for science observations during the mission lifetime. This allows for all four mission goals to be addressed. In this paper, we introduce Solar Orbiter's SAP through a series of examples and the strategy being followed.

Abstract

One of the outstanding scientific questions in space physics is how charged particles are accelerated up to supra-thermal energies and how they are transported through the inner heliosphere. Such problems match some of the scientific objectives of the Solar Orbiter Science Activity Plan and represent the main scientific cases discussed in the Italian SWA-Solar Orbiter Working Group (WG) on "Particle Energization" (https://sites.google.com/view/italian-solar-orbiter-swa/research-interests/particle-energization?authuser=0). The WG started its activities on May 2020 and gathers experts of in-situ observations, remote sensing, and numerical simulations. This variety of expertises is fundamental for reaching the science objectives. Indeed, candidates for particle acceleration are shocks driven by eruptive phenomena in the solar corona as the coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Thanks to the joint combination between in-situ (as MAG, SWA, EPD) and remote sensing (EUI, METIS) instruments on board Solar Orbiter and to its vicinity to the Sun, we will have the opportunity to study, with unprecedented precision, the onset of CMEs and the properties of the induced shocks propagating in the interplanetary medium. Thus, parameters as the sonic Mach number, the compression ratio and the shock geometry (both when shocks form in the corona and then propagate in the interplanetary space) will give a quantitative estimation of the shocks evolution and their capability to accelerate particles. Then, the investigation of the phenomena involved in the acceleration and propagation of solar energetic particles (SEPs) that were difficult to resolve from prior observations, will be carried out. Further, being close to the source of acceleration, it will be possible to investigate the properties of the local energetic particle "seed" population. In this abstract we would like to present the ongoing activity of the Italian SWA WG on "Particle Energization", pointing out the physical problems discussed during the last months, with particular focus on the possible analysis of Solar Orbiter data (both in-situ and remote sensing) in the framework of particle energization, which we propose to carry out once the data will be available to the scientific community.

Abstract

Since inter-particle collisions are to a large extent negligible, the solar wind plasma is typically observed in a state far from thermodynamic equilibrium, meaning that the velocity distributions of particles of different species display significant deviations from a single Maxwellian. These deviations retain the whole history of the interaction of particles with the turbulent electromagnetic fields. Simultaneous measurements of fields and particle velocity distributions at kinetic scales made at different radial distances can help in tracking this history backwards allowing one to identify the physical mechanisms at play to heat and accelerate particles in the interplanetary medium close to the Sun and all along solar wind expansion. In this scenario, data from the Solar Wind Analyzer instrument onboard the ESA Solar Orbiter mission are very promising in addressing the kinetic physics of protons, ions and electrons in the solar wind close to the Sun. The Italian SWA-Solar Orbiter Working Group entitled "Kinetic Processes" has been formed in May 2020 and gathers scientists from several Italian and international institutions and with different expertises (theoretical modeling, observational data analysis and numerical simulations), who convene periodically to discuss these scientific subjects. The main scientific goals of this working group are (i) to maximize the scientific return of Solar Orbiter data within the Heliospheric communities and (ii) to identify open scientific questions and relevant physical problems for which Solar Orbiter data could play a key role and help scientists to find answers and explanations. Exploitation of combined measurements from the in-situ instruments (SWA, MAG, EPD and RPW) onboard Solar Orbiter will provide the unique opportunity of attacking fundamental plasma physics processes responsible for energy exchanges between fluctuations and particles. In this Abstract, we will present some of the activities carried on within the Italian SWA-Solar Orbiter WG "Kinetic Processes" in the last few months, with the aim of engaging the broader scientific community into the discussion and in preparation of the release of the first Orbiter data.

Abstract

Despite more than a half-century of study, the basic physical processes responsible for heating and accelerating the solar wind are still not fully understood. These phenomena are at the center of a hot debate that is of great interest for the Solar Orbiter mission (as discussed in details in the Science Activity Plan, SAP) and are strictly linked to the turbulent nature of solar wind fluctuations which cover an extended range of spatial and temporal scales. So the identification of these physical processes is of primary importance for understanding the origins and evolution of the solar wind and its impact on the different bodies of the solar system. Moreover, in a broader context, it would allow also to achieve significant progress in our understanding of stellar astrophysics. Within this context, the Italian Solar Orbiter-SWA Working Group (WGs) on `Multiscale Physics' was created in response to the interest manifested by scientists from several Italian and international institutions on some important topics such as radial evolution of turbulence and Alfvénicity and link between fluid and kinetic scales; solar wind origin; reconnection, intermittency and particle acceleration in the turbulent solar wind (just to cite some of them), with a particular attention to the synergies with other in-situ and remote sensing instruments on board Solar Orbiter and also with other ESA and NASA missions (e.g. L1 observatories and Parker Solar Probe). The `Multiscale Physics' WG involves scientists with an extensive experience in solar wind turbulence and reconnection processes including expertise in data analysis, simulations and modeling. In this contribution, we present the activity developed so far with a particular focus on the scientific cases identified.

Uma das espécies frutíferas que atualmente mais cresce em importância econômica no Brasil é a nogueira-pecã, principalmente pelo aumento do consumo do fruto e pela valorização de mercado. No entanto,com esse crescimento,vão surgindo muitos problemas, dúvidas e dificuldades de comunicação entre os envolvidos com a cultura, sendo necessário estudos que abordem e estabeleçam informações técnicas e padronizadas,de forma a melhorar o entendimento e o manejo da cultura através do acompanhamento fenológico, da polinização e da irrigação. Diante disso, o objetivo do estudo foi propor e acompanhar uma escala fenológica, avaliar a influência da polinização e da irrigação nas dimensões e rendimentos dos frutos de nogueira-pecã. Para atender os objetivos,o trabalho foi organizado em três capítulos. O primeiro trata-se de uma proposta e aplicação da escala fenológica BBCH ajustada para nogueira-pecã. No segundo capítulo avaliou-se o efeito do pólen de diferentes cultivares no rendimento e dimensões de frutos da ?Kiowa? e da ?Barton?. No terceiro capítulo avaliou-s eo uso da irrigação no crescimento e rendimento de frutos. A partir dos resultados obtidos foi possível concluir que a escala fenológica proposta é de fácil aplicabilidade e facilitará a comunicação científica e técnica entre os profissionais da área e produtores. O pólen de diferentes cultivares demonstraram potencial ?efeito xenia? positivo e negativo nas características dos frutos, enquanto a autopolinização reduz as dimensões e rendimento dos frutos e das amêndoas. Durante o desenvolvimento dos frutos de nogueira-pecã, a ocorrência de períodos de déficit hídrico afeta a dimensão e o enchimento das nozes, sendo que a utilização de irrigação proporciona maiores dimensões e massa dos frutos. Abstract

International audience; The exponential growth of data volume experienced by astronomy and astrophysics causes new disciplines like machine learning (ML) and data mining (DM) to gain more and more ground in these fields. Applications like clustering, feature selection, automatic classification of events are proving to be a valuable aid in exploiting space data in the era of the synergy between "pure" science and "data-driven" science. The Italian Solar Orbiter-SWA Working Group on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence1 together with the European Commission Horizon 2020 project AIDA2, has the scope of applying ML and DM analysis techniques to the Solar Orbiter data. The implementations are numerous. First of all these new techniques can be used to discover unexpected relations between data, can automate tasks so that they can be carried out without human intervention, and can help to forecast physical properties and events. A non-exhaustive list of these activities includes automatic detection of coronal holes in images, automatic recognition of plasma regions, prediction of solar wind properties at 1 AU, classification of solar wind type based on new indicators, analysis of particle velocity distribution functions. In addition, this Working Group will integrate the existing software developed in the context of the various heliospheric missions with the parts regarding Solar Orbiter. These packages are able to handle complex data set with ease and provide statistical analysis and visualization tools. Catalogs of scientific data are also produced, which report, among others, magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration events, detected by routines trained to browse data and select physical processes and features of interest.
