Abstract

Nanoporous metals are a class of nanostructured materials finding extensive applications in multiple fields thanks to their unique properties attributed to their high surface area and interconnected nanoscale ligaments. They can be pre-pared following different strategies, but the deposition of an arbitrary pure porous metal is still challenging. Recently, a dry synthesis of nanoporous films based on the plasma treat-ment of metal thin layers deposited by physical vapour deposition has been demonstrated, as a general route to form pure nanoporous films from a large set of metals. An interest-ing aspect related to this approach is the possibility to apply the same methodology to deposit the porous films as a multilayer. In this way, it is possible to explore the properties of different porous metals in close contact. As demonstrated in this paper, interesting plasmonic properties emerge in a nanoporous Au-Ag bi-layer. The versatility of the method coupled with the possibility to include many different metals, provides an opportunity to tailor their optical resonances and to exploit the chemical and mechanical properties of compo-nents, which is of great interest to applications ranging from sensing, to photochemistry and photocatalysis.

Abstract

The 3-dimensional spatial and 2-dimensional frontal QRS-T angles are measures derived from the vectorcardiogram. They are independent risk predictors for arrhythmia, but the underlying biology is unknown. Using multi-ancestry genome-wide association studies we identify 61 (58 previously unreported) loci for the spatial QRS-T angle (N = 118,780) and 11 for the frontal QRS-T angle (N = 159,715). Seven out of the 61 spatial QRS-T angle loci have not been reported for other electrocardiographic measures. Enrichments are observed in pathways related to cardiac and vascular development, muscle contraction, and hypertrophy. Pairwise genome-wide association studies with classical ECG traits identify shared genetic influences with PR interval and QRS duration. Phenome-wide scanning indicate associations with atrial fibrillation, atrioventricular block and arterial embolism and genetically determined QRS-T angle measures are associated with fascicular and bundle branch block (and also atrioventricular block for the frontal QRS-T angle). We identify potential biology involved in the QRS-T angle and their genetic relationships with cardiovascular traits and diseases, may inform future research and risk prediction.

Abstract

In spite of their ubiquitous applications, the characterization of glass fibers by means of all-optical techniques is still facing some limitations. Recently, X-ray absorption has been proposed as a method for visualizing the inner structure of both standard and microstructure optical fibers. Here, we exploit X-ray absorption as nondestructive technique for the characterization of optical glass fibers. Starting from absorption contrast X-ray computed micro-tomography measurements, we obtain information about the spatial profile of the fiber refractive index at optical frequencies. We confirm the validity of our approach by comparing its results with complementary characterization techniques, based on electron spectroscopy or multiphoton microscopy.

Abstract

Metasurfaces have been extensively engineered to produce a wide range of optical phenomena, allowing unprecedented control over the propagation of light. However, they are generally designed as single-purpose devices without a modifiable post-fabrication optical response, which can be a limitation to real-world applications. In this work, we report a nanostructured planar fused silica metalens permeated with a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) and gold nanoparticle solution. The physical properties of embedded NLCs can be manipulated with the application of external stimuli, enabling reconfigurable optical metasurfaces. We report all-optical, dynamic control of the metalens optical response resulting from thermo-plasmonic induced changes of the NLC solution associated with the nematic-isotropic phase transition. A continuous and reversible tuning of the metalens focal length is experimentally demonstrated, with a variation of 80 um (0.16% of the 5 cm nominal focal length) along the optical axis. This is achieved without direct mechanical or electrical manipulation of the device. Abstract

Research on multimode optical fibers is arousing a growing interest, for their capability to transport high-power laser beams, coupled with novel nonlinear optics-based applications. However, when beam intensities exceed a certain critical value, optical fiber breakdown associated with irreversible modifications of their refractive index occurs, triggered by multiphoton absorption. These processes have been largely exploited for fiber material microstructuration. Here we show that, for intensities slightly below the breakdown threshold, nonlinear absorption strongly affects the dynamics of a propagating beam as well. We experimentally analyze this sub-threshold regime, and highlight the key role played by spatial self-imaging in graded-index fibers for enhancing nonlinear optical losses. We characterize the nonlinear power transmission properties of multimode fibers for femtosecond pulses propagating in the near-infrared spectral range. We show that an effective N-photon absorption analytical model is able to describe well the experimental data.

Abstract

Metalenses offer the ground-breaking opportunity to realize highly performing low-weight, flat and ultrathin, optical elements which substantially reduce size and complexity of imaging systems. Today, a major challenge in metalenses design is still the realization of achromatic optical elements ideally focussing a broad wavelength spectrum at a single focal length. Here we present a fast and effective way to design and fabricate extremely thin all-dielectric metalenses, optimally solving achromaticity issues by means of machine learning codes. The enabling technology for fabrication is a recently developed hyper resolute two-photon direct laser writing lithography equipment. The fabricated metalenses, based on a completely flat and ultrathin design, show intriguing optical features. Overall, achromatic behavior, focal length of 1.14 mm, depth of focus of hundreds of microns and thickness of only few nanometers allow considering the design of novel and efficient imaging systems in a completely new perspective.

Abstract

Ultrafast control of light-matter interactions constitutes a crucial feature in view of new technological frontiers of information processing. However, conventional optical elements are either static or feature switching speeds that are extremely low with respect to the timescales at which it is possible to control light. Here, we exploit high-quality-factor engineered epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) modes of a metal-insulator-metal nanocavity to realize an all-optical ultrafast modulation of the reflectance of light at a tailored wavelength. Our approach is based on the presence of the two, spectrally separated, ENZ absorption resonances of the cavity. Optical pumping of the system at its high energy ENZ mode leads to a strong red-shift of the low energy mode because of the transient increase of the local dielectric function, which leads to a sub-3-ps control of the reflectance at a specific wavelength with a relative modulation depth approaching 120%.

Abstract

This work presents numerical and experimental results of plasmonic Metal-Insulator optical nano-cavities. The systems are composed of Silver as metal, polyvinylpyrrolidone or indium tin oxide or zinc oxide as insulator. The proposed nano-cavities exhibit extraordinary effects as colors changing in function of the incident/view angles, enhancement of the experimental real and imaginary parts of the pseudo dielectric constant, an extraordinary transmission of 50$\%$ and zero reflection for both polarizations at the resonant wavelengths. These results lead to the formation and propagation of surface plasmon polaritons and their hybridization in gap surface plasmons. The concurrence of these effects allow studying the Goos-H\"anchen shift by exploiting the very narrow $\Delta$ and $\Psi$ ellipsometer parameters. Thank to their optical properties, the proposed nano-cavities could be applied in several fields such tunable color filters, optics, photonics and sensing.

Abstract

In recent years significant efforts have been made to design and fabricate functional nanomaterials for biomedical applications based on the control of light matter interaction at the nanometer scale. Among many other artificial materials, hyperbolic dispersion metamaterials allow to access unprecedented physical effects and mechanisms due to the extreme anisotropy of their optical constants. The unbound isofrequency surface of hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) enable the possibility to support a virtually infinite density of states and ultra-high confinement of electromagnetic fields, allowing perfect absorption of light and extreme sensing properties. Optical sensor technology based on plasmonic metamaterials offers significant opportunities in the field of clinical diagnostics, particularly for the detection of low-molecular-weight biomolecules in highly diluted solutions. In this context, we present a computational effort to engineer a biosensing platform based on hyperbolic metamaterials, supporting highly confined bulk plasmon modes integrated with out-of-plane chiral metasurfaces. The role of the helicoidal chiral metasurface is manifold: i) as a diffractive element to increase the momentum of the incoming light to excite the plasmon sensing modes with linearly and circularly polarized light; ii) as out-of-plane extended sensing surface to capture target analytes away from the substrate thereby the diffusion limit; iii) as a plamonic chiral nanostructure with enhanced sensing performance over circularly polarized reflectance light.

24. Numerical modeling of active thermo-plasmonics experiments

Abstract

In this paper, we present a simple and robust numerical method able to predict, with high accuracy, the photo-thermal effects occurring for a gold nanoparticles arrangement under externally applied strain. The physical system is numerically implemented in the COMSOL Multiphysics simulation platform. The gold nanoparticles distributions are excited by linearly polarized light. By considering the system at rest and under the action of a mechanical stress, we analyze the extinction cross section, and we observe the production of heat at the nanoscale. The purpose of this work is to describe how sensitive the local temperature of the gold nanoparticles arrangement is to the formation of localized photo-thermal hot spots.

Abstract

A simple and robust method able to predict, with high accuracy, the optical properties of single and multi-layer nanostructures is presented. The method exploits a COMSOL Multiphysics simulation platform and it has been validated by three case studies with increasing numerical complexity: i) a single thin layer (20 nm) of Ag deposited on a glass substrate; ii) a metamaterial composed of five bi-layers of Ag/ITO (Indium Tin Oxide), with a thickness of 20 nm each; iii) a system based on a three-materials unit cell (AZO/ITO/Ag), but without any thickness periodicity (AZO stands for Al$_2$O$_3$/Zinc Oxide). Numerical results have been compared with experimental data provided by real ellipsometric measurements performed on the above mentioned nanostructures ad-hoc fabricated. The obtained agreement is excellent suggesting this research as a valid approach to design materials able to work in a broad spectrum range., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are pivotal regulators of gene expression, influencing key cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and metastasis. In the realm of sarcomas—a diverse group of malignant tumors affecting soft tissues and bone sarcomas—miRNAs have emerged as crucial players in tumorigenesis and tumor progression. This review delves into the intricate roles of miRNAs across various soft tissue sarcoma subtypes, including rhabdomyosarcoma, liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, fibrosarcoma, angiosarcoma, undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS), and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). We explore how dysregulated miRNAs function as oncogenes or tumor suppressors, modulating critical pathways that define the aggressive nature of these cancers. Furthermore, we discuss the diagnostic and prognostic potential of specific miRNAs and highlight their promise as therapeutic targets. By understanding the miRNA-mediated regulatory networks, this review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current research while pointing towards future directions for miRNA-based therapies. Our findings underscore the potential of miRNAs to transform the landscape of sarcoma treatment, offering hope for more precise, personalized, and effective therapeutic strategies. Abstract

Novel optical sources require fast decay rates, making hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) an increasingly attractive option. HMMs are well‐known for their remarkable anisotropy, and leverage hyperbolic dispersion to enhance the decay rate of a fluorophore placed on top of them. This study tackles the complex task of embedding a fluorophore into an HMM, successfully overcoming challenges related to surface roughness, thickness imperfections, and layer washing effects. Specifically, CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs)‐based HMM are fabricated, by alternating silver/nanocrystals (Ag/NCs) layers. Through a systematic investigation of the photophysical response following the deposition of each bilayer, compelling evidence of the achievement of hyperbolic dispersion is provided. Specifically, the impact of "high‐k" modes is isolated, which is distinctive to the HMM architecture. Therefore, the longstanding debate regarding the number of bilayers needed to achieve hyperbolic dispersion is conclusively resolved. The research demonstrates a nearly twofold increase in the decay rate and a threefold enhancement in photoluminescence intensity. These findings are further supported by theoretical Purcell factor calculations. This study marks a pioneering advancement in the field of bulk dye‐embedded HMMs, laying the groundwork for the development of advanced optical sources such as "resonant gain HMMs".
