Objectives: To systematically evaluate randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on whether adjuvant application of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) through the technique of irradiation in the external region of the periodontal pocket with optic‐fibre tip offers benefits to scaling and root planning (SRP). Methods: Five databases were searched by two independent reviewers according to pre‐specified eligibility criteria up to April 2023. No restrictions regarding date of publication, language and minimum follow‐up period were imposed. The Cochrane Collaboration's Risk of Bias tool (RoB 2.0) was used for quality appraisal and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation for assessing the certainty of evidence. Results: A total of 1388 publications were identified and reviewed for eligibility. Four of them fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The sample consisted of a total of 83 patients with periodontitis. In these, 330 periodontal sites were evaluated. The clinical findings of the majority of the included studies demonstrated that patients who received the association of aPDT + RAR with the protocol evaluated here, obtained clinical results similar to patients who received only the SRP alone. In none of the evaluated RCTs, clinical advantages were observed that would categorise this aPDT protocol as superior to conventional treatment. Conclusion: Applying aPDT after SRP with external irradiation of the periodontal pocket does not seem to result in any clinical benefit compared to the use of SRP alone in patients with periodontitis. Fatigue is a reversible change in biological, physical and psychic functions, resulting from the imbalance of the organism. In patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), fatigue has been cited as one of the most frequent symptoms, especially in individuals with metastasis. It can significantly limit daily activities in order to be considered as a chronic condition, in particular, when associated with painful symptoms. The objective of this studt was to report the occurrence of fatigue and pain in patients with HNC. This was a series of prospective clinical cases describing the clinical history of four patients with HNC submitted to radio chemotherapeutic treatment, users of a public oncology service. To assess the degree of fatigue, the Brief Fatigue Inventory questionnaire was applied at five different moments during the antineoplastic treatment and pain analysis, an analog pain scale was used. The analysis of the questionnaires showed that fatigue was a frequent complaint and intensified with the advance of antineoplastic therapy. Its occurrence was also related to the difficulty performing daily activities. Painful symptomatology has been reported by patients to varying degrees. The occurrence of fatigue and pain in patients with HNC presents variability due to the individual's own experience, reflected by their socioeconomic and cultural context and their personal perception of the illness process. Chemotherapy for cancer treatment offers the possibility of eradicating neoplastic cells, however, its use can result in systemic and oral adverse effects, with emphasis on the qualitative-quantitative modification of saliva. To evaluate the stimulated salivary flow rate (SFR) in patients undergoing chemotherapy for treatment of solid malignancies. This was a cross-sectional study with twenty patients diagnosed with solid tumors undergoing chemotherapy with cytotoxic drugs. Subjects were submitted to stimulated sialometry in the 1st cycle of chemotherapy (baseline, 7th day and 14th day). Additionally, sociodemographic data regarding these patients were collected in a standardized questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis were performed, with a significance level of p<0.05. There was a predominance of women (75%) aged over 40 years old (90%). The most prevalent tumor location was breast (55%), followed by ovaries (15%), and the most used drug was cyclophosphamide (50%). In the sample, no statistically significant result was observed with regard to SFR (p>0.05) in the studied periods. The data suggest that the 1st cycle of chemotherapy was not able to induce significant changes in the SFR. New studies need to be performed for the prospective identification of potential changes in salivary parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is primarily responsible for the development of painful mucocutaneous viral lesions in the head and neck region. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) consists of the use of a photosensitizing chemical substance, which interacts with an appropriate light source under the presence of oxygen, with consequent destruction or microorganisms’ inactivation . The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review on the use of aPDT in the treatment of HSV-1, as well as to identify and characterize the main photosensitizing agents used in this technique. This was a narrative literature review, based on the research of scientific articles carried out in the PubMed database, from February to June 2021, using the crossing of the descriptors Decs/Mesh “photodynamic therapy” and “viral infection”; “photodynamic therapy” and “herpes virus”. According to the established criteria, a total of 27 articles published in the last 20 years were included. The results demonstrate that despite the scarcity of studies involving aPDT in herpetic lesions, a single application of this therapy and with different protocols improved the clinical appearance and associated symptoms. Thus, antiviral PDT has been shown to be effective in in vitro and in vivo studies, regardless of the dye used. However, more controlled clinical trials need to be carried out in order to establish the real effectiveness of this therapeutic resource in viral infections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Patients affected with microcephaly have a head circumference below the average for sex and age, and in most cases it is associated with altered brain structure, developmental problems and dysmorphic facial features. Thus, the objective of this study was to describe the therapeutic approaches for dental care of patients with microcephaly. The selection of scientific articles for the study construction was carried out through the databases Scielo, Medline, Bireme and PubMed with a total selection of 16 scientific articles with years of cut-off between 2010 to 2019. Microcephaly affects not only the patient's general health status, but also dental care, which is hampered by the small number of professionals qualified to care for special patients and the little knowledge of the craniofacial and dental characteristics of these individuals. In most cases, the dental surgeon is unprepared and insecure before these patients, which is hampered by the little knowledge they have of their main oral and craniofacial characteristics. Thus, the professional is unable to determine clinical procedures to be performed. Thus, it can be concluded that it is necessary for the dentist to have knowledge about microcephaly and provide instruction to the children's parents and guardians in this condition, thus facilitating the dental procedures execution. Radiotherapy is an important treatment of oral and maxillofacial malignancies. Among the various effects of this locoregional therapy, osteoradionecrosis (ORN) plays a prominent role due to its physical and psychological impact on cancer patients. In the literature, the therapeutic approach of ORN varies from a conservative to invasive surgery treatment. Objective: collect in the scientific literature, concise and current information about the benefits of using these therapies in the ORN. The present literature review selected articles based on the titles that addressed osteoradionecrosis treatment, as well as the evaluation systems adopted. After previous analysis, 22 relevant articles were included on the proposed theme. According to the literature, several hypotheses have been established to explain the etiopathogenesis of ORN, as numerous evaluation systems have been developed in the last years. Regarding the main therapeutic modalities used, new less invasive therapies have acquired space, such as ozone therapy, laser therapy associated with photodynamic therapy and drugs, such as vitamin, antifibrotic and anti-resorptive. However, in spite of the promising results, new randomized clinical trials have to be performed in an attempt to discover the real effectiveness of these therapies in the ORN. Therefore, it becomes a challenging issue for dental surgeons, since it requires the constant monitoring and long term of these patients, due to the risk of progression or recurrence of this condition.
