Lucy Meredith Bryce (1897-1968), hematóloga e investigadora médica australiana, estableció en 1929 el Servicio de Transfusión de Sangre de la Cruz Roja de Victoria en Melbourne, el primero de estas características en el continente austral. Instauró procedimientos para seleccionar donantes, tipificar los grupos sanguíneos y almacenar la sangre, adoptando algunos de los métodos desarrollados por Frederic Duran Jordà durante la Guerra Civil Española (1936-1939). El servicio se expandió drásticamente durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939-1945), período durante el cual Bryce ocupó el rango de mayor en el Cuerpo Médico del Ejército Australiano. Se jubiló de su cargo en el Banco de Sangre en 1954, aunque continuó como presidenta honoraria del comité de transfusiones hasta 1966. En 1951 fue nombrada Dama Comandante de la Orden del Imperio Británico. Se trata de una primera aproximación a la figura de Lucy Bryce y a las actividades realizadas en el Servicio de Transfusión de Sangre de la Cruz Roja de Victoria, con vistas a analizar su compromiso humanitario.

On 25th January 1939, the day before Barcelona was seized by Franco's troops, Madame Perdomo (Julia Lahaye Jonckheer, Laken [Brussels] 1886 - Barcelona 1978), a Belgian nurse apparently settled in Spain from 1922, who had been convicted in absentia of spying for the Reich during World War I, played a crucial mediating role in guaranteeing the physical integrity of the Francoist prisoners of war from Montjuïc castle by commission of the ICRC delegates at Barcelona, as Marcel Junod highlighted in his memoirs (1951). Since 1937 she had been deeply involved in the organisation and managing of the Red Cross blood transfusion services at Barcelona throughout the entire Civil War (1936-1939), but shortly after her humanitarian mission in Montjuïc, Perdomo's trail was, to the best of our knowledge, lost until the publication of her obituary in 1978. Humanitarian action of individuals and aid organizations has been always modulated by differential beliefs, ideologies, socio-political agendas and gender; not to mention its potential instrumentation at the expense of other agendas above the humanitarian one. The examination of Madame Perdomo's diverse background as a spy and as a nurse, her leadership role in war situations and her experiences of care lead us to analyse her roles and practical choices, wonder about the eventual dilemmas and conflicts of loyalties she had to face as a humanitarian activist, and deconstruct gender stereotypes of women humanitarians/nurses traditionally depicted as white/loving angels.

Blood is more than a biological fluid. From the earliest recorded history, mankind was fascinated by it and ascribed different meanings to this special substance. In the XXth century, the discovery of blood groups and of sodium citrate as an anti-coagulant agent for blood paved the way for its manipulation. As a consequence, blood lost its supposed magical properties and became an important therapeutic resource. Objective The objective of this communication is to trace the cultural and symbolic significance of blood through history. Materials and methods Narrative review of historical and contemporary sources. Results Symbolism around blood can be divided into several categories, as it has been considered: 1 - A life-sustaining substance with invigorating and rejuvenating properties. 2- A symbol of suffering and death (when blood is spilled out). 3- In several religions, a representation of the bond between God(s) and men. 4- A metaphor for guilt. 5- A representation of lineage, personal and collective identity. 6- A symbol of solidarity. 7- A sign of impurity. This communication examines each of these meanings on the basis of examples from cultural history and history of religions.

Lois Jovanovic (1947-2018) was a trailblazing and relentless clinical endocrinologist and researcher whose innovative approaches to diabetes and pregnancy changed the lives of thousands of women and their babies. Of her many accomplishments, she is best known for devising the diabetes and pregnancy protocols of intensive insulin delivery and glucose control that have made it possible for thousands of women with diabetes to deliver healthy babies and for pioneering the use of insulin analogues in pregnancy. Her research also paved the way for the development of the artificial pancreas. This biographical portrait describes her personal involvement with diabetes, her beginnings as a medical doctor, and highlights her main contributions to the field of diabetes.

Aims The general objective has been the historiographical investigation of the organotherapy of diabetes mellitus between 1906 and 1923 in its scientific, social and political dimensions, with special emphasis on the most relevant contributions of researchers and institutions and on the controversies generated on the priority of the "discovery" of antidiabetic hormone. Methods We have analyzed the experimental procedures and determination of biological parameters used by researchers during the investigated period (1906–1923): pancreatic ablation techniques, induction of acinar atrophy with preservation of pancreatic islets, preparation of pancreatic extracts (PE) with antidiabetic activity, clinical chemistry procedures (glycemia, glycosuria, ketonemia, ketonuria, etc.). The field investigation has included on-site and online visits to cities, towns, buildings, laboratories, universities, museums and research centers where the reported events took place, obtaining documents, photographic images, audiovisual recordings, as well as personal interviews complementary to the documentation consulted (primary sources, critical bibliography, reference works). The documentary archival sources have been classified according to theme, including those consulted in situ with those extracted online and digitized copies received mainly by email. Among the many archives contacted, those listed below have been most useful and have been consulted on site and on repeated visits: National Library of Medicine-Historical Archives (Bethesda, MD, USA); Archives, University of Toronto and Thomas Fisher Rare Books Library (Toronto, Ontario, Canada); Francis A. Main results and conclusions A) The European researchers Zülzer (Z Exp Path Ther 23:307–318, 1908) and Paulescu (CR Seances Soc Biol Fil 85:558, 1921) meet the requirements of the priority rule in the discovery of the antidiabetic hormone. B) Factors of socioeconomic and political nature related with the First World War and the inter-war period delayed the process of purification of the antidiabetic hormone in Europe. C) The Canadian scientist J. Collip, University of Alberta, temporarily assimilated to the University of Toronto, and the American chemist and researcher G. Walden, with the expert collaboration of Eli Lilly & Co., were the main authors of the purification process of the antidiabetic hormone. D) The scientific evidence, reflected in the heuristics of this research, allows to assert that the basic investigation carried out by the Department of Physiology of the University of Toronto, directed by the Scottish J. Macleod, in conjunction with the clinical research undertaken by the Department of Medicine of the University of Toronto (W. Campbell, A. Fletcher, D. Graham) made it possible in record time the successful treatment of patients with what was until then a deadly disease.

Aims The introduction of hormonal treatment in severe diabetes in 1922 represented a clinical and social impact similar to that of antibiotic therapy. In October 1923, the Assembly of the Karolinska Institute decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to the Canadian Frederick Grant Banting and the Scottish John James Rickard Macleod, researchers at the University of Toronto (UT), for "the discovery of insulin a year before". A few weeks later, European and American researchers protested the decision. The controversy remains to this day. Methods We have conducted a comprehensive review of primary and critical sources focused on the organotherapy of animal and human diabetes mellitus since 1889, when Oskar Minkowski demonstrated the induction of experimental diabetes by total pancreatectomy in the dog, until the spring of 1923, when the Nobel Foundation had already received all the nominations for the award in Physiology or Medicine. Results The in-depth analysis of all these sources revealed that Europe was the cradle of the discovery of the antidiabetic hormone. The discovery involved multiple research steps headed by a long list of key investigators, mainly European. Conclusion Marcel Eugène Émile Gley was the first to demonstrate the presence of the “antidiabetic principle” in extracts from “sclerosed” pancreas. The French physiologist pioneered the successful reduction of glycosuria and diabetic symptoms by the parenteral administration of pancreatic extracts to depancreatized dogs in experiments developed between 1890 and 1905, antedating insulin in two decades.

La donación de sangre en Europa, según la legislación vigente, se define como un acto voluntario y no remunerado, pero no siempre fue así. A principios del s. XX, las técnicas de transfusión sanguínea se encontraban en una fase muy incipiente, el número de donantes era escaso y convivían las donaciones altruistas con las remuneradas. Los dos conflictos bélicos mundiales y la guerra civil española supusieron un importante avance en las técnicas hemoterápicas y un aumento de las donaciones altruistas. Sin embargo, al finalizar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, éstas descendieron y en muchos países se volvió a la donación retribuida. La Cruz Roja, en su XVIII Conferencia Internacional (Estocolmo, 1948), adoptó una resolución pidiendo la ¿aplicación universal del principio de sangre gratuita¿. Los primeros Estados en excluir las donaciones remuneradas de sus sistemas sanitarios fueron Gran Bretaña (1946) y Francia (1952). Les siguieron Chipre (1977), España (1985) e Italia, Portugal, Grecia y Estonia en la década de 1990. El objetivo de esta comunicación es comparar la evolución legislativa referente a la transfusión y donación de sangre en España e Italia entre 1930 y 1990. En 1939, según la Orden del 18 de diciembre, se reguló por primera vez en España la creación de un servicio público de hematología y hemoterapia, que asumió la responsabilidad de implantar los servicios de transfusión por todo el país y organizar los centros de suministro de sangre. Leyes posteriores distinguieron entre ¿donantes profesionales¿ y ¿voluntarios¿, establecieron los distintos límites de extracciones para ambos y fijaron el precio de la sangre. En la década de 1960 nacieron las llamadas ¿Hermandades de Donantes de Sangre de la Seguridad Social¿, que fomentaban la hemodonación altruista y que en 1978 fueron aglutinadas bajo una estructura nacional. Aún así, la donación remunerada de sangre no fue prohibida por ley hasta 1985 con el Real Decreto 1945/1985, que estableció la creación del Plan Nacional de Hemoterapia. En Italia, la donación da sangre comenzó como un acto voluntario, gracias a la creación en 1926 de la Associazione Volontari Italiani del Sangue (AVIS). Fue suprimida en 1937, durante el régimen fascista, que estableció la figura del dador de sangre, imponiendo baremos de pago y normas generalizadas. No fue hasta 1950 cuando la nueva República reconoció el estatuto de AVIS con la Ley nº 49. La Ley nº 592 de 1967 reguló la extracción, almacenamiento y distribución de sangre en toda Italia. En 1990, el Estado italiano promulgó la Ley nº 107 sobre la gratuidad de la donación, que hasta entonces sólo había sido regulada por leyes regionales. En los años 90, las legislaciones de ambos países integraron las directivas de las OMS, el Consejo de Europa y la Unión Europea relativas a la donación y transfusión. Este estudio comparado entre la evolución histórica de las jurisdicciones española e italiana sobre la sangre pone de manifiesto interesantes similitudes, pero también claras divergencias, ligadas a los acontecimientos históricos y políticos de las dos naciones.

En un contexto marcado por una situación de pandemia por COVID-19 se ha reflexionado mucho sobre el modelo actual de las empresas, donde su eje principal ha sido la generación de ingresos a su máximo nivel y la acumulación de capital como el indicador principal de éxito, muchas veces, poniendo en riesgo el medio ambiente, la dignidad de las personas y el entorno que les rodea; en fin, arriesgando la sostenibilidad de la vida. Ante esta situación es importante reflexionar sobre el actual modelo no sólo a nivel micro sino también macro, lo que significa tomar en cuenta aspectos como las políticas públicas y las relaciones que se establecen en las cadenas de valor en los diferentes rubros productivos. El modelo de economía social, solidaria y colaborativa propone un nuevo modelo de empresa, siempre basada en la eficiencia, productividad y sostenibilidad financiera, pero con un elemento diferenciador: poner en el centro de sus decisiones a las personas. Muchas experiencias en América Latina y otros países del mundo nos muestran que es posible, especialmente, porque esto puede contribuir a la construcción de un nuevo modelo de desarrollo sostenible. En este análisis se presentarán las características principales que definen esta propuesta, no sólo a través de los planteamientos teóricos existentes, sino también a través de las experiencias latinoamericanas que han mostrado resultados positivos, a nivel de las actividades productivas y también del entorno que les rodea. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo difundir los principales hallazgos de la investigación desarrollada por el equipo de académicos del Círculo de Investigación de Innovación y Emprendimiento del departamento de Administración de Empresas de la UCA. En ésta, se pone de manifiesto principalmente el estado crítico en el que se encuentra la micro y pequeña empresa salvadoreña, estado causado por la pandemia por COVID19; contexto el cual se muestra la fragilidad del sistema económico de un país polarizado, con una creciente brecha de pobreza, desigualdad y difícil acceso a oportunidades para los grupos más desfavorecidos y vulnerables. In 1905, Fritz Schaudinn and Erich Hoffmann discovered that the causative agent of syphilis was the bacterium Treponema pallidum. In 1906, based on Jules Bordet's description of the complement fixation reaction, August von Wassermann, Albert Neisser and Carl Bruck introduced the first diagnostic test for syphilis. It soon became clear that the so-called Wassermann reaction produced too many false positives (poor specificity). Thus, the League of Nations Health Organization recommended in 1928 that serodiagnosis of syphilis should be confirmed by at least two different methods. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), a time when syphilis was highly prevalent and penicillin had not yet been recognized as a therapeutic agent, although salvarsan was, it was essential to screen the blood of donors for syphilis. Transfusion-transmitted syphilis was first described by John A. Fordyce in 1915. In the 1930s, attempts had been made to prevent infection by adding mercuric cyanide to blood, but this method was abandoned because of its toxicity. It was also observed that pathogen¿s infectivity was reduced in preserved citrated blood after several days. The purpose of this paper is to offer a first approach to the sources for studying the development of syphilis serology in blood transfusions during the 1930s in the international forums, and the practice of these serological tests during the Spanish Civil War.
