We analyse continuum and molecular emission, observed with ALMA, from the dust-enshrouded intermediate-mass AGB star OH 30.1 -0.7. We find a secondary peak in the continuum maps, "feature B", separated by 4.6" from the AGB star, which corresponds to a projected separation of $1.8 \times 10^4$ au, placing a lower limit on the physical separation. This feature is most likely composed of cold dust and is likely to be ejecta associated with the AGB star, though we cannot rule out that it is a background object. The molecular emission we detect includes lines of CO, SiS, CS, SO$_2$, NS, NaCl, and KCl. We find that the NS emission is off centre and arranged along an axis perpendicular to the direction of feature B, indicative of a UV-emitting binary companion (e.g. a G-type main sequence star or hotter), perhaps on an eccentric orbit, contributing to its formation. However, the NaCl and KCl emission constrain the nature of that companion to not be hotter than a late B-type main sequence star. We find relatively warm emission arising from the inner wind and detect several vibrationally excited lines of SiS (3 = 1), NaCl (up to 3 = 4) and KCl (up to 3 = 2), and emission from low energy levels in the mid to outer envelope, as traced by SO$_2$. The CO emission is abruptly truncated around 3.5" or 14,000 au from the continuum peak, suggesting that mass loss at a high rate may have commenced as little as 2800 years ago., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Mass loss through a stellar wind is an important physical process that steers the evolution of massive stars and controls the properties of their end-of-life products, such as the supernova type and the mass of compact remnants. For an accurate mass loss determination, the inhomogeneities in the wind, known as clumping, needs to be taking into account. We aim to improve empirical estimates of mass loss and wind clumping for hot main-sequence massive stars, study the dependence of both properties on the metallicity, and compare the theoretical predictions to our findings. We analyzed the optical and UV spectra of 13 O-type stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud galaxy, which has a metallicity of $\sim 0.2\,Z_\odot$. We quantified the stellar atmosphere, outflow, and wind-clumping properties. To probe the role of metallicity, we compared our findings to studies of Galactic and Large Magellanic Cloud samples that were analyzed with similar methods. We find significant variations in the wind-clumping properties of the target stars, with clumping starting at flow velocities $0.01 - 0.23$ of the terminal wind velocity and reaching clumping factors $f_{\rm cl} = 2 - 30$. In the luminosity ($\log L / L_{\odot} = 5.0 - 6.0$) and metallicity ($Z/Z_{\odot} = 0.2 - 1$) range we considered, we find that the scaling of the mass loss $\dot{M}$ with metallicity $Z$ varies with luminosity. At $\log L/L_{\odot} = 5.75$, we find $\dot{M} \propto Z^m$ with $m = 1.02 \pm 0.30$, in agreement with pioneering work in the field. For lower luminosities, however, we obtain a significantly steeper scaling of $m > 2$. The monotonically decreasing $m(L)$ behavior adds a complexity to the functional description of the mass-loss rate of hot massive stars. Context. Current implementations of mass loss for hot, massive stars in stellar evolution models include a sharp increase in mass loss when blue supergiants become cooler than Teff 20-22kK. This drastic mass-loss jump has been motivated by the potential presence of a so-called bistability ionisation effect, which may occur for line-driven winds in this temperature region due to recombination of important line-driving ions. Aims. We perform quantitative spectroscopy using UV (ULLYSES program) and optical (XShootU collaboration) data for 17 OB-supergiant stars in the LMC (covering the range Teff 14-32kK), deriving absolute constraints on global stellar, wind, and clumping parameters. We examine whether there are any empirical signs of a mass-loss jump in the investigated region, and we study the clumped nature of the wind. Methods. We use a combination of the model atmosphere code fastwind and the genetic algorithm code Kiwi-GA to fit synthetic spectra of a multitude of diagnostic spectral lines in the optical and UV. Results. We find no signs of any upward mass loss jump anywhere in the examined region. Standard theoretical comparison models, which include a strong bistability jump thus severely over predict the empirical mass-loss rates on the cool side of the predicted jump. Additionally, we find that on average about 40% of the total wind mass seems to reside in the diluted medium in between dense clumps. Conclusions. Our derived mass-loss rates suggest that for applications like stellar evolution one should not include a drastic bistability jump in mass loss for stars in the temperature and luminosity region investigated here. The derived high values of interclump density further suggest that the common assumption of an effectively void interclump medium (applied in the vast majority of spectroscopic studies of hot star winds) is not generally valid in this parameter regime.

Massive stars are predominantly born in stellar associations or clusters. Their radiation fields, stellar winds, and supernovae strongly impact their local environment. In the first few million years of a cluster's life, massive stars are dynamically ejected running away from the cluster at high speed. However, the production rate of dynamically ejected runaways is poorly constrained. Here we report on a sample of 55 massive runaway stars ejected from the young cluster R136 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Astrometric analysis with Gaia reveals two channels of dynamically ejected runaways. The first channel ejects massive stars in all directions and is consistent with dynamical interactions during and after the birth of R136. The second channel launches stars in a preferred direction and may be related to a cluster interaction. We find that 23-33% of the most luminous stars initially born in R136 are runaways. Model predictions have significantly underestimated the dynamical escape fraction of massive stars. Triple stars are prevalent within the population of observed stars. Their evolution, compared to binaries, is notably more complex, influenced by unique dynamical, tidal, and mass transfer processes. Understanding these phenomena is essential for a comprehensive insight into multistar evolution and the formation of energetic transients, including gravitational-wave mergers. Our study probes the evolution of triple star systems when the tertiary fills its Roche lobe and transfers mass to the inner binary, potentially forming GW sources with distinct properties. We develop an analytical model for hierarchical triples undergoing stable mass transfer from the tertiary. Using population synthesis simulations, we investigate triples with a Roche-lobe filling tertiary and an inner binary black hole. These systems originate from inner binaries undergoing chemically homogeneous evolution. Our analysis includes populations with metallicities of Z=0.005 and Z=0.0005, focusing on primary components with initial masses of 20 to 100 M_sun, and inner and outer orbital separations up to 40 R_sun and 10^5 R_sun, respectively. Our results show that mass transfer predominantly leads to orbital shrinkage of the inner binary, non-zero eccentricities, and expansion of the outer orbit. Among systems with CHE inner binaries, 9.5% result in mass transfer from the tertiary onto an inner BBH. We predict high formation efficiency of GW mergers, ranging from 85.1% to 100% at Z=0.005 and 100% at Z=0.0005, with short delay times. Local merger rates are projected to be between 0.69 to 1.74 Gpc^-3 yr^-1. A fraction of these BBH mergers, entering the LISA and aLIGO frequency bands, may still be accreting gas, potentially producing a strong electromagnetic counterpart. High-resolution observations reveal that the outflows of evolved low- and intermediate-mass stars harbour complex morphological structures that are linked to the presence of one or multiple companions. Hydrodynamical simulations provide a way to study the impact of a companion on the shaping of the AGB outflow. Using smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations of a mass losing AGB star with a binary companion, we study the impact of including HI atomic line cooling on the flow morphology and on the properties of accretion disks that form around the companion. We perform high-resolution 3D SPH simulations of the interaction of a solar-mass companion with the outflow of an AGB star using different wind velocities and eccentricities. We compare the models properties computed with and without the inclusion of HI cooling. The inclusion of HI cooling produces a large decrease in the temperature up to one order of magnitude in the region closely surrounding the companion star. As a consequence, morphological irregularities and relatively energetic outflows that were obtained without HI cooling no longer appear. In case of an eccentric orbit and low wind velocity, the morphologies are still highly asymmetric, but the same structures recur at every orbital period, making the morphology more regular. Flared accretion disks with a (sub)-Keplerian velocity profile form around the companion in all models, provided the accretion radius is small enough. The disks have radial sizes ranging from about 0.4 to 0.9 au. For the considered wind velocities, mass accretion onto the companion is up to 2 times higher than predicted by the BHL rate, and ranges between 0.04-0.21 times the AGB wind mass loss rate. The outcome of the formation of massive stars is an important anchor point in their evolution. It provides insight into the physics of the assembly process, and sets the conditions for stellar evolution. We characterize a population of 18 highly reddened O4.5 to B9 stars in the very young massive star-forming region M17. Their properties allow us to identify the empirical location of the ZAMS, and rotation and mass-loss rate of stars there. We performed quantitative spectroscopic modeling of VLT/X-shooter spectra using NLTE atmosphere code Fastwind and fitting approach Kiwi-GA. The observed SEDs were used to determine the line-of-sight extinction. From a comparison of their positions in the HRD with MIST evolutionary tracks, we inferred the stellar masses and ages. We find an age of $0.4_{-0.2}^{+0.6}$ Myr for our sample, however we also identify a strong relation between the age and the mass of the stars. The extinction towards the sources ranges from $A_V = 3.6$ to 10.6. Stars more massive than 10 M$_{\odot}$ have reached the ZAMS. Their projected ZAMS spin rate distribution extends to 0.3 of the critical velocity; their mass-loss rates agree with those of other main-sequence OB stars. Stars with a mass in the range $3 < M/$M$_{\odot} < 7$ are still on the pre-main sequence (PMS). Evolving their $v \sin i$ to the ZAMS yields values up to $\sim 0.6 v_{\rm crit}$. For PMS stars without disks, we find tentative mass-loss rates up to $10^{-8.5}\,$M$_{\odot}$\,yr$^{-1}$. We constrain the empirical location of the ZAMS for massive ($10 < M/$M$_{\odot} < 50$) stars. The ZAMS rotation rates for intermediate-mass stars are twice as high as for massive stars, suggesting that the angular momentum gain processes differ between the two groups. Significant progress has been made toward understanding the formation of massive ($M > 8~$M$_{\odot}$) binaries in close orbits. For example, the detection of a very low velocity dispersion among the massive stars in the young region M17 and the measurement of a positive trend of velocity dispersion with age in Galactic clusters. The velocity dispersion observed in M17 could be explained either by the lack of binaries among the stars in this region or by larger binary separations than typically observed, but with a binary fraction similar to other young Galactic clusters. The latter implies that over time, the binary components migrate toward each other. We aim to determine the origin of the strikingly low velocity dispersion by determining the observed and intrinsic binary fraction of massive stars in M17 through multi-epoch spectroscopy. We performed a multi-epoch spectroscopic survey consisting of three epochs separated by days and months. We determine the radial velocity of each star at each epoch by fitting the stellar absorption profiles. We determine an observed binary fraction of 27% and an intrinsic binary fraction of 87%, consistent with that of other Galactic clusters. We conclude that the low velocity dispersion is due to a large separation among the young massive binaries in M17. Our result is in agreement with a migration scenario in which massive stars are born in binaries or higher order systems at large separation and harden within the first million years of evolution. Such an inward migration may either be driven by interaction with a remnant accretion disk, with other young stellar objects present in the system or by dynamical interactions within the cluster. Binary interactions have been proposed to explain a variety of circumstellar structures seen around evolved stars, including asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and planetary nebulae. Studies resolving the circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars have revealed spirals, discs and bipolar outflows, with shaping attributed to interactions with a companion. For the first time, we have used a combined chemical and dynamical analysis to reveal a highly eccentric and long-period orbit for W Aquilae, a binary system containing an AGB star and a main sequence companion. Our results are based on anisotropic SiN emission, the first detections of NS and SiC towards an S-type star, and density structures observed in the CO emission. These features are all interpreted as having formed during periastron interactions. Surveys in the Milky Way and Large Magellanic Cloud revealed that the majority of massive stars will interact with companions during their lives. However, knowledge of the binary properties of massive stars at low metallicity, which approaches the conditions of the Early Universe, remains sparse. We present the Binarity at LOw Metallicity (BLOeM) campaign - an ESO large programme designed to obtain 25 epochs of spectroscopy for 929 massive stars in the SMC - the lowest metallicity conditions in which multiplicity is probed to date (Z = 0.2 Zsun). BLOeM will provide (i) the binary fraction, (ii) the orbital configurations of systems with periods P < 3 yr, (iii) dormant OB+BH binaries, and (iv) a legacy database of physical parameters of massive stars at low metallicity. The stars are observed with the LR02 setup of the giraffe instrument of the Very Large Telescope (3960-4570A, resolving power R=6200; typical signal-to-noise ratio S/N=70-100). This paper utilises the first 9 epochs obtained over a three-month time. We describe the survey and data reduction, perform a spectral classification of the stacked spectra, and construct a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram of the sample via spectral-type and photometric calibrations. The sample covers spectral types from O4 to F5, spanning the effective temperature and luminosity ranges 6.5

The interplay between T Tauri stars and their circumstellar disks, and how this impacts the onset of planet formation has yet to be established. We studied a seemingly old T Tauri star, PDS 111, and its disk. We analyzed optical, infrared, and sub-millimeter observations obtained with VLT/X-shooter, Mercator/HERMES, TESS, VLT/SPHERE, and ALMA, providing a new view on PDS 111 and its protoplanetary disk. The multi-epoch spectroscopy yields photospheric lines to classify the star, and emission lines to study variability in the hot inner disk and to determine the mass-accretion rate. The SPHERE and ALMA observations are used to characterize the dust distribution of the small and large grains, respectively. PDS 111 is a weak-line T Tauri star with spectral type G2, exhibits strong H$\alpha$ variability and with a low mass-accretion rate of $1-5\times10^{-10}$\,M$_{\odot}$\,yr$^{-1}$. We measured an age of the system of 15.9$^{+1.7}_{-3.7}$ Myr using pre-main sequence tracks. The SPHERE observations show a strongly flaring disk with an asymmetric substructure. The ALMA observations reveal a 30 au cavity in the dust continuum emission with a low contrast asymmetry in the South-West of the disk and a dust disk mass of 45.8\,$M_\oplus$. The $^{12}$CO radial extension is at least three times larger than that of the dust emission. Although the measured age is younger than suggested in literature, PDS 111 still seems relatively old; this provides insight into disk properties at an advanced stage of pre-main sequence evolution. The characteristics of this disk are very similar to its younger counterparts: strongly flaring, an average disk mass, a typical radial extent of the disk gas and dust, and the presence of common substructures. This suggests that disk evolution has not significantly changed the disk properties. Using the medium resolution spectrograph X-shooter, spectra of 235 OB and Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in sub-solar metallicity environments have been secured. [...]This second paper focuses on the optical observations of 232 Magellanic Clouds targets. It describes the uniform reduction of the UVB (300 - 560 nm) and VIS (550 - 1020 nm) XShootU data as well as the preparation of advanced data products [...] . The data reduction of the raw data is based on the ESO CPL X-shooter pipeline. We paid particular attention to the determination of the response curves [...] We implemented slit-loss correction, absolute flux calibration, (semi-)automatic rectification to the continuum, and a correction for telluric lines. The spectra of individual epochs were corrected for the barycentric motion, re-sampled and co-added, and the spectra from the two arms were merged into a single flux calibrated spectrum covering the entire optical range with maximum signal-to-noise ratio. In this paper, we explore the significant, non-linear impact that stellar winds have on H ii regions. We perform a parameter study using three-dimensional radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations of wind and ultraviolet radiation feedback from a 35 Msun star formed self-consistently in a turbulent, self-gravitating cloud, similar to the Orion Nebula (M42) and its main ionizing source Theta 1 Ori C. Stellar winds suppress early radiative feedback by trapping ionizing radiation in the shell around the wind bubble. Rapid breakouts of warm photoionized gas ('champagne flows') still occur if the star forms close to the edge of the cloud. The impact of wind bubbles can be enhanced if we detect and remove numerical overcooling caused by shocks crossing grid cells. However, the majority of the energy in the wind bubble is still lost to turbulent mixing between the wind bubble and the gas around it. These results begin to converge if the spatial resolution at the wind bubble interface is increased by refining the grid on pressure gradients. Wind bubbles form a thin chimney close to the star, which then expands outwards as an extended plume once the wind bubble breaks out of the dense core the star formed in, allowing them to expand faster than a spherical wind bubble. We also find wind bubbles mixing completely with the photoionized gas when the H ii region breaks out of the cloud as a champagne flow, a process we term 'hot champagne'., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, published in MNRAS. From Nov. 2019 to May 2020, the red supergiant star Betelgeuse experienced an unprecedented drop of brightness in the visible domain called the great dimming event. Large atmospheric dust clouds and large photospheric convective features are suspected to be responsible for it. To better understand the dimming event, we used mid-infrared long-baseline spectro-interferometric measurements of Betelgeuse taken with the VLTI/MATISSE instrument before (Dec. 2018), during (Feb. 2020), and after (Dec. 2020) the GDE. We present data in the 3.98 to 4.15\,$\mu$m range to cover SiO spectral features molecules as well as adjacent continuum. We have employed geometrical models, image reconstruction, as well as radiative transfer models to monitor the spatial distribution of SiO over the stellar surface. We find a strongly in-homogeneous spatial distribution of SiO that appears to be looking very different between our observing epochs, indicative of a vigorous activity in the stellar atmosphere. The contrast of our images is small in the pseudo-continuum for all epochs, implying that our MATISSE observations support both cold spot and dust cloud model.

The dusty winds of cool evolved stars are a major contributor of the newly synthesised material enriching the Galaxy and future generations of stars. However, the details of the physics and chemistry behind dust formation and wind launching have yet to be pinpointed. Recent spatially resolved observations show the importance of gaining a more comprehensive view of the circumstellar chemistry, but a comparative study of the intricate interplay between chemistry and physics is still difficult because observational details such as frequencies and angular resolutions are rarely comparable. Aiming to overcome these deficiencies, ATOMIUM is an ALMA Large Programme to study the physics and chemistry of the circumstellar envelopes of a diverse set of oxygen-rich evolved stars under homogeneous observing conditions at three angular resolutions between ~0.02"-1.4". Here we summarize the molecular inventory of these sources, and the correlations between stellar parameters and molecular content. Seventeen oxygen-rich or S-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and red supergiant (RSG) stars have been observed in several tunings with ALMA Band 6, targeting a range of molecules to probe the circumstellar envelope and especially the chemistry of dust formation close to the star. We systematically assigned the molecular carriers of the spectral lines and measured their spectroscopic parameters and the angular extent of the emission of each line from integrated intensity maps. Across the ATOMIUM sample, we detect 291 transitions of 24 different molecules and their isotopologues. This includes several first detections in oxygen-rich AGB/RSG stars: PO v=1, SO2 v1=1 and v2=2, and several high energy H2O transitions. The fraction of massive stars in young stellar clusters is of importance as they are the dominant sources of both mechanical and radiative feedback, strongly influencing the thermal and dynamical state of their birth environments. It turns out that a significant fraction of massive stars escape from their parent cluster via dynamical interactions of single stars and/or multiple stellar systems. M 17 is the nearest giant H II region hosting a very young and massive cluster: NGC 6618. Our aim is to identify stars brighter than G < 21 mag that belong to NGC 6618, including the (massive) stars that may have escaped since its formation, and to determine the cluster distance and age. We identified 42 members of NGC 6618 of which eight have a spectral type of O, with a mean distance of 1675 pc and a transversal velocity dispersion of about 3 km/s , and a radial velocity dispersion of 6 km/s. Another ten O stars are associated with NGC 6618, but they cannot be classified as members due to poor astrometry or high extinction. We have also identified six O star runaways. The relative transverse velocity of these runaways ranges from 10 to 70 km/s and their kinematic age ranges from about 100 to 750 kyr. Given the already established young age of NGC 6618 (< 1 Myr), this implies that massive stars are being ejected from the cluster already directly after or during the cluster formation process. When constructing the initial mass function, one has to take into account the massive stars that have already escaped from the cluster, that is, about 30% of the O stars of the original population of NGC 6618. The trajectories of the O runaways can be traced back to the central 0.25 pc region of NGC 6618. The good agreement between the evolutionary and kinematic age of the runaways implies that the latter provides an independent way to estimate (a lower limit to) the age of the cluster., Comment: to be published in A&A

We present the first results of the eXtreme UV Environments (XUE) James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) program, that focuses on the characterization of planet forming disks in massive star forming regions. These regions are likely representative of the environment in which most planetary systems formed. Understanding the impact of environment on planet formation is critical in order to gain insights into the diversity of the observed exoplanet populations. XUE targets 15 disks in three areas of NGC 6357, which hosts numerous massive OB stars, among which some of the most massive stars in our Galaxy. Thanks to JWST we can, for the first time, study the effect of external irradiation on the inner ($< 10$ au), terrestrial-planet forming regions of proto-planetary disks. In this study, we report on the detection of abundant water, CO, CO$_2$, HCN and C$_2$H$_2$ in the inner few au of XUE 1, a highly irradiated disk in NGC 6357. In addition, small, partially crystalline silicate dust is present at the disk surface. The derived column densities, the oxygen-dominated gas-phase chemistry, and the presence of silicate dust are surprisingly similar to those found in inner disks located in nearby, relatively isolated low-mass star-forming regions. Our findings imply that the inner regions of highly irradiated disks can retain similar physical and chemical conditions as disks in low-mass star-forming regions, thus broadening the range of environments with similar conditions for inner disk rocky planet formation to the most extreme star-forming regions in our Galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. 20 pages, 7 figures

It is a challenge to study the formation process of massive stars: their formation time is short, they are few, often deeply embedded, and at relatively large distances. Our strategy is to study the outcome of the star formation process and to look for signatures remnant of the formation. We have access to a unique sample of (massive) pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in the giant HII region M17, showing a photosphere and circumstellar disk. The aim is to determine the variability properties of the hot gaseous disks to understand the physical origin of the emission lines and identify dominant physical processes in these disks. We have obtained multiple-epoch (4-5 epochs) VLT/X-shooter spectra of six young stars in M17 covering about a decade. Using stacked spectra we update the spectral classification and identify circumstellar features. With the temporal variance method (TVS) we determine the extent and amplitude of the spectral line variations. The double-peaked emission lines in the PMS stars with gaseous disks are used to determine peak-to-peak velocities, V/R-ratios and the radial velocity of the systems. We identify many disk features, under which a new detection of CO bandhead and CI emission. In three of the stars we detect spectral variability, mainly in lines originating in the circumstellar disk, in a velocity range up to 320 km/s. In two PMS stars the ratio between the blue and red peaks shows a correlation with the peak-to-peak velocity, possibly explained by a spiral-arm structure in the disk. The PMS stars with variability are at similar positions in the HRD but show significant differences in disk lines and variability. The extent and timescale of the variability differs for each star and per line (sets). The origin of initial rotation rates of stars, and how a star's surface rotational velocity changes during the evolution, either by internal angular momentum transport or due to interactions with a binary companion, remain open questions in stellar astrophysics. Here, we aim to derive the physical parameters and study the distribution of (projected) rotational velocities of B-type stars in the 35 Myr-old, massive cluster NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. NGC 330 is in an age range where the number of post-interaction binaries is predicted to be high near the cluster turnoff (TO). We develop a simultaneous photometric and spectroscopic grid-fitting method adjusting atmosphere models on multi-band Hubble Space Telescope photometry and Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer spectroscopy. This allows us to homogeneously constrain the physical parameters of over 250 B and Be stars, brighter than mF814W = 18.8 mag. The rotational velocities of Be stars in NGC 330 are significantly higher than the ones of B stars. The rotational velocities vary as a function of the star's position in the color-magnitude diagram, qualitatively following predictions of binary population synthesis. A comparison to younger clusters shows that stars in NGC 330 rotate more rapidly on average. The rotational velocities of the 35 Myr old population in NGC 330 quantitatively agree with predictions for a stellar population that underwent significant binary interactions: the bulk of the B stars could be single stars or primaries in pre-interaction binaries. The rapidly spinning Be stars could be mass and angular momentum gainers in previous interactions, while those Be stars close to the TO may be spun-up single stars. The slowly rotating, apparently single stars above the TO could be merger products. Massive stars (~8-25Msun) stripped of their hydrogen-rich envelopes via binary interaction are thought to be the main progenitors for merging neutron stars and stripped-envelope supernovae. We recently presented the discovery of the first set of such stripped stars in a companion paper. Here, we fit the spectra of ten stars with new atmosphere models in order to constrain their stellar properties precisely. We find that the stellar properties align well with the theoretical expectations from binary evolution models for helium-core burning envelope-stripped stars. The fits confirm that the stars have high effective temperatures (Teff~50-100kK), high surface gravities (log g ~5), and hydrogen-poor/helium-rich surfaces (X(H, surf)~0-0.4) while showing for the first time a range of bolometric luminosities (10^3-10^5 Lsun), small radii (~0.5-1Rsun), and low Eddington factors (Gamma_e~0.006-0.4). Using these properties, we derive intermediate current masses (~1-8Msun), which suggest that their progenitors were massive stars (~5-25Msun) and that a subset will reach core-collapse, leaving behind neutron stars or black holes. Using the model fits, we also estimate the emission rates of ionizing photons for these stars, which agree well with previous model expectations. Further, by computing models for a range of mass-loss rates, we find that the stellar winds are weaker than predicted by any existing scheme (Mdot(wind)<~ 1e-9 Msun/yr). The properties of this first sample of intermediate mass helium stars suggest they both contain progenitors of type Ib and IIb supernovae, and provide important benchmarks for binary evolution and population synthesis models., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. So far, stellar population studies have mainly focused on the evolution of single and binary stars. Recent observations show that triple and higher order multiple star systems are common, especially among massive stars. Introducing three-body dynamical effects can influence the evolution of an individual stellar system and hence affect the predicted rates of astrophysical sources that are a product of stellar evolution. We aim to constrain the main evolutionary pathways of massive hierarchical triple star systems and to quantify the effect of the third star on the evolution of the system. We model the massive triple star population by performing simulations of triple star evolution with the TRES code, which combines stellar evolution with secular evolution of triple systems, and explore how robust the predictions of these simulations are under variations of uncertain initial conditions. We find that interactions are common among massive triple stars. The majority of systems (65-77\%) experience a phase of mass transfer in the inner binary, often with an unevolved donor star. This differs significantly from isolated binary evolution, where mass transfer is less frequent (52.3\% instead of 67\% for our fiducial model) and the donors are typically post-main sequence stars. Initial constraints for dynamical stability as well as eccentricity oscillations driven by the third body facilitate the occurrence of interactions, for instance mass transfer. The requirement of dynamical stability at formation places quite stringent constraints on allowed orbital properties, reducing uncertainties in triple evolution that resort from these initial conditions. Ignoring three-body dynamics during evolution of non-interacting triples leads to triple compact-object systems with stronger eccentricity oscillations and thereby likely over-predicts the merger rate of compact objects in such systems., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures

Observations of individual massive stars, super-luminous supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, and gravitational-wave events involving spectacular black-hole mergers, indicate that the low-metallicity Universe is fundamentally different from our own Galaxy. Many transient phenomena will remain enigmatic until we achieve a firm understanding of the physics and evolution of massive stars at low metallicity (Z). The Hubble Space Telescope has devoted 500 orbits to observe 250 massive stars at low Z in the ultraviolet (UV) with the COS and STIS spectrographs under the ULLYSES program. The complementary ``X-Shooting ULLYSES'' (XShootU) project provides enhanced legacy value with high-quality optical and near-infrared spectra obtained with the wide-wavelength coverage X-shooter spectrograph at ESO's Very Large Telescope. We present an overview of the XShootU project, showing that combining ULLYSES UV and XShootU optical spectra is critical for the uniform determination of stellar parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity, luminosity, and abundances, as well as wind properties such as mass-loss rates in function of Z. As uncertainties in stellar and wind parameters percolate into many adjacent areas of Astrophysics, the data and modelling of the XShootU project is expected to be a game-changer for our physical understanding of massive stars at low Z. Recently much progress has been made in probing the embedded stages of massive star formation, pointing to formation scenarios akin to a scaled up version of low-mass star formation. However, the latest stages of massive star formation have rarely been observed. Using 1st and 2nd overtone CO bandhead emission and near- to mid-infrared photometry we aim to characterize the remnant formation disks around 5 unique pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars with masses $6-12~\rm M_{\odot}$, that have constrained stellar parameters thanks to their detectable photospheres. We seek to understand this emission and the disks it originates from in the context of the evolutionary stage of the studied sources. We use an analytic LTE disk model to fit the CO bandhead and the dust emission, found to originate in different disk regions. For the first time we modeled the 2nd overtone emission. Furthermore, we fit continuum normalized bandheads and show the importance of this in constraining the emission region. We also include $^{13}\rm CO$ in our models as an additional probe of the young nature of the studied objects. We find that the CO emission originates in a narrow region close to the star (<1 AU) and under very similar disk conditions (temperatures and densities) for the different objects. This is consistent with previous modeling of this emission in a diverse range of young stellar objects. We discuss these results in the context of the positions of these PMS stars in the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram and the CO emission's association with early age and high accretion rates in (massive) young stellar objects. We conclude that, considering their mass range and for the fact that their photospheres are detected, the M17 PMS stars are observed in a relatively early formation stage. They are therefore excellent candidates for longer wavelength studies to further constrain the end stages of massive star formation., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

The winds of massive stars have an impact on stellar evolution and on the surrounding medium. The maximum speed reached by these outflows, the terminal wind speed, is a global wind parameter and an essential input for models of stellar atmospheres and feedback. With the arrival of the ULLYSES programme, a legacy UV spectroscopic survey with HST, we have the opportunity to quantify the wind speeds of massive stars at sub-solar metallicity (in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, 0.5Z and 0.2Z) at an unprecedented scale. We empirically quantify the wind speeds of a large sample of OB stars, including supergiants, giants, and dwarfs at sub-solar metallicity. Using these measurements, we investigate trends of terminal wind speed with a number of fundamental stellar parameters, namely effective temperature, metallicity, and surface escape velocity. We empirically determined the terminal wind speed for a sample of 149 OB stars in the Magellanic Clouds either by directly measuring the maximum velocity shift of the absorption component of the Civ 1548-1550 line profile, or by fitting synthetic spectra produced using the Sobolev with exact integration method. Stellar parameters were either collected from the literature, obtained using spectral-type calibrations, or predicted from evolutionary models. We find strong trends of terminal wind speed with effective temperature and surface escape speed when the wind is strong enough to cause a saturated P Cygni profile in Civ 1548-1550. We find evidence for a metallicity dependence on the terminal wind speed proportional to Z^0.22+-0.03 when we compared our results to previous Galactic studies. Our results suggest that effective temperature rather than surface escape speed should be used as a straightforward empirical prediction of terminal wind speed and that the observed metallicity dependence is steeper than suggested by earlier works., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, 8 tables. The cluster R136 in the giant star-forming region 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) offers a unique opportunity to resolve a stellar population in a starburst-like environment. We obtain the near-infrared to ultraviolet extinction towards 50 stars in the core of R136, employing the `extinction without standards' method. To assure good fits over the full wavelength range, we combine and modify existing extinction laws. We detect a strong spatial gradient in the extinction properties across the core of R136, coinciding with a gradient in density of cold gas that is part of a molecular cloud lying northeast of the cluster. In line with previous measurements of R136 and the 30 Doradus region, we obtain a high total-to-relative extinction ($R_V = 4.38 \pm 0.87$). However, the high values of $R_V$ are accompanied by relatively strong extinction in the ultraviolet, contrary to what is observed for Galactic sightlines. The relatively strong ultraviolet extinction suggests that the properties of the dust towards R136 differ from those in the Milky Way. For $R_{V} \sim 4.4$, about three times fewer ultraviolet photons can escape from the ambient dust environment relative to the canonical Galactic value of $R_{V} \sim 3.1$ at the same $A_{V}$. Therefore, if dust in the R136 star-bursting environment is characteristic for cosmologically distant star-bursting regions, the escape fraction of ultraviolet photons from such regions is overestimated by a factor of three relative to the standard Milky Way assumption for the total-to-selective extinction. Furthermore, a comparison with average curves tailored to other regions of the LMC shows that large differences in ultraviolet extinction exist within this galaxy. The 'Great Dimming' of the prototypical red supergiant Betelgeuse, which occurred between December 2019 and April 2020, gives us unprecedented insight into the processes occurring on the stellar surface and in the inner wind of this type of star. In particular it may bring further understanding of their dust nucleation and mass loss processes. Here, we present and analyse VLTI/MATISSE observations in the N-band (8 - 13 $\mu$m) taken near the brightness minimum in order to assess the status of the dusty circumstellar environment. We explore the compatibility of a dust clump obscuring the star with our mid-infrared interferometric observations using continuum 3D radiative transfer modelling, and probe the effect of adding multiple clumps close to the star on the observables. We also test the viability of a large cool spot on the stellar surface without dust present in the ambient medium. Using the visibility data, we derive a uniform disk diameter of 59.02 $\pm$ 0.64 mas in the spectral range 8 to 8.75 $\mu$m. We find that both the dust clump and the cool spot models are compatible with the data. Further to this, we note that the extinction and emission of our localised dust clump in the line of sight of the star, directly compensate each other making the clump undetectable in the spectral energy distribution and visibilities. The lack of infrared brightening during the 'Great Dimming' therefore does not exclude extinction due to a dust clump as one of the possible mechanisms. The visibilities can be reproduced by a spherical wind with dust condensing at 13 stellar radii and a dust mass-loss rate of (2.1 - 4.9) $\times$ 10$^{-10}$ $\mathit{M}_{\odot} {\rm yr}^{-1}$, however, in order to reproduce the complexity of the observed closure phases, additional surface features or dust clumps would be needed., Comment: 13 Pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Stars strongly impact their environment, and shape structures on all scales throughout the universe, in a process known as ``feedback''. Due to the complexity of both stellar evolution and the physics of larger astrophysical structures, there remain many unanswered questions about how feedback operates, and what we can learn about stars by studying their imprint on the wider universe. The young massive-star-forming region M17 contains optically visible massive pre-main-sequence stars that are surrounded by circumstellar disks. Such disks are expected to disappear when these stars reach the main sequence. The physical and dynamical structure of these remnant disks are poorly constrained, especially the inner regions where accretion, photo-evaporation, and companion formation and migration may be ongoing. We aim to constrain the physical properties of the inner parts of the circumstellar disks of massive young stellar objects B243 (6 Msun) and B331 (12 Msun), two systems for which the central star has been detected and characterized previously despite strong dust extinction. Two-dimensional radiation thermo-chemical modelling with ProDiMo of double-peaked hydrogen lines of the Paschen and Brackett series observed with X-shooter was used to probe the properties of the inner disks. Additionally, the dust structure was studied by fitting the optical and near-infrared spectral energy distribution. B243 features a hot gaseous inner disk with dust at the sublimation radius at 3 AU. The disk appears truncated at roughly 6.5 AU; a cool outer disk of gas and dust may be present, but it cannot be detected with our data. B331 also has a hot gaseous inner disk. A gap separates the inner disk from a colder dusty outer disk starting at up to 100 AU. In both sources the inner disk extends to almost the stellar surface. Chemistry is essential for the ionization of hydrogen in these disks. The lack of a gap between the central objects and these disks suggests that they accrete through boundary-layer accretion. This would exclude the stars having a strong magnetic field. Their structures suggest that both disks are transitional in nature, that is to say they are in the process of being cleared, either through boundary-layer accretion, photo-evaporation, or through companion activity., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures. Aims. Through the ATOMIUM project, based on an ALMA large program, we aim to present a consistent view of a sample of 17 nearby cool evolved stars (Aymptotic Giant Branch and red supergiant stars). Methods. Here we present VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL polarimetric maps obtained in the visible of 14 out of the 17 ATOMIUM sources. They were obtained contemporaneously with the ALMA high spatial resolution data. To help interpret the polarized signal, we produced synthetic maps of light scattering by dust, through 3D radiative transfer simulations with the RADMC3D code. Results. The degree of linear polarization (DoLP) observed by ZIMPOL spreads across several optical filters. We infer that it primarily probes dust located just outside of the point spread function, and in or near the plane of the sky, with a total optical depth close to unity in the line of sight, representing only a fraction of the total circumstellar dust. The maximum DoLP ranges from 0.03-0.38 depending on the source, fractions that can be reproduced by our 3D pilot models for grains composed of common dust species. The spatial structure of the DoLP shows a diverse set of shapes. Only for three sources do we note a correlation between the ALMA CO and SiO lines, which trace the gas density, and the DoLP, which traces the dust. Conclusion. The clumpiness of the DoLP and the lack of a consistent correlation between the gas and the dust location show that, in the inner circumstellar environment (CSE), dust formation occurs at very specific sites. This has potential consequences for the derived mass-loss rates and dust-to-gas ratio in the inner region of the CSE. Except for $\pi^1$~Gru and perhaps GY Aql, we do not detect interactions between the circumstellar wind and the hypothesized companions that shape the wind at larger scales. Two main scenarios have been proposed for origin of massive runaway stars -- dynamical ejection or release from a binary at the first core collapse -- but their relative contribution remains debated. Using two large spectroscopic campaigns towards massive stars in 30 Doradus, we aim to provide observational constraints on the properties of the O-type runaway population in the most massive active star-forming region in the Local group. We use RV measurements of the O-type star populations in 30 Doradus obtained by the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey and the Tarantula Massive Binary Monitoring to identify single and binary O-type runaways. We discuss their rotational properties and qualitatively compare observations with expectations of ejection scenarios. We identify 23 single and one binary O-type runaway objects, most of them outside the main star-forming regions in 30 Doradus. We find an overabundance of rapid rotators (vsini > 200km/s) among the runaway population, providing an explanation of the overabundance of rapidly rotating stars in the 30 Doradus field. Considerations of the projected rotation rates and runaway line-of-sight (los) velocities reveal a conspicuous absence of rapidly rotating (vsini > 210k/ms), fast moving (v_{los} > 60km/s) runaways, and suggest the presence of two different populations of runaway stars: a population of rapidly-spinning but slowly moving runaways and a population of fast moving but slowly rotating ones. These are detected with a ratio close to 2:1 in our sample. We argue that slowly moving but rapidly spinning runaways result from binary ejections, while rapidly moving but slowly spinning runaways could result from dynamical ejections. Given that detection biases will more strongly impact the slow-moving population, our results suggest that the binary evolution scenario dominates the current massive runaway population in 30 Doradus., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters; 9 pages, 5 figures

Magnetism can greatly impact the evolution of stars. In some stars with OBA spectral types there is direct evidence via the Zeeman effect for stable, large-scale magnetospheres, which lead to the spin-down of the stellar surface and reduced mass loss. So far, a comprehensive grid of stellar structure and evolution models accounting for these effects was lacking. For this reason, we computed and studied models with two magnetic braking and two chemical mixing schemes in three metallicity environments with the MESA software instrument. We find notable differences between the subgrids, which affects the model predictions and thus the detailed characterisation of stars. We are able to quantify the impact of magnetic fields in terms of preventing quasi-chemically homogeneous evolution and producing slowly-rotating, nitrogen-enriched ("Group 2") stars. Magnetic fields can drastically change predictions of evolutionary models of massive stars via mass-loss quenching, magnetic braking, and efficient angular momentum transport, which we aim to quantify in this work. We use the MESA software instrument to compute an extensive main-sequence grid of stellar structure and evolution models, as well as isochrones, accounting for the effects attributed to a surface fossil magnetic field. The grid is densely populated in initial mass (3-60 M$_\odot$), surface equatorial magnetic field strength (0-50 kG), and metallicity (representative of the Solar neighbourhood and the Magellanic Clouds). We use two magnetic braking and two chemical mixing schemes and compare the model predictions for slowly-rotating, nitrogen-enriched ("Group 2") stars with observations in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We quantify a range of initial field strengths that allow for producing Group 2 stars and find that typical values (up to a few kG) lead to solutions. Between the subgrids, we find notable departures in surface abundances and evolutionary paths. In our magnetic models, chemical mixing is always less efficient compared to non-magnetic models due to the rapid spin-down. We identify that quasi-chemically homogeneous main sequence evolution by efficient mixing could be prevented by fossil magnetic fields. We recommend comparing this grid of evolutionary models with spectropolarimetric and spectroscopic observations with the goals of i) revisiting the derived stellar parameters of known magnetic stars, and ii) observationally constraining the uncertain magnetic braking and chemical mixing schemes., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. In the first few Myr the massive stars dynamically interact, produce runaways and affect the initial binary population. Observing and interpreting the dynamics of young massive clusters is key to our understanding of the star formation process and predicting the outcome of stellar evolution. We have studied NGC6611 in the Eagle Nebula (M16), a young massive cluster hosting 19 O stars. We used Gaia EDR3 data to determine the membership, age, cluster dynamics and the kinematics of the massive stars including runaways. The membership analysis yields 137 members located at a mean distance of 1706 $\pm$ 7 pc. The colour - absolute magnitude diagram reveals a blue and a red population of pre-main-sequence stars, consistent with two distinct populations of stars. In line with earlier studies, the youngest population has a mean extinction $A_V$ = 3.6 $\pm$ 0.1 mag and an age = 1.3 $\pm$ 0.2 Myr, while the older population of stars has a mean extinction $A_V$ = 2.0 $\pm$ 0.1 mag and an age = 7.5 $\pm$ 0.4 Myr. The latter population is more spatially extended than the younger generation of stars. We argue that most of the OB stars belong to the younger population. We identify 8 runaways originating from the center of NGC6611, consistent with the dynamical ejection scenario. We show that ~ 50% of the O stars have velocities comparable to or greater than the escape velocity. These O stars can be traced back to the center of NGC6611 with kinematic ages ranging from 0 to 2 Myr. This suggests that dynamical interactions played an important role in the early evolution of NGC6611, which is surprising considering the low current stellar density. Comparing this to simulations of young massive clusters, the required initial radius of 0.1-0.5 pc is not consistent with that of NGC6611. Stellar-mass black holes are the final remnants of stars born with more than 15 solar masses. Billions are expected to reside in the Local Group, yet only few are known, mostly detected through X-rays emitted as they accrete material from a companion star. Here, we report on VFTS 243: a massive X-ray faint binary in the Large Magellanic Cloud. With an orbital period of 10.4-d, it comprises an O-type star of 25 solar masses and an unseen companion of at least nine solar masses. Our spectral analysis excludes a non-degenerate companion at a 5-sigma confidence level. The minimum companion mass implies that it is a black hole. No other X-ray quiet black hole is unambiguously known outside our Galaxy. The (near-)circular orbit and kinematics of VFTS 243 imply that the collapse of the progenitor into a black hole was associated with little or no ejected material or black-hole kick. In accelerating and supersonic media, the interaction of photons with spectral lines can be of ultimate importance. However, fully accounting for such line forces currently can only be done by specialised codes in 1-D steady-state flows. More general cases and higher dimensions require alternative approaches. We presented a comprehensive and fast method for computing the radiation line-force using tables of spectral line-strength distribution parameters, which can be applied in arbitrary (multi-D, time-dependent) simulations, including those accounting for the line-deshadowing instability, to compute the appropriate opacities. We assumed local thermodynamic equilibrium to compute a flux-weighted line opacity from $>4$ million spectral lines. We derived the spectral line strength and tabulated the corresponding line-distribution parameters for a range of input densities $\rho\in[10^{-20},10^{-10}]gcm^{-3}$ and temperatures $T\in[10^4,10^{4.7}]K$. We found that the variation of the line distribution parameters plays an essential role in setting the wind dynamics in our models. In our benchmark study, we also found a good overall agreement between the O-star mass-loss rates of our models and those derived from steady-state studies using more detailed radiative transfer. Our models reinforce that self-consistent variation of the line-distribution parameters is important for the dynamics of line-driven flows. Within a well-calibrated O-star regime, our results support the proposed methodology. In practice, utilising the provided tables, yielded a factor $>100$ speed-up in computational time compared to specialised 1-D model-atmosphere codes of line-driven winds, which constitutes an important step towards efficient multi-D simulations. We conclude that our method and tables are ready to be exploited in various radiation-hydrodynamic simulations where the line force is important.

We present a spectroscopic analysis of the most rapidly rotating stars currently known, VFTS 102 ($v_{e} \sin i = 649 \pm 52$ km s$^{-1}$; O9: Vnnne+) and VFTS 285 ($v_{e} \sin i = 610 \pm 41$ km s$^{-1}$; O7.5: Vnnn), both members of the 30 Dor complex in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This study is based on high resolution ultraviolet spectra from HST/COS and optical spectra from VLT X-shooter plus archival VLT GIRAFFE spectra. We utilize numerical simulations of their photospheres, rotationally distorted shape, and gravity darkening to calculate model spectral line profiles and predicted monochromatic absolute fluxes. We use a guided grid search to investigate parameters that yield best fits for the observed features and fluxes. These fits produce estimates of the physical parameters for these stars (plus a Galactic counterpart, $\zeta$ Oph) including the equatorial rotational velocity, inclination, radius, mass, gravity, temperature, and reddening. We find that both stars appear to be radial velocity constant. VFTS 102 is rotating at critical velocity, has a modest He enrichment, and appears to share the motion of the nearby OB association LH 99. These properties suggest that the star was spun up through a close binary merger. VFTS 285 is rotating at $95\%$ of critical velocity, has a strong He enrichment, and is moving away from the R136 cluster at the center of 30 Dor. Context: The star cluster R136 inside the LMC hosts a rich population of massive stars, including the most massive stars known. The strong stellar winds of these very luminous stars impact their evolution and the surrounding environment. We currently lack detailed knowledge of the wind structure that is needed to quantify this impact. Aims: To observationally constrain the stellar and wind properties of the massive stars in R136, in particular the parameters related to wind clumping. Methods: We simultaneously analyse optical and UV spectroscopy of 53 O-type and 3 WNh-stars using the FASTWIND model atmosphere code and a genetic algorithm. The models account for optically thick clumps and effects related to porosity and velocity-porosity, as well as a non-void interclump medium. Results: We obtain stellar parameters, surface abundances, mass-loss rates, terminal velocities and clumping characteristics and compare these to theoretical predictions and evolutionary models. The clumping properties include the density of the interclump medium and the velocity-porosity of the wind. For the first time, these characteristics are systematically measured for a wide range of effective temperatures and luminosities. Conclusions: We confirm a cluster age of 1.0-2.5 Myr and derive an initial stellar mass of $\geq 250 {\rm M}_\odot$ for the most massive star in our sample, R136a1. The winds of our sample stars are highly clumped, with an average clumping factor of $f_{\rm cl}=29\pm15$. We find tentative trends in the wind-structure parameters as a function of mass-loss rate, suggesting that the winds of stars with higher mass-loss rates are less clumped. We compare several theoretical predictions to the observed mass-loss rates and terminal velocities and find that none satisfactorily reproduces both quantities. Recent high-quality Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry shows that the main sequences (MS) stars of young star clusters form two discrete components in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD). Based on their distribution in the CMD, we show that stars of the blue MS component can be understood as slow rotators originating from stellar mergers. We derive the masses of the blue MS stars, and find that they follow a nearly flat mass function, which supports their unusual formation path. Our results imply that the cluster stars gain their mass in two different ways, by disk accretion leading to rapid rotation, contributing to the red MS, or by binary merger leading to slow rotation and populating the blue MS. We also derive the approximate merger time of the individual stars of the blue MS component, and find a strong early peak in the merger rate, with a lower level merger activity prevailing for tens of Myr. This supports recent binary formation models, and explains new velocity dispersion measurements for members of young star clusters. Our findings shed new light on the origin of the bi-modal mass, spin, and magnetic field distributions of main-sequence stars., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy online. Red supergiants are the most common final evolutionary stage of stars that have initial masses between 8 and 35 times that of the Sun. During this stage, which lasts roughly 100,000 years1, red supergiants experience substantial mass loss. However, the mechanism for this mass loss is unknown. Mass loss may affect the evolutionary path, collapse and future supernova light curve of a red supergiant, and its ultimate fate as either a neutron star or a black hole. From November 2019 to March 2020, Betelgeuse - the second-closest red supergiant to Earth (roughly 220 parsecs, or 724 light years, away) - experienced a historic dimming of its visible brightness. Usually having an apparent magnitude between 0.1 and 1.0, its visual brightness decreased to 1.614 +/- 0.008 magnitudes around 7-13 February 2020 - an event referred to as Betelgeuse's Great Dimming. Here we report high-angular-resolution observations showing that the southern hemisphere of Betelgeuse was ten times darker than usual in the visible spectrum during its Great Dimming. Observations and modelling support a scenario in which a dust clump formed recently in the vicinity of the star, owing to a local temperature decrease in a cool patch that appeared on the photosphere. The directly imaged brightness variations of Betelgeuse evolved on a timescale of weeks. Our findings suggest that a component of mass loss from red supergiants is inhomogeneous, linked to a very contrasted and rapidly changing photosphere

This overview paper presents ATOMIUM, a Large Programme in Cycle 6 with the Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array (ALMA). The goal of ATOMIUM is to understand the dynamics and the gas phase and dust formation chemistry in the winds of evolved asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and red supergiant (RSG) stars. A more general aim is to identify chemical processes applicable to other astrophysical environments. 17 oxygen-rich AGB and RSG stars spanning a range in (circum)stellar parameters and evolutionary phases were observed in a homogeneous observing strategy allowing for an unambiguous comparison. Data were obtained between 213.83 and 269.71 GHz at high (0.025-0.050 arcsec), medium (0.13-0.24 arcsec), and low (about 1 arcsec) angular resolution. The sensitivity per 1.3 km/s channel was 1.5-5 mJy/beam. 13 molecules were designated as primary molecules in the survey: CO, SiO, AlO, AlOH, TiO, TiO2, HCN, SO, SO2, SiS, CS, H2O, and NaCl. The scientific motivation, survey design, sample properties, data reduction, and an overview of the data products are described; and we highlight one scientific result - the wind kinematics of the ATOMIUM sources. The ATOMIUM sources often have a slow wind acceleration, and a fraction of the gas reaches a velocity which can be up to a factor of two times larger than previously reported terminal velocities assuming isotropic expansion, and the wind kinematic profiles establish that the radial velocity described by the momentum equation for a spherical wind structure cannot capture the complexity of the velocity field. In 15 sources, some molecular transitions other than 12CO v=0 J=2-1 reach a higher outflow velocity, with a spatial emission zone that is often greater than 30 stellar radii, but much less than the extent of CO. Binary interaction with a (sub)stellar companion might (partly) explain the non-monotonic behaviour of the projected velocity field.

In this paper we make predictions for the behaviour of wind bubbles around young massive stars using analytic theory. We do this in order to determine why there is a discrepancy between theoretical models that predict that winds should play a secondary role to photoionisation in the dynamics of HII regions, and observations of young HII regions that seem to suggest a driving role for winds. In particular, regions such as M42 in Orion have neutral hydrogen shells, suggesting that the ionising radiation is trapped closer to the star. We first derive formulae for wind bubble evolution in non-uniform density fields, focusing on singular isothermal sphere density fields with a power law index of -2. We find that a classical "Weaver"-like expansion velocity becomes constant in such a density distribution. We then calculate the structure of the photoionised shell around such wind bubbles, and determine at what point the mass in the shell cannot absorb all of the ionising photons emitted by the star, causing an "overflow" of ionising radiation. We also estimate perturbations from cooling, gravity, magnetic fields and instabilities, all of which we argue are secondary effects for the conditions studied here. Our wind-driven model provides a consistent explanation for the behaviour of M42 to within the errors given by observational studies. We find that in relatively denser molecular cloud environments \around single young stellar sources, champagne flows are unlikely until the wind shell breaks up due to turbulence or clumping in the cloud., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, published in MNRAS

S-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are thought to be intermediates in the evolution of oxygen- to carbon-rich AGB stars. The chemical compositions of their circumstellar envelopes are also intermediate, but have not been studied in as much detail as their carbon- and oxygen-rich counterparts. We aim to determine the abundances of AlCl and AlF from rotational lines, which have been observed for the first time towards an S-type AGB star, W Aql. In combination with models based on PACS observations, we aim to update our chemical kinetics network based on these results. We analyse ALMA observations towards W Aql of AlCl in the ground and first two vibrationally excited states and AlF in the ground vibrational state. Using radiative transfer models, we determine the abundances and spatial abundance distributions of Al$^{35}$Cl, Al$^{37}$Cl, and AlF. We also model HCl and HF emission and compare these models to PACS spectra to constrain the abundances of these species. AlCl is found in clumps very close to the star, with emission confined within 0.1$^{\prime\prime}$ of the star. AlF emission is more extended, with faint emission extending 0.2$^{\prime\prime}$ to 0.6$^{\prime\prime}$ from the continuum peak. We find peak abundances, relative to H$_2$, of $1.7\times 10^{-7}$ for Al$^{35}$Cl, $7\times 10^{-8}$ for Al$^{37}$Cl and $1\times 10^{-7}$ for AlF. From the PACS spectra, we find abundances of $9.7\times 10^{-8}$ and $\leq 10^{-8}$, relative to H$_2$, for HCl and HF, respectively. The AlF abundance exceeds the solar F abundance, indicating that fluorine synthesised in the AGB star has already been dredged up to the surface of the star and ejected into the circumstellar envelope. From our analysis of chemical reactions in the wind, we conclude that AlF may participate in the dust formation process, but we cannot fully explain the rapid depletion of AlCl seen in the wind., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

A pioneering study showed that the fine structure in the luminosity function (LF) of young star clusters contains information about the evolutionary stage (age) and composition of the stellar population. The notable features include the H-peak, which is the result of the onset of hydrogen burning turning pre-main sequence stars into main sequence stars. The feature moves toward the faint end of the LF, and eventually disappears as the population evolves. Another detectable feature is the Wielen dip, a dip at M_V ~ 7 mag in the LF first identified in 1974 for stars in the solar environment. Later studies also identified this feature in the LF of star clusters. The Wielen dip is caused by the increased importance of H- opacity in a certain range of low-mass stars. We studied the detailed structure in the luminosity function using the data from Gaia DR2 and PARSEC stellar evolution models with the aim to further our understanding of young stellar populations. We analyzed the astrometric properties of stars in the solar neighborhood (< 20 pc) and in various relatively nearby (< 400 pc) young (< 50 Myr) open clusters and OB associations, and compare the features in the luminosity function with those generated by PARSEC models. The Wielen dip is confirmed in the LF of all the populations, including the solar neighborhood, at M_G ~7 mag. The H-peak is present in the LF of the field stars in the solar neighborhood. It likely signals that the population is mixed with a significant number of stars younger than 100 Myr. The H-peak is found in the LF of young open clusters and OB associations, and its location varies with age. Our observations with Gaia DR2 confirm the evolution of the H-peak from 5 Myr up to 47 Myr. We investigate the impact of optically thick clumping on stellar wind diagnostics in O supergiants and constrain wind parameters associated with porosity in velocity space. This is the first time the effects of optically thick clumping have been investigated for a sample of massive hot stars, using models including a full optically thick clumping description. We re-analyse spectroscopic observations of a sample of eight O supergiants. Using a genetic algorithm wrapper around the NLTE atmosphere code FASTWIND we obtain simultaneous fits to optical and UV spectra and determine photospheric and wind properties and surface abundances. We provide empirical constraints on a number of wind parameters including the clumping factors, mass-loss rates and terminal wind velocities. Additionally, we establish the first systematic empirical constraints on velocity filling factors and interclump densities. These parameters describe clump distribution in velocity-space and density of the interclump medium in physical-space, respectively. We observe a mass-loss rate reduction of a factor of 3.6 compared to theoretical predictions from Vink et al. (2000), and mass-loss rates within a factor 1.4 of predictions from Bj\"orklund et al. (2021). We confirm that including optically thick clumping allows simultaneous fitting of recombination lines and resonance lines, including the unsaturated UV phosphorus lines (Pv 1118-1128), without reducing the phosphorus abundance. We find that, on average, half of the wind velocity field is covered by dense clumps. We also find that these clumps are 25 times denser than the average wind, and that the interclump medium is 3-10 times less dense than the mean wind. The former result agrees well with theoretical predictions, the latter suggests that lateral filling-in of radially compressed gas might be critical for setting the scale of the rarefied interclump matter., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 35 pages, 20 figures

Observations of massive stars in young open clusters (< ~8 Myr) have shown that a majority of them are in binary systems, most of which will interact during their life. Populations of massive stars older than ~20 Myr allow us to probe the outcome of such interactions after many systems have experienced mass and angular momentum transfer. Using multi-epoch integral-field spectroscopy, we investigate the multiplicity properties of the massive-star population in NGC 330 (~40 Myr) in the Small Magellanic Cloud to search for imprints of stellar evolution on the multiplicity properties. From six epochs of VLT/MUSE observations supported by adaptive optics we extract spectra and measure radial velocities for stars brighter than F814W = 19. We identify single-lined spectroscopic binaries through significant RV variability as well as double-lined spectroscopic binaries, and quantify the observational biases for binary detection. The observed spectroscopic binary fraction is 13.2+/-2.0 %. Considering period and mass ratio ranges from log(P)=0.15-3.5, and q = 0.1-1.0, and a representative set of orbital parameter distributions, we find a bias-corrected close binary fraction of 34 +8 -7 %. This seems to decline for the fainter stars, which indicates either that the close binary fraction drops in the B-type domain, or that the period distribution becomes more heavily weighted towards longer orbital periods. Both fractions vary strongly in different regions of the color-magnitude diagram which probably reveals the imprint of the binary history of different groups of stars. We provide the first homogeneous RV study of a large sample of B-type stars at a low metallicity. The overall bias-corrected close binary fraction of B stars in NGC 330 is lower than the one reported for younger Galactic and LMC clusters. Evolved low- to intermediate-mass stars are known to shed their gaseous envelope into a large, dusty, molecule-rich circumstellar nebula which typically develops a high degree of structural complexity. Most of the large-scale, spatially correlated structures in the nebula are thought to originate from the interaction of the stellar wind with a companion. As part of the Atomium large programme, we observed the M-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star R Hydrae with ALMA. The morphology of the inner wind of R Hya, which has a known companion at ~3500 au, was determined from maps of CO and SiO obtained at high angular resolution. A map of the CO emission reveals a multi-layered structure consisting of a large elliptical feature at an angular scale of ~10'' that is oriented along the north-south axis. The wind morphology within the elliptical feature is dominated by two hollow bubbles. The bubbles are on opposite sides of the AGB star and lie along an axis with a position angle of ~115 deg. Both bubbles are offset from the central star, and their appearance in the SiO channel maps indicates that they might be shock waves travelling through the AGB wind. An estimate of the dynamical age of the bubbles yields an age of the order of 100 yr, which is in agreement with the previously proposed elapsed time since the star last underwent a thermal pulse. When the CO and SiO emission is examined on subarcsecond angular scales, there is evidence for an inclined, differentially rotating equatorial density enhancement, strongly suggesting the presence of a second nearby companion. The position angle of the major axis of this disc is ~70 deg in the plane of the sky. We tentatively estimate that a lower limit on the mass of the nearby companion is ~0.65 Msol on the basis of the highest measured speeds in the disc and the location of its inner rim at ~6 au from the AGB star., Comment: 21 pages, 23 figures

R 144 is the visually brightest WR star in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). R 144 was reported to be a binary, making it potentially the most massive binary thus observed. We perform a comprehensive spectral, photometric, orbital, and polarimetric analysis of R 144. R 144 is an eccentric (e=0.51) 74.2-d binary comprising two relatively evolved (age~2 Myr), H-rich WR stars. The hotter primary (WN5/6h, T=50 kK) and the cooler secondary (WN6/7h,T=45kK) have nearly equal masses. The combination of low rotation and H-depletion observed in the system is well reproduced by contemporary evolution models that include boosted mass-loss at the upper-mass end. The systemic velocity of R 144 and its relative isolation suggest that it was ejected as a runaway from the neighbouring R 136 cluster. The optical light-curve shows a clear orbital modulation that can be well explained as a combination of two processes: excess emission stemming from wind-wind collisions and double wind eclipses. Our light-curve model implies an orbital inclination of i=60.4+-1.5deg, resulting in accurately constrained dynamical masses of 74+-4 and 69+-4 Msun. Assuming that both binary components are core H-burning, these masses are difficult to reconcile with the derived luminosities (logL1,2 = 6.44, 6.39 [Lsun]), which correspond to evolutionary masses of the order of 110 and 100Msun, respectively. Taken at face value, our results imply that both stars have high classical Eddington factors of Gamma_e = 0.78+-0.1. If the stars are on the main sequence, their derived radii (~25Rsun) suggest that they are only slightly inflated, even at this high Eddington factor. Alternatively, the stars could be core-He burning, strongly inflated from the regular size of classical Wolf-Rayet stars (~1Rsun), a scenario that could help resolve the observed mass discrepancy., Comment: Accepted to A&A on the April 06 2021. 17 pages + 5 page appendix. $\tau$ Sco, a well-studied magnetic B-type star in the Upper Sco association, has a number of surprising characteristics. It rotates very slowly and shows nitrogen excess. Its surface magnetic field is much more complex than a purely dipolar configuration which is unusual for a magnetic massive star. We employ the CMFGEN radiative transfer code to determine the fundamental parameters and surface CNO and helium abundances. Then, we employ MESA and GENEC stellar evolution models accounting for the effects of surface magnetic fields. To reconcile $\tau$ Sco's properties with single-star models, an increase is necessary in the efficiency of rotational mixing by a factor of 3 to 10 and in the efficiency of magnetic braking by a factor of 10. The spin down could be explained by assuming a magnetic field decay scenario. However, the simultaneous chemical enrichment challenges the single-star scenario. Previous works indeed suggested a stellar merger origin for $\tau$ Sco. However, the merger scenario also faces similar challenges as our magnetic single-star models to explain $\tau$ Sco's simultaneous slow rotation and nitrogen excess. In conclusion, the single-star channel seems less likely and versatile to explain these discrepancies, while the merger scenario and other potential binary-evolution channels still require further assessment as to whether they may self-consistently explain the observables of $\tau$ Sco., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Context. Red supergiants are observed to undergo vigorous mass-loss. However, to date, no theoretical model has succeeded in explaining the origins of these objects' winds. This strongly limits our understanding of red supergiant evolution and Type II-P and II-L supernova progenitor properties. Aims. We examine the role that vigorous atmospheric turbulence may play in initiating and determining the mass-loss rates of red supergiant stars. Methods. We analytically and numerically solve the equations of conservation of mass and momentum, which we later couple to an atmospheric temperature structure, to obtain theoretically motivated mass-loss rates. We then compare these to state-of-the-art empirical mass-loss rate scaling formulae as well as observationally inferred mass-loss rates of red supergiants. Results. We find that the pressure due to the characteristic turbulent velocities inferred for red supergiants is sufficient to explain the mass-loss rates of these objects in the absence of the normally employed opacity from circumstellar dust. Motivated by this initial success, we provide a first theoretical and fully analytic mass-loss rate prescription for red supergiants. We conclude by highlighting some intriguing possible implications of these rates for future studies of stellar evolution, especially in light of the lack of a direct dependence on metallicity., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

The processes by which red supergiants lose mass are not fully understood thus-far and their mass-loss rates lack theoretical constraints. The ambient surroundings of the nearby M0.5 Iab star Antares offers an ideal environment to obtain detailed empirical information on the outflow properties at its onset, and hence indirectly, on the mode(s) of mass loss. We present and analyse optical VLT/SPHERE/ZIMPOL polarimetric imaging with angular resolution down to 23 milli-arcsec, sufficient to spatially resolve both the stellar disk and its direct surroundings. We detect a conspicuous feature in polarised intensity that we identify as a clump containing dust, which we characterise through 3D radiative transfer modelling. The clump is positioned behind the plane of the sky, therefore has been released from the backside of the star, and its inner edge is only 0.3 stellar radii above the surface. The current dust mass in the clump is $1.3^{+0.2}_{-1.0} \times 10^{-8}$ M$_{\odot}$, though its proximity to the star implies that dust nucleation is probably still ongoing. The ejection of clumps of gas and dust makes a non-negligible contribution to the total mass lost from the star which could possibly be linked to localised surface activity such as convective motions or non-radial pulsations., Comment: 15 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS
