Background: Assessing individuals' positioning regarding their adaptation to retirement is a relevant indicator of health status in one of the most critical life transitions occurring in adulthood. Objective: To validate the Positioning Scale for Adaptation to Retirement (EPFAR). Methodology: Methodological study of scale validation carried out with a random sample of 115 Portuguese retirees. The quality of the instrument was assessed. An exploratory factor analysis assessed construct validity, and an internal consistency analysis assessed reliability. Results: The retained factors resulted in a 4-factor solution that explained 56.41% of the variance. The internal consistency analysis was performed using Cronbach's alpha, and the results obtained for all items of the scale revealed an α = 0.90. Conclusion: The EPFAR is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing individuals' positioning towards retirement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The Mental Health First Aid Program (MHFA®) is one of the educational tools that can contribute substantially to increasing the mental health literacy of young higher education students. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the MHFA program, the mental health literacy rate about depression and anxiety in nursing students. Methodology: Pre-experimental design, with a single group, evaluation pre- and post-intervention, applied to a sample of 219 students in the 1st year of the bachelor's degree in nursing. The Questionnaire for Assessment of Mental Health Literacy (QuALiSMental) was used. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics software v24.0. Results: The program is effective in increasing the mental health literacy rate. Statistically significant changes were observed in all dimensions analyzed, with moderate to high values in the effect size measures. Conclusion: The MHFA program reveals to be appropriate in the integration of higher education students and can be used as a preventative measure and to promote mental health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA®) educational program has the potential to increase mental health literacy, reduce personal stigma, and empower individuals for their mental health. Objective: To evaluate the impact of MHFA training program in undergraduate nursing students. Methodology: Pre-experimental study, with a single group design, pre- and post-intervention assessment, applied to a sample of 46 undergraduate nursing students. The Questionnaire for Assessment of Mental Health Literacy was applied as a data collection tool. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS V24.0 and G-Power 3.1 software programs. Results: At the end of the program, students showed an improvement in all components of mental health literacy about depression, increasing their confidence to provide first aid. Conclusion: The program proves to be an adequate tool for increasing the mental health literacy of nursing students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Theoretical framework: The assessment of mental health literacy is a key aspect in the design and implementation of mental health education and awareness programmes, specifically in school settings, given the high prevalence of mental disorders in adolescents and young people and the need for interventions adjusted to specific settings and target groups. Objectives: To describe the assessment of the psychometric properties of the Questionnaire for Assessment of Mental Health Literacy (QuALiSMental). Methodology: Administration of the questionnaire to a random and representative sample of 4.938 Portuguese adolescents and young people attending schools in the area of coverage of the Regional Directorate of Education - Centre. Results: The QuALiSMental has acceptable levels of reliability and a factor structure which is consistent with the theoretical components of mental health literacy. Conclusion: The questionnaire may be applied both as a screening measure of literacy and as a measure for assessing the impact of interventions on the promotion of mental health among adolescents and young people. - Abstract
Theoretical framework: Depressive symptoms are common among the elderly, and it is important to have access to a reliable and easy-to-use screening scale. Objectives: To contribute to the validation of the Portuguese versions of the 15-item, 10-item and 5-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Methodology: The GDS-15 was hetero-applied to 889 elders, with a mean age of 78.02 years. The factor structure of the GDS-15 and the internal consistency of the three versions were analysed. Results: The three-factor solution of the GDS-15 explains 45.89% of the variance, but four items load on two factors. The internal consistency of the GDS-5, GDS-10 and GDS-15 versions, as well as of factor 1 is satisfactory, with Cronbach’s alpha values ranging between 0.78 and 0.84, but it is modest in relation to factors 2 and 3, with 0.62 and 0.59 values, respectively. The GDS-5 and the GDS- 10 are strongly correlated with the GDS-15. Conclusion: The GDS versions revealed good psychometric properties and may be used to screen depressive symptoms in the elderly; however, the GDS-15 revealed same fragility related to factor structure. - Abstract
Background: personal and perceived stigmas are referred in the literature as obstacles and barriers to help-seeking in mental health, as well as areas to favour in community intervention. Objectives: to compare levels of personal and perceived stigma of Portuguese adolescents and young people in relation to alcohol abuse and to identify predictors of help-seeking intention in situations of abusive alcohol consumption. Methodology: a quantitative descriptive-correlational study, conducted using a multistage sample selected by clusters, from participants who have completed the Questionnaire on Mental Health Literacy Assessment - QuALiSMental (Loureiro, Pedreiro and Correia, 2012). Results: statistically significant differences were found in levels of personal and perceived stigma. Gender has influence on stigma, as well as familiarity and recognition. Personal and perceived stigmas, as well as familiarity and recognition, are predictors of help-seeking. Conclusions: as alcohol consumption among adolescents and young people is widely distributed in society and is culturally justified, priority should be given to education and awareness campaigns to encourage the reduction of perceived stigma because disorders associated with alcohol are those that involve greater stigma and social discrimination. MENTAL health , *PSYCHIATRY , *MENTAL illness , *PEOPLE with mental illness , *PATHOLOGICAL psychology - Abstract
The recent changes carried out to the level of mental and psychiatric health politics, visible in international and national different reports (OMS, 2001; CE, 2005; NCRMHS, 2007) recognize the stigma and discrimination associated to mental illness, perpetuated in stereotypes like dangerousness, unpredictable's and incurability. Leaving from these fidgets the present study was developed having as goals to, evaluate beliefs and attitudes toward mental ill and illness and analyze contribute of socio-demographic determinants and beliefs in this attitudes. This study (descriptive- correlational) was carried out a sample of 834 individuals, adults and residents in four parishes of Penacova. The instruments of data collection were: a socio-demographic questionnaire; Opinions About Mental Illness Scale - OMIS, (Cohen & Struening, 1962; 1963; Brockington et al., 1993; Oliveira, 2005); Mental Illness Beliefs Inventory (MIBY) - Loureiro et al., 2006); Questionnaire of Mental Illness causes - QMDC, elaborate by the authors of the study. The results about beliefs and attitudes toward mental ill and illness show a high degree of acceptance and tolerance, despite escorted for myths as incurability and dangerousness. The statistical incurability and dangerousness. The statistical analyses show, on the one hand, that the most authoritarian attitudes are to the beliefs in the incurability and dangerousness, for the other that the most tolerant and benevolent attitudes are associated to a bigger recognition of the illness, including its medical condition. Thus, we concluded that, besides, the distance between thought and action about mental illness, the social desirability natural in this kind of studies, the results charge a positive shifting in the way of facing these problems, although they are anchored in stereotypes like incurability and dangerousness.
