Laser photobiomodulation (LPBM) has been shown to be one of the possible modulating agents of inflammation. Similarly, medicinal plants, such as chamomile (Matricaria recutita) are also used with the same purpose. To evaluate tissue repair in the dorsum of the tongue of rats under topical use of chamomile alone and in association with LPBM. Seventy‐five male Wistar rats received a standardized wound on the dorsum of the tongue and were allocated into experimental groups: Control (G1), Chamomile Fluid extract (G2), Chamomile Infusion (G3), Laser (G4), Chamomile Infusion + Laser (G5). Euthanasia was done on days 3, 7, and 14 after surgery. Ulcers were evaluated and measured with a caliper. Sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Picrosirius Red allowed evaluation of edema, inflammatory infiltrate, cellularity, and re‐epithelialization and characterization of total collagen. Histomorphometric analysis of the percentage of total collagen, the distance from the basal layer to the epithelial surface, and the thickness of the stratum corneum were performed. The G2 and G4 groups modulated the exudative and proliferative phases of inflammation, both clinically and histologically. The G3 and G5 groups did not show significant differences in relation to the G1 group in most of the evaluated parameters. Chamomile fluid extract and LPBM alone showed better clinical and histological responses for tissue repair than the association between these therapeutic modalities. There were differences in the parameters of clinical, histological, and histomorphometric patterns between the experimental groups of the present investigation. Aim: To evaluate the influence of the parameters L* a* b* on the variation of the color of bovine tooth enamel submitted to artificial darkening, after simulated brushing, with whitening toothpastes containing blue covarine. Methods: To undertake this study in vitro, 60 specimens (SP) were divided into 6 groups (n=10): control group (CGwater) and 5 test groups (GT1-Colgate Total 12, GT2-Oral-B 3D White Perfection, GT3-Colgate Luminous Instant White, GT4-CloseUp White Diamond Attraction, GT5-Sorriso Xtreme White). The specimens were darkened with coffee and submitted to simulated brushing for 6, 12, and 24 months. The alteration in the color was evaluated using CIELAB parameters and the ΔL, Δa, Δb and ΔE were calculated. The data was analyzed through generalized linear models using the R program and considering a level of significance of 5%. Results: The parameters L*, a* and the ΔL, Δa obtained better results in the test group than in the control group. There were no statistical differences between CG and the test groups for the evaluation of the b* parameter. In the evaluation of the Δb, the GT3 differed statistically from the CG. In relation to the ΔE, all the group tests showed a variation in color statistically greater than that of the CG and the GT4 showed the greatest variation, not differing from the GT3 during the periods studied. Conclusion: The mechanical and optical whitening agents positively influenced the values L*a* and b*, as well as in its variations and in the ΔE. It is important to emphasize, however, that to analyze tooth whitening it is necessary to evaluate their parameters together. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To assess the influence of dental bleaching on the susceptibility of developing carieslike lesions. Method and Materials: Enamel slabs obtained from recently extracted human third molars were submitted to different bleaching techniques: at-home, with 10% and 16% carbamide peroxide (G1 and G2, respectively; Whiteness Perfect); and in-office, with 37% carbamide peroxide (G3; Whiteness Super) and 35% hydrogen peroxide (G4; Whiteness HP), activated by light-emitting diode and laser. The control groups G5 and G6 were not bleached. Afterward, all specimens, with the exception of G6, were exposed to a highly cariogenic challenge by means of pH cycling. G6 served as the control for the artificial caries development methodology. Assessment of the enamel carieslike lesions was made visually by 3 independent examiners, who attributed scores representing the severity of white spot lesions (0 to 3). Statistical analysis was performed with the Kruskal-Wallis (P ≤ .001) and multiple paired comparison tests. Results: Interrater reliability was expressed in a range of 0.70 to 0.82 kappa values. The median scores per group were as follows: G1 and G2 = 1; G3, G4, and G5 = 2; and G6 = 0. Conclusion: Home bleaching reduced the susceptibility to dental caries, while in-office bleaching did not influence the development of caries lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this report is to present the clinical case of a patient with severe symptoms of dentinal hypersensitivity after bariatric surgery. A 40-year-old woman had a complaint of hypersensitivity in all teeth after bariatric surgery to treat morbid obesity. The patient had multiple sites of gingival recession associated with pain symptoms that were characteristic of dentinal hypersensitivity. Subepithelial connective tissue grafting was performed, using either coronal flap displacement techniques or a tunnel-type approach, at the sites of gingival recession and/or dentinal hypersensitivity. Surgery resulted in gains of keratinized mucosa and root surface coverage as well as regression of pain. Patients who undergo bariatric surgery should be monitored for development of oral health-related complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this article was to present a literature review of oral manifestations reported by celiac disease patients. Methods: A review of the published literature for oral manifestations present in celiac disease patients was conducted from the following databases: PubMed®; MEDLINE; Web of Science; Science Direct; and Scielo. Results: According to some literature studies, prevalence of enamel defects and recurrent aphthous stomatitis was observed in approximately 10% to 96% and 4% to 41% of 2- to 86-year-old celiac patients, respectively. Conclusion: The presence of these clinical features in children may signal the need for early investigation of possible celiac disease, especially in asymptomatic cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a 35% hydrogen peroxide--based gel without activation in vitro on three areas of the tooth surface. Vestibular faces of human premolar teeth were darkened, followed by two whitenings at 7-day intervals. The efficacy of whitening was determined in the cervical third, medium third and incisal third of the tooth surface with an Easyshade-Vita spectrophotometer based on the CIELab system. The L, a, b parameters were determined for each third by the identification of high luminosity and hues tending to green and yellow; pigmentation luminosity was then reduced, and the parameters a and b became reddish and yellowish, respectively. Seven days after the first whitening, there were significant improvements in L and a values. Seven days after the second whitening, the three parameters returned to values close to the initial values; the b parameter was most strongly correlated with whitening efficacy. DE values revealed a visually perceptible difference. There was a satisfactory removal of pigmentation after both whitenings, while the lack of uniformity among the tooth-surface thirds after the first session justified the performance of two whitening procedures. With regard to each third, DE indicated a visibly perceptible difference, although L, a and b values showed no statistically significant differences.
