Short dental implants with platform matching connection have been used for the rehabilitation of atrophic jaws whenever standard-length dental implants cannot be placed without prior bone augmentation. Yet, there remains a lack of data regarding the risk of technical failures when the all-on-4 configuration is performed in atrophic jaws with platform-switching distal short dental implants. Thus, the current study used the finite element method to evaluate the mechanical behavior at the level of the prosthetic components of the all-on-4 concept performed in atrophic mandible using short-length distal implants with platform switching (PSW) connection. Three models of the all-on-4 configuration were generated in human atrophic mandibles. The geometric models consisted of PSW connection tilted standard (AO4T; θ = 30 deg; 11 mm-length), straight standard (AO4S; θ = 0 deg; 11 mm-length) and straight short (AO4Sh; θ = 0 deg; 8 mm-length) distal implants. A resultant force of 300 N was performed obliquely in the left side and posterior region of the prosthetic bar. The von Mises equivalent stress (σvm) and maximum and minimum principal stresses (σmax and σmin) were performed at level of the prosthetic components/implants and peri-implant bone crest, respectively. The general displacement of the models was also evaluated. The stress analysis was performed on the side of load application. The AO4S configuration showed the lowest values of σvm in the mesial left (ML) and distal left (DL) abutments (37.53 MPa and 232.77 MPa, respectively) and dental implants (91.53 MPa and 231.21 MPa, respectively). The AO4Sh configuration showed the highest values of σvm in the bar screw (102.36 MPa), abutment (117.56 MPa), and dental implant (293.73 MPa) of the ML area. Among the models, the highest values of σmax and σmin were noticed in the peri-implant bone crest of the AO4T design (131.48 MPa and 195.31 MPa, respectively). All models showed similar values of general displacements, which were concentrated in the mandible symphysis. The all-on-4 configurations designed with PSW connection and tilted standard (AO4T; θ = 30 deg; 11 mm-length), straight standard (AO4S; θ = 0 deg; 11 mm-length) or straight short (AO4Sh; θ = 0 deg; 8 mm-length) distal implants were not associated with higher odds of technical failures. In this work, α-Ag 2-2 x Cu x WO 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.16) solid solutions with enhanced antibacterial (against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ) and antifungal (against Candida albicans ) activities are reported. A plethora of techniques (X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinements, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, micro-Raman spectroscopy, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence emissions, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) were employed to characterize the as-synthetized samples and determine the local coordination geometry of Cu 2+ cations at the orthorhombic lattice. To find a correlation between morphology and biocide activity, the experimental results were sustained by first-principles calculations at the density functional theory level to decipher the cluster coordinations and electronic properties of the exposed surfaces. Based on the analysis of the under-coordinated Ag and Cu clusters at the (010) and (101) exposed surfaces, we propose a mechanism to explain the biocide activity of these solid solutions.

Silver tungstate (Ag 2 WO 4 ) shows structural polymorphism with different crystalline phases, namely, orthorhombic, hexagonal, and cubic structures that are commonly known as α, β, and γ, respectively. In this work, these Ag 2 WO 4 polymorphs were selectively and successfully synthesized through a simple precipitation route at ambient temperature. The polymorph-controlled synthesis was conducted by means of the volumetric ratios of the silver nitrate/tungstate sodium dehydrate precursors in solution. The structural and electronic properties of the as-synthesized Ag 2 WO 4 polymorphs were investigated by using a combination of X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinements, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy images, and photoluminescence. To complement and rationalize the experimental results, first-principles calculations, at the density functional theory level, were carried out, leading to an unprecedented glimpse into the atomic-level properties of the morphology and the exposed surfaces of Ag 2 WO 4 polymorphs. Following the analysis of the local coordination of Ag and W cations (clusters) at each exposed surface of the three polymorphs, the structure-property relationship between the morphology and the photocatalytic and antibacterial activities against amiloride degradation under ultraviolet light irradiation and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus , respectively, was investigated. A possible mechanism of the photocatalytic and antibacterial activity as well the formation process and growth of the polymorphs is also explored and proposed.

Purpose: This study evaluated the mechanical behavior of different configurations of the All-on-4 treatment concept designed with straight short (6-mm-length), straight standard (11-mm-length), or tilted standard (30-degree angled; 11-mm-length) posterior implants., Materials and Methods: The All-on-4 configurations were performed in atrophic mandible models and consisted of anterior straight standard and posterior tilted standard implants (H1 model), anterior straight standard and posterior straight short implants (H2 model), and anterior and posterior straight standard implants (H3 model). Three oblique forces of 100 N were simulated in the posterior region of the prosthetic bar. The values of stress were obtained for the ductile materials using the von Mises equivalent stress (σ vm ) criteria. The stress peaks in the peri-implant bone crest were measured by the maximum (σ max ) and minimum (σ min ) principal stresses. The two-way analysis of variance (two-way ANOVA) and Tukey post hoc tests determined significant differences (P < .01) of stress values among the ductile materials (implant and prosthetic components)., Results: The use of tilted standard posterior implants (H1 model) showed the lowest values of σ max and σ min in the posterior region of the peri-implant bone area. On the other hand, the use of straight short (H2 model) or straight standard (H3 model) posterior implants significantly reduced the von Mises mean stresses in the bar screws, abutments, and abutment screws (P < .01)., Conclusion: The higher odds of technical failures (screw fracture/loosening) may be expected when the All-on-4 configuration is performed with tilted standard posterior implants. Also, peri-implant bone overload may occur when the All-on-4 design is performed with straight short or straight standard posterior implants in atrophic mandibles.

Crystal morphology with different surfaces is important for improving the antibacterial activity of materials. In this experimental and theoretical study, the antibacterial activity of β-Ag 2 MoO 4 microcrystals against the Gram-positive bacteria, namely, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and the Gram-negative bacteria, namely, Escherichia coli (E. coli), was investigated. In this study, β-Ag 2 MoO 4 crystals with different morphologies were synthetized by a simple co-precipitation method using three different solvents. The antimicrobial efficacy of the obtained microcrystals against both bacteria increased according to the solvent used in the following order: water < ammonia < ethanol. Supported by experimental evidence, a correlation between morphology, surface energy, and antibacterial performance was established. By using the theoretical Wulff construction, which was obtained by means of density functional calculations, the morphologies with large exposition of the (001) surface exhibited superior antibacterial activity. This study provides a low cost route for synthesizing β-Ag 2 MoO 4 crystals and a guideline for enhancing the biological effect of biocides on pathogenic bacteria by the morphological modulation., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. The number of studies on microcrystals containing silver has increased in recent decades. Among the silver-containing microcrystals, α-AgVO 3 has gained prominence owing to its polymorphism that allows it to exert interesting antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microorganisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antifungal activity and cytotoxicity of three different α-AgVO 3 microcrystals when in solution. α-AgVO 3 microcrystals were synthesized using the co-precipitation method at three different temperatures (10 °C, 20 °C, and 30 °C), and then characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The antifungal activity of α-AgVO 3 microcrystals against Candida albicans was determined by estimating the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC). Fluorescence images were obtained to confirm antifungal concentrations. To assess the biocompatibility of microcrystals applied at MIC and MFC on keratinocytes cells (NOK-si), an Alamar Blue assay, scanning electron microscopy, and a DNA gel integrity test were carried out. The quantitative and qualitative results showed that, regardless of the co-precipitation method used to synthetize α-AgVO 3 microcrystals, C. albicans growth was visibly inhibited at 3.9 μg/mL (MIC) and completely inhibited at 15.62 μg/mL (MFC). The cytotoxic and genotoxic outcomes revealed that the MIC and MFC concentrations did not affect NOK-si cell morphology, proliferation, or DNA integrity. The search for new antimicrobial materials has been the focus of the research community recently because of increases in microbial resistance. Silver tungstate (α-Ag 2 WO 4 ) microcrystals have shown encouraging results regarding their antimicrobial activity. However, in addition to the promising outcomes in fighting oral disease, cytotoxic tests are mandatory for screening new materials for biological applications. Here, we developed a better understanding of the effects of microcrystals on the behavior of both human gingival fibroblast (HGF) cells and three-dimensional (3D) collagen matrices. To perform these experiments, the lowest concentration of α-Ag 2 WO 4 capable of preventing the visible growth of Candida albicans (C. albicans) planktonic cells was defined as the test concentration, and it ranged from 0.781 (C1) to 7.81 (C2) to 78.1 (C3) μg/mL. Complete medium and lysis buffer (LB) served as negative (C - ) and positive (C + ) controls, respectively. The effect of the microcrystal concentration on the morphology, remodeling and proliferation of HGF cells was evaluated by different approaches. Quantitative and qualitative assessments demonstrated that α-Ag 2 WO 4 did not affect the mitochondrial enzymatic activity of HGF cells cultured in a monolayer or the cell viability within 3D collagen matrices. These experiments showed that α-Ag 2 WO 4 at the C2 concentration did not damage the genomic DNA. The development of new materials is attractive for the possible treatment of diseases and for avoiding indiscriminate prescribing of antibiotics. These findings provide information on the effect of α-Ag 2 WO 4 on cell behavior and reveal that these microcrystals are non-cytotoxic against human gingival cells over a sufficient period to measure the hazard potential., (Copyright © 2018. Purpose: To investigate the influence of surface characteristics and saliva on the adhesion and biofilm formation of Candida glabrata and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) to soft liners and tissue conditioners., Methods: For each material (Ufi Gel P - UG; Sofreliner S - SS; Trusoft - TR; Coe Comfort - CC; Softone - ST), specimens were prepared and roughness (Ra), hydrophobicity (water contact angles-WCA) and surface free energy (SFE) were measured. Surface morphology was also analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Specimens were incubated in C. glabrata or MRSA suspensions for 90 minutes (adhesion) or 48 hours (biofilm). The absorbance (AB) was measured by XTT assay. Experiments were performed using specimens that were either uncoated or had been coated with saliva. Data were analyzed using one- or two-way ANOVAs, followed by Tukey's test (α= 0.05)., Results: TR exhibited the highest Ra and UG the lowest. SEM images also showed that UG and SS had smooth surfaces, while TR presented several irregularities and pores. In the absence of saliva, UG and SS presented higher WCA and lower SFE than the other materials. XTT results showed that, in the C. glabrata adhesion assay, the AB value was higher for TR followed by UG > CC> SS> ST. For the biofilm formation of C. glabrata, AB values were in the following order TR > CC = UG > ST = SS. In the adhesion assay, AB values obtained for MRSA were TR > UG = CC > ST > SS and for the biofilm formation were TR > ST > CC > UG > SS. Saliva decreased the WCA and increased the SFE for all materials. In general, the presence of saliva decreased the adhesion and biofilm formation of both microorganisms to the acrylic-based material (TR) and tissue conditioners (CC and ST), and increased for the silicone-based soft liners (UH and SS). Surface characteristics and the influence of saliva varied among materials. Roughness seemed to favor C. glabrata and MRSA adhesion and biofilm formation., Clinical Significance: The presence of microorganisms on denture liners can irritate the oral tissues and contribute to systemic diseases. Colonization with more tolerant microorganisms such as C. glabrata and MRSA may expose patients to a greater risk of infection, mainly in immunocompromised hosts, such as aged individuals after treatment of oral cancer. For this, it is important to investigate the surface characteristics of soft liners and tissue conditioners, as well as saliva, and their influence on the adhesion and biofilm formation of C. glabrata and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus., Competing Interests: The authors declared no conflict of interest. The electronic configuration, morphology, optical features, and antibacterial activity of metastable α-AgVO 3 crystals have been discussed by a conciliation and association of the results acquired by experimental procedures and first-principles calculations. The α-AgVO 3 powders were synthesized using a coprecipitation method at 10, 20, and 30 °C. By using a Wulff construction for all relevant low-index surfaces [(100), (010), (001), (110), (011), (101), and (111)], the fine-tuning of the desired morphologies can be achieved by controlling the values of the surface energies, thereby lending a microscopic understanding to the experimental results. The as-synthesized α-AgVO 3 crystals display a high antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The results obtained from the experimental and theoretical techniques allow us to propose a mechanism for understanding the relationship between the morphological changes and antimicrobial performance of α-AgVO 3 .

Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of surface roughness (roughness average [Ra] μm) on the hydrophobicity of a denture-base acrylic resin and the initial adherence and biofilm formation of Candida albicans (C. albicans)., Methods: Disk-shaped specimens were divided into six groups: Ra 0.05, Ra 0.2, Ra 0.4, Ra 0.8, Ra 1.5, and Ra 3.0. Water contact angles (WCA) were measured, and the specimens incubated with C. albicans for 90 min (initial adherence, n = 108) or 48 h (biofilm formation, n = 108). Adhered and biofilm cells were evaluated by c.f.u./mL and 2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide (XTT), and the correlation between the two methods was evaluated. The surface of the specimens and cells (adhered and biofilm) were also analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM)., Results: Groups Ra 0.05 and 3.0 exhibited the lowest (~75°) and the highest (~100°) WCA mean values, respectively. For both initial adherence and biofilm formation, no statistically-significant differences were observed among all groups, as determined by c.f.u./mL and XTT. A positive correlation between these two methods was found. SEM analysis showed the presence of scratches and valleys on the acrylic specimens and densely-packed yeast cells covering the entire surface., Conclusions: Roughness significantly increased hydrophobicity (WCA), but had no effect on the number and metabolic activity of adherent and biofilm cells of C. albicans., (© 2014 Wiley Publishing Asia Pty Ltd.)

This study is a framework proposal for understanding the antimicrobacterial effect of both α-Ag2WO4 microcrystals (AWO) synthesized using a microwave hydrothermal (MH) method and α-Ag2WO4 microcrystals with Ag metallic nanofilaments (AWO:Ag) obtained by irradiation employing an electron beam to combat against planktonic cells of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). These samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) measurements, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results reveal that both AWO and AWO:Ag solutions have bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects, but the irradiated sample is more efficient; i.e., a 4-fold of the MRSA planktonic cells as compared to the nonirradiated sample was observed. In addition, first principles calculations were performed to obtain structural and electronic properties of AWO and metallic Ag, which provides strong quantitative support for an antimicrobacterial mechanism based on the enhancement of electron transfer processes between α-Ag2WO4 and Ag nanoparticles.
